Mobilizing citizens for supporting research is a very widespread action in the field of natural sciences and particularly for obtaining data on the location and counting of plant and/or animal species. This practice is much less common for water resource observation.As part of this study, an online Webmapping platform wasdeveloped to collect data (photos, videos, comments, height values...) from citizens on low flow during the summer period in the Cévennes basin of the Gardon (Département du Gard, France). Volunteers were identified according to 3 profiles to supply the platform; (1) the "reader"profile (limnimetric scale reading), (2) the "expert"profile (with whom a precise protocol has been defined) and (3) a more generic profile ("observer") which during his visit to the studied area will bring up a wide range of observations.This approach and the associated platform were tested during the summer of 2018. Technically, the system works and the approach has proven its relevance. The first results are therefore promising even if it will be necessary to be sustainable in order to continue this approach effectively, Mobiliser les citoyens dans une démarche d’appui à la recherche est une action très répandue dans le domainedes sciences de la nature, tout particulièrement pour l’obtention de données sur la localisation et le comptage d’espèces végétales et/ou animales. Cette pratique est beaucoup moins répandue pour l’observation de la ressource en eau.Dans le cadre de cette étude, une plateforme cartographique en ligne a été développée pour recueillir les données acquises (photos, vidéos, commentaires, valeurs de hauteurs d’eau...), sur les basses eaux, par des citoyens,durant la période estivale dans bassin cévenol des Gardons (département du Gard, France). Des volontairesont été identifiés selon troisprofils pour alimenter la plateforme; (1) le profil «lecteur» (lecture d’échelle limnimétrique);(2) le profil «expert» (avec qui un protocole précis a été défini) et (3) un profil plus générique («observateur») qui lors de sa visite sur la zone étudiée fera remonter des observations. Cette démarche et la plateforme associée ont été testées durant l’été2018. Techniquement, le site fonctionne, mais l’approche doit montrersa pertinence. Les premiers résultats sont prometteurs, même s’il sera nécessaire de les inscrire dans la durée pour poursuivre efficacement cette démarche.

International audience; Summary: Topoclimatical modelling of temperature and its application to the French Extreme South-east.Temperature topoclimatical modelling in the thermally homogeneous areas relies on the relation betweentemperature and landscape aspects which command solar radiation receipts during day and cold air accumulationtowards the end of the night. It allows the estimation, out of the Heat Urban Islands, in the areas called “rural”,of a temperature mean gradient according to altitude for each of the main topoclimates (south-facing and northfacing slopes with south and north components, valley bottoms and summits). It is applied to the MediterraneanInterior which, after excluding the coastal land strip, forms the whole extreme south-east of France. So it hasallowed, without being obliged to get identical station lists, to estimate, according to the available data, the areawarming between 1959-65 and 2011-17 for only south-facing slopes and valley bottoms. In both cases, onlydiurnal temperatures mainly increase.; La modélisation topoclimatique de la température dans un espace thermiquement homogène repose sur la relation entre la température et les formes du relief qui commandent la quantité d'énergie solaire reçue le jour et l'accumulation d'air froid en fin de nuit. Elle permet d'estimer, hors des Ilots de chaleur urbains, dans les milieux dits « ruraux », un gradient moyen de température fonction de l'altitude pour chacun des 4 principaux topoclimats (adrets et ubacs à composantes sud et nord, fonds de vallée et sommets). Elle est appliquée à l'Intérieur méditerranéen qui, le liseré littoral étant exclu, compose la totalité de l'Extrême sud-est français. Elle a ainsi permis, sans obligation de listes de stations identiques, d'estimer, en fonction des données disponibles, le réchauffement de cette région entre 1959-65 et 2011-17 pour les seuls adrets et fonds de vallée. Dans les 2 cas ce sont essentiellement les températures diurnes qui augmentent.

Le Groupe Dupont cree en 1971 a Avignon fut une des composantes du renouveau geographique francais des annees 1970. Lance a l’initiative de J.-P. Ferrier et H. Chamussy, et compose de geographes des universites du grand sud-est de la France, il eut pour objectif, a l’origine, l’introduction de la geographie quantitative, deja utilisee par la geographie anglo-americaine, dans leurs recherches. Ses participants, tous issus du milieu universitaire mais soucieux de se tenir loin de toute influence mandarinale, le maintinrent sans rattachement a aucune institution, universitaire ou autre.

International audience; This study extends the previous one on Southern Alps warming since the previous century (Douguédroit, 1917). The same method relying on the difference between Southern facing slopes and Valley bottom data during two periods, 1959-1965 and 2009-2015 has been applied to the area between the Southern Alps and the Mediterranean Sea. This area appeared to be divide between two sub-areas, an inner area cocerned by the same warming as the Southern Alps and a narrow seaside strip under the sea influence which makes it less warm than the inner area during the day and warmer during the night. Such is the climate of the mountain areas along the Mediterranean sea; it is divided into three successive areas from the high altitudes to the sea, mountains, lower atea and seaside.; Cette étude prolonge celle sur le réchauffement des Alpes du sud depuis le siècle dernier (Douguédroit, 2017). La même méthode d'analyse reposant sur la distinction entre données d'adrets et de fonds de vallée et les deux mêmes périodes 1959-65 et 2009-15 a été appliquée à l'espace entre le sud des Alpes et la mer Méditerranée. Cet espace s'est révélé être divisé en 2 sous-espaces : d'une part un espace intérieur caractérisé par le prolongement vers des altitudes moins élevées du climat des Alpes du Sud, donc du même réchauffement, d'autre part un espace littoral méditerranéen influencé par la mer qui le rend moins chaud de jour et plus tiède la nuit que l'intérieur. C'est le modèle climatique des montagnes bordant la mer Méditerranée, une trilogie de climats méditerranéens se succédant en altitude, littoral, intérieur et atténué.

This paper aims at identifying the link between significant rainfall decreases (1950–2000) in the Mediterranean basin and the atmospheric circulation at the 500 hPa level. The months and seasons of the subregions with significant rainfall decrease during this period have been identified previously (Norrant and Douguedroit, Theor Appl Climatol 83(1–4):89–106, 2006): October in the Mediterranean Iberia, March in the Atlantic Iberia, January and winter in Greece, and winter in the Near East. Canonical Correlation Analyses based on the monthly and daily data records from 62 rainfall stations and 138 grid points at the 500 hPa level over a Euro-Atlantic window were first calculated to define the TeleConnection Patterns explaining significant regional rainfall decreases. Then, 500 hPa level weather types (ZWTs) of the rainy days with important or little rainfall associated with each Teleconnection Pattern were identified in each subregion. Rainfall-causing disturbances from the Atlantic reach Iberia directly; some of them are regenerated if they reach the Mediterranean. Other disturbances are generated locally near Greece and the Near East (Meteorological Office in Weather in the Mediterranean I: general meteorology, Her Majesty’s Stationery Office, London, 1962). The relationship between significant rainfall decreases and the corresponding 500 hPa level appears to be a nonlinear phenomenon. In all of the studied subregions, a break during the 1970s separates two subperiods differing significantly from each other. Rainfall decrease is due to the higher frequency of important rainfall ZWTs over low rainfall ZWTs, during the first period, which the opposite is true during the second period. Such an inversion could be partially linked with the prevailing North Atlantic Oscillation-positive phase during the last quarter of the twentieth century.

International audience; This paper aims at comparing the evolution from 1950 to 2010 of the average annual minimum temperatures of 34 stations in the French Mediterranean region with the mean global average temperatures with a significant rise in temperatures between 1950 and 2012 divided into two periods, first a slowly descending one till the 70’s followed by a second ascending up quickly till the end of the century (Stork et al., 2013). The environment of the French stations has been determined from georeferenced documents of different dates. Their linear evolution has been studied from a dual linear regression starting one at the beginning of the period, the other at the end with the aim of determining if it presented a succession of two periods with different evolution separated by a rupture.

International audience; During climate change in the 21st century tree species may not be able to follow the fast shift of their potential distribution area caused by higher temperatures and rainfall decrease. Examples of early warning signs of the deep impact of climate change on mediterranean landscapes are presented. During the 21st century forests stands should be concerned by sharp productivity drop, extensive dieback and likely more numerous wildfires leaving mattorals and steppes gaining ground.

International audience; Model simulations for the end of this century present for the Mediterranean climate a mean temperature increase and a precipitation decrease in all seasons, particularly important in summer. They conclude on a warm season drought more intense and long with could lead to a desertification in the southern Mediterranean areas and a northward shift of all climate types of the Mediterranean region.

International audience; Dans les Cévennes (France) l’augmentation des précipitations moyennes, annuelles, saisonnières et mensuelles (1983-2010) a été étudiée en relation avec l’altitude. Ses corrélations avec non pas les altitudes des stations mais celles des altitudes lissées des crêtes autour des stations sont bonnes, voir très bonnes. Mais la détermination de ces altitudes lissées s’est révélée délicate à cause de la prise en compte d’un emboîtement de facteurs à l’origine de leur définition et de la fixation de l’altitude lissée : à l’échelle régionale le parallélisme de la direction, SE-NW, de l’accroissement de la pente et des flux atmosphériques à l’origine des fortes précipitations, induit, à l’échelle locale, l’orientation préférentielle des crêtes retenues pour le lissage, celle de l’amont. De plus il semble qu’il y ait intérêt à retenir une altitude moyennée sur plusieurs kilomètres plutôt que l’altitude maximale.

International audience; The effect of time scale change by passing from year to season and from season to month has been studied on the space distribution of dry and humid vents in rainfall monthly data of fifteen stations from Kenya (1951-2006). Dry or humide events have been determined by a division into quantiles due to the mostly dissymetric distributions of the data at the three time steps. Dry events are more frequent than very humid ones which are more space coherent yet.; Les données mensuelles des précipitations de quinze stations du Kenya (1951-2006) ont permis une étude de l’effet du changement d’échelle temporelle, par passage de l’année à la saison et ensuite au mois, sur la distribution spatiale des épisodes secs ou humides. La détermination d’un cas sec ou humide a été faite à l’aide des quantiles à cause des distributions pour la plupart très dissymétriques des données aux trois pas de temps. International audience; The precipitation decrease is associated with a little shift in latitude of the jet-stream within the Mediterranean region and a change in the location in longitude of its straight sectors and of the Rossby waves.

International audience; Our research concerns the definition of the notion of river wave in comparison with “flash-flood” and hyper urban “flash-flood”. The three definitions have been done through specific cases: the “flash-flood” in the Argens river basin on the 15th of June 2010, the hyper urban “flash-flood” in Marseille on the 19th September 2000 and the wave in Bab el Oued on the 10th December 2001. Waterproof streets in cities create artificial river-basins working with heavy rainfalls which give birth to hyper urban “flash-floods” running in streets toward low areas. The three cases are presented here in the order of increasing event speed. Only a single wave, with a sudden increaseof the water level has been found, the Bab el Oued one.The vulnerability of these cases has been analysed. It is linked with the material and human frailty of the economic development level of the environment. In each level it is connected also with the environment type, rural or urban, and within the cities according to their location in downtown or in suburbs. Vulnerability is maximal in societies made vulnerable by their history or in industrial societies too self-confident in themselves and of their control on environment. Industrial societies have isolated landplaning from natural environment whose constraints they have forgotten. Exceptional events such as the “flash-flood” which occurred in the Nartuby and Argens basins (Var, France) on the 15th June 2010 require them to remember those constraints.; Notre recherche a porté sur la notion de « vague » fluviale pour bien la définir par rapport à la crue « éclair » et l'hyper crue « éclair » urbaine. Nous avons établis les trois définitions à partir de cas particuliers : la crue « éclair » du réseau de l'Argens (Var, France) le 15 juin 2010, l' hyper crue « éclair » urbaine de Marseille le 19 septembre 2000 et la vague de Bab el Oued le 10 décembre 2001. Ils sont présentés là dans un ordre de rapidité croissante de l'évènement. Parmi eux on ne semble pouvoir être sur que d'un cas de vague, dans le cours d'une crue d'ailleurs, celle de Bab el Oued. Nous avons analysé la vulnérabilité correspondant à ces cas. Elle est associée au niveau de développement du milieu concerné, en développement ou développé, et au sein de chaque niveau aux différences de milieu, rural ou urbain, et dans ce dernier entre centre-ville et banlieue. La vulnérabilité est maximale en quelque sorte aux deux extrémités de la hiérarchie, dans les sociétés peu développées et précarisées par leur histoire d'une part et dans les sociétés développées trop sures d'elles-mêmes et de leur maîtrise sur l'environnement. Les sociétés industrielles qui ont déconnecté l'aménagement du territoire du milieu « naturel » en ont oublié jusqu'à son existence et ses contraintes qui leur sont rappelées par des évènements exceptionnels d'origine naturelle.

The aim of the paper lies in the identification of possible significant linear trends at monthly, seasonal and annual timescales in the Mediterranean during the second half of the 20th century. Monthly and daily records of 63 stations have been used to elaborate several precipitation indices: sum of daily precipitation (SDP) for rainfall >0.1 mm, >10 mm and >95th percentile, of number of rainy days (RD) >0.1 mm and >10 mm and of mean daily precipitation (MDP) >0.1 mm and >10 mm. For each index the stations have been gathered together by Rotated Principal Component Analyses to determine 8 sub-areas which can be considered as identical for all the timescales at the spatial scale of the research. Trends have been estimated from the scores of each eigenvector retained in all RPCAs. They are mainly non existant or non significant decreasing, even if a few monthly trends appear to be significantly diminishing, primarily during winter months, March in the Atlantic region, October in the Mediterranean Spain, December in the Lions and Genoa Gulfs, January, winter and the year in Greece, winter and the year in Italy and winter in the Near East and increasing in April in the two gulfs. Correlation coefficients between SDP>0.1 mm and other indices have been computed: the significant trends seem mainly related to RD>10 mm, which represents a high percentage of the total rainfall amount. Greece is remarkable: SDP>0.1 mm and >10 mm decrease significantly during January, winter, the rainy season and the entire year whereas SDP>95th percentile increases significantly, in accordance with the climatic change scenarios for the end of this century as does the decreasing of the total monthly and seasonal rainfall.

International audience; Nowadays, in the valleys surrounding rivers, the problematic of flood hazard leads to observe familiar functional floodplain objects from a point of vview slightly different from those generally admitted in fluvial dynamics. Interest in microtopography and its variation thus allows us to distinguish up to four beds in a Mediterranean watercourse valley. Currently under development, the hydrogeomorphological method already has produced new results wuith the description of exceptional high waterbeds in some watercourses in Mediterranean France and Tunisia.Building up of numerous Mediterranean functional flood plains began during Classical Antiquity. The high water bed finegrained formations have accumulated during the Middle Ages and the Modern and Contemporary periods. Using isotopic dating, we were able to show that this trend goes on during the second part of the 20th century and should continue in the future. Those formations are mainly produced by soil erosion due to cultural practices.

This study intendes to anticipate heavy rains falls at short term by using electric activity data. It is based on the analysis of very strong precipitations which occurred on September the 19th, 2000 in Marseilles area (Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur).The methodology allows, by a statistical analysis, to determine the trajectories of electric activity and precipitations (calculation of the weighted centres of gravity for each core of cell), and to associate them (using space and temporal queries within GIS) in order to determine anticipation times of the strong rains. The rains are estimated by the radar of Nîmes (A.R.A.M.I.S. network), the data of the weather stations, and the electric activity resulting from SAFIR system are integrated in a GIS, then coupled to a digital elevation model on the Bouches du Rhone department. The images of the radar and the electric activity are carried out with a 5 minutes step.We can observed time delays between rains (radar data) and weather stations measurements. Various methods, integrating these results, are used to predict rainfalls thanks to electric activity: measurement of the temporal shift between the maxima, synchronous and asynchronous common variance, and stabilization times of the trajectories. The predictions obtained by these methods are equivalent. The electric activity (related to precipitations trajectory) allows, within 15-20 minutes (average), to anticipate the precipitations maxima of each episode of rains, estimated by the radar. Although the results are significant, they are limited by few available samples (four couples of trajectories).This work opens an important field of investigation on relevant methodologies to anticipate the exceptional rainfalls in a general framework., Cette étude fondée sur l'analyse du cas des très fortes précipitations du 19 septembre 2000 qui s'est produit en région Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur et en particulier sur la région marseillaise a pour but d'anticiper à courte échéance les fortes pluies à partir de l'activité électrique.La méthodologie mise en place permet, par une analyse statistique, d'une part de déterminer les trajectoires d'activité électrique et de précipitations (calcul des centres de gravité pondérés de chaque noyau de cellule), et d'autre part de les associer (à l'aide de requètes spatiales et temporelles au sein de S.I.G.) afin de déterminer des délais d'anticipation des fortes pluies. Les pluies estimées par le radar de Nîmes-Garons (réseau A.R.A.M.I.S.), les données des stations météorologiques, et l'activité électrique issue du système SAFIR sont intégrées dans un S.I.G. puis couplées à un modèle numérique de terrain sur le département des Bouches-du-Rhône. Le suivi des images radar et de l'activité électrique s'effectue au pas de temps de 5 minutes.Nous avons observé dans notre étude des décalages temporels des pluies par rapport aux mesures des stations météorologiques. Ces résultats ont été intégrés dans différentes méthodes pour l'anticipation des pluies par l'activité électrique (mesure du décalage temporel entre les maximums, variance commune synchrone et asynchrone, délais de mise en place des orientations définitives des trajectoires). L'activité électrique (associée à une trajectoire de précipitations) permet, avec un délai de 15 à 20 minutes en moyenne, d'anticiper les maximums des précipitations de chaque épisode de pluies estimées par le radar. Les résultats bien que significatifs sont limités par le très faible échantillonnage disponible (quatre couples de trajectoires).Les résultats de ce travail ouvrent un champ d'investigation important sur la méthodologie à mettre en place pour la quantification des délais d'anticipations des pluies exceptionnelles dans la région méditerranéenne ou ailleurs.
