Using the metaphor of beach crossings made famous by ethno-historian Greg DENING (2004), in this article I reflect on my first experience of ethnographic fieldwork. In the article I document how, as a doctoral student investigating 19th century missionary activity, I transitioned from archival to field-based research on the southern Vanuatu island of Tanna in 1975, completed my PhD two years later, and have continued to develop my relations with the Tannese to the present. I argue that this reflects, not only the notable capacity of the Tannese to embrace strangers, but also the extraordinary bond I forged with one "informant", David KAUKARE. I describe how more than any other person it was David, a primary school teacher at an isolated east coast village, who mediated my crossing into a society profoundly different from my own. In the article I explore how together we negotiated the crossings between our interconnecting and shifting worlds���sometimes mindfully, but more often than not serendipitously. For this article, I have drawn from a project "Looking at Our Own History Book: Exploring Through the Stories of Aboriginal Women the Relationship Between Shame and the Problems with Alcohol", which I undertook in partnership with Aboriginal Australian counsellors, community workers, and women with whom they had worked. I conducted my research in urban and regional areas of Victoria, Australia from 2014-2017. In the article, I describe how listening to the women's first-hand accounts of practices associated with settler-colonisation impacted me, as researcher���both emotionally and in terms of my professional and social identity���and how the telling of their stories, particularly in relation to the concept of "shame", impacted how the women saw themselves. Approaching the research process as a shared act of becoming, the article adds to our understanding of how self-conscious emotions such as shame contribute to the problems researchers working in the area investigate, and provides a different approach to how they might best be addressed., Forum Qualitative Sozialforschung / Forum: Qualitative Social Research, Vol. 23 No. 1 (2022)

Despite researcher emotions often being considered off-limits, here I position my own emotions as central to reaching deeper ethnographic understanding. I suggest the importance of researcher emotions for grappling with the messy reality of living in the field, and for reflecting on ethnographic experiences long after fieldwork is completed. I question what responsibilities researchers might have towards respecting our own emotions as ethnographic data. In particular, I consider the emotion of disgust in myself as a researcher. Why do ethnographers avoid engaging with feelings of disgust, and why are aversion and hatred so hard to even name? Is hate something that ethnographers can come to honor? I use the telling of three stories to shed light on researcher-researched relationships in uncomfortable terrains. I write about Vinith, a participant who I hated, but it is about me even more than it is about Vinith���it is about the intersection between us, and my own struggle to present him authentically, as someone who I consider both detestable and all too human. In diesem Artikel befasse ich mich mit der Genese und Gestalt meines ethnografischen Promotionsprojektes zu gesellschaftlichen Teilhabeprozessen gefl��chteter junger M��nner aus Syrien. Meine eigene Beziehungsgestaltung mit den gefl��chteten Feldteilnehmern steht dabei im Mittelpunkt. Verfasst als narrative Reflexion aus der Ich-Perspektive, rekonstruiere ich zum einen die Mechanismen, ��ber die sich der Beziehungsansatz als zentraler Gegenstandsbereich des Feldes eigenlogisch konstituierte. Zum anderen zeichne ich entlang von empirischen Materialausschnitten eine Typisierung der Beziehungsdynamik einer Fallgeschichte nach. Die herausgearbeitete Charakteristik gegenseitiger Funktionalisierung diskutiere ich dabei in Anlehnung an Marcel MAUSS (1990 [1925]) als ein Gabentausch-Verh��ltnis ��� als ein Beispiel von Geben und Nehmen. Unter R��ckgriff auf die Verpflichtung zur Erwiderung einer Gabe, der Vermischung von Person und Sache im Gabentausch sowie dem Schuldverursachungs- und dem Zeitlichkeitsaspekt einer Gabe lege ich insbesondere Zug��nge zu meinem Schamerleben in dieser Beziehung offen. In diesem Beitrag diskutieren wir das Potenzial kollaborativer Forschungspraktiken im Team und stellen unsere methodische Herangehensweise zur Beforschung organisierter Begegnungsräume vor. Am Beispiel sportlicher Aktivitäten, die kostenfrei für alle im öffentlichen Grünraum angeboten wurden, loten wir das interpretative Potenzial einer geteilten Erhebungspraxis aus, um zu erfahren, wie sich sozialräumliche Effekte von temporär geschaffenen Räumen der organisierten Begegnung in den öffentlichen Grünraum einbetten. Dafür haben wir sowohl diejenigen Personen, die an der organisierten Aktivität teilgenommen haben, als auch jene, die nicht daran teilgenommen haben, in den Blick genommen. Indem wir selbst als Forschungsduo diese Rollen zeitgleich im Feld eingenommen haben – nämlich als unmittelbare Teilnehmerin und als distanzierter Beobachter – konnten wir soziale Interaktionen durch unterschiedliche Brillen und Körper sicht- und erfahrbar machen. Um aus unseren zwei-geteilten Erfahrungsperspektiven eine gemeinsame Form der Erkenntnisproduktion zu erlangen, sind wir anschließend einander empirisch-analytisch in einem reflexiven Dialog begegnet. Im analytischen Zusammen(er)fassen haben wir unsere unterschiedlichen Perspektiven gegenübergestellt und zusammengeführt. Dort haben wir unsere Beobachtungen aus den differenten Rollen im Feld systematisch verdichtet und wertvolles Kontextwissen generiert. Mit dieser mehrperspektivischen Herangehensweise haben wir ein umfassenderes Bild über die Aktivität im organisierten Begegnungsraum und das ihn umgebende Setting im öffentlichen Grünraum der Stadt erhalten., In this article we discuss the potential of collaborative research practices and present our approach on studying organized spaces of encounter using the example of sports activities offered free of charge "for all" in public parks. Our aim is to explore the socio-spatial effects of these temporary activities and to understand how they are embedded in the public space. For this purpose, we empirically considered both the people who participated in the organized activity and those who did not. Using a team-based method, we approached the field from two different roles (and spatial positions) and took on these roles (and positions) ourselves simultaneously—as active participants and as distanced participant observers. This enabled us to observe and to experience social interactions through different lenses and bodies. In order to converge our bi-folded perspectives and to attain a form of jointly produced knowledge, we "encountered" each other empirically-analytically in a subsequent dialogue. There, we consolidated our observations, thus generating a broader contextual meaning. With this multi-perspective approach, we obtained a more comprehensive picture of the organized space of encounter and the surrounding setting in the public space.

Der Vergleich, obwohl eines der grundlegendsten Verfahren der Sozialwissenschaften, ist alles andere als eine unumstrittene Methode. Tatsächlich existiert nach wie vor ein enorm heterogenes Feld vergleichender Ansätze, die jeweils auf unterschiedliche intellektuelle Traditionen, verschiedenartige Verständnisse des "Vergleichens", spezifische Probleme und Forschungsstrategien bezogen sind. Verschiedene, auf ihre jeweilige Weise hochentwickelte komparative Forschungsrichtungen stehen so weitgehend unverbunden nebeneinander, wodurch letztlich analytische Potenziale verschenkt werden: ländervergleichende (häufig mit quantitativen Verfahren und erklärenden Zielsetzungen verknüpfte) Studien einerseits und kulturvergleichende (typischerweise mit qualitativen Verfahren und verstehend-hermeneutischen Anliegen verbundene) Ansätze andererseits. Die modernen Sozialwissenschaften sehen sich indes mit einer zunehmend komplexen globalen Wirklichkeit konfrontiert, die sich weniger als je zuvor adäquat auf der Grundlage einseitiger Referenzsysteme erfassen lässt. Vor diesem Hintergrund entwickeln wir in diesem Beitrag die Sozialraum- und Feldtheorie Pierre BOURDIEUs durch eine konsequent relationale Lesart in eine Richtung weiter, die es erlaubt, unterschiedliche Konzeptionen und Techniken des sozialwissenschaftlichen Vergleichs im Rahmen eines einheitlichen Bezugsrahmens zur Geltung zu bringen. Der Rückgriff auf diesen allgemeinen Bezugsrahmen eröffnet die Möglichkeit, nationale, internationale sowie transnationale Vergleiche anzustellen, ohne dabei die jeweiligen Referenzsysteme und die damit korrespondierenden Vergleichsentitäten essenzialisieren oder hypostasieren zu müssen., Comparison, as a fundamental operation in the social sciences, is anything but a clearly defined method. Rather, there is a highly heterogeneous field of comparative approaches with different intellectual traditions, ideas of "comparison," specific problems, and research strategies. In fact, different streams of comparative studies exist in parallel, each highly elaborated in its own way but largely ignoring the achievements of the other tradition and thus ultimately wasting analytical potential—namely cross-national studies (often associated with quantitative methods and explanatory objectives) on the one hand and cross-cultural studies or cultural comparisons (usually associated with qualitative methods and hermeneutical approaches) on the other. However, contemporary social sciences are confronted with an increasingly complex global reality that can no longer be described on the basis of one-dimensional frames of reference. Drawing on the basic methodological principle of relationality, the aim of our article is to develop Pierre BOURDIEU's theory of fields and social spaces in a direction that allows different approaches to comparison to be made fruitful on the basis of a common frame of reference. Based on this generalized framework, national, international, and transnational comparisons become possible without having to essentialize or hypostasize specific reference frames and corresponding units of analysis.

In increasingly globalised and linguistically diverse societies, cross-language constellations in qualitative research are becoming more probable and necessary. Based on experiences we gained during our research in foreign language settings, we reflect on three guiding principles of qualitative research—openness, reflexivity and pragmatism—and how they are applied when dealing with the manifold challenges of linguistic understanding. Taking up ongoing discussions about this issue, we provide an account of a reflexive methodology aware of its preconditions and limitations. In this article, I translate the analysis of the production of space as a social process into a processual methodology sensitive to its political aspects. This requires taking actors as well as the different socio-spatial logics into account. One of the main transformations since the 1970s—the historical period under scrutiny in the analysis of the refiguration of spaces—is that of re-scaling. This means that the relationship between socially meaningful geographic arenas (global/worldwide, national, regional, metropolitan, urban, local, bodily), and thus the (hierarchical) order of spatial scales as a whole, has been changing. In order to investigate the diachronic process of refiguration, I have therefore developed a multi-actor and multi-scalar approach. My methodological contribution starts from the inquiry into the socio-theoretical dimension of scale. I do so by asking what sociological analysis can learn from the (mostly geographical) scale debate, and, conversely, what a sociological contribution to this debate might look like. The empirical context from which this intervention stems is research on non-profit and non-governmental organizations in housing and asylum politics. In this article, I discuss how social scientists can interpret intercultural data in a scientific manner. I argue that, when applying methods of social research, the interpretation of intercultural data does not differ fundamentally, but only slightly from the interpretation of intracultural data. However, it is important to include co-interpreters who are familiar with the culture under investigation into the process of interpreting intercultural data. In addition, I explain that hermeneutics has also come under pressure when faced with the interpretation of intracultural data: In hermeneutics, the premise of the unity of culture of the investigated and the investigators presupposes that cultures are delimitable and that they essentially are not further subdivided. If such a unity of culture ever existed, this unity has undoubtedly been eroded by international developments in recent decades and the concomitant need for contact. Based on these reflections, I conclude by presenting and discussing possibilities for as well as limits on inter- and intracultural interpretation., In diesem Artikel diskutiere ich, wie Sozialwissenschaftler*innen interkulturelle Daten auf wissenschaftliche Weise interpretieren können. Ich argumentiere, dass sich die Interpretation interkultureller Daten bei der Anwendung von Methoden der Sozialforschung nicht grundlegend, sondern nur geringfügig von der Interpretation intrakultureller Daten unterscheidet. Allerdings ist es wichtig, Ko-Interpret*innen, die mit der untersuchten Kultur vertraut sind, in den Prozess der Interpretation interkultureller Daten einzubeziehen. Darüber hinaus erkläre ich, dass auch die Hermeneutik bei der Interpretation intrakultureller Daten unter Druck geraten ist: Die Prämisse der Einheit der Kultur der Untersuchten und der Untersuchenden setzt in der Hermeneutik voraus, dass Kulturen abgrenzbar sind und dass sie im Grunde nicht weiter unterteilt werden können. Wenn es eine solche Einheit der Kultur jemals gegeben hat, so ist diese Einheit zweifellos durch die internationalen Entwicklungen der letzten Jahrzehnte und den damit einhergehenden Kontaktzwang erodiert. Ausgehend von diesen Überlegungen werden abschließend Möglichkeiten, aber auch Grenzen inter- und intrakultureller Interpretation dargestellt und diskutiert.

Writing about our bodies, as researchers, does not always do justice to their ebbs and flows—their entanglements with the processes and "products" of our research journeys. In this piece, I share my reflexive engagement with artistic praxis over the course of my early career. Engaging with embodied reflexive praxis through dance, film, and writing enabled me to not only produce but also to feel research and to work through messy and painful experiences. In addition, the essential elements of this central qualitative research strategy in relation to other qualitative approaches are elucidated. From the conversation, the diversity of GTM as well as challenges arising from any data-driven qualitative theory development—including critical psychology—are becoming clear.

In this article, I develop a methodological reflection based on research concerning the role of the history of mathematics in the context of pre-service teacher training. The purpose of the study was to describe the experience of six prospective secondary school mathematics teachers engaged in the reading of historical texts in a history of mathematics course. In the process of research, epistemological tensions emerged between, on the one hand, the need to account for a portion of the participants' intimate personal experience by deploying a phenomenological approach, and on the other hand, the convocation of a historical-cultural perspective of mathematics education focusing on social interaction and artifacts. The answers formulated in response to these epistemological tensions were methodological. Mit autoethnografischen Texten kann die "gesellschaftliche Konstruktion der Wirklichkeit" (BERGER & LUCKMANN 2007 [1969]) anhand biografischer Erfahrungen (ELLIS, ADAMS & BOCHNER 2010) beschrieben werden. Ich nutze diese Art der Reflexion, um die Auswirkungen der Corona-Pandemie auf die Herstellung alltäglicher Gewissheiten zu untersuchen. Dazu beschäftige ich mich im ersten Teil des Artikels mit einer Urlaubsreise, die ich Mitte März 2020 nach Ägypten unternahm, wobei meine Selbstverständlichkeitsunterstellungen maßgeblich erschüttert wurden. Durch drohende Quarantänemaßnahmen und Grenzschließungen wurde der Urlaub in ein Abenteuer verwandelt. An diese Beschreibungen schließt eine theoretische Einordnung der Erfahrungen in Auseinandersetzung mit SCHÜTZ und LUCKMANN (1979 [1975], 1984) an. In this article, I explore the banalities of qualitative work flirting with some of the premises of non-representation theories' (NRT) thinking style. More specifically, I interrogate the usefulness of thinking with the mundane to explore the kinds of opportunities that could be afforded to language and transcultural communication if we repositioned qualitative work as a more-than-human affair. Drawing from experiences while conducting fieldwork onboard transatlantic flights, I discuss the implications of accounting for banalities and their embodiment within a flat ontology perspective. There is a scarcity of literature written about body mapping as a method to understanding mindfulness practice, and even fewer examples of how to undertake this type of research in a tangible way. In this article, we discuss how body mapping was used as part of a qualitative study investigating working mothers' mindful practices. We present a novel approach to integrating mindfulness-based techniques with SOLOMON's body mapping method. We illustrate our experiences by 1. sharing an overview of body mapping as a method, and 2. reviewing practical issues we encountered including: a) ethical issues, b) how to approach analysis, and c) body mapping within social research. Body mapping can be a fun and expressive experience for participants of social research. It can also be a confusing and overwhelming experience for researchers and participants new to the method. In this article, we suggest (im)mobility biography as a method for reconstructing human (im)mobilities and related negotiations of meanings of place, time and social interaction. Based on biographical-narrative approaches and participatory ideals the combination of life history interviewing with a participatory timeline tool is the best fit for capturing individuals' life-worlds over time. After presenting theoretical presuppositions on relational meanings of place, time and social interaction, we provide an overview of biographical and participatory research in the context of human (im)mobilities and sketch methodological origins of the life history interview and the timeline tool. Furthermore, we address issues essential for planning and preparing (im)mobility biography, and demonstrate two different applications of the method in migration contexts in Germany and Ecuador. Subsequently, we present options for analysis and interpretation of textual and graphical data outputs. Keeping in mind strengths and challenges, we consider (im)mobility biography a valuable method for capturing (im)mobile life-worlds as well as contextual embeddedness of individual decision-making on moving or staying. Especially in terms of its participatory orientation, the visualization of migration trajectories facilitates structuration and memorization of life histories, allows for shared analysis even at the interview stage, and encourages participants to reflect on their biographies., In diesem Artikel stellen wir (Im)mobilitäts-Biografie als Forschungsmethode zur Rekonstruktion von (Im)mobilitäten und damit verbundenen Aushandlungen von Bedeutungen von Ort, Zeit und sozialen Interaktionen vor. Basierend auf biografisch-narrativen Ansätzen und partizipativen Konzepten ist die Kombination aus Life History Interview und partizipativem Timeline Tool bestens geeignet, um individuelle Lebenswelten im zeitlichen Verlauf zu erfassen. Nach der Darstellung theoretischer Vorannahmen zu relationalen Bedeutungen von Ort, Zeit und sozialen Interaktionen geben wir einen Überblick über biografische und partizipative Forschung im Kontext von (Im)mobilitäten und zeichnen methodische Ursprünge des Life History Interviews und Timeline Tools nach. Des Weiteren beschäftigen wir uns mit Aspekten, die bei der Planung und Vorbereitung der (Im)mobilitäts-Biografie beachtet werden müssen und zeigen zwei verschiedene Anwendungsmöglichkeiten in Migrationskontexten in Deutschland und Ecuador auf. Im Anschluss stellen wir Optionen der Auswertung und Interpretation von textlichen und grafischen Daten vor. Nach einer Abwägung von Stärken und Herausforderungen halten wir die (Im)mobilitäts-Biografie für eine nützliche Methode, um (im)mobile Lebenswelten sowie die kontextuelle Einbettung individueller Entscheidungsfindungen bezüglich des Gehens oder Bleibens zu erfassen. Hinsichtlich der partizipativen Ausrichtung unterstützt vor allem die Visualisierung von (Im)mobilitätsverläufen die Strukturierung von und Erinnerung an Lebensgeschichten, sie ermöglicht eine gemeinsame Analyse bereits während des Interviews und regt die Teilnehmenden an, über ihre Biografien zu reflektieren.

Photography can be used for a wide variety of social functions. The hermeneutic method of image cluster analysis presented deals with a comparatively new social use and understanding of photography: as digital montage forming intricate compilations. At the methodological heart of this approach is the 1. figurative analysis of the compositional principles of particular image compilations, i.e., their expressive meaning. This ideographic perspective is expanded and supplemented by 2. investigating the structure of the mediated field of perception and action of each image cluster, as well as the styles of observing and knowing that they predicate. Methodologically speaking, the approach relies on an assumption that far from being an invention of technological media, the "game" (WITTGENSTEIN) which is constitutive of iconic image clusters, complete with relationships of similarity and difference, has its anthropological basis and primary social expression in people's body language and in minor social distinctions. According to this hypothesis, in recent image clusters photography is no longer necessarily understood as depicting or documenting occurrences in the lifeworld, but is instead consolidated as a collectively shared means of expression which can be repeatedly recombined to form new figures of expression—in other words, it achieves a decidedly idiomatic quality., Forum Qualitative Sozialforschung / Forum: Qualitative Social Research, Vol 21, No 2 (2020): Challenging Times— Qualitative Methods and Methodological Approaches to Research on Time

When discussing mixed methods research from a methodological point of view, it must be acknowledged that they have been developed from rather simple research designs to complex and multilayered frameworks in which qualitative content analysis (QCA) is seemingly a key method for analyzing non-numeric data. This can be attributed to the versatile procedures and functions for which QCA can be used. Against this background, we describe and analyze the roles of QCA within different advanced mixed methods designs. First, we outline the implementation of QCA within a typical methodological framework, which consists of three hierarchical layers. Second, mixed methods research designs and the role of QCA in several design types are characterized. Third, three design types stemming from studies from educational sciences and sports science are presented. With these three elements, we demonstrate that QCA can be used in different roles ranging from dominance to subordination, thus implementing different rationales. In diesem Artikel beschreibe ich, wie qualitative Inhaltsanalyse für ein historisches Forschungsprojekt mit einer großen Textmenge nutzbar gemacht werden kann. Ich beziehe mich hierbei exemplarisch auf das methodische Vorgehen in meiner Dissertation, in der ich das Verhältnis von frühen Theorieansätzen Sozialer Arbeit zu sozialen Bewegungen beschreibe. Ausgehend von einem systemtheoretischen Beobachtungsstandpunkt betrachte ich diese Theorieansätze als Kommunikationssysteme, die sich mittels ihrer systemeigenen Semantik charakterisieren und vergleichen lassen. Die Systemsemantik rekonstruiere ich anhand der Verwendung der Begriffe "Volk" und "Nation" in Zeitschriften der historischen Arbeiter_innen-, Frauen- und Jugendbewegung sowie in Texten von Herman NOHL, Alice SALOMON sowie Carl MENNICKE, die als klassische Theoretiker_innen der Sozialen Arbeit gelten. Hierzu kombiniere ich die qualitative Inhaltsanalyse mit quantitativen Verfahren sowie mit Methoden zur Rekonstruktion von Begriffssemantiken. In diesem Artikel beschreibe ich Vorgehensweise, Umsetzung und Herausforderungen der Forschungspraxis., In this article I discuss how qualitative content analysis can be used in historical research projects with a large amount of text. As an exemplary application I describe the methodical approach I use in my PhD research, which is about the relationships between early theories of social work and social movements. From a system theoretical point of view, I consider social movements and theories of social work as systems of communications, which can be described and compared according to their specific semantics. I reconstruct these semantics by analyzing how the words "Nation" and "Volk" are used in magazines of the labor movement, the youth movement and women's liberation on the one hand and the theories of Alice SALOMON, Herman NOHL and Carl MENNICKE on the other hand. Therefore I combine techniques of qualitative content analysis with quantitative approaches as well as methods of reconstructing concepts of meanings. In this article, I describe the methodology of my thesis, its implementation, and challenges in research practice.

Dass die kulturwissenschaftliche Inhaltsanalyse eine eigenständige Forschungsmethode im Feld qualitativ-inhaltsanalytischer Auswertungsverfahren darstellt, zeigt sich erst an ihrer kultur- und objekttheoretischen und methodologischen Konturierung. Erst durch die Reflexion des theoretisch-methodologischen Bezugsrahmens, in den jegliche wissenschaftliche Methode mehr oder weniger explizit eingebettet ist, wird die Eigenständigkeit des jeweiligen Verfahrens sichtbar. Aus objekttheoretischer Perspektive stellt sich die Frage nach dem Gegenstand der Inhaltsanalyse: Was wird bei der Erforschung von Kommunikation überhaupt untersucht? Neben der Beantwortung dieser Frage ist mit dieser Reflexion auch die Anforderung verbunden, sich der kulturtheoretischen Annahmen zu versichern, mittels derer grundsätzlich festlegt wird, was überhaupt Gegenstand der Forschung sein soll und wie demzufolge empirische Daten zu generieren sind. Im engen Zusammenhang hiermit stehen methodologische Klärungen: Wie ist die kulturwissenschaftliche Inhaltsanalyse prinzipiell auszugestalten, um multiple Konnotationen als Gegenstand der Analyse erforschbar zu machen? Die dokumentarische Methode, die als Milieuforschungsmethode am Gegenstand der Freundschafts- und Freizeitgruppe entwickelt wurde, hat sich inzwischen in verschiedensten Gegenstandsfeldern in der Erziehungswissenschaft etabliert. In diesem Beitrag werden kritische Anfragen an die vollumfängliche Passung zwischen dokumentarischer Methode und dem Gegenstand Unterricht gestellt. Dies wird am Beispiel des systematischen Auseinanderfallens von SchülerInnen- und LehrerInnenhabitus und damit dem Fehlen eines gemeinsam geteilten Orientierungsrahmens im Unterricht thematisiert. Meine an diesem Spezialproblem und der gefundenen Lösung entwickelte These ist, dass Unterricht mit der Methode durch das Primat und damit die Suche nach dem Konjunktiven, die trotz des Fehlens eines gemeinsamen Orientierungsrahmens aufrechterhalten wird, tendenziell harmonisierend beobachtet wird. Als Folge können Komplexitätsdimensionen aus dem Blick geraten. In meinem Beitrag zeichne ich die empirischen und theoretischen Folgen dieses Primats der Konjunktion nach und begründe die These, dass zu einer umfänglicheren Erfassung der Komplexität von Unterricht eine Verschiebung im Primat und eine Erweiterung um andere Prinzipien der Sozialität notwendig sind. Grundlagen und Techniken qualitativer Inhaltsanalyse sind vor über 35 Jahren vorgeschlagen worden und erfreuen sich im Rahmen qualitativ orientierter sozialwissenschaftlicher Textanalyseansätze anhaltender Beliebtheit. So soll hier ein Resümee gezogen, auf die Rezeption eingegangen und ein Ausblick gegeben werden. Im Beitrag werden drei Bereiche behandelt: Zum einen sollen die Grundlagen des Vorgehens skizziert werden, die Abgrenzungen zu anderen textanalytischen Ansätzen erlauben. Hier gilt es auch, die Unterschiede zur quantitativen Inhaltsanalyse herauszustreichen. Die Kategorisierungen erfolgen dort automatisch nach einem bestimmten Algorithmus, während bei der qualitativen Inhaltsanalyse die Zuordnung von Kategorien zu Textbestandteilen immer interpretativ bleibt. Im Gegensatz zu anderen interpretativen Textanalyseansätzen geschieht dies allerdings streng regelgeleitet. Dann wird auf die Rezeption der qualitativen Inhaltsanalyse eingegangen und es wird versucht, dabei aufgetretene Missverständnisse zu klären. Schließlich werden Vergleiche zu neueren Ansätzen qualitativer Inhaltsanalyse, wie sie von Margrit SCHREIER und Udo KUCKARTZ vorgeschlagen wurden, angestellt. An einem Beispiel wird das Vorgehen nochmals erläutert. Eine qualitative Metaanalyse ist eine systematische Zusammenfassung von empirischen Studien mithilfe des Instruments der qualitativen Inhaltsanalyse. Der Einsatz dieses Instruments macht die qualitative Metaanalyse überlegen gegenüber narrativen Überblicksartikeln oder dem Modell der Metasynthese – und zwar insbesondere durch die Integration von qualitativen und quantitativen Untersuchungen. Diese Überlegenheit wird erreicht, indem ausgehend vom Grundprinzip der inhaltlich-strukturierenden Inhaltsanalyse bestimmte Teilschritte methodologisch so spezifiziert werden, dass eine konstruktive Verbindung von Ablaufschritten der klassischen quantitativen mit der qualitativen Inhaltsanalyse erzielt wird. Dazu gehört zunächst auf der Grundlage, dass es sich bei wissenschaftlichen Publikationen um Formen expliziten, kommunizierbaren Wissens handelt, dass Kodiereinheiten unabhängig von der Kategorienentwicklung mit Schwerpunkt auf der Sinndimension festgelegt werden, mittels derer quantitativ-statistische Ergebnisse genauso wie qualitativ-narrative Resultate berücksichtigt werden können. Desgleichen ist bei der Kategoriengenerierung eine Kombination von deduktiver und induktiver Kategoriendefinition anzusetzen, die sowohl die Beantwortung gerichteter Problemfragen wie die heuristische Ausdifferenzierung von Erkundungsfragen erlaubt. Durch ein solches Vorgehen können mittels der qualitativen Metaanalyse dann am Schluss Ergebnisstrukturen erreicht werden, die durchaus auch (nonparametrisch) statistisch auswertbar sind. Wir entwickeln und demonstrieren diese methodologische Spezifizierung der qualitativen Inhaltsanalyse im Rahmen von Metaanalysen am Beispiel der Evaluationsforschung im Bereich des Nachhaltigkeitsmanagements (Lokale-Agenda-21-Prozesse)., We explore the concept of qualitative meta-analysis as an unconventional tool of analyzing and summarizing empirical findings of previous studies. In contrast to statistical meta-analyses and the use of meta-syntheses or systematic reviews, using qualitative content analysis for meta-analytic purposes provides an adaptable method of generating meta-knowledge about relevant relationships between the concepts and variables under research. A main advantage of qualitative content analysis as an instrument for qualitative meta-analysis is that it enables researchers to include and analyze quantitative as well as qualitative research articles. This aim can be achieved by integrating the typical sequences of quantitative and qualitative content analysis. As scientific publications are expressions of explicit and communicable knowledge, qualitative meta-analysis implies that coding units are specified on the dimension of meanings prior to the generation of the coding frame. Furthermore, the method allows for combining deductive and inductive strategies in generating the coding frame, depending on the underlying research question. We explore and demonstrate how qualitative content analysis can be adapted towards conducting a qualitative meta-analysis by exploring exogenous and endogenous factors influencing the implementation and realization of local sustainability projects. Based on this analysis we show that the meta-analyzed studies do indeed allow for statistical analysis. On the methodological level, we provide a practical example of how to conduct a qualitative content analysis for the purpose of a qualitative meta-analysis.

Auch wenn die Projekterfahrung zu partizipativen Forschungsansätzen im deutschsprachigen Raum zunimmt, sind partizipative Auswertungsverfahren noch selten erprobt. Bezugnehmend auf das im Forschungsverbund "PartKommPLus – Forschungsverbund für gesunde Kommunen" angesiedelte Teilprojekt "ElfE – Eltern fragen Eltern" zeigen wir ein Anwendungsbeispiel für die partizipative Datenauswertung, in der wir unter anderem das Kodierverfahren der Grounded-Theory-Methodologie (GTM) einsetzten. Die GTM ist an partizipative Ansätze gut anschlussfähig: Auch Mitforschende ohne sozialwissenschaftliche Grundausbildung können durch die starke Materialorientierung der GTM und die Prozesshaftigkeit des Kodierens in einem moderierten Arbeitsverfahren mitwirken. Andere Bestandteile der GTM stellen eine Herausforderung für die partizipative Gesundheitsforschung dar. Thematisch ging es in ElfE um die Verbesserung der Chancengleichheit von Familien mit Kindern im Kita-Alter. In zwei Kommunen wurden Eltern mit Kindern im Kita-Alter als Peer- bzw. Mitforschende gewonnen. In Forschungswerkstätten wurde der gesamte Forschungsprozess partizipativ entwickelt und durchgeführt. Als Ergebnis sind Kernbotschaften für die kommunale Praxis, für Fachkräfte und für die Elternschaft entstanden. In diesem Beitrag zeigen wir am empirischen Beispiel die partizipative Auswertung qualitativer Daten. Die GTM als etabliertes Verfahren der qualitativen Sozialforschung kann die methodische Weiterentwicklung partizipativer Forschung unterstützen. Voraussetzung ist eine sparsame Datenerhebung, die Steuerung des Auswertungsprozesses sowie ein arbeitsteiliges Vorgehen zwischen akademisch Forschenden und Mitforschenden., Even as experience in participatory research is increasing in German-speaking countries, participatory data analysis is still relatively new. In the context of the project ElfE—Parents Asking Parents, part of the PartKommPlus—Research Consortium for Healthy Communities, we describe the application of a participatory data analysis in which we use grounded theory methodology (GTM). GTM is compatible with participatory approaches to research: Even peer researchers without formal training in the social sciences can actively participate, due to the focus on concrete data and the process-oriented coding procedure. Other components of GTM present a challenge for participatory research. The focus of ElfE was addressing issues of health equity for families with preschool children. In two communities, parents were recruited as peer researchers. The entire research process was developed and implemented in a participatory manner in research workshops. The research resulted in developing core messages for community members, practitioners, and parents. In this article, we describe a participatory analysis of qualitative data. We demonstrate that GTM can support the further development of participatory research. The use of GTM in participatory analysis requires limiting the data collection, proactively monitoring the analysis process, and defining the tasks conducted by academic researchers and peer researchers.

The history of content analysis is largely the history of quantitative content analysis. Although qualitative content analysis (QCA) was used in scholarly writings, it remained largely limited to an explorative, impressionistic, and less pragmatic role. Researchers who laid the foundations for the method of content analysis and coined it as a significant quantitative research method were influenced by the logical positivism popular in the 1940s and the dominance of quantitative forms of analysis, especially in Anglo-Saxon regions. These and other trends overshadowed the methodological developments in QCA, although critical voices raised objections to the over-reliance on quantification and analysis of manifest content at the expense of the deeper meanings in the text. Against this background, I make an attempt to look back briefly at the history and significance of QCA, and then critically examine the main reasons for the marginalization of QCA in the broader Anglo-Saxon vs. Continental context in comparison to its quantitative counterpart. While the stronger presence of qualitative research, including QCA, is explained by the dominance of hermeneutic intellectual traditions in Germany and other non-English speaking countries, their general marginalization is related to the methodological uncertainty, positivist quantitative orthodoxy in evaluating qualitative methods, and epistemological and ontological ambiguity connected to the approach. Qualitative design consists of various approaches towards data collection, which researchers can use to help with the provision of both cultural and contextual description and interpretation of social phenomena. Qualitative content analysis (QCA) and thematic analysis (TA) as qualitative research approaches are commonly used by researchers across disciplines. There is a gap in the international literature regarding differences between QCA and TA in terms of the concept of a theme and how it is developed. Therefore, in this discussion paper we address this gap in knowledge and present differences and similarities between these qualitative research approaches in terms of the theme as the final product of data analysis. We drew on current multidisciplinary literature to support our perspectives and to develop internationally informed analytical notions of the theme in QCA and TA. We anticipate that improving knowledge and understanding of theme development in QCA and TA will support other researchers in selecting the most appropriate qualitative approach to answer their study question, provide high-quality and trustworthy findings, and remain faithful to the analytical requirements of QCA and TA., Qualitatives Design besteht aus verschiedenen Ansätzen zur Datenerhebung und -analyse, die insbesondere für die Erstellung kultureller und kontextueller Beschreibungen und die Interpretation sozialer Phänomene anwendbar sind. Qualitative Inhaltsanalyse (QCA) und thematische Analyse (TA) stellen beides qualitative Ansätze dar, die üblicherweise von Forscher_innen aus unterschiedlichen Disziplinen gleichermaßen eingesetzt werden. Allerdings besteht in der internationalen Literatur eine Leerstelle in Bezug auf den Begriff von "Thema" in beiden Ansätzen und des Prozesses der Entwicklung von Themen. Daher gehen wir in unserem Beitrag auf diese Leerstelle ein und stellen Unterschiede und Ähnlichkeiten zwischen beiden Methoden in Bezug auf das "Thema" als Endprodukt der Datenanalyse dar. Zur Unterstützung unserer Sichtweisen und zur Erstellung international fundierter analytischer Begriffe von "Thema" greifen wir auf die aktuelle Literatur aus unterschiedlichen Disziplinen zurück. Wir gehen davon aus, dass Forscher_innen von einem vertieften Verständnis des Prozesses der Themenentwicklung in mehreren Hinsichten profitieren, nämlich bei der Auswahl einer geeigneten Methode für die Beantwortung ihrer Forschungsfrage, bei der Erzielung qualitativ hochwertiger und valider Ergebnisse sowie dabei, den analytischen Anforderungen an QCA und TA gerecht zu werden.

Online-Teilnehmer*innenvideos (OTV) werden im vorliegenden Beitrag als audiovisuelle Teilnehmer*innen-Accounts sozialer Situationen und Geschehnisse und zugleich als Bestandteile von sozialen Medien, Online-Videokultur und ihren technischen, medialen und sozialen Logiken gekennzeichnet. Dabei wollen wir zeigen, dass mit OTV ein vielschichtiger und sinnreicher Datentyp bereitsteht, der – genreabhängig – häufig ein Soziologisieren der Teilnehmer*innen dokumentiert und in der interpretativen Videoanalyse mit Gewinn genutzt werden kann. Gestützt auf die Erfahrungen aus Lehrforschungsprojekten, in denen mit diesem Datentyp v.a. im Kontext der Soziologie politischer Protestereignisse gearbeitet wurde, werden verschiedene Verfahrensschritte der Analyse von OTV vorgestellt. Die Forschungspolitik erwartet zunehmend, dass auch qualitative sozialwissenschaftliche Daten archiviert und für die Nachnutzung zur Verfügung gestellt werden. Es mangelt jedoch an empirischen Analysen zu den forschungspraktischen Möglichkeiten und Folgen einer Archivierung. Mit unserem Beitrag adressieren wir diese Lücke. Wir stellen einen gescheiterten Archivierungsversuch von leitfadengestützten Interviews in einem wissenschaftssoziologischen Projekt vor, der durch die Forderung des Forschungsförderers nach der Bereitstellung der Daten für eine Nachnutzung veranlasst wurde. Wir rekonstruieren alle Entscheidungsprozesse, die zur Vorbereitung der Datenarchivierung getroffen wurden. Wir mussten entscheiden, ob und in welcher Form Daten archiviert werden sollen, wie das Prinzip der informierten Einwilligung realisiert wird, wie wir die Einwilligung der Interviewten einholen, wie wir die Interviews anonymisieren und wie Kontextinformationen bereitgestellt werden. Unsere Analyse zeigt, dass die Erfordernisse des Datenschutzes und der Forschungsethik zu unüberwindbaren forschungspraktischen Problemen führen können, die einer Archivierung von qualitativen Daten entgegenstehen. Vignettes are increasingly used within qualitative studies to research difficult topics, requiring ethical mindfulness and sensitivity from researchers. In this article, I examine the methodological issues of incorporating vignettes within qualitative research, specifically my research exploring South Asian maternal experiences of supporting their children with special education needs and disability (SEND). I present participants with seven vignettes concerning the roles of religion, culture, gender and immigrant history. By presenting the participants' responses, I explore the applicability of two ensuing methodological concerns: 1. Are authentic representations useful and straightforward measure of vignette's effectiveness? 2. Do reduced socially desired responses reflect the effectiveness of a vignette? I consider these questions in detail, as well as how addressing the first issue affected my commitment to the second issue. In this article, we analyze non-mainstream social work in Denmark. We focus on how what we call a performative approach in both social work and research can expand the understanding of deconstruction. We argue that critical performance exceeds the negative moment of deconstruction, where we only know that we are non-clients, non-psychologists, non-directive. In performance, the potential Other with its complexity is formulated positively. This, we argue, provides a basis for what we call transformative users—users that participate in the production of the standards from which they let their lives be directed. We show that transformation is not only a matter of giving space for the subject, but equally a matter of giving space and attention to the collectives from where standards arise. In the final part of the article we turn the gaze toward ourselves, examining our collaboration in the research and the writing of this text, as a performative process., In diesem Beitrag befassen wir uns mit sozialer Arbeit jenseits des dänischen Mainstreams. Leitend ist, in welcher Weise ein von uns so benannter performativer Ansatz sowohl im Falle praktischer Sozialarbeit als auch im Falle von Forschung zum Verstehen von Dekonstruktion beitragen kann. Kritische Performativität bedeutet für uns, dass wir über die negativen Momente von Dekonstruktion hinausgehen, in denen lediglich festgemacht wird, wer Nicht-Klient/innen, Nicht-Psycholog/innen, Nicht-Weisungsberechtigte sind, und stattdessen potenzielle andere in ihrer Komplexität entlang positiver Zuschreibungen definieren. Wir bezeichnen diese anderen als transformative Nutzer/innen, d.h. Nutzer/innen, die an der Produktion derjenigen Standards teilhaben, entlang derer sie ihr Leben führen. Dies setzt voraus, dass wir uns nicht nur mit den jeweiligen Subjekten befassen, sondern auch mit den Kollektiven, aus denen heraus Standards gebildet werden. Und wir wenden uns schließlich uns selbst zu, unserer Zusammenarbeit in der Forschung und beim Schreiben dieses Textes in einem performativen Prozess.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples of Australia are among the most researched in the world. Indigenous research methodologies reframe a historical colonial-centric and often exploitative research paradigm, to instead privilege the voices and perspectives of Indigenous peoples within a social justice framework. In this article, we describe the lessons learnt in a research partnership between an Aboriginal and two Anglo-Australian researchers conducting an arts-based action research project in collaboration with five Aboriginal communities in New South Wales, Australia. We identify the importance of reflexivity to shed light on the impact of insider and outsider status in order to design and conduct culturally and ethically informed research with Aboriginal communities. In diesem Beitrag stelle ich eine Forschungsperspektive vor, mit der die Analyse von familien- und lebensgeschichtlichen Verläufen und die Analyse von Orten verknüpft werden kann. In this article, we engage with some of the ethical challenges we faced during a four-year postcritical ethnography that focused on the resettlement experiences of Burundians with refugee status living in southern Appalachia in the United States.We discuss how we navigated decisions about what and how to share all that we learned, particularly as we sought to protect and honor what participants shared and experienced. Broadly, we frame our decision-making process in relation to the notions of ethics in practice and relational ethics. Notably, we complicate commitments to transparency, trustworthiness, and advocacy, as we examine issues of responsibility and representation. In diesem Beitrag soll am Beispiel eines Geschlechterforschungsprojekts, in dem der Wandel von Geschlechterordnungen (LENZ & ADLER 2010) an einer Universität untersucht wurde, aufgezeigt werden, wie der Feldzugang nicht nur eine forschungspraktische Herausforderung darstellt, sondern bereits als eine wichtige Erkenntnisquelle dienen kann. Auf der Basis von Beobachtungsprotokollen werden zwei Fakultäten kontrastiert und es wird dabei herausgearbeitet, wie unterschiedlich sich Struktureinheiten innerhalb einer Hochschule organisational arrangieren und wie das Thema Geschlecht darin jeweils thematisiert wird. Gemeinsam ist wiederum beiden Fakultäten, dass die Frage nach der Vergeschlechtlichung einer Fachkultur auf die Frage nach numerischen Anteilen reduziert, externalisiert und damit nicht als relevante organisationale Gestaltungsaufgabe aufgegriffen wird. In this article, I analyze the ways researchers manage the issue of confidentiality in studies with vulnerable research participants in the Polish context, which is characterized by a relatively low degree of ethics and data protection legislation in the social sciences. I am primarily interested in what approach researchers take on confidentiality and how this informs their research practice. I also consider how they attempt to protect confidentiality in their research. The analysis is based on in-depth interviews and e-mail correspondence with 42 Polish qualitative researchers who deal with vulnerable groups and individuals. Research Ethics Boards (REBs) typically focus on ensuring the safety of participants. Increasingly, the risk that research poses to researchers is also discussed. Should REBs involve themselves in determining the degree of allowable researcher risk, and if so, upon what should they base that assessment? The evaluation of researcher safety does not appear to be standardized in any national REB protocols. The implications of REB review of researcher risks remain undertheorized. With a critical queer framework, we use the example of sexuality research to illustrate problems that could arise if researcher risk is assessed. We concentrate on two core research ethics guidelines: 1. How research risk compares to the risks of everyday life. 2. How potential harms compare to the anticipated research benefits. Some argue that sexuality research is more deeply scrutinized than research in other fields, viewed as inherently risky for both participants and researchers. The example of sexuality research helps make explicit the moral undertones of procedural ethics. With these moral undertones in mind, we argue that if adopted, researcher risk guidelines should be the purview of pedagogical relationships or workplace safety requirements, not REBs. The commodification and corporatization of research within the academy, research institutes, and professional and political sectors has ignited much attention within the critical qualitative health field. Of particular concern is that the ascendance of neoliberal rationality is increasingly making critical qualitative research transgressive and difficult to practice. We reflect on this concern by deconstructing our experiences collaborating with large teams of interdisciplinary researchers. We offer interpretation of key events, interactions, processes, and existential and material consequences, and discuss lessons learned and productive strategies for working at the margins of the health sciences. Während sich bisherige Forschungsarbeiten primär auf die allgemeine Wirkung akademischer Kooperationsnetzwerke konzentrieren, richten wir den Blick in diesem Aufsatz auf die direkten Interaktionen von WissenschaftlerInnen, um so Einblicke in die Restriktionen und Opportunitäten in unterschiedlichen Beziehungen zu erhalten. In Anlehnung an die strukturationstheoretisch informierte Netzwerktheorie von WINDELER (2001) gehen wir davon aus, dass AkteurInnen mit ihren Handlungen soziale Praktiken konstituieren, und dass Handeln wiederum an soziale Praktiken gebunden ist. Die Beziehungen und Interaktionen zwischen einzelnen AkteurInnen in einem Netzwerk sind in den jeweiligen sozialen Kontext eingebettet, in dem diese sich begegnen. Oder anders ausgedrückt: Hinter sozialen Beziehungen verbergen sich kontextspezifische Netzwerkpraktiken. Von diesen Überlegungen ausgehend stellt sich die Frage, welche Netzwerkpraktiken sich hinter den sozialen Beziehungen, die die Karriereverläufe von ProfessorInnen aufweisen, verbergen. Hierzu haben wir 2015/2016 mit zehn Professorinnen und Professoren aus den Geistes- und Naturwissenschaften verschiedener Universitäten in Deutschland problemzentrierte, biografisch angelegte Interviews zu Sozialbeziehungen im Karriereverlauf durchgeführt. Mithilfe der Grounded-Theory-Methodologie und der biografischen Toposanalyse wurden unterschiedliche Beziehungsmuster herausgearbeitet, die sich in familiäre und nicht familiäre Kontexte unterscheiden lassen. Im Rahmen des Aufsatzes werden solche kontextspezifischen Beziehungsmuster und die dahinterliegenden Netzwerkpraktiken am Beispiel von Karrierenetzwerken in der Wissenschaft illustriert., While previous research primarily focused on the general effect of academic cooperation networks, in this article we take a look at interactions of scientists with a view to gaining insights into the restrictions and opportunities in different relations. In accordance with WINDELER's structuration-informed network theory (2001), we assume that actors through their interactions constitute social practices, and actions in turn, are tied to these practices. Relations and interactions are embedded in the social contexts in which they occur. These context-specific network practices are concealed behind the social relationships. Based on these considerations, the question arises which network practices can be detected behind the social relationships manifested in the career paths of professors. To investigate this, in 2015/2016 we conducted problem-centered biographical interviews on social relations in the career path with ten professors working in the social and natural sciences at different universities in Germany. With the help of grounded theory methodology and biographical topos analysis different relationship patterns in the familial and non-familial context were identified. In this article, we illustrate such context-specific patterns and the network practices behind them using career networks in science.

In this article, we examine the use of a narrative approach to a community-based action research project that sought to support welcoming initiatives for immigrant newcomers in a mid-size city in Ontario, Canada. We employed a place-based lens to situate the insights of community stakeholders as representatives of local organizations and government and in their everyday lives in the city. We reflect critically on whether the narrative approach we devised fostered a dialogical, collaborative, and critical orientation that action research advances, by evaluating the way the project was designed and implemented. We argue that a narrative approach provides valuable avenues to situate community-based action research in the multi-leveled context of research production and elicits the multi-layered elements of meaning-making that are often overly simplified, particularly in positivist approaches., Forum Qualitative Sozialforschung / Forum: Qualitative Social Research, Vol 19, No 2 (2018)

With this article, I explore a new way of how social scientists can share primary qualitative data with each other. More specifically, I examine organized research communities, which are small membership groups of scholars. This hybrid form of data sharing is positioned between informal sharing through collaboration and institutionalized sharing through accessing research archives. Using the global "Successful Transgenerational Entrepreneurship Practices" (STEP) project as an example, I draw attention to the pragmatic practices of data sharing in such communities. The translation of research texts between different languages is a possible impossible (ROTH, 2013). With translation come serious dangers for theorizing when words are translated into terms that do not cover the same conceptual field. This study investigates one such instance, which pertains to the difference between the social and the societal, and which possibly has devastating effects on many theories in the sociocultural, cultural-historical, and societal historical tradition. In the German and Russian versions of his works, Karl MARX used apparently quite distinctly the equivalents of the English adjectives "social [sozial, social'nyj]" and "societal [gesellschaftlich, obščestvennyj]." Many scholars do not distinguish the two notions, and in English, both are translated into "the social." This article exhibits the conceptual distinction MARX makes by explicitly tying the emergence of the universal to society (exemplified in value) rather than to any smaller social group. In this vein, some phenomena, such as consciousness or the psyche are virtually always societal [gesellschaftlich, obščestvennyj]. In diesem Beitrag diskutiere ich, inwiefern der ökosystemische Ansatz von BRONFENBRENNER (1981) als ein Sensibilisierungs- und Betrachtungsraster in Verbindung mit der qualitativen Inhaltsanalyse (MAYRING 2000, 2010) für die Untersuchung von empirischen Phänomen, insbesondere für eine mehrperspektivische Betrachtung (von Erklärungsmustern), geeignet ist. Dies geschieht jeweils unter theoretischer sowie forschungspraktischer Perspektive. Dementsprechend thematisiere ich nicht nur den Mehrwert des ökosystemischen Sensibilisierungs- und Betrachtungsrasters als ein analytisches (Hilfs-) Mittel, sondern ebenso, welche Konsequenzen der Einsatz zur Folge hat. Die verschiedenen Realitätsebenen (Mikro-, Meso-, Exo-, Makrosystem), die BRONFENBRENNER in seinem Ansatz definiert, ermöglichen einen differenzierten Blick auf unterschiedliche Entwicklungskontexte. Die interdisziplinäre Tagung "Gender Studies meets Diskursforschung meets Gender Studies" widmete sich der wechselseitigen Beziehung von Gender- und Diskursforschung. In dem vorliegenden Tagungsessay wollen wir einen Einblick in die Debatten auf der Tagung geben und diese bezogen auf drei methodologische Schwerpunktsetzungen rekonstruieren und weiterführen: 1. theoretische Perspektiven auf das Verhältnis von Diskurs-Macht-Subjekt im Zusammenhang mit Geschlecht und Sexualität; 2. diskursanalytische Perspektiven auf Geschlecht und Sexualität in Textkorpora und 3. empirische Arbeiten am Schnittpunkt von Diskurs- und Geschlechterforschung – Analyse von Interviews, Dokumenten (und Gruppendiskussionen) sowie YouTube Videos. Bei der retrospektiven Betrachtung und Weiterführung der Tagungsbeiträge legen wir ein besonderes Augenmerk auf die Frage, wie Diskurs und Geschlecht jeweils konzeptualisiert und ins Verhältnis gesetzt wurden und welche (Probleme oder welcher Mehrwert der) Gegenstandskonstitution damit verknüpft war(en). Abschließend betrachten wir die Ergebnisse der Tagung und versuchen einen Ausblick. Übergreifendes Ziel unseres Beitrags ist es, Möglichkeiten einer konsequenten Verknüpfung von Diskurs- und Geschlechterforschung aufzuzeigen., The interdisciplinary conference "Gender Studies Meets Discourse Studies Meets Gender Studies: Entanglements, Affinities, Tensions, and Open Questions" focused on the relationship between gender studies and discourse studies. On the one hand this essay provides insights into the conference debates, and on the other it critically discusses the contributions. The following three key aspects provide guidelines for reconstructing and developing the arguments: 1. theoretical perspectives on the relation of discourse/power/subject to gender and sexuality; 2. discourse analysis focusing on gender and sexuality in written (media) texts; and 3. empirical research informed by discourse studies and gender studies—analysis of interviews, documents, focus groups, and YouTube videos. Retrospectively discussing and elaborating the conference contributions, we will particularly pay attention to the question of how discourse and gender were conceptualized and interrelated. Subsequently, we critically reflect upon objects of investigation and their implied approaches. Finally, we consider the outcomes of the conference and future prospects. Overall, the essay aims at outlining the potential of a consistent combination of gender studies and discourse studies.

Diferentes cuestiones han sido discutidas en torno a la etnografía virtual en el marco de los estudios de internet, tales como los desafíos para la noción de campo, las conexiones online y offline, las implicancias de la mediación tecnológica y los aspectos éticos del proceso de investigación. El artículo se aproxima a un aspecto menos abordado: las interacciones multi-plataforma en sitios de redes sociales en internet (SRS). El estudio etnográfico virtual realizado en la comunidad de profesionales de la comunicación CórdobaPR, permite retroalimentar las discusiones en torno a la inmersión y delimitación del campo, las posibilidades de registro, la sistematización y análisis de información, así como la mutación de plataformas web y migración de usuarios. The recording and verbatim transcription of interviews is often considered to be one of the more tedious but necessary aspects of the in-depth qualitative research process. While transcription is undoubtedly a necessary methodological tool for researchers focusing specifically on discourse and language, it has also been widely adopted by researchers across the social sciences, and is sometimes advocated as a means of inherently improving the rigour of qualitative research. Based on recent experience from fieldwork in rural China, where I had initially expected to utilise the verbatim transcription method, in this article I critically assess the role of transcription in the design, implementation, and outcome of cross-cultural multilingual qualitative research. I argue that, in certain cases, verbatim transcription can limit the kind of information that may be considered valuable as data, and delay the processes of data reduction and analysis, thus separating the researcher from the fieldwork event. In response to these critiques, I propose an alternative approach to collecting, categorising, coding, and analysing qualitative data: the systematic and reflexive interviewing and reporting (SRIR) method. The SRIR method utilises semi-structured and unstructured interviews conducted by two or more researchers. After completing an interview, researchers engage in reflexive dialogue, and jointly write interview and analysis reports. In this way, the SRIR method begins the process of coding and analysis in situ, thus facilitating critical engagement with emergent themes during fieldwork rather than afterwards. The method is, therefore, ideally suited to research projects that are designed to be open ended and flexible, in order to follow up on new information and potentially even change focus. In this article, we explore narrative inquiry data we collected with women who attempted to have a natural, drug-free childbirth for the birth of their first child. The data presented come from semi-structured life story interviews with six women who live in a metropolitan city in the mid-southern United States. Using creative analytic practice (CAP), the women's experiences are presented as a composite poem. The (re)presentation of the women's narratives in the poem emphasizes the tensions between what women desired and planned for in contrast to what they actually experienced during pregnancy and birth. The poem illustrates the politics of agency, the ways in which consent is bypassed or assumed in some medical institutions in the United States, and the resilience of the women. Kulturen sind für einzelne Individuen Umgrenzungen von Wirklichkeit. Für die Gesamtheit sind Kulturen Grenzziehungen, die Erkennungshilfen und zugleich Anweisungen abgeben für den richtigen Umgang mit Menschen und Dingen. Getragen werden sie von Formen kollektiven Handelns, und in der Aneignung werden sie zu Wissen. Das Potenzial der Ethnografie für die Analyse dieses Kulturellen erwächst zum einen aus den Grenzziehungen innerhalb der Ethnografie, die anders als in den Sozialwissenschaften verlaufen: nicht zwischen standardisierter und nicht-standardisierter Sozialforschung, nicht zwischen Naturalismus und Konstruktivismus, sondern zwischen Natürlichkeit und Künstlichkeit, Teilnahme und Experiment. Collectively, cultures are demarcations enabling the identification of people and things. At the same time cultures provide instructions for adequately handling people and things. These demarcations are maintained by forms of collective action that becomes collective knowledge. The potential of ethnography for the analysis of culture lays in criss-crossing the common antagonisms in the social sciences. Boundaries are not drawn between qualitative and quantitative methods, nor between naturalism and constructivism. Rather they are drawn between natural and artificial settings, and between methods of participation engaging with the field and the experiment as a method creating social conditions artificially. The potential of ethnography lays within “border crossing” between field participation and scientific observation. Over the last forty years, case study research has undergone substantial methodological development. This evolution has resulted in a pragmatic, flexible research approach, capable of providing comprehensive in-depth understanding of a diverse range of issues across a number of disciplines. Change and progress have stemmed from parallel influences of historical transformations in approaches to research and individual researcher's preferences, perspectives, and interpretations of this design. Researchers who have contributed to the development of case study research come from diverse disciplines with different philosophical perspectives, resulting in a variety of definitions and approaches. For the researcher new to using case study, such variety can create a confusing platform for its application. In this article, we explore the evolution of case study research, discuss methodological variations, and summarize key elements with the aim of providing guidance on the available options for researchers wanting to use case study in their work. Participatory approaches to research are gaining popularity in health and wellness disciplines because of their potential to bridge gaps between research and practice and promote health equity. A number of guidelines have been developed to help research-practitioners gauge the quality of participatory health research (PHR). In light of the increasing popularization of this approach in the field of public health, there is a need to check in with current practitioners to see if their practices are still reflective of past guidelines. The aim of this study was to understand how research-practitioners currently conceptualize the quality of participatory health research in particular. Using phenomenographic inquiry, we interviewed 13 researchers who described their experience of PHR. We identified 15 categories of description and visually represented the relationship between the categories using an outcome space. Our findings suggest that conceptualizations of what is considered high quality PHR have remained consistent. This reliability bodes well for the development of quality criteria for participatory health research. We discuss implications for scaling up this study to compare quality criteria beyond a North American context.
