International audience; Erebus volcano, Antarctica, is the southern-most active volcano on the globe. Despite its remoteness and harsh conditions, Erebus volcano provides an unprecedented and unique opportunity to study the petrogenesis and evolution, as well as the passive and explosive degassing, of an alkaline magmatic system with a persistently open and magma-filled conduit. In this invited contribution, we review nearly five decades of scientific research related to Erebus volcano, including geological, geophysical, geochemical, and microbiological observations and interpretations. Mt Erebus truly is one of the world's most significant natural volcano laboratories where the lofty scientific goal of studying a volcanic system from mantle to microbe is being realized.

International audience; Silver played a major role in the progressive monetization of antique Mediterranean. Here, we combine Pb and Ag isotopes with volatile trace elements (Bi, Sb, As) to assess whether, during the Roman occupation of Iberia, galena constituted a significant source of silver. We find that Pb and Ag isotopic compositions of 47 samples of galena from eight different Iberian mining provinces, many of them exploited during Roman times, are uncorrelated which indicates that their respective isotopic variabilities depend on different petrogenetic processes.

International audience; In an attempt to clarify the significance of Pb model ages in Pb-Zn sedimentary deposits, we report high-precision Pb isotopic compositions for 64 galenas and 52 K-feldspars, the former from ores and the latter separated from granites. All samples are from Spain and the French Pyrenees. Lead from galena ores is of unequivocal continental origin. With few exceptions, Pb model ages systematically exceed emplacement ages by up to 400 Ma, a gap which is well outside the uncertainties of ~30 Ma assigned to the model. The histogram of the new high-precision Pb isotope data shows prominent peaks of galena Pb model ages at 94±38 Ma and 392±39 Ma. When the data are consolidated with literature data and examined in 3-dimensional Pb isotope space, cluster analysis identifies five groups. The model ages of the peaks occur, in order of decreasing peak intensity, at 395±40 (Middle Devonian), 90±34 Ma (Middle Cretaceous), and 613±42 Ma (Neoproterozoic), with two minor peaks at 185+26 Ma (Jurassic) and 313±41 (Upper Carboniferous). To a large extent, the model ages centered around these peaks correspond to distinct localities. The ages of the peaks do not coincide with any of the Betic, Variscan, or Pan-African tectonic events, which are the main tectonic episodes that shaped Iberian geology, but rather match well-known global oceanic anoxic events. It is argued that surges of metals weathered from continental surfaces scorched during anoxic events accumulated and combined in anoxic water masses with unoxidized marine sulfide released by submarine hydrothermal activity to precipitate the primary Pb-Zn stock. Frozen Pb isotope compositions require that galenas from black shales are the source of the final ores. The Revised manuscript with no changes marked Click here to view linked References 2 sulfides were later remobilized by large-scale convective circulation of basinal and hydrothermal fluids. The peaks of K-feldspar Pb model ages are distinct from those of galenas and do not correlate with magmatic emplacement ages. It is suggested that they instead reflect local circulation in Paleozoic sediments surrounding individual plutons. While Pb isotopes can be used as a regional provenance tool, such an approach requires that the data are considered in a fully 3-dimensional space.

International audience; The reasons why the Western Mediterranean, especially Carthage and Rome, resisted monetization relative to the Eastern Mediterranean are still unclear. Here, we address this question by combining lead and silver isotope abundances in silver coinage from the Aegean, Magna Graecia, Carthage, and the Roman Republic. The clear relationships observed between 109 Ag/ 107 Ag and 208 Pb/ 206 Pb reflect mixing of silver ores or silver objects with lead metal used for cupellation. The combined analysis of Ag and Pb isotopes reveal important information about the technology of smelting. The Greek world extracted Ag and Pb from associated ores, whereas, on the Iberian Peninsula, Carthaginians and Republican era Romans applied Phoenician cupellation techniques and added exotic Pb to lead-poor Ag ores. Massive silver re-cupellation is observed in Rome during the Second Punic War. After defeating the Carthaginians and the Macedonians in the late 2 nd century BCE, the Romans brought together the efficient, millennium-old techniques of silver extraction of the Phoenicians, who considered this metal a simple commodity, with the monetization of economy introduced by the Greeks.

International audience; The conventional approach to ore provenance studies of ancient silver coins and artifacts has been to first analyze and then try to match them to published data about mining districts, a difficult task given our incomplete knowledge of these. While literary sources are useful to identify possible provenances, they potentially bias interpretations proper because of a variety of limitations of their time. Archeological evidence in the form of mining shafts, galleries, spoil heaps, and tools also provides a tangible and reliable record of mining, but dating such activity can be problematic and the record is inconsistent. Here we propose a new approach driven by Pb isotopic data rather than numismatic groups. Statistical analysis of Pb isotopic data is used to identify ore-defined isotopic clusters. This new method is based on an algorithm that predicts the number of isotopic clusters necessary to fulfill the simple condition that variance within isotopic clusters is minimized whereas inter-cluster variance is maximized. Since each cluster reflects a discrete geological episode within a particular environment broadly datable to a specific Pb model age, it can be identified as a potential source exploited by ancient miners. We explore the potential of this method in two examples using data from coins and ores respectively. In the first example, Roman Republican silver coins form three 'end-member' clusters sourced in mining districts with Cenozoic, Mesozoic, and Paleozoic Pb model ages. The example demonstrates how sources of silver used to mint coinage of the Roman Republic shifted within 50 years of the end of the Second Punic War in 201 BCE. In the second example using Aegean galena samples, Pb isotopes distinguish components with model ages datable to the Hercynian basement, the recent Aegean tectonic province, and Cyprus, noting that significant silver mining districts may remain unidentified in either Spain or the Aegean world. We further clarify a number of potential analytical issues and advocate that users of Pb isotopes for tracing archeological artifacts measure all four lead isotopes and inspect the 12 proposed isotope combinations in order to select those that provide the best representation of the data. We also emphasize that full advantage should be taken of the geologically informed parameters (model age and Th/U/Pb relationships) to identify the geological context of metal sources.

International audience; Lead isotopic systematics of U-poor minerals, such as sulfides and feldspars, can provide unique insights into the origin and evolution of continents because these minerals ''freeze in'' the Pb isotopic composition of the crust during major tectonothermal events, allowing the history of a continent to be told through Pb isotopes. Lead model ages constrain the timing of crust formation while time-integrated U/ Pb, Th/Pb, and Th/U ratios shed light onto key geochemical processes associated with continent formation. Using 6800 Pb isotope measurements of primarily lead ores and minor K-feldspar, we mapped out the Pb isotope systematics across Europe and the Mediterranean. Lead model ages define spatially distinct age provinces, consistent with major tectonic events ranging from the Paleozoic to the Proterozoic and latest Archean. However, the regions defined by time-integrated U/Pb and Th/Pb ratios cut across the boundaries of age provinces, with high U/Pb systematics characterizing most of southern Europe. Magmatic influx, followed by segregation of dense sulfide-rich mafic cumulates, resulted in foundering of U-and Th-poor lower crust, thereby changing the bulk composition of the continental crust and leading to distinct timeintegrated U-Th/Pb provinces. We show that the tectonic assembly of small crustal fragments leaves the crust largely undifferentiated, whereas the formation of supercontinents results in fundamental changes in the composition of the crust, identifiable in time and space by means of Pb isotope systematics. Observations based on Pb isotopes open up a new perspective on possible relationships between crustal thickness and geodynamic processes, in particular the role of crustal foundering into the mantle and the mechanisms responsible for the existence of cratons.

International audience; Portus constituted the harbour complex of imperial Rome from the 1st century AD onward. Located in a deltaic environment, the harbour was subject to influences of the Tyrrhenian marine environment and of the fluvial waters of the Tiber River. Such complex sedimentary processes registered also rapid environ-mental changes. Our research is based on the study of a sediment core (TR14) drilled in the access channel of the hexagonal basin of Trajan (Fig. 1). The goal of our study is the reconstruction the palaeo-environmental dynamics of the water column of the harbour according to a geochemical and an ostra-codological approach. The analysis of the ostracod assemblage has evidenced several palaeo-environmental phases. These phases could be identified through the autoeco-logical analysis of the 25 recognised taxa and their classification in four eco-logical groups (MAZZINI et al., 2011). The results obtained present a succession of four environments, defined by variations in salinity and oxygenation. From the bottom to a depth of 643 cm, the environment was a marine to brackish lagoon influenced by strong marine inputs as evidenced by the vic-ariance of Cyprideis torosa and Pontocythere turbida. P. turbida is a typical phy-tal ostracod often found together with Posidonia oceanica remains. From 600 to 454 cm the coastal marine environment becomes more stable. This could be linked to the establishment of the harbour activities and maintenance. The sta-bility of the environment is still evident in the subsequent group, from 435 to 305 cm, characterised by the dominance of C. torosa and the lack of any fresh-water influence. The increase in salinity could be related to evaporative effects on a closed body of water. From 300 cm the freshwater input becomes clear and constant although the influence of the close sea/brackish body of water is still noticeable. In the last metres a typical freshwater assemblage is represent-ed, dominated by truly freshwater taxa (Candona sp. and Pseudocandona marchica), evidence for the occurrence of a freshwater marsh. The geochemical results were analysed by Principal Components Analy-sis (PCA). The samples were assembled in several groups based on a Hierar-chical Ascendant Classification (cluster analysis). Through PCA analysis, the geochemical and ostracological results of the "functional" harbour unit (800-300 cm) were combined. The different elements recorded in the geochemical analysis are distributed according to the main ostracod assemblages (from fresh water to brackish water and sea water). These elements have been grouped according to the model proposed by SAGEMAN & LYONS (2003). An evolution of these deposits in three stages is proposed. While the fluvial envi-ronments were quite well oxygenated, the harbour environment was more characterised by an increasing anoxia of the water column as it was observed by ELMALEH et al. (2012) in the harbor of Tyre. In a second phase, the varia-tions in salinity distinguished the nature of the fluvial environments and the degree of openness to the sea of the harbour environment. The final phase is specific to a body of water completely isolated from fluviatile and marine

Pb isotopes ,geological map ,[SHS]Humanities and Social Sciences - Abstract
International audience; The development of large seismic arrays and the large throughput of MC-ICP-MS are providing new impetus to the integration of seismic tomography data (VP, VS, attenuation, shear-wave splitting), geophysical maps (heat flow), and geochemical maps with geology. Synoptic representation of geochemical data started nearly 50 years ago with Hurley and others, who demonstrated that time-integrated parent/daughter ratios (Rb/Sr, U/Pb, Sm/Nd) and apparent crustal residence times inferred from the isotope compositions of radiogenic elements in felsic magmas and metamorphic rocks could be used to identify tectonic provinces. Geochemical parameters derived from such long-lived radioactive isotopic systems are far less noisy than raw trace element ratios in the same rocks: for example, measured uranium concentrations are severely biased by the transit of samples through the water table during erosive exhumation. The U-Th-Pb isotope system is particularly powerful. However, georeferenced geochemical databases are still incomplete. We recently began to map at the continental scale the Pb isotope compositions into axes with geologically informative content: the two-stage Pb model age, which dates the closure of the U-Pb chronometer, and the time-integrated U/Pb (mu) and Th/U (kappa) ratios of the Pb source [1]. Maps of model ages essentially depict the maximum extension of the ~600°C isotherm. Because rocks from granulite facies terranes tend to have Th/U higher than the planetary value of 3.88, maps of kappa ratios track the rise of lower crustal material and its melts. We compiled maps of the above-mentioned Pb parameters from the archeological OXALID database (Western Europe) [2] and localized its samples and from Mamani et al.'s [3] database for the Central Andes. For the Western US, we used NAVDAT ( http://www.navdat.org/ ) for Cenozoic continental felsic igneous rocks and added ore data from the literature (Bouchet et al., this meeting). In all cases, we found that the regional consistency of model ages on the one hand and kappa values on the other hand is very strong and in particular highlights the existence of well-defined Pb isotope provinces. We also found some striking similarity between these provinces and prominent seismological features, such as Moho depth and VP/VS. The understanding of the nature, age, and dynamic role of the units identified by seismic tomography will clearly benefit from incorporating geochemical and geophysical spatial information into surface geology. International audience; The present study focuses on the analysis of palaeo-pollutions and the sedimentary environments in which they were trapped in the Roman Portus harbor. Portus received heavy-metals pollution both from local foundries, fulling, and tanning and from distal upstream development in Rome. Rome wastewaters, which accounted for up to 3 percent of the total Tiber discharge, were forwarded to Portus through a network of canals (Canale Romano and Canale Trasverso) connecting the river to the sea. In this manner, harbor basins accumulated both allochthonous and autochthonous heavy metals. We determined major and trace element concentrations as well as Pb isotope compositions in a high-resolution set of samples from sediment cores recovered in the Portus area. Principal component analysis of elements that are less prone to the influence of human activities, such as Ca, Mg, Mn, Zr, K, Al, Ti, Na, Sr, and Mn, was used in conjunction with metallic elements to break down the sedimentary load into local and regional components. The record of Pb concentrations and isotopic compositions reveals an overall general trend on which other signatures are superimposed. The geochemical background of the Tiber catchment (24.7-26.2 ppm Pb and 206 Pb/ 207 Pb ~ 1.198) represents geologically young (model age Tm

Conference Information: 73rd Annual Meeting of the Meteoritical-Society New York, NY, JUL 26-30, 2010 Meteorit Soc; International audience; Tungsten and silver isotope systematics strongly suggest that iron meteorites are very old differentiated objects. However, the limiting precision on W and Ag ages of, respectively, ~2 and ~4 Ma, and the current range of 1.6 Ma on the age of CAIs used to anchor both the 182Hf-182W and 107Pb- 107Ag chronometers, stand in the way of finding out precisely how old. Contrary to extinct radioactivities, the Pb-Pb chronometer defines an absolute time scale rendering it independent of CAI age constraints. In addition, the precision of the Pb-Pb chronometer is potentially better than 1 Ma, even for ages as old as that of the Solar System. We therefore set out to date troilite inclusions in Muoniolusta, an iron meteorite belonging to the IVA group. The extreme depletion in volatile elements relative to chondrites of this group of rocks [1] holds promise of high U/Pb ratios that over time would produce Pb radiogenic enough to allow for precise and accurate dating of its host.

International audience; Recent diving with the JAMSTEC Shinkai 6500 manned submersible in the Mariana fore arc southeast of Guam has discovered that MORB-like tholeiitic basalts crop out over large areas. These ''fore-arc basalts'' (FAB) underlie boninites and overlie diabasic and gabbroic rocks. Potential origins include eruption at a spreading center before subduction began or eruption during near-trench spreading after subduction began. FAB trace element patterns are similar to those of MORB and most Izu-Bonin-Mariana (IBM) back-arc lavas. However, Ti/V and Yb/V ratios are lower in FAB reflecting a stronger prior depletion of their mantle source compared to the source of basalts from mid-ocean ridges and back-arc basins. Some FAB also have higher concentrations of fluid-soluble elements than do spreading center lavas. Thus, the most likely origin of FAB is that they were the first lavas to erupt when the Pacific Plate began sinking beneath the Philippine Plate at about 51 Ma. The magmas were generated by mantle decompression during near-trench spreading with little or no mass transfer from the subducting plate. Boninites were generated later when the residual, highly depleted mantle melted at shallow levels after fluxing by a water-rich fluid derived from the sinking Pacific Plate. This magmatic stratigraphy of FAB overlain by transitional lavas and boninites is similar to that found in many ophiolites, suggesting that ophiolitic assemblages might commonly originate from near-trench volcanism caused by subduction initiation. Indeed, the widely dispersed Jurassic and Cretaceous Tethyan ophiolites could represent two such significant subduction initiation events.
