International audience; This paper analyses the electromagnetic (EM) wavescattering from an object buried between two random roughinterfaces. We present a rigorous numerical EM model basedon the boundary integral equation method that separates thedifferent sensed media, which is discretized by the method ofmoments. The resulting linear system is resolved by a fast methodcalled GPILE (Generalized Propagation Inside Layer Expansion),which makes it possible to reduce the complexity of the inversionof the impedance matrix and to isolate the different contributionsto the overall scattering process. This method is then appliedto a roadway sensed by GPR, with a view to calculating itstime-domain response. The practical objective of this analysisis to study the impact of an embedded object inside a complexmultilayered medium on the GPR signal.

An integrated geophysical investigation involving the magnetic, electrical resistivity, and ground penetrating radar (GPR) methods was carried out within Ita Yemoo archaeological site at Ile-Ife, southwestern Nigeria. This was to assess the potency of the geophysical methods to individually or collectively identify potsherd/stone pavement and map the spatial distribution of the archaeological feature to guide future excavation and minimize invasiveness. The GPR method is the most potent geophysical method for pavement mapping at relatively shallow depth (of up to 1.0 m or thereabout) using radargrams and depth slice maps attributes. The electrical resistivity method is next in potency using 2D dipole-dipole data derived and depth-specific 2D apparent resistivity maps as diagnostic attributes. This method has the limitation of suppressing the archaeological feature due to its thin nature and overlapping resistivity values with the host materials. The 1D Micro VES has very limited but useful applications in estimating pavement resistivities and thicknesses of outcropping pavements. These geoelectrical parameters are needed to constrain the interpretation of 2D resistivity sections and maps. The magnetic method has the least potency because of the overlapping magnetic effects of the weakly magnetic potsherd/stone pavement and the equally weakly magnetic weathered basement-derived host materials. The method is, however, useful in the estimation of the depth of archaeological relevance, which is needed in field design.

The southern coast of Argentina is composed of many coarse-grained coastal barriers, which are mostly concentrated at the mouth of a few large rivers that drains the Andean mountains. As the Patagonian estuaries are characterized by tidal ranges that are among the largest in the world, coastal barriers are exposed to high amplitude tide-induced sea-level changes as well as strong tidal currents. In order to better understand the influence of tides in wave-built sedimentary bodies, an in-depth analysis of the architecture of barrier systems has been realized at the mouth of the Santa Cruz estuary (50°S). Maximum tidal range is 12 m in this estuary. A great variety of morphologies compose both sides of the estuary inlet, from simple spits and barrier spits to beach ridges. Barrier spit and beach ridges characterize the southern side, whereas elongated simple spits and spit barriers isolating large tidal flats are more developed on the northern side. As a consequence of this configuration the northern system is much wider than the southern one (6 km vs 1 km). The site was investigated using ground-penetrating radar (400 MHz GSSI antenna), along with the analysis of digital elevation models and some sedimentological observations. Cross-shore and long-shore profiles, with a penetration depth up to 4 meters, show a large range of radar facies attributed to erosional surfaces, beach face progradation, along-drift elongation, hooks and spit terminus development, and washover deposits. The analysis of the radar architecture allows reconstructing the development of individual morphology, and helps to differentiate the influence of wave- and tide-related processes. The most open-sea barrier spit systems show a classic development controlled by the wave-related littoral drift entering into the estuary (onshore directed), and enhanced due to shore parallel flood currents into the inlet. In contrast, in the innermost part of the northern side, spits and barrier spits feature contrasting morphologies, structures and directions of elongation, either landward or seaward, reflecting a complex combination between wave-, tide-and fluvial dynamics on their construction. One of the spits imaged with the GPR shows an intense reflection that has been associated with the top of the tidal flat on which the spit migrates (Fig. 1). The GPR lines highlight the control of underlying substrate on spit morphologies A same morphology is thus characterized by different architectures; in Figure 1B the prograding sequence follows a transgressive sequence, while in Figure 1C the transgressive sequence cannot be observed in the architecture due to the highest elevation of the tidal flat. In the southern side of the estuary, the barriers show extensive progradational sequences with different slopes that seem to depend on the spit morphology, and therefore on the exposure to ocean swells.

Ce présent rapport constitue le livrable de l’Axe A1.a concernant les carottages des annexes fluviatiles de DZM et BLN et les travaux de géophysique aquatique effectués sur le RCC de DZM dans le cadre de l’Axe C5.4. Ce travail compile les résultats d’analyses granulométriques, MO, radionucléides, POPs de 2 carottes sédimentaires (DZM-C01 et DZM-C04) au niveau des annexes fluviales du RCC de DZM et parachève ainsi l’objectif « OSR 5 » de 6 carottes dans des contextes de déposition et/ou RCC différents. Les résultats révèlent des signaux concordants entre hypothèse de sédimentation et indicateurs géochimiques : la diminution de la granulométrie pouvant être interprétée comme consécutive à la mise en dérivation en 1952 ; pic des PCBs pouvant correspondre aux années 70/80, etc. En outre, l’application exploratoire du Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) en milieu aquatique s’est révélée concluante, corroborée par la carotte aquatique DZM-C01 qui témoigne de séquences sédimentaires pertinentes en rapport aux réflecteurs observés sur le radargramme. A BLN, les analyses des radargrammes (GPR) et de la granulométrie des carottes constituaient la partie exploratoire visant à caractériser les états initiaux et l’impact des aménagements sur les dynamiques sédimentaires. Elles ont permis de mieux caractériser les dépôts sédimentaires et l’impact des aménagements en déterminant trois unités sédimentaires : unités « pré-Girardon », « pré-dérivation » et « post-dérivation. A noter que la carotte BLN-C02 étant dans un casier Girardon ayant connu une sédimentation « pré » et « post » -dérivation, on y observe un décrochage « granulométrique » (BLN C02) « contraire » à ce que l’on constate en plaine alluviale (cas de BLN-C03 et Vauclin et al., 2020) avec des sédiments qui seraient plus grossiers en post-dérivation (partie haute de la carotte) et plus fins avant celle-ci (partie basse de la carotte). Ceci pourrait s’expliquer par un fonctionnement par « débordement » spécifique aux casiers Girardon : les flux entrants ne peuvent avoir lieu que pour des débits assez forts pour transporter des sédiments par-dessus la digue, jouant ainsi sur la capacité de transport et laissant entrer des sédiments légèrement plus grossiers (sableux). A noter que cette piste interprétative mériterait un approfondissement par le biais d’analyses complémentaires afin de vérifier les chronologies et de déterminer s’il n’y a pas eu de remobilisation sédimentaire.

A novel traveltime tomography approach has been developed to invert both velocity and anisotropy restricted to 2D geometry. The fundamental equation whose solution gives us the first-arrival traveltimes between a source and a receiver is the Eikonal equation, which becomes more complex when anisotropy is considered. In order to solve the Eikonal, an Eulerian formulation based on element-discretization discontinuous Galerkin method is adopted. The use of a direct solver allows us to obtain the total solution of the Eikonal, this includes diffraction events that may occur in the presence of large-velocity contrasts, while the widely used ray solution does not include these events. For the inverse part, an iterative local gradient-based optimization is chosen, where a least-square misfit function between picked and synthetic traveltimes need to be minimized. Contrary to other tomography approaches that usually compute the expensive sensitivity matrix, we avoid this computation by using the adjoint-state method. The adjoint formulation allows us to obtain the gradient efficiently by solving a transport equation that propagates the residuals from receivers to each source location, thus describing the sensitivity of the data to the model. We have developed a workflow that includes model regularization and data-weight matrix. Anisotropy is obtained under the elliptical assumption, thus two parameters are inverted simultaneously with an optimal parametrization that includes vertical and horizontal velocities, this choice being driven by a sensitivity analysis and synthetic examples. The code was used for active seismic and electromagnetic data acquired in carbonates both at the field and laboratory scale with different acquisition configurations. A first example concerns crosshole GPR acquisitions performed at the field scale within the Laboratoire Souterrain à Bas Bruit (LSBB) facilities, where the presence of a deep gallery makes the inversion challenging. In this weak anisotropy environment, the results are confronted to full wave inversion results and to geological data. At the laboratory scale, a multi-physics acquisition including seismic and GPR data was tested on a cubic rock sample. It underlines some issues related to the size of the sources/receivers compared to the dimension of the sample, which must be tackled before considering any inversion. Then, the datasets are inverted and velocity/anisotropy images are obtained and discussed in terms of heterogeneity and potential localized fractures.; Une nouvelle approche de tomographie des temps de parcours des ondes a été développée pour inverser à la fois la vitesse et l'anisotropie, ceci dans une géométrie 2D. L'équation fondamentale dont la solution nous donne les temps de parcours de première arrivée entre une source et un récepteur est l'équation d'Eikonal, qui devient plus complexe lorsque l'anisotropie est considérée. Afin de résoudre cette équation, une formulation eulérienne basée sur la méthode de discrétisation par éléments dite de Galerkin-discontinus est adoptée. L'utilisation d'un solveur direct nous permet d'obtenir la solution totale de l'Eikonal, ce qui inclut les événements de diffraction qui peuvent se produire en présence de contrastes de vitesse importants, alors que la solution classique de rayon n'inclut pas ces événements. Pour la partie inverse, une optimisation locale itérative basée sur le gradient est choisie, où une fonction par moindres carrés, qui compare les temps de parcours mesurés et synthétiques, doit être minimisée. Contrairement à d'autres approches de tomographie qui calculent généralement la coûteuse matrice de sensibilité, nous évitons ce calcul en utilisant la méthode de l'état adjoint. La formulation adjointe nous permet d'obtenir efficacement le gradient en résolvant une équation de transport qui propage les résidus des récepteurs à chaque emplacement de la source, décrivant ainsi la sensibilité des données au modèle. Nous avons développé un algorithme qui inclut la régularisation du modèle et une matrice de pondération des données. L'anisotropie est obtenue sous l'hypothèse elliptique : seuls deux paramètres sont inversés simultanément avec une paramétrisation optimale qui inclut les vitesses verticale et horizontale, ce choix étant conduit par une analyse de sensibilité et des exemples synthétiques. Le code a été utilisé pour des données sismiques et électromagnétiques actives acquises dans les carbonates à la fois sur le terrain et à l'échelle du laboratoire avec différentes configurations d'acquisition. Un premier exemple concerne des acquisitions GPR entre forages réalisées à l'échelle du terrain au sein des installations du Laboratoire Souterrain à Bas Bruit (LSBB), où la présence d'une galerie profonde rend l'inversion difficile. Dans cet environnement à faible anisotropie, les résultats sont confrontés aux résultats de l'inversion des champs d’ondes complets et aux données géologiques. A l'échelle du laboratoire, une acquisition multi-physique incluant des données sismiques et GPR a été testée sur un échantillon de roche cubique. Cela met en évidence certains problèmes liés à la taille des sources/récepteurs par rapport à la dimension de l'échantillon, qui doivent être corrigés avant de considérer toute inversion. Dans un second temps, les jeux de donnée sont inversés et des images de vitesse/anisotropie sont obtenues et discutées en termes d'hétérogénéité et de fractures localisées potentielles.

International audience; The seismic activity observed in the vicinity of Ulaanbaatar (UB) capital city has been increased since 2005. Several active faults have been identified in the UB area. Most of the Mongolian population is concentrated around UB (1.5 million), which is the main political and economic center of the country. Hence, the study of seismic hazard is of first importance for the country. In this paper, we present the GPR results obtained on the Songino fault which is situated at 20 km west-southwest of UB at the northeast tip of Khustai fault. The combination of the morphotectonic, GPR and paleoseismological investigations brings essential information for seismic hazards assessments. The 2D GPR profiles are measured by using 250 and 500 MHz antennae and the topography using a differential GPS. An appropriate processing of the GPR data, including the topographic migration, allows us to bring out indirect characteristics of these faults. The objective is to identify near-surface geometry and coseismic deformation along the mapped fault. The 250 MHz GPR images of the Songino fault show the evolution of the sub-surface deformation mode induced by the arched geometry of the Songino fault. We observe a clear compressive structure at its NW section, strike slip at its central section and extensive structure in its SE part.

Virtual meeting; International audience; Interest on coastal barriers is closely related to the strong anthropogenic pressure on coastal environments. Nevertheless, morphodynamic evolution of coastal barriers and the way it is recorded in the internal structure are still revealing many uncertainties. Coastal spits have a high potential of preservation due to their fast elongation under littoral drift, and are thus suitable for this kind of study. Compared to sandy spits, gravel and mixed spits are understudied. Yet these coarse-grained coastal barriers are sensitive sedimentary bodies due to the high energy conditions they are usually associated with and to often scarce sediment supply. The present study focus on the relationships between multi-decadal morphological evolution of a mixed sand and gravel spit in the bay of Somme (Northern France) and its sedimentary architecture. A geophysical survey using a 400 MHz GPR antenna have been performed on the Molliere spit, a fast-growing secondary spit developing along the main 15 km-long Somme barrier spit. The development of this sedimentary body starts in the 1950s and allows a morpho-stratigraphical approach, thanks to the cross analysis of aerial photographs and GPR profiles. The spit is 5 km long and is composed of several ridges, sometimes with hooks at the tip. It is supplied by flint pebbles originating from the erosion of Cretaceous chalk cliffs south of the bay, and transported by a northward longshore drift. A synthetic depositional and stratigraphical model specific to gravel spits is proposed, based on radar profiles and aerial photographs analysis, differentiating three contrasting morpho-sedimentary units. The first unit at the spit root is characterized by mainly progradating structures that can be assimilated to a beach ridge. The second unit in the central part of the spit is characterized by individual ridges with a core structure reflecting a longshore development, topped by an aggradating unit associated to a cross-shore-dominated dynamics. At the spit terminus, the third unit is also mainly characterized by longshore dynamics, but interfering with sand bank dynamics due to the proximity of the Somme estuary and the development of the spit platform. A detailed 3D stratigraphical analysis of a hook inflexion point gives a first insight into the processes of reactivation of a recurved terminus, leading to a new phase of longshore elongation. Larger-scale GPR prospecting, especially in older coast sections, will be necessary to understand how this fast secondary spit development (decadal to centennial time scale) is integrated into the longer-term (millennial) construction dynamics of the main Somme spit.

International audience; The goal of this study is to develop a tool that will evaluate the moisture content gradient in the depth of reinforced concretes in the context of building safety. The monitoring of ageing phenomena, such as the corrosion of steel reinforcements, depends on the amount of water and on its gradient as they are directly related to the dielectric values of the concrete. In this paper, to obtain these values, we propose to solve an inverse problem for reinforced concrete. First, an experimental device based on radar measurements is proposed with its 3D numerical model. Next, we describe an inverse process to determine a dielectric profile according to the depth and validate it on measured data obtained for control samples.; L’objectif de cette étude est de proposer un outil pour détecter la corrosion des aciers dans le béton armé. Celle-ci est directement liée au taux d’humidité dans le béton. Nous nous intéressons alors à retrouver des valeurs de diélectriques du béton à l’aide d’un problème inverse. Dans ce papier, nous nous sommes intéressés à retrouver des profils de diélectriques suivant la profondeur dans des échantillons contrôlés. Pour cela, nous avons écrit le problème inverse à résoudre et nous avons validé la pertinence des valeurs trouvées par rapport à des mesures de ces mêmes valeurs.

International audience; Les racines des arbres peuvent endommager les trottoirs, les canalisations et les installations humaines. Par conséquent, la reconstruction du système racinaire dans ses trois dimensions est d'une importance capitale pour comprendre et réduire les interactions entre les arbres et les infrastructures urbaines. Le radar à pénétration de sol (GPR) est une technique non invasive pour l'étude des racines des arbres. Dans cette contribution, des simulations GPR ont été réalisées sur des racines sous le logiciel GprMax en mode 3D sous des conditions de sol hétérogènes. Une chaîne de post-traitement des radargrammes a été développée pour reconstruire les architectures racinaires. Le traitement proposé est basé essentiellement sur la technique de décomposition en valeurs singulières (SVD) pour la réduction du bruit, la Transformée de Hough et la technique du filtre adapté.

5 pp; International audience; Several factors limit the root detection using Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR). By using simulations under optimal conditions in terms of mode operation, we establish a two-dimensional grid enabling to evaluate the detectability of roots according to their diameter and water content. The decision about root detectability is made by applying a chain of post-processing to simulation outputs. Using a bi-static GPR system involving folded complementary bowtie antennas, we also carried out laboratory experiments on “freshly-extracted” roots inside an anechoic chamber in order to get experimental radargrams and have a reference for simulation color scale.

This paper presents a structural inspection of loaded concrete members using robotic nondestructive testing techniques. The hand-held nondestructive test methods are the most common tools to detect internal defects. Due to the accessibility problem, environmental contamination or safety issues, the Robotic NDT plays an indispensable role in health monitoring and inspection of such structures. The robotic systems are developed for various NDT sensors such as ground Pentation Radar (GPR), Echo Hammer and Portable Seismic Properties Analyzer (PSPA). To develop the techniques, twelve reinforced concrete beams are fabricated in four different groups to simulate the most common types of concrete defects. These groups are control beams; beams with the internal void; beams with corroded bars and beams with debonded bars, respectively. Some of the beams have non-uniform thicknesses and others have rough surfaces (honeycombing). These beams are inspected robotically while they are not loaded and then the same beams are inspected while they are loaded under a mainframe MTS system. The purpose of the second inspection is to track the progress of the internal defects. The loaded beams inspection is performed at three loading states, state one is at post cracking, state two is at 0.70 of ultimate load and the third state is at the ultimate load. The outcome of this study shows that developing a Robotic NDT system can be an effective method to assess the structural conditions of defected concrete members.

This study focusses on examining the behaviour of an innovative asphalt pavement which is created as a solar energy collector, using non‐destructive testing involving ground‐penetrating radar. The concept of heat exchanger is based on the use of drainage asphalt in the bonding layer through which a heated fluid flows via gravity to de‐ice the roadway. In order to develop hydrothermal models for a test site representing such a pavement, the saturated porous layer assumption was required when the water level in each tank (up‐ and downstream of the structure) was same as the top of the porous layer. Two ground‐penetrating radar techniques were tested at this test site: a ground‐coupled impulse radar and an air‐coupled stepped‐frequency radar. The impulse ground‐penetrating radar, a high‐efficiency non‐destructive testing technique which is widely used in civil engineering, provides accurate geometric information, especially for pavement investigation. In the second innovative approach, air‐coupled stepped‐frequency radar was combined with full‐waveform inversion to obtain quantitative information, while retrieving the electromagnetic properties of the successive pavement layers. We concentrated on the early‐stage water imbibition in the pavement structure using the impulse ground‐penetrating radar to estimate the fluid transfer velocity and both ground‐penetrating radar techniques to verify the saturated porous layer assumption in the steady state. Ground‐coupled radar enabled us to follow the water front and to capture different water‐transfer behaviours in the porous asphalt layer. Our observation could be explained by the vertical topology of the upper watertight interface. Air‐coupled stepped‐frequency ground‐penetrating radar presented similar results to ground‐coupled ground‐penetrating radar but provided a quantitative estimate of the changes within the porous layer during the test.

Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) is an usual nondestructive testing method for the assessment of concrete structures. The benefit of this method lies within its ability to assess quickly a large scale of concrete surface. Generally, GPR is used for the localization of reinforcements or for the thickness measurements. However, GPR can be also used for the diagnosis of concrete because concrete is a porous dielectric material which can modify the propagation of the electromagnetic (EM) waves. Most common results present the ability of GPR to assess moisture. But, GPR could be also used to detect the presence of chlorides into the interstitial concrete solution as chlorides can modify the concrete conductivity and altered the electromagnetic signal waves. However, only few studies have been carry-out on that field. Therefore, in this study, we propose to use GPR electromagnetic waves to evaluate both the water content and the chloride content inside the interstitial concrete solution of several tests concrete samples. So, several groups of concrete samples with the same formulation will be conditioned for different chloride contamination modes. Thereafter, a velocity measurement process will be proposed from the reflected signal wave analysis. In that process, we will show that the velocity is only affected by the water content while the attenuation strongly affected by both the water content and the chloride content. Furthermore, we will test several permittivity models to predict the dielectric permittivity and the loss factor estimated from the concrete samples measurements with the GPR device and the electrical resistivity device.; Le géoradar, ou Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) en anglais, est une méthode non destructive couramment utilisée pour l'auscultation des ouvrages en béton. L'intérêt de cette méthode réside sur sa capacité à ausculter rapidement des très grandes surfaces, elle est de plus en plus employée en Génie Civil. Habituellement, cette méthode est utilisée en Génie Civil pour la localisation les aciers de renforcements, ou bien pour l'estimation de l'épaisseur d'enrobage du béton. Toutefois, la méthode GPR peut aussi être utilisée pour l'auscultation du béton. En effet, le béton est un matériau diélectrique poreux qui peut modifier la propagation des ondes électromagnétiques (EM). Les résultats les plus récents présentent la capacité du GPR à évaluer la teneur en eau. Cependant, le GPR pourrait très bien aussi être utilisé pour la détection des ions chlorure présents dans la solution interstitielle du béton, car comme les chlorures modifient la conductivité du béton ils sont susceptibles d'atténuer les ondes électromagnétiques. Néanmoins, seulement quelques études ont été menées dans ce domaine. Par conséquent, dans cette étude, nous proposons d'utiliser les ondes EM du géoradar pour estimer conjointement la teneur en eau et la teneur en chlorure du béton pour différents corps d'épreuves. Pour cela, plusieurs séries de corps d'épreuves sont utilisées avec des modes de contaminations par les chlorures différents. Une procédure de mesure de la vitesse à partir de l'analyse des signaux réfléchis est proposée. On démontre que la vitesse des ondes EM est essentiellement affectée par la teneur en eau alors que l'atténuation est sensible à la fois à la teneur en eau et à la teneur en chlorures. Ensuite, dans un second temps, nous testons différents modèles de permittivité pour prédire les mesures de constante diélectrique et du facteur de pertes évalués à partir des mesures par GPR ou de résistivité électrique.

This paper addresses the use of non-destructive testing (NDT) methods to assess indicators for both the concrete durability (porosity, degree of saturation) and mechanical properties (elasticity modulus, compressive strength) of reinforced concrete structures. NDT results, called 'observables', are obtained by means of ultrasonic or electromagnetic methods and then correlated with these mechanical and durability indicators. The conversion model used to transform observables into indicators depends on the actual concrete mix design. If this conversion model is unavailable for the reinforced structure under study, then the evaluation may be inadequate due to high uncertainty on the results. This paper proposes a calibration methodology to derive a conversion model appropriate for the structure by use of a minimum number of cores in order to improve the on-site evaluation. A motorway bridge is tested and characterized by NDT, after which some cores are extracted for calibration and others for validation. The cores are subsequently non-destructively characterized in the laboratory and/or used to determine indicators by means of standardized destructive methods. The non-destructive calibration protocol on cores is presented first. Next, NDT results recorded in situ and on the corresponding core are compared. Also, durability indicators deduced from on-site NDT measurements in addition to calibration are compared with reference durability indicators that have been independently determined by standard destructive methods. Results obtained by analyzing more than 1600 data fully validate the tested calibration methodology.

This paper presents a comparative study of two algorithms for detecting and analyzing 29 the characteristic shapes of reflection obtained as a result of Ground-Penetrating Radar (GPR) 30 scanning technology. The first algorithm is a sub-array processing method that uses direction-of31 arrival algorithms and the matched filter technique; this approach is implemented in SPOT-GPR 32 (release 1.0), a new freeware tool for the detection and localization of targets in radargrams. The 33 second algorithm, APEX, is based on machine learning and pattern recognition techniques and it 34 allows finding the coordinates of apexes and further characteristic points of hyperbolas in 35 radargrams. Both software solutions are implemented in MATLAB environment. As a first step, 36 we compare the accuracy of our algorithms when applied to synthetic data, calculated by using 37 the open-source finite-difference time-domain simulator gprMax; the considered scenarios are 38 two concrete cells hosting different metallic and dielectric targets. Then, we compare the 39 accuracy of our algorithms when applied to experimental data, recorded over district heating 40 pipes in a trench, with known geometry and depth of the pipes. For the latter scenario, we have 41 also generated a gprMax radargram, matching the geometry and scanning settings of the real one: 42 both algorithms are tested on this synthetic radargram, as well. Overall, both algorithms perform 43 well and rather uniformly in localizing the targets; the accuracy of the algorithms is at centimeter 44 level, which is sufficient in most applications.

With frequencies ranging from 5 MHz to a few GHz and a high sensitivity to electrical properties, GPR provides reflectivity images in a wide variety of contexts and scales: civil engineering, geology, hydrogeology, glaciology, archeology. However, in some cases, a better understanding of some subsurface processes requires a quantification of the physical parameters of the subsoil. For this purpose, inversion of full waveforms, a method initially developed for seismic exploration that exploits all the recorded signals, could prove effective. In this thesis, I propose methodological developments using a multiparameter inversion approach (dielectric permittivity and conductivity), for two-dimensional transmission configurations. These developments are then applied to a real data set acquired between boreholes.In a first part, I present the numerical method used to model the propagation of electromagnetic waves in a heterogeneous 2D environment, a much-needed element to carry out the process of imaging. Then, I introduce and study the potential of standard local optimization methods (nonlinear conjugate gradient, l-BFGS, Newton truncated in its Gauss-Newton and Exact-Newton versions) to fight the trade-off effects related to the dielectric permittivity and to the electrical conductivity. In particular, I show that effective decoupling is possible only with a sufficiently accurate initial model and the most sophisticated method (truncated Newton). As in the general case, this initial model is not available, it is necessary to introduce a scaling factor which distributes the relative weight of each parameter class in the inversion. In a realistic medium and for a cross-hole acquisition configuration, I show that the different optimization methods give similar results in terms of parameters decoupling. It is eventually the l-BFGS method that is used for the application to the real data, because of lower computation costs.In a second part, I applied the developed Full waveform inversion methodology to a set of real data acquired between two boreholes located in carbonate formations, in Rustrel (France, 84). This inversion is carried out together with a synthetic approach using a model representative of the studied site and with a similar acquisition configuration. This approach enables us to monitor and validate the observations and conclusions derived from data inversion. It shows that reconstruction of dielectrical permittivity is very robust. Conversely, conductivity estimation suffers from two major couplings: the permittivity and the amplitude of the estimated source. The derived results are successfully compared with independent data (surface geophysics and rock analysis on plugs) and provides a high resolution image of the geological formation. On the other hand, a 3D analysis confirms that 3D structures presenting high properties contrasts, such as the buried gallery present in our site, would require a 3D approach, notably to better explain the observed amplitudes.; Le radar géologique est une méthode d'investigation géophysique basée sur la propagation d'ondes électromagnétiques dans le sous-sol. That thesis aims to propose an assessment method of the concrete electromagnetic properties by using radar measurements in a context of building sustainability, by inverse problem. For that purpose Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) measurements are used as well as a numerical model of the radar device. The first two chapters of the thesis present the key concepts, the context of the study, as well as the history of the research on that topic in particular in our laboratory. Chapter 2 also expands those early works on the search of electromagnetic properties of concrete in depth. That preliminary work helped us to develop a measurement device that is more fitted to our needs. Chapter 3 presents a measurement campaign that was carried out by using a new measurement device on specially made reinforced concrete slabs whose water content is monitored. In that chapter a 3D model of the device is also described. That model allows us to simulate the measurements very precisely. Those simulations are a critical link on the inverse process. Chapter 4 details the formulation of the inverse problem for the case of concrete slabs saturated with water, which can be therefore considered to have homogeneous electromagnetic properties. The problem is solved by using an optimization algorithm based on Levenberg-Marquardt method. The values obtained by the inverse process are physically acceptable and independent of the values given to the unknowns when initializing the algorithm. Those values are the minimum of the cost function that computes the distance between measured and simulated electromagnetic fields. We then studied some strategies to reduce the computing time of the inverse process. A first approach consists in the use of a 2D simplified model of our device to initialize the 3D inversion with values closer to the searched solution. Another idea is to better take advantage of all the resources of a multiprocessor computer by implementing a parallel version of the 3D code. In chapter 5 we focus on the concrete slab with water content being an affine function of depth. We define the new parameters that represent the unknowns of our problem and we adapt the previous algorithm. Then we show that the inverse process gives satisfying results with regard to the dielectric permittivity only. We suggest some ways to improve the method. Finally we conclude that our method allows to retrieve the permittivity of the concrete, but not its conductivity. Nevertheless that result represents a significant step for the measuring of water content in reinforced concrete in particular when a gradient is present, by using radar measurements.; Les travaux de cette thèse concernent l'étude d'une méthode d'évaluation des constantes diélectriques du béton d'ouvrage à risque par une approche problème inverse. Pour cela des mesures radar de type GPR et un modèle électromagnétique de ces mêmes mesures seront utilisés. Les deux premiers chapitres de la thèse présentent les concepts clés, le contexte et un historique des travaux déjà réalisés dans le domaine. Le chapitre 2 propose en outre une adaptation des travaux déjà réalisés à la recherche de gradients de propriétés diélectriques dans le béton en profondeur. Cette recherche préliminaire nous a permis de redéfinir le processus de mesures pour le rendre plus adapté à nos besoins. Ainsi le chapitre 3 présente une campagne de mesure réalisée à l'aide d'un nouveau dispositif radar sur des corps d'épreuve conditionnés de telle sorte que la répartition de la teneur en eau soit maîtrisée. Dans ce chapitre, nous détaillons également un nouveau modèle numérique 3D du dispositif qui nous permet de simuler nos mesures de façon réaliste Ces simulations sont nécessaires à l'expression du problème inverse. à partir de ces mesures, dans le quatrième chapitre, nous définissons tout d'abord le problème inverse, puis en utilisant des mesures sur les corps d'épreuves saturés, pouvant être considérés comme homogènes d'un point de vue diélectrique, nous résolvons ce problème inverse par un algorithme d'optimisation basé sur celui de Levenberg-Marquardt. Les résultats obtenus par notre processus d'inversion sont cohérents avec les valeurs physiques que l'on pouvait attendre et sont indépendants des valeurs données à nos inconnues lors de l'initialisation. Ces résultats correspondent effectivement à un minimum de la fonction coût qui mesure la distance entre mesures et simulations. Nous avons ensuite étudié des stratégies pour diminuer le temps de calcul de notre processus d'inversion. Une première approche consiste à utiliser un modèle simplifié en 2D du dispositif, qui permet d'initialiser l'inversion 3D avec un point plus proche de la solution. Une autre idée consiste à utiliser au mieux les performances d'une machine multiprocesseurs en parallélisant le code 3D. Dans le chapitre 5 nous nous intéressons à des mesures sur des corps d'épreuve en béton dont la teneur en eau est une fonction affine de la profondeur. Dans ces conditions nous avons fait l'hypothèse, en première approche, que les constantes diélectriques suivent aussi ce type de loi. Après avoir redéfini les inconnues de notre problème inverse et adapté l'algorithme, nous montrons que le processus d'inversion fourni des résultats cohérents en ce qui concerne la permittivité diélectrique, mais insatisfaisant pour la conductivité. Après analyse de ces résultats nous avons proposé diverses pistes pour améliorer et valider la méthode d'inversion. Finalement en comparant l'ensemble des résultats, il apparaît que notre méthode d'inversion permet de caractériser des gradients de permittivité, mais pas de conductivité. Cela représente néanmoins une avancée significative pour la mesure de la teneur en eau dans les bétons, facteur principal influençant la constante diélectrique de ce matériau, dans le contexte du contrôle non destructif des ouvrages du génie civil.

Since budgets for the maintenance and repair of built heritage structures are very high, it is essential to implement reliable techniques for monitoring and diagnosis of structures to reduce these costs. There are many non-destructive testing (NDT) methods employing different technologies which are more or less expensive. The NDT methods allow the determination of the properties of the material giving also information about the condition of the structure, and the detection of inclusions or defects in the concrete. These techniques are known for their fast implementation and their high performance in-situ, but also by their non-intrusive nature, which makes it possible to limit the number of samples for destructive assessment. This makes them relevant for the monitoring and inspection of built heritage, since they can provide information related to the condition of a structure without any damage. In a reinforced concrete structure, the concrete cover is the most prone to multiple aggressions. The majority of the chemical reactions which cause the degradation of the structure occur in this layer, since with the presence of water this coating is considered as the penetration, transfer and fixing zone of aggressive agents present in the environment of the structure, thus enhancing for example the corrosion of the reinforcements. The water content of concrete is considered as a very important factor in the diagnosis of reinforced concrete structures, since it conditions the development of most pathologies related to structural degradation, thus affecting the durability of concrete. The precise location of the reinforcement in the construction is also an essential element for the diagnosis, but also to check the conformity of the constructive dispositions with the execution plans. In this research, we use GPR technology for the geometrical and physical characterization of reinforced concrete elements, through the development of an automatic algorithm, fast and without pre-requisites. The objectives of this study are to locate the rebars of the first reinforcing layer in the plane and depth and to determine the propagation velocity of the electromagnetic waves in the coating layer to estimate the water content of concrete.; Les budgets destinés à l'entretien et à la réparation du patrimoine bâti étant très élevés, il est primordial de mettre en place des techniques fiables de suivi et de diagnostic des ouvrages pour réduire ces dépenses. Il existe de nombreuses techniques de contrôle non destructif (CND) employant différentes technologies à des coûts plus ou moins abordables. Elles permettent la détermination des propriétés du matériau renseignant sur l'état de l'ouvrage, et la détection d'inclusions ou de défauts dans le béton. Ces techniques sont connues pour leur rapidité de mise en œuvre et leur grand rendement sur site, mais aussi par leur caractère non intrusif qui permet de limiter le nombre de prélèvements. Cela les rend pertinentes pour la surveillance et l'inspection du patrimoine bâti, puisqu'elles peuvent fournir des informations liées à l'état d'un ouvrage sans l'endommager. Dans un ouvrage en béton armé, la couche d'enrobage des armatures est la plus sujette à de multiples agressions. C'est dans cette couche qu'ont lieu la majorité des réactions chimiques qui causent la dégradation de l'ouvrage, puisqu'avec la présence d'eau cet enrobage est considéré comme la zone de pénétration, de transfert et de fixation des agents agressifs présents dans l'environnement de l'ouvrage, favorisant par exemple la corrosion des armatures. La teneur en eau du béton est considérée comme un facteur très important dans le diagnostic des structures en béton armé, puisqu'elle conditionne le développement de la plupart des pathologies liées à la dégradation des structures affectant ainsi la durabilité du béton. La localisation avec précision des aciers de renforcement est également un élément primordial pour le diagnostic, mais également pour vérifier la conformité des dispositions constructives par rapport aux plans d'exécution. Dans ces travaux de recherche, nous utilisons la technologie radar pour la caractérisation géométrique et physique des éléments en béton armé, cela par le développement d'un algorithme automatique, rapide et sans prérequis. Les objectifs de cette étude sont : de localiser en surface et en profondeur les aciers du premier lit d'armatures, et de déterminer la vitesse de propagation des ondes électromagnétiques dans le béton d'enrobage pour estimer sa teneur en eau.

Capacitive probes working at low frequency (around 33 MHz) and GPR (antenna nominal frequency of 1.5 GHz) could provide useful information for reinforced concrete structure monitoring. So, in order to better understand the phenomena involved by concrete carbonation, the results of 2 complementary experimental campaigns are analyzed. First, the dispersion curves of the complex permittivity are measured for carbonated and non-carbonated samples by an EM cylindrical coaxial cell. Due to carbonation, the permittivity decreases, and the dispersion is slightly reduced. Second, it is confirmed by GPR and capacitive measurements on slabs, that the real part of the permittivity decreases and that the radar signal amplitude increase.

International audience; In this paper the imaging of Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) scenario via Kirchhoff migration (KM) method is seen as a validation of the controlled experimental data and as a first step toward more elaborate imaging techniques. One of our goals is to have the possibility to acquire experimental data ina controlled laboratory environment. The bi-static GPR data is then acquired and validated by comparison with electromagnetic simulation. The imaging process is obtained using either the total field or the filtered one.

This chapter presents the interesting case study of the monitoring of the Viaduct Basento in Potenza (southern Italy). Two features make this case study fascinating. The first aspect is that Viaduct Basento is probably the most important and visionary architectural work of the famous structural engineer Sergio Musmeci. The second aspect concerns the application, almost unique in the scientific literature, of an integrated diagnosis approach combining a wide set of electromagnetic sensing technologies with advanced civil engineering analysis methodologies and tools.

Fractures are ubiquitous in the Earth’s crust. From the scale of a few cm to several km,fractures can act as conduits or barriers to fluid flow and play a major role in several processesand applications, including groundwater extraction, contaminant migration in fractured rock,underground storage of disposed nuclear waste and sequestration of carbon dioxide, as wellas geothermal heat migration. A fracture’s geometrical properties such as aperture variationsalong its plane influence fluid flow and transport within. Nevertheless, it is a challengingtask to statistically characterize aperture variations of a single fracture because these areoften self-affine; a property that implies similar patterns over several spatial scales. Classicalhydrological tests are spatially sparse and do not provide direct information about aperturevariations. This limitation can partly be overcome by hydrogeophysics, which combinesgeophysical methods with hydrological experiments. Here, we present experimental andtheoretical advances on the use of ground penetrating radar (GPR) alone and also combinedwith push-pull tests for improved fracture aperture characterization. On the theoreticalaspect we used analytical solutions to develop a modeling framework that simulates GPRreflections from fractures with heterogeneous aperture distributions, embedded in a uniformrock matrix. In the presence of aperture heterogeneity in a single fracture, we demonstratethat classical aperture-inference approaches that rely on uniform fracture properties leadto biased estimates of mean aperture. The modeling framework is suitable for GPR use infractured rock but is also suitable for other applications such as fracture imaging in concrete.On the experimental side, we present the first experiments in which the migration of asaline tracer is imaged during a push-pull test. The GPR data are informative about thedynamics of the tracer plume and the fractures involved in the experiment, but also highlightdensity effects that decrease our ability to infer natural flow dynamics and processes, such asambient flow. We address the density issue by introducing a neutrally-buoyant, yet electricallyconductive tracer, which consists of ethanol mixed with a saline tracer. A comparison ofresults from the two types of tracer tests demonstrates that the addition of ethanol diminishesthe density effect; we therefore suggest that neutrally buoyant tracers should be used inhydrogeophysics. Finally, we introduce a simultaneous modeling approach that can simulatethe combined experiments. The coupled model can be applied within a Markov-chain Monte-Carlo inversion of the data from the combined experiment to infer a fracture’s geometricproperties., Les fractures sont omniprésentes dans la croûte terrestre. Les expériences hydrologiques classiques par leur caractère discret surle terrain ne fournissent pas d’informations directes sur les variations d’ouvertures. Cettelimitation peut en partie être surmontée par l’hydrogéophysique qui combine des méthodesgéophysiques avec des expériences hydrologiques. Dans cette étude, nous présentons desavancées expérimentales et théoriques dédiées à l’utilisation du géoradar (GPR) seul et aussicombinées avec des essais push-pull afin de caractériser plus précisément l’ouverture desfractures. Sur le plan théorique, nous avons utilisé des solutions analytiques et développé uncadre de modélisation pour simuler les réflexions GPR dans le milieu fracturé. Les fracturesqui le composent sont caracterisées par des ouvertures hétérogènes mais sont intégréesdans une matrice de roche uniforme. En présence de cette hétérogénéité, nous avons dé-montré que les approches classiques qui reposent sur une ouverture de fracture uniforme,conduisent à des estimations fortement biaisées de l’ouverture moyenne. Ce cadre de mo-délisation est important pour l’utilisation du GPR dans un aquifèr fracturé mais convientégalement à d’autres applications, telles que l’imagerie des fractures dans le béton. Sur leplan expérimental, nous avons réalisé les premières expériences permettant la visualisationde la migration d’un traceur salin lors d’un test push-pull. Les données GPR obtenues ontpermis de mesurer la dynamique du panache du traceur et de décrire la nature des fractures.De plus, elles ont mis en évidence des effets de densité qui sont délétères pour les inférencesde la dynamique et des processus naturels d’écoulement, comme l’écoulement ambiant.Pour remédier à ces effets, des mesures ont été réalisées en ajoutant de l’éthanol au traceursalin afin d’obtenir une flottabilité neutre tout en conservant la conductivité électrique. Lacomparaison des résultats pour les deux types de traceurs montrent que l’ajout d’éthanolpermet d’éliminer les effets de densité. C’est pourquoi nous suggérons que des traceurs dedensité neutre soient utilisés pour les expériences hydrogéophysiques. Enfin, nous introdui-sons un modèle simultané qui peut simuler les expériences push-pull et GPR. Ce modèlepourrait permettre d’inférer les propriétés d’une fracture par les donn

Water content, chloride content and carbonation are three durability indicators that affect not only concrete properties and integrity, but also the ground penetrating radar (GPR) response. This article characterizes the effect of water and chloride contents as well as carbonation on the high-frequency electromagnetic (EM) properties of concretes using a coaxial-cylindrical cell operating within the large frequency band from 50 MHz to appprox. 1000 MHz, thus making possible to study dispersion effects on the complex relative permittivity of various concretes. During a second step, three specific designs of experiment (DoE), involving water and chloride contents, and then carbonation, are designed and studied in order to establish the relative sensitivity of these parameters compared to others in describing the mixes at three different frequencies. The complex dielectric properties are evaluated in the laboratory on many concrete specimens (numbering 24, 36 and 24 for the moisture, chloride and carbonation studies respectively). For these evaluations, the composition parameters consist of nature of aggregate, nature of cement, cement content and water-to-cement ratio (W/C) while conditions are described by degree of water saturation, chloride content or carbonation. In the case of the chloride and carbonation DoEs, the mixes are tested under both dry and saturated conditions. The models describing complex relative permittivity, in association with the designs of experiment, are multi-linear polynomials of the 4 or 5 identified engineering parameters, to be chosen depending on the study. The interpretation of datasets entails in independent calculation of model coefficients for the real and imaginary parts of relative permittivity, at the three chosen frequencies. This approach reveals the significant relationships existing between dielectric properties and composition parameters as well as their evolution versus frequency. The major results of this work can be summarized as follow: - The degree of water saturation amounts to about 80% on e′ r variability and 60% to 15% versus frequency on e″ r variability, for the first campaign. - The chloride content, while only visible in saturated mixes, represents approx. 40% and 50% with porosity (via the W/C ratio) accounting for some 30% and 40% on e′ r and e″ r variabilities, respectively. - Lastly, carbonation, while also only visible in saturated mixes, corresponds to a weight of about 14% in low frequencies and vanishes at high frequencies for e′ r variability; this amount rises to roughly 24% for e″ r variability.

International audience; Several sinkhole collapses were occurred in the many sites in urban areas and/or their rural periphery; in NE Algeria, in the last few years. The abrupt collapse causes damages to properties, infra-structures, and even lives. The most spectacular oneoccurred in February 2009 inside the Cheria city, Northwest of Tebessa department, with a diameter of more than a hundred meters. This abrupt collapse is due to a sudden rupture of the roof of a large underground karst cavity. It caused panic-stricken among the population living near the crater. In order to investigate the origin of this phenomenon, we combine several geophysical and geotechnical methods, such as Ground Penetrating Radar, Electrical Resistivity Tomography, Standard Penetration Test, Mechanical Drill Core, Cave Survey Photogrammetry, etc. It appears that each method may provide specific information. Their comparison allows to precise the results itself, the limits and the application field of each. Consequently a number of open karst voids and disturbed areas were detected in the study area. The results show that sinkholes originate from two different processes: a brutal collapse of karst voids located at shallow depth, by agravitational effect especially building surcharge on top of limestone. And progressive piping and erosion of the thick gravel cover, especially after storms making large depressions. The drawdown of the aquifer following intense pumping could have accelerated these processes. The extension plans of the study area could be established with this methodical acquaintance of the underground conditions of the karst cavities such as: occurrence, depth, geometry and dimensions.

The long-term performance of concrete structures is directly tied to two factors: concrete durability and strength. When assessing the durability of concrete structures, the study of the water penetration is paramount, because almost all reactions like corrosion, alkali-silica, sulfate, etc., which produce their deterioration, require the presence of water. Ground-penetrating radar (GPR) has shown to be very sensitive to water variations. On this basis, the objective of this experimental study is, firstly, to analyze the correlation between the water penetration depth in concrete samples and the GPR wave parameters. To do this, the samples were immersed into water for different time intervals and the wave parameters were obtained from signals registered when the antenna was placed on the immersed surface of the samples. Secondly, a procedure has been developed to be able to determine, from those signals, the reliability in the detection and location of waterfront depths. The results have revealed that GPR may have an enormous potential in this field, because excellent agreements were found between the correlated variables. International audience; In order to improve asset knowledge and avoid third part damages during road works, the localization of gas pipes in a non-destructive way has become a wide domain of research during these last years. The Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) is used to detect buried gas pipes. However it does not directly provide a 3D position but a reflection map also called B-scan that the user must interpret. In order to facilitate the B-scan interpretation, we propose to use a dictionary of theoretical pipe signatures. One of the most popular method to compute the coefficients is the sparse coding. Nevertheless, clutter which is noticeable by its horizontal shape makes difficult to decompose it into sparse coefficients with this dictionary. Then a low-rank matrix constraint which models the clutter is applied in order to decompose the useful signal into sparse coefficients in a blind source separation framework. Our method has been applied to simulated and real data acquired on a test area. The proposed method presents satisfying qualitative and quantitative results.

Mars has become one of the most visited planet in the past few decades. The data collected by instruments allowed to infer theplanet evolution, and it is now admitted that inthe past, Mars had a relatively warm and wetenvironment, auspicious for the emergence oflife as we know it. This is why one of the currentobjective of the missions to Mars is to study theplanet from an exobiological point of view: iflife arose on Mars, potential traces could befound into the subsurface, sheltered from thehostile surface. The ExoMars 2018 space mission will land onMars’ surface a rover, which will be equippedwith a complete instrumental payload for thesearch of life traces, as well as a drill capable ofcollecting samples at a depth of 2 meters. Thegeological context characterization willtherefore be essential to identify the mostinteresting places for potential life tracespreservation. The Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR)WISDOM (Water Ice Subsurface DepositObservation on Mars) and the neutron detectorADRON will be the only instruments capable ofobtaining information about the shallowsubsurface before the drilling operations. Thedata collected by WISDOM will provide thegeological deposits identification, which willhelp reconstructing the local history of thelanding site. This instrument developed in theFrench laboratory LATMOS (LaboratoireATmosphères, Milieux, Observations Spatiales)in collaboration with the LAB is a stepfrequencyradar that operates on a wide frequency band, from 0.5 GHz to 3 GHz: it wasdesigned to investigate the first 3 meters of thesubsurface with a vertical resolution of a fewcentimeters, and is currently tested in variousenvironments. This PhD thesis objective is to develop theinterpretation tools for WISDOM data by takingadvantage of the specific capacities of theinstrument to characterize the nature andstructure of the shallow subsurface, and to guidethe drill to suitable locations where potentialtraces of life could be preserved. This workconsequently requires both practical andtheoretical approaches, with the development ofprocessing chains, analytical and numericalmodels to simulate the instrument, but also todefine tests in well-known environments as wellas field tests in various natural places. The ideais to create a WISDOM database in a variety ofgeological contexts to allow the comparisonwith Martian data. A full interpretation of the WISDOM data alsorequires the estimation of the geological units’dielectric characteristics. We thereforedeveloped two “quantitative” methods thatallow the retrieval of the dielectric constantvalue at the surface and at various depths. Ageometrical approach to reconstruct the shallowsubsurface was also initiated to help tounderstand the deposits processes. A methodtaking advantage of the GPR specific antennasystem was developed to estimate the scatterers’relative position compared to the radar trajectoryalong profiles, allowing the subsurfacereconstruction in 3 dimensions for an optimalguidance of the ExoMars rover drill., La planète Mars est devenue au cours de ces dernières décennies l’un des objets les plus visités de notre système solaire. Les différents instruments envoyés pour l’étudier nous ont permis de reconstruire partiellement son histoire, et l’on sait aujourd’hui que dans son passé, la planète rouge a connu une période au climat relativement chaud et humide, permettant à l’eau liquide de perdurer en surface et dans le sous-sol. Le parallèle avec les conditions sur Terre au moment supposé de l’apparition de la vie nous amène à aborder Mars d’un point de vue exobiologique : si la vie a émergé sur cette planète, des traces potentielles sont susceptibles d’être trouvées dans le sous-sol, à l’abri de la surface.La mission ExoMars, programmée pour 2018,enverra sur la surface de la planète un rover équipé d’une suite instrumentale complète pour la recherche de traces de vie, passé ou présente,ainsi qu’une foreuse capable de prélever des échantillons jusqu’à 2 mètres de profondeur. L’objectif de cette thèse est de développer les outils d’interprétation des données du GPR WISDOM en tentant d'exploiter au mieux les ressources de l'instrument pour caractériser la nature et la structure du sous-sol,apporter des contraintes sur l’histoire géologique du site d’Oxia Planum, sélectionné pour cette mission, et pour guider la foreuse d’Exo Marsvers des sites d’intérêt d’un point de vue exobiologique. Ce travail nécessite donc une approche multiple, pratique et théorique, qui passe par le développement d’outils de traitement de données, par la mise au point de modèles analytiques et l’utilisation de modèles numériques pour la modélisation de l’instrument,ou encore la définition de tests et de campagnes de mesures, afin de créer une base de données sur des environnements variés, qui pourront ensuite être comparées aux données martiennes.Une interprétation complète des données acquises avec WISDOM passe également par l’estimation des paramètres diélectriques des différentes unités géologiques identifiées. Nous avons ainsi développé deux méthodes «quantitatives », qui permettent d’estimer la constante diélectrique en surface et à différentes profondeurs à partir des données. Une approche plus géométrique pour « reconstituer » le sous solle plus précisément possible, éventuellement en 3 dimensions, et pour comprendre les processus de dépôts qui ont abouti à la morphologie observée sur les radargrammes a également été initiée. Grâce à la mise au point d’une méthode basée sur l’amplitude des signatures des diffuseurs en fonction de la configuration polarimétrique des antennes, nous avons estimé la position relative des objets par rapport au déplacement du radar le long d’unprofil et ainsi permis la reconstitution du sous-solen 3 dimensions.Ceci permettra à terme un guidage optimal de la foreuse dans le contexte d’ExoMars.

Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) is also used to detect buried gas pipes. However it does not directly provide a 3D position but a reflection map called B-scan that the user must interpret. In this paper, we propose a novel method to automatically get the position of gas pipes with GPR acquisitions. This method uses a dictionary of theoretical pipe signatures. The correlation between each atom from the dictionary and the B-scan is used as feature in a two part supervised learning scheme. Our method has been applied to real data acquired on a test area and in real condition. The proposed method presents satisfying qualitative and quantitative results compared to other methods.

International audience; The WISDOM (Water Ice Subsurface Deposits Observations on Mars) Ground Penetrating Radar has been selected to be part of the ExoMars 2018 exobiological rover mission. A prototype has been tested during the Mars Simulation organized by the Austrian Space Forum in Alpine ice caves in Dachstein, Austria. This campaign provided the opportunity to validate methods developed to process WISDOM’s data in a well-documented environment and to retrieve geometrical and quantitative information about the 3D structure and the electromagnetic properties of the subsurface. We estimate the ice thickness in different locations inside the ice caves, and show that this ice is formed of fine strata with different properties. Data analysis allows reconstructing the bedrock in a 3D environment where a complete survey was performed.

WOS:000393044500027; International audience; GPR is an inspection technique characterized by a high speed of implementation. It is well adapted for the assessment of reinforced concrete structures. One of the main applications is for the 3D localization of reinforcement. Nevertheless for achieving a good accuracy, the localization in depth needs post processing which requires a good level of expertise. The objective of this work is to propose a novel measurement procedure and an adapted post processing for 3D localization of the first layer of steel reinforcement in reinforced concrete and for water content assessment of cover concrete. This methodology can be fully done without any processing expertise. The measurements are done using two GPR antennas with a central frequency of 1.5 GHz, in a bi-static configuration. Both antennas are disposed in a single box equipped with an encoding wheel. The transmitter (T1)-receivers (R1) and (R2) distances are constants, such as (T1)-(R1) is 5.9 cm and (T1)-(R2) is 11.9 cm. We developed an original algorithm to analyse and process recorded radar signals which provides the position in the plane and depth of the first layer of reinforcement in slabs and walls. This algorithm also allows calculating the velocity of electromagnetic waves in concrete that will be used to quantify the water content. This communication aims to present the performance of this algorithm. The results show that it enables the localization of the reinforcement in depth with an error lower than 4%. Measurement processing is very fast and does not require any knowledge neither of the material nor of the geometry.

Asymmetric cell division is a fundamental mechanism essential in all organisms to assure cell diversity, stem cell renewal and cellular identity maintenance. It is relying on proper mitotic spindle positioning because it dictates the cell division plan. In C. elegans one-cell embryos, the first division is asymmetric and gives rise to two daughter cells of unequal size and fate. It occurs in two steps: pronuclei centration during prophase and spindle posterior displacement during anaphase. During anaphase, the mitotic spindle undergoes transverse oscillations that are more pronounced for the posterior than the anterior pole. These movements are controlled by pulling forces acting on astral microtubules. The force generators are identified and are evolutionary conserved. A complex made of Gα proteins, linked to GPR (a GoLoco containing protein, the LGN/Pins homologues), LIN-5 (a coiled-coil protein, the NuMA/Mud homologues) and dynein is thought to be anchored at the cortex and activated at the onset of mitosis to pull on the spindle. We identified variations in spindle trajectories by analyzing the outwardly similar one-cell stage embryo of a close relative of C. elegans, C. briggsae. Compared to C. elegans, C. briggsae embryos exhibit an anterior shifting of nuclei in prophase and reduced anaphase spindle oscillations. By combining physical perturbations and mutant analysis in both species, we show that differences can be explained by inter-species changes in the regulation of the cortical Gα/GPR/LIN-5 complex. However, we uncover that in both species 1) a conserved positional switch controls the onset of spindle oscillations, 2) GPR posterior localization may set this positional switch, and 3) the maximum amplitude of spindle oscillations is determined in part by the time spent in the oscillating phase. Interestingly, GPR is poorly conserved at the amino acid level between these species. We use these variants to correlate phenotypes, GPR localization and sequence divergence to identify GPR regulatory elements. To this end, we performed protein replacement between species, as well as analysis of protein chimeras. Finally we tried to use optogenetics in order to control GPR localisation temporally and analyze the consequences on pronuclei and spindle movements during the first division. By investigating microevolution of a subcellular process, we identified new mechanisms that are instrumental to decipher spindle positioning.; La division cellulaire asymétrique est un mécanisme fondamental qui assure la diversité cellulaire, le renouvellement des cellules souches et le maintien de l’identité cellulaire. Elle dépend du bon positionnement du fuseau mitotique car il dicte le plan de division des cellules.La première division des embryons de C. elegans, est asymétrique et génère deux cellules fille de taille et devenir différents. Elle consiste en deux étapes : la centration des pronoyaux en prophase puis le déplacement postérieur du fuseau mitotique en anaphase. Lors de l'anaphase le fuseau subit des oscillations transverses plus marquées au pôle postérieur qu’au pôle antérieur. Ces mouvements sont contrôlés par des forces de traction agissant sur les microtubules astraux. Les générateurs de force ont été moléculairement identifiés et sont évolutivement très conservés. Un complexe composé de protéines Gα, liées à GPR (protéine à domaine GoLoco, homologue de LGN/Pins), à LIN-5 (protéine à domaine super-enroulé, homologue de NuMA/Mud) et à la dynéine serait ancré au cortex et activé en début de mitose pour tirer le fuseau.En analysant la première division d’une espèce proche de C. elegans : C. briggsae, on observe des variations de trajectoire du fuseau. Les embryons de C. briggsae présentent un décalage antérieur des noyaux en prophase et les oscillations du fuseau sont réduites en anaphase. La combinaison de perturbations physiques et l'analyse de mutants dans ces espèces, ont montré que ces différences s’expliquent par des changements dans la régulation du complexe ternaire. Mais, nous avons découvert que dans les deux espèces 1) un switch positionnel conservé contrôle le démarrage des oscillations du fuseau, 2) la localisation postérieure de GPR détermine ce switch positionnel, et 3) l'amplitude maximum des oscillations est déterminée en partie par le temps passé dans la phase oscillatoire.Nous avons utilisés ces variants pour corréler les phénotypes, la localisation de GPR et la divergence de séquence entre espèces afin d’identifier les éléments de régulation de cette protéine. Nous avons alors échangé les protéines et construits des protéines chimères entre les deux espèces. Enfin, par optogénétique, nous avons essayé de contrôler la localisation temporelle de GPR et analyser les conséquences sur les mouvements des noyaux et du fuseau.En étudiant la microévolution d'un processus sous-cellulaire, nous avons identifié de nouveaux mécanismes qui contribuent à la compréhension du positionnement du fuseau.

This paper presents the numerical method, generalized propagation-inside-layer expansion (GPILE), to calculate the scattered electromagnetic field by any stratified 1-D medium composed of three random rough interfaces separating homogeneous media. GPILE is a generalization of the propagation-inside-layer expansion method, which considers only two interfaces. Both methods rely on the rigorous implementation of the Maxwell equations, with a simple matrix formulation and which have a straightforward physical interpretation. In particular, this method allows us to distinguish the primary echo of the upper surface and also the multiple echoes arising from the intermediate and lower interfaces. This method is applied in this paper to simulate the ground-penetrating radar (GPR) signal at nadir. The simulated signals are analyzed to study the sensitivity of the GPR signal to any material debonding within the pavement layered structure.

By combining physical perturbations and mutant analysis in both species, we show that differences can be explained by inter-species changes in the regulation of the cortical Gα/GPR/LIN-5 complex. However, we uncover that in both species 1) a conserved positional switch controls the onset of spindle oscillations, 2) GPR posterior localization may set this positional switch, and 3) the maximum amplitude of spindle oscillations is determined in part by the time spent in the oscillating phase. Interestingly, GPR is poorly conserved at the amino acid level between these species. We use these variants to correlate phenotypes, GPR localization and sequence divergence to identify GPR regulatory elements. To this end, we performed protein replacement between species, as well as analysis of protein chimeras. Finally we tried to use optogenetics in order to control GPR localisation temporally and analyze the consequences on pronuclei and spindle movements during the first division. By investigating microevolution of a subcellular process, we identified new mechanisms that are instrumental to decipher spindle positioning., La division cellulaire asymétrique est un mécanisme fondamental qui assure la diversité cellulaire, le renouvellement des cellules souches et le maintien de l’identité cellulaire. Elle dépend du bon positionnement du fuseau mitotique car il dicte le plan de division des cellules.La première division des embryons de C. elegans, est asymétrique et génère deux cellules fille de taille et devenir différents. Elle consiste en deux étapes : la centration des pronoyaux en prophase puis le déplacement postérieur du fuseau mitotique en anaphase. Lors de l'anaphase le fuseau subit des oscillations transverses plus marquées au pôle postérieur qu’au pôle antérieur. Ces mouvements sont contrôlés par des forces de traction agissant sur les microtubules astraux. Les générateurs de force ont été moléculairement identifiés et sont évolutivement très conservés. Un complexe composé de protéines Gα, liées à GPR (protéine à domaine GoLoco, homologue de LGN/Pins), à LIN-5 (protéine à domaine super-enroulé, homologue de NuMA/Mud) et à la dynéine serait ancré au cortex et activé en début de mitose pour tirer le fuseau.En analysant la première division d’une espèce proche de C. elegans : C. briggsae, on observe des variations de trajectoire du fuseau. Les embryons de C. briggsae présentent un décalage antérieur des noyaux en prophase et les oscillations du fuseau sont réduites en anaphase. La combinaison de perturbations physiques et l'analyse de mutants dans ces espèces, ont montré que ces différences s’expliquent par des changements dans la régulation du complexe ternaire. Mais, nous avons découvert que dans les deux espèces 1) un switch positionnel conservé contrôle le démarrage des oscillations du fuseau, 2) la localisation postérieure de GPR détermine ce switch positionnel, et 3) l'amplitude maximum des oscillations est déterminée en partie par le temps passé dans la phase oscillatoire.Nous avons utilisés ces variants pour corréler les phénotypes, la localisation de GPR et la divergence de séquence entre espèces afin d’identifier les éléments de régulation de cette protéine. Nous avons alors échangé les protéines et construits des protéines chimères entre les deux espèces. Enfin, par optogénétique, nous avons essayé de contrôler la localisation temporelle de GPR et analyser les conséquences sur les mouvements des noyaux et du fuseau.En étudiant la microévolution d'un processus sous-cellulaire, nous avons identifié de nouveaux mécanismes qui contribuent à la compréhension du positionnement du fuseau.

We must increase our knowledge of these transfer processes to improve research on climate change. To reach these objectives, we must obtained global information on the hydrological states and properties of the land-surface. The microwave remote sensing instruments are an adequate way to provide soil moisture information at large scale. Microwave remote sensing data are linked to the soil moisture but also to the roughness, texture and the physicochemical properties of the soil. In that context, the objective of this study is to develop an integrated approach to estimate effective electromagnetic properties of soils layers using ground-penetrating radar (GPR), L-band radiometer, dielectric laboratory measurements, modelling approaches and in situ measurements of essential state variables.

International audience; Organic-rich soils were collected from the HOBE (Hydrological Observatory) test site in the Skjern River Catchment (Denmark). The soil structure was then reconstructed at the TERENO (Terrestrial Environmental Observatories) test site Selhausen (Germany) in a controlled field laboratory for ground-based microwave remote sensing in order to characterize electromagnetic properties of the different soil layers and the vegetation. GPR and L-band radiometer measurements were performed above the soils during two months in order to realize a large range of moisture conditions. GPR data were modeled using full-wave layered medium Green's functions while radiometer data were simulated using a two-stream radiative transfer model. Complex dielectric permittivities were retrieved from GPR and radiometer data by inverting the associated models. The remote estimations of the dielectric permittivity were compared to laboratory measurements carried out at the IMS laboratory (Laboratoire de l'Intégration du Matériau au Système, France) using two different methods, the small perturbation methods with resonant cavity and the wave-guide method. The results show rather large discrepancies between the field measurements of the real part of the dielectric permittivity and the laboratory measurements. For the imaginary part of the dielectric permittivity, laboratory measurements are well reproduced by the field radiometer measurements, with a reasonable assumption made for the soil surface roughness. This study provides valuable insights into the characterization of organic soils, which can be used to improve the performance of the space-borne remote sensing data products of such soils.

National audience; The evaluation of moisture and chloride content of concrete is a crucial phase for the diagnosis of corroded structures in the context of heritage preservation. The use of non-destructive techniques (NDT) allows to carrying out an effective diagnosis. Electromagnetic waves in the microwaves frequencies are recognized as a powerful tool for moisture evaluation of dielectric materials as concrete. The goal of this study is to develop an optimal tool for the evaluation of moisture content on real structures based on electromagnetic waves at frequencies range of 1 to 3 GHz. Numerical simulations of patch antennas were done for optimal design and frequency. A comparison with measurements in air and on concrete having various moisture contents indicated good effectiveness of the developed antennas.

International audience; Ground penetrating radar (GPR) and electric resistivity tomography (ERT) are well assessed and accurate geophysical methods for the investigation of subsurface geological sections. In this paper, we present the joint exploitation of these methods at the Montagnole (French Alps) experimental site with the final aim to study and monitor effects of possible catastrophic rockslides in transport infrastructures. The overall goal of the joint GPR–ERT deployment considered here is the careful monitoring of the subsurface structure before and after a series of high energetic mechanical impacts at ground level. It is known that factors such as the ambiguity of geophysical field examination, the complexity of geological scenarios and the low signal-to-noise ratio affect the possibility of building reliable physical–geological models of subsurface structure. Here, we applied to the GPR and ERT methods at the Montagnole site, recent advances in wavelet theory and data mining. The wavelet approach was specifically used to obtain enhanced images (e.g. coherence portraits) resulting from the integration of the different geophysical fields. This methodology, based on the matching pursuit combined with wavelet packet dictionaries, permitted us to extract desired signals under different physical–geological conditions, even in the presence of strongly noised data. Tools such as complex wavelets employed for the coherence portraits, and combined GPR–ERT coherency orientation angle, to name a few, enable non-conventional operations of integration and correlation in subsurface geophysics to be performed. The estimation of the above-mentioned parameters proved useful not only for location of buried inhomogeneities but also for a rough estimation of their electromagnetic and related properties. Therefore, the combination of the above approaches has allowed us to set up a novel methodology, which may enhance the reliability and confidence of each separate geophysical method and their integration.

Collecting information on past strong earthquakes is crucial to anticipate the characteristics of the future strong earthquakes that threaten us. A part of the traces left by the past earthquakes remains hidden in the first few meters of the ground. Until now, paleoseismological trenches across faults have been used to search for these traces. Though relevant, this method is destructive and allows, at best, detecting the few most recent events. The objective of my PhD work, done in the framework of the ANR project CENTURISK, was to develop a novel form of paleoseismology, of geophysical type, based on multi-frequency, pseudo-3D GPR surveys. The idea is to image at high-resolution the architecture of the first ≈ 10 m of the ground over wide areas along active faults, in order to detect the possibly buried traces, especially the offsets, produced by the last 10-20 strong earthquakes on the fault. We have first developed the approach by adapting the acquisition and processing of GPR data to the selected targets. We have then applied the approach on some of the largest active strike-slip faults in New Zealand, where sedimentation conditions are ideal. Twelve sites were investigated, 5 of them are presented in this work. At each site, we first analyzed the surface morphology in the greatest detail on LiDAR data and high resolution GPS DEMs. This analysis allowed us to identify all the morphological markers preserved at the ground surface, and being offset by the fault. We measured these surface offsets, doing so collecting a dense population of cumulative displacement values. We then surveyed each site with 40-60, 100 and 250 MHz, hundreds of meters long GPR profiles, parallel to the fault and regularly spaced by 5-10 m on either side of the fault trace. At each site, the processing of the GPR data revealed a large number of buried markers – palaeosurfaces and incision features, hidden in the first 5-10 m of the ground. Most of the buried markers were observed cut and laterally displaced by the fault, and these offsets could be measured. The measures provide a dense collection of cumulative offsets on each investigated fault, generally 10-20 times more than ever reported. To analyze these dense surface and sub-surface data collections, we used statistical methods made to define and retain only the best constrained offset values. These best values are separated by slip increments that are directly related to the successive coseismic slips that we search. The entire analysis revealed that the offsets measured in the sub-surface fill the gaps in the surface record, and that the surface offsets are systematically lower than those measured in the sub-surface on the same markers. Additionally, the buried record is longer than the surface record. Applied to the Hope Fault, our novel approach allowed identifying the last 30-35 strong earthquakes that broke the fault, each had produced a lateral offset at surface of 3.2 ± 1 m and got a magnitude ≈ Mw 7.0-7.4. Applied to the Wellington Fault (at Te Marua site), the approach allowed identifying a minimum of 15 past strong earthquakes, each had produced a lateral offset at surface of 3.7 ± 1.7 m and got a magnitude ≈ Mw 6.9-7.6. My PhD work thus confirms the great potential of pseudo-3D Ground Penetrating Radar survey to detect a significant part of the fault seismic history, and thus to provide critical information to determine the displacements and magnitudes of the past strong earthquakes on faults. Applied to seismogenic faults worldwide, in complement to surface approaches, the geophysical GPR paleoseismology should help better assessing seismic hazard.; Acquérir des informations sur les forts séismes passés est crucial pour anticiper les caractéristiques des forts séismes futurs. Une partie des traces laissées par les forts séismes passés sont enfouies dans les premiers mètres du sol et sont en général révélées par des tranchées de quelques mètres de profondeur ouvertes à travers les failles sismogènes. Bien que pertinente, cette méthode est destructive. L'objectif a été de développer une nouvelle forme de paléosismologie, non destructive, basée sur l'imagerie géoradar pseudo 3D, capable de retrouver ces traces enfouies des séismes passés. Dans ce travail, cinq sites d’étude sont présentés, situés le long de failles actives décrochantes de Nouvelle Zélande. Notre nouvelle approche débute, dans un premier temps, par l’analyse ‘classique’ de la morphologie de surface à partir de données LiDAR et de MNT GPS haute résolution. Ceci nous permet d’identifier l'ensemble des marqueurs morphologiques préservés à la surface et les déplacements horizontaux qu’ils ont enregistrés. Dans un second temps, l’analyse des profils GPR pseudo-3D acquis en chacun des sites révèlent des réflecteurs principaux dans les premiers 5-10 m du sol recoupés par un grand nombre de marqueurs morphologiques, partiellement ou totalement invisibles en surface. La plupart de ces marqueurs enfouis sont coupés et décalés par la faille considérée. Les mesures de ces décalages fournissent des collections denses de déplacements cumulés sur chacune des failles investiguées avec généralement un nombre de mesures effectués en sub-surface 10 à 20 fois plus important qu’en surface et couvrant une plus large gamme de valeurs. L’application sur la faille de Hope de cette approche a notamment permis de mettre en évidence un déplacement latéral caractéristique de 3.2 ± 1 m lors des 30-35 derniers forts séismes. Ce travail démontre le potentiel de l'imagerie géoradar pseudo-3D à détecter une partie de l'histoire sismique des failles et, ce faisant, à fournir des informations sur les caractéristiques des forts séismes passés.

The objective of this paper is threefold. First, a parametric study is performed to evaluate the absorption-dispersion effect on ground penetrating radar (GPR) waveform spectra. Reference data for this evaluation correspond to synthetic GPR signals generated by one of the frequency power-law variants. The result of this paper justifies the need for processing within the spectral domain in order to calculate either propagation velocities or complex permittivities. Second, an innovative technique for extracting the electromagnetic (EM) dispersion of hydraulic concrete using GPR is presented. This technique is based on a coupling between modified forms of the 2-D Fourier transform and estimation methods of quality factors; moreover, it allows identifying dispersion phenomena as a variation in the complex permittivity as a function of frequency. For each method, an analytical validation is carried out on simulated propagation signals. For the third objective, an experimental study is conducted in order to correlate the EM dispersion indicator with both physical and hydrical characteristics of the various concrete mixtures. The complex permittivities obtained according to this “intermethod coupling” (applied to GPR measurements) are compared with those obtained from semidestructive measurements on cores using a cylindrical transmission line considered as the reference. This procedure makes it possible to derive trends that provide information on the conditioning state of the studied media.
