The prediction accuracy of atmospheric visibility significantly impacts daily life. However, there is a relative scarcity of research on post-processing methods for visibility obtained from the WRF-Chem atmospheric chemistry model results. In order to explore a more accurate method for visibility calculation, we conducted a study on the meteorological conditions in the East China region during a heavy pollution period from October 1 to 23 in the year of 2022. The meteorological data were processed using both the XGBoost (XGB) model and the IMPROVE to calculate visibility. The results indicate that XGB outperforms the IMPROVE in various aspects. The visibility improved from a correlation of 0.56–0.71 with the use of XGB. And in comparison with the IMPROVE equation, XGB demonstrated a statistically significant reduction in RMSE by 1.96 km. Even in regions where the IMPROVE performs poorly, XGB demonstrates superior performance. In regions where the correlation simulated by the IMPROVE equation is less than 0.2 (Anqing and Nanyang), XGB still performs well, achieving correlations of 0.69 (Anqing) and 0.68 (Nanyang). Throughout the entire study period, the average visibility results obtained by XGB deviate by only 0.07 km from the observed values. These findings underscore the importance of incorporating the XGBoost model into WRF-Chem visibility simulations, as it significantly improves the accuracy of visibility predictions.

IntroductionTertiary lymphoid structures (TLSs) are analogues of secondary lymphoid organs that contain various immune cells. The spatial distribution, maturation and composition of TLSs have differential effects on prognosis, and the roles of TLSs in gastric adenocarcinoma (GA) have not been revealed.MethodsThus, we evaluated the prognostic value of TLSs in GA through analysis of bulk RNA sequencing(RNA-seq) data from public databases and validated our findings in tumour samples from the Fudan University Shanghai Cancer Center (FUSCC) cohort. The spatial distribution,maturation, and composition of TLSs in GA were analysed by reviewing H&E-stained sections and by multiplex immunofluorescence (mIF) staining.ResultsWe found that TLSs, especially TLSs with germinal centres (GCs) and TLSs located in the invasive margin (IM), were correlated with prolonged overall survival (OS). Second, analysis of public RNA-seq data showed that high dendritic cell (DC) scores were a favourable prognostic factor in GA patients with high scores for both TLSs and GCs. In the FUSCC cohort, DC-LAMP+ DCs weresignificantly enriched in IM-TLSs with GCs, suggesting a potential correlation between the tumour immune activation milieu and the DC abundance. Third, compared to that in TLSs without GCs, the proportion of FOXP3+CD8+ Treg cells was significantly decreased in IM-TLSs with GCs, and the percentage of PD1+CD20+ B cells was significantly increased in TLSs with GCs.DiscussionOur results demonstrate that the spatial arrangement and maturation of TLSs significantly affect prognosis and indicate that TLSs could be a new additional factor for histopathological evaluation.

Background: The Juan-Bi decoction (JBD) is a classic traditional Chinese medicines (TCMs) prescription for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). However, the active compounds of the JBD in RA treatment remain unclear.Aim: The aim of this study is to screen effective compounds in the JBD for RA treatment using systems pharmacology and experimental approaches.Method: Botanical drugs and compounds in the JBD were acquired from multiple public TCM databases. All compounds were initially screened using absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion, and toxicity (ADMET) and physicochemical properties, and then a target prediction was performed. RA pathological genes were acquired from the DisGeNet database. Potential active compounds were screened by constructing a compound–target–pathogenic gene (C-T-P) network and calculating the cumulative interaction intensity of the compounds on pathogenic genes. The effectiveness of the compounds was verified using lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced RAW.264.7 cells and collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) mouse models.Results: We screened 15 potentially active compounds in the JBD for RA treatment. These compounds primarily act on multiple metabolic pathways, immune pathways, and signaling transduction pathways. Furthermore, in vivo and in vitro experiments showed that bornyl acetate (BAC) alleviated joint damage, and inflammatory cells infiltrated and facilitated a smooth cartilage surface via the suppression of the steroid hormone biosynthesis.Conclusion: We screened potential compounds in the JBD for the treatment of RA using systems pharmacology approaches. In particular, BAC had an anti-rheumatic effect, and future studies are required to elucidate the underlying mechanisms.

IntroductionThe study explored the relationship between subjective well-being and the quality of life among older adults. It highlights the importance of understanding how these factors are interconnected in the context of an aging population.MethodsDescriptive statistics were used to analyze the scores of general demographic characteristics, subjective wellbeing and quality of life. Simple correlation analysis and canonical correlation analysis were employed to analyze the relationship between subjective wellbeing and quality of life among older adults.ResultsData from 892 older adults were collected. Canonical correlation analysis revealed four pairs of canonical variables, with the first four pairs of canonical correlation coefficients all being statistically significant (0.695, 0.179, 0.147, 0.121) (p < 0.05), and the first pair of canonical variables explaining 93.03% of the information content. From the canonical loading coefficients, Vitality and mental health contributed the most to the quality of life (U1) canonical variable. The canonical variable V1, which corresponded to subjective wellbeing, was reflected by a combination of positive affect, negative affect, positive experience and negative experience. X1 (physical functioning), X2 (role-physical), X3 (bodily pain), X4 (general health), X5 (vitality), X6 (social functioning), X7 (role-emotional) and X8 (mental health) were positively correlated with Y1 (positive affect) and Y3 (positive experience), negatively correlated with Y2 (negative affect) and Y4 (negative experience). Cross-loadings revealed that physical functioning, bodily pain, general health, vitality, social functioning and mental health were the main factors reflecting the subjective wellbeing of older adults.DiscussionAs quality of life among older adults was highly correlated with subjective wellbeing, appropriate measures should be taken to account for individual characteristics of older adults, and various factors should be integrated to improve their subjective wellbeing.

BackgroundStatin therapy has been shown to reduce mortality in a wide range of cancer types and overall stages. Still, there is uncertainty about its efficacy in increasing survival among advanced cancer patients.MethodsWe conducted a meta-analysis with data from all studies that compared the hazard ratio of overall survival, cancer-specific survival, and progression-free survival in patients with advanced-stage cancer who receive statin therapy. Studies were selected from the PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science databases from their inception to December 31, 2022. Cancer types are limited to those rarely screened during the annual examination and more likely to develop into advanced stages, such as lung, pancreatic and ovarian cancers. This resulted in 27 studies eligible for meta-analysis.ResultsStatin therapy was associated with a 26% decreased risk of overall survival (HR, 0.74; 95% CI, 0.67, 0.81), 26% decreased risk of cancer-specific survival (HR, 0.74; 95% CI, 0.61-0.88), and 24% decreased risk of progression-free survival (HR, 0.76; 95% CI, 0.65-0.87) for advanced-stage cancer patients. The associations were not attenuated or reinforced by study design, study regions, cancer types, or other medical care. Concomitant use of other anticancer medications did not result in confounding effects.ConclusionsStatin therapy produces significant benefits on overall survival and cancer-specific survival. Although the benefits might be lower than the approved immunotherapy medications, its cost-effectiveness could lead to dramatic health consequences. Concomitant use of statin drugs as cancer treatments is highly recommended in future clinical trials.

The tumor microenvironment (TME) is a crucial driving factor for tumor progression and it can hinder the body’s immune response by altering the metabolic activity of immune cells. Both tumor and immune cells maintain their proliferative characteristics and physiological functions through transporter-mediated regulation of nutrient acquisition and metabolite efflux. Transporters also play an important role in modulating immune responses in the TME. In this review, we outline the metabolic characteristics of the TME and systematically elaborate on the effects of abundant metabolites on immune cell function and transporter expression. We also discuss the mechanism of tumor immune escape due to transporter dysfunction. Finally, we introduce some transporter-targeted antitumor therapeutic strategies, with the aim of providing new insights into the development of antitumor drugs and rational drug usage for clinical cancer therapy.

IntroductionInternet addiction (IA) is becoming a significant public health issue that requires urgent attention, especially for adolescents. Previous studies mainly focused on the risk factors of Internet addiction and drawn some conclusions. The purpose of this study is to investigate the Internet addiction status and concurrent psychological problems in adolescent groups, and explore the differences in the relationship between IA and psychological problems in adolescents from gender and grade.MethodsA cross-sectional study was conducted among students of junior and senior high school in 21 prefecture-level cities of Guangdong Province. The Young Diagnostic Questionnaire (YDQ) and the validated Chinese version of the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale-21 (DASS-21) were used to assess participants’ Internet addiction and psychological status. Two-way ANOVA was used to verify the interaction between gender and Internet addiction, grade and Internet addiction on psychological problems. When the interaction was statistically significant, simple effect analysis was further carried out.ResultsThe prevalence of problematic Internet use (PIU), depression, anxiety, and stress symptoms among adolescents were 16.32%, 30.16%, 35.97% and 18.80% respectively. ObjectiveThe measurement of the quality of life (QOL) in patients with breast cancer can evaluate the therapeutic effects of medical treatments and help to provide reference for clinical decisions. The minimum clinically important difference (MCID) can be better used in clinical interpretation than the traditional statistical significance. Based on the anchors, a variety of ways including traditional and updated anchor-based methods were used to explore most suitable MCID, so that to find better interpretation on scores of the scale QLICP-BR(V2.0) (Quality of Life Instruments for Cancer Patients-Breast cancer).MethodsAccording to the investigation data of breast cancer patients before and after treatment, the most relevant indicators in various domains of QLICP-BR (V2.0) was found as an anchor to statistically analyze the value of MCID, and three analysis methods of anchors were used: Traditional anchor-based method, ROC curve method, multiple linear regression model analysis. Anchors are divided into four standards according to the degree of change in the treatment effect: one grade difference (Standard A), at least one grade difference (Standard B), one grade better (Standard C), better (Standard D). The final MCID value is selected from different statistical methods and classification standards that are most suitable for clinicians to use.ResultsUsing Q29 of the EORTC QLQ-C30 as an anchor has the highest correlation with each domain of QLICP. The order of magnitude of MCID values among the four standard groups is: standard A< Standard C< Standard B< Standard D. The MCID value obtained by the ROC curve method is the most stable and is least affected by the sample size, and the MCID value obtained by the multiple linear regression model is the least. After comparisons and discussions, Standard C in the multiple linear regression model is used to determine the final MCID, which is the closest to other methods. After integer the MCID values of Physical domain (PHD), Psychological domain (PSD), Social domain (SOD), Common symptoms and side effect domain (SSD), Core/general module (CGD), Specific domain (SPD), Total score(TOT) can be taken as 15,10, 10, 11, 10, 9 and 9, respectively.ConclusionIn the evaluation of the QOL of breast cancer patients, although the results of MCID values produced by different methods are different, the results are relatively close. The anchor-based methods make the results of MCID more clinically interpretable by introducing clinical variables, and clinicians and researchers can choose the appropriate method according to the research purpose.

Introduction: Chronic heart disease (CHD) is a common comorbidity of patients receiving endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) for abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA). The explicit relationship between ventricular systolic function and EVAR complication of thrombotic events is unknown.Methods: In this study, we proposed a three-dimensional numerical model coupled with the lumped-elements heart model, which is capable of simulating thrombus formation in diverse systolic functions. The relation of cardiac functions and the predicted risk of thrombus formation in the aorta and/or endograft of 4 patients who underwent EVAR was investigated. Relative risks for thrombus formation were identified using machine-learning algorithms.Results: The computational results demonstrate that thrombus tended to form on the interior side of the aorta arch and iliac branches, and cardiac function can affect blood flow field and affect thrombus formation, which is consistent with the four patients' post-operative imaging follow-up. We also found that RRT, OSI, TAWSS in thrombosis area are lower than whole average. In addition, we found that the thrombus formation has negative correlations with the maximum ventricular contractile force (r = −.281 ± .101) and positive correlations with the minimum ventricular contractile force (r = .238 ± .074), whereas the effect of heart rate (r = −.015 ± .121) on thrombus formation is not significant.Conclusion: In conclusion, changes in ventricular systolic function may alter the risk of thrombotic events after EVAR repair, which could provide insight into the selection of adjuvant therapy strategies for AAA patients with CHD.

High penetration of electric vehicles (EVs) in an uncontrolled manner could have disruptive impacts on the power grid, however, such impacts could be mitigated through an EV demand response program. The successful implementation of an efficient, effective, and aggregated demand response from EV charging depends on the incentive pricing mechanism and the load shifting protocols. In this study, a genetic algorithm-based multi-objective optimization model is developed to generate hourly dynamic Time-of-Use electricity tariffs and facilitate the decision making in load scheduling. As an illustrative example, a case study was carried out to examine the effect of applying demand response for EVs in Beijing, China. With the assumptions made, the maximum peak load can be reduced by 9.8% and the maximum customer savings for the EVs owners can reach 11.85%, compared to the business-as-usual case.

ObjectivesThe study aimed at examining the combined association of socioeconomic status (SES) and diet diversity (DD) with health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and exploring whether DD played a mediating role in the relationship between varied SES and HRQoL among Chinese older persons.MethodA multi-stage random sampling method was conducted in Shanxi Province of China, with 3,250 older adults participating in this cross-sectional survey. SES was divided into groups by quartiles and DD by means, and these variable groups were combined in pairs to generate a total of eight combinations. The PROCESS macro developed by Hayes was employed for the simple mediation analysis.ResultsCompared with the reference group (those with both high SES and high DD), older adults who were classified to have lower SES or DD had elevated odds of having worse HRQoL: low SES/ low DD (OR = 1.65, 95% CI 1.41–2.92); low SES/ high DD (OR = 1.45, 95% CI 1.17–1.80); middle low SES/ low DD (OR = 1.43, 95% CI 1.24–1.65); middle low SES/ high DD (OR = 1.23, 95% CI 1.03–1.47); upper high SES/ low DD (OR = 1.41, 95% CI 1.21–1.65); and high SES/ low DD (OR = 1.30, 95%CI 1.10–1.53). The mediation analysis revealed that DD mediated the relationship between SES and HRQoL (B=0.011, 95% CI 0.008–0.013), with its indirect effects accounting for 39.29% of the total effects.ConclusionsThese findings highlighted the role of DD as a mediator of the relationship between SES and HRQoL. As DD could be protective, modifiable, and easy for older adults to understand and implement, village clinics and community health stations should work collaboratively to design proper DD intervention measures for better HRQoL.

A flexible thermal insulation system is proposed in this study, which considers the application and promotion of flexible composite materials in the field of marine engineering. This system is designed to provide a cost-effective and convenient thermal insulation solution for avoiding impurity precipitation and formation of wax plugs caused by extremely low temperature during mining, transportation, and storage of oil. The thermal insulation system includes two main parts: the insulation layer and the heating source. In accordance with the laws of thermodynamics and the primary characteristics of the flexible structure, two different insulation systems were designed and model tests were performed to compare performance in heating efficiency, thermal insulation, and temperature field distribution under identical environmental conditions. Compared with the plan 1 thermal insulation system, the plan 2 system has lower requirements for heating power, more uniform temperature field distribution inside the flexible structure, and a difference of only 7.18°C between the highest and lowest temperatures.

A flexible composite tank is developed for the storage of oil and gas. The tank is made of coated fabric, which is a thermoplastic polyurethane reinforced aramid fiber, to satisfy strength, sealing, and fluid compatibility requirements. The top and bottom areas of the tank are connected with a rod to fix the tank height during inflation. The tank deformation is studied. Experimental tests are conducted on two prototypes of 0.4 m height and a prototype of 1.7 m height in a water basin. The test for the small prototypes focuses on obtaining deformed shapes. The test for the 1.7-m height prototype focuses on obtaining strain sensor readings. The tank collapses initially from the bottom part, propagates upward, and then finally only the top part retains the initial shape when the tank is empty. The deformation process is also simulated using a finite element analysis (FEA) model. Results show that the deformation shape of the tank was simulated effectively compared with that in the experimental results. The FEA results are conservative compared with the test results, given that the tank deformation is irregular and the maximum strain was difficult to record during the test. This research provides insight into the deformation behavior of a flexible tank, and the validated FEA model can be used for future design optimization.

IntroductionIt has been approved that information sources would affect public behaviors. However, due to the outbreak of COVID-19, this influence was enhanced and showed a distinctive pattern among different populations, which has been less noticed before. We aimed to investigate the potential roles of different information sources in COVID-19 preventive behaviors of different publics.MethodsA cross-sectional online survey with 11,190 participants from 33 province-level regions in China was conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic. Sociodemographic characteristics, COVID-19 preventive behaviors, and information sources for COVID-19-related information were assessed. A mixed linear model was used to analyze risk factors of COVID-19 preventive behaviors. The effects of different information sources on COVID-19 prevention behaviors of different publics were analyzed.ResultsGenerally, the Chinese public had good COVID-19 preventive behaviors, and the top three COVID-19 preventive behaviors with the higher action rate were avoiding eat bushmeat (76.1%), a healthy diet (74.8%), and avoiding contact with people with symptoms of respiratory diseases (73.0%). About information sources, 12320 telephone (National Public Health Hotline) (−0.62, 95% CI: −0.94 to −0.31) and acquaintances consulting (−1.00, 95% CI: −1.31 to −0.69) were negatively associated with COVID-19 preventive behaviors, while internet resources, family doctors, hospitals, and community health centers were positively associated with COVID-19 preventive behaviors (1.00 vs. 0.47 vs. 0.46 vs. 0.33, P < 0.05). For older adults, accessing to COVID-19-related information through family doctors and community health centers were positively associated with COVID-19 preventive behaviors. For the non-educated, family doctors and community health centers had positive effects on their COVID-19 preventive behaviors. Family doctors and internet resources were positively associated with COVID-19 preventive behaviors among those earning 5,000 yuans and above. The effects of family doctors, hospitals, and internet resources were higher for COVID-19 preventive behaviors of urban publics than for rural publics. Finally, the effect of internet resources on COVID-19 preventive behaviors of females was lower than males.ConclusionsObtaining COVID-19-related information through internet resources had the most significant effect on COVID-19 preventive behaviors, but was not significant among publics with old age, low education, low income, and living in rural area.

BackgroundInappropriate use of glucocorticoids in primary care institutions is serious. It not only causes economic burden, but leads to many adverse reactions. The purpose of this study is to explore systemic glucocorticoid prescription pattern and factors of inappropriate use in primary care institutions.MethodsThis is a retrospective study. Systemic glucocorticoids prescribed in 58 primary care institutions in Guizhou province of Southwest China in 2020 were selected from the Health Information System. All prescriptions were classified as appropriate or inappropriate use. Inappropriate use was classified into the following two categories: (a) Inappropriate indications; (b) Inappropriate selection of glucocorticoids. Multivariate analysis was used to explore the factors associated with inappropriate use of systemic glucocorticoids.ResultsA total of 63,315 glucocorticoid prescriptions were included in the analysis. Diseases of the respiratory system (60.8%) and diseases of the skin and subcutaneous tissue (23.1%) were the most common indications for use. Injections (89.8%) predominated and dexamethasone (86.5%) was the most prescribed glucocorticoid. 68.2% of all prescriptions were inappropriate. Compared to physicians with a college degree, physicians with a junior college (OR: 1.12, 95% CI: 1.08–1.17) and technical secondary education (OR: 1.12, 95% CI:1.05–1.19) were more likely to prescribe glucocorticoids inappropriately as were attending physicians (OR: 1.12, 95% CI: 1.01–1.25) and resident physicians (OR: 1.31, 95% CI: 1.15–1.48) compared to associate chief physicians. The risk of inappropriate glucocorticoid use was highest in patients 65 years of age and older (OR: 6.00, 95% CI: 5.62–6.40). In contrast, prescriptions given by injection were more likely to be used inappropriately than those given orally (OR: 0.44, 95% CI: 0.41–0.46).ConclusionInappropriate use of systemic glucocorticoids without appropriate indications was extremely prominent in primary care institutions of Guizhou Province, especially in diseases of the respiratory system and among the elderly. The risk of inappropriate glucocorticoid use was highest in patients 65 years of age and older. It is important to note that physicians younger than 33, with more than 40 years of service, and attending or residents were more likely to inappropriately prescribe glucocorticoids.

ObjectiveTo determine the minimal clinically important differences (MCIDs) for the breast cancer scale QLICP-BR (V2.0) among the Quality of Life Instruments system for cancer patients (QLICP), which consist of the general module of 32 items classifying into 4 domains and the specific module of 10 items.MethodsAccording to the scoring rule of QLICP-BR (V2.0), the scores of each domain and the overall scale were calculated. The MCIDs of this scale were established by anchor-based and distribution-based methods. The anchor method used the Q29 item in the EORTC QLQ-C30 scale as anchors and defined the treatment effectiveness of the anchor-based method using criteria A (one level improvement after treatment) and B (at least one level improvement after treatment), while methods of effect size (ES), standard error of measurement (SEM), and reliability change index (RCI) were used in distribution-based methods.ResultsUsing the anchor-based method, according to standard A, the MCIDs of the physical domain (PHD), psychological domain (PSD), social domain (SOD), common symptoms and side effect domain (SSD), core/general module (CGD), specific domain (SPD), and the total score (TOT) were 16.24, 11.37, 11.31, 12.07, 11.49, 10.69, and 11.23 respectively; according to standard B, the MCIDs of PHD, PSD, SOD, SSD, CGD, SPD, and TOT were 18.88, 15.14, 14.10, 14.50, 13.93, 12.17, and 14.23 respectively. In the distribution-based MCID study, when ES = 0.8, the MCID values of each domain and the total score of the scale were 9.14, 10.34, 8.34, 10.54, 6.79, 9.73, and 6.96 respectively. The MCIDs calculated when a SEM of 1.96 was used as the intermediary index were 8.38, 11.04, 8.67, 10.00, 7.44, 9.83, and 7.81. The MCIDs calculated when a RCI of 1.96 was used as the intermediary index were 11.84, 15.61, 12.27, 14.14, 10.52, 13.90, and 11.05. Additionally, the MCID value calculated by the two standards of the anchor method was similar to 0.8 ES, 1.96 SEM, and 1.96 RCI.ConclusionUsing the anchor-based method, 0.8ES, 1.96SEM, and 1.96RCI have a better effect on the minimal clinically important difference of breast cancer scale and were recommended to be the preferred methods for establishing MCID.

Soybean is an important global crop for edible protein and oil, and plant height is a main breeding goal which is closely related to its plant shape and yield. In this research, a high-density genetic linkage map was constructed by 1996 SNP-bin markers on the basis of a recombinant inbred line population derived from Dongnong L13 × Henong 60. A total of 33 QTL related to plant height were identified, of which five were repeatedly detected in multiple environments. In addition, a 455-germplasm population with 63,306 SNP markers was used for multi-locus association analysis. A total of 62 plant height QTN were detected, of which 26 were detected repeatedly under multiple methods. Two candidate genes, Glyma.02G133000 and Glyma.05G240600, involving in plant height were predicted by pathway analysis in the regions identified by multiple environments and backgrounds, and validated by qRT-PCR. These results enriched the soybean plant height regulatory network and contributed to molecular selection-assisted breeding.
