Abstract

The aim of this paper is to push a step towards the development of a surrogate-assisted methodology for expensive optimization problems that have both a combinatorial and a multiobjective nature. We target pseudo-boolean multiobjective functions, and we provide a comprehensive study on the design of a modular framework integrating three main configurable components. The proposed framework is based on the Walsh basis as a surrogate, and on a decomposition-based evolutionary paradigm for maintaining the solution set. The three considered components are: (i) the inner optimizer used for handling the soconstructed Walsh surrogate, (ii) the selection strategy allowing to decide which solution is to be evaluated by the expensive objectives, and (iii) the strategy used to setup the Walsh order hyper-parameter. Based on a thorough empirical analysis relying on two benchmark problems, namely bi-objective NK-landscapes and UBQP problems, we show the effectiveness of the proposed framework with respect to the available budget in terms of calls to the evaluation function. More importantly, our empirical findings shed more lights on the combined effects of the investigated components on search performance, thus providing a better understanding of the key challenges for designing a successful surrogate-assisted multiobjective combinatorial search process.

Abstract

International audience; A number of surrogate-assisted evolutionary algorithms are being developed for tackling expensive multiobjective optimization problems. On the one hand, a relatively broad range of techniques from both machine learning and multiobjective optimization can be combined for this purpose. Diferent taxonomies exist in order to better delimit the design choices, advantages and drawbacks of existing approaches. On the other hand, assessing the relative performance of a given approach is a diicult task, since it depends on the characteristics of the problem at hand. In this paper, we focus on surrogate-assisted approaches using objective space decomposition as a core component. We propose a reined and ine-grained classiication, ranging from EGO-like approaches to iltering or pre-screening. More importantly, we provide a comprehensive comparative study of a representative selection of state-of-the-art methods , together with simple baseline algorithms. We rely on selected benchmark functions taken from the bbob-biobj benchmarking test suite, that provides a variable range of objective function diiculties. Our empirical analysis highlights the efect of the available budget on the relative performance of each approach, and the impact of the training set and of the machine learning model construction on both solution quality and runtime eiciency.

Abstract

International audience; The emergence of new hybrid and heterogenous multi-GPU multi-CPU large scale platforms offers new opportunities and pauses new challenges when solving difficult optimization problems. This paper targets irregular tree search algorithms in which workload is unpredictable. We propose an adaptive distributed approach allowing to distribute the load dynamically at runtime while taking into account the computing abilities of either GPUs or CPUs. Using Branch-and-Bound and Flowshop as a case study, we deployed our approach using up to 20 GPUs jointly to up to 128 CPUs. Through extensive experiments in different system configurations, we report near optimal speedups, thus providing new insights into how to take full advantage of both GPUs and CPUs power in modern computing platforms.

Abstract

International audience; To deal with dynamic load balancing in large scale distributed systems, we propose to organize computing resources following a logical peer-to-peer overlay and to distribute the load according to the so-defined overlay. We use a tree as a logical structure connecting distributed nodes and we balance the load according to the size of induced subtrees. We conduct extensive experiments involving up to 1000 computing cores and provide a throughout analysis of different properties of our generic approach for two different applications, namely, the standard Unbalanced Tree Search and the more challenging parallel Branch-and-Bound algorithm. Substantial improvements are reported in comparison with the classical random work stealing and two finely tuned application specific strategies taken from the literature.

Abstract

A $\xi$-coloring of a graph $G$ is a coloring of the nodes of $G$ with $\xi$ colors in such a way any two neighboring nodes have different colors. We prove that there exists a $O(\Delta \log n)$ time distributed algorithm computing a $O(\Delta)$-colroing for unit disc graphs under the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR)-based physical model ($\Delta$ is the maximum degree of the graph). We also show that, for a well defined constant $d$, a $d$-hop $O(\Delta)$-coloring allows us to schedule an interference free MAC protocol under the physical SINR constraints. For instance this allows us to prove that any point-to-point message passing algorithm with running time $\tau$ can be simulated in the SINR model in $O(\Delta (\log n + \tau))$ time using messages of well chosen size. All our algorithms are proved to be correct with high probability.

Abstract

In this paper, we study the complexity of computing with mobile agents having small local knowledge. In particular, we show that the number of mobile agents and the amount of local information given initially to agents can significantly influence the time complexity of resolving a distributed problem. Our results are based on a generic scheme allowing to transform a message passing algorithm, running on an $n$-node graph $G$, into a mobile agent one. By generic, we mean that the scheme is independent of both the message passing algorithm and the graph $G$. Our scheme, coupled with a well-chosen clustered representation of the graph, induces $\widetilde{O}(1) ratio between the time complexity of the obtained mobile agent algorithm and the time complexity of the original message passing counterpart, while using $\widetilde{O}(n)$ mobile agents. If only $k$ agents are allowed ($k$ is an integer parameter), then we show that the time ratio is $O(n/\sqrt{k})$. As a consequence, we show that any global labeling function of $G$ can be computed by exactly $n$ mobile agents knowing their $n^{\epsilon}$-neighborhood in $\widetilde{O}(D)$ time, $D$ is the diameter of the graph and $\epsilon$ is an arbitrary small constant. We apply our generic results for the fundamental problem of computing a leader (resp. a BFS tree) under the additional restriction of $\widetilde{O}(1)$ (resp. $\widetilde{O}(n)$) memory bits per agent, and obtain $\widetilde{O}(D)$ time algorithms.

Abstract

Mobile agents are a recent paradigm to facilitate the design and programming of distributed applications. However, whilst their popularity continues to grow, a uniform theory of mobile agent systems is not yet sufficiently elaborated, in comparison with classical models of distributed computation. In this paper we show how to use mobile agents as an alternative model for implementing distributed local computation rules. In doing so, we approach a general and unified framework for local computations which is consistent with the classical theory of distributed computations based on graph relabeling systems.
