Dissertação para obtenção do Grau de Mestre em Engenharia Electrotécnica e Computadores The objective of this thesis is to study the behaviour of a bandgap voltage reference and develop it in order to be more efficient than the existing ones. In this case having applicability in energy harvest, the main approach for this circuit is to reduce the power dissipation and at the same time guarantee a stable of the reference voltage. This can be achieved through the utilization of MOS transistors which can work with a lower voltage then bipolar transistors. The reference voltage circuit present in this thesis can work with a supply voltage as low as 500 mV. In energy harvest systems besides the need to work with extremely low voltages, the sensitivity of the signals is very high, to temperature variation. So it was also important to work with an extended ranges of temperature. For this work it was also developed a temperature sensor so that it has applicability in various fields. The sensor works by currents generated by the bandgap voltage reference, having similar results to a dual slope integrating analogue-to-digital converter, although its operation and logic are quite different. The proposed solution is to implement a reference voltage generator powered by a voltage source of 500 mV, with a consumption of about 7 W. Having a temperature coefficient slightly below 74 ppm/ C and a temperature sensor with linearity quite satisfactory.

Dissertação apresentada na Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia da Universidade Nova de Lisboa para a obtenção do grau de Mestre em Engenharia Electrotécnica e de Computadores Esta tese apresenta um circuito conversor DC-DC (“step-up”) para aplicações de “energy harvest”. Este circuito utiliza uma arquitectura “Switched capacitor voltage tripler”, controlada por um circuito MPPT baseado nos métodos “Load Voltage Maximization” e “Hill Climbing”. Este circuito foi desenhado usando a tecnologia “0.13 μm CMOS” de forma a funcionar com uma célula fotoeléctrica de “a-silicon”. Este circuito tem uma fonte de alimentação local também controlada pelo mesmo circuito MPPT, que é uma réplica do conversor “SC voltage tripler”, redimensionado a 3% da área deste último. Este circuito utiliza a combinação de transístores PMOS e NMOS de forma a reduzir a área ocupada. Um esquema de reutilização de cargas é utilizado para compensar as grandes resistências parasitas associadas aos transístores MOS. Os resultados das simulações mostram que o circuito pode fornecer uma potência de 9636 μW à carga, utilizando uma potência de 1274 μW na célula fotoeléctrica,correspondendo a uma eficiência na ordem dos 75,66%. As simulações mostram também que o circuito é capaz de se iniciar com apenas 19% do nível de iluminação máximo da célula fotoeléctrica.

Almost all logic systems have a main clock signal in order to provide a common timing reference for all of the components in the system. In certain cases it is necessary to have rising (or falling) edges at precise time instants, different from the ones in the main clock. To create those new timing edges at the appropriate time it is necessary to use delay circuits or delay lines. In the case of the radar system its necessary to generate a clock signal with a variable delay. This delay is relative to the transmit clock signal and is used to determine the target distance. Traditionally, delay lines are realized using a cascade of delay elements and are typically inserted into a delay-locked-loop (DLL) to guaranty that the delay is not affected by process and temperature variations. A DLL works in a similar way to a Phase Locked Loop (PLL). In order to facilitate the operation of the radar system, it is important that the delay value should be digitally programmable. To achieve a digitally programmable delay with a large linearity (independent from matching errors), the architecture of the system is constituted by a digital modulator that controls a 1-bit digital to time converter, whose output will be filtered by the DLL, thus producing the delayed clock signal. The electronic sub-blocks necessary to build this circuit are describe in detail as the proposed architectures. These circuits are implemented using differential clock signals in order to reduce the noise level in the radar system. Design and simulation results of the digitally programmable DLL shows a high output jitter noise for large delays. In order to improve this results a new architecture is proposed. Conventional DLL’s have a predefined charge pump current. The new architecture will make the charge pump current variable. Simulations results will show a improved jitter noise and delay error.

Thesis presented in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the subject of Electrical and Computer Engineering The work presented in this thesis addresses the task of circuit optimization, helping the designer facing the high performance and high efficiency circuits demands of the market and technology evolution. A novel framework is introduced, based on time-domain analysis, genetic algorithm optimization, and distributed processing. The time-domain optimization methodology is based on the step response of the amplifier. The main advantage of this new time-domain methodology is that, when a given settling-error is reached within the desired settling-time, it is automatically guaranteed that the amplifier has enough open-loop gain, AOL, output-swing (OS), slew-rate (SR), closed loop bandwidth and closed loop stability. Thus, this simplification of the circuit‟s evaluation helps the optimization process to converge faster. The method used to calculate the step response expression of the circuit is based on the inverse Laplace transform applied to the transfer function, symbolically, multiplied by 1/s (which represents the unity input step). Furthermore, may be applied to transfer functions of circuits with unlimited number of zeros/poles, without approximation in order to keep accuracy. Thus, complex circuit, with several design/optimization degrees of freedom can also be considered. The expression of the step response, from the proposed methodology, is based on the DC bias operating point of the devices of the circuit. For this, complex and accurate device models (e.g. BSIM3v3) are integrated. During the optimization process, the time-domain evaluation of the amplifier is used by the genetic algorithm, in the classification of the genetic individuals. The time-domain evaluator is integrated into the developed optimization platform, as independent library, coded using C programming language. The genetic algorithms have demonstrated to be a good approach for optimization since they are flexible and independent from the optimization-objective. Different levels of abstraction can be optimized either system level or circuit level. Optimization of any new block is basically carried-out by simply providing additional configuration files, e.g. chromosome format, in text format; and the circuit library where the fitness value of each individual of the genetic algorithm is computed. Distributed processing is also employed to address the increasing processing time demanded by the complex circuit analysis, and the accurate models of the circuit devices. The communication by remote processing nodes is based on Message Passing interface (MPI). It is demonstrated that the distributed processing reduced the optimization run-time by more than one order of magnitude. Platform assessment is carried by several examples of two-stage amplifiers, which have been optimized and successfully used, embedded, in larger systems, such as data converters. A dedicated example of an inverter-based self-biased two-stage amplifier has been designed, laid-out and fabricated as a stand-alone circuit and experimentally evaluated. The measured results are a direct demonstration of the effectiveness of the proposed time-domain optimization methodology. Portuguese Foundation for the Science and Technology (FCT)
