In this paper, a previously developed modification of the Sines model of multiaxial fatigue is reduced to an invariant form. Model constants were determined for different sets of setup experiments. It was supposed to introduce an additional summand to account for the phase shift between loading modes. The model is used to describe the fatigue behavior of the 2024 aluminum alloy. Low-cycle fatigue tests under biaxial loading conditions are presented, with one mode changing cyclically and the other mode remaining constant in magnitude throughout the test. This research is based on the study of the fatigue behavior of an aluminum alloy plate with a central crack. The plate is subjected to a tensile loading on its lower and upper parts. Several parameters were highlighted, such as the loading effect with a load ratio R = 0. The effects of the load ratio on both the repaired and not repaired plates, by two composite patches, which are boron/epoxy and graphite/epoxy, were investigated, as well as the effect of the plate material on plate life, comparing different materials. Three-point bending fatigue test of 5083 and 5A06 aluminum alloy T-welded joints is carried out, and the fatigue life of the specimens with different influencing factors are obtained. Finite element model of the Twelded joint is established and the nodal force based structural stress is calculated. Neighborhood rough set theory is used for analysis of the factors which influence the fatigue life of the aluminum alloy welded joints. Key influencing factors are studied and the fatigue characteristic domains are determined. The master S-N curve characterized by the nodal force based structural stress range and cycles to failure on bi-logarithmic coordinate as well as S-N curves corresponding to the fatigue characteristic domain are fitted. A case study of fatigue life prediction of 5A06 aluminum alloy welded joint indicates the effectiveness of the fatigue life prediction method based on the fatigue characteristic domain. The paper presents the results of tests on the fatigue crack growth for a constant moment amplitude under combined bending with torsion in the aluminium alloy AW-2017A-T4. The tests were performed under different values of the load ratio R. Plane specimens with stress concentrators in form of the external one-sided sharp notch were tested. A non-uniform fatigue cracks growth on both lateral surfaces of specimens was observed during experimental tests. Fatigue cracks were developing in the specimens in two stages; quarter-elliptic edge cracks were observed at the beginning, then evolving into through cracks. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study compares both uniaxial and multiaxial variable amplitude experimental crack growth data for naturally initiated fatigue cracks in tubular specimens of 2024-T3 aluminum alloy to predictions based on two state-of-the-art analysis codes: UniGrow and FASTRAN. For variable amplitude fatigue tests performed under pure axial nominal loading conditions, both UniGrow and FASTRAN analyses were found to produce mostly conservative growth life predictions, despite good agreement with constant amplitude crack growth data. For variable amplitude torsion and combined axial-torsion crack growth analyses, however, the conservatism in growth life predictions was found to reduce. This was attributed to multiaxial nominal stress state effects, such as T-stress and mixed-mode crack growth, which are not accounted for in either UniGrow or FASTRAN, but were found in constant amplitude fatigue tests to increase experimental crack growth rates. Fatigue fracture surfaces of Al-based alloys with fatigue striations pattern and such wear debris pattern as spherical particles were investigated fractographically, on the bases of the OG'e spectroscopic analysis. The sequence of events during fatigue crack edges opening was discovered when the elliptical or spherical shapes of wear debris build up on the fracture surface in crosspieces between mesotunnels under mode III of mode I fatigue crack opening because of volume rotation.
