PurposeThe study analyzed the changes in corneal surface shape after replacing orthokeratology lenses carrying a small base curve (BC) diameter.MethodsIn this retrospective study, we included ~54 right eyes belonging to 54 myopic children who insisted on wearing an orthokeratology (ortho-k BC 6.0 mm) lens for more than 12 months and then replaced the second ortho-k (BC 6.0 mm or BC 5.0 mm) lens ~12 months. The children were categorized into two groups based on the design of the BC of the replaced ortho-k lens 6.0/5.0 and 6.0/6.0.ResultsThe ratio of axial length (AL) elongation in the 6.0/5.0 group was significantly less than in the 6.0/6.0 group (−0.015 ± 0.014 mm/M vs. −0.005 ± 0.012 mm/M, t = −2.672, P = 0.010). After replacing the BC 5.0 ortho-k lens, the optical zone (8.19 ± 2.60 mm2 vs. 9.64 ± 1.57 mm2, t = −2.345, p = 0.023), reverse zone (31.64 ± 5.80 mm2 vs. 34.86 ± 4.61 mm2, t = −2.169, p = 0.035), and treatment zone (17.16 ± 3.94 mm2 vs. 22.96 ± 2.59 mm2, t = −6.049, p < 0.001) were all smaller than those in the 6.0/6.0 group. In the 6.0/5.0 group, the optical zone (wearing more than 1 month as first: 11.16 ± 2.12 mm2, the last inspection before replacing lens as before: 10.87 ± 1.90 mm2), reverse curve zone (first: 22.03 ± 3.11 mm2, before: 26.24 ± 5.06 mm2), and treatment zone (first: 35.97 ± 5.54 mm2, before: 37.11 ± 6.04 mm2) were all greater than these after replacing ortho-k lens (all P < 0.001).ConclusionReplacing an ortho-k lens with a smaller BC resulted in a larger decrease in the mean central corneal zone and a substantial increase in the paracentral corneal zone. In addition, the ortho-k lens with a smaller BC does not increase the decentration distance and contributes to effective myopia control.

BackgroundPrevious observational research has indicated a correlation between Parkinson’s disease (PD) and multiple cancers; but the causality remains unclear. Thus, we utilized Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis to explore the potential causal link between PD and various cancers.MethodsWe conducted a bidirectional two-sample Mendelian randomization (TSMR) of genetic variants associated with PD and 14 types of cancers. Summary statistics on PD and 14 types of cancers were obtained from the International Parkinson’s Disease Genomics Consortium and the study by Sakaue et al. The primary method employed was inverse variance weighted (IVW), complemented by multiple sensitivity analyses to evaluate heterogeneity and pleiotropy. The false discovery rate (FDR) was employed to control the false positive rate of multiple hypothesis testing.ResultsFollowing rigorous sensitivity analyses and corrections, our findings revealed suggestive associations between PD and certain cancers. We observed that PD decreases the risk of gastric cancer and colorectal cancer (OR = 0.936, 95% CI = 0.881–0.995, p = 0.034, P FDR = 0.239; OR = 0.955, 95% CI = 0.912–0.999, p = 0.046, P FDR = 0.215), while increasing the risk of breast cancer (OR = 1.043, 95% CI = 1.004–1.084, p = 0.029, P FDR = 0.402). Notably, we found no evidence supporting a reverse causal relationship. Additionally, in the reverse pathway, skin cancer demonstrated a suggestive causal relationship with PD (OR = 0.913, 95% CI = 0.857–0.973, p = 0.005, P FDR = 0.066).ConclusionOur MR analysis provides evidence supporting unidirectional suggestive causal relationships between PD and certain cancers. These findings enrich our comprehension of the intricate interplay between PD and cancer, warranting further investigation into the underlying biological mechanisms.

PurposeThis study analyzed the corneal surface shape following overnight orthokeratology with different optical zone diameters.MethodsA total of 82 eyes belonging to 41 myopic children who completed 1 month of the orthokeratology (ortho-k) lens wear at the Eye Hospital of Wenzhou Medical University from January 2022 to January 2023 were retrospectively analyzed. According to the size of the base curve (BC) of ortho-k lens, patients were divided into BC 5.0 and BC 6.0 groups. The changes in decentration distance and corneal refraction of the two groups after the ortho-k lens wear were analyzed. Independent sample t-tests were used to compare these two outcome measures between the two groups.ResultsThe decentration distance of BC 5.0 group (0.37 ± 0.19 mm) was significantly lower than that of BC 6.0 group (0.49 ± 0.25 mm, t = −2.330, p = 0.022). In the BC 5.0 group, the direction of decentration was superonasal in 3 cases, inferonasal in 2 cases, inferotemporal in 21 cases, and superotemporal in 6 cases. In the BC 6.0 group, the direction of decentration was superonasal in 2 cases, inferonasal in 2 cases, inferotemporal in 27 cases, and superotemporal in 19 cases. The optical zone area (8.19 ± 2.96 mm2) and reverse curve zone area (30.05 ± 6.74 mm2) in the BC 5.0 group were significantly lower than in the BC 6.0 group (10.42 ± 2.03 mm2, t = −4.043, p < 0.001; 38.21 ± 4.77 mm2, t = −6.422, p < 0.001). The change in the rate of refraction in the horizontal direction in BC 5.0 group were significant higher than in BC 6.0 group.ConclusionBase curve 5.0 mm ortho-k lens is better positioned than BC 6.0 mm lens. A small BC ortho-k forms a smaller optical zone and reverse curve area, which might get a greater aiameter of alignment curve to facilitate positioning better than the traditional BC lens. In addition, a small BC lens increases positive refraction in the peripheral area, resulting in a greater negative pressure than the traditional BC lens.

PurposeTo investigate the contrast sensitivity function (CSF) changes in simple high myopia (SHM) and evaluate the correlations between these changes with the early changes in the retinal microstructure.MethodsThis prospective study comprised 81 subjects, 20 with emmetropia (EM), 26 with low myopia and moderate myopia (LM/MM), and 35 with SHM. The area under the log CSF curve (AULCSF) and the cut-off spatial frequency (Cut-off SF) were employed as measures of CSF. Adaptive optics (AO) was employed to quantify the cone density, spacing, and regularity. The thickness and blood flow of the retinal sublayers were determined from vertical and horizontal optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) A-scans. Swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT) was employed to analyze the choroidal thickness (CT) and choroidal vascularity using a custom algorithm. Differences in the retinal and choroidal parameters, cone distribution, AULCSF, and Cut-off SF were compared among the three groups. Allergic rhinitis is a common chronic disease, and its high incidence has a great negative impact on the quality of life of many people, especially children. In this paper, through in-depth analysis of NOS2 gene polymorphism, the protective mechanism of NOS2 gene against AR was studied to provide theoretical and scientific basis for the diagnosis of children with AR. It was concluded that the concentration of Immunoglobulin E (IgE) in rs2297516 was 0.24 IU/mL compared with that in normal children. rs3794766 specific IgE concentration in the children group was increased by 0.36 IU/mL, which was higher than that in the healthy children group; the difference of rs7406657 specific IgE concentration between the children group and the healthy group was 0.03 IU/mL. The total serum IgE concentration in the healthy children group was lower than that in the infant group, and the change of Rs3794766 was the least, followed by rs2297516 and rs7406657. This means that rs7406657 is the highest, rs2297516 had general genetic correlation with AR patients, and rs3794766 had the least genetic correlation with AR patients. Among the three groups of SNP loci, the healthy children group was higher than the patient children group, indicating that AR reduces the gene frequency of the three loci, and the reduction of gene frequency will also increase the susceptibility of children to AR, because the frequency of gene occurrence will affect the gene sequence. In conclusion, smart medicine and gene SNPS can promote the detection and treatment of AR.

Syndromic deafness caused by PTPN11 gene mutation has gradually come into the public’s view. In the past, many people did not understand its application mechanism and role and only focused on non-syndromic deafness, so the research on syndromic deafness is not in-depth and there is a large degree of lack of research in this area. In order to let the public know more about the diagnosis and gene function of deafness caused by PTPN11 gene mutation syndrome, this paper used deep learning technology to study the diagnosis and gene function of deafness caused by syndrome with the concept of intelligent medical treatment, and finally drew a feasible conclusion. This paper provided a theoretical and practical basis for the diagnosis of deafness caused by PTPN11 gene mutation syndrome and the study of gene function. This paper made a retrospective analysis of the clinical data of 85 deaf children who visited Hunan Children’s Hospital,P.R. China from January 2020 to December 2021. The conclusion were as follows: Children aged 1–6 years old had multiple syndrome deafness, while children under 1 year old and children aged 6–12 years old had relatively low probability of complex deafness; girls were not easy to have comprehensive deafness, but there was no specific basis to prove that the occurrence of comprehensive deafness was necessarily related to gender; the hearing loss of patients with Noonan Syndrome was mainly characterized by moderate and severe damage and abnormal inner ear and auditory nerve; most of the mutation genes in children were located in Exon1 and Exon3, with a total probability of 57.65%. In the course of the experiment, it was found that deep learning was effective in the diagnosis of deafness with PTPN11 gene mutation syndrome. This technology could be applied to medical diagnosis to facilitate the diagnosis and treatment of more patients with deafness with syndrome. Intelligent medical treatment was also becoming a hot topic nowadays. By using this concept to analyze and study the pathological characteristics of deafness caused by PTPN11 gene mutation syndrome, it not only promoted patients to find diseases in time, but also helped doctors to diagnose and treat such diseases, which was of great significance to patients and doctors. The study of PTPN11 gene mutation syndrome deafness was also of great significance in genetics. The analysis of its genes not only enriched the gene pool, but also provided reference for future research.
