The UK Serious Fraud Office (SFO) has been criticized following the acquittal of defendants in a fraud case relating to Maxwell pension funds. Kevin and Ian Maxwell and an adviser to Robert Maxwell, Larry Trachtenberg, were acquitted on charges on dishonest misuse of assets of the fund. There are other charges relating to conspiracy to defraud, faced by the three defendants. The SFO has to decide whether to carry on with prosecutions relating to Maxwell pension funds.

Issues concerning the management of the UK Press Complaints Commission (PCC) are discussed. It is argued that the PCC is inconsistent in its rulings and lacks transparency. The PCC should seek to encourage good practice and making rulings, not broker compromises.

UK Press Complaints Commission (PCC) Chmn Lord Wakeham has resigned, prompted by his involvement in the investigations into the collapse of Enron. His tenure at the PCC was very significant, and he has played a key role in encouraging self-regulation of the press.

It is important to raise questions about the effectiveness of the UK Press Complaints Commission (PCC) under its current management. It is argued that the PCC and its senior managers are too close to leading newspaper editors, the Royal Family and celebrities.

There is still considerable uncertainty in the UK regarding the law of passing-off in relation to magazine publishing. Banks were blamed by Kevin Maxwell for their role in the Maxwell pensions case. Banks loaned the Maxwell empire funds to expand through acquisitions, and were involved in deals leaving funds owning to pension funds and other creditors. The banks argue that they were misled, but this is only part of the explanation. An increase in share prices of media firms at the end of the 1980s was also influential, and the banks' behavior appears rash in retrospect.
