International audience; We propose a dynamic model adaptation method for a nonlinear conservation law coupled with an ordinary differential equation. This model, called the ''fine model", involves a small time scale and setting this time scale to 0 leads to a classical conservation law, called the ''coarse model", with a flux which depends on the unknown and on space and time. The dynamic model adaptation consists in detecting the regions where the fine model can be replaced by the coarse one in an automatic way, without deteriorating the accuracy of the result. To do so, we provide an error estimate between the solution of the fine model and the solution of the adaptive method, enabling a sharp control of the different parameters. This estimate rests upon stability results for conservation laws with respect to the flux function. Numerical results are presented at the end and show that our estimate is optimal.

International audience; This paper is devoted to the mathematical and numerical analysis of a coupling procedure for one-dimensional Euler systems. The two systems have different closure laws and are coupled through a thin fixed interface. Following the work of [5], we propose to couple these systems by a bounded vector-valued Dirac measure, concentrated at the coupling interface, which in the applications may have a physical meaning. We show that the proposed framework allows to control the coupling conditions and we propose an approximate Riemann solver based on a relaxation approach preserving equilibrium solutions of the coupled problem. Numerical experiments in constrained optimization problems are then presented to assess the performances of the present method. 1. Introduction The study of large-scale and complex problems exhibiting a wide range of physical space and time scales (see for instance [62, 35, 14]), usually requires separate solvers adapted to the resolution of specific scales. This is the case of many industrial flows. Let us quote, for example, the numerical simulation of two-phase flows applied to the burning liquid oxygen-hydrogen gas in rocket engines [58]. This kind of flow contains both separated and dispersed two-phase flows, due to atomization and evaporation phenomena. This requires appropriate models and solvers for separated and dispersed phases that have to be appropriately coupled. Another example concerns turbomachine flows which can be modeled by the Euler equations of gas dynamics with different closure laws between the stages of the turbine, where the conditions of temperature and pressure are strongly heterogeneous. The coupling of these different systems is thus necessary to give a complete description of the flow inside the whole turbine. The method of interface coupling allows to represent the evolution of such flows, where different models are separated by fixed interfaces. First, coupling conditions are specified at the interface to exchange information between the systems. The definition of transmission conditions generally results from physical consideration, e.g. the conservation or the continuity of given variables. Then, the transmission conditions are represented at the discrete level. The study of interface coupling for nonlinear hyperbolic systems has received attention for several years. In [43], the authors study the scalar case from both mathematical and numerical points of view.

42 pages; We construct an approximate Riemann solver for the isentropic Baer-Nunziato two-phase flow model, that is able to cope with arbitrarily small values of the statistical phase fractions. The solver relies on a relaxation approximation of the model for which the Riemann problem is exactly solved for subsonic relative speeds. In an original manner, the Riemann solutions to the linearly degenerate relaxation system are allowed to dissipate the total energy in the vanishing phase regimes, thereby enforcing the robustness and stability of the method in the limits of small phase fractions. The scheme is proved to satisfy a discrete entropy inequality and to preserve positive values of the statistical fractions and densities. The numerical simulations show a much higher precision and a more reduced computational cost (for comparable accuracy) than standard numerical schemes used in the nuclear industry. Finally, two test-cases assess the good behavior of the scheme when approximating vanishing phase solutions.

International audience; We give in this paper a short review of some recent achievements within the framework of multiphase flow modeling. We focus first on a class of compressible two-phase flow models, detailing closure laws and their main properties. Next we briefly summarize some attempts to model two-phase flows in a porous region, and also a class of compressible three-phase flow models. Some of the main difficulties arising in the numerical simulation of solutions of these complex and highly non-linear systems of PDEs are then discussed, and we eventually show some numerical results when tackling two-phase flows with mass transfer.

We continue our analysis of the coupling between nonlinear hyperbolic problems across possibly resonant interfaces. In the first two parts of this series, we introduced a new framework for coupling problems which is based on the so-called thin interface model and uses an augmented formulation and an additional unknown for the interface location; this framework has the advantage of avoiding any explicit modeling of the interface structure. In the present paper, we pursue our investigation of the augmented formulation and we introduce a new coupling framework which is now based on the so-called thick interface model. For scalar nonlinear hyperbolic equations in one space variable, we observe that the Cauchy problem is well-posed. Then, our main achievement in the present paper is the design of a new well-balanced finite volume scheme which is adapted to the thick interface model, together with a proof of its convergence toward the unique entropy solution (for a broad class of nonlinear hyperbolic equations). Due to the presence of a possibly resonant interface, the standard technique based on a total variation estimate does not apply, and DiPerna's uniqueness theorem must be used. Following a method proposed by Coquel and LeFloch, our proof relies on discrete entropy inequalities for the coupling problem and an estimate of the discrete entropy dissipation in the proposed scheme., Comment: 21 pages

In the present work, we propose a fractional step method for computing approximate solutions of the isentropic Baer-Nunziato two-phase flow model. The scheme relies on an operator splitting method corresponding to a separate treatment of fast propagation phenomena due to the acoustic waves on the one hand and slow propagation phenomena due to the fluid motion on the other. The scheme is proved to preserve positive values of the statistical fractions and densities. We also provide two test-cases that assess the convergence of the method. Nous proposons ici une méthode à pas fractionnaires pour le calcul de solutions approchées pour la version isentropique du modèle diphasique de Baer-Nunziato. Le schéma s’appuie sur un splitting de l’opérateur temporel correspondant à la prise en compte différenciée des phéno-mènes de propagation rapide dus aux ondes acoustiques et des phénomènes de propagation lente dus aux ondes matérielles. On prouve que le schéma permet de préserver des valeurs positives pour les taux statistiques de présence des phases ainsi que pour les densités. Deux cas tests numériques permettent d’illustrer la convergence de la méthode.

International audience; Phase transition problems in compressible media can be modelled by mixed hyperbolicelliptic systems of conservation laws. Within this approach phase boundaries are understood as shock waves that satisfy additional constraints, sometimes called kinetic relations. In recent years several tracking-type algorithms have been suggested for numerical approximation. Typically a core piece of these algorithms is the usage of exact Riemann solvers incorporating the kinetic relation at the location of phase boundaries. However, exact Riemann solvers are computationally expensive or even not available. In this paper we present a class of approximate Riemann solvers for hyperbolic-elliptic models that relies on a generalized relaxation procedure. It preserves in particular the kinetic relation for phase boundaries exactly and gives for isolated phase transitions the correct solutions. In combination with a novel sub-iteration procedure the approximate Riemann solvers are used in the tracking algorithms. The efficiency of the approach is validated on a barotropic system with linear kinetic relation where exact Riemann solvers are available. For a nonlinear kinetic relation and a thermoelastic system we use the new method to gain information on the Riemann problem. Up to our knowledge an exact solution for arbitrary Riemann data is currently not available in these cases.

International audience; Abstract: An efficient and robust time integration procedure for a high-order discontinuous Galerkin method is introduced for solving nonlinear second-order partial differential equations. The time discretization is based on an explicit formulation for the hyperbolic term and an implicit formulation for the parabolic term. The procedure uses an iterative algorithm with reduced evaluation cost. The size of the linear system to be solved is greatly reduced thanks to partial uncoupling in space between low-order and high-order degrees of freedom. Numerical examples are presented for the nonlinear convection-diffusion equation in one and two dimensions including steady and unsteady flow problems. The performance of the present method is investigated in terms of CPU time and compared to a fully implicit method. A Von Neumann stability analysis is carried out in order to determine the stability and damping properties of the method. Besides a fairly reduced CPU effort, numerical results demonstrate better convergence properties of the present algorithm when compared to the fully implicit method.

This paper presents the design and implementation of a numerical method to simulate a multiscale model describing the selection process in ovarian follicles. The PDE model consists in a quasi-linear hyperbolic system of large size, namely Nf × Nf, ruling the time evolution of the cell density functions of Nf follicles (in practice Nf is of the order of a few to twenty). These equations are weakly coupled through the sum of the first order moments of the density functions. The time-dependent equations make use of two structuring variables, age and maturity, which play the roles of space variables. The problem is naturally set over a compact domain of R2. The formulation of the time-dependent controlled transport coefficients accounts for available biological knowledge on follicular cell kinetics. We introduce a dedicated numerical scheme that is amenable to parallelization, by taking advantage of the weak coupling. Numerical illustrations assess th e relevance of the proposed method both in term of accuracy and HPC achievements. Ce document présente la conception et l’implémentation d’une méthode numérique servant à simuler un modèle multiéchelle décrivant le processus de sélection des follicules ovariens. Le modèle EDP consiste en un système hyperbolique quasi linéaire de grande taille, typiquement Nf × Nf, gouvernant l’évolution des fonctions de densité cellulaire pour Nf follicules (en pratique Nf est de l’ordre de quelques-uns à une vingtaine). Ces équations d’évolution utilisent deux variables structurantes, l’âge et la maturité, qui jouent le rôle de variables d’espace. Le problème est naturellement posé sur un domaine compact de R2. La formulation du transport à coefficients variables au cours du temps en fonction du contrôle est issue des connaissances disponibles sur la cinétique cellulaire au sein des follicules ovariens. Nous présentons un schéma numérique dédié au problème parallélisable en tirant parti du faible couplage. Des simulations numériques permettent d’évaluer la pertinence de la méthode proposée tant en terme de précision que de calcul haute performance.

We present a new approximate Riemann solver (ARS) for the gas dynamics equations in Lagrangian coordinates and with general nonlinear pressure laws. The design of this new ARS relies on a generalized Suliciu pressure relaxation approach. It gives by construction the exact solutions for isolated entropic shocks and we prove that it is positive, Lipschitz-continuous and satisfies an entropy inequality. Finally, the ARS is used to develop either a classical entropy conservative Godunov-type method, or a Glimm-type (random sampling-based Godunov-type) method able to generate infinitely sharp discrete shock profiles. Numerical experiments are proposed to prove the validity of these approaches.

International audience; We consider the seven-equation model for compressible two-phase flows and propose a large time-step numerical scheme based on a time implicit-explicit Lagrange-Projection strategy introduced by Coquel et al. for Euler equations. The main objective is to get a Courant-Friedrichs-Lewy (CFL) condition driven by (slow) contact waves instead of (fast) acoustic waves.

We investigate various analytical and numerical techniques for the coupling of nonlinear hyperbolic systems and, in particular, we introduce here an augmented formulation which allows for the modeling of the dynamics of interfaces between fluid flows. The main technical difficulty to be overcome lies in the possible resonance effect when wave speeds coincide and global hyperbolicity is lost. As a consequence, non-uniqueness of weak solutions is observed for the initial value problem which need to be supplemented with further admissibility conditions. This first paper is devoted to investigating these issues in the setting of self-similar vanishing viscosity approximations to the Riemann problem for general hyperbolic systems. Following earlier works by Joseph, LeFloch, and Tzavaras, we establish an existence theorem for the Riemann problem under fairly general structural assumptions on the nonlinear hyperbolic system and its regularization. We define coupling conditions which can be expressed in terms of continuity of some well chosen variables and then solve the coupled Riemann problem. In the present setting where the interface is charactersitic, a particular choice of dependent variables which are transmitted ensures the overall conservativity.

International audience; We present a numerical scheme based on a two-step convection-relaxation strategy for the simulation of compressible two-phase flows with phase change. The core system used here is a simple isothermal model where stiff source terms account for mass transfer.

This work is concerned with the numerical capture of stiff viscous shock solutions of Navier-Stokes equations for complex compressible materials, in the regime of large Reynolds numbers. After [2] and [6], a relevant numerical capture is known to require the satisfaction of an extended set of non classical Rankine-Hugoniot conditions due to the non conservation form of the governing PDE model. Here, we show how to enforce their validity at the discrete level without the need for solving local non linear algebraic problems. Non linearities are bypassed when introducing new averaging techniques which are proved to satisfy all the desirable stability properties when invoking suitable approximate Riemann solutions. A relaxation procedure is proposed to that purpose with the benefit of a fairly simple overall numerical method.

We prove the existence and uniqueness of the Riemann solutions to the Euler equations closed by N independent constitutive pressure laws. This model stands as a natural asymptotic system for the multi-pressure Navier–Stokes equations in the regime of infinite Reynolds number. Due to the inherent lack of conservation form in the viscous regularization, the limit system exhibits measure-valued source terms concentrated on shock discontinuities. These non-positive bounded measures, called kinetic relations, are known to provide a suitable tool to encode the small-scale sensitivity in the singular limit. Considering N independent polytropic pressure laws, we show that these kinetic relations can be derived by solving a simple algebraic problem which governs the endpoints of the underlying viscous shock profiles, for any given but prescribed ratio of viscosity coefficient in the viscous perturbation. The analysis based on traveling wave solutions allows us to introduce the asymptotic Euler system in the setting of piecewise Lipschitz continuous functions and to study the Riemann problem.

We investigate the existence and properties of traveling wave solutions for the hyperbolic-elliptic system of conservation laws describing the dynamics of van der Waals fluids. The model is based on a constitutive equation of state containing two inflection points and incorporates nonlinear viscosity and capillarity terms. A global description of the traveling wave solutions is provided. We distinguish between classical and non-classical trajectories and, for the latter, the existence and properties of kinetic functions is investigated. An earlier work in this direction (cf. [4]) was restricted to dealing with one inflection point only. Specifically, given any left-hand state and any shock speed (within some admissible range), we prove the existence of a non-classical traveling wave for a sequence of parameter values representing the ratio of viscosity and capillarity. Our analysis exhibits a surprising lack of monotonicity of traveling waves. The behavior of these non-classical trajectories is also investigated numerically.

International audience; Closure laws for interfacial pressure and interfacial velocity are proposed within the frame work of two-pressure two-phase flow models. This thesis involves two main objectives: the modelling of compressible multiphase and multicomponent flows, and the design of novel numerical schemes for their accurate simulation.In regards to the modelling of multiphase flows, we focus on a Baer-Nunziato-like non-equilibrium model and propose a novel for reactive gas-liquid flows. Our model is hyperbolic and accounts for the mass transfer, the interfacial drag, the mechanical disequilibrium as well as thermal transfer between the phases. The model is Galilean invariant and entropy dissipative and exhibits these properties at complete non-equilibrium.With respect to the design of novel schemes for compressible flows, we focus on hyperbolic multiphase and multicomponent flow models in nonconservative form. Our discretization framework is based on the discontinuous Galerkin spectral elements method (DGSEM), based on collocation of quadrature and interpolation points. The DGSEM uses summation-by-parts (SBP) operators with simultaneous approximation terms (SAT) in the numerical quadrature for approximating the integrals over discretization elements. For our purpose, we modify the integral over cell elements by replacing the physical fluxes with entropy conservative fluxes in fluctuation form while applying entropy stable fluxes at the interface. This modification along with the SBP-SAT operators allows us to establish a semi-discrete scheme which is high-order accurate and that satisfies a semi-discrete entropy inequality. For high-order integration in time, we rely on explicit strong-stability preserving Runge-Kutta schemes that retain the properties of first order time integration schemes.We apply this scheme for the discretization of the homogeneous Baer-Nunziato model, where we derive entropy conservative and entropy stable fluxes for the model. The design of the numerical fluxes are also shown to, formally, preserve the kinetic energy at the discrete level. By analysing the fully discrete scheme, we impose conditions on the numerical parameters that restricts the time step and guarantees the positivity of the cell averaged solutions. The positivity of cell-averaged solution is further enforced at the nodal values by applying a posteriori limiters.The semi-discrete DG scheme is also applied for the discretization of the gamma-based multicomponent model of Shyue (1998). Here we aim to propose a novel high-order entropy stable scheme which allows for a sharp resolution of the material discontinuities. To this purpose, we derive entropy conservative fluxes and contact-preserving fluxes that are applied in the volume integral, based on a troubled-cell indicator function. For the numerical fluxes at the interface we design a HLLC-like solver for the multicomponent model. We show that the DG scheme satisfies a semi-discrete entropy inequality for shock solutions, preserves uniform profiles across contacts and material interfaces and maintains positivity of the solution.Numerical tests are performed in one and two space dimensions that highlight the properties of our numerical schemes., Cette thèse a deux objectifs principaux : la modélisation des écoulements compressibles multiphasiques et multi-composants, et la conception de nouveaux schémas numériques pour leur simulation d'ordre élevé.En ce qui concerne la modélisation des écoulements multiphasiques, nous nous concentrons sur le modèle de non-équilibre de type Baer-Nunziato et proposons un nouveau modèle pour les écoulements impliquant un mélange réactif de gaz et de liquide. Notre modèle est hyperbolique et prend en compte le transfert de masse, la traînée interfaciale, le déséquilibre mécanique ainsi que le transfert thermique entre les phases. Le modèle est invariant par transformations galiléennes et dissipe l'entropie.En ce qui concerne la conception de nouveaux schémas pour les écoulements compressibles, nous nous concentrons sur les modèles hyperboliques d'écoulement multiphasiques et multi-composants sous forme non-conservative. Nous choisissons comme cadre de discrétisation la méthode des éléments spectraux de Galerkin discontinus (DGSEM), basée sur la collocation des points de quadrature et d'interpolation. La méthode DGSEM utilise des opérateurs de sommation par parties (SBP) dans la quadrature numérique pour approcher les intégrales sur les éléments de discrétisation. Dans notre cas, nous modifions l'intégrale sur les éléments de la cellule en remplaçant les flux physiques par des flux aux fluctuations conservant l'entropie tout en appliquant des flux dissipant l'entropie aux interfaces du maillage. Cela nous permet d'établir un schéma semi-discret qui est précis à l'ordre élevé et qui satisfait à une inégalité d'entropie semi-discrète. Pour l'intégration temporelle d'ordre élevé, nous nous appuyons sur des schémas explicites de Runge-Kutta préservant la stabilité et conservant les propriétés des schémas d'intégration temporelle au premier ordre.Nous appliquons ce schéma à la discrétisation du modèle homogène de Baer-Nunziato, où nous dérivons des flux conservant et dissipant l'entropie physique pour le modèle. Nous montrons également que la conception des flux numériques préserve formellement l'énergie cinétique au niveau discret. En analysant le schéma discret, nous imposons des conditions sur les paramètres numériques qui restreignent le pas de temps et garantissent la positivité des solutions moyennées par cellule. La positivité de la solution moyenne de la cellule est renforcée aux valeurs nodales en appliquant des limiteurs.Le schéma DGSEM est également appliqué pour la discrétisation du modèle multi-composants de Shyue (1998) pour des lois d'état de type gaz raidis. Nous proposons ici un nouveau schéma stable d'entropie d'ordre élevé qui permet une résolution précise des discontinuités matérielles. À cette fin, nous dérivons des flux dissipant l'entropie et des flux préservant les contacts qui sont appliqués dans l'intégrale de volume, sur la base d'un senseur de chocs. Pour les flux numériques à l'interface, nous concevons un solveur de type HLLC pour le modèle multi-composants. Nous montrons que le schéma DG satisfait à inégalité d'entropie semi-discrète pour les solutions de choc, préserve les profils uniformes à travers les contacts et les interfaces matérielles et maintient la positivité de la solution.Plusieurs tests numériques sont effectués en une et deux dimensions d'espace qui mettent en évidence les propriétés de nos schémas numériques.

The main goal of this work is to improve the accuracy and computational efficiency of Large Eddy Simulations (LES) by means of discontinuous Galerkin (DG) methods. To this end, two main research topics have been investigated: resolution adaptation strategies and LES models for high-order methods.As regards the first topic, in the framework of DG methods the spatial resolution can be efficiently adapted by modifying either the local mesh size (h-adaptation) or the degree of the polynomial representation of the solution (p-adaptation).The automatic resolution adaptation requires the definition of an error estimation strategy to analyse the local solution quality and resolution requirements.The efficiency of several strategies derived from the literature are compared by performing p- and h-adaptive simulations. Based on this comparative study a suitable error indicator for the adaptive scale-resolving simulations is selected.Both static and dynamic p-adaptive algorithms for the simulation of unsteady flows are then developed and analysed. It is demonstrated by numerical simulations that the proposed algorithms can provide a reduction of the computational cost for the simulation of both transient and statistically steady flows.A novel error estimation strategy is then introduced. It is local, requiring only information from the element and direct neighbours, and can be computed at run-time with limited overhead. It is shown that the static p-adaptive algorithm based on this error estimator can be employed to improve the accuracy for LES of statistically steady turbulent flows.As regards the second topic, a novel framework consistent with the DG discretization is developed for the a-priori analysis of DG-LES models from DNS databases. It allows to identify the ideal energy transfer mechanism between resolved and unresolved scales.This approach is applied for the analysis of the DG Variational Multiscale (VMS) approach. It is shown that, for fine resolutions, the DG-VMS approach is able to replicate the ideal energy transfer mechanism.However, for coarse resolutions, typical of LES at high Reynolds numbers, a more accurate agreement is obtained by a mixed Smagorinsky-VMS model.; L'objectif principal de ce travail est d'améliorer la précision et l'efficacité des modèles LES au moyen des méthodes Galerkine discontinues (DG). Deux thématiques principales ont été étudiées: les stratégies d'adaptation spatiale et les modèles LES pour les méthodes d'ordre élevé.Concernant le premier thème, dans le cadre des méthodes DG la résolution spatiale peut être efficacement adaptée en modifiant localement soit le maillage (adaptation-h) soit le degré polynômial de la solution (adaptation-p). L'adaptation automatique de la résolution nécessite l'estimation des erreurs pour analyser la qualité de la solution locale et les exigences de résolution. L'efficacité de différentes stratégies de la littérature est comparée en effectuant des simulations h- et p-adaptatives.Sur la base de cette étude comparative, des algorithmes statiques et dynamiques p-adaptatifs pour la simulation des écoulements instationnaires sont ensuite développés et analysés. Les simulations numériques réalisées montrent que les algorithmes proposés peuvent réduire le coût de calcul des simulations des écoulements transitoires et statistiquement stationnaires.Un nouvel estimateur d'erreur est ensuite proposé. Il est local, car n'exige que des informations de l'élément et de ses voisins directs, et peut être calculé en cours de simulation pour un coût limité. Il est démontré que l'algorithme statique p-adaptatif basé sur cet estimateur d'erreur peut être utilisé pour améliorer la précision des simulations LES sur des écoulements turbulents statistiquement stationnaires.Concernant le second thème, une nouvelle méthode, consistante avec la discrétisation DG, est développée pour l'analyse a-priori des modèles DG-LES à partir des données DNS. Elle permet d'identifier le transfert d'énergie idéal entre les échelles résolues et non résolues. Cette méthode est appliquée à l'analyse de l'approche VMS (Variational Multiscale). Il est démontré que pour les résolutions fines, l'approche DG-VMS est capable de reproduire le transfert d'énergie idéal. Cependant, pour les résolutions grossières, typique de la LES à nombres de Reynolds élevés, un meilleur accord peut être obtenu en utilisant un modèle mixte Smagorinsky-VMS.

It allows to identify the ideal energy transfer mechanism between resolved and unresolved scales.This approach is applied for the analysis of the DG Variational Multiscale (VMS) approach. It is shown that, for fine resolutions, the DG-VMS approach is able to replicate the ideal energy transfer mechanism.However, for coarse resolutions, typical of LES at high Reynolds numbers, a more accurate agreement is obtained by a mixed Smagorinsky-VMS model.; L'objectif principal de ce travail est d'améliorer la précision et l'efficacité des modèles LES au moyen des méthodes Galerkine discontinues (DG). Deux thématiques principales ont été étudiées: les stratégies d'adaptation spatiale et les modèles LES pour les méthodes d'ordre élevé.Concernant le premier thème, dans le cadre des méthodes DG la résolution spatiale peut être efficacement adaptée en modifiant localement soit le maillage (adaptation-h) soit le degré polynômial de la solution (adaptation-p). L'adaptation automatique de la résolution nécessite l'estimation des erreurs pour analyser la qualité de la solution locale et les exigences de résolution. L'efficacité de différentes stratégies de la littérature est comparée en effectuant des simulations h- et p-adaptatives.Sur la base de cette étude comparative, des algorithmes statiques et dynamiques p-adaptatifs pour la simulation des écoulements instationnaires sont ensuite développés et analysés. Les simulations numériques réalisées montrent que les algorithmes proposés peuvent réduire le coût de calcul des simulations des écoulements transitoires et statistiquement stationnaires.Un nouvel estimateur d'erreur est ensuite proposé. Il est local, car n'exige que des informations de l'élément et de ses voisins directs, et peut être calculé en cours de simulation pour un coût limité. Il est démontré que l'algorithme statique p-adaptatif basé sur cet estimateur d'erreur peut être utilisé pour améliorer la précision des simulations LES sur des écoulements turbulents statistiquement stationnaires.Concernant le second thème, une nouvelle méthode, consistante avec la discrétisation DG, est développée pour l'analyse a-priori des modèles DG-LES à partir des données DNS. Elle permet d'identifier le transfert d'énergie idéal entre les échelles résolues et non résolues. Cette méthode est appliquée à l'analyse de l'approche VMS (Variational Multiscale). Il est démontré que pour les résolutions fines, l'approche DG-VMS est capable de reproduire le transfert d'énergie idéal. Cependant, pour les résolutions grossières, typique de la LES à nombres de Reynolds élevés, un meilleur accord peut être obtenu en utilisant un modèle mixte Smagorinsky-VMS.

The adaptive numerical simulation of multiscale flows is generally carried out by means of a hierarchy of different models according to the specific scale into play and the level of precision required. This kind of numerical modeling involves complex multiscale coupling problems. This thesis is thus devoted to the development, analysis and implementation of efficient methods for solving coupling problems involving hyperbolic models.In a first part, we develop and analyze a coupling algorithm for one-dimensional Euler systems. Each system of conservation laws is closed with a different pressure law and the coupling interface separating these models is assumed fix and thin. The transmission conditions linking the systems are modelled thanks to a measure source term concentrated at the coupling interface. The weight associated to this measure models the losses of conservation and its definition allows the application of several coupling strategies. Our method is based on Suliciu's relaxation approach. The exact resolution of the Riemann problem associated to the relaxed system allows us to design an extremely accurate scheme for the coupling model. This scheme preserves equilibrium solutions of the coupled problem and can be used for general pressure laws. Several numerical experiments assess the performances of our scheme. For instance, we show that it is possible to control the flow at the coupling interface when solving constrained optimization problems for the weights.In the second part of this manuscript we design two high order numerical schemes based on the discontinuous Galerkin method for the approximation of the initial-boundary value problem associated to Jin and Xin's model. Our first scheme involves only discretization errors whereas the second approximation involves both modeling and discretization errors. Indeed in the second approximation, we replace in some regions the resolution of the relaxation model by the resolution of its associated scalar equilibrium equation. Under the assumption of a possible characteristic coupling interface, we exactly solve the Riemann problem associated to the coupled model. This resolution allows us to design a high order numerical scheme which captures the possible boundary layers at the coupling interface. Finally, the implementation of our methods enables us to analyze quantitatively and qualitatively the modeling and discretization errors involved in the coupled scheme. These errors are functions of the mesh size, the degree of the polynomial approximation and the position of the coupling interface., La simulation numérique adaptative d'écoulements présentant des phénomènes multi-échelles s'effectue généralement au moyen d'une hiérarchie de modèles différents selon l'échelle mise en jeu et le niveau de précision requis. Ce type de modélisation numérique entraîne des problèmes de couplage multi-échelles complexes. Cette thèse est ainsi dédiée au développement, à l'analyse et à la mise en œuvre de méthodes performantes permettant de résoudre des problèmes de couplage en espace de modèles décrits par des systèmes d'équations aux dérivées partielles hyperboliques.Dans une première partie, nous développons et analysons une méthode numérique dédiée au couplage interfacial des équations d'Euler mono-dimensionnelles. Chacun des systèmes de lois de conservation est muni d'une loi de pression distincte et l'interface de couplage séparant ces modèles est supposée fixe et infiniment mince. Les conditions de transmission sont modélisées par un terme source mesure localisé à l'interface de couplage. Le poids associé à cette mesure modélise les pertes de conservation à l'interface (typiquement des pertes de charge) et sa définition permet l'application de plusieurs stratégies de couplage. Notre méthode d'approximation repose sur les techniques d'approximation par relaxation de type Suliciu. La résolution exacte du problème de Riemann pour le système relaxé nous permet de définir un schéma numérique équilibre pour le modèle de couplage. Ce schéma préserve certaines solutions stationnaires du modèle de couplage et est applicable pour des lois de pression générales. L'implémentation de notre méthode permet de mener des expériences numériques illustrant les propriétés de notre schéma. Par exemple, nous montrons qu'il est possible de contrôler l'écoulement à l'interface de couplage en calculant des poids solutions de problèmes d'optimisation sous contraintes.La deuxième partie de cette thèse est dédiée au développement de deux schémas numériques d'ordre arbitrairement élevé en espace pour l'approximation des solutions stationnaires du problème mixte associé au modèle de Jin et Xin. Nos schémas d'approximation reposent sur la méthode de Galerkin discontinue. L’approximation des solutions du problème mixte par notre premier schéma fait intervenir uniquement des erreurs de discrétisation tandis que notre deuxième schéma est constitué à la fois d'erreurs de modélisation et de discrétisation. L'erreur de modélisation provient du remplacement, dans certaines régions spatiales, de la résolution du modèle de relaxation par celle de l'équation scalaire équilibre associée. Sous l'hypothèse d'une interface de couplage éventuellement caractéristique, la résolution du problème de Riemann associé au modèle couplé nous permet de construire un schéma numérique d'ordre arbitrairement élevé prenant en compte l'éventuelle existence de couches limites à l'interface de couplage. Enfin, la mise en œuvre de ces méthodes nous permet d'analyser quantitativement et qualitativement les erreurs de modélisation et de discrétisation commises lors de l'utilisation du schéma couplé. Ces erreurs sont fonction du niveau de raffinement de maillage utilisé, du degré de polynôme choisi et de la position de l'interface de couplage.

This work focuses on the development of the Discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method for the large-eddy simulation (LES) of turbulents flows. The DG method shows some interesting properties for LES : high-order of accuracy, compact stencil, unstructured meshes and amodal polynomial basis which can be used to implement multiscale turbulence models. We consider in this work the Variational Multiscale approach (VMS), which consists in splitting the resolved scales into two components using the modal basis in order to restrict the action of the model to a given range of small scales. The models have been tuned using the transfer functions of the DG hp-discretizations. The accuracy of the DG method for the representation of turbulent phenomena has been assessed through DNS of free and wall-bounded canonical flows. Finally, the VMS/DG approach has been assessed for simple configurations at high Reynolds numbers. We have shown that this particular approach allows for an accurate representation of turbulent flows for coarse discretizations.; Cette thèse vise à développer et évaluer la méthode de Galerkin discontinue (DG) pour la simulationdes grandes échelles (LES) des écoulements turbulents. L’approche DG présente un nombre d’avantages intéressants pour la LES : ordre élevé, stencil compact, prise en compte des maillages non structurés et expression de la solution numérique dans une base de polynômes permettant l’utilisation de modèles de turbulence multi-échelle. Parmi ce type de modèles, nous nous sommes intéressés ici à la méthode Variational Multiscale (VMS) qui consiste à séparer les échelles résolues dans la base de polynômes pour restreindre l’influence du modèle à une gamme réduite d’échelles. Les modèles considérés ont été paramétrés en prenant en compte les fonctions de transfert spécifiques aux discrétisations DG. La précision de la méthode pour la représentation de phénomènes turbulents variés a été évaluée à travers la réalisation de DNS de configurations académiques. Enfin, l’approche VMS/DGa été éprouvée sur des configurations simples à haut nombre de Reynolds. Il apparaît que cette méthodologie permet la représentation précise des phénomènes turbulents pour un coût réduit en terme de degrés de liberté.

In computational fluid dynamics, one challenge is the development of high order approximation methods, such as those of Discontinuous Galerkin (DG). If such methods allow the simulation of complex flows to be considered as an alternative to usual methods of order two, they nevertheless suffer from a strong restriction on the time step when combined with an explicit time discretization. The thesis consists in implementing an efficient strategy of implicit-explicit time integration, associated with a DG space discretization of high order, for convection dominated unsteady flows of viscous compressible fluids modelled by the system of Navier-Stokes equations. The spatial discretization of DG method is associated with numerical fluxes of inviscid and viscous fluids with compact stencil. In the presence of curved material boundaries, high order is guaranteed by the discretization of the computational domain using iso-parametric representation. The temporal integration strategy is based on a Strang splitting where the convective terms are solved explicitly and the diffusive ones implicitly. Its efficiency results from a simplification of the implicit scheme where the computation of the implicit matrix is approximated with a Jacobian-free method and where the degrees of freedom of the scheme are decoupled. Thereby, the size of the linear system to be solved and the computational time of the resolution are significantly reduced. Finally, validation and performance assessment of the numerical scheme are made through five test cases properly referenced in two-dimensional space., En mécanique des fluides numérique, un enjeu est le développement de méthodes d'approximation d'ordre élevé, comme celles de Galerkin Discontinues (GD). Si ces méthodes permettent d'envisager la simulation d'écoulements complexes en alternative aux méthodes usuelles d'ordre deux, elles souffrent cependant d'une forte restriction sur le pas de temps lorsqu'elles sont associées à une discrétisation explicite en temps. Ce travail de thèse consiste à mettre en œuvre une stratégie d'intégration temporelle explicite-implicite efficace, associée à une discrétisation spatiale GD d'ordre élevé, pour les écoulements instationnaires à convection dominante de fluides visqueux compressibles modélisés par le système des équations de Navier-Stokes. La discrétisation spatiale de la méthode GD est associée à des flux numériques de fluides parfaits et visqueux à stencil compact. En présence de frontières matérielles courbes, l'ordre élevé est garanti par la discrétisation du domaine de calcul à l'aide d'une représentation iso-paramétrique. La stratégie d'intégration temporelle repose sur une décomposition d'opérateurs de Strang, où les termes de convection sont résolus explicitement et ceux de diffusion implicitement. Son efficacité résulte d'une simplification du schéma implicite, où le calcul de la matrice implicite est approché avec une méthode sans jacobienne et où les degrés de liberté du schéma sont découplés. De fait, la taille du système linéaire à résoudre et le temps de calcul de la résolution sont significativement réduits. Enfin, la validation et l'évaluation des performances du schéma numérique sont réalisées à travers cinq cas tests bien référencés en deux dimensions d'espace.

This thesis deals with the Baer-Nunziato two-phase flow model. The main objective of this work is to propose some techniques to cope with phase vanishing regimes which produce important instabilities in the model and its numerical simulations. Through analysis and simulation methods using Suliciu relaxation approximations, we prove that in these regimes, the solutions can be stabilised by introducing some extra dissipation of the total mixture entropy. In a first approach, called the Eulerian approach, the exact resolution of the relaxation Riemann problem provides an accurate entropy-satisfying numerical scheme, which turns out to be much more efficient in terms of CPU-cost than the classical and very simple Rusanov's scheme. Moreover, the scheme is proved to handle the vanishing phase regimes with great stability. The scheme, first developed in 1D, is then extended in 3D and implemented in an industrial code developed by EDF. The second approach, called the acoustic splitting approach, considers a separation of fast acoustic waves from slow material waves. The objective is to avoid the resonance due to the interaction between these two types of waves, and to allow an implicit treatment of the acoustics, while material waves are explicitly discretized. The resulting scheme is very simple and allows to deal simply with phase vanishing. The originality of this work is to use new dissipative closure laws for the interfacial velocity and pressure, in order to control the solutions of the Riemann problem associated with the acoustic step, in the phase vanishing regimes., Cette thèse s'intéresse au modèle diphasique de Baer-Nunziato. L'objectif de ce travail est de proposer quelques techniques de prise en compte de la disparition de phase, régime occasionnant d'importantes instabilités au niveau du modèle et de sa simulation numérique. Par des méthodes d'analyse et de simulation reposant sur les techniques d'approximation par relaxation à la Suliciu, on montre que dans ces régimes, on peut stabiliser les solutions en introduisant une dissipation de l'entropie totale de mélange. Dans une première approche dite approche Eulerienne directe, la résolution exacte du problème de Riemann pour le système relaxé permet de définir un schéma entropique extrêmement précis, et qui se révèle bien plus économique en terme de coût CPU (à précision donnée) que le schéma classique très simple de Rusanov. La nouveauté est ici l'exploitation de fermetures dissipatives nouvelles du couple vitesse et pression d'interface, qui permettent le contrôle des solutions du problème de Riemann associé à l'étape acoustique.

International audience; This special issue comprises selected papers from the workshop New Trends in Model Coupling, Theory, Numerics and Applications (NTMC'09) which took place in Paris, September 2 - 4, 2009. The research of optimal technological solutions in a large amount of industrial systems requires to perform numerical simulations of complex phenomena which are often characterized by the coupling of models related to various space and/or time scales. Thus, the so-called multi-scale modelling has been a thriving scientific activity which connects applied mathematics and other disciplines such as physics, chemistry, biology or even social sciences. To illustrate the variety of fields concerned by the natural occurrence of model coupling we may quote: meteorology where it is required to take into account several turbulence scales or the interaction between oceans and atmosphere, but also regional models in a global description, solid mechanics where a thorough understanding of complex phenomena such as propagation of cracks needs to couple various models from the atomistic level to the macroscopic level; plasma physics for fusion energy for instance where dense plasmas and collisionless plasma coexist; multiphase fluid dynamics when several types of flow corresponding to several types of models are present simultaneously in complex circuits; social behaviour analysis with interaction between individual actions and collective behaviour.

Numerical simulations are nowadays a major tool in aerodynamic design in aeronautic, automotive, naval industry, etc... One of the main challenges to push further the limits of the simulation codes is to increase their accuracy within a fixed set of resources (computational power and/or time). Two possible approaches to deal with this issue are either to construct discretization yielding, on a given mesh, very high order accurate solutions, or to construct compact, massively parallelizable schemes to minimize the computational time by means of a high performance parallel implementation. In this thesis, we try to combine both approaches by investigating the construction and implementation of very high order Residual Distribution Schemes (RDS) with the most possible compact stencil. The manuscript starts with a review of the mathematical theory of hyperbolic Conservation Laws (CLs). The aim of this initial part is to highlight the properties of the analytical solutions we are trying to approximate, in order to be able to link these properties with the ones of the sought discrete solutions. Next, we describe the three main steps toward the construction of a very high order RDS: \begin{itemize} \item The definition of higher order polynomial representations of the solution over polygons and polyhedra; \item The design of low order compact conservative RD schemes consistent with a given (high degree) polynomial representation. Among these, particular accent is put on the simplest, given by a generalization of the Lax-Friedrich's (LxF) scheme; \item The design of a positivity preserving nonlinear transformation, mapping first-order linear schemes onto nonlinear very high order schemes. \end{itemize} In the manuscript, we show formally that the schemes obtained following this procedure are consistent with the initial CL, that they are stable in $L^{\infty}$ norm, and that they have the proper truncation error. Even though all the theoretical developments are carried out for scalar CLs, remarks on the extension to systems are given whenever possible. Unfortunately, when employing the first order LxF scheme as a basis for the construction of the nonlinear discretization, the final nonlinear algebraic equation is not well-posed in general. In particular, for smoothly varying solutions one observes the appearance of high frequency spurious modes. In order to kill these modes, a streamline dissipation term is added to the scheme. The analytical implications of this modifications, as well as its practical computation, are thoroughly studied. Lastly, we focus on a correct discretization of the boundary conditions for the very high order RDS proposed. The theory is then extensively verified on a variety of scalar two dimensional test cases. Both triangular, and hybrid triangular-quadrilateral meshes are used to show the generality of the approach. The results obtained in these tests confirm all the theoretical expectations in terms of accuracy and stability and underline some advantages of the hybrid grids. Next, we consider solutions of the two dimensional Euler equations of gas dynamics. The results obtained are quite satisfactory and yet, we are not able to obtain the desired convergence rates on problems involving solid wall boundaries. Further investigation of this problem is under way. We then discuss the parallel implementation of the schemes, and analyze and illustrate the performance of this implementation on large three dimensional problems. Due to the preliminary character and the complexity of these three dimensional problems, a rather qualitative discussion is made for these tests cases: the overall behavior seems to be the correct one, but more work is necessary to assess the properties of the schemes in three dimensions. In the last chapter, we consider one possible extension to the Navier-Stokes equations in which the viscous terms are discretized by a standard Galerkin approach. We formally show that the overall discretization is consistent with the Navier-Stokes equations. However some accuracy issues are highlighted and discussed. The method is tested on a flat plate laminar boundary layer flow. The results are satisfactory. The work presented in this thesis allows a better understanding of the general properties of very high order RDS, and contributes substantially to bring forward a number of open issues for future improvement. These improvements should make RD discretizations a very appealing alternative to now classical high order and very high order FV ENO/WENO schemes, and to the increasingly popular class of Discontinuous Galerkin schemes.; La simulation numérique est aujourd'hui un outils majeur dans la conception des objets aérodynamiques, que ce soit dans l'aéronautique, l'automobile, l'industrie navale, etc... Un des défis majeurs pour repousser les limites des codes de simulation est d'améliorer leur précision, tout en utilisant une quantité fixe de ressources (puissance et/ou temps de calcul). Cet objectif peut être atteint par deux approches différentes, soit en construisant une discrétisation fournissant sur un maillage donné une solution d'ordre très élevé, soit en construisant un schéma compact et massivement parallélisable, de manière à minimiser le temps de calcul en distribuant le problème sur un grand nombre de processeurs. Dans cette thèse, nous tentons de rassembler ces deux approches par le développement et l'implémentation de Schéma Distribuant le Résidu (RDS) d'ordre très élevé et de compacité maximale. Ce manuscrit commence par un rappel des principaux résultats mathématiques concernant les Lois de Conservation hyperboliques (CLs). Le but de cette première partie est de mettre en évidence les propriétés des solutions analytiques que nous cherchons à approcher, de manière à injecter ces propriétés dans celles de la solution discrète recherchée. Nous décrivons ensuite les trois étapes principales de la construction d'un schéma RD d'ordre très élevé : \begin{itemize} \item la représentation polynomiale d'ordre très élevé de la solution sur des polygones et des polyèdres; \item la description de méthodes distribuant le résidu de faible ordre, compactes et conservatives, consistantes avec une représentation polynomiale des données de très haut degré. Parmi elles, une attention particulière est donnée à la plus simple, issue d'une généralisation du schéma de Lax-Friedrichs (LxF); \item la mise en place d'une procédure préservant la positivité qui transforme tout schéma stable et linéaire, en un schéma non linéaire d'ordre très élevé, capturant les chocs de manière non oscillante. \end{itemize} Dans le manuscrit, nous montrons que les schémas obtenus par cette procédure sont consistants avec la CL considérée, qu'ils sont stables en norme $\L^{\infty}$ et qu'ils ont la bonne erreur de troncature. Même si tous ces développements théoriques ne sont démontrés que dans le cas de CL scalaires, des remarques au sujet des problèmes vectoriels sont faites dès que cela est possible. Malheureusement, lorsqu'on considère le schéma LxF, le problème algébrique non linéaire associé à la recherche de la solution stationnaire est en général mal posé. En particulier, on observe l'apparition de modes parasites de haute fréquence dans les régions de faible gradient. Ceux-ci sont éliminés grâce à un terme supplémentaire de stabilisation dont les effets et l'évaluation numérique sont précisément détaillés. Enfin, nous nous intéressons à une discrétisation correcte des conditions limites pour le schéma d'ordre élevé proposé. Cette théorie est ensuite illustrée sur des cas test scalaires bidimensionnels simples. Afin de montrer la généralité de notre approche, des maillages composés uniquement de triangles et des maillages hybrides, composés de triangles et de quadrangles, sont utilisés. Les résultats obtenus par ces tests confirment ce qui est attendu par la théorie et mettent en avant certains avantages des maillages hybrides. Nous considérons ensuite des solutions bidimensionnelles des équations d'Euler de la dynamique des gaz. Les résultats sont assez bons, mais on perd les pentes de convergence attendues dès que des conditions limite de paroi sont utilisées. Ce problème nécessite encore d'être étudié. Nous présentons alors l'implémentation parallèle du schéma. Celle-ci est analysée et illustrée à travers des cas test tridimensionnel de grande taille. Du fait de la relative nouveauté et de la complexité des problèmes tridimensionels, seuls des remarques qualitatives sont faites pour ces cas test : le comportement global semble être bon, mais plus de travail est encore nécessaire pour définir les propriétés du schémas en trois dimensions. Enfin, nous présentons une extension possible du schéma aux équations de Navier-Stokes dans laquelle les termes visqueux sont traités par une formulation de type Galerkin. La consistance de cette formulation avec les équations de Navier-Stokes est démontrée et quelques remarques au sujet de la précision du schéma sont soulevées. La méthode est validé sur une couche limite de Blasius pour laquelle nous obtenons des résultats satisfaisants. Ce travail offre une meilleure compréhension des propriétés générales des schémas RD d'ordre très élevé et soulève de nouvelles questions pour des améliorations futures. Ces améliorations devrait faire des schémas RD une alternative attractive aux discrétisations classiques FV ou ENO/WENO, aussi bien qu'aux schémas Galerkin Discontinu d'ordre très élevé, de plus en plus populaires.
