A set of rare earth orthosilicate and garnet scintillators were grown by the micropulling down (μ-PD) and Czochralski methods. Ce-doped Lu2xGd2 2xSiO5 (LGSO:Ce) fibers were grown by the micro-pulling down (μ-PD) method for the first time. In order to determine the optimal activator concentration with regard to the best scintillating parameters, cerium concentration in the melt was varied within 0.01-1.5 at.%. A set of results on optical and scintillation characteristics of the grown fibers with the different activator content was determined and discussed. Distribution of Gd3+ and Ce3+ in LGSO:Ce structure was compared to the Czochralski grown crystals. Spatial distribution of cations across LGSO:Ce scintillation shaped crystals grown by the micro-pulling-down method is studied using wide-field microscopy under simultaneous excitation of both cerium-related centers and confocal microscopy under selective excitation of Ce3+ in CeO6 crystallographic sites. Undoped fibers of Lu3Al5O12 (LuAG) and doped by Ce3+, Pr3+, mixed (Lu,Y)3Al5O12 (LuYAG) and Y3Al5O12 (YAG) both doped by Ce3+ were produced to evaluate a possibility of their potential use in the new dual-calorimeter planned to operate in the upgraded Large Hadron Collider in CERN. The choice of grown crystals was made to detect scintillation (activated materials) and Cherenkov radiation (LuAG). Growth conditions for the improvement of fibers quality were selected basing on measurements of attenuation length of the fibers. The activator segregation coefficient in LuAG:Ce and LuYAG:Ce fibers was evaluated by the cathodoluminescence measurements. The effect of annealing and radiation damage was studied. The good productivity of the grown fibers was verified on the test beam calorimeter. Structure and scintillation yield of Y3(Al1 xGax)5O12:Ce solid solution crystals are studied. Crystals are grown from melt by the Czochralski method. Distribution of host cations in crystal lattice is determined. The trend of light output at Al/Ga substitution in Y3(Al1-xGax)5O12:Ce is determined. Light output in mixed crystals reaches 130% comparative to Ce-doped yttrium–aluminum garnet. Les cristaux LuAG ont été choisis dans le but de détecter la scintillation (ion activateur) et les radiations Chernkov. Pour confirmer l'amélioration de la qualité des fibres cristallines à travers les conditions de croissance cristalline, nous avons réalisé des mesures d'atténuation le long des fibres. La bonne reproductivité des fibres a été vérifiée par des tests faisceau en conditions de calorimètre. Nous avons étudié la structure et la scintillation dans les cristaux appartenant à la solution solide Y3(Al1-xGax)5O12 :Ce. Les cristaux ont été tirés à partir de l'état liquide par la méthode Czochralski. La distribution des cations de la matrice a été étudiée. L'effet de la substitution du Al/Ga dans Y3(Al1-xGax)5O12 :Ce sur le rendement de scintillation a été déterminé. Le rendement de scintillation a atteint 130 % par rapport au grenat aluminium-yttrium dopé Ce. L'évolution des propriétés de luminescence en fonction de la substitution al/Ga a été étudiée

The effective field torque of an yttrium-iron-garnet film on the spin accumulation in an attached Pt film is measured by the spin-Hall magnetoresistance (SMR). As a result, the magnetization direction of a ferromagnetic insulating layer can be measured electrically. Experimental transverse and longitudinal resistances are well described by the theoretical model of SMR in terms of the direct and inverse spin-Hall effect, for different Pt thicknesses [3, 4, 8 and 35nm]. Adopting a spin-Hall angle of Pt $\theta_{SH}=0.08$, we obtain the spin diffusion length of Pt ($\lambda=1.1\pm0.3$nm) as well as the real ($G_r=(7\pm3)\times10^{14}\Omega^{-1}$m$^{-2}$) and imaginary part ($G_i=(5\pm3)\times10^{13}\Omega^{-1}$m$^{-2}$) of the spin-mixing conductance and their ratio ($G_r/G_i=16\pm4$)., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

International audience; Infrared spectroscopy is a powerful technique for the characterization of minerals, permitting insights into their structural and thermodynamic properties. The intrinsic complexity of mineral solid solutions makes the interpretation of their spectroscopic data a challenging task.In this work, the IR vibrational spectra of andradite-grossular (Ca3Fe2Si3O12–Ca3Al2Si3O12) solid solutions were simulated at the ab initio level with the CRYSTAL09 code by using a large all-electron Gaussian-type basis set and the B3LYP hybrid functional. All the 23 symmetry-independent configurations resulting from the substitution of 1 to 8 Fe atoms with Al atoms in the 16a octahedral site of the andradite primitive cell were considered. The IR active transverse optical frequencies and their intensities were computed. Graphical representation of the spectra, animation of the modes and isotopic substitution of the cations were used as additional interpretation tools. The dominant high-frequency modes, corresponding to Si-O stretching motions, show a simple linear behavior of both frequencies and intensities with respect to the binary composition; this trend is related to the linear behavior of the mean lattice parameter. Also the frequencies of the low-energy bands show, roughly speaking, a linear dependence on composition; however, the behavior of the dominant intensities is more complicated and strongly connected to the Al and Fe atomic fraction. When considering different possible structures at fixed composition, some spectral features display a dependence upon short-range Y cation ordering. Overall, we show how ab initio calculations permit to analyze complex systems such as solid solutions, establishing relations among structure and properties and providing critical and robust interpretations to the experimental findings.

Single crystals of LuAG:Ce, LuAG:Pr and un-doped LuAG were grown by the vertical Bridgman method and studied for radiation hardness under gamma-rays with doses in the range 10–10 5 Gy ( 60 Co). A wide absorption band peaking at around 600 nm springs up in all three types of crystals after the irradiations. The second band peaking at around 375 nm appears in both LuAG:Pr and un-doped LuAG. Compositional variations have been done to reveal the spectral behavior of induced color centers in more detail and to understand their origin. Similarities in behavior of Yb 2+ centers in as-grown garnets are found, indicating that radiation induced color centers can be associated with residual trace amounts of Yb present in the raw materials. Un-doped LuAG and LuAG:Ce demonstrate moderate radiation hardness (the induced absorption coefficients being equal to 0.05–0.08 cm −1 for accumulated doses of 10 3 –10 4 Gy), while LuAG:Pr is less radiation hard. The ways to improve the radiation hardness are discussed.

Recently in the field of spintronics, spin transfer torque and spin pumping phenomena in a hybrid ferrimagnetic insulator (Yttrium Iron Garnet: YIG)/normal metal (Platinum: Pt) system have been demonstrated 1 . Since this observation, the actuation, detection and control of the magnetization and spin currents in such systems have attracted much attention from both theoretical and experimental point of view. Spin pumping in a ferromagnetic (NiFe)/normal metal system has been intensively studied as a function of the stoichiometric ratio between nickel and iron atoms 2 , the spin current detector material 3 , and the ferromagnet dimensions 4,5 . Only a few research groups 6–8 have investigated experimentally and theoretically the dc voltage generation (induced by inverse spin-Hall effect) in a NiFe/Pt system as a function of the the thickness of the spin current detector and the ferromagnetic material, at a fixed microwave frequency. To date, no systematic studies of the spin/charge current (charge/spin) conversion in a YIG/Pt system have been presented as a function of the Pt thickness. In this paper, we show the first experimental observation of the Pt thickness dependence in a hybrid system YIG/Pt of the inverse spin-Hall effect (ISHE) from spin pumping, actuated at the resonant condition by using a microstrip line in reflection over a large frequency range and for different rf powers. The used insulating material consists of a single-crystal (111) Y3Fe5O12 (YIG) film grown on a (111) Gd3Ga5O12 (GGG) substrate by liquid-phase-epitaxy (LPE). We have prepared nine samples with different thicknesses of Pt (1.5, 6.0, 9.0, 11.5, 16, 22.5, 33, 62, and 115 nm) deposited by dc sputtering. Fig.1 a) shows a schematic of the samples. Recently non-uniform distribution of dopants in transparent optical ceramics was observed. It was demonstrated that dopants with low segregation coefficients (K3+ and Y3+ host cations in Ce3+-doped (Gd,Y)3Al5O12 ceramic sample demonstrated that no detectable redistribution of Gd3+ and Y3+ cations in the vicinity of the grain boundaries was detected. These results are in good agreement with comparable segregation behavior of Gd3+ and Y3+ [K(Y3+)≈K(Gd3+)] when the garnet solidification is performed from liquid phase. This observation also confirms qualitative match of segregation in liquid and solid states.

This paper characterizes the inhomogeneous rare earth activator distribution across grain boundaries in transparent rare earth doped optical ceramics. Ce3+has been selected due to its high intensity fluorescence in visible range under blue or UV excitations, especially in (Gd,Y)3Al5O12disordered garnet ceramic for scintillator application. Optical spectroscopy and visualization of grains and grain boundaries based on spatially resolved techniques as imaging confocal microscopy (ICM) and transmission electronic microscopy (TEM) have been used for 0.5% Ce3+-doped (Gd,Y)3Al5O12ceramic. A strong Ce3+segregation and spatial distribution between grains and grain boundaries were observed.

The granulite-facies anorthositic unit on northwestern Holsnøy, within the Bergen Arcs, Norway, was buried and partially eclogitized at depth during the caledonian orogenesis. The protolith and the high-pressure rocks and structures were remarkably preserved throughout exhumation, enabling us to study in detail eclogitization processes and their consequences for exhumation and deep crustal movements. Inherited garnets, although mostly preserved through eclogite-facies transformations, were fractured and reequilibrated by diffusion from their rims. Back-scattered electron (BSE) and electron microprobe analysis of the different garnet generations involved highlights the very slow diffusion of Ca compared to Fe and Mg, impeding the reequilibration of inherited garnets in grossular content during the eclogite-facies event. The systematic distribution of the orientations of the fractures cutting through inherited garnets shows that fracturing results from the volume decrease associated with eclogite facies reactions. Small-scale propagation of eclogitized domains involves combination of fluid diffusion, metamorphic reactions and mineral fracturing. Eclogite-facies deformation is very consistent at the scale of the studied zone (5*5 km), and results therefore from the action of large-scale tectonic stresses, rather than local stresses related to metamorphic reactions. When the unit is restored to its original position at depth within the caledonian slab, the top-to-the-east sense of shear is interpreted as resulting from the the thrusting of kilometer-scale crustal slivers. The eclogite-facies shear zones, which enable the mechanical decoupling between the light crustal slivers and the dense underlying mantle, play therefore a crucial role in the initiation of exhumation. The relevance of such a conceptual model is assessed through the unidimensional channel-flow model. Within this model, all material properties are integrated into a single adimensional parameter, the exhumation number, which describes the competition between reactions-related density increase (impeding exhumation) and viscosity decrease (promoting exhumation). The evolution of the exhumation number through the partially eclogitized domain controls the circulation over the entire channel, and the burial of high-exhumation-number crust leads to the formation of a backward flow starting in the partially eclogitized zone. We show that exhumation rates of the order of the plate convergence velocities are only reached in the transitional regime when the nature of the buried crust drastically change., La Nappe de Lindås, au sein de l'Arc de Bergen, Norvège, est un massif anorthositique enfoui et partiellement éclogitisé en profondeur au cours de l'orogénèse calédonienne, qui fut relativement protégé de la rétromorphose pendant son retour vers la surface. La propagation à petite échelle des domaines éclogitisés ne procède donc pas simplement par diffusion du fluide, mais par un processus complexe couplant diffusion, réactions métamorphiques et fracturation des minéraux granulitiques. La caractérisation de la cinématique de la déformation dans le faciès éclogitique de l'île d'Holsnøy, au sein de la Nappe de Lindås montre sa grande cohérence à l'échelle de la zone d'étude (5*5 km), reflétant l'action de forces aux limites, plutôt que de contraintes locales liées aux réactions métamorphiques. Le cisaillement en moyenne vers l'Est, géométriquement restauré dans le contexte de la subduction calédonienne, est interprété comme reflétant le découplage d'unités crustales du panneau plongeant, qui commencent ainsi leur retour vers la surface. Alors que l'augmentation de densité réduit sa flottabilité, son adoucissement mécanique lui permet de se découpler du manteau lithosphérique qui la tire vers la profondeur. La compétition entre ces deux phénomènes, variable suivant la progression des transformations métamorphiques, est intégrée dans un unique paramètre adimensionnel, le nombre d'exhumation, dont la valeur décrit la capacité de la croûte à être exhumée. La subduction d'une croûte à fort nombre d'exhumation entraîne la création dans le canal de subduction d'un flux retour à partir du domaine partiellement éclogitisé. L'analyse des conditions de ce flux retour montre entre autres que les vitesses d'exhumation de l'ordre des vitesses de convergence des plaques lithosphériques ne sont possibles que pendant le régime transitoire entre l'enfouissement de croûte à faible et fort nombre d'exhumation. Ce travail, qui montre l'importance des réactions d'éclogitisation pour l'exhumation et plus généralement pour la dynamique des zones de collision, souligne en conséquence la nécessité de décrire avec précision les mécanismes micro- et macroscopiques qui permettent la progression et la propagation de l'éclogitisation.

International audience; The Urucum Suite granitoids (Rio Doce region southeastern Brazil) contains four main facies: megafeldspar granites, deformed medium-to-coarse-grained granites, tourmaline, and pegmatitic facies. they intrude both the staurolite-garnet-muscovite-biotite schist of the Sao Tome formation (Rio Doce Group) and the Galileia metaluminous suite (596±4 Ma). Detailed structural studies suggest that the Urucum Suite emplaced during an important dextral strike-slip movement (D1 phase) of the Brasiliano orogeny (650-450 Ma). Modal and chemical mineralogical variations suggest an evolution from the megafeldspar facies to the pegmatitic facies. Whole-rock geochemistry indicates the peraluminous character of the Urucum suite granitoids, the evolution from the megafeldspar facies granites to pegmatite facies granites to pegmatitic facies granites and suggests the syn-collisional character of this suite. U-Pb zircon (582± 2 Ma) and monazite (576-573 ±4 Ma) data indicate that the Urucum Suite emplaced during the Brasiliano orogeny. The peraluminous nature of the Suite and isotopic rich character in the Rb-Sr (87 Sr/86 Sr = 0.7114 to 0.7165) and Sm Nd (eNd(T) = -7.4 and -8.2) systems indicate that it formed by partial melting of older intermediate to felsic crustal sources. Based on early Proterozoic model-ages (2.3 to 1.8 Ga) and on 2.0 ga U-Pb inherited signature, granitoids of the Suite are probably derived from a rocks with a long crustal residence (Transamazonian basement), without extensive mantle contribution

From optical wave guide experiment in rare-earth and bismuth-substituted iron garnet films, it is shown that the the optical birefringence Δn presents important contributions Δnσ and Δn G arising from stress-induced (photoelastic) and growth-induced birefringences which depend on the chemical composition, growth temperature T G and orientation of the film. The dependence of Δnσ on T G is directly associated with the variation of the segregation coefficients of the different ions substituted in the garnet which changes their content and therefore the lattice mismatch between the films and the substrates. On the other hand Δn G seems to be independent on T G . In (110)-oriented Bi-YIG films anisotropic behaviours have been observed for Δnσ. Les applications potentielles des matériaux magnéto-optiques sont nombreuses. On se limitera dans cet exposé à celles qui ont atteint un degré d'avancement technologique suffisant. Il s'agit pour l'essentiel des mémoires thermomagnétiques et des composants opto-électroniques tels que les modulateurs, déflecteurs, composants non réciproques. On passera tout d'abord en revue les propriétés cristallographiques magnétiques et optiques des matériaux qu'on pense utilisables pour ces applications. On dégagera des critères de choix et on discutera les problèmes qui se posent au niveau de l'élaboration du matériau et au niveau de son utilisation dans un dispositif. Parmi tous les matériaux en cours d'étude, les grenats ferrimagnétiques se distinguent par leurs propriétés exceptionnelles. Des travaux récents ont montré qu'il est possible d'accroître sensiblement leurs chances d'utilisation par le choix de compositions au bismuth et au praséodyme qui augmentent considérablement les facteurs de mérite.

En nous appuyant sur des études menées au L. E. T. I. depuis plusieurs années, nous exposons les problèmes inhérents à l'obtention de matériaux pour dispositifs de mémorisation utilisant le déplacement de domaines magnétiques. Après un bref rappel du principe de fonctionnement de ces dispositifs et des performances à atteindre pour les rendre économiquement intéressants, nous décrivons les propriétés magnétiques statiques et dynamiques que doivent présenter les matériaux pour être utilisables. Facteur de qualité, longueur caractéristique, diamètre minimum et vitesse de déplacement des domaines, sont explicités en fonction des grandeurs magnétiques fondamentales. Nous passons ensuite en revue les différents matériaux étudiés jusqu'ici et leur méthode de préparation. Les orthoferrites de terres rares, simples ou substitués, élaborés par différentes méthodes ont été les premiers monocristaux envisagés ; ils ont été délaissés devant les difficultés rencontrées pour y abaisser au-dessous de quelques dizaines de microns le diamètre des domaines magnétiques. Des conclusions similaires ont été tirées d'études réalisées sur d'autres matériaux non cubiques. La fabrication, par épitaxie, de films d'oxydes mixtes à structure grenat dans lesquels une anisotropie uniaxiale est induite pendant la croissance, soit par l'établissement d'un gradient de concentration, soit par des contraintes magnétostrictives, permet de disposer de matériaux qui satisfont toutes les propriétés requises. Nous décrivons les trois méthodes de croissance épitaxique utilisées — solvants, transport en phase vapeur, synthèse hydrothermale — et en discutons les avantages et les difficultés à partir de résultats récents. Bien que les couches monocristallines obtenues actuellement soient pratiquement exemptes de défauts et aient atteint une qualité propre à l'industrialisation, ces matériaux restent d'élaboration délicate et coûteuse. Ces remarques justifient les recherches entreprises récemment pour remplacer les matériaux cristallisés étudiés jusqu'ici par des couches minces d'alliages ferrimagnétiques amorphes.
