Abstract

International audience; The Main Ethiopian Rift, in (East Africa), is a classic example where to analyse the interplay between tectonics and magmatic activity during rifting. This continental rift records indeed all different stages of rift evolution and is characterised by significant volcanic activity spanning from the Oligocene to present. However, despite recent improvements in the knowledge of single volcanic centres thanks to recent scientific projects (e.g., RiftVolc), volcanic activity in many rift sectors still remains poorly documented. In this work we provide new constraints on the timing, evolution and characteristics of the poorly documented volcanic activity at the southern termination of the Main Ethiopian Rift. We present new fieldvolcanological, petrographic, geochemical and geochronological data, together with and the results of a statistical analysis of the distribution of volcanic vents from remote sensing, together with petrographic, geochemical and geochronological analyses on the collected samples, for the Mega and the Dilo-Dukana volcanic fields, near the Kenya-Ethiopia border. In line with previous works, our data delineate the occurrence of two distinct groups of rocks: 1) a group of subalkaline basalts, observed only in the Dilo-Dukana volcanic field, forming a Pliocenic lava basement during Pliocene, faulted during an important rifting phase; 2) a group of alkaline basalts, characterising the Quaternary activity in both areas and sampled from Quaternary volcanic vents or from their associated lava flows, that are associated to several, mainly monogenetic volcanic centres. The products of this activity lay in discordance above the lava platform and seal the rift-related faults. Ar/Ar dating allowed to constrain the large basal lava plateau to 3.7 Ma, whereas the youngest volcanic activity characterizing the two areas dates back to 134 ka for Dilo-Dukana and Holocene age for Mega volcanic field. Interestingly, no direct relations are observed between the Pliocene, roughly N-S major boundary faults of the Ririba Rift and the NE-SW structures feeding the Quaternary volcanic activity, indicating a non-correlation between recent volcanism and rifting in the area. Conversely, our analysis suggests a major influence exerted by deep, inherited structures on the distribution of the recent volcanic vents under a complex, local stress field resulting from a major episode of reorganization of extensional structures in the region, recording the history of related to rift propagation and abandonment.

International audience; The trace-element geochemistry of speleothems is becoming increasingly used for reconstructing palaeoclimate, with a particularemphasis on elements whose concentrations vary according to hydrological conditions at the cave site (e.g. Mg, Sr, Baand U). An important step in interpreting trace-element abundances is understanding the underlying processes of their incorporation.This includes quantifying the fractionation between the solution and speleothem carbonate via partition coefficients(where the partitioning (D) of element X (DX) is the molar ratio [X/Ca] in the calcite divided by the molar ratio [X/Ca] in theparent water) and evaluating the degree of spatial variability across time-constant speleothem layers. Previous studies of howthese elements are incorporated into speleothems have focused primarily on stalagmites and their source waters in naturalcave settings, or have used synthetic solutions under cave-analogue laboratory conditions to produce similar dripstones. However,dripstones are not the only speleothem types capable of yielding useful palaeoclimate information. In this study, weinvestigate the incorporation of Mg, Sr, Ba and U into a subaqueous calcite speleothem (CD3) growing in a natural cave poolin Italy. Pool-water measurements extending back 15 years reveal a remarkably stable geochemical environment owing to thedeep cave setting, enabling the calculation of precise solution [X/Ca]. We determine the trace element variability of ‘modern’subaqueous calcite from a drill core taken through CD3 to derive DMg, DSr, DBa and DU then compare these with publishedcave, cave-analogue and seawater-analogue studies. The DMg for CD3 is anomalously high (0.042 ± 0.002) compared to previousestimates at similar temperatures (~8 °C). The DSr (0.100 ± 0.007) is similar to previously reported values, but datafrom this study as well as those from Tremaine and Froelich (2013) and Day and Henderson (2013) suggest that [Na/Sr] mightplay an important role in Sr incorporation through the potential for Na to outcompete Sr for calcite non-lattice sites. DBa inCD3 (0.086 ± 0.008) is similar to values derived by Day and Henderson (2013) under cave-analogue conditions, whilst DU (0.013 ± 0.002) is almost an order of magnitude lower, possibly due to the unusually slow speleothem growth rates(

Abstract

Poster; Several small lakes occupy a number of levels in the Galleria delle Stalattiti of Corchia Cave, Italy. An important feature of two such lakes is the presence of actively growing, subaqueous calcite mounds. Drill cores from these mounds have been the subject of investigations for several years. 234U-238U ages from the base of these cores, combined with stable isotope data from U-Pb-dated stalagmites collected metres away, suggest that some of the mounds have been growing since ~1 Ma. To provide baseline data for interpreting the geochemical variations of these cores, we commenced a study of modern lake-water chemistry, including stable isotopes of H, C and O, trace elements and organic matter content. Besides demonstrating the exceptionally stable state of these lake systems, the combining of core-top geochemistry with source-water chemistry allows us to explore water-calcite isotope and trace element partitioning, and to evaluate the suitability of this unusual speleothem-forming environment for clumped-isotope palaeothermometry. Preliminary results will be presented in this poster.

7. A record of glacial-interglacial cycles over the last one million years from Antro del Corchia speleothems

Abstract

Antro del Corchia (Corchia Cave) is a large cave located in the Alpi Apuane karst of northern Tuscany, Italy. The cave receives most of its recharge from frontal systems crossing southwestern Europe and western Mediterranean, making the site sensitive to changes in ocean and atmospheric conditions in the North Atlantic. Parts of the cave are rich in speleothems. A suite of stalagmites, flowstones and subaqueous mounds has been sampled to investigate regional palaeoclimate. Stable oxygen and carbon isotopes time series produced from these speleothems, anchored in time using U-Th, U-U and U-Pb isotopic dating, preserve evidence for regional rainfall and temperature changes over millennial and glacial-interglacial timescales that can be linked via the marine-core record to North Atlantic palaeoclimate. A single speleothem core, recovered from a subaqueous mound in the cave, preserves the last 11 glacial-interglacial cycles, constituting a rare and seemingly continuous palaeoclimate record spanning the last 960 ka. More detailed palaeoclimate reconstructions are emerging from the faster growing stalagmites from the cave. The entire speleothem stack provides a means for establishing the timing of glacial terminations and inceptions.

Abstract

Studies of subtropical speleothems, North Atlantic marine cores and Greenland ice cores covering the last glacial cycle suggest that the climates of the high latitude North Atlantic and the Asian monsoon regions were closely coupled. Heinrich Events in the North Atlantic triggered a weakening of the Asian monsoon, whereas abrupt warmings during Dansgaard-Oeschger cycles saw an intensification of the monsoon. It has also been argued that this coupling occurred during glacial terminations, with ice-rafting events during deglaciation leading to suppression of the Asian monsoon. The implication of these patterns is that close coupling between the high latitudes and the tropics in the Northern Hemisphere may be a persistent feature of Late Quaternary climate. We present a replicate speleothem record from Corchia Cave (Italy) which shows that the tropics and high latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere were strongly decoupled during the MIS7d-7c transition, simultaneous with deposition of sapropel S8 in the Mediterranean Sea. Our cave record shows that the strong precession-driven intensification of Asian and African monsoons brought wet conditions in the Mediterranean region, yet at this time the high and middle latitudes of Europe were in the grip of a deep stadial. Unlike the millennial-scale climate swings of the last glacial and the inferred response to ice-rafting events through the last four terminations, the Asian monsoon was apparently unaffected by these high latitude stadial conditions. Furthermore, it seems the exceptionally strong insolation increase at this time had little noticeable effect on ice-sheet dynamics over the northern continents, suggesting that tropical - high latitude coupling maybe either a transient feature or, at the very least, more complicated than previously thought

Poster; International audience; Une carotte de 23 cm a été extraite d'un monticule de calcite subaquatique, développée sur le fond d'un petit plan d'eau dans la grotte de Corchia (Italie). Les datations 234U/230Th et 234U/238U montrent que la croissance de ce spéléothème couvre les derniers 960 000 ans. L'analyse pétrographique du spéléothème et de ses variations de δ18O et δ13C témoignent de l'enregistrement quasi-continu des cycles glaciaires-interglaciaires sur toute cette période. Les analyses pétrographiques et isotopiques ont été complétées par l'analyse des concentrations en éléments traces d'une part, et du signal de fluorescence de la matière organique piégée d'autre part. Enfin, l'enregistrement isotopique de ce spéléothème est comparé aux enregistrements longs des carottes de glace et marines et aux données astronomiques. Cette archive unique en son genre fournit pour la première fois une référence continentale à long terme pour discuter du timing, de la durée et de la variabilité climatique des interglaciaires passés et peut-être mieux comprendre la nature des forçages orbitaux mis en jeu

Poster; Des études impliquant des enregistrements de spéléothèmes subtropicaux, carottes marines de l'Atlantique Nord et carottes de glace du Groenland, couvrant le dernier cycle glaciaire, suggèrent que le climat des hautes latitudes de l'Atlantique Nord et l'intensité de la mousson asiatique étaient étroitement couplés. Les événements de Heinrich dans l'Atlantique Nord déclenchaient un affaiblissement de la mousson asiatique, tandis que les réchauffements abrupts durant les cycles de Dansgaard-Oeschger étaient associés à une intensification de la mousson. Il a également été soutenu que ce couplage ait existé durant les terminaisons glaciaires, avec des événements de débâcle glaciaire durant la déglaciation conduisant à la suppression de la mousson asiatique. Ces phénomènes pourraient impliquer que le couplage étroit entre hautes latitudes et tropiques dans l'hémisphère Nord est une caractéristique persistante du climat au Quaternaire supérieur. Nous présentons ici un enregistrement répliqué de spéléothèmes de la grotte de Corchia (Italie) montrant que les tropiques et les hautes latitudes de l'hémisphère Nord étaient fortement découplées durant la transition MIS 7d-7c, simultanément avec le dépôt de sapropèles S8 dans la Méditerranée. Cet enregistrement indique que la forte intensification des moussons africaines et asiatiques, conduites par la précession, a apporté des conditions humides sur la région méditerranéenne, alors qu'à cette époque les hautes et moyennes latitudes en Europe étaient soumises à des conditions stadiaires marquées. La mousson asiatique n'était donc apparemment pas affectée par ces conditions stadiaires durant cette période suggérant que le couplage tropiques-hautes latitudes pourrait avoir un caractère transitoire ou, a minima, être plus compliqué qu'il n'y paraît.
