Search

Powerful radio sources associated with super-massive black holes are among the most luminous objects in the Universe, and are frequently recognized both as cosmological probes and active constituents in the evolution of galaxies. We present alignments between radio jets and cold molecular gas in the environment of distant radio galaxies, and show that the brightness of the radio synchrotron source can be enhanced by its interplay with the molecular gas. Our work is based on CO J>1 observations with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) of three radio galaxies with redshifts in the range 1.4 < z < 2.1, namely MRC 0114-211 (z = 1.41), MRC 0156-252 (z = 2.02), and MRC 2048-272 (z = 2.05). These ALMA observations support previous work that found molecular gas out to 50 kpc in the circumgalactic environment, based on a CO(1-0) survey performed with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA). The CO emission is found along the radio axes but beyond the main radio lobes. When compared to a large sample of high-z radio galaxies from the literature, we find that the presence of this cold molecular medium correlates with an increased flux-density ratio of the main vs. counter lobe. This suggest that the radio lobe brightens when encountering cold molecular gas in the environment. While part of the molecular gas is likely related to the interstellar medium (ISM) from either the host or a companion galaxy, a significant fraction of the molecular gas in these systems shows very low excitation, with r$_{2-1/1-0}$ and r$_{3-2/1-0}$ values $\lesssim$0.2. With its capacity to observe $\sim 10^{5-6}$ faint active galactic nuclei (AGN) out to redshift $z\approx 6$, Roman is poised to reveal a population of $10^{4-6}\, {\rm M_\odot}$ black holes during an epoch of vigorous galaxy assembly. By measuring the light curves of a subset of these AGN and looking for periodicity, Roman can identify several hundred massive black hole binaries (MBHBs) with 5-12 day orbital periods, which emit copious gravitational radiation and will inevitably merge on timescales of $10^{3-5}$ years. During the last few months of their merger, such binaries are observable with the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA), a joint ESA/NASA gravitational wave mission set to launch in the mid-2030s. We investigate the imprints of accretion and dynamical friction on the gravitational-wave signals emitted by binary black holes embedded in a scalar dark matter cloud. As a key feature in this work, we focus on scalar fields with a repulsive self-interaction that balances against the self-gravity of the cloud. To a first approximation, the phase of the gravitational-wave signal receives extra correction terms at $-4$PN and $-5.5$PN orders, relative to the prediction of vacuum general relativity, due to accretion and dynamical friction, respectively. Future observations by LISA and B-DECIGO have the potential to detect these effects for a large range of scalar masses~$m_\mathrm{DM}$ and self-interaction couplings~$\lambda_4$; observations by ET and Advanced~LIGO could also detect these effects, albeit in a more limited region of parameter space. Crucially, we find that even if a dark matter cloud has a bulk density~$\rho_0$ that is too dilute to be detected via the effects of dynamical friction, the imprints of accretion could still be observable because it is controlled by the independent scale $\rho_a = 4 m_{\rm DM}^4 c^3/(3 \lambda_4 \hbar^3)$. Despite being one of the best-known galaxies, the distance to the Whirlpool Galaxy, M 51, is still debated. Current estimates range from 6.02 to 9.09 Mpc, and different methods yield discrepant results. No Cepheid distance has been published for M 51 to date. We aim to estimate a more reliable distance to M 51 through two independent methods: Cepheid variables and their period-luminosity relation, and an augmented version of the expanding photosphere method (EPM) on the Type IIP SN 2005cs. For the Cepheid variables, we analyse a recently published HST catalogue of stars in M 51. By applying light curve and colour-magnitude diagram-based filtering, we select a high-quality sample of M 51 Cepheids to estimate the distance through the period-luminosity relation. For SN 2005cs, an emulator-based spectral fitting technique is applied, which allows for the fast and reliable estimation of physical parameters of the supernova atmosphere. We augment the established framework of EPM with these spectral models to obtain a precise distance to M 51. The two resulting distance estimates are D_Cep = 7.59 +/- 0.30 Mpc and D_2005cs = 7.34 +/- 0.39 Mpc using the Cepheid period-luminosity relation and the spectral modelling of SN 2005cs respectively. This is the first published Cepheid distance for this galaxy. Given that these two estimates are completely independent, one may combine them, which yields D_M51 = 7.50 +/- 0.24 Mpc (3.2% uncertainty). Our distance estimates are in agreement with most of the results obtained previously for M 51, while being more precise than the earlier counterparts. They are however significantly lower than the TRGB estimates, which are often adopted for the distance to this galaxy. We report on a detailed abundance study of six bright, mostly southern, slowly rotating late B stars: HD~1279 (B8III), HD~99803 (B9V), HD~123445 (B9V), HD~147550 (B9V), HD~171961 (B8III) and HD~202671 (B5II/III), hitherto reported as normal stars. We compare them to the two classical HgMn stars $\mu$ Lep and $\beta$ Scl and to the superficially normal star, $\nu$ Cap. In the spectra of the six stars, the \ion{Hg}{2} line at 3984 \AA\ line is clearly seen and numerous lines of P, Ti, Mn, Fe, Ga, Sr, Y, and Zr appear to be strong absorbers. A comparison of newly acquired and archival spectra of these objects with a grid of synthetic spectra for selected unblended lines reveals large overabundances of P, Ti, Cr, Mn, Sr, Y, Zr, Ba, Pt and Hg and underabundances of He, Mg, Sc and Ni. The effective temperatures, surface gravities, low projected rotational velocities and the peculiar abundance patterns of the six investigated stars show that they are new chemically peculiar stars, mostly new HgMn stars, and are reclassified as such. The evolutionary status of these stars has been inferred and their ages and masses estimated. The two most massive objects, HD~1279 and HD~202671, might have evolved away from the main-sequence recently, the other stars are main-sequence objects. We analyze the Near Infrared ($\sim0.8-1\mu$m) rest-frame morphologies of galaxies with $\log M_*/M_\odot>9$ in the redshift range $010.5$) at $z\sim5$, and bulge-dominated galaxies also exist at these early epochs, confirming a rich and evolved morphological diversity of galaxies $\sim1$ Gyr after the Big Bang. Finally, we find that the morphology-quenching relation is already in place for massive galaxies at $z>3$, with massive quiescent galaxies ($\log M_*/M_\odot>10.5$) being predominantly bulge-dominated., Comment: Submitted to A&A, comments welcome

A population of massive galaxies invisible or very faint in deep optical/near-infrared surveys, but brighter at longer wavelengths has been uncovered in the past years. However, the nature of these optically dark/faint galaxies (OFGs, among other nomenclatures) is highly uncertain. In this work, we investigate the drivers of dust attenuation in the JWST era. Particularly, we study the role of stellar mass, size, and orientation in obscuring star-forming galaxies (SFGs) at $3 < z < 7.5$, focusing on understanding why galaxies like OFGs are so faint at optical/near-infrared wavelengths. We find that stellar mass is the primary proxy of dust attenuation among those studied. Effective radius and axis ratio do not show a clear link with dust attenuation, with the effect of orientation close to random. However, there is a subset of highly dust attenuated ($A_V > 1$, typically) SFGs, of which OFGs are a specific case. For this subset, we find that the key distinctive feature is their compact size (for massive systems with $\log (M_{*}/M_{\odot}) > 10$), exhibiting 30% smaller effective radius than the average SFGs at the same stellar mass and redshift. On the contrary, they do not exhibit a preference for low axis ratios (i.e., edge-on disks). We present the final data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Reverberation Mapping (SDSS-RM) project, a precursor to the SDSS-V Black Hole Mapper Reverberation Mapping program. This data set includes 11-year photometric and 7-year spectroscopic light curves for 849 broad-line quasars over a redshift range of 0.1=0.62+-0.07 for the line dispersion measured from the RMS spectrum. The intrinsic scatter of individual virial factors is 0.31+-0.07 dex, indicating a factor of two systematic uncertainty in RM black hole masses. Our lag measurements reveal significant R-L relations for Hbeta and MgII at high redshift, consistent with the latest measurements based on heterogeneous samples. While we are unable to robustly constrain the slope of the R-L relation for CIV given the limited dynamical range in luminosity, we found substantially larger scatter in CIV lags at fixed L1350. Using the SDSS-RM lag sample, we derive improved single-epoch (SE) mass recipes for Hbeta, MgII and CIV, which are consistent with their respective RM masses as well as between the SE recipes from two different lines, over the luminosity range probed by our sample. The new Hbeta and MgII recipes are approximately unbiased estimators at given RM masses, but there are systematic biases in the CIV recipe. The intrinsic scatter of SE masses around RM masses is ~0.45 dex for Hbeta and MgII, increasing to ~0.58 dex for CIV., Comment: 33 pages. We report on our study of SN 2022xxf during the first four months of its evolution. The light curves (LCs) display two humps at similar maximum brightness separated by 75d, unprecedented for a broad-lined Type Ic supernova (SN IcBL). SN~2022xxf is the most nearby SN IcBL to date (in NGC~3705, $z = 0.0037$, 20 Mpc). Optical and NIR photometry and spectroscopy are used to identify the energy source powering the LC. Nearly 50 epochs of high S/N-ratio spectroscopy were obtained within 130d, comprising an unparalleled dataset for a SN IcBL, and one of the best-sampled SN datasets to date. The global spectral appearance and evolution of SN~2022xxf points to typical SN Ic/IcBL, with broad features (up to $\sim14000$ km~s$^{-1}$) and a gradual transition from the photospheric to the nebular phase. However, narrow emission lines (corresponding to $\sim1000-2500$ km~s$^{-1}$) are present from the time of the second rise, suggesting slower-moving circumstellar material (CSM). These lines are subtle, but some are readily noticeable at late times such as in Mg~I $\lambda$5170 and [O~I] $\lambda$5577. Unusually, the near-infrared spectra show narrow line peaks, especially among features formed by ions of O and Mg. We infer the presence of CSM that is free of H and He. We propose that the radiative energy from the ejecta-CSM interaction is a plausible explanation for the second LC hump. This interaction scenario is supported by the color evolution, which progresses to the blue as the light curve evolves along the second hump, and the slow second rise and subsequent rapid LC drop. SN~2022xxf may be related to an emerging number of CSM-interacting SNe Ic, which show slow, peculiar LCs, blue colors, and subtle CSM interaction lines. The progenitor stars of these SNe likely experienced an episode of mass loss shortly prior to explosion consisting of H/He-free material., Comment: Submitted. We present Lyman continuum (LyC) radiation escape fraction $f_{\rm{esc}}$ measurements for 183 spectroscopically confirmed star-forming galaxies in the redshift range $3.11 < z < 3.53$ in the \textit{Chandra} Deep Field South. We use ground-based imaging to measure $f_{\rm{esc}}$, and use ground- and space-based photometry to derive galaxy physical properties using spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting. We additionally derive [O III]+H$��$ equivalent widths (that fall in the observed K band) by including nebular emission in the SED fitting. After removing foreground contaminants, we report the discovery of 11 new candidate LyC leakers, with absolute LyC escape fractions, $f_{\rm{esc}}$ in the range $0.14-0.85$. From non-detections, we place $1��$ upper limits of $f_{\rm{esc}}300$A. For candidate LyC leakers, we find a weak negative correlation between $f_{\rm{esc}}$ and galaxy stellar masses, no correlation between $f_{\rm{esc}}$ specific star-formation rates (sSFRs) and a positive correlation between $f_{\rm{esc}}$ and EW$_0$([O III]+H$��$). The weak/no correlations between stellar mass and sSFRs may be explained by misaligned viewing angles and/or non-coincident timescales of starburst activity and periods of high $f_{\rm{esc}}$. Alternatively, escaping radiation may predominantly occur in highly localised star-forming regions, or $f_{\rm{esc}}$ measurements may be impacted by stochasticity of the intervening neutral medium, obscuring any global trends with galaxy properties. We present a novel approach for the dimensionality reduction of galaxy images by leveraging a combination of variational auto-encoders (VAE) and domain adaptation (DA). We demonstrate the effectiveness of this approach using a sample of low redshift galaxies with detailed morphological type labels from the Galaxy-Zoo DECaLS project. We show that 40-dimensional latent variables can effectively reproduce most morphological features in galaxy images. To further validate the effectiveness of our approach, we utilised a classical random forest (RF) classifier on the 40-dimensional latent variables to make detailed morphology feature classifications. This approach performs similarly to a direct neural network application on galaxy images. We further enhance our model by tuning the VAE network via DA using galaxies in the overlapping footprint of DECaLS and BASS+MzLS, enabling the unbiased application of our model to galaxy images in both surveys. We observed that noise suppression during DA led to even better morphological feature extraction and classification performance. Overall, this combination of VAE and DA can be applied to achieve image dimensionality reduction, defect image identification, and morphology classification in large optical surveys., 10 pages, 8 figures

We describe the target selection and characteristics of the DESI Peculiar Velocity Survey, the largest survey of peculiar velocities (PVs) using both the fundamental plane (FP) of galaxies and the Tully-Fisher (TF) relationship planned to date. We detail how we identify suitable early-type galaxies for the FP and suitable late-type galaxies for the TF relation using the photometric data provided by the DESI Legacy Imaging Survey DR9. Subsequently, we provide targets for 373 533 early-type galaxies and 118 637 late-type galaxies within the DESI 5-year footprint. We validate these photometric selections using existing morphological classifications. Furthermore, we demonstrate using survey validation data that DESI is able to measure the spectroscopic properties to sufficient precision to obtain PVs for our targets. Based on realistic DESI fiber assignment simulations and spectroscopic success rates, we predict the final DESI Peculiar Velocity Survey will obtain $\sim$133 000 FP-based and $\sim$53 000 TF-based PV measurements over an area of 14 000 $\mathrm{deg^{2}}$. Each of these components will be a factor of 4--5 larger than other recent samples. We forecast the ability of using these data to measure the clustering of galaxy positions and peculiar velocities from the combined DESI PV and Bright Galaxy Surveys (BGS), which allows for cancellation of cosmic variance at low redshifts. With these forecasts, we anticipate a $4\%$ statistical measurement on the growth rate of structure at $z, 20 pages, 15 figures, 14 tables; submitted to MNRAS

The direct detection of core-collapse supernova (SN) progenitor stars is a powerful way of probing the last stages of stellar evolution. However, detections in archival Hubble Space Telescope images are limited to about one per year. Here, we explore whether we can increase the detection rate by using data from ground-based wide-field surveys. Due to crowding and atmospheric blurring, progenitor stars can typically not be identified in pre-explosion images alone. Instead, we combine many pre-SN and late-time images to search for the disappearance of the progenitor star. As a proof of concept, we implement our search for ZTF data. For a few hundred images, we achieve limiting magnitudes of about 23 mag in the g and r band. However, no progenitor stars or long-lived outbursts are detected for 29 SNe within z, Submitted to ApJ. Galaxies show different halo scaling relations such as the Radial Acceleration Relation, the Mass Discrepancy Acceleration Relation (MDAR) or the dark matter Surface Density Relation (SDR). At difference with traditional studies using phenomenological $\Lambda$CDM halos, we analyze the above relations assuming that dark matter (DM) halos are formed through a Maximum Entropy Principle (MEP) in which the fermionic (quantum) nature of the DM particles is dully accounted for. For the first time a competitive DM model based on first physical principles, such as (quantum) statistical-mechanics and thermodynamics, is tested against a large data-set of galactic observables. In particular, we compare the fermionic DM model with empirical DM profiles: the NFW model, a generalized NFW model accounting for baryonic feedback, the Einasto model and the Burkert model. For this task, we use a large sample of 120 galaxies taken from the Spitzer Photometry and Accurate Rotation Curves (SPARC) data-set, from which we infer the DM content to compare with the models. We find that the Radial Acceleration Relation and MDAR are well explained by all the models with comparable accuracy, while the fits to the individual rotation curves, in contrast, show that cored DM halos are statistically preferred with respect to the cuspy NFW profile. However, very different physical principles justify the flat inner halo slope in the most favored DM profiles: while generalized NFW or Einasto models rely on complex baryonic feedback processes, the MEP scenario involves a quasi-thermodynamic equilibrium of the DM particles., Comment: 20 pages, 12 figures. The distribution of mass in galaxy-scale strong gravitational lenses is often modelled as an elliptical power law plus `external shear', which notionally accounts for neighbouring galaxies and cosmic shear. We show that it does not. Except in a handful of rare systems, the best-fit values of external shear do not correlate with independent measurements of shear: from weak lensing in 45 Hubble Space Telescope images, or in 50 mock images of lenses with complex distributions of mass. Instead, the best-fit shear is aligned with the major or minor axis of 88% of lens galaxies; and the amplitude of the external shear increases if that galaxy is disky. We conclude that `external shear' attached to a power law model is not physically meaningful, but a fudge to compensate for lack of model complexity. Since it biases other model parameters that are interpreted as physically meaningful in several science analyses (e.g. measuring galaxy evolution, dark matter physics or cosmological parameters), we recommend that future studies of galaxy-scale strong lensing should employ more flexible mass models., Comment: 13 pages, 11 figures, submitted to MNRAS

Context. Deep spectroscopic surveys with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) have revealed that some of the brightest infrared sources in the sky correspond to concentrations of dusty star-forming galaxies (DSFG) at high redshift. Among these, the SPT2349-56 protocluster system at z = 4.304 is amongst the most extreme examples due to its high source density and integrated star formation rate. Aims. We conducted a deep Lyman-$\alpha$ line emission survey around SPT2349-56 using the Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) at Very Large Telescope (VLT) in order to characterize this uniquely dense environment. Methods. Taking advantage of the deep three-dimensional nature of this survey, we performed a sensitive search for Lyman-$\alpha$ emitters (LAEs) toward the core and northern extension of the protocluster, which correspond to the brightest infrared regions in this field. Using a smoothed narrowband image extracted from the MUSE datacube around the protocluster redshift, we searched for possible extended structures. Results. We identify only three LAEs at z = 4.3 in this field, in concordance with expectations for blank-fields, and an extended Lyman-$\alpha$ structure spatially associated with core of the protocluster. All the previously-identified DSFGs in this field are undetected in Lyman-$\alpha$ emission, consistent with the conspicuous dust obscuration in these systems. We find an extended Lyman-$\alpha$ structure, about $60 \times 60$ kpc$^{2}$ in size, and located 56 kpc west of the protocluster core. Three DSFGs coincide spatially with the location of this structure. We conclude that either the three co-spatial DSFGs or the protocluster core itself are feeding ionizing photons to the Lyman-$\alpha$ structure., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures, 2 tables, submitted to A&A

We introduce the DESI LOW-Z Secondary Target Survey, which combines the wide-area capabilities of the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) with an efficient, low-redshift target selection method. Our selection consists of a set of color and surface brightness cuts, combined with modern machine learning methods, to target low-redshift dwarf galaxies ($z$ < 0.03) between $19 < r < 21$ with high completeness. We employ a convolutional neural network (CNN) to select high-priority targets. The LOW-Z survey has already obtained over 22,000 redshifts of dwarf galaxies (M$_* < 10^9$ M$_\odot$), comparable to the number of dwarf galaxies discovered in SDSS-DR8 and GAMA. As a spare fiber survey, LOW-Z currently receives fiber allocation for just ~50% of its targets. However, we estimate that our selection is highly complete: for galaxies at $z < 0.03$ within our magnitude limits, we achieve better than 95% completeness with ~1% efficiency using catalog-level photometric cuts. Lyman Break Galaxy (LBG) candidates at z>10 are rapidly being identified in JWST/NIRCam observations. Due to the (redshifted) break produced by neutral hydrogen absorption of rest-frame UV photons, these sources are expected to drop out in the bluer filters while being well detected in redder filters. However, here we show that dust-enshrouded star-forming galaxies at lower redshifts (z10 LBGs, representing potential contaminants in LBG candidate samples. First, we analyze CEERS-DSFG-1, a NIRCam dropout undetected in the F115W and F150W filters but detected at longer wavelengths. Combining the JWST data with (sub)millimeter constraints, including deep NOEMA interferometric observations, we show that this source is a dusty star-forming galaxy (DSFG) at z~5.1. We also present a tentative 2.6sigma SCUBA-2 detection at 850um around a recently identified z~16 LBG candidate in the same field and show that, if the emission is real and associated with this candidate, the available photometry is consistent with a z~5 dusty galaxy with strong nebular emission lines despite its blue near-IR colors. Further observations on this candidate are imperative to mitigate the low confidence of this tentative submillimeter emission and its positional uncertainty. Our analysis shows that robust (sub)millimeter detections of NIRCam dropout galaxies likely imply z=4-6 redshift solutions, where the observed near-IR break would be the result of a strong rest-frame optical Balmer break combined with high dust attenuation and strong nebular line emission, rather than the rest-frame UV Lyman break. An unprecedented array of new observational capabilities are starting to yield key constraints on models of the epoch of first light in the Universe. In this Letter we discuss the implications of the UV radiation background at cosmic dawn inferred by recent JWST observations for radio experiments aimed at detecting the redshifted 21-cm hyperfine transition of diffuse neutral hydrogen. Under the basic assumption that the 21-cm signal is activated by the Ly$\alpha$ photon field produced by metal-poor stellar systems, we show that a detection at the low frequencies of the EDGES experiment may be expected from a simple extrapolation of the declining UV luminosity density estimated at $z\lesssim 14$ by JWST early galaxy data. Our findings raise the intriguing possibility that a high star formation efficiency at early times may trigger the onset of intense Ly$\alpha$ emission at redshift $z\lesssim 18$ and produce a cosmic 21-cm absorption signal 200 Myr after the Big Bang., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures, to be submitted to ApJL, comments are welcome

Ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs) are attractive candidates to probe cosmological models and test theories of galaxy formation at low masses; however, they are difficult to detect because of their low surface brightness. In the Local Group a handful of UDGs have been found to date, most of which are satellites of the Milky Way and M31, and only two are isolated galaxies. It is unclear whether so few UDGs are expected. We address this by studying the population of UDGs formed in hydrodynamic constrained simulations of the Local Group from the HESTIA suite. For a Local Group with a total enclosed mass $M_{\rm LG}\!\left(< 2.5\, {\rm Mpc}\right)=8\times10^{12}\, {\rm M_\odot}$, we predict that there are $12\pm3$ isolated UDGs (68% confidence) with stellar masses $10^6 \leq M_\ast\, /\, {\rm M_\odot} < 10^9,$ and effective radii $R_{\rm e} \geq 1.5\, {\rm kpc}$, within 2.5 Mpc of the Local Group, of which $2^{+2}_{-1}$ (68% confidence) are detectable in the footprint of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Accounting for survey incompleteness, we find that almost the entire population of UDGs in the Local Group field would be observable in a future all-sky survey with a depth similar to the SDSS, the Dark Energy Survey, or the Legacy Survey of Space and Time. SMSS\,J114447.77-430859.3 ($z=0.83$) has been identified in the SkyMapper Southern Survey as the most luminous quasar in the last $\sim 9\,\rm Gyr$. In this paper, we report on the eROSITA/Spectrum-Roentgen-Gamma (SRG) observations of the source from the eROSITA All Sky Survey, along with presenting results from recent monitoring performed using Swift, XMM-Newton, and NuSTAR. The source shows a clear variability by factors of $\sim 10$ and $\sim 2.7$ over timescales of a year and of a few days, respectively. When fit with an absorbed power law plus high-energy cutoff, the X-ray spectra reveal a $\Gamma=2.2 \pm 0.2$ and $E_{\rm cut}=23^{+26}_{-5}\,\rm keV$. Assuming Comptonisation, we estimate a coronal optical depth and electron temperature of $\tau=2.5-5.3\, (5.2-8)$ and $kT=8-18\, (7.5-14)\,\rm keV$, respectively, for a slab (spherical) geometry. The broadband SED is successfully modelled by assuming either a standard accretion disc illuminated by a central X-ray source, or a thin disc with a slim disc emissivity profile. The former model results in a black hole mass estimate of the order of $10^{10}\,M_\odot$, slightly higher than prior optical estimates; meanwhile, the latter model suggests a lower mass. Both models suggest sub-Eddington accretion when assuming a spinning black hole, and a compact ($\sim 10\,r_{\rm g}$) X-ray corona. The measured intrinsic column density and the Eddington ratio strongly suggest the presence of an outflow driven by radiation pressure. To assist in these tasks, we visually inspect DESI spectra of approximately 2500 bright galaxies, 3500 luminous red galaxies (LRGs), and 10,000 emission-line galaxies (ELGs) to obtain robust redshift identifications. We then utilize the visually inspected redshift information to characterize the performance of the DESI operation. Based on the visual inspection (VI) catalogs, our results show that the final survey design yields samples of bright galaxies, LRGs, and ELGs with purity greater than 99%. Moreover, we demonstrate that the precision of the redshift measurements is approximately 10 km s−1 for bright galaxies and ELGs and approximately 40 km s−1 for LRGs. The average redshift accuracy is within 10 km s−1 for the three types of galaxies. The VI process also helps improve the quality of the DESI data by identifying spurious spectral features introduced by the pipeline. Finally, we show examples of unexpected real astronomical objects, such as Lyα emitters and strong lensing candidates, identified by VI. These results demonstrate the importance and utility of visually inspecting data from incoming and upcoming surveys, especially during their early operation phases. © 2023. The Author(s). Observations of individual massive stars, super-luminous supernovae, gamma-ray bursts, and gravitational-wave events involving spectacular black-hole mergers, indicate that the low-metallicity Universe is fundamentally different from our own Galaxy. Many transient phenomena will remain enigmatic until we achieve a firm understanding of the physics and evolution of massive stars at low metallicity (Z). The Hubble Space Telescope has devoted 500 orbits to observe 250 massive stars at low Z in the ultraviolet (UV) with the COS and STIS spectrographs under the ULLYSES program. The complementary ``X-Shooting ULLYSES'' (XShootU) project provides enhanced legacy value with high-quality optical and near-infrared spectra obtained with the wide-wavelength coverage X-shooter spectrograph at ESO's Very Large Telescope. We present an overview of the XShootU project, showing that combining ULLYSES UV and XShootU optical spectra is critical for the uniform determination of stellar parameters such as effective temperature, surface gravity, luminosity, and abundances, as well as wind properties such as mass-loss rates in function of Z. As uncertainties in stellar and wind parameters percolate into many adjacent areas of Astrophysics, the data and modelling of the XShootU project is expected to be a game-changer for our physical understanding of massive stars at low Z. To be able to confidently interpret James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) spectra of the first stellar generations, the individual spectra of low Z stars need to be understood, which is exactly where XShootU can deliver., Comment: Accepted in A&A - 35 Pages, 12 Figures, 4 Tables, 2 Large Tables

We conduct hydrodynamical cosmological zoom simulations of fourteen voids to study the ability of haloes to accrete gas at different locations throughout the voids at z = 0. Measuring the relative velocity of haloes with respect to their ambient gas, we find that a tenth of the haloes are expected to be unable to accrete external gas due to its fast flow passed them (so called 'fast flow haloes'). These are typically located near void walls. We determine that these haloes have recently crossed the void wall and are still moving away from it. their motion counter to that of ambient gas falling towards the void wall results in fast flows that make external gas accretion very challenging, and often cause partial gas loss via the resultant ram pressures. Using an analytical approach, we model the impact of such ram pressures on the gas inside haloes of different masses. A halo's external gas accretion is typically cut off, with partial stripping of halo gas. For masses below a few times 10$^{9}$ M$_{\odot}$, their halo gas is heavily truncated but not completely stripped. We identify numerous examples of haloes with a clear jelly-fish like gas morphology, indicating their surrounding gas is being swept away, cutting them off from further external accretion. These results highlight how, even in the relatively low densities of void walls, a fraction of galaxies can interact with large-scale flows in a manner that has consequences for their gas content and ability to accrete gas., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures

The growth of galaxies in the early Universe is driven by accretion of circum- and inter-galactic gas. Simulations predict that steady streams of cold gas penetrate the dark matter halos of galaxies, providing the raw material necessary to sustain star formation. We report a filamentary stream of gas that extends for 100 kiloparsecs and connects to the massive radio galaxy 4C 41.17. The stream is detected using sub-millimeter observations of the [CI] line of atomic carbon, a tracer of neutral atomic or molecular hydrogen gas. The galaxy contains a central gas reservoir that is fueling a vigorous starburst. The accretion disks of active galactic nuclei (AGN) are promising locations for the merger of compact objects detected by gravitational wave (GW) observatories. Embedded within a baryon-rich, high density environment, mergers within AGN are the only GW channel where an electromagnetic (EM) counterpart must occur (whether detectable or not). Considering AGN with unusual flaring activity observed by the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF), we describe a search for candidate EM counterparts to binary black hole (BBH) mergers detected by LIGO/Virgo in O3. After removing probable false positives, we find nine candidate counterparts to BBH mergers mergers during O3 (seven in O3a, two in O3b) with a $p$-value of 0.019. Based on ZTF sky coverage, AGN geometry, and merger geometry, we expect $\approx 3(N_{\rm BBH}/83)(f_{\rm AGN}/0.5)$ potentially detectable EM counterparts from O3, where $N_{\rm BBH}$ is the total number of observed BBH mergers and $f_{\rm AGN}$ is the fraction originating in AGN. Further modeling of breakout and flaring phenomena in AGN disks is required to reduce our false positive rate. Two of the events are also associated with mergers with total masses $> 100M_\odot$, which is the expected rate for O3 if hierarchical (large mass) mergers occur in the AGN channel. Candidate EM counterparts in future GW observing runs can be better constrained by coverage of the Southern sky as well as spectral monitoring of unusual AGN flaring events in LIGO/Virgo alert volumes. A future set of reliable AGN EM counterparts to BBH mergers will yield an independent means of measuring cosmic expansion ($H_0$) as a function of redshift., 24 pages, 6 figures, submitted to ApJ

Context. Indirect observations of the cosmic-ray electron (CRE) distribution via synchrotron emission is crucial for deepening the understanding of the CRE transport in the interstellar medium, and in investigating the role of galactic outflows. Aims. In this paper, we quantify the contribution of diffusion- and advection-dominated transport of CREs in the galaxy M51 considering relevant energy loss processes. Methods. We used recent measurement from M 51 that allow for the derivation of the diffusion coefficient, the star formation rate, and the magnetic field strength. With this input, we solved the 3D transport equation numerically including the spatial dependence as provided by the measurements, using the open-source transport framework CRPropa (v3.1). We included 3D transport (diffusion and advection), and the relevant loss processes. Results. We find that the data can be described well with the parameters from recent measurements. For the best fit, it is required that the wind velocity, following from the observed star formation rate, must be decreased by a factor of 5. We find a model in which the inner galaxy is dominated by advective escape and the outer galaxy is composed by both diffusion and advection. Conclusions. Three-dimensional modelling of cosmic-ray transport in the face-on galaxy M51 allows for conclusions about the strength of the outflow of such galaxies by quantifying the need for a wind in the description of the cosmic-ray signatures. This opens up the possibility of investigating galactic winds in face-on galaxies in general., 6 pages, 7 figures

Spherical flows are a classic problem in astrophysics which are typically studied from a global perspective. However, much like with accretion discs, there are likely many instabilities and small scale phenomena which would be easier to study from a local perspective. For this purpose, we develop a local model for a spherically contracting/expanding gas cloud, in the spirit of the shearing box, $β$-plane and expanding box models which have had extensive use in studies of accretion discs, planets and stellar winds respectively. The local model consists of a, spatially homogeneous, periodic box with a time varying aspect ratio, along with a scale factor (analogous to that in FRW/Newtonian cosmology) relating the box coordinates to the physical coordinates of the global problem. We derive a number of symmetries and conservation laws exhibited by the local model. Some of these reflect symmetries of the periodic box, modified by the time dependant geometry, while others are local analogues for symmetries of the global problem. The energy, density and vorticity in the box also generically increase(/decrease) as a consequence of the collapse(/expansion). We derive a number of nonlinear solutions, including a local analogue of uniform density zonal flows, which grow as a consequence of angular momentum conservation. Our model is closely related to the accelerated expanding box model of Tenerani \& Velli and is an extension of the isotropic model considered by Robertson \& Goldreich., 20 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The warm-hot intergalactic medium (warm-hot IGM, or WHIM) pervades the filaments of the Cosmic Web and harbours half of the Universe's baryons. The WHIM's thermodynamic properties are notoriously hard to measure. Here we estimate a galaxy group - WHIM boundary temperature using a new method. In particular, we use a radio image of the giant radio galaxy (giant RG, or GRG) created by NGC 6185, a massive nearby spiral. We analyse this extraordinary object with a Bayesian 3D lobe model and deduce an equipartition pressure $P_\mathrm{eq} = 6 \cdot 10^{-16}\ \mathrm{Pa}$ -- among the lowest found in RGs yet. Using an X-ray-based statistical conversion for Fanaroff-Riley II RGs, we find a true lobe pressure $P = 1.5\substack{+1.7\\-0.4}\cdot 10^{-15}\ \mathrm{Pa}$. Cosmic Web reconstructions, group catalogues, and MHD simulations furthermore imply an $\mathrm{Mpc}$-scale IGM density $1 + \delta_\mathrm{IGM} = 40\substack{+30\\-10}$. The buoyantly rising lobes are crushed by the IGM at their inner side, where an approximate balance between IGM and lobe pressure occurs: $P_\mathrm{IGM} \approx P$. The ideal gas law then suggests an IGM temperature $T_\mathrm{IGM} = 11\substack{+12\\-5} \cdot 10^6\ \mathrm{K}$, or $k_\mathrm{B}T_\mathrm{IGM} = 0.9\substack{+1.0\\-0.4}\ \mathrm{keV}$, at the virial radius -- consistent with X-ray-derived temperatures of similarly massive groups. Interestingly, the method is not performing at its limit: in principle, estimates $T_\mathrm{IGM} \sim 4 \cdot 10^6\ \mathrm{K}$ are already possible -- rivalling the lowest X-ray measurements available. The technique's future scope extends from galaxy group outskirts to the WHIM. The photometric catalogue of galaxy clusters extracted from ESA Euclid data is expected to be very competitive for cosmological studies. Using state-of-the-art hydrodynamical simulations, we present systematic analyses simulating the expected weak lensing profiles from clusters in a variety of dynamic states and at wide range of redshifts. In order to derive cluster masses, we use a model consistent with the implementation within the Euclid Consortium of the dedicated processing function and find that, when jointly modelling mass and the concentration parameter of the Navarro-Frenk-White halo profile, the weak lensing masses tend to be, on average, biased low with respect to the true mass. Using a fixed value for the concentration, the mass bias is diminished along with its relative uncertainty. Simulating the weak lensing signal by projecting along the directions of the axes of the moment of inertia tensor ellipsoid, we find that orientation matters: when clusters are oriented along the major axis the lensing signal is boosted, and the recovered weak lensing mass is correspondingly overestimated. Typically, the weak lensing mass bias of individual clusters is modulated by the weak lensing signal-to-noise ratio, and the negative mass bias tends to be larger toward higher redshifts. However, when we use a fixed value of the concentration parameter the redshift evolution trend is reduced. These results provide a solid basis for the weak-lensing mass calibration required by the cosmological application of future cluster surveys from Euclid and Rubin., 18 pages, 14 figures; submitted to A&A

WEAVE, the new wide-field, massively multiplexed spectroscopic survey facility for the William Herschel Telescope, will see first light in late 2022. WEAVE comprises a new 2-degree field-of-view prime-focus corrector system, a nearly 1000-multiplex fibre positioner, 20 individually deployable 'mini' integral field units (IFUs), and a single large IFU. These fibre systems feed a dual-beam spectrograph covering the wavelength range 366$-$959\,nm at $R\sim5000$, or two shorter ranges at $R\sim20\,000$. After summarising the design and implementation of WEAVE and its data systems, we present the organisation, science drivers and design of a five- to seven-year programme of eight individual surveys to: (i) study our Galaxy's origins by completing Gaia's phase-space information, providing metallicities to its limiting magnitude for $\sim$3 million stars and detailed abundances for $\sim1.5$ million brighter field and open-cluster stars; (ii) survey $\sim0.4$ million Galactic-plane OBA stars, young stellar objects and nearby gas to understand the evolution of young stars and their environments; (iii) perform an extensive spectral survey of white dwarfs; (iv) survey $\sim400$ neutral-hydrogen-selected galaxies with the IFUs; (v) study properties and kinematics of stellar populations and ionised gas in $z1$ million spectra of LOFAR-selected radio sources; (viii) trace structures using intergalactic/circumgalactic gas at $z>2$. The Gaia Radial Velocity Spectrometer provides the unique opportunity of a spectroscopic analysis of millions of stars at medium-resolution in the near-infrared. This wavelength range includes the Ca II infrared triplet (IRT), which is a good diagnostics of magnetic activity in the chromosphere of late-type stars. Here we present the method devised for inferring the Gaia stellar activity index together with its scientific validation. A sample of well studied PMS stars is considered to identify the regime in which the Gaia stellar activity index may be affected by mass accretion. The position of these stars in the colour-magnitude diagram and the correlation with the amplitude of the photometric rotational modulation is also scrutinised. Three regimes of the chromospheric stellar activity are identified, confirming suggestions made by previous authors on much smaller $R'_{\rm HK}$ datasets. The highest stellar activity regime is associated with PMS stars and RS CVn systems, in which activity is enhanced by tidal interaction. Some evidence of a bimodal distribution in MS stars with $T_{\rm eff}\ge$ 5000 K is also found, which defines the two other regimes, without a clear gap in between. Stars with 3500 K$\le T_{\rm eff} \le$ 5000 K are found to be either very active PMS stars or active MS stars with a unimodal distribution in chromospheric activity. A dramatic change in the activity distribution is found for $T_{\rm eff}\le$3500 K, with a dominance of low activity stars close to the transition between partially- and fully-convective stars and a rise in activity down into the fully-convective regime., Comment: 18 pages, 10 figures, 2 tables, submitted to A&A

(Abridged) Most massive stars are located in multiple systems. The modeling of disk fragmentation, a possible mechanism leading to stellar multiplicity, relies on parallel 3D simulation codes whose agreement remains to be evaluated. Using the Cartesian AMR code RAMSES, we compare disk fragmentation in a centrally-condensed protostellar system to the study of Oliva & Kuiper (2020) performed on a grid in spherical coordinates using PLUTO. Two RAMSES runs are considered and give qualitatively distinct pictures. When allowing for unlimited sink particle creation, gas fragmentation leads to a multiple stellar system whose multiplicity is affected by the grid when triggering fragmentation and by numerically-assisted mergers. On the other hand, using a unique, central, fixed sink particle, a centrally-condensed system forms, similar to that reported in PLUTO. The RAMSES-PLUTO comparison is performed with the latter: agreement between the two codes is found regarding the first rotationally-supported disk formation, the presence of an accretion shock onto it, the first fragmentation phase. Gaseous fragments form and their properties are in agreement between the two codes. As a minor difference, fragments dynamics causes the disk structure to be sub-Keplerian in RAMSES whereas it is found to be Keplerian and reaches quiescence in PLUTO. We attribute this discrepancy to the central star being twice less massive in RAMSES because of the different stellar accretion subgrid models. In a centrally-condensed system, the agreement between RAMSES and PLUTO regarding many of the collapse properties and fragmentation process is good. Fragmentation occurring in the innermost region and numerical choices (use of sink particles, grid) have a crucial impact when similar but smooth initial conditions are employed - more crucial than the code's choice - on the system's outcome, multiple or centrally-condensed., 17 pages, 16 figures; accepted for publication in A&A

We present re-processed flux calibrated spectra of 406 stars from the UVES-POP stellar library in the wavelength range 320-1025 nm, which can be used for stellar population synthesis. The spectra are provided in the two versions having spectral resolving power R=20,000 and R=80,000. Raw spectra from the ESO data archive were re-reduced using the latest version of the UVES data reduction pipeline with some additional algorithms that we developed. The most significant improvements in comparison with the original UVES-POP release are: (i) an updated Echelle order merging, which eliminates "ripples" present in the published spectra, (ii) a full telluric correction, (iii) merging of non-overlapping UVES spectral setups taking into account the global continuum shape, (iv) a spectrophotometric correction and absolute flux calibration, and (v) estimates of the interstellar extinction. For 364 stars from our sample, we computed atmospheric parameters $T_\mathrm{eff}$, surface gravity log $g$, metallicity [Fe/H], and $\alpha$-element enhancement [$\alpha$/Fe] by using a full spectrum fitting technique based on a grid of synthetic stellar atmospheres and a novel minimization algorithm. We also provide projected rotational velocity $v\sin i$ and radial velocity $v_{rad}$ estimates. The overall absolute flux uncertainty in the re-processed dataset is better than 2% with sub-% accuracy for about half of the stars. A comparison of the recalibrated UVES-POP spectra with other spectral libraries shows a very good agreement in flux; at the same time, $Gaia$ DR3 BP/RP spectra are often discrepant with our data, which we attribute to spectrophotometric calibration issues in $Gaia$ DR3., Comment: 26 pages, 19 figures, accepted for publication in ApJS

K.K.K. acknowledges support from the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation., We report the discovery of a triply imaged active galactic nucleus (AGN), lensed by the galaxy cluster MACS J0035.4−2015 (z d = 0.352). The object is detected in Hubble Space Telescope imaging taken for the RELICS program. It appears to have a quasi-stellar nucleus consistent with a point-source, with a de-magnified radius of re ≲ 100 pc. The object is spectroscopically confirmed to be an AGN at z spec = 2.063 ± 0.005 showing broad rest-frame UV emission lines, and detected in both X-ray observations with Chandra and in ALCS ALMA band 6 (1.2 mm) imaging. It has a relatively faint rest-frame UV luminosity for a quasar-like object, MUV, 1450 = −19.7 ± 0.2. The object adds to just a few quasars or other X-ray sources known to be multiply lensed by a galaxy cluster. Some diffuse emission from the host galaxy is faintly seen around the nucleus, and there is a faint object nearby sharing the same multiple-imaging symmetry and geometric redshift, possibly an interacting galaxy or a star-forming knot in the host. We present an accompanying lens model, calculate the magnifications and time delays, and infer the physical properties of the source. We find the rest-frame UV continuum and emission lines to be dominated by the AGN, and the optical emission to be dominated by the host galaxy of modest stellar mass M✶ ≃ 109.2 M⊙. We also observe some variation in the AGN emission with time, which may suggest that the AGN used to be more active. Star formation rate functions (SFRFs) give an instantaneous view of the distribution of star formation rates (SFRs) in galaxies at different epochs. They are a complementary and more stringent test for models than the galaxy stellar mass function, which gives an integrated view of the past star formation activity. However, the exploration of SFRFs has been limited thus far due to difficulties in assessing the SFR from observed quantities and probing the SFRF over a wide range of SFRs. We overcome these limitations thanks to an original method that predicts the infrared luminosity from the rest-frame UV/optical color of a galaxy and then its SFR over a wide range of stellar masses and redshifts. We applied this technique to the deep imaging survey HSC-CLAUDS combined with near-infrared and UV photometry. We provide the first SFR functions with reliable measurements in the high- and low-SFR regimes up to $z=2$ and compare our results with previous observations and four state-of-the-art hydrodynamical simulations., Comment: 29 pages, 19 figures

We study the link between gas flow events and key galaxy scaling relations: the relations between star formation rate (SFR) and stellar mass (the main sequence, MS), gas metallicity and stellar mass (the mass-metallicity relation, MZR) and gas metallicity, stellar mass and SFR (the fundamental metallicity relation, FMR). Using all star-forming galaxies (SFGs) in the 22 MUSE fields of the MusE GAs FLOw and Wind (MEGAFLOW) survey, we derive the MS, MZR and FMR scaling relations for 385 SFGs with $M = 10^8 - 10^{11.5}$ $M_\odot$ at redshifts 0.35 < z < 0.85. Using the MUSE data and complementary X-Shooter spectra at 0.85 < z < 1.4, we determine the locations of 21 SFGs associated with inflowing or outflowing circumgalactic gas (i.e. with strong MgII absorption in background quasar spectra) relative to these scaling relations. Compared to a control sample of galaxies without gas flows (i.e., without MgII absorption within 70 kpc of the quasar), SFGs with inflow events (i.e., MgII absorption along the major axis) are preferentially located above the MS, while SFGs with ouflow events (i.e., MgII absorption along the minor axis) are preferentially more metal rich. Our observations support the scenario in which gas accretion increases the SFR while diluting the metal content and where circumgalactic outflows are found in more metal-rich galaxies., 13 pages, 8 figures

Whether ionization feedback triggers the formation of massive stars is highly debated. Using ALMA 3 mm observations with a spatial resolution of $\sim 0.05$ pc and a mass sensitivity of 1.1 $\rm M_\odot$ beam$^{-1}$ at 20 K, we investigate the star formation and gas flow structures within the ionizing feedback-driven structure, a clump-scale massive ($\gtrsim 1500$ $\rm M_\odot$) bright-rimmed cloud (BRC) associated with IRAS 18290-0924. This BRC is bound only if external compression from ionized gas is considered. A small-scale ($\lesssim1$ pc) age sequence along the direction of ionizing radiation is revealed for the embedded cores and protostars, which suggests triggered star formation via radiation-driven implosion (RDI). Furthermore, filamentary gas structures converge towards the cores located in the BRC's center, indicating that these filaments are fueling mass towards cores. The local core-scale mass infall rate derived from H$^{13}$CO$^+$ $J=1-0$ blue profile is of the same order of magnitude as the filamentary mass inflow rate, approximately 1 $\rm M_\odot$ kyr$^{-1}$. A photodissociation region (PDR) covering the irradiated clump surface is detected in several molecules, such as CCH, HCO$^+$, and CS whereas the spatial distribution stratification of these molecules is indistinct. CCH spectra of the PDR possibly indicate a photoevaporation flow leaving the clump surface with a projected velocity of $\sim2$ km s$^{-1}$. Our new observations show that RDI accompanied by a clump-fed process is operating in this massive BRC. This work aims to localize the VHE (100 GeV-100 TeV) gamma-ray emission from M87 and probe a potential extended hadronic emission component in the inner Virgo Cluster. The search for a steady and extended gamma-ray signal around M87 can constrain the cosmic-ray energy density and the pressure exerted by the cosmic rays onto the intra-cluster medium, and allow us to investigate the role of the cosmic rays in the active galactic nucleus feedback as a heating mechanism in the Virgo Cluster. H.E.S.S. telescopes are sensitive to VHE gamma rays and have been utilized to observe M87 since 2004. We utilized a Bayesian block analysis to identify M87 emission states with H.E.S.S. observations from 2004 until 2021, dividing them into low, intermediate, and high states. Because of the causality argument, an extended ($\gtrsim$kpc) signal is allowed only in steady emission states. Hence, we fitted the morphology of the 120h low state data and found no significant gamma-ray extension. Therefore, we derived for the low state an upper limit of 58'(corresponding to $\approx$4.6kpc) in the extension of a single-component morphological model described by a rotationally symmetric 2D Gaussian model at 99.7% confidence level. Our results exclude the radio lobes ($\approx$30 kpc) as the principal component of the VHE gamma-ray emission from the low state of M87. The gamma-ray emission is compatible with a single emission region at the radio core of M87. These results, with the help of two multiple-component models, constrain the maximum cosmic-ray to thermal pressure ratio $X_{{CR,max.}}$$\lesssim$$0.32$ and the total energy in cosmic-ray protons (CRp) to $U_{CR}$$\lesssim$5$\times10^{58}$ erg in the inner 20kpc of the Virgo Cluster for an assumed CRp power-law distribution in momentum with spectral index $\alpha_{p}$=2.1., Published by EDP Sciences, Les Ulis

Astrophysical surveys rely heavily on the classification of sources as stars, galaxies or quasars from multi-band photometry. Surveys in narrow-band filters allow for greater discriminatory power, but the variety of different types and redshifts of the objects present a challenge to standard template-based methods. In this work, which is part of larger effort that aims at building a catalogue of quasars from the miniJPAS survey, we present a Machine Learning-based method that employs Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) to classify point-like sources including the information in the measurement errors. We validate our methods using data from the miniJPAS survey, a proof-of-concept project of the J-PAS collaboration covering $\sim$ 1 deg$^2$ of the northern sky using the 56 narrow-band filters of the J-PAS survey. Due to the scarcity of real data, we trained our algorithms using mocks that were purpose-built to reproduce the distributions of different types of objects that we expect to find in the miniJPAS survey, as well as the properties of the real observations in terms of signal and noise. We compare the performance of the CNNs with other well-established Machine Learning classification methods based on decision trees, finding that the CNNs improve the classification when the measurement errors are provided as inputs. The predicted distribution of objects in miniJPAS is consistent with the putative luminosity functions of stars, quasars and unresolved galaxies. We prepared a sample of oxirane doubly deuterated at one C atom and studied its rotational spectrum in the laboratory for the first time between 120~GHz and 1094~GHz. Accurate spectroscopic parameters up to eighth order were determined, and the calculated rest frequencies were used to identify $c$-CD$_2$CH$_2$O tentatively in the interstellar medium in the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array Protostellar Interferometric Line Survey (PILS) of the Class 0 protostellar system IRAS 16293$-$2422. The $c$-CD$_2$CH$_2$O to $c$-C$_2$H$_4$O ratio was estimated to be $\sim$0.054 with $T_{\rm rot} = 125$ K. This value translates to a D-to-H ratio of $\sim$0.16 per H atom which is higher by a factor of 4.5 than the $\sim$0.036 per H atom obtained for $c$-C$_2$H$_3$DO. We study active galactic nucleus (AGN) feedback in nearby (z, V. Olivares, Y. Su, W. Forman, M. Gaspari, Felipe Andrade-Santos, P. Salome, P. Nulsen, A. Edge, F. Combes, and C. Jones

The ESA Euclid mission will provide high-quality imaging for about 1.5 billion galaxies. A software pipeline to automatically process and analyse such a huge amount of data in real time is being developed by the Science Ground Segment of the Euclid Consortium; this pipeline will include a model-fitting algorithm, which will provide photometric and morphological estimates of paramount importance for the core science goals of the mission and for legacy science. The Euclid Morphology Challenge is a comparative investigation of the performance of five model-fitting software packages on simulated Euclid data, aimed at providing the baseline to identify the best suited algorithm to be implemented in the pipeline. In this paper we describe the simulated data set, and we discuss the photometry results. A companion paper (Euclid Collaboration: Bretonni\`ere et al. 2022) is focused on the structural and morphological estimates. We created mock Euclid images simulating five fields of view of 0.48 deg2 each in the $I_E$ band of the VIS instrument, each with three realisations of galaxy profiles (single and double S\'ersic, and 'realistic' profiles obtained with a neural network); for one of the fields in the double S\'ersic realisation, we also simulated images for the three near-infrared $Y_E$, $J_E$ and $H_E$ bands of the NISP-P instrument, and five Rubin/LSST optical complementary bands ($u$, $g$, $r$, $i$, and $z$). To analyse the results we created diagnostic plots and defined ad-hoc metrics. Enshrouded in several well-known controversies, dwarf galaxies have been extensively studied to learn about the underlying cosmology, notwithstanding that physical processes regulating their properties are poorly understood. To shed light on these processes, we introduce the Pandora suite of 17 high-resolution (3.5 parsec half-cell side) dwarf galaxy formation cosmological simulations. Commencing with thermo-turbulent star formation and mechanical supernova feedback, we gradually increase the complexity of physics incorporated leading to full-physics models combining magnetism, on-the-fly radiative transfer and the corresponding stellar photoheating, and SN-accelerated cosmic rays. We investigate combinations of these processes, comparing them with observations to constrain what are the main mechanisms determining dwarf galaxy properties. We find hydrodynamical `SN feedback-only' simulations struggle to produce realistic dwarf galaxies, leading either to overquenched or too centrally concentrated, dispersion dominated systems when compared to observed field dwarfs. Accounting for radiation with cosmic rays results in extended and rotationally-supported systems. Spatially `distributed' feedback leads to realistic stellar and HI masses as well as kinematics. Furthermore, resolved kinematic maps of our full-physics models predict kinematically distinct clumps and kinematic misalignments of stars, HI and HII after star formation events. Episodic star formation combined with its associated feedback induces more core-like dark matter central profiles, which our `SN feedback-only' models struggle to achieve. Our results demonstrate the complexity of physical processes required to capture realistic dwarf galaxy properties, making tangible predictions for integral field unit surveys, radio synchrotron emission, and for galaxy and multi-phase interstellar medium properties that JWST will probe., Comment: Submitted to MNRAS. 23 pages and 11 figures

Recent spectroscopic explorations of large Galactic stellar samples stars have revealed the existence of red giants with [$\alpha$/Fe] ratios that are anomalously high, given their relatively young ages. We revisit the GALAH DR3 survey to look for both dwarfs and giants with extreme [$\alpha$/Fe] ratios, that is, the upper 1% in the [$\alpha$/Fe]-[Fe/H] plane over the range in [Fe/H] between -1.1 and +0.4 dex. We refer to these outliers as "ex$\alpha$fe" stars. We used the GALAH DR3 data and their value-added catalog to trace the properties (abundances, masses, ages, and kinematics) of the ex$\alpha$fe stars. We investigated the effects of secular evolution and the magnitude limitations of GALAH to understand the mass and metallicity distributions of the sample stars. We also discuss the corresponding biases in previous studies of stars with high [$\alpha$/Fe] in other surveys. We find both dwarf and giant ex$\alpha$fe stars younger than 3 Gyr, which we refer to as "y-ex$\alpha$fe" stars. Dwarf y-ex$\alpha$fe stars exhibit lithium abundances similar to those of young [$\alpha$/Fe]-normal dwarfs at the same age and [Fe/H]. In particular, the youngest and most massive stars of both populations exhibit the highest Li abundances, A(Li)~3.5 dex (i.e., a factor of 2 above the protosolar value), while cooler/older stars exhibit the same Li depletion patterns increasing with both decreasing mass and increasing age. In addition, the [Fe/H] and mass distributions of both the dwarf and giant y-ex$\alpha$fe stars do not differ from those of their [$\alpha$/Fe]-normal counterparts found in the thin disk and they share the same kinematic properties. We conclude that y-ex$\alpha$fe dwarfs and giants are indeed young, their mass distribution shows no peculiarity, and they differ from young [$\alpha$/Fe]-normal stars by their extreme [$\alpha$/Fe] content only. We present a rest-UV selected sample of 32 lensed galaxies at $z\sim 2$ observed with joint Keck/LRIS rest-UV and Keck/MOSFIRE rest-optical spectra behind the clusters Abell 1689, MACS J0717, and MACS J1149. The sample pushes towards the faintest UV luminosities observed ($-19 \le {\rm M_{\rm UV}} \le -17$) at this redshift. The fraction of dwarf galaxies identified as Ly$\alpha$ emitters ($\rm EW \ge 20\ \overset{\lower.5em\circ}{\mathrm{A}}$) is ${\rm X_{\rm LAE}}=25^{+15}_{-10}\%$. We use the Balmer lines and UV continuum to estimate the intrinsic EW allowing us to distinguish the effects of the ionizing spectra and Ly$\alpha$ escape fraction on the observed EW distribution. Fainter galaxies ($\rm M_{\rm UV} > -19$) show larger intrinsic EWs and escape fractions than brighter galaxies. Only galaxies with intrinsic EWs greater than 40$\ \overset{\lower.5em\circ}{\mathrm{A}}$ have escape fractions larger than 0.05. We find an anti-correlation between the escape fraction and $\rm A_V$ as well as UV spectral slope. The volumetric escape fraction of our sample is $f_{\rm esc}^{\rm Ly\alpha} = 4.59^{+2.0}_{-1.4}\%$ in agreement with measurements found elsewhere in the literature. About half of the total integrated Ly$\alpha$ luminosity density comes from galaxies with ${\rm EW}_{\rm obs}>20\ \overset{\lower.5em\circ}{\mathrm{A}}$., Comment: 11 pages, 13 figures

We present kinematics of 6 local extremely metal-poor galaxies (EMPGs) with low metallicities ($0.016-0.098\ Z_{\odot}$) and low stellar masses ($10^{4.7}-10^{7.6} M_{\odot}$). Taking deep medium-high resolution ($R\sim7500$) integral-field spectra with 8.2-m Subaru, we resolve the small inner velocity gradients and dispersions of the EMPGs with H$\alpha$ emission. Carefully masking out sub-structures originated by inflow and/or outflow, we fit 3-dimensional disk models to the observed H$\alpha$ flux, velocity, and velocity-dispersion maps. All the EMPGs show rotational velocities ($v_{\rm rot}$) of 5--23 km s$^{-1}$ smaller than the velocity dispersions ($\sigma_{0}$) of 17--31 km s$^{-1}$, indicating dispersion-dominated ($v_{\rm rot}/\sigma_{0}=0.29-0.80, Comment: ApJ in Press

The detection with of the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) of dust-rich high redshift galaxies whose cold dust emission is spatially disconnected from the ultraviolet emission bears a challenge for modelling their spectral energy distributions (SED) with codes based on an energy budget between the stellar and dust components. We test the validity of energy balance modelling on a nearby resolved galaxy with vastly different ultraviolet and infrared spatial distributions and infer what information can be reliably retrieved from the analysis of the full spectral energy distribution. We use 15 broadband images of the Antennae Galaxies ranging from far-ultraviolet to far-infrared and divide Arp 244 into 58 square ~1 kpc$^2$ regions. We fit the data with CIGALE to determine the star formation rate, stellar mass and dust attenuation of each region. We compare these quantities for the addition of the 58 regions to the ones obtained for Arp 244 as a whole and find that both estimates are consistent within one sigma. We present the spatial distribution of these physical parameters as well as the shape of the attenuation curve across the Antennae Galaxies . We present the General Stellar Parameterizer from Photometry (GSP-Phot), which is part of the astrophysical parameters inference system (Apsis). GSP-Phot is designed to produce a homogeneous catalogue of parameters for hundreds of millions of single non-variable stars based on their astrometry, photometry, and low-resolution BP/RP spectra. These parameters are effective temperature, surface gravity, metallicity, absolute $M_G$ magnitude, radius, distance, and extinction for each star. GSP-Phot uses a Bayesian forward-modelling approach to simultaneously fit the BP/RP spectrum, parallax, and apparent $G$ magnitude. A major design feature of GSP-Phot is the use of the apparent flux levels of BP/RP spectra to derive, in combination with isochrone models, tight observational constraints on radii and distances. We carefully validate the uncertainty estimates by exploiting repeat Gaia observations of the same source. The data release includes GSP-Phot results for 471 million sources with $G20$), mostly within 2kpc. Metallicity estimates exhibit substantial biases compared to literature values and are only useful at a qualitative level. However, we provide an empirical calibration of our metallicity estimates that largely removes these biases. Extinctions $A_0$ and $A_{\rm BP}$ show typical differences from reference values of 0.07-0.09 mag. MCMC samples of the parameters are also available for 95% of the sources.
