Abstract

As the global health crisis unfolded throughout the world, many academic conferences moved online in 2020. This move has been hailed as a positive step towards inclusivity in its attenuation of economic, physical and legal barriers and effectively enabled many individuals who have traditionally been underrepresented to join and participate. A number of studies have outlined how moving online made it possible to gather a more global community and has increased opportunities for individuals with various constraints, e.g. caregiving responsibilities. Yet, the mere existence of online conferences is unfortunately no guarantee that everyone can attend and participate meaningfully. In fact, many elements of an online conference are still significant barriers to truly diverse participation: the tools used can be inaccessible for some individuals; the scheduling choices can favour some geographical locations; the setup of the conference can provide more visibility to well-established researchers and reduce opportunities for early career researchers. While acknowledging the benefits of an online setting, especially for individuals who have traditionally been underrepresented or excluded, we recognize that fostering social justice requires inclusivity to actively be centered in every aspect of online conference design.Here, we draw from the literature and from our own experiences to identify practices that purposefully encourage a diverse community to: attend, participate in, and lead online conferences. Reflecting on how to design more inclusive online events is especially important as multiple scientific organizations have announced that they will continue offering an online version of their event when in-person conferences can resume.

Abstract

Empathetic verbal feedback from others has been shown to alleviate the intensity of experimental pain. To investigate the brain changes associated with this effect, we conducted 3T-fMRI measurements in 30 healthy subjects who received painful thermal stimuli on their left hand while overhearing empathetic, neutral or unempathetic comments, supposedly made by experimenters, via headsets. Only the empathetic comments significantly reduced pain intensity ratings. A whole-brain BOLD analysis revealed that both Empathetic and Unempathetic conditions significantly increased the activation of the right anterior insular and posterior parietal cortices to pain stimuli, while activations in the posterior cingulate cortex and precuneus (PCC/Prec) were significantly stronger during Empathetic compared to Unempathetic condition. BOLD activity increased in the DLPFC in the Empathetic condition and decreased in the PCC/Prec and vmPFC in the Unempathetic condition. In the Empathetic condition only, functional connectivity increased significantly between the vmPFC and the insular cortex. These results suggest that modulation of pain perception by empathetic feedback involves a set of high-order brain regions associated with autobiographical memories and self-awareness, and relies on interactions between such supra-modal structures and key nodes of the pain system.

Abstract

We present Visbrain, a Python open-source package that offers a comprehensive visualization suite for neuroimaging and electrophysiological brain data. Visbrain consists of two levels of abstraction: (1) objects which represent highly configurable neuro-oriented visual primitives (3D brain, sources connectivity, etc.) and (2) graphical user interfaces for higher level interactions. The object level offers flexible and modular tools to produce and automate the production of figures using an approach similar to that of Matplotlib with subplots. The second level visually connects these objects by controlling properties and interactions through graphical interfaces. The current release of Visbrain (version 0.4.2) contains 14 different objects and three responsive graphical user interfaces, built with PyQt: Signal, for the inspection of time-series and spectral properties, Brain for any type of visualization involving a 3D brain and Sleep for polysomnographic data visualization and sleep analysis. Each module has been developed in tight collaboration with end-users, i.e., primarily neuroscientists and domain experts, who bring their experience to make Visbrain as transparent as possible to the recording modalities (e.g., intracranial EEG, scalp-EEG, MEG, anatomical and functional MRI). Visbrain is developed on top of VisPy, a Python package providing high-performance 2D and 3D visualization by leveraging the computational power of the graphics card. Visbrain is available on Github and comes with a documentation, examples, and datasets (http://visbrain.org).

Abstract

Study Objectives Paradoxical sleep (PS) has been shown to play an important role in memory, in particular in emotional memory processes. However, the involvement of this particular sleep stage in the systemic consolidation of remote (30 days old) memory has never been tested. We examined whether post-learning PS could play a role in the consolidation of remote fearful memory and in the brain network reorganization that depends on it. Methods Mice were PS-deprived during 6 hours after contextual fear conditioning using an automated method, and their memory was tested either 1 day or 30 days after learning. Brain activity during retrieval was assessed using the immediate early gene Egr1 (Zif 268) as a neuronal marker of activity. Results We found that PS deprivation impaired the recall of remote (30 days)-but not recent (1 day)-memory. We also showed that the superficial layers of the anterior cingulate cortex were significantly less activated during the retrieval of remote memory after PS deprivation. In contrast, after such deprivation, retrieval of remote memory significantly activated several areas involved in emotional processing such as the CA1 area of the ventral hippocampus, the basolateral amygdala and the superficial layers of the ventral orbitofrontal cortex. By performing graph-theoretical analyses, our result also suggests that post-learning PS deprivation could impact the reorganization of the functional connections between limbic areas in order to reduce the level of global activity in this network. Conclusions These findings suggest an important role for PS in the systemic consolidation of remote memory.

Abstract

International audience; The transport sector has an important and increasing role in greenhouse gases emissions, and cost benefit analysis (CBA) of transport projects should give in this regard accurate and objective information. Indeed, many countries have included this concern in their CBA guidelines, but it typically consists simply in adopting an official value per ton of carbon emitted. Does this mean that the issue is correctly treated by CBA? Since “the devil is in the details” this paper reviews key items influencing the quality of CO2 emission valuation, estimating the order of magnitude of their effects and taking into account the nature and degree of imprecision and uncertainty associated with them.

Abstract

International audience; This paper proposes a novel method to detect objects by a mobile robot which adapts to an environment. Such a robot would help human designers of a smart environment to recognize objects in the environment with their attributes, which signi cantly facilitates his/her design. We rst introduce Lifting Complex Wavelet Transform (LCWT) which plays an important role in this work. Since the LCWT has a set of controllable free parameters, we can design the LCWTs with various properties by tuning their parameters. In this paper we construct a set of LCWTs so that they can extract local features from an image by multi-scale. The extracted local features must be robust against several kinds of changes of the image such as shift, scale and rotation. Our method can design these LCWTs by selecting their parameters so that the mobile robot adapts to the environment. Applying the new set of LCWTs to the images captured by the mobile robot in the environment, a local feature database can be constructed. By using this database, we implement an object detection system based on LCWTs on the mobile robot. Effectiveness of our method is demonstrated by several test results using the mobile robot.

Abstract

International audience; The Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) procedure is a very appealing model, but as it becomes more and more used in practice, problems and failures have been observed in the management of many projects. Many of these unfortunate experiences are consequences of errors in the implementation of the procedure, but in other cases, clear errors of conception were the cause. Indeed, there are many ways to structure a PPP and PPP is not the only way to manage an infrastructure scheme. It is thus an important task to provide guidelines on whether to use PPP or other types of procurement and, in case a PPP is preferred, on how to design it. The aim of this chapter is to contribute to this task, trying to combine theoretical knowledge and practical experience. After a review of the variety of economic characteristics of transport infrastructure and their procurement conditions, we recall the reasons that may justify this association of public and private management which is the characteristic of PPP, outlining the limits of using pure private or pure public procurement. Then an analytic process is proposed, screening the parameters which matter most for choosing the PPP procedure among many possible ones, depending on the specificities of the various transport modes. This process gives also indications on key elements for implementing a PPP. Finally, the analytic process proposed is used for a generic analysis of, respectively, the motorways and port sectors, so as to test its practicability and customizing capability for the use of public authorities.

Abstract

International audience; Graph theory allows us to quantify any complex system, e.g., in social sciences, biology or technology, that can be abstractly described as a set of nodes and links. Here we derived human brain functional networks from fMRI measurements of endogenous, low frequency, correlated oscillations in 90 cortical and subcortical regions for two groups of healthy (young and older) participants. We investigated the modular structure of these networks and tested the hypothesis that normal brain aging might be associated with changes in modularity of sparse networks. Newman's modularity metric was maximised and topological roles were assigned to brain regions depending on their specific contributions to intra- and inter-modular connectivity. Both young and older brain networks demonstrated significantly non-random modularity. The young brain network was decomposed into 3 major modules: central and posterior modules, which comprised mainly nodes with few inter-modular connections, and a dorsal fronto-cingulo-parietal module, which comprised mainly nodes with extensive inter-modular connections. The mean network in the older group also included posterior, superior central and dorsal fronto-striato-thalamic modules but the number of intermodular connections to frontal modular regions was significantly reduced, whereas the number of connector nodes in posterior and central modules was increased.
