The mechanical performance of tissue-engineered grafts is crucial in determining their functional properties, integration with native tissue and long-term repair outcome post-implantation. To date, most approaches for testing the mechanical properties of tissue-engineered grafts are non-sterile and invasive. There is an urgent need to develop novel sterile approaches for online monitoring mechanical properties of engineered tissues in order to ensure these engineered products meet the desired mechanical strength prior to implantation. In this paper, we overview various approaches for mechanical testing of engineered tissues, which span from traditional methods to medical imaging concepts in magnetic resonance elastography, ultrasound elastography, and optical coherence elastography. We focused on the applicability of these methods to the manufacturing of tissue-engineered products online, e.g., if such approach provides a sterile monitoring capacity and is capable of defining mechanical heterogeneity in engineered tissues throughout their growth in vitro in real-time. The review delves into various imaging modalities that employ distinct methods for inducing displacement within the sample, utilizing either strain-based or shear wave-based approaches. This displacement can be achieved through external stimulation or by harnessing ambient vibrations. Subsequently, the imaging process captures and visualizes the resultant displacement. We specifically highlight the advantages of novel non-invasive imaging methods such as ultrasound elastography and optical coherence elastography to assess the mechanical properties of engineered tissues in vitro, as well as their potential applications in cancer study, drug screening and the in vivo evaluation of the engineered tissues. The present study investigated the lasting effects of sickness presenteeism on well-being and innovative job performance in the demanding Chinese work context compounded with the precarities of the post-pandemic business environment. Adopting the conservation of resources (COR) theory perspective, especially its proposition of compensation of resources, we incorporated social resources at work (supervisory support and collegial support) as joint moderators in the presenteeism–outcomes relationship. We employed a panel design in which all variables were measured twice with 6 months in between. Data were obtained from 323 Chinese employees working in diverse industries in Taiwan. We found that after controlling for the baseline level of well-being, presenteeism did not have a lasting effect on employees' exhaustion. However, presenteeism did have a negative lasting effect on employees' innovative behavior 6 months later. Moreover, we found a significant three-way interaction of presenteeism, supervisory support, and collegial support on employees' innovative job performance, after controlling for the baseline level of performance. Specifically, when working under illness, employees displayed the best innovative performance with high levels of both supervisory and collegial support, the worst performance with both support being low, and the intermediate when any one of the support being high. This can be taken as the preliminary evidence to support the COR proposition of resource caravans, showing that supervisory support and collegial support compensated for each other as critical resources in alleviating the impact of working under sickness on employees' innovative performance. Theoretical implications of the findings are discussed, taking into account the macro-cultural context of the East Asian Confucian societies. We also reflected on the managerial implications of the lasting damages of sickness presenteeism and benefits of mobilizing social resources on employees' well-being and performance.

The fact of ovarian reserve (OR) decreased in women with recurrent miscarriage has been well known. However, Whether OR would decrease with increasing numbers of previous miscarriages (PMs) is still unclear. To address this, OR parameters of following four groups' patients were evaluated: 99 women with one previous miscarriage (PM1), 46 women with two previous miscarriages (PM2) and 35 women with three or more previous miscarriages (PM3). The control group included 213 women without a history of miscarriage (PM0). The correlation of OR parameters and the proportion of diminished ovarian reserve (DOR) patients between the four groups were analyzed using Kendall's Tau-B coefficients. The results showed the median anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) levels were 4.04, 3.40, 3.14 and 2.55 respectively in the PM0, PM1, PM2 and PM3 groups, respectively (H=15.99, P = 0.001); the median antral follicle counts (AFCs) were 10, 8, 8 and 6, respectively (H=24.53, P < 0.001); and the proportions of DOR patients were 10.8%, 15.2%, 23.9% and 31.4% (χ2 = 13.01, P = 0.005). In addition, AMH level and AFC correlated negatively with the number of PMs (correlation coefficients -0.154, P < 0.001; -0.205, P < 0.001 respectively), the proportion of DOR patients correlated positively with the number of PMs (correlation coefficients 0.156, P = 0.001). After stratification by age, AMH and AFC levels were still significantly lower in the PM3 group than the PM0 group (P < 0.05). The proportion of DOR patients between the PM0 and PM3 groups was statistically significant (P < 0.001). This study showed that AMH levels and AFCs decreased as well as the proportion of DOR patients increased significantly as the number of PMs increased. Pleurotus tuber-regium is an edible and medicinal sclerotium-producing mushroom. The sclerotia of this mushroom also serve as food and folk medicine. Based on the description of its monokaryon genome, sequenced with Illumina and PacBio sequencing technologies, comparative transcriptomic analysis using RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) was employed to study its mechanism of sclerotium formation. The de novo assembled genome is 35.82 Mb in size with a N50 scaffold size of 4.29 Mb and encodes 12,173 putative proteins. Expression analysis demonstrated that 1,146 and 1,249 genes were upregulated and downregulated with the formation of sclerotia, respectively. The differentially expressed genes were associated with substrate decomposition, the oxidation-reduction process, cell wall synthesis, and other biological processes in P. tuber-regium. These genomic and transcriptomic resources provide useful information for the mechanism underlying sclerotium formation in P. tuber-regium. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Soil salinity is one of the major factors that limit the area of cultivable land and yield potential of crops. The ability of salt tolerance varies with plant species. Peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) is a moderately salt-sensitive and economically important crop, however, their biological processes involved in salt-stress response remain unclear. In this study, we investigated the role of A. hypogaea L. ABSCISIC ACID INSENSITIVE 4s (AhABI4s) in salt tolerance and elucidated its mode of action in peanuts. The results showed that the downregulation of AhABI4 s via whole plant virus-induced gene silencing has enhanced the survival rate, biomass accumulation, and root/shoot ratio of peanut seedlings in response to salt-stress. Transcriptomics, quantitative proteomics, and phosphoproteomic analyses were performed using AhABI4 s-silenced and Mock plants. The expression pattern of 15,247 genes, 1,900 proteins, and 2,620 phosphorylation sites were affected by silencing of AhABI4 s in peanut leaf and root after sodium chloride (NaCl) treatment. Among them, 63 potential downstream target genes of ABI4 changed consistently at both transcription and translation levels, and the protein/phosphorylation levels of 31 ion transporters/channels were also affected. Electrophoretic mobility shift assays (EMSA) showed that ABI4 was able to bind to the promoters of HSP70, fructokinase (FRK), and pyruvate kinase (PK) coding genes in vitro. In addition, we also detected a binding preference of AhABI4 for CACT(G/T)GCA motif in the promoters of down-regulated genes in peanut leaf. Collectively, the potential downstream targets which were regulated at the levels of transcription and translation, binding preference, and in vivo phosphorylation sites that had been revealed in this study will provide new insight into the AhABI4s -mediated salt tolerance regulation mechanism in peanuts. Schizophrenia patients often show impaired facial expression recognition, which leads to difficulties in adaptation to daily life. However, it remains unclear whether the deficit is at the perceptual or higher cognitive level of facial emotion processing. Recent studies have shown that earlier face-evoked event-related potential (ERP) components such as N170 and P100 can effectively distinguish schizophrenia patients from healthy controls; however, findings for later waveforms are ambiguous. To clarify this point, in this study we compared electroencephalographic signals in schizophrenia patients and control subjects during a facial expression judgment task. We found that group effects of the occipital N170 and frontal lobe contingent negative variation (CNV) were both significant. The effect sizes (ESs) of N170 and CNV amplitudes were generally medium or small, whereas that of CNV slope for an upright face was large (>0.8). Moreover, N170 amplitude and CNV slope but not CNV amplitude was correlated with Personal and Social Performance (PSP) Scale score. These results suggest that the slope of CNV drift during facial expression processing has a potential clinical value for schizophrenia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Although pre-treatment with a GnRH agonist can reduce the size of adenomyosis lesions, the supra-physiological hormone level induced by controlled ovarian hyperstimulation (COH) may negate the usefulness of the GnRH agonist in patients with adenomyosis lesions, leading to continued poor outcomes in fresh embryo transfer cycles during in vitro fertilization (IVF). It is unclear whether GnRH agonist pre-treatment before starting the long GnRH agonist protocol for IVF/ICSI (intracytoplasmic sperm injection) can improve cumulative live birth rate (CLBR) of infertile women with adenomyosis. Method: In this retrospective cohort study, a total of 374 patients diagnosed as adenomyosis (477 cycles) underwent IVF/ICSI with long GnRH agonist protocol with or without GnRH agonist pre-treatment between January 2009 and June 2018. Logistic regression was used to assess the association between GnRH agonist pre-treatment and pregnancy outcome after adjusting for confounding factors. Results: The live birth rate in fresh embryo transfer cycles was higher in the non-pre-treatment group than in the GnRH agonist pre-treatment group (37.7 vs. 21.2%, P = 0.028); the adjusted odds ratio (OR) for the long agonist protocol without pre-treatment was 1.966 (95% CI: 0.9–4.296, P = 0.09). The CLBR was higher in the non-pre-treatment group than in the GnRH agonist pre-treatment group (40.50 vs. 27.90%, P = 0.019); the adjusted OR for the long agonist protocol without pre-treatment was 1.361 (95% CI: 0.802–2.309, P = 0.254). Conclusion: Our results indicated that GnRH agonist pre-treatment before starting the long GnRH agonist protocol does not improve the live birth rate in fresh embryo transfer cycles or CLBR in infertile women with adenomyosis after IVF/ICSI treatment when compared to that in non-pre-treated patients. Heavy metal contamination in herbal medicines is a global threat to human beings especially at levels above known threshold concentrations. The concentrations of five heavy metals cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), arsenic (As), mercury (Hg) and copper (Cu) were investigated using Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) with 1773 samples around the world. According to Chinese Pharmacopoeia, 30.51% (541) samples were detected with at least one over-limit metal. The over-limit ratio for Pb was 5.75% (102), Cd at 4.96% (88), As at 4.17% (74), Hg at 3.78% (67), and of Cu, 1.75% (31). For exposure assessment, Pb, Cd, As, and Hg have resulted in higher than acceptable risks in 25 kinds of herbs. The maximal Estimated Daily Intake of Pb in seven herbs, of Cd in five, of Hg in four, and As in three exceeded their corresponding Provisional Tolerable Daily Intakes. In total 25 kinds of herbs present an unacceptable risk as assessed with the Hazard Quotient or Hazard Index. Additionally, the carcinogenic risks were all under acceptable limits. Notably, As posed the highest risk in all indicators including Estimated Daily Intake, Hazard Index, and carcinogenic risks. Therefore further study on enrichment effect of different states of As and special attention to monitoring shall be placed on As related contamination. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
