Low-temperature physicist Russell Donnelly and his colleagues at the University of Oregon in Eugene and Yale University in New Haven, CT, hope that a liquid helium 'wind tunnel' will be built at a new National Cryogenics Turbulence Center at Brookhaven National Laboratory. The idea behind the liquid helium wind tunnel is to allow marine and aeronautical engineers to carry out realistic simulations of their designs in the laboratory. It is impossible to drive water or air past a model of a nuclear submarine or jet aircraft fast enough to mimic the real thing.
