1. Towards a new task model for merging control theory and real-time scheduling problems

Abstract: International audience; Existing task models for cyber-physical systems have been proposed to merge the requirements associated to the stability of control tasks managing physical components, and to the schedulability of these tasks. Nevertheless, these models stay to a high level without covering concerns like the data and/or precedence constraints between different control tasks as well as non-control tasks, the impact of period variation between dependent control tasks and the impact of data constraints on the execution times of control tasks. Our current work concentrates on discussing properties of a new task model in order to cover these concerns.

Abstract: Real-time systems are a set of programs, a scheduling policy and a system architecture, constrained by timing requirements. Most of daily embedded devices are real-time systems, e.g. airplanes, cars, trains, spatial probes, etc. The time required by a program for its end-to-end execution is called its response time. Usually, upper-bounds of response times are computed in order to provide safe deadline miss probabilities. In this paper, we propose a suited re-parametrization of the inverse Gaussian mixture distribution adapted to response times of real-time systems and the estimation of deadline miss probabilities. Abstract: International audience; In this paper, we present our ongoing work on verification activities of the software used in a safety-critical embedded system dedicated to autonomous vehicles. These activities are focused on the use of formal methods for the verification of functional properties on the embedded code, and statistical methods for the analysis of its Worst-Case Execution Time (WCET). The project's goal is to address some technical barriers of software verification that will impact the safety demonstration of future autonomous driving systems. These barriers are challenging because of the high complexity of an embedded hardware and software, and appeal for methods and tools reaching the highest level of rigorousness.

Abstract: International audience; This paper presents the design and analysis of a data science competition on a problem of time series regression from aeronautics data. For the purpose of performing predictive maintenance, aviation companies seek to create aircraft "numerical twins", which are programs capable of accurately predicting strains at strategic positions in various body parts of the aircraft. Given a number of input parameters (sensor data) recorded in sequence during the flight, the competition participants had to predict output values (gauges), also recorded sequentially during test flights, but not recorded during regular flights. The competition data included hundreds of complete flights. It was a code submission competition with complete blind testing of algorithms. The results indicate that such a problem can be effectively solved with gradient boosted trees, after preprocessing and feature engineering. Deep learning methods did not prove as efficient. Abstract: Time critical embedded systems usually consist of a set of periodic data dependentreal-time tasks issued from a functional specification achieved with a block diagram language. Al-though non-preemptive real-time scheduling is safer than preemptive real-time scheduling in a timecritical context, preemptive real-time scheduling may provide better scheduling ratio. However,this better scheduling ratio comes with a cost related to the preemption, and a non precise determi-mation of this cost can prevent to satisfy real-time constraints. In this paper we propose an offlineschedulability analysis for a set of data dependent periodic tasks which precisely accounts for thepreemption and scheduler cost. This analysis produces a scheduling table that is exploited by atime triggered offline scheduler. We show that this scheduler, implemented on an ARM Cortex-M4bare metal uniprocessor for which the preemption and scheduler cost is precisely determined, isable to schedule correctly a set of tasks that can miss some deadlines if the preemption and sched-uler cost is incorrectly determined. Therefore, such offline scheduling and scheduler approach isperfectly suited for time critical embedded systems.; Les systèmes temps réel critiques consistent en général en un ensemble de tâches périodiques avec des dépendances de données issu d’une spécification fonctionnelle réalisée à l’aide d’un langage de type schéma bloc. Bien que l’ordonnancement temps réel non préemptif soit plus sûr que l’ordonnancement temps réel préemptif dans un contexte critique, l’ordonnancement temps réel préemptif peut avoir de meilleurs taux d’ordonnancement. Cependant, cela a pour conséquence un coût associé à la préemption. Ainsi, la non prise en compte précise de ce coût peut empêcher de satisfaire les contraintes temps réel. Dans ce papier nous proposons une analyse d’ordonnançabilité pour un ensemble de tâches avec des dépendances de données qui prend en compte précisément le coût de la préemption et de l’ordonnanceur. Cette approche produit une table d’ordonnancement qui est exploitée par un ordonnanceur hors ligne déclanché par le temps. Nous montrons que cet ordonnanceur, implanté sur un monoprocesseur nu ARM Cortex-M4 pour lequel le coût de la préemption et de l’ordonnanceur est précisément déterminé, est capable d’ordonnancer correctement un ensemble de tâches dont certaines peuvent rater leur échéance si ce coût n’est pas correctement déterminé. Ainsi, cette approche hors ligne d’ordonnancement et d’ordonnanceur est parfaitement adaptée pour les systèmes temps réel critiques.

Abstract: International audience; Technologies within embedded real-time systems are continuously evolving making them intelligent; at some point they can achieve targeted functions autonomously. Such systems are extended with capability of sensing the surrounding environment and deciding on their own. In addition to the feasible scheduling policy, the correctness of such decisions highly depends on the quality of the used input data. Thereby, the data management within such systems must fulfill some properties in order to guarantee their correct functioning. In this paper we address the problem of data temporal correlation and validity when the system scheduling properties are defined. We present preliminary results on expected properties of the architectures and underline future work.

Abstract: International audience; Statistical approaches have been recently received increased effort from the real-time community. While taking into account that worst case scenarios are rare events, the statistical approaches may decrease considerable the pessimism of a real-time analysis. In this paper we present first results on the statistical estimation of inter-core communications on a multicore platform. Our preliminary results are based on the utilization of the Extreme Value Theory and they are promising as they allow to detect insufficient observations of the communications.

Abstract: International audience; Power consumption and the ever-increasing service demand are key issues that real-time embedded systems are facing nowadays. Approaches based on Dynamic Voltage and Frequency Scaling (DVFS) are capable of reducing the energy consumed by processors while still guaranteeing real-time constraints. In this paper we present short-comes on the state-of-the-art techniques that need to be leveraged in order to be more effective when reducing energy consumption: our experimental results clearly show that tasks' execution time is not proportional to processor speed, and that DVFS techniques could also be applied on other components like bus and memory without compromising time constraints. We also discuss the applicability of real-time probabilistic systems and DVFS, and argue that by adopting a frequency-aware model, we can (i) capture more detailed behaviors of tasks w.r.t. processor speeds and (ii) apply DVFS techniques to gain in energy consumption.

Abstract: This survey covers probabilistic timing analysis techniques for real-time systems. It reviews and critiques the key results in the field from its origins in 2000 to the latest research published up to the end of August 2018. The survey provides a taxonomy of the different methods used, and a classification of existing research. A detailed review is provided covering the main subject areas: static probabilistic timing analysis, measurement-based probabilistic timing analysis, and hybrid methods. In addition, research on supporting mechanisms and techniques, case studies, and evaluations is also reviewed. Abstract: International audience; Automotive systems are composed of embedded applications which are continuously exchanging real-time data. Exchanged data are then propagated within a list of applications involved at different rates in the definition of a function. Different rates of executions for the applications provoke over-and/or under-sampling of data and the age of the data has an obvious impact on the driving decisions. Ensuring that the appropriate data are consumed by an application motivates to maintain the freshness or the temporal validity of real-time data. In this paper we propose a method calculating the freshness of the data for real-time systems where multi-rate sampling of data is considered.

Abstract: International audience; The Worst-Case Execution Time (WCET) is a critical parameter describing the largest value for the execution time of programs. Even though such a parameter is very hard to attain, it is essential as part of guaranteeing a real-time system meets its timing requirements. The complexity of modern hardware has increased the challenges of statically analysing the WCET and reduced the reliability of purely measured the WCET. This has led to the emergence of probabilistic WCETs (pWCETs) analysis as a viable technique. The low probability of appearance of large execution times of a program has motivated the utilization of rare events theory like Extreme Value Theory (EVT). As pWCET estimation based on EVT has matured as a discipline, a number of open challenges have become apparent when applying the existing approaches. Our paper enumerates key challenges while establishing a state of the art of EVT-based pWCET estimation methods.

Abstract: International audience; The classical model of a real-time system consists of a number of tasks, each of which has an execution time which is upper bounded by a constant, referred to as the Worst-Case Execution Time (WCET). Further, jobs of each task execute periodically or sporadically, subject to some minimum inter-arrival time. Task execution is controlled by a real-time scheduler that determines, at any given time, which of the ready jobs the processor will execute. For such a model, schedulability analysis provides an a priori mathematical verification indicating whether or not all of the jobs of each task can be guaranteed to meet their deadlines under the particular scheduling policy used. This analysis is typically achieved by determining the worst-case scenario which leads to the the worst-case response time (from the release to the completion of any job of the task), calculating the worst-case response time, and comparing it with the task’s deadline. Probabilistic real-time systems differ from this classical model in two main ways. Firstly, at least one parameter of the tasks (e.g. execution time) is modeled as a random variable, i.e. described by a probability distribution. Secondly, rather than requiring an absolute guarantee that all deadlines must be met, timing constraints are specified in terms of a threshold on the acceptable probability of a deadline miss for each task. This chapter focuses on research into scheduling and specifically schedulability analysis for probabilistic real-time systems.

We compare this analysis to the equivalent deterministic methods, highlighting the performance gains that can be obtained by utilising more detailed information about worst-case execution time estimates described in terms of probability distributions.

Abstract: International audience; During the last twenty years different design solutions have been proposed for time critical embeddedsystems through pessimistic estimation of performances of the processors (thus increased costs) whileusing average time behavior processors. Abstract: International audience; The arrival of modern and more complex processors (e.g., use of caches, multi-and many-core processors) increases the timing variability of tasks, i.e., the worst case execution time (WCET) is becoming significantly larger, while the probability of appearance of a worst case execution time is extremely low. Approaches taking into account this probability have been the topic of last years research by defining the probabilistic worst case execution time of a task as a probabilistic bound on all execution time scenarios. Existing measurement-based approaches consider the execution of the tasks in isolation and our contribution provides hints for accounting OS costs.

Abstract: International audience; During the last years the arrival of multi-core processors or many-core processors as well as the increased complexity of programs have made more difficult the estimation of the worst case execution times (WCETs) of programs. The existing methods may produce estimates that are too pessimistic for some systems. As result new analyses based on probabilities and statistics have appeared to cope with this complexity by taking into account the fact that large values of WCET may have low probability of appearance. The first paper introducing probabilistic distributions for the description of execution times of tasks had associated to large values of execution times low probabilities [7] as illustrated in Figure 1. Different papers propose since methods to obtain such distributions. In [3] the authors provide a framework for obtaining the probabilistic execution times (pETs) of a program. Another method for estimating a pWCET bound in the presence of permanent faults in instruction caches was introduced in [6]. Papers like [4, 9] propose the estimation of pWCET using extreme value theory. Such theory is applied in [2] to platforms with randomized timing behavior and an associated avionics case study is presented in [8]. Only for this type of architecture, to our best knowledge, it is provided a proof that a large value of an execution time of a program is a rare event [1]. Figure 1: Distribution of execution times 2 Open Problem In practice, it is noticeable that the higher the measured execution time is, the smaller its probability of occurrence is. In reality, the WCET is not easy to measure, and the analysis tools can either overestimate the WCET (static analysis), or underestimate it (taking in consideration only measurements), or predict it with a certain probability of occurrence (measurement-based probabilistic timing analyses). Figure 2 shows a description of the currently common accepted relation between observed execution times, WCET, etc [5]. As stated in the introduction associating low probability of appearance to large values of pETs was proved valid in the context of cache randomized architectures. Abstract: In Chapter 1 we present our contributionto the scheduling of real-time systems on multiprocessor platforms. We start thechapter by providing an exhaustive list of all results we proposed on this topic andthen we detail two contributions: the predictability results and the schedulabilityanalysis. We present the proofs of these results as their details are important.The first result on predictability is a corrected and extended version of previousresults from [38]. The results on schedulability analysis provide a methodology forfeasibility tests based on intervals.In Chapter 2 we present our contribution to the definition and the analysis ofprobabilistic real-time systems. We start the chapter by providing an exhaustivelist of all results we proposed on this topic and then we detail two contributions.The first contribution concerns the proposition of probabilistic worst-case reasoningwithin response time analysis of systems with multiple probabilistic parameters.The second contribution concerns the estimation of probabilistic worst-case executiontimes and its relation to rare events theory. It indicates that the real-timecommunity should use the mathematical results on the tails of the probability distributions.In Chapter 3 we present the perspectives of our results and the vision of howthese results will modify the real-time community that needs to face data delugeand increased connectivity with less critical systems that will coexist within onelarger system built following a mixed-critical model.

Abstract: International audience; Probabilistic analysis are considered nowadays an interesting solution for real-time systems as the probabilityof appearance of worst-case values is small (10−45 per hour of functioning) compared to the acceptedprobability of failure (10−9 per hour of functioning for the highest safety level in avionics). In order to takeinto account this information, Burns and Edgar [1] have introduced the notion of probabilistic worst caseexecution time (pWCET). The pWCET of a program is bounding the probability that the execution timeof that program exceeds a given value. A possible method to estimate the pWCET is based on measurementsand the associated analysis is called measurement-based probabilistic timing analysis (MBPTA). Suchmethod has been proposed by Cucu-Grosjean et al. [2] and the obtained estimate is sensitive to the observedexecution times. To our best knowledge this dependence of MBPTA on the observations is an open problem.Within this paper we propose a first solution based on a mixed model using genetic algorithms.

Abstract: International audience; Since the early work of Lehoczky on real-time queuing theory, probabilistic approaches have addressed many aspects of real-time systems. This presentation concentrates on the migration of probabilistic methods from modelling soft real-time systems to analysing hard real-time systems. The history of this migration is outlined over the last two decades, advancing under different banners including stochastic, probabilistic and statistical analysis. Here, the shift from the deterministic analysis of single upper bound values to more expressive forms using probability distributions has undermined or modified many classical real-time results, such as the optimality of Rate Monotonic assignment. Two common misconceptions concerning probabilistic real-time systems are discussed: independence and the identical distribution. These properties are less restrictive than is widely appreciated and together with probabilistic worst-case reasoning form the basis of the main results currently proposed for hard real-time systems. The presentation summarises recent state-of-the-art research into probabilistic real-time systems, and concludes with the main open challenges in this area.

Abstract: This paper is proposing a general periodicity result concerning any deterministic and memoryless scheduling algorithm (including non-work-conserving algorithms), for any context, on identical multiprocessor platforms. By context we mean the hardware architecture (uniprocessor, multicore), as well as task constraints like critical sections, precedence constraints, self-suspension, etc. Since the result is based only on the releases and deadlines, it is independent from any other parameter. Note that we do not claim that the given interval is minimal, but it is an upper bound for any cycle of any feasible schedule provided by any deterministic and memoryless scheduler.

Abstract: Static Timing Analysis is the state-of-the-art practice to ascertain the timing behaviour of current-generation real-time embedded systems. The adoption of more complex hardware to respond to the increasing demand for computing power in next-generation systems exacerbates some of the limitations of Static Timing Analysis. In particular, the effort of acquiring (1) detail information on the hardware to develop an accurate model of its execution latency as well as (2) knowledge of the timing behaviour of the program in the presence of varying hardware conditions, such as those dependent on the history of previously executed instructions. We call these problems the Timing Analysis Walls. In this vision-statement paper we present Probabilistic Timing Analysis, a novel approach to the analysis of the timing behaviour of next-generation real-time embedded systems. We show how Probabilistic Timing Analysis attacks the Timing Analysis Walls; we then illustrate the mathematical foundations on which this method is based and the challenges we face in the effort of efficiently implementing it. We also present experimental evidence that shows how Probabilistic Timing Analysis reduces the extent of knowledge about the execution platform required to produce probabilistically-safe and tight WCET estimations.
