Abstract: International audience; Cyanobacteria have massively contributed to carbonate deposition over the geological 27 history. They are traditionally thought to biomineralize CaCO 3 extracellularly as an 28 indirect byproduct of photosynthesis. However, the recent discovery of freshwater 29 cyanobacteria forming intracellular amorphous calcium carbonates (iACC) challenges 30 this view. Despite the geochemical interest of such a biomineralization process, its 31 molecular mechanisms and evolutionary history remain elusive. Here, using comparative 32 genomics, we identify a new gene (ccyA) and protein family (calcyanin) possibly associated 33 with cyanobacterial iACC biomineralization. Proteins of the calcyanin family are 34 composed of a conserved C-terminal domain, which likely adopts an original fold, and a 35 variable N-terminal domain whose structure allows differentiating 4 major types among 36 the 35 known calcyanin homologs. Calcyanin lacks detectable full-length homologs with 37 known function. The overexpression of ccyA in iACC-lacking cyanobacteria resulted in 38 an increased intracellular Ca content. Moreover, ccyA presence was correlated and/or co-39 localized with genes involved in Ca or HCO 3transport and homeostasis, supporting the 40 hypothesis of a functional role of calcyanin in iACC biomineralization. Whatever its 41 function, ccyA appears as diagnostic of intracellular calcification in cyanobacteria. By 42 searching for ccyA in publicly available genomes, we identified 13 additional 43 cyanobacterial strains forming iACC, as confirmed by microscopy. This extends our 44 knowledge about the phylogenetic and environmental distribution of cyanobacterial 45 iACC biomineralization, especially with the detection of multicellular genera as well as a 46 marine species. Moreover, ccyA was probably present in ancient cyanobacteria, with 47 independent losses in various lineages that resulted in a broad but patchy distribution 48 across modern cyanobacteria.

Abstract: International audience; Although biomineralization of CaCO3 is widespread in Bacteria and Archaea, the molecular mechanisms involved in this process remain less known than those used by Eukaryotes. A better understanding of these mechanisms is crucial for a broad diversity of studies including those (i) aiming at assessing the role of bacteria in the geochemical cycles of Ca and C, (ii) investigating the process of fossilization, and (iii) engineering applications using bacterially mediated CaCO3 mineralization. Different types of bacterially-mediated mineralization modes have been distinguished depending on whether they are influenced (by extracellular organic molecules), induced (by metabolic activity) or controlled (by specific genes). In the first two types, mineralization is usually extracellular, while it is intracellular for the two ascertained cases of controlled bacterial mineralization. In this review, we list a large number of cases illustrating the three different modes of bacterially-mediated CaCO3 mineralization. Overall, this shows the broad diversity of metabolic pathways, organic molecules and thereby microorganisms that can biomineralize CaCO3. Providing an improved understanding of the mechanisms involved and a good knowledge of the molecular drivers of carbonatogenesis, the increasing number of (meta)-omics studies may help in the future to estimate the significance of bacterially mediated CaCO3 mineralization.

Abstract: The biomineralization of calcium carbonates is a common process in bacteria, however, the underlying molecular mechanisms remain poorly understood. Recently, intracellular biomineralization of amorphous calcium carbonate phases (iACC) has been discovered in environmentally and phylogenetically widespread cyanobacteria. An orphan gene of unknown function, named ccyA and coding for a protein named Calcyanin, has been identified only in these cyanobacteria. My thesis work consisted in developing a genetic approach to analyze the in vivo function of the ccyA gene and determine whether or not the encoded protein is involved in the formation of iACCs. The failure of ccyA deletion attempts in Cyanothece sp. PCC 7425 and Synechococcus sp. PCC 6312 suggests that this gene could be essential to cells viability. We have therefore introduced a plasmid allowing heterologous expression of ccyA in model cyanobacteria that do not naturally form iACC. The constitutive expression of various ccyA sequences in Synechococcus elongatus PCC 7942 is slowed down compared to that of the wild strain. In agreement, ccyA-expressing mutants have more dead cells than the wild-type strain. Finally, these mutants have more intracellular calcium than the wild strain, suggesting a modification of calcium homeostasis. Finally, I introduced plasmids by conjugation in Cyanothece sp. PCC 7425 and Synechococcus sp. PCC 6312 allowing them to overproduce ccyA. Calcyanin fused with eGFP is localized to the membrane and poles of cells in Synechococcus sp. PCC 6312.; La biominéralisation des carbonates de calcium est un processus répandu chez les bactéries. Cependant les mécanismes moléculaires sous-jacents restent mal compris. Récemment, la biominéralisation intracellulaire de phases amorphes de carbonate de calcium (iACC) a été découverte chez des cyanobactéries répandues environnementalement et phylogénétiquement. Un gène orphelin de fonction inconnue, nommé ccyA et codant pour une protéine nommée Calcyanine, a été identifié uniquement chez ces cyanobactéries. Ainsi mon travail de thèse a consisté à développer une approche génétique pour analyser la fonction in vivo du gène ccyA et déterminer si la protéine qu’il code est impliquée ou non dans la formation des iACC. L’échec des tentatives de délétion de ccyA chez Cyanothece sp. PCC 7425 et Synechococcus sp. PCC 6312 suggère que ce gène leur est essentiel. Nous avons donc construit une expression hétérologue de ccyA dans des cyanobactéries modèles ne formant pas naturellement des iACC. L’expression constitutive de diverses séquences du gène ccyA a montré que la croissance de Synechococcus elongatus PCC 7942 est ralentie par rapport à celle de la souche sauvage. En accord, les mutants exprimant le ccyA présentent plus de cellules mortes que la souche sauvage. Enfin, ces mutants possèdent plus de calcium intracellulaire que la souche sauvage, suggérant une modification de l’homéostasie du calcium. Enfin, j’ai introduit des plasmides par conjugaison chez Cyanothece sp. PCC 7425 et Synechococcus sp. PCC 6312 leur permettant de surproduire ccyA. La Calcyanine fusionnée avec la eGFP se localise à la membrane et aux pôles des cellules chez la souche Synechococcus sp. PCC 6312.

Abstract: Reliable neutron-induced reaction cross sections of unstable nuclei are essential for nuclear astrophysics and applications but their direct measurement is often impossible. The surrogate-reaction method is one of the most promising alternatives to access these cross sections. However, its use is hampered by the need to account for the differences between the angular momenta and parities populated by the surrogate and the neutron-induced reactions. Here we show that it is possible to overcome this limitation and infer for the first time both the neutron-induced fission and radiative-capture cross sections of 239Pu. This was achieved by combining simultaneously-measured fission and gamma-emission probabilities for the 240Pu(4He,4He') surrogate reaction with a calculation of the angular-momentum and parity distributions populated in this reaction.

Abstract: International audience; Background: Detailed spectroscopy of neutron-rich odd-A Cu isotopes is of great importance for studying the shell evolution in the region of Ni78. While there is experimental information on excited states in Cu69−73,77,79 isotopes, the information concerning Cu75 is very limited. Purpose: Experimentally observed single-particle, core-coupling, and proton-hole intruder states in Cu75, will complete the systematics of these states in the chain of isotopes. Method: Excited states in Cu75 were populated in the β decay of Ni75 isotopes. The Ni nuclei were produced by the in-flight fission of U238 projectiles, and were separated, identified, and implanted in a highly segmented Si detector array for the detection of the β-decay electrons. The β-delayed γ rays were detected in a HPGe cluster array. Monte Carlo shell model calculations were performed using the A3DA interaction built on the pfg9/2d5/2 model space for both neutrons and protons. Results: A level scheme of Cu75 was built up to ≈4 MeV by performing a γ-γ coincidence analysis. The excited states below 2 MeV were interpreted based on the systematics of neutron-rich odd-A Cu isotopes and the results of the shell model calculations. Conclusions: The evolution of the single-particle, core-coupling, and proton-hole intruder states in the chain of neutron-rich odd-A Cu isotopes is discussed in the present work, in connection with the newly observed level structure of Cu75.

Abstract: International audience; Cyanobacteria, the largest phylum of prokaryotes, perform oxygenic photosynthesis and are regarded as the ancestors of the plant chloroplast and the purveyors of the oxygen and biomass that shaped the biosphere. Nowadays, cyanobacteria are attracting a growing interest in being able to use solar energy, H2O, CO2 and minerals to produce biotechnologically interesting chemicals. This often requires the introduction and expression of heterologous genes encoding the enzymes that are not present in natural cyanobacteria. However, only a handful of model strains with a well-established genetic system are being studied so far, leaving the vast biodiversity of cyanobacteria poorly understood and exploited. In this study, we focused on the robust unicellular cyanobacterium Cyanothece PCC 7425 that has many interesting attributes, such as large cell size; capacity to fix atmospheric nitrogen (under anaerobiosis) and to grow not only on nitrate but also on urea (a frequent pollutant) as the sole nitrogen source; capacity to form CO2-sequestrating intracellular calcium carbonate granules and to produce various biotechnologically interesting products. We demonstrate for the first time that RSF1010-derived plasmid vectors can be used for promoter analysis, as well as constitutive or temperature-controlled overproduction of proteins and analysis of their sub-cellular localization in Cyanothece PCC 7425. These findings are important because no gene manipulation system had been developed for Cyanothece PCC 7425, yet, handicapping its potential to serve as a model host. Furthermore, using this toolbox, we engineered Cyanothece PCC 7425 to produce the high-value terpene, limonene which has applications in biofuels, bioplastics, cosmetics, food and pharmaceutical industries. This is the first report of the engineering of a Cyanothece strain for the production of a chemical and the first demonstration that terpene can be produced by an engineered cyanobacterium growing on urea as the sole nitrogen source.

Abstract: International audience; The high-spin structures of Ba136 and Ba137 are investigated after multinucleon-transfer (MNT) and fusion-evaporation reactions. Ba136 is populated in a Xe136+U238 MNT reaction employing the high-resolution Advanced GAmma Tracking Array (AGATA) coupled to the magnetic spectrometer PRISMA at the Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro, Italy, and in two Be9+Te130 fusion-evaporation reactions using the High-efficiency Observatory for γ-Ray Unique Spectroscopy (HORUS) at the FN tandem accelerator of the University of Cologne, Germany. Furthermore, both isotopes are populated in an elusive reaction channel in the B11+Te130 fusion-evaporation reaction utilizing the HORUS γ-ray array. The level scheme above the Jπ=10+ isomer in Ba136 is revised and extended up to an excitation energy of approximately 5.5 MeV. From the results of angular-correlation measurements, the Ex=3707- and Ex=4920-keV states are identified as the bandheads of positive- and negative-parity cascades. While the high-spin regimes of both Te132 and Xe134 are characterized by high-energy 12+→10+ transitions, the Ba136E2 ground-state band is interrupted by negative-parity states only a few hundred keV above the Jπ=10+ isomer. Abstract: International audience; The Oslo method has been applied to particle-γ coincidences following the Pu239(d,p) reaction to obtain the nuclear level density (NLD) and γ-ray strength function (γSF) of Pu240. The experiment was conducted with a 12 MeV deuteron beam at the Oslo Cyclotron Laboratory. The low spin transfer of this reaction leads to a spin-parity mismatch between populated and intrinsic levels. This is a challenge for the Oslo method as it can have a significant impact on the extracted NLD and γSF. We have developed an iterative approach to ensure consistent results even for cases with a large spin-parity mismatch, in which we couple Green's function transfer calculations of the spin-parity dependent population cross-section to the nuclear decay code rainier. The resulting γSF shows a pronounced enhancement between 2–4 MeV that is consistent with the location of the low-energy orbital M1 scissors mode.

Abstract: International audience; The transitional nuclei $^{134}$Ba and $^{133}$Ba are investigated after multinucleon transfer employing the high-resolution Advanced GAmma Tracking Array coupled to the magnetic spectrometer PRISMA at the Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro, Italy, and after fusion-evaporation reaction at the FN tandem accelerator of the University of Cologne, Germany. The Jπ=19/2+ state at 1942 keV in $^{133}$Ba is identified as an isomer with a half-life of 66.6(20)ns corresponding to a B(E1) value of 7.7(4)×10−6e2fm2 for the Jπ=19/2+ to Jπ=19/2− transition. The level scheme of $^{134}$Ba above the Jπ=10+ isomer is extended to approximately 6 MeV. A pronounced backbending is observed at ℏω=0.38 MeV along the positive-parity yrast band. The results are compared to the high-spin systematics of the Z=56 isotopes. Large-scale shell-model calculations employing the GCN50:82, SN100PN, SNV, PQM130, Realistic SM, and EPQQM interactions reproduce the experimental findings and elucidate the structure of the high-spin states. The shell-model calculations employing the GCN50:82 and PQM130 interactions reproduce alignment properties and provide detailed insight into the microscopic origin of this phenomenon in transitional $^{134}$Ba.

Abstract: Particle-$\gamma$ coincidence experiments were performed at the Oslo Cyclotron Laboratory with the $^{181}$Ta(d,X) and $^{181}$Ta($^{3}$He,X) reactions, to measure the nuclear level densities (NLDs) and $\gamma$-ray strength functions ($\gamma$SFs) of $^{180, 181, 182}$Ta using the Oslo method. The Back-shifted Fermi-Gas, Constant Temperature plus Fermi Gas, and Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov plus Combinatorial models where used for the absolute normalisations of the experimental NLDs at the neutron separation energies. The NLDs and $\gamma$SFs are used to calculate the corresponding $^{181}$Ta(n,$\gamma$) cross sections and these are compared to results from other techniques. The energy region of the scissors resonance strength is investigated and from the data and comparison to prior work it is concluded that the scissors strength splits into two distinct parts. This splitting may allow for the determination of triaxiality and a $\gamma$ deformation of $14.9^{\circ} \pm 1.8^{\circ}$ was determined for $^{181}$Ta.

Abstract: With a focus on the dispersed corpus of an American photographic society – the California Camera Club – this article proposes new methods to examine photographic objects produced around 1900. In a period commonly defined by Pictorialism and the New York Photo-Secession, the works of San Franciscan photographers stand out as extremely versatile. The Club corpus, which has withstood the earthquake and fire of 1906, and decade-long oblivion on the part of scholars and curators, is dispersed over numerous Californian institutions. As such, it represents an important contribution to American photographic history that demands us to rethink the categories generally ascribed to camera clubs. To grasp how the works of the more than 400-member-strong organization can be partly reassembled, this article proposes a survey of the Club's primary sources with a special focus on their material supports and their storage locations, accompanied by a historiographical discussion. By looking first at the productions of the members in their most active period, and, as a second step, examining the processes of canonization which led to their oblivion, this article provides new tools for photo-historical research around 1900. En se concentrant sur le corpus dispersé d'une société photographique américaine, le California Camera Club, cet article propose de nouvelles méthodes pour examiner des objets photographiques produits autour de 1900. Dans une période dominée par le Pictorialisme et la Photo-Secession de New York, les travaux des photographes de San Francisco se démarquent par leur polyvalence. Le corpus du club a résisté non seulement au tremblement de terre et l'incendie de 1906 mais a également survécu à l'oubli de la part des chercheurs et des conservateurs. Il se trouve aujourd'hui dans de nombreuses institutions californiennes. Il représente une contribution importante à l'histoire de la photographie américaine et nous demande de repenser les caractéristiques généralement attribuées aux caméra clubs. Pour comprendre comment les travaux de cette organisation de plus de 400 membres peuvent être reconstitués partiellement, cet article propose une étude détaillée des sources primaires qui met l'accent sur leurs supports matériels, leurs lieux de conservation et le contexte historiographique. En analysant d'abord les productions des membres durant la période la plus florissante et en retraçant ensuite les processus de canonisation qui ont mené à leur oubli, cet article fournit de nouveaux outils pour la recherche en histoire de la photographie autour de 1900.

Abstract: International audience; A Coulomb excitation campaign on $^{106,108,110}$Sn at 4.4–4.5 MeV/u was launched at the HIE-ISOLDE facility at CERN. Larger excitation cross sections and γ-ray statistics were achieved compared to previous experiments at ∼2.8 MeV/u. More precise $(B(E2;0_{1}^{ + } \to 2_{1}^{ + }))$ values, lifetimes of states via the Doppler shift attenuation method, and new $(B(E2;0_{1}^{ + } \to 2_{x}^{ + })), (B(E2;2_{1}^{ + } \to 4_{1}^{ + }))$ and $(Q(2_{1}^{ + }))$ values from the new Miniball data will be obtained and applied to test modern nuclear structure theories.

Abstract: The California Camera Club, a collective of amateur and professional photographers, most active in San Francisco between 1890 and 1915, represents a constantly marginalized organization in the history of photography and of the American West. By adopting a two-fold cultural-historical and material approach, this thesis sheds light on a largely unknown variety of Club activities and productions that served as meaningful elements to forge the identity of a remote Western community. Through its inclusive outlook, unifying more than 400 members in 1900, the Club must be considered a locally embedded organization that mobilized photography to produce an aesthetically pleasing and historically coherent narrative of the city and the state. Despite its chronological position in the period of Pictorialism and the striving for institutional recognition, the Club corpus cannot be inserted into an art-historical canon of photography. Rather, by drawing on diverse strategies of dissemination and exhibition, the members adopted a collective approach to the medium that turned the striving for institutional recognition into a desire for regional legitimation. Through an examination of photographic practices, uses, and object trajectories, this thesis traces the construction of an idiosyncratic representation of Californian culture and history by the Club, which actively assisted the state’s search for a legitimate national place. By focusing on the collective dimension of photography, the analysis demonstrates how the practice in an isolated territory led to the imagination of a community with shared aesthetic and historical understandings. The object of this thesis is to revise both linear and narrow tropes in the history of photography by broadening its geographic, sociocultural, archival perspectives; Le California Camera Club, un collectif de photographes amateurs et professionnels actif à San Francisco notamment entre 1890 et 1915, est une organisation constamment marginalisée dans l’histoire de la photographie et de l’Ouest américain. En adoptant une double approche d’histoire culturelle et matérielle, cette thèse éclaire une gamme d’activités et de productions de ce club largement inconnu, qui ont contribué à forger l’identité d’une communauté éloignée de l’Ouest. Par son approche inclusive, réunissant plus de 400 membres en 1900, le club doit être considéré comme une organisation localement ancrée, qui se sert de la photographie pour produire un récit esthétiquement attirant et historiquement cohérent de la ville et de l’État. Malgré son chevauchement chronologique avec le pictorialisme et son ambition de faire reconnaître le médium parmi les beaux-arts, le corpus du club ne peut être inséré dans un canon d’histoire de l’art de la photographie. En se basant sur diverses stratégies de diffusion et d’exposition, les membres adoptent plutôt une approche collective qui transforme l’aspiration à la reconnaissance en un désir de légitimation régionale. Abstract: International audience; Lifetimes of several short-lived excited states in Nd138 were measured with the ROSPHERE array at IFIN-HH, Bucharest, using the recoil-distance Doppler shift technique following the Sb123(F19,4n) reaction. The resulting electromagnetic transition probabilities are compared to large-scale shell model calculations and to constrained Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov calculations with the Gogny D1S interaction, configuration mixing, and a five-dimensional collective Hamiltonian formalism. The onset of collectivity in Nd isotopes below the N=82 shell closure and the deformation induced by the alignment of protons and neutron holes in the h11/2 orbitals are discussed.

Abstract: International audience; Transition probabilities of intermediate-spin yrast and non-yrast excitations in Se80,82 were investigated in a recoil distance Doppler-shift (RDDS) experiment performed at the Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare, Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro. The Cologne Plunger device for deep inelastic scattering was used for the RDDS technique and was combined with the AGATA Demonstrator array for the γ-ray detection and coupled to the PRISMA magnetic spectrometer for an event-by-event particle identification. In Se80, the level lifetimes of the yrast (61+) and (81+) states and of a non-yrast band feeding the yrast 41+ state are determined. A spin and parity assignment of the head of this sideband is discussed based on the experimental results and supported by large-scale shell-model calculations. In Se82, the level lifetimes of the yrast 61+ state and the yrare 42+ state and lifetime limits of the yrast (101+) state and of the 51− state are determined. Although the experimental results contain large uncertainties, they are interpreted with care in terms of large-scale shell-model calculations using the effective interactions JUN45 and jj44b. The excited states' wave functions are investigated and discussed with respect to the role of the neutron g9/2 orbital.

Abstract: International audience; The transitional nucleus Xe131 is investigated after multinucleon transfer in the Xe136+Pb208 and Xe136+U238 reactions employing the high-resolution Advanced γ-Tracking Array (AGATA) coupled to the magnetic spectrometer PRISMA at the Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro, Italy, and as an elusive reaction product in the fusion-evaporation reaction Sn124(B11,p3n)Xe131 employing the High-efficiency Observatory for γ-Ray Unique Spectroscopy (HORUS) γ-ray array coupled to a double-sided silicon strip detector at the University of Cologne, Germany. The level scheme of Xe131 is extended to 5 MeV. A pronounced backbending is observed at ℏω≈0.4MeV along the negative-parity one-quasiparticle νh11/2(α=−1/2) band. The results are compared to the high-spin systematics of the Z=54 isotopes and the N=77 isotones. Large-scale shell-model calculations employing the PQM130, SN100PN, GCN50:82, SN100-KTH, and a realistic effective interaction reproduce the experimental findings and provide guidance to elucidate the structure of the high-spin states. Further calculations in Xe129−132 provide insight into the changing nuclear structure along the Xe chain towards the N=82 shell closure. Proton occupancy in the π0h11/2 orbital is found to be decisive for the description of the observed backbending phenomenon.

Abstract: The lifetimes of the first excited 2^{+}, 4^{+}, and 6^{+} states in ^{98}Zr were measured with the recoil-distance Doppler shift method in an experiment performed at GANIL. Excited states in ^{98}Zr were populated using the fission reaction between a 6.2 MeV/u ^{238}U beam and a ^{9}Be target. The γ rays were detected with the EXOGAM array in correlation with the fission fragments identified by mass and atomic number in the VAMOS++ spectrometer. Our result shows a very small B(E2;2_{1}^{+}→0_{1}^{+}) value in ^{98}Zr, thereby confirming the very sudden onset of collectivity at N=60. The experimental results are compared to large-scale Monte Carlo shell model and beyond-mean-field calculations. The present results indicate the coexistence of two additional deformed shapes in this nucleus along with the spherical ground state.

Abstract: Photoneutron cross sections were measured for $^{58}$Ni, $^{60}$Ni, $^{61}$Ni, and $^{64}$Ni at energies between the one-neutron and two-neutron thresholds using quasi-monochromatic $\gamma$-ray beams produced in laser Compton-scattering at the NewSUBARU synchrotron radiation facility. The new photoneutron data are used to extract the $\gamma$-ray strength function above the neutron threshold complementing the information obtained by the Oslo method below the threshold. We discuss radiative neutron capture cross sections and the Maxwellian-averaged cross sections for Ni isotopes including $^{63}$Ni, a branching point nucleus along the weak s-process path. The cross sections are calculated with the experimentally constrained $\gamma$-ray strength functions from the Hartree-Fock-Bogolyubov plus quasi-particle-random phase approximation based on the Gogny D1M interaction for both $E1$ and $M1$ components and supplemented with the $M1$ upbend., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures, re-submitted to PRC

Abstract: Lifetimes of excited states in 107Tc, 109Rh, 111Rh, and 113Rh were measured at GANIL using the Recoil-Distance Doppler Shift method. The neutron-rich nuclei were produced in fission reactions in inverse kinematics with a 238U beam impinging on a 9Be target. Fission fragments were identified event-by-event in the ray-tracing spectrometer VAMOS++ and correlated with prompt $\gamma$ rays observed around the target position with the EXOGAM Ge detector array. Several lifetimes were obtained for states in the positive-parity yrast bands in the four nuclei and compared to triaxial particle-rotor calculations. The results clarify the configuration for the strongest positive-parity band in 107Tc and suggest a gradual increase of triaxial deformation with atomic number Z, reaching almost maximum triaxiality for the neutron-rich Rh nuclei.

Abstract: International audience; Detailed information on isomeric states in A≈135 nuclei is exploited to benchmark shell-model calculations in the region northwest of doubly magic nucleus Sn132. The N=79 isotones Xe133 and Ba135 are studied after multinucleon transfer in the Xe136+Pb208 reaction employing the high-resolution Advanced GAmma Tracking Array (AGATA) coupled to the magnetic spectrometer PRISMA at the Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro, Italy and in a pulsed-beam experiment at the FN tandem accelerator of the University of Cologne, Germany utilizing a Be9+Te130 fusion-evaporation reaction at a beam energy of 40 MeV. Isomeric states are identified via delayed γ-ray spectroscopy. Hitherto tentative excitation energy, spin, and parity assignments of the 2107-keV Jπ=23/2+ isomer in Xe133 are confirmed and a half-life of T1/2=8.64(13) ms is measured. The 2388-keV state in Ba135 is identified as a Jπ=23/2+ isomer with a half-life of 1.06(4) ms. The new results show a smooth onset of isomeric Jπ=23/2+ states along the N=79 isotones and close a gap in the high-spin systematics towards the recently investigated Jπ=23/2+ isomer in Nd139. The resulting systematics of M2 reduced transition probabilities is discussed within the framework of the nuclear shell model. Latest large-scale shell-model calculations employing the SN100PN, GCN50:82, SN100-KTH, and a realistic effective interaction reproduce the experimental findings generally well and give insight into the structure of the isomers.

Abstract: International audience; The structure of neutron-rich 96,98Sr isotopes was investigated by lowenergyCoulomb excitation of radioactive beams at the REX-ISOLDE facility.Reduced transition probabilities and spectroscopic quadrupole moments wereextracted from the differential Coulomb excitation cross sections. These results allowfor the first time to draw definite conclusions about the shape coexistence of highlydeformed prolate and spherical configurations. In particular, a very small mixingbetween the coexisting states is observed, contrary to other mass regions wherestrong mixing is the rule. The experimental data suggest a significant contribution ofthe triaxial degree of freedom in the ground state of both isotopes. In addition,experimental information on low-lying states in 98Rb has been obtained.

Abstract: Expérience GANIL/AGATA/VAMOS++; International audience; Lifetimes of the 41+ states in 62,64Fe and the 11/21− states in 61,63Co and 59Mn were measured at the Grand Accélérateur National d'Ions Lourds (GANIL) facility by using the Advanced Gamma Tracking Array (AGATA) and the large-acceptance variable mode spectrometer (VAMOS++). The states were populated through multinucleon transfer reactions with a U238 beam impinging on a Ni64 target, and lifetimes in the picosecond range were measured by using the recoil distance Doppler shift method. The data show an increase of collectivity in the iron isotopes approaching N=40. The reduction of the subshell gap between the ν2p1/2 and ν1g9/2 orbitals leads to an increased population of the quasi-SU(3) pair (ν1g9/2,ν2d5/2), which causes an increase in quadrupole collectivity. Abstract: International audience; The high-spin structures and isomers of the N=81 isotones Xe135 and Ba137 are investigated after multinucleon-transfer (MNT) and fusion-evaporation reactions. Both nuclei are populated (i) in Xe136+U238 and (ii) Xe136+Pb208 MNT reactions employing the high-resolution Advanced Gamma Tracking Array (AGATA) coupled to the magnetic spectrometer PRISMA, (iii) in the Xe136+Pt198 MNT reaction employing the γ-ray array GAMMASPHERE in combination with the gas-detector array CHICO, and (iv) via a B11+Te130 fusion-evaporation reaction with the HORUS γ-ray array at the University of Cologne. The high-spin level schemesof Xe135 and Ba137 are considerably extended to higher energies. The 2058-keV (19/2−) state in Xe135 is identified as an isomer, closing a gap in the systematics along the N=81 isotones. Its half-life is measured to be 9.0(9) ns, corresponding to a reduced transition probability of B(E2,19/2−→15/2−)=0.52(6) W.u. The experimentally deduced reduced transition probabilities of the isomeric states are compared to shell-model predictions. Latest shell-model calculations reproduce the experimental findings generally well and provide guidance to the interpretation of the new levels.

Abstract: International audience; The transitional nuclei Xe132 and Xe133 are investigated after multinucleon-transfer (MNT) and fusion-evaporation reactions. Both nuclei are populated (i) in Xe136+Pb208 MNT reactions employing the high-resolution Advanced GAmma Tracking Array (AGATA) coupled to the magnetic spectrometer PRISMA, (ii) in the Xe136+Pt198 MNT reaction employing the GAMMASPHERE spectrometer in combination with the gas-detector array CHICO, and (iii) as an evaporation residue after a Te130(α,xn)Xe134−xn fusion-evaporation reaction employing the HORUS γ-ray array at the University of Cologne. The high-spin level schemes are considerably extended above the Jπ=(7−) and (10+) isomers in Xe132 and above the 11/2− isomer in Xe133. The results are compared to the high-spin systematics of the Z=54 as well as the N=78 and N=79 chains. Furthermore, evidence is found for a long-lived (T1/2≫1μs) isomer in Xe133 which closes a gap along the N=79 isotones. Shell-model calculations employing the SN100PN and PQM130 effective interactions reproduce the experimental findings and provide guidance to the interpretation of the observed high-spin features.

Abstract: Prompt fission $\gamma$-rays are responsible for approximately 5\% of the total energy released in fission, and therefore important to understand when modelling nuclear reactors. In this work we present prompt $\gamma$-ray emission characteristics in fission, for the first time as a function of the nuclear excitation energy of the fissioning system. Emitted $\gamma$-ray spectra were measured, and $\gamma$-ray multiplicities and average and total $\gamma$ energies per fission were determined for the $^{233}$U(d,pf) reaction for excitation energies between 4.8 and 10 MeV, and for the $^{239}$Pu(d,pf) reaction between 4.5 and 9 MeV. The spectral characteristics show no significant change as a function of excitation energy above the fission barrier, despite the fact that an extra $\sim$5 MeV of energy is potentially available in the excited fragments for $\gamma$-decay. The measured results are compared to model calculations made for prompt $\gamma$-ray emission with the fission model code GEF. Further comparison with previously obtained results from thermal neutron induced fission is made to characterize possible differences arising from using the surrogate (d,p) reaction.

Abstract: The level structure of the neutron-rich ^{77}Cu nucleus is investigated through β-delayed γ-ray spectroscopy at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory of the RIKEN Nishina Center. Ions of ^{77}Ni are produced by in-flight fission, separated and identified in the BigRIPS fragment separator, and implanted in the WAS3ABi silicon detector array, surrounded by Ge cluster detectors of the EURICA array. A large number of excited states in ^{77}Cu are identified for the first time by correlating γ rays with the β decay of ^{77}Ni, and a level scheme is constructed by utilizing their coincidence relationships. The good agreement between large-scale Monte Carlo shell model calculations and experimental results allows for the evaluation of the single-particle structure near ^{78}Ni and suggests a single-particle nature for both the 5/2_{1}^{-} and 3/2_{1}^{-} states in ^{77}Cu, leading to doubly magic ^{78}Ni. ispartof: Physical Review Letters vol:118 issue:24 ispartof: location:United States status: published

Abstract: International audience; The structure of neutron-rich 96,98Sr nuclei was investigated by low-energy safe Coulomb excitation ofradioactive beams at the REX-ISOLDE facility, CERN, with the MINIBALL spectrometer. A rich set oftransitional and diagonal E2 matrix elements, including those for non-yrast structures, has been extractedfrom the differential Coulomb-excitation cross sections. The results support the scenario of a shape transition atN = 60, giving rise to the coexistence of a highly deformed prolate and a spherical configuration in 98Sr, andare compared to predictions from several theoretical calculations. The experimental data suggest a significantcontribution of the triaxal degree of freedom in the ground state of both isotopes. In addition, experimentalinformation on low-lying states in 98Rb has been obtained.

Abstract: International audience; We performed a γ -particle coincidence experiment for the 60Ni+116Sn system to investigate whether thepopulation of the two-neutron pickup channel leading to 62Ni is mainly concentrated in the ground-state transition,as has been found in a previous work [D. Montanari et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 113, 052501 (2014)]. The experimenthas been performed by employing the PRISMA magnetic spectrometer coupled to theAdvanced Gamma TrackingArray (AGATA) demonstrator. The strength distribution of excited states corresponding to the inelastic, one- andtwo-neutron transfer channels has been extracted.We found that in the two-neutron transfer channel the strengthto excited states corresponds to a fraction (less than 24%) of the total, consistent with the previously obtainedresults that the 2n channel is dominated by the ground-state to ground-state transition.

Abstract: Published by the American Physical Society under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 License.; International audience; Neutron-rich $^{96,98}$Sr isotopes have been investigated by safe Coulomb excitation of radioactive beams at the REX-ISOLDE facility. Reduced transition probabilities and spectroscopic quadrupole moments have been extracted from the differential Coulomb excitation cross sections. These results allow, for the first time, the drawing of definite conclusions about the shape coexistence of highly deformed prolate and spherical configurations. In particular, a very small mixing between the coexisting states is observed, contrary to other mass regions where strong mixing is present. Experimental results have been compared to beyond-mean-field calculations using the Gogny D1S interaction in a five-dimensional collective Hamiltonian formalism, which reproduce the shape change at N=60.

Abstract: A. Vogt et al. ; 12 págs.; 9 figs.; 1 tab., Detailed spectroscopic information on the N∼82 nuclei is necessary to benchmark shell-model calculations in the region. The nuclear structure above long-lived isomers in Xe134 is investigated after multinucleon transfer (MNT) and actinide fission. Xenon-134 was populated as (i) a transfer product in Xe136+U238 and Xe136+Pb208 MNT reactions and (ii) as a fission product in the Xe136+U238 reaction employing the high-resolution Advanced Gamma Tracking Array (AGATA). Trajectory reconstruction has been applied for the complete identification of beamlike transfer products with the magnetic spectrometer PRISMA. The Xe136+Pt198 MNT reaction was studied with the γ-ray spectrometer GAMMASPHERE in combination with the gas detector array Compact Heavy Ion Counter (CHICO). Several high-spin states in Xe134 on top of the two long-lived isomers are discovered based on γγ-coincidence relationships and information on the γ-ray angular distributions as well as excitation energies from the total kinetic energy loss and fission fragments. The revised level scheme of Xe134 is extended up to an excitation energy of 5.832 MeV with tentative spin-parity assignments up to 16+. Previous assignments of states above the 7- isomer are revised. Abstract: The level density and gamma-ray strength function (gammaSF) of 243Pu have been measured in the quasi-continuum using the Oslo method. Excited states in 243Pu were populated using the 242Pu(d,p) reaction. The level density closely follows the constant-temperature level density formula for excitation energies above the pairing gap. The gammaSF displays a double-humped resonance at low energy as also seen in previous investigations of actinide isotopes. The structure is interpreted as the scissors resonance and has a centroid of omega_{SR}=2.42(5)MeV and a total strength of B_{SR}=10.1(15)mu_N^2, which is in excellent agreement with sum-rule estimates. The measured level density and gammaSF were used to calculate the 242Pu(n,gamma) cross section in a neutron energy range for which there were previously no measured data., Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures

Abstract: We investigated the 238U(d,p) reaction as a surrogate for the n + 238U reaction. For this purpose we measured for the first time the gamma-decay and fission probabilities of 239U* simultaneously and compared them to the corresponding neutron-induced data. We present the details of the procedure to infer the decay probabilities, as well as a thorough uncertainty analysis, including parameter correlations. Calculations based on the continuum-discretized coupled-channels and distorted-wave Born approximations were used to correct our data from detected protons originating from elastic and inelastic deuteron breakup. In the region where the fission and gamma-decay probabilities compete, the corrected fission probability is in agreement with neutron-induced data, whereas the gamma-decay probability is much higher than the neutron-induced data. Abstract: International audience; For certain combinations of protons and neutrons in atomic nuclei, a rise of a reflection asymmetry is expected. Experimental E3 strengths, which as a function of the neutron number peak at around N approximate to 8 8 and N approximate to 1 3 4, indicate enhanced octupole correlations as predicted by theory. Low-energy Coulomb excitation is a highly successful method for establishing the evolution of nuclear shapes, through the measurement of cross sections, to populate excited states that can be directly related to the static and dynamic moments of the charge distribution of the nucleus. A Coulomb excitation experiment at the ALTO facility, Orsay was performed recently to study collective properties of Nd-146 and Sm-148. In particular, the strengths of the < 3(-)parallel to E3 parallel to 0(+)> and < 1(-)parallel to E3 parallel to 4(+)> matrix elements will provide a clear distinction between octupole vibration and rigid deformation.

Abstract: Expérience GANIL/VAMOS/EXOGAM; International audience; Lifetimes of short-lived excited states in a wide range of neutron-richfission fragments were measured using the recoil distance Doppler shift(RDDS) technique, which was applied to fusion-fission reactions in inversekinematics for the first time. The fission fragments were identified eventby-event in mass, charge, and atomic number using the VAMOS magneticspectrometer at GANIL. Gamma rays originating from the fission fragmentswere measured with the EXOGAM array of Ge Clover detectors aroundthe target position. Using a degrader, the change in the Doppler shiftof the $\gamma$ ray allows the application of the RDDS method. Details of theexperimental technique will be discussed and the status for the ongoinganalysis for odd-mass yttrium isotopes will be presented.

Abstract: International audience; 2+ and 1− states in Zr90 were populated via the (O17,O′17γ) reaction at 340 MeV. The γ decay was measured with high resolution using the AGATA (advanced γ tracking array demonstrator array). Differential cross sections were obtained at few different angles for the scattered particle. The results of the elastic scattering and inelastic excitation of 2+,3−, and 1− states are compared with distorted-wave Born approximation (DWBA) calculations, using both the standard collective form factor and a form factor obtained by folding microscopically calculated transition densities. This allowed to extract the isoscalar component of the 1− state at 6.424 MeV. The comparison of the present (O17,O′17γ) data with existing (γ,γ′) and (p,p′) data in the corresponding region of the γ continuum (6–11 MeV), characterized by a large E1 component, shows completely different behaviors of the cross section as a function of the nuclear excitation energy. The comparison of the data with DWBA calculations suggests a decrease of the isoscalar strength in the cross section with increasing excitation energy.

Abstract: It is almost 80 years since Hans Bethe described the level density as a non-interacting gas of protons and neutrons. In all these years, experimental data were interpreted within this picture of a fermionic gas. However, the renewed interest of measuring level density using various techniques calls for a revision of this description. In particular, the wealth of nuclear level densities measured with the Oslo method favors the constant-temperature level density over the Fermi-gas picture. From the basis of experimental data, we demonstrate that nuclei exhibit a constant-temperature level density behavior for all mass regions and at least up to the neutron threshold., Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures

Abstract: International audience; Electromagnetic transition strengths and spectroscopic quadrupole moments for Sm-140 were measured by means of multi-step Coulomb excitation with radioactive beam at the ISOLDE facility at CERN. A complementary experiment was performed at the Heavy Ion Laboratory in Warsaw to assign spins for non-yrast states using the angular correlation technique. Based on the new experimental data previous spin assignments need to be revised.

Abstract: A new segmented silicon-array called MUSETT has been built for the study of heavy elements using the Recoil-Decay-Tagging technique. MUSETT is located at the focal plane of the VAMOS spectrometer at GANIL and is used in conjunction with a γ-ray array at the target position. This paper describes the device, which consists of four 10×10 cm 2 Si detectors and its associated front-end electronics based on highly integrated ASICs electronics. The triggerless readout electronics, the data acquisition and the analysis tools developed for its characterization are presented. This device was commissioned at GANIL with the EXOGAM γ-ray spectrometer using the fusion–evaporation reaction 197 Au( 22 Ne,5 n ) 214 Ac. Additionally, the performance of the VAMOS Wien filter used during the in-beam commissioning is also reported.

Abstract: The shape transition in the neutron-rich Os isotopes is studied by investigating the neutron-rich 196Os nucleus through in-beam γ-ray spectroscopy using a two-proton transfer reaction from a 198Pt target to a 82Se beam. The beam-like recoils were detected and identified with the large-acceptance magnetic spectrometer PRISMA, and the coincident γ rays were measured with the advanced gamma tracking array (AGATA) demonstrator. The de-excitation of the low-lying levels of the yrast-band of 196Os were identified for the first time. The results are compared with state-of-the-art beyond-mean-field calculations, performed for the even-even 188−198Os isotopes. The new results suggest a smooth transition in the Os isotopes from a more axial rotational behavior towards predominately vibrational nuclei through triaxial configurations. An almost perfect γ-unstable/triaxial rotor yrast band is predicted for 196Os which is in agreement with the experimentally measured excited states.

Abstract: Background: An unexpected enhancement in the $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-ray strength function, as compared to the low-energy tail of the giant dipole resonance (GDR), has been observed for Sc, Ti, V, Fe, and Mo isotopes for ${E}_{\ensuremath{\gamma}}l4$ MeV. This enhancement was not observed in subsequent analyses on Sn isotopes, but a pygmy dipole resonance (PDR) centered at ${E}_{\ensuremath{\gamma}}\ensuremath{\approx}8$ MeV was however detected. The $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-ray strength functions measured for Cd isotopes exhibit both features over the range of isotopes, with the low-energy enhancement decreasing and PDR strength increasing as a function of neutron number. This suggests a transitional region for the onset of low-energy enhancement, and also that the PDR strength depends on the number of neutrons.Purpose: The $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-ray strength functions of $^{105--108}\mathrm{Pd}$ have been measured in order to further explore the proposed transitional region.Method: Experimental data were obtained at the Oslo Cyclotron Laboratory by using the charged particle reactions $(^{3}\mathrm{He},\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}^{3}\mathrm{He}{}^{\ensuremath{'}}\ensuremath{\gamma})$ and ($^{3}\mathrm{He},\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}\ensuremath{\alpha}\ensuremath{\gamma}$) on $^{106,108}\mathrm{Pd}$ target foils. Particle-$\ensuremath{\gamma}$ coincidence measurements provided information on initial excitation energies and the corresponding $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-ray spectra, which were used to extract the level densities and $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-ray strength functions according to the Oslo method.Results: The $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-ray strength functions indicate a sudden increase in magnitude for ${E}_{\ensuremath{\gamma}}g4$ MeV, which is interpreted as a PDR centered at ${E}_{\ensuremath{\gamma}}\ensuremath{\approx}8$ MeV. An enhanced $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-ray strength at low energies is also observed for $^{105}\mathrm{Pd}$, which is the lightest isotope measured in this work.Conclusions: A PDR is clearly identified in the $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-ray strength functions of $^{105--108}\mathrm{Pd}$, and a low-energy enhancement is observed for $^{105}\mathrm{Pd}$. Further, the results correspond and agree very well with the observations from the Cd isotopes, and support the suggested transitional region for the onset of low-energy enhancement with decreasing mass number. The neutron number dependency of the PDR strength is also evident.

Abstract: New positive-parity states, having a bandlike structure, were observed in $^{105}\mathrm{Ru}$. The nucleus was produced in an induced fission reaction, and the prompt $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-rays, emitted from the fragments, were detected by the EUROBALL III multidetector array. The partial scheme of excited $^{105}\mathrm{Ru}$ levels is analyzed within the triaxial-rotor-plus-particle approach.

Abstract: The 64Ni beam, with an energy of 460 MeV, was delivered by the LNL tandem-ALPI accelerator complex.; Lifetimes of the low-lying (11/2−) states in 63,65Co have been measured employing the recoil distance doppler shift method (RDDS) with the AGATA γ -ray array and the PRISMA mass spectrometer. These nuclei were populated via a multinucleon transfer reaction by bombarding a 238U target with a beam of 64Ni. The experimental B(E2) reduced transition probabilities for 63,65Co are well reproduced by large-scale shell-model calculations that predict a constant trend of the B(E2) values up to the N = 40 67Co isotope.

Abstract: The $^{208}$Pb($p$,$n\gamma\bar p$) $^{207}$Pb reaction at a beam energy of 30 MeV has been used to excite the anti-analog of the giant dipole resonance (AGDR) and to measure its $\gamma$-decay to the isobaric analog state in coincidence with proton decay of IAS. The energy of the transition has also been calculated with the self-consistent relativistic random-phase approximation (RRPA), and found to be linearly correlated to the predicted value of the neutron-skin thickness ($\Delta R_{pn}$). By comparing the theoretical results with the measured transition energy, the value of 0.190 $\pm$ 0.028 fm has been determined for $\Delta R_{pn}$ of $^{208}$Pb, in agreement with previous experimental results. The AGDR excitation energy has also been used to calculate the symmetry energy at saturation ($J=32.7 \pm 0.6$ MeV) and the slope of the symmetry energy ($L=49.7 \pm 4.4$ MeV), resulting in more stringent constraints than most of the previous studies., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1205.2325

Abstract: Particle-gamma coincidences have been measured to obtain gamma-ray spectra as a function of excitation energy for 231-233Th and 237-239U. The level densities, which were extracted using the Oslo method, show a constant temperature behavior. The isotopes display very similar temperatures in the quasi-continuum, however, the even-odd isotopes reveal a constant entropy increase Delta S compared to their even-even neighbors. The entropy excess depends on available orbitals for the last unpaired valence neutron of the heated nuclear system. Also, experimental microcanonical temperature and heat capacity have been extracted. Several poles in the heat capacity curve support the idea that an almost continuous melting of Cooper pairs is responsible for the constant-temperature behavior., 9 figures

Abstract: A rapid onset of quadrupole deformation is known to occur around the neutron number 60 in the neutron-rich Zr and Sr isotopes. This shape change has made the neutron-rich A = 100 region an active area of experimental and theoretical studies for many decades now. We report in this contribution new experimental results in the neutron rich 96,98Sr investigated by safe Coulomb excitation of radioactive beams at the REX-ISOLDE facility, CERN. Reduced transition probabilities and spectroscopic quadrupole moments have been extracted from the differential Coulomb excitation cross section supporting the scenario of shape coexistence/change at N = 60. Abstract: The nuclear structure of neutron-rich nuclei close to the double-magic nucleus 78Ni has been investigated by measuring the lifetime of excited states. In this contribution, it will be presented the lifetime of the Jπ = 7=2 excited state at 981 keV of the 71Cu isotope, measured using the AGATA Demonstrator coupled to the PRISMA spectrometer and the Köln plunger setup. The nuclei of interest were populated in deep-inelastic reactions in inverse kinematics. The ratios B(E2; 4+ → 2+)=B(E2; 2+ → 0+) measured for the Zn isotopes follow a systematics consistent with a seniority classification.
