Convergent plate boundaries show sharp variations in orogenic width and extent of intraplate deformation. Analysis of late Cenozoic contractile deformation along the Andean mountain front and adjacent foreland highlights the contrasting degrees of deformation advance toward the plate interior. The retroarc positions of the Andean topographic front (marked by frontal thrust-belt structures) and foreland deformation front (defined by isolated basement block uplifts) range from 300 to 900 km inboard of the trench axis. Over the ~8000 km arcuate length of the Andes (10°N to 55°S), four discrete maxima of inboard deformation advance are spatially co-located with the Peruvian (5°S--14°S) and Pampean (27°S--33°S) zones of flat slab subduction, the subducted Chile Ridge (45°S--48°S), and the anomalously thick Paleozoic stratigraphic wedge of Bolivia (17°S--23°S). The spatial correspondence of retroarc shortening with specific geodynamic configurations demonstrates the mechanical role of flat slab subduction, slab window development, and combined structural and stratigraphic geometries in shaping the orogenic architecture of Cordilleran margins, largely through lithospheric strengthening, weakening, and/or tectonic inheritance. The Mesoproterozoic Belt Basin of the northwestern United States and southwestern Canada contains a 5-20-km-thick metasedimentary succession deposited during an important transition in the Precambrian development of North America. Key unresolved issues for the Belt Basin include the chronology of deposition, sources of siliciclastic sediment, and regional paleogeography during Laurentian orogenesis. To address these topics, we acquired detrital zircon U-Pb geochronologic data for eastern exposures of the Belt-Purcell Supergroup in the Lewis thrust salient along the USA-Canada border. To define an integrated chronostratigraphic and provenance framework for the Belt Basin, we calculated maximum depositional ages and qualitatively and quantitatively compared our geochronologic data set to a compilation of Laurentian igneous and metamorphic zircon U-Pb ages using multidimensional scaling and an inverse Monte Carlo model. The results suggest a stratigraphic age range of ca. 1495-1380 Ma, constituting a depositional duration of ~115 m.y. with an average sediment accumulation rate of ~40 m/m.y. for the studied locality (extrapolated to ~155 m/m.y. for the basin depocenter). Variations in sediment provenance are expressed by three distinct intervals within the Belt-Purcell Supergroup. The lower Belt Supergroup succession (Waterton to lower Helena Formations; ca. 1495-1440 Ma) is dominated by Paleoproterozoic and Archean grains derived from the northeastern Canadian Shield. The middle Belt Supergroup succession (upper Helena to Sheppard Formations; ca. 1440-1420 Ma) displays mixed early Mesoproterozoic, late Paleoproterozoic, and Archean zircon age groups. The upper Belt Supergroup succession (Gateway to Roosville Formations; ca. 1420-1380 Ma) contains almost entirely late Paleoproterozoic zircons sourced from the south (Yavapai-Mazatzal and Mojave crustal provinces). We interpret sediment provenance to reflect a continental-scale, fluvial drainage reorganization during middle Belt Supergroup deposition that can be linked to the recently recognized Picuris orogeny. North-trending rifts and associated strike-slip faults in the Tibetan Plateau suggest Cenozoic east-west extension, but the dominant modes of distributed extensional deformation and basin formation are unclear. The Lunggar basin in west-central Tibet is bounded by a <40° low-angle detachment fault, contains active high-angle normal faults, and displays elevated topography toward the central segment of the basin with axial fluvial drainage toward the northern and southern basin terminations. Structural and stratigraphic features are consistent with a high-angle extensional system that evolved into a low-angle fault and supradetachment basin during progressive extension. This study seeks to constrain the depositional and exhumational history of the Lunggar basin and bounding fault system by assessing the sedimentologic, structural, and thermochronologic record of basin fill. Upper Cenozoic facies include alluvial-fan conglomerates and fluviolacustrine sandstones and siltstones. Sandstone petrographic data, conglomerate clast compositions, and detrital zircon U-Pb ages indicate systematic unroofing of the western footwall (including Jurassic-Cretaceous and Miocene granites that intruded Permian-Cretaceous strata). Paleocurrents are orthogonal or opposite to the current dispersal pattern, suggesting that growth of a modern intrabasin high in the central segment of the basin has modified the original basin configuration. As a proxy for footwall cooling histories, four basin-fill sandstones and 11 leucogranite boulders from proximal hanging-wall strata were sampled for low-temperature thermochronometry. Apatite and zircon (U-Th)/He results suggest that extension was underway by 10-8 Ma, with late Miocene-Pliocene exhumation rates of roughly 1 km/Myr. This rapid exhumation generated a conglomeratic unroofing sequence and promoted hanging-wall rebound and erosional recycling of range-front basin fill along the central segment of the detachment fault. The collective results support a model of rift evolution that invokes upper-crustal thinning, supra detachment basin subsidence, and subsequent isostatic rebound along the more-evolved central segments of Tibetan extensional systems. Laramide basement blocks of the U.S. Rocky Mountain Province have long been considered the sediment source of the Paleocene-Eocene Wilcox Group, implying that large-scale progradation driven by Laramide uplift induced a transition from carbonate to clastic deposition in the Gulf of Mexico. Detrital zircon U-Pb age spectra from 10 samples collected from the Wilcox Group in south Texas reveal a complex grain assemblage with major age populations at ca. 1800-1300 Ma and 350-50 Ma and minor populations at 1300-950 Ma, 3250-1850 Ma, and 900-400 Ma. Modal data for Wilcox Group sand grain populations from the same region suggest a diverse provenance, including sources from the Cordilleran magmatic arc and subordinate reworked sedimentary rocks. Sediment was primarily derived from a mix of crystalline basement blocks in the U.S. southern Rocky Mountains and northern Mexico, the Cordilleran arc of western Mexico and the southwestern United States, and Mesozoic-Paleogene magmatic rocks of northern Mexico. Secondary sources include recycled strata from Sevier-Laramide basins in the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. Comparisons of detrital zircon U-Pb age spectra show that the Lower Wilcox subunit contains significant magmatic arc-derived sediment, whereas the Upper Wilcox subunit is more enriched in basement and recycled sedimentary detritus. Therefore, the relatively quartzose composition of the bulk detrital assemblages throughout the Wilcox Group of south Texas is not an accurate reflection of the range of volcanic and basement sources indicated by the associated U-Pb ages, suggesting significant attrition of unstable grains during long-distance (>500-1000 km) transport. Sedimentological, provenance, and detrital thermochronological results for basin fill at the modern deformation front of the northern Andes (6°N latitude) provide a long-term, Eocene to Pliocene record of foreland-basin sedimentation along the Eastern Cordillera-Llanos basin boundary in Colombia. Lithofacies assemblages and paleocurrent orientations in the upward-coarsening, ~5-km-thick succession of the Nunchía syncline reveal a systematic shift from craton-derived, shallow-marine distal foreland (back-bulge) accumulation in the Mirador Formation, to orogen-sourced, deltaic, and coastal-influenced sedimentation of the distal to medial foreland (foredeep) in the Carbonera and León Formations, to anastomosing fluvial and distributive braided fluvial megafan systems of the proximal foreland (foredeep to wedge-top) basin in the lower and upper Guayabo Formation. These changes in depositional processes and sediment dispersal are supported by up-section variations in detrital zircon U-Pb and (U-Th)/He ages that record exhumation of evolving, compartmentalized sediment source areas in the Eastern Cordillera. The data are interpreted in terms of a progressive eastward advance in fold-and-thrust deformation, with late Eocene-Oligocene deformation in the axial zone of the Eastern Cordillera along the western edge of Floresta basin (Soapaga thrust), early Miocene reactivation (inversion) of the eastern margin of the Mesozoic rift system (Pajarito and Guaicaramo thrusts), and middle-late Miocene propagation of a footwall shortcut fault (Yopal thrust) that created the Nunchía syncline in a wedge-top (piggyback) setting of the eastern foothills along the transition from the Eastern Cordillera to Llanos foreland basin. Collectively, the data presented here for the frontal Eastern Cordillera define a general in-sequence pattern of eastward-advancing fold-and-thrust deformation during Cenozoic east-west shortening in the Colombian Andes. The shortening history of the Andes is important for understanding retroarc deformation along convergent margins and forcing mechanisms of Cenozoic climate. However, the timing of uplift in the northern Andes is poorly constrained, with estimates ranging from Cretaceous to Pliocene. Detrital zircon U-Pb ages from the Middle Magdalena Valley Basin in Colombia reveal two provenance shifts during Cenozoic time. The fi rst shift occurs between early and late Paleocene strata, where U-Pb results show a switch from Proterozoic-dominated to Phanerozoic-dominated age spectra. We attribute this change to uplift-related exhumation of the Central Cordillera. The second shift occurs between middle-late Eocene and late Oligocene strata, where increased Grenville ages and diminished Mesozoic ages can be linked to uplift of the Eastern Cordillera. Our results show that signifi cant pre-Neogene deformation affected the northern Andes, underscoring the potential importance of Andean uplift on the dynamics of Paleogene climate. Lag time is the difference between the closure age of a thermochronologic system and the depositional age of host strata. Lag-time analysis of sedimentary basin fill provides insight into the exhumation history of adjacent eroded orogens. In a case study of the Paleogene Floresta basin in the Eastern Cordillera fold-thrust belt of Colombia, variations in lag time reflect changes in both sediment source areas and exhumation patterns. However, near-zero lag times can be produced by either syndepositional volcanism or rapid exhumation. We applied U-Pb geochronology and (U-Th)/He (ZHe) thermochronology to individual zircon grains and identified zircons of volcanic origin as those for which the U-Pb age is within the 2δ uncertainty of their ZHe age. Consistent discrimination of young ZHe ages as the products of either rapid exhumation or volcanism reveals three stages in the history of the northern Andean hinterland. (1) Early to late Paleocene: The appearance of syndepositional and Mesozoic volcanic zircons marks the initial influx of magmatic arc detritus. (2) Middle to late Eocene: Near-zero lag times point to rapid, regionally extensive exhumation attributable to thrust-induced uplift of the Magdalena Valley basement. (3) Late Eocene to late Oligocene: Increased lag time is interpreted as recycling of shallowly buried foreland-basin strata possibly due to movement on basinbounding thrust systems. The presence of volcanic zircons with ZHe ages younger than or indistinguishable from the youngest exhumationally cooled zircons underscores the need for double dating to reliably identify volcanic influence in detrital thermochronology datasets. Present-day seafloor morphology and sediment distribution in the deep-water Surveyor Fan, Gulf of Alaska, is dominated by the >700-km-long Surveyor Channel, an anomaly in a system with no major fluvial input or shelf canyons. The sediment supply instead has been provided by glacial erosion in the still active Chugach-St. Elias orogen, and glacial transport across the shelf. Glaciation has periodically increased in the St. Elias Range since the Miocene, but began dominating erosion and spurred enhanced exhumation since the mid-Pleistocene transition, at ∼1 Ma. Ice associated with this glacial intensification carved cross-shelf sea valleys that connect the St. Elias Range to the Surveyor Fan. The direct deposition of newly increased terrigenous sediment flux into the fan triggered the formation of the Surveyor Channel and its growth across the Surveyor Fan. Through the formation of the Surveyor Channel, climate events created three major differentiable sequences across the Surveyor Fan that we mapped using seismicreflection profiles. The change in morphology observed throughout the sequences allows us to characterize the influence that a glaciated orogen can have in shaping margin processes and the sediment pathway from source to sink. We show that the large variation in sediment flux between glacial- interglacial cycles together with sea valley formation leads to a glacial shelf transport process not typical of a fluvial system. This glacial shelf transport along with the channel terminus in the Aleutian Trench makes the Surveyor Fan and Channel morphologically one of the most unique systems in the world. The growth and deformation history of the Qilian-Nan Shan thrust belt bounding the NE Qaidam Basin figures importantly in testing models of Tibetan Plateau uplift during the India-Asia collision. However, debate exists about the onset of uplift and exhumation of the Qilian-Nan Shan, with timing estimates ranging from early Paleocene to late Miocene. Here we report integrated analyses of magnetostratigraphy, anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility, sediment provenance, and paleoclimate (using environmental magnetic parameters) for Cenozoic fluviolacustrine strata from the Dahonggou section south of the Qilian-Nan Shan. The results are interpreted to demonstrate an early Miocene (ca. 20 Ma) onset of sediment accumulation in this location, with clastic sediment derived initially from the southern Qimen Tagh highland. The sediment source then switched to the northern part of the Qilian Shan region after ca. 18.5 Ma, consistent with initial uplift and exhumation of the Qilian Shan. Thereafter, two additional provenance shifts reveal progressive southward propagation of deformation in the Qilian-Nan Shan. As a result of this southward growth of Qilian-Nan Shan topography, precipitation increased after ca. 11 Ma at the study site due to orographic interception of moisture from the south. This work improves our understanding of the depositional age, sediment provenance, and paleoclimate history of the Qaidam Basin and reveals a prolonged history of Qilian-Nan Shan deformation and uplift, which may have accelerated during the late Miocene. Low-temperature thermochronometry and crosscutting relationships identified in newly released reflection seismic data reveal a previously unrecognized zone of early Andean shortening in Colombia. Apatite fission-track data and thermal modeling help define a 60-50 Ma onset of rapid exhumation along the present boundary between the Magdalena Valley hinterland basin and Eastern Cordillera thrust belt. Subsurface angular unconformities localized above fold-thrust structures indicate Paleogene deposition in a wedge-top depozone containing doubly vergent reverse faults. Retrodeformation of a cross section based on interpreted seismic profiles and thermochronometric data indicates Paleocene to Early Eocene shortening and exhumation occurred through simultaneous activation of east- and westdirected reverse faults across a broad orogenic front. Subsequent deformation focused along west-directed inversion structures. These relationships reveal that deformation operated in a disparate manner, rather than following a systematic progression from hinterland to foreland.
