Abstract: International audience; Since the end of April 2022, the Perseverance rover has embarked on the Delta Campaignwith the objective to explore the sedimentary delta of Jezero Crater and characterize its stratigraphyand mineral composition. Among the instruments aboard the Rover, SuperCam [1, 2] plays a keyrole in this study thanks to its remote measurement capabilities (spectroscopy and imaging), in particularthe near-infrared reflectance spectroscopy performed by the IRS instrument [3]. This instrument analyzeslight reflected from rocks and soils in the 1.3 – 2.6 μm spectral range and in a field of view of 1.15 mrad,corresponding to an area of about 3.5 mm at 3 m distance. The IRS is thus sensitive to the spectral signaturesof primary and aqueous alteration minerals, enabling the analysis of the compositional diversity of rocks and thus to the study of their formation conditions. Here we summarize a modeling approach of the IRS data to examine diagnostic absorption features.

Abstract: International audience; During the first scientific campaign, Perseverance explored the Jezero crater floor and found two main igneous formations: the basaltic Máaz unit, and Séítah, consisting of an olivine-rich cumulate. Then the rover did a rapid traverse towards the second campaign region, Jezero’s delta. Just before reaching the lowest part of the delta, Perseverance encountered the Séítah formation again, with some variability in the degree of alteration. Here, we use the data obtained by the SuperCam instrument to document the structure and texture of rocks at the transition between Séítah and the delta front, its geochemistry and its primary and secondary mineralogy. Then, we discuss the simi-larities/differences between these rocks and discuss a geological scenario to account for these observations.

Abstract: International audience; In February 2021, the Perseverance rover landed in Jezero crater, Mars. The crater floor was found to be composed of lava flows and cumulate rocks [1-5]. These magmatic rocks appear to have undergone some limited aqueous alteration; however, it is not clear whether this alteration is related to the lacustrine phase of the crater [1,3,6,7].After completing its exploration of the crater floor, Perseverance reached the foot of the Jezero western fan in late April 2022 (sol ~422). Long-distance images acquired earlier in the mission had already confirmed the deltaic nature of the fan [8], which had long been suspected from orbital observations [9,10]. Between April and December 2022, Perseverance investigated the basal layers of the delta at two locations named Hawksbill Gap and Cape Nukshak, which are ~400 m apart [11]. Here, we present an overview of the geo-chemistry and mineralogy of the delta rocks as observed by SuperCam, and show that these rocks record a diver-sity of past aqueous alteration environments.

Abstract: International audience; The Perseverance rover landed in the ancient lakebed of Jezero crater, Mars on February 2021. Here we assess the mineralogy of the rocks, regolith, and dust measured during the first year of the mission on the crater floor, using the visible and near-infrared spectrometer of SuperCam onboard the Perseverance rover. Most of the minerals detected from orbit are present in the bedrock, with olivine-bearing rocks at the bottom of the stratigraphy and high-Ca pyroxene-bearing rocks at the top. This is distinct from the overall low-Ca pyroxene-bearing composition of the watershed of Jezero, and points towards an igneous origin. Alteration mineral phases were detected in most of the rocks analyzed in low proportions, suggesting that aqueous alteration of the crater floor has been spatially widespread, but limited in intensity and/or time. The diverse aqueous mineralogy suggests that the aqueous alteration history of the crater floor consists of at least two stages, to form phyllosilicates and oxyhydroxides, and later sulfates. We interpret their formation in a lake or under deeper serpentinization conditions, and in an evaporative environment, respectively. Spectral similarities of dust with some rock coatings suggest widespread past processes of dust induration under liquid water activity late in the history of Jezero. Analysis of the regolith revealed some local inputs from the surrounding rocks. Relevant to the Mars Sample Return mission, the spectral features exhibited by the rocks sampled on the crater floor are representative of the diversity of spectra measured on the geological units investigated by the rover.

Abstract: International audience; The Perseverance rover (Mars 2020 mission, NASA) is exploring the mineral diversity of the paleolake within Jezero crater and is searching for potential biosignatures and past habitability. Amongst its science payload, the SuperCam instrument plays a central role in the Mars habitability investigation by providing rapid, synergistic, fine-scale mineralogy, chemistry, and color imaging [1, 2]. In particular, it carries the first near-infrared spectrometer, IRS, to be operated on the Martian surface. IRS is a miniaturized point spectrometer (1.15 mrad field of view) located in the SuperCam’s mast unit. Its spectral range (1.3 – 2.6 µm range) covers major silicate, salts and hydrated mineral absorption features [3].Mineral identifications are performed by analyzing the position and shape of diagnostic absorption bands. The recent results on the instrument’s radiometric calibration [4] enabled the identification of a 2.50 - 2.53 µm absorption feature attributable to carbonates. Carbonates also exhibit a 2.3 µm band similar to the 2.30 - 2.33 µm Fe/Mg-OH band of several phyllosilicates. Thus, this 2.5 µm feature is key to decorrelate the presence of phyllosilicates and carbonates. In the Crater Floor unit, it has been identified only in the Séitah formation, with the support of LIBS investigation [5], and many occurrences have been detected in the Delta.The study of the band depth ratio between the 2.3 and 2.5 µm bands, in terms of detection quality (signal to noise ratio, Fig. 1), shows that positive carbonates detections are consistent with phyllosilicate-carbonate mixtures with a low Mg/Fe-carbonate content. In the Crater Floor, this low carbonate content in presence of phyllosilicates and silicates points towards an alteration of the mafic phase with a CO2-rich fluid. Work is in progress to better understand deconvolution of carbonates from phyllosilicates.

Abstract: International audience; Jezero crater was chosen for exploration and sample collection by Perseverance due to its history as a lake with river deltas, its diverse mineralogy, including carbonates observed from orbit, and as a potential site to calibrate crater counting ages with radiometric dates of samples to be returned to Earth. This presentation focuses on the results of SuperCam, which uses LIBS for remote elemental chemistry, VISIR and remote Raman spectroscopy for mineral compositions and alteration, includes a microphone, and performs high-resolution imaging for textures and morphology. In the first year after landing, SuperCam and other instruments were used to explore Jezero’s floor. We found that all of the floor units are igneous, with lava flows comprising the upper units as part of the Máaz formation, while the lower formation, Séítah, is an olivine cumulate, produced by gravitational settling of olivine crystals in a large melt body. Artuby ridge, just outside the SW portion of Séítah and stratigraphically just above it, contains up to 60% pyroxene. The upper portions of the Máaz formation are more enriched in plagioclase, with the uppermost Ch’al member having the most evolved composition, along with the Content member, pitted rocks directly overlying the main cumulate portion of Séítah. After exploring the floor, Perseverance drove to the delta formation and began a walk-about style of observations starting at Enchanted Lake, just below an arm of the delta formation, and then moving into Hawksbill Gap, climbing 18 m in elevation between Devil’s Tanyard, Sunset Hill, and Hogwallow flats. Delta compositions initially displayed higher phyllosilicate contents, identified by absorptions at 1.4, 1.9, and 2.3 µm, and by higher LIBS H peak areas. Farther up, compositions changed to sulfur-bearing in lower locations within the continuous fine-grained light-toned strata (e.g., Pignut Mountain, Sol 463) and carbonate-rich in upper strata. Veins were observed, consisting of Mg-Fe carbonate (Elder Ridge, Sol 459) and anhydrite (Reid’s Gap, Sol 466). The sulfates suggest precipitation of these salts at a later stage, as the lake was evaporating. Carbonates and sulfates in veins in different locations indicate that groundwater was active in the lithified sediments and had significantly different chemistry at different intervals.

9. Water vapor at Jezero Crater, Mars

Abstract: Water on Mars is of interest today to assess the current cycling of water in and out of the regolith, cycling of water on and off of the polar caps, and to understand the current habitability potential of Mars. The regolith at polar and non-polar latitudes is an important reservoir for water storage, and an important resource for human exploration, and exchange of water between the regolith and atmosphere may play an important role in the global water cycle. Understanding water on Mars today helps us model the water cycle during different epochs on Mars, during which there was much more liquid water present in the system and Mars may have been inhabited.Additional time coverage and an additional location on the surface of Mars provided by the Perseverance MEDA relative humidity measurements at Jezero crater help reveal the regional similarities and differences across Mars. In addition, the Perseverance SuperCam or TIRS instruments can be used with the MEDA measurements of relative humidity to detect frost formation [2], to assess diurnal changes in the near-surface water content, possibly due to subsurface exchange (e.g., [5-6, 1]) or consistent with surface frost [2], and to check whether the environmental conditions at the surface and in the near surface are compatible with the formation of liquid brines [3-4].We examine the water vapor in the Martian atmosphere in the vicinity of Jezero Crater, Mars, where the Perseverance Rover is currently operating and acquiring data. We place the new water measurements from the rover instruments into the broader context, relating measurements to those of orbiters and other landers.

10. The acoustic properties of the Mars atmosphere at Jezero crater

Abstract: On February 18, 2021 NASAs Perseverance rover landed in Jezero Crater carrying two microphones operating on the surface of Mars, EDLCAM and Supercam. Therefore, it allows the unique opportunity to observe the atmosphere with continuous recordings and to conduct free-field sound propagation experiments on the Mars atmosphere. Positioned on top of the rovers mast, the Supercam microphone records audible sounds from 20 Hz to 10 kHz that originate from three main sources: the atmosphere (turbulence, wind), the Supercam laser-induced sparks on rocks and other rover sounds, especially the aeroacoustic signal generated by the high-speed rotating blades of the Ingenuity rotorcraft. These sounds spread over the entire frequency domain accessible by the microphone: (i) the turbulence/wind-induced acoustic signal starts from the lowest frequency, continuously up to few hundred Hz depending on the wind activity. It has a decreasing slope consistent with the dissipative regime. (ii) The frequency content of the laser-induced spark lies at higher frequencies (2 - 10 kHz) where it shows destructive interference gaps due to echoes on the mast structure and on nearby rocks. (iii) Rover generated sounds (pump, motor) are often monotonic. For instance, Ingenuity flights are heard at the blades passing frequency of ~84Hz and its first harmonic at 168 Hz. The Supercam microphone is now used daily to capture the diversity and the wealth of these phenomena. This presentation focuses on sound propagation properties of the Mars atmosphere, in particular, the first in situ measurement of the sound speed and acoustic intrinsic attenuation. The average sound speed (~240m/s) along the propagation path is derived from the time of flight of the laser-induced acoustic wave from the ground to the microphone. It is combined with the sound speed measured at the microphone location determined from the destructive interference gap in the spectrum. Then, it gives insights into the high frequency air temperature variations over the first two meters from the ground. Moreover, the evolution of the laser spark amplitude with the distance of the target is used to retrieve an attenuation coefficient between 2 and 10 kHz. At low frequency, the attenuation coefficient is studied with the helicopter tones. It is used to constrain existing models in the literature.

Abstract: International audience; The Perseverance rover (Mars 2020 mission, NASA) landed in the ancient lakebed of Jezero crater, Mars on February 2021. The payload includes the SuperCam instrument, which combines various remote-sensing techniques to investigate elemental and mineralogical composition. In particular, the near-infrared spectrometer of SuperCam is a novel instrument on the Martian surface. The spectra, together with data from additional visible spectrometers, cover the 0.390.85 m (VIS) and 1.32.6 m (IR) ranges, allowing the identification of a wide variety of minerals. Here, we present the spectral diversity in the VISIR of rocks and soils in the vicinity of the rovers traverse. As of sol 130, most of the rocks analyzed so far are dark-toned rocks in the crater floor (Cf-fr unit) with variable dust cover. Some variability in reflectance levels and absorption bands is observed within and among the rocks, but overall, they share similar spectral characteristics. In particular, most rocks exhibit an absorption near 1.9 m (indicating the presence of water). This band is usually observed weakly or is absent in local regolith but is detected with a depth up to ~20% in the rocks, indicating probably several wt.% of bound water. While mixing of different phases occurs in the few mm of the field of view of the spectrometer, the following candidates were identified: dust, an oxy-hydroxide (e.g., ferrihydrite), an iron-rich phyllosilicate (e.g., nontronite or hisingerite) and an AlOH-bearing phase. Contrary to what have been inferred from the orbit, no unequivocal mafic mineral signature has yet been identified in a rock target in the VISIR implying low mafic minerals content or small associated grain size. However, the soils exhibit a signature of olivine mixed with pyroxene (intermediate Ca content). Portions of sand ripples are strongly dominated by the olivine signature. The detection of widespread hydration features supports that some pervasive water-rock interactions occurred in the past near the Perseverance landing site. From CRISM orbital data, it is likely that the rover will be driving through areas exhibiting progressively increasing hydration throughout its traverse: future measurements on these potentially more hydrated and diverse rocks are expected to bring new insights into the past environment at Jezero crater.

Abstract: International audience; On February 18, 2021, NASAs Mars 2020 Perseverance rover landed successfully in Jezero crater. Several geological and compositional units have previously been identified from orbital data analysis [1,2]: a dark pyroxene-bearing floor unit; an olivine-bearing unit exposed in erosional windows partially altered into phyllosilicates and carbonates [3]; a deltaic complex with possible remnants and marginal carbonate-bearing unit [1]. The SuperCam instrument contains a suite of techniques including passive spectroscopy in the 0.40-0.85 (VIS) and 1.3-2.6 microns (IR) wavelength ranges, and a camera (RMI- Remote Micro-Imager) providing high resolution context images [4]. Since the landing, SuperCam has acquired tens of observations on distant targets (from 10s of m to 20 km) with VISIR and RMI techniques. The IFOV of the RMI images ranges from ~100 microns at 10m to ~20 cm at 20 km allowing to solve objects from ~0.5 mm at 10 m to ~1m at 20 km and the VISIR FOV range from 1 cm to 20 m. Distant observations have been acquired on the western delta front, several mesas and hills, on Jezero floor unit (the unit perseverance landed on and investigated in situ), on the olivine-bearing erosional window, and on more distant targets such as the crater rim or marginal carbonate-bearing unit. The observed spectral signatures form different clusters depending on the type of target, confirming the spectral diversity of Jezero geological units. The western delta front and a residual butte informally named Kodiak are clustered together with spectral signatures in agreement with a mixture of olivine, pyroxene and hydrated phases. The spectra of the erosional window into the olivine bearing unit display the strongest red slope between 1.3 and 1.8 microns, suggesting the presence of olivine in both the exposed rocks and the surrounding soils and in addition, the rocks display a strong signature of hydrated phases. The long distance observations of the crater floor unit are in agreement with the spectral signature identified in the vicinity of the rover [5], which confirms the relevance of long distance observations to assess the geological/mineralogical context of Perseverances future traverse. Abstract: The Mars 2020 Perseverance rover, which landed in February 2021, is carrying the SuperCam remote sensing suite [1,2]. It is a multifunctional spectroscopy instrument to analyze Martian rocks and soils with Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS), time resolved Raman and luminescence, Visible and Infrared Reflectance Spectroscopy, and color context imaging. It also includes a microphone (see Fig. 1) that records acoustic pressure fluctuations in the 100 Hz to 10 kHz frequency bandwidth. In particular, it supports LIBS investigation by listening to laser-induced sparks caused by the supersonic expansion of the plasma plume [3, 4]. The microphone also contributes to atmospheric science by recording the ambient noise [wind, turbulence, 5, 6] and it already listened to unique sounds from the Ingenuity Mars Helicopter flights. This abstract focuses on the first analysis of the LIBS acoustic signal recorded on Martian targets near the Octavia E. Butler landing site of Perseverance. Credits: NASA/JPL-Caltech/MSSS/ASU Listening to laser-induced sparks on Mars: The LIBS experiment of Supercam uses a pulsed laser in the infrared (1064nm) to ablate rock or soil targets at the Mars surface at distance up to 7 meters. A standard LIBS burst consists of 30 laser shots repeated at the same location on a target. It creates an ablation pit up to hundreds of µm deep, depending on the target hardness (see LIBS pits in Fig. 2) [4, 7]. Longer bursts of 150 shots, called depth profiles, can also be performed to look for any chemical stratification with depth. (b) RMI context mosaic highlighting the LIBS pits.Credits: NASA/JPL-Caltech/ASU/MSSS and NASA/JPL-Caltech/LANL/CNES/IRAP It has been shown in lab studies [3, 4] that recording of the LIBS acoustic signal helps to determine the target physical properties (hardness) and also the laser pit volume by looking at the decrease of the signal amplitude with the number of laser shots performed at the same location. In addition, laser sparks may also be used to study rock coatings. In particular, it will help to determine the depth of the transition between a coating and its underlying host rock [8]. Moreover, as the start of the microphone recording is triggered on the laser pulse, the propagation time of the sound wave from the ground up to the microphone height is precisely measured. Therefore, it gives the sound speed along the sound propagation path. This parameter is used to estimate the ‘acoustic temperature’, an average of the air temperature over the two first meters from the ground [9]. First results on Martian targets: Up to sol 78 of the mission, the Supercam microphone has recorded the LIBS acoustic signal from 12 targets, including 3 soil targets and 2 depth profiles. The LIBS acoustic signal recorded on the float rock Hedgehog (sol 37) is represented in Fig. 3. The time series (Fig. 3a) shows a shot-to-shot decrease of the acoustic amplitude over the 30 shots fired in this target. The comparison with the hardness calibration curve presented in [4] suggests a soft target with a Vickers hardness lower than 10 and an ablated volume of about 200 µm. The frequency spectrum (Fig. 3b) is showing an acoustic bandwidth between 2 kHz and 10 kHz (see Fig. 3a), consistent with pre-flight calibrations [10]. Some gaps in the spectrum (5700 Hz, 10900 Hz, 14800 Hz) are indicative of destructive interferences induced by the reflection of the sound wave over the structure of the mast. Some wind-induced signal are also noticed in the time series (see red circles in Fig. 3a). They can be easily filtered, as their frequency content is lower than 500 Hz [6]. However, the influence of the turbulent atmosphere on the LIBS acoustic signal, needs to be assessed, as it was not tested in the laboratory. Figure 3 - Time series (a) and power spectral density (b) of the LIBS acoustic signal recorded on point #5 of the Hedgehog target (sol 37) As for the soil targets, the LIBS acoustic data show a clear decrease with increasing shot number due to shielding within the self-induced hole and also helps to determine whether the laser hit a coarse grain (louder sound) or fine-grained soil. Perspectives: The Supercam microphone has the unique capability to record the acoustic signal induced by the laser-induced plasma. The microphone will help to document the target hardness along the rover traverse and complement the chemical information provided by LIBS by adding an estimation of the ablated depth. Abstract: International audience Since January 2012, we have been monitoring the behavior of sulfur dioxide and water on Venus, using the Texas Echelon Cross-Echelle Spectrograph imaging spectrometer at the NASA InfraRed Telescope Facility (IRTF, Mauna Kea Observatory). Here, we present new data recorded in February and April 2019 in the 1345 cm−1 (7.4 μm) spectral range, where SO2, CO2, and HDO (used as a proxy for H2O) transitions were observed. The cloud top of Venus was probed at an altitude of about 64 km. As in our previous studies, the volume mixing ratio (vmr) of SO2 was estimated using the SO2/CO2 line depth ratio of weak transitions; the H2O volume mixing ratio was derived from the HDO/CO2 line depth ratio, assuming a D/H ratio of 200 times the Vienna standard mean ocean water. As reported in our previous analyses, the SO2 mixing ratio shows strong variations with time and also over the disk, showing evidence for the formation of SO2 plumes with a lifetime of a few hours; in contrast, the H2O abundance is remarkably uniform over the disk and shows moderate variations as a function of time. We have used the 2019 data in addition to our previous dataset to study the long-term variations of SO2 and H2O. The data reveal a long-term anti-correlation with a correlation coefficient of −0.80; this coefficient becomes −0.90 if the analysis is restricted to the 2014–2019 time period. The statistical analysis of the SO2 plumes as a function of local time confirms our previous result with a minimum around 10:00 and two maxima near the terminators. The dependence of the SO2 vmr with respect to local time shows a higher abundance at the evening terminator with respect to the morning. The dependence of the SO2 vmr with respect to longitude exhibits a broad maximum at 120–200° east longitudes, near the region of Aphrodite Terra. However, this trend has not been observed by other measurements and has yet to be confirmed.

Abstract: International audience; The ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter (TGO), a mission by ESA and Roscosmos, was launched in March 2016 and reached its final, near-circular 400 km orbit around Mars in March, 2018. On board TGO, the Atmospheric Chemistry Suite (ACS) is a set of three spectrometers including a thermal-infrared channel, TIRVIM. This Fourier-transform spectrometer covers the range 600-6000 cm-1 (1.7-17μm) with a spectral resolution of 1.2 cm-1. We focus here on nadir observations in the range 600-1300 cm-1, which covers absorption by CO2 (centered at 667 cm-1), water ice clouds (centered at 820 cm-1) and dust (centered at 1100 cm-1). The advantage of the TIRVIM data set over previous instruments comes from the TGO orbit, which is not sun-synchronous and was designed to sample a complete daily cycle every 55 days. Hence, TIRVIM has the capacity to uniquely study both the diurnal and seasonal variability of the thermal structure, dust and ice cloud opacity. We have developed a radiative transfer model coupled to a retrieval algorithm that exploits TIRVIM spectra to simultaneously retrieve vertical profiles of the temperature from 5 to 45 km, surface temperature, and integrated optical depth of dust and water ice clouds. This algorithm was tested and validated against synthetic observations generated under various conditions (local time, seasons, latitude, aerosol load, ...). We have then applied this algorithm to the first 45 days of TIRVIM data acquired in March-April, 2018. The retrieved temperature profiles have been validated against thousands of co-located measurements acquired by the Mars Climate Sounder around 3am and 3pm, a limb-viewing radiometer onboard Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. The agreement between the two data sets is very satisfactory. In particular, the amplitude of the diurnal thermal tide as seen by MCS is very well captured by TIRVIM at pressures greater than 10 Pa. However, TIRVIM underestimates it in the range 1-10 Pa, which is due to a much poorer vertical resolution in this region (as expected from a nadir-viewing sounder). We will present these results with an emphasis on the diurnal cycle of the atmospheric temperature and the aerosols load, along with comparisons with predictions from the LMD Mars GCM. Analysis of TIRVIM data acquired during the dust storm in June-July 2018 is in progress and will also be presented. Acknowledgements: The ACS experiment is led by IKI in Moscow. Abstract: We report on the analysis of thermal infrared emission spectra recordedby ACS-TIRVIM on board the ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter (TGO). We focus onthe period 13 March 2018 till 15 July 2018, covering quiescent and dustyconditions. From these observations, we retrieve temperature verticalprofiles from 5 to 45 km as well as integrated dust and water iceopacity at various local times. The retrieved temperature profiles arein excellent agreement with co-located observations by Mars ClimateSounder, a limb-viewing radiometer onboard Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter.The global dust event resulted in an up to 40K temperature increase inthe middle atmosphere. We will discuss these results compared to GlobalClimate Model (GCM) simulations run with MY34 dust scenario. We willalso present and discuss the atmospheric state resulting from theassimilation of TIRVIM temperature profiles into the LMD Mars GCM.

25. Pluto's atmosphere with ALMA: disk-resolved observations of CO and HCN, and first detection of HNC

Abstract: Following our detection of HCN(4-3) and CO(3-2) in 2015 (Lellouch et al. 2017), we pursued our exploration of Pluto's atmosphere with ALMA. On July 30, 2017, we obtained maps of these CO and HCN emissions, with a 96 x 54 mas beam providing some spatial resolution of the Pluto disk in the North-South direction. On April 27, 2017, we explored portions of the 256.1-259.1 and 271.9-273.8 GHz spectrum, searching for HNC, CH3CN, and H13CN in disk-averaged observations. The highlight of this search was the detection of the HNC(3-2) line at 271.98 GHz, which appears as a narrow emission with a 15 mJy contrast. This first identification of HNC in Pluto's atmosphere reinforces the similarity to Titan's upper atmosphere, where HNC has been also observed (Moreno et al. 2011). Data interpretation in terms of (i) the spatial distribution of CO and HCN emissions (ii) the HNC abundance/vertical distribution, including comparison with photochemical models, will be presented.

26. First Measurements of Methyl Radical (CH3) in Jupiter's atmosphere using TEXES/IRTF and EXES/SOFIA

Abstract: We observed Jupiter with the TEXES instrument mounted on the IRTF telescope and the EXES instrument on board the SOFIA observatory in the range of methyl nu2 band at 16.5 mum. Both observations independently led to the detection of one or several lines of the methyl band. These observations, compared with synthetic spectra generated for several methyl vertical profiles, allows us to test photochemical models. Indeed, methyl recombination is the highly dominant pathway for the production of the most abundant photochemical product in Jupiter's atmosphere, ethane. Hence, this first measurement of methyl provides strong constraints on photochemical productions of heavy hydrocarbons in Jupiter's atmosphere.

27. Modeling the CH4 3.3 µm non-LTE emissions in Jupiter and Saturn

Abstract: The homopause divides planetary atmospheres into the high-pressure region where chemical species are well mixed by eddy diffusion and the low-pressure region where molecular diffusion separates species according to their individual masses. In Jupiter and Saturn, the homopause pressure level controls the methane abundance vertical profile, as methane is heavier than the two dominant species, H2 and He. Methane plays a critical role in establishing the thermal structure on these planets. It is the prime near-infrared absorber that warms the Jovian and Kronian upper atmospheres, and its photolysis by solar UV radiation triggers the production of ethane, acetylene, and heavier hydrocarbons that are the prime far-infrared coolants in these upper atmospheres. Hence the homopause level drives the heating rates, and, as ethane is mainly produced by the three-body methyl recombination (2CH3 M -> C2H6 M) whose reaction rate highly varies with pressure, the homopause level also controls the cooling rates. The determination of the methane homopause level in Jupiter and Saturn through solar occultations has been notoriously difficult as different studies and authors led to different results (see Moses et al. (2004), Fouchet et al. (2009) for reviews). Greathouse et al. (2010) even suggested that the Jovian homopause might vary spatially and/or temporally. Here we present a detailed non-LTE model of CH4 3.3 µm emissions for Jupiter and Saturn's atmosphere. The model accounts for various mechanisms of non-thermal excitation of CH4 molecules as well as inter- and intra-molecular vibrational-vibrational (VV) and vibrational-translational (VT) energy exchanges. With the help of this model, we studied the sensitivity of CH4 3.3 µm emissions to the temperature and methane abundance vertical profiles and compared integrated radiances with the corresponding Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) observations. We will discuss implications of these results to the interpretation of the homopause pressure level as well as opportunities the JWST telescope will provide to map the homopause across both planets.

After a long aerobraking phase, it reached its final, near-circular 400 km orbit in February, 2018 then started its operational scientific phase in March, 2018. On board TGO, the ACS-TIRVIM instrument has the capability to map the thermal structure of the Martian atmosphere and its aerosol load at a great variety of local times. In this abstract, we describe our retrieval algorithm used to analyse TIRVIM data. We discuss synthetic retrievals performed for a great variety of scenes to fine-tune and evaluate the performance of our algorithm, then present results obtained from the first orbits of TGO. Abstract: International audience; Over the course of its 29.5-years orbit, Saturn undergoes significant seasonal changes, owing to its 26.7° axial tilt. 2017 marks the end of the 13-year exploration of the Saturnian system by the Cassini spacecraft and coincides with summer solstice in Saturn's northern hemisphere. Monitoring changes in temperature and composition in Saturn's stratosphere through seasons can teach us about dynamical, radiative and chemical processes governing its atmospheric structure and evolution. Here we report on thermal infrared spectroscopic observations of Saturn's stratosphere in March 2017 obtained with the Texas Echelon Cross Echelle Spectrograph (TEXES) mounted on the Gemini telescope. We retrieve vertical profiles of the temperature between latitudes 15°S and 87°N from the analysis of methane emission lines near 1245 cm-1. The inferred zonally average thermal structure is validated against Cassini/CIRS measurements acquired in January and February 2017. These datasets (ground-based and space-based) are in excellent agreement. The 1-mbar temperature is found to increase moderately from 140K at 20°N to 145K at 60°N, then increases more sharply to reach 155K at 85°N. The overall meridional temperature gradient observed in 2017 resembles the one observed in 2004 in the southern summer hemisphere, where a warm ``polar hood'' was observed poleward of 70°S [Fletcher et al., 2008]. In contrast, a seasonal radiative-equilibrium model [Guerlet et al., 2014] predicts much smaller and smoother meridional temperature gradients with latitude. We further analysed Cassini/CIRS data acquired in 2014 over the northern hemisphere to study seasonal changes between 2014 and 2017. Surprisingly, the 1-mbar temperature has slightly cooled down in the region 25N-55N between these two dates, at odds with the moderate warming predicted by our radiative-equilibrium model. We will discuss several hypotheses to account for these model-observation mismatches. In addition, we also retrieve vertical profiles of ethane and acetylene volume mixing ratios from their emission lines recorded by TEXES near 822 and 728 cm-1 and will discuss their spatial distribution.

Abstract: International audience; In July 1994, the Shoemaker-Levy 9 comet (SL9) spectacularly impacted Jupiter near 44°S. On the long term, Jupiter was left with a variety of new species in its stratosphere, including CO, HCN, CS, H2O, and CO2. These species can be used as tracers for Jupiter’s stratospheric chemistry and dynamics. Their distributions have been monitored, although with strong limitations in terms of spatial resolution in most cases. We mapped the spectral emissions of CO and HCN (at 345 and 354 GHz, resp.) in Jupiter with ALMA in March 2017. We have successfully performed the first mosaic of Jupiter to cover the entire planet. We have recorded the data with a very high spectral resolution (up to 61 kHz) and at an unprecedented angular resolution of 1.1”, which translates into a meridional resolution of 3° at the equator and 7° at 70°S. The lines are detected at the planetary limb with a high signal-to-noise ratio. The emission distributions and line shapes at the limb indicate strong meridional variability for CO and HCN, quite different from one another. In this paper, we will present our observations and preliminary interpretation of the observed distributions.

Abstract: International audience; As a continuation of our ground-based thermal imaging campaign of Venus, we have been mapping Venus in December 2016 and January 2017 to monitor the behaviour of SO2 and H2O (through its proxy HDO). The SO2 mixing ratio was at its maximum since 2012. As during our previous runs, short-term variations of SO2 (with a timescale of a few hours) were observed. There is still no evidence for a correlation or an anti-correlation between SO2 and HDO. The thermal maps might show some correlation with the topography, but this remains to be confirmed with further observations.

Abstract: International audience; We study the evolution of Saturn's Quasi-Periodic Oscillation, a dynamical phenomenon observed in Saturn's stratosphere that has counterparts in Jupiter and the Earth stratospheres as well. Thermal infrared spectra acquired by Cassini/CIRS in limb viewing geometry in 2015 are used to derive 2-D latitude-pressure temperature and thermal wind maps in Saturn's stratosphere. These maps are compared to previous observations from 2005 and 2010 to characterize and study the evolution of the vertical structure of Saturn's equatorial oscillation. This phenomenon is thought to result from the interaction between upward-propagating waves and the mean zonal flow, but little is known on Saturn's stratospheric wave activity. CIRS nadir spectra are then used to map stratospheric temperatures with longitude and characterize planetary waves in the tropical region (20N-20S).

Abstract: International audience; Uranus and Neptune, referred to as ice giants, are fundamentally different from the better-known gas giants (Jupiter and Saturn). Exploration of an ice giant system is a high-priority science objective, as these systems (including the magnetosphere, satellites, rings, atmosphere, and interior) challenge our understanding of planetary formation and evolution. The importance of the ice giants is reflected in NASA's 2011 Decadal Survey, comments from ESA's SSC in response to L2/L3 mission proposals and results of the 2017 NASA/ESA Ice Giants study. A crucial part of exploration of the ice giants is in situ sampling of the atmosphere via an atmospheric probe. A probe would bring insights in two broad themes: the formation history of our Solar System and the processes at play in planetary atmospheres. Here we summarize the science driver for in situ measurements at these two planets and discuss possible mission concepts that would be consistent with the constraints of ESA M-class missions.

Abstract: International audience; The distribution of D/H ratio on Mars is crucial for understanding the planet’s water cycle including the exchange with surface reservoirs, and for estimating the amount of liquid water in the past. We have employed EXES (Echelle Cross Echelle Spectrograph) aboard SOFIA (Stratospheric Observatory For Infrared Astronomy) to map D/H on Mars in the thermal infrared, starting with the first measurement in April 2014 (Ls = 113°). Here we present a new measurement obtained in March 2016 (Ls = 127°). The disk-integrated value of D/H is found be 4.0 (+0.7, -0.6) x VSMOW, in agreement with our earlier result (4.4 (+1.0, -0.6) x VSMOW) [3]

Abstract: International audience; Following a long-term monitoring campaign on the abundance and distribution of hydrogen peroxide on Mars, we present a new observation near summer solstice which corresponds to a maximum of the seasonal abundance of H2O2. Our result is in full agreement with GCM predictions (Lefèvre et al. 2008; [1]). We also analyse previous measurements of H2O2 in the vicinity of aphelion which seem to indicate the existence of interannual variations, and we discuss their possible origin.

Abstract: International audience; Saturn's equatorial stratosphere exhibits at pattern of periodic oscillations in temperatures and zonal winds with a 15-year period (Fouchet et al., 2008, doi:10.1038/nature06912; Orton et al., 2008, doi:10.1038/nature06897). This pattern is analogous to Earth's Quasi-Biennial Oscillation (QBO) and Jupiter's Quasi-Quadrennial Oscillation (QQO), and may be driven by interaction of the mean zonal flow with waves spawned by tropospheric meteorology. Inversions of Cassini Composite Infrared Spectrometer (CIRS) limb and nadir spectra allowed the construction of a time series of Saturn's equatorial temperatures from 2004 to 2016, revealing the slow downward propagation of the temperature/wind pattern in the 0.1-100 mbar range. However, this pattern was spectacularly disrupted in 2011 at the same time as a large tropospheric storm system and associated stratospheric vortex (the 'beacon') were both active in the Saturn's northern springtime hemisphere (Fletcher et al., 2012, doi: 10.1016/j.icarus.2012.08.024). Temperatures were perturbed throughout Saturn's tropical stratosphere (30N-30S), with substantial cooling (10-K at 1 mbar) at 10N and 10S by 2012. This coincided with the removal of bright near-equatorial bands of methane emission observed from ground-based observatories at 7.8 µm. 1-mbar temperatures at 10N/10S did not recover to their pre-storm levels until 2014-15, when the familiar temperature/wind pattern of Saturn's equatorial oscillation was re-established and had resumed its downward propagation. The 2011 Saturnian storm therefore had a dramatic impact on the equatorial oscillation, shifting it into a new phase whose temporal period is yet to be determined. Horizontally and vertically propagating waves, emanating from both the storm and the beacon near 40N, could have transported momentum into the equatorial wind system to drive temperature changes across the equatorial region. Similar disruption associated with the 1990 equatorial storm could explain why the phase of the oscillation determined by Voyager (1980) did not match that observed by Cassini one Saturnian year later (Sinclair et al., 2014, doi: 10.1016/j.icarus.2014.02.009). A similar wave-momentum transport hypothesis was used to explain the unprecedented disruption of Earth's QBO in 2016 (Osprey et al., 2016, doi:10.1126/science.aah4156), reinforcing the similarities in processes shaping both terrestrial and giant planet middle atmospheres.

42. Emission from Pluto and Charon at Long Wavelengths: Observations using ALMA, SMA, and VLA

Abstract: We report on the first Earth-based observations of thermal emission from the surfaces of Pluto and Charon where the two are resolved from each other. Observations at wavelengths from 0.8 mm to 0.9 cm with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), Submillimeter Array (SMA), and Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) provide separate, high SNR flux densities for both bodies, which are converted into brightness temperatures. These observations have been presented separately previously [1-3] but here we combine them for the first time and extend the analysis. For Pluto, brightness temperatures range from 31--33 K, and for Charon from 42--45 K, over the full range of observed wavelengths. These brightness temperatures are significantly lower than observed surface temperatures for both bodies. While hinted at from unresolved observations of the pair, this is the first definitive observation showing both bodies have depressed brightness temperatures. These low brightness temperatures are likely due to a combination of low thermal inertia, and subsurface scattering, with a larger depression for Pluto than for Charon.[1] Butler et al. 2015, BAAS #47, id.210.04. At the beginning of 2015, using TEXES (Texas Echelon cross-dispersed Echelle Spectrograph), mounted on the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility (IRTF), we obtained data cubes of Jupiter in several spectral ranges between 2100 and 2200 cm-1 (4.5 - 4.7 mum) which probes the atmosphere in the 1-4 bar region, with a spectral resolution of R ≈ 7000 and an angular resolution of ≈ 1.5''. This dataset is analyzed by a code which combines a line-by-line radiative transfer model with a non-linear optimal estimation inversion method. The inversion takes into account the abundance profiles of AsH_3, CO, GeH4 and H_2O, as well as clouds contribution, in addtion to the abundance profiles of NH3 and PH_3. We will present the inverted abundance profiles, the spatial distribution of the molecular abundances, their significance for the understanding of Jupiter's atmospheric dynamics, and how this will be useful for the determination of water abundance up to 200 bars, which is one of the main objectives of the instrument MWR (MicroWave Radiometer) mounted on the Juno spacecraft. This work will also be useful to prepare the analysis of the JIRAM (Jovian InfraRed Auroral Mapper) 5-microns data aboard Juno.
