Abstract

Circularly polarized light is a fundamental tool in magnetic studies, notably for magnetization dynamics. It is less common in magneto-optics to exploit the orbital angular momentum (OAM) of value ℓ carried by light beams possessing a helical wavefront. After finding many applications in the visible range, recently OAM pulses with ultra-short duration and XUV wavelengths became available, widening the range of experiments that can be envisaged. We modelled the interaction of an XUV OAM beam with non-uniform magnetic structures, showing that the far field scattered intensity profile encodes the symmetry of the magnetic structure in a way that depends on the sign and value of ℓ. In analogy with magnetic circular dichroism, this effect, named magnetic helicoidal dichroism (MHD), can be observed by inverting the sign of either the orbital momentum or of the magnetization. We obtained experimental evidence of MHD by measuring ℓ-dependent resonant scattering from a magnetic vortex. The results of recent complementary experiments match well the theoretical predictions, confirming the potential of the new toolset provided by MHD for studying the laser-triggered ultrafast dynamics of complex magnetic materials.

Abstract

International audience; We report on the development and implementation of methodologies dedicated to soft X-ray imaging by coherent scattering in reflection mode. Two complementary approaches are tested, based on Fourier transform holography and on ptychography. A new method for designing holographic masks has been developed. Our results represent a feasibility test and highlight the potential and limitations of imaging in reflection mode. Reflectivity is less efficient than transmission at soft X-ray wavelengths, hampering the acquisition of good quality images. Nonetheless, it has the potential to image a wider set of samples, notably those that are not transparent to soft X-rays. Although the images obtained so far are of modest quality, these results are extremely encouraging for continuing the development of coherent soft X-ray imaging in reflection mode.

Abstract

We present and discuss the role of nanoparticles size and stoichiometry over the local atomic environment of nanostructured VOx films. The samples have been characterized in situ using X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy identifying the stoichiometry-dependent fingerprints of disordered atomic arrangement. In vanadium oxides, the ligand atoms arrange according to a distorted octahedral geometry depending on the oxidation state, e.g. trigonal distortion in V2O3 and tetragonal distortion in bulk VO2. We demonstrate, taking VO2 as a case study, that as a consequence of the nanometric size of the nanoparticles, the original ligands symmetry of the bulk is broken resulting in the coexistence of a continuum of distorted atomic conformations. The resulting modulation of the electronic structure of the nanostructured VOx as a function of the oxygen content reveals a stoichiometry-dependent increase of disorder in the ligands matrix. This work shows the possibility to produce VOx nanostructured films accessing new disordered phases and provides a unique tool to investigate the complex matter.

Abstract

International audience; We exploit echo-enabled harmonic generation (EEHG) to produce fully coherent free-electron laser (FEL) pulses at soft-x-ray wavelengths and shape their spectrotemporal content. In an EEHG FEL, the longitudinal phase space of the relativistic electron beam that amplifies light is precisely tailored using two external seed lasers and two magnetic chicanes. We show that the spectrotemporal properties of the emitted radiation can be controlled by tuning the bandwidth, linear frequency chirp, and intensity of one of the seed lasers. The experimental data are supported by analytical and numerical models. Our results open a pathway toward coherent control of quantum processes at short wavelengths in the fields of applied physics, chemistry and biology, where manipulating the radiation spectrum is essential. The ability to precisely control the spectrotemporal content of intense, short-wavelength FEL pulses and the low sensitivity of the radiation to electron-beam imperfections make the technique an ideal candidate for use in chirped-pulse amplification schemes.

Abstract

International audience; We investigate the orthorhombic distortion and the structural dynamics of epitaxial MnAs layers on GaAs(001) using static and time-resolved x-ray diffraction. Laser-induced intensity oscillations of Bragg reflections allow us to identify the optical phonon associated with orthorhombic distortion and to follow its softening along the path towards an undistorted phase of hexagonal symmetry. The frequency of this mode falls in the THz range, in agreement with recent calculations. Incomplete softening suggests that the $\beta-\gamma$ transformation deviates from a purely second-order displacive transition.

Abstract

An understanding of collective effects is of fundamental importance for the design and optimisation of the performance of modern accelerators. In particular, the design of an accelerator with strict requirements on the beam quality, such as a free electron laser (FEL), is highly dependent on a correspondence between simulation, theory and experiments in order to correctly account for the effect of coherent synchrotron radiation (CSR), and other collective effects. A traditional approach in accelerator simulation codes is to utilise an analytic one-dimensional approximation to the CSR force. We present an extension of the 1D CSR theory in order to correctly account for the CSR force at the entrance and exit of a bending magnet. A limited range of applicability to this solution, in particular in bunches with a large transverse spot size or offset from the nominal axis, is recognised. More recently developed codes calculate the CSR effect in dispersive regions directly from the Lienard-Wiechert potentials, albeit with approximations to improve the computational time. A new module of the General Particle Tracer (GPT) code was developed for simulating the effects of CSR, and benchmarked against other codes. We experimentally demonstrate departure from the commonly used 1D CSR theory for more extreme bunch length compression scenarios at the FERMI FEL facility. Abstract

We have investigated by time-resolved X-ray diffraction the manganese arsenide structure dynamics in MnAs/GaAs (001) epitaxial films, when the $\alpha \to \beta $ magnetostructural phase transition is triggered by an ultra-fast optical laser pulse. Understanding the photo-induced phase transition dynamics is relevant for applications of MnAs/GaAs (001) as a magnetically active template in laser-induced magnetization switching processes. The main goal of our experiment is to determine the timescales of the structural changes that are likely to play a role in laser-driven magnetization reversal.

It was shown recently that the Fe magnetization reversal in the Fe/MnAs/GaAs(001) epitaxial system, attained by temperature control of the regular stripe pattern of the MnAs ?- and ?-phases, can also be driven by an ultrashort optical laser pulse. In the present time-resolved scattering experiment, we address the dynamics of the MnAs ?/? self-organized stripe pattern induced by a 100 fs optical laser pulse, using as a probe the XUV radiation from the FERMI free-electron laser. We observe a loss in the diffraction intensity from the ordered ?/? stripes that occurs at two characteristic timescales in the range of ~10-12 and ~10-10 s. We associate the first intensity drop with ultrafast electron-lattice energy exchange processes within the laser-MnAs interaction volume and the second with thermal diffusion towards the MnAs/GaAs interface. With the support of model calculations, the observed dynamics are interpreted in terms of the formation of a laterally homogeneous MnAs overlayer, the thickness of which evolves in time, correlating the MnAs microstructure dynamics with the Fe magnetization response.

Abstract

International audience; We studied the temperature and field dependence of the magnetization in a Co/FeRh/MgO(001) film patterned into a matrix of sub-µm sized rectangles, using element selective resonant scattering of polarized soft x-rays. We show that it is possible to reverse partially the magnetization of the Co layer in a thermal cycle that crosses the FeRh antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic transition. Our results support the interest of patterned Co/FeRh films and their potential for achieving temperature induced magnetization switching.

Abstract

3rd SPIE Conference on Advances in X-Ray Free-Electron Lasers Instrumentation, Prague, CZECH REPUBLIC, APR 13-16, 2015; International audience; Magnetization control without applying magnetic fields has potential for applications in sensors and devices. In Fe/MnAs/GaAs(001), the Fe magnetization can be modified by acting on the MnAs microstructure via temperature control, without applying external magnetic fields. Here we use an optical laser pulse to vary the local temperature and an x-ray free-electron laser pulse to probe the induced magnetic and structural dynamics in a time-resolved resonant scattering experiment, both pulses having similar to 100 fs duration. Modifications of the MnAs microstructure take place within a few ps, followed by a slower dynamics driven by thermal diffusion. We show that a single optical laser pulse can reverse the Fe magnetization locally, the process being driven not by the fast modifications of the MnAs structure, but rather by its slower return to equilibrium.

Abstract

International audience; Spintronic devices currently rely on magnetization control by external magnetic fields or spin-polarized currents. Developing temperature-driven magnetization control has potential for achieving enhanced device functionalities. Recently, there has been much interest in thermally induced magnetisation switching (TIMS), where the temperature control of intrinsic material properties drives a deterministic switching without applying external fields. TIMS, mainly investigated in rare-earth–transition-metal ferrimagnets, has also been observed in epitaxial Fe/MnAs/GaAs(001), where it stems from a completely different physical mechanism. In Fe/MnAs temperature actually modifies the surface dipolar fields associated with the MnAs magnetic microstructure. This in turn determines the effective magnetic field acting on the Fe overlayer. In this way one can reverse the Fe magnetization direction by performing thermal cycles at ambient temperatures. Here we use element selective magnetization measurements to demonstrate that various magnetic configurations of the Fe/MnAs/GaAs(001) system are stabilized predictably by acting on the thermal cycle parameters and on the presence of a bias field. We show in particular that the maximum temperature reached during the cycle affects the final magnetic configuration. Our findings show that applications are possible for fast magnetization switching, where local temperature changes are induced by laser excitations.

Abstract

International audience; Ring-shaped multilayered sub-micron dots have potential for the development of non-volatile multi-bit devices. We show that a Co/Cu/FeNi asymmetric ring can take four distinct remanent magnetic states, each one stabilized by applying a magnetic field pulse along one of four in-plane orthogonal directions. We use element selective x-ray holography for imaging the Co magnetic configuration following a magnetic pulse. Micro-magnetic simulations support our experimental findings; they also provide an estimate of the system magnetization dynamics, setting out the conditions for further time-resolved experiments.

International audience; The two single-pass, externally seeded free-electron lasers (FELs) of the FERMI user facility are designed around Apple-II-type undulators that can operate at arbitrary polarization in the vacuum ultraviolet-to-soft x-ray spectral range. Furthermore, within each FEL tuning range, any output wavelength and polarization can be set in less than a minute of routine operations. We report the first demonstration of the full output polarization capabilities of FERMI FEL-1 in a campaign of experiments where the wavelength and nominal polarization are set to a series of representative values, and the polarization of the emitted intense pulses is thoroughly characterized by three independent instruments and methods, expressly developed for the task. The measured radiation polarization is consistently >90% and is not significantly spoiled by the transport optics; differing, relative transport losses for horizontal and vertical polarization become more prominent at longer wavelengths and lead to a non-negligible ellipticity for an originally circularly polarized state. The results from the different polarimeter setups validate each other, allow a cross-calibration of the instruments, and constitute a benchmark for user experiments.

Abstract

International audience; We use element-resolved IR-pump/extreme ultraviolet-probe experiments to disentangle the ultrafast interplay of the magnetic sublattices of an ordered crystalline magnetic alloy. As a paradigmatic example, we investigate the case of the FeRh alloy, which shows a delayed response for the different components. Furthermore, a detailed time-resolved magneto-optic study shows that the data can be analyzed by only assuming Elliot-Yafet-like scattering, as the underlying mechanism for ultrafast demagnetization, resulting in an unexpected nonmonotonic dependence of the spin-flip rate, as a function of quenching.

Abstract

Exploring the dynamics of matter driven to extreme non-equilibrium states by an intense ultrashort X-ray pulse is becoming reality, thanks to the advent of free-electron laser technology that allows development of different schemes for probing the response at variable time delay with a second pulse. Here we report the generation of two-colour extreme ultraviolet pulses of controlled wavelengths, intensity and timing by seeding of high-gain harmonic generation free-electron laser with multiple independent laser pulses. The potential of this new scheme is demonstrated by the time evolution of a titanium-grating diffraction pattern, tuning the two coherent pulses to the titanium M-resonance and varying their intensities. This reveals that an intense pulse induces abrupt pattern changes on a time scale shorter than hydrodynamic expansion and ablation. This result exemplifies the essential capabilities of the jitter-free multiple-colour free-electron laser pulse sequences to study evolving states of matter with element sensitivity., Free-electron lasers are a powerful new tool for studying properties and transient states of matter. Here, the authors use a novel seed scheme for generation of two XUV laser pulses of controlled wavelength and time separation that enables access to ultrafast phenomena with elemental sensitivity.

Abstract

International audience; We address the role of lateral confinement in determining the micromagnetic structure of small objects featuring perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. We have imaged the spatial distribution of magnetic domains in Co/Pd multilayered objects by x-ray holography in transmission mode, a technique based on resonant coherent scattering of polarized x rays. In addition to high spatial resolution and magnetic sensitivity, x-ray holography features chemical selectivity and probes the entire bulk of the magnetic sample. By analyzing and comparing images of several magnetic objects (squares and rectangles with 0.4-3-mu m lateral sizes) that underwent the same preparation procedure and magnetic history, we highlight the influence of the object shape and of its orientation with respect to an external field in determining the remanent magnetic microstructure. The discussion of our results is backed by micromagnetic calculations.

IRMA-2 is a UHV set-up for elastic and coherent scattering experiments developed at the SEXTANTS beamline of the SOLEIL synchrotron. Applications will be in the field of solid state physics, with emphasis on the investigation of the magnetic properties of artificially structured materials.

Abstract

We present a method for imaging magnetic domains via x-ray Fourier transform holography at linearly polarized sources. Our approach is based on the separation of holographic mask and sample and on the Faraday rotation induced on the reference wave. We compare images of perpendicular magnetic domains obtained with either linearly or circularly polarized x-rays and discuss the relevance of this method to future experiments at free-electron laser and high-harmonic-generation sources. Abstract

International audience; Scattering of 130 nm radiation with 100 fs pulse length was used to monitor the alpha/beta-striped microstructure in MnAs/GaAs(001), after a 390 nm 5 mJcm(-2) pump pulse. A strong reduction of the Bragg peak intensity, corresponding to a widening of the beta-stripes, takes place with a characteristic time of 15 ps. These results are relevant within the context of using MnAs/GaAs(001) as a template for the growth of ferromagnetic films, whose magnetization direction can be controlled by modifying the template temperature. Abstract

International audience; We show that the magnetization direction of a thin Fe film can be fully reversed in a thermal cycle of a few degrees close to room temperature, without making use of an external magnetic field. This result is obtained by depositing the Fe film on MnAs/GaAs(001), which displays a temperature-controlled self-organized pattern of submicron-wide stripes, alternating ferromagnetic and nonmagnetic phases. The temperature-dependent dipolar fields generated by this magnetically active template can be used to control the magnetization of the Fe overlayer.
