Raymond Seitz is a very popular American ambassador in London although he is not a typical choice. It is common for ambassadors to change when the President changes but Ray Seitz is so friendly and skilled at his job that no-one wants him to go. He was born in 1940 in Hawaii, son of an army major general. He went to Yale and became a teacher before joining the Foreign Service in 1966. He has been posted to London three times.

Douglas Hurd, British Foreign Secretary, would not be allowed to do his job under the terms of the social provisions of the Maastricht treaty that limit a week's work to a maximum of 48 hours. When overseas trips are involved, the Foreign Secretary can work for even longer than the 18 hours of an average non-travelling day. Mr Hurd usually gets up at 7am and returns to bed at 1am, frequently later. A large part of his time is spent talking to visiting foreign officials and attending meetings with his administrative staff to approve the implementation of their recommendations.
