International audience; Chromium coated zirconium based nuclear fuel claddings are among the most promising evolutive concepts in the field of Enhanced Accident Tolerant Fuel (EATF) developments [1-2]. The development of these new claddings has been accelerated since 2011 and the Fukushima-DAICHI nuclear accident. Among some other objectives, one of the main ideas is to develop new concepts of nuclear fuel claddings able to delay the High Temperature (HT) steam oxidation kinetics and the associated hydrogen production (explosion risk) and to improve the resultant Post-Quenching (PQ) cladding strength and ductility upon and following hypothetical accident conditions such as Loss-of-Coolant-Accident (LOCA). In this context, Cr-coated Zr based alloys, with 10-20µm thick Cr coating (PVD deposition), show promising behaviour .

International audience; Le cobalt constitue une grande partie des déchets radioactifs du circuit primaire des réacteurs nucléaires. Le remplacement des revêtements durs à base de cobalt fait l'objet de recherches depuis des années dans les applications nucléaires. A ce jour, il n'existe pas d'alliage capable de résister à l'abrasion et à la corrosion à 350°C et 150bar de pression pendant des cycles longs. Les alliages complexes concentrés constitués de Cr-Fe-Mo-Ni-Ti ont montré des propriétés prometteuses pour ces applications [1].La méthode CALPHAD (CALculation of PHAse Diagram) a été choisie pour déterminer les compositions les plus intéressantes de ce système. Pour cela, une évaluation critique de tous les sous-systèmes constitutifs a été réalisée. Comme ce système présente plusieurs phases de Frank-Kasper (σ, µ, χ, R, Laves), les modèles ont été discutés et choisis en fonction de la structure cristalline. La stabilité du réseau (lattice stability) et l'enthalpie de formation des composés stables et métastables ont été calculées par DFT (Density Functional Theory). Il a également été constaté que certains systèmes manquent de données fiables ou que des contradictions existent parmi différentes études. Par conséquent, la détermination expérimentale des équilibres de phase dans ces systèmes a été effectuée. Des échantillons du système Cr-Mo-Ti ont été synthétisés pour déterminer les limites de phase des phases de Laves et l'extension de la lacune de miscibilité Cr-Mo au système ternaire. Le système binaire Cr-Ti a été réoptimisé, et les systèmes ternaires où il est présent seront réévalués.

International audience; In the field of material science for energy applications, zirconium hydrides are studied both fortheir useful application for hydrogen storage and for their negative effect on mechanical propertiesof the nuclear fuel cladding material (zirconium) in water cooled reactors. At the atomic scale,the tight-binding (TB) approximation has proven to be a satisfying method to develop potentialsthat are both accurate and computationally tractable to model zirconium hydrides. Such poten tials are defined by a fixed number of parameters that need to be accurately identified for themodel to be reliable. The reliability is indeed closely related to the uncertainties associated withparameters [1]. Even if the use of parametric potentials, TB or semi-empirical ones, is widely es tablished in the literature [2], very few studies discuss the quantification of such uncertainties [3–5].This work aims at quantifying the uncertainty associated with the calibration of TB poten tials. A previously developed TB potential [6]is used, focusing on its ability to reproduce elasticconstants and lattice parameters of δ (cubic) and (tetragonal) zirconium hydrides. UncertaintyQuantification (UQ) methods, based on polynomial chaos expansion and Bayesian inference, areused to estimate the parameters uncertainties, through their a posteriori probability distributionsand starting from a limited number of experimental and DFT data. The accuracy of the TBpotential - with respect to the available data - is thus improved. In addition, having characterizedthe uncertainty on the model parameters, we can estimate the uncertainty propagation on anycomputed property.

International audience; The ternary Cr-Mo-Ti system is a constitutive alloying system for steels and titanium alloys. Ferritic alloys with Cr, Mo and Ti contents have been studied, achieving good mechanical properties, corrosion resistance and microstructural stability to 550°C. Beta titanium alloys are nowadays largely employed in biomedical applications, and aviation and aerospace industries. The system is also interesting for the development of new high-entropy alloys with a body-centered cubic structure. The Calphad method is a useful tool to explore and study all these alloy systems.Nevertheless, the experimental data about this ternary system remains scarce and no recent data was published. Thermodynamical assessments were carried out by Lee et al.[1] and recently by Hu et al. [2]. The first assessment was based on the solid phase boundaries in the Ti-rich region published by Elliot et al. [3]. In the respective re-assessment, they added with a low weight data from Grum-Grizhimailo and Gromova [4].Therefore, we will study the Laves phase extension in the ternary Cr-Mo-Ti system. DFT calculation will be used in order to obtain the enthalpy of formation of the metastable end-members. Cumulate data will be evaluated and used to re-assess the ternary system.References[1] J. Y. International audience; Machine learning (ML) methods are becoming the state-of-the-art in numerous domains, including material sciences.In this manuscript, we demonstrate how ML can be used to efficiently predict several properties in solid-state chemistry applications, in particular, to estimate the heat of formation of a given complex crystallographic phase (here, the sigma-phase, tP30, D8_{b}).Based on an independent and unprecedented large first principles dataset containing about 10,000 sigma-compounds with n=14 different elements, we used a supervised learning approach to predict all the 500,000 possible configurations.From a random set of 1000 samples, predictions are given within a mean absolute error of 23 meV/at (2kJ/mol) on the heat of formation and 0.06\AA on the tetragonal cell parameters. We show that deep neural network regression results in a significant improvement in the accuracy of the predicted output compared to traditional regression techniques. We also integrated descriptors having physical nature (atomic radius, number of valence electrons), and we observe that they improve the model precision. We conclude from our numerical experiments that the learning database composed of the binary-compositions only, plays a major role in predicting the higher degree system configurations.Our results open a broad avenue to efficient high-throughput investigations of the combinatorial binary computations for multicomponent complex intermetallic phase prediction.

International audience; The research of environmentally friendly, cheap and performant materials is one of the major challenges for thermoelectricity development. To make the investigation of new candidates easier, the support of experimental work by calculations is of great importance. In this study, we combine screening calculations by DFT of a large set of compositions to highlight stable and non-metallic compounds, with the experimental study of the most promising materials. This presentation focuses on the experimental development and the physical properties of these new candidates for thermoelectricity.Our screening calculations were applied on ternary intermetallic compounds. Among the stable and non-metallic materials identified, we selected the most interesting phases for experimental study, such as SrCuSb, SrZn2P2 or HfCoP, which were never or few reported in the literature. They were elaborated by new and straightforward synthesis routes based on mechanical alloying or conventional melting methods.The stability and thermoelectric properties of the phases are discussed and compared with the calculations to validate the method. Some of the new compounds show promising properties which could be further improved by doping. In addition to the presentation of new materials, we propose a promising method to discover and develop novel thermoelectric compounds which can be expanded to other classes of materials.

International audience; Searching for a suitable replacement for cobalt-based alloyssuch as Stellite 6 [1], whichis used in wear-resistant coatings for nuclear applications, high entropy alloys, or moreaccurately complex concentrated alloys (CCA), have shown some promising properties [2].Alloying elements where chosen considering the chemical composition of the substrate toensure chemical and mechanical compatibility. In our case, this is 316L stainless steel, whichis the most used material in valves and control rods. CCA coatings should provide wear andcorrosion resistance between room temperature and 400°C for long time cycles. Based onthese considerations and previous works [3], we selected the Cr-Fe-Mo-Ti system.Our work aims to develop new alloys using an iterative methodology. It consists increating a robust database using the CALPHAD (Calculation of phase diagrams) method topredict thermodynamic properties. Then we will perform solidification and equilibriumcalculations of different alloys compositions. High-quality database requires reliable data,which will be obtained from the combination of electronic structures calculations by DFT(Density Functional Theory) method with our own experimental work. Using this tool, we willdesign coatings alloys using additive manufacturing techniques according to favourablemicrostructures. Finally, tribology and corrosion tests will be performed on these samples.In this presentation, we will focus on CALPHAD modelling. We will discuss constitutivebinary systems adopted from the literature, and we will assess constitutive ternaries.

International audience; Mo, Pd and Rh are fission products that accumulate with the burn-up of oxide nuclear fuels. They precipitate as metallic inclusions together with Ru and Tc forming so-called █white inclusions█. They mainly concentrate at grain boundaries but have been recently observed in the fuel-cladding interaction zone, deep in the structural materials. Their impact on fuel assemblies█ lifetime is not yet fully understood [1].Predicting the thermodynamic behaviour of the █white phases█ is then required to better model the thermochemistry of the nuclear fuel. It is thus needed to assess the thermodynamic model of the Mo-Pd-Rh-Ru-Tc quinary system as well as its subsystems. The present work is part of a study that aims at assessing the full Calphad description of the whole quinary Mo-Pd-Rh-Ru-Tc system. Since the thermodynamic model for the Pd-Rh-Ru system has already been published by Gossé at al.[2]. The presentation will focus on new assessments of both Mo-Pd and Mo-Rh binary systems showing significant improvement compared to the previous studies [3, 4].The present Calphad modelling relies on a critical review of the literature, complemented by new experimental investigations such as differential thermal analyses, heat treatments, SEM-EDS analyses and crystal-chemistry investigations. Since experimental thermodynamic data are very scarce due to the refractory behaviour of such alloys, Special Quasirandom Structures (SQS) methodology coupled with Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations were used to evaluate the mixing enthalpies of the bcc, fcc and hcp solid solutions. International audience; Novel high-performance materials are needed for developing thermoelectric devices. Oneway to answer this need is to screen a large number of compounds by first-principlescalculations and to synthesize the most promising compounds.We focus our investigation on the ternary intermetallic compounds T-M-X, with T a transitionmetal, a rare earth or an alkaline earth metal, M an element from the first line of thetransition metal and X, a metalloid. For each prototype, all the possible T-M-X combinationsare investigated by DFT calculations. Among all these candidates, those which arepredicted as thermodynamically unstable and metallic are dismissed. For the mostpromising compounds, predicted as stable and semiconductor, complementary calculationsas the phonon band structure and additional BoltzTrap electronic transport calculations arecarried out to better assess their thermoelectric properties. After those theoretical steps,experimental investigations are performed to confirm calculations.The study of the equimolar TMX in four different prototypes lead to the investigation of 2280possible configurations. Then our screening process allowed us to highlight more than 45possible new semiconductors. Among these, new compositions such as HfCoP, SrCuSb orTaFeSb were predicted to be stable and non-metallic. Complementary calculations allowedto estimate their lattice thermal conductivity and Seebeck coefficient.

International audience; Dans le but de trouver de nouveaux matériaux thermoélectriques, une approche de criblage sur un large ensemble large de composés ternaires par des méthodes de calculs des propriétés électroniques basées sur la théorie de la fonctionnelle de la densité (DFT) a été mise en oeuvre. Cette approche a permis d’examiner 570 compositions possibles d’intermétalliques ternaires TMX: T un métal de transition des colonnes Ti, V, Cr, une terre rare ou un alcalino-terreux, M un élément de la première ligne des métaux de transition et X un élément sp (Al, Si, P, Sn et Sb). Le processus de criblage se fait en plusieurs étapes dans le but d’identifier les composés stables et ceux qui sont semi-conducteurs.Dans un premier temps, une étude systématique des bases de données cristallographiques a permis d’identifier quatre types structuraux prédominants pour la stœchiométrie « 1 :1 :1 » : TiNiSi (Pnma, 62), MgAgAs (F-43m, 216), BeZrSi(P63/mmc, 194) and ZrNiAl (P-62m, 189). Toutes les compositions possibles (13 T * 9 M * 5 X = 570) ont été envisagées et calculées par DFT pour les 4 prototypes structuraux. Ces calculs ont permis de prédire pour chaque composition si elle est stable thermodynamiquement, et si oui quel est le prototype structural le plus favorable. Ensuite, la structure électronique de chaque composé a été analysée afin d’éliminer les TMX qui sont métalliques pour ne garder que les semi-conducteurs. Ce travail de criblage a ainsi permis d’identifier 472 composés stables parmi lesquels 21 sont prédits comme étant non-métalliques.

International audience; A series of Mg-Ni or Mg-Cu alloys with Mg content comprised between 55 and 77 at% Mg was prepared by mechanical alloying with the aim of synthesizing Mg2Ni and Mg2Cu phases, respectively. Their morphology and structural properties were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray Diffraction (XRD). High Pressure Differential Scanning Calorimetry (HP-DSC) was used to evaluate their hydrogenation properties. For the Mg-Ni series, 8 hours of milling were enough to synthesize the Mg2Ni alloy. The highest reversible hydrogen capacity (2.8 mass%) was obtained for 70 at% Mg sample without the need of any activation treatment. For Mg-Cu series, 83 mass% of Mg2Cu was obtained after 4 hours of milling. From the view point of alloying composition, Mg-rich samples show better crystallinity of Mg2Cu phase. Under hydrogen, the Mg2Cu powder mixtures decompose and form MgH2 hydride storing 1.56 mass% of hydrogen for 66 at% Mg. For the Mg-Ni series, Cu or Al elements (1 to 10 mass%) were added during milling. HP-DSC runs show that they destabilize the hydride phase due to alloying effects.

Hydrogen is the only gas able to dissolve in aluminum. The solubility S of hydrogen in Al obeys the Sieverts’ law and S is much larger in the liquid phase (above 660.4°C) than in the solid one. This might lead to the formation of porosity during aluminum casting. In the present work, the ternary system Al-H-RE (RE= Er, La, Y) is investigated. The equilibria between the different phases are determined in the presence of liquid Al, RE and H2 gas by both experimental measurements and phase diagram calculations. The possible formation of metallic hydrides and the change in the hydrogen solubility S are discussed regarding pressure and temperature determining the thermodynamics of the system.

International audience; First-principles (FP) calculations of total energies for 32 different configurations of the μ phase in the binary system Nb-Ni is used with the compound energy formalism (CEF) to model finite temperatures thermodynamic properties. A comparison with Connolly Williams Method-Cluster Variation Method (CWM-CVM)calculations indicates that the CEF describes temperature dependent site occupancies as well as the CWM-CVM approximation within the temperature range of interest for applications. This result seems to indicate that the Bragg-Williams-Gorski Approximation (BWGA) used by the CEF is sufficient to describe the μ phase. A phase diagram is also calculated using the description of the μ phase derived in the present work together with an available Calphad assessment for the other phases of this system. CEF and CVM description of the single phase properties as a function of composition and temperature are striking similar. This approach allows a great improvement of the description of the thermodynamical properties as a function of composition compared to the calphad procedure generally used up to now. It is expected that the CEF description of the μ phase derived from first-principles energetics will yield more reliable extrapolations into higher-order systems.

In the frame of the research on intermetallic compounds for nickel-hydride battery application, attention is focused on AB2 alloys so called Laves phases. ZrCr2, for example, exhibits a large hydrogen capacity but a too low hydride formation equilibrium pressure for practical application. Moreover, the electrolyte (concentrated potassium hydroxide) involves surface passivation through blocking electrochemical mechanisms. First, the study is devoted to the adjustment of the hydride thermodynamic properties regarded to electrochemical application. This was achieved on ZrCr2 by substitution of chromium by nickel. In a second part surface properties are modified by the precipitation of secondary phases in equilibrium with the Laves phase. The Zr-Ni-Cr phase diagram has been determined at 1000°C in the ZrCr2-ZrNi-Ni-Cr region and has revealed large solubility of nickel in C14 and C15 Laves phases as well as equilibrium of these phases with three Zr-Ni intermetallic compounds. The knowledge of this diagram has allowed the synthesis of biphasic alloys where the Laves phase of constant composition is in equilibrium with a secondary phase at variable rate. The study of hydrogenation properties of Laves phases has shown the possibility of adjusting the equilibrium pressure of its hydrides to electrochemical application keeping high hydrogen capacity. The hydrogenation properties of secondary phases were also characterised. Finally, it appeared that secondary phases precipitation with increasing rate in the Laves phase matrix produces a spectacular increase of electrochemical capacities. Such an effect is interpreted by the modification of the surface in contact with electrolyte and by the diffusion of hydrogen from electrolyte to the Laves phase through the secondary phase when present., Dans le cadre de la recherche de composés intermétalliques hydrurables pour l'application aux batteries nickel-hydrure, des phases de stoechiométrie AB2 appelées phases de Laves sont étudiées. ZrCr2, par exemple, possède une grande capacité de stockage de l'hydrogène mais une pression d'équilibre de formation de l'hydrure trop faible pour l'application. De plus, le milieu électrolytique (potasse concentrée) provoque une passivation du matériau bloquant les mécanismes électrochimiques. L'étude porte d'une part sur l'adaptation des propriétés thermodynamiques d'hydrogénation à l'application électrochimique du composé ZrCr2 par substitution du chrome par le nickel et d'autre part sur la modification des propriétés de surface de la phase par précipitation de phases secondaires en équilibre avec la phase de Laves. Pour cela, le diagramme d'équilibre Zr-Ni-Cr a été déterminé à 1000°C dans la région ZrCr2-ZrNi-Ni-Cr et a mis en évidence la très large solubilité du nickel dans les phases de Laves de type C14 et C15 ainsi que les équilibres de ces phases avec trois phases du système binaire Zr-Ni. La connaissance de ce diagramme a permis la synthèse d'alliages biphasés où la phase de Laves de composition constante est en équilibre avec un taux variable de phases secondaires. L'étude des propriétés d'hydrogénation des phases de Laves montre la possibilité d'adapter la pression d'équilibre de leurs hydrures à l'application électrochimique tout en conservant une grande capacité d'hydrogénation. Les propriétés d'hydrogénation des phases secondaires ont par ailleurs été caractérisées. Enfin, la précipitation des phases secondaires en proportion croissante dans une matrice de phase de Laves à composition constante apporte une amélioration très substantielle des capacités électrochimiques. Un tel effet est interprété par la modification de la nature de la surface en contact avec l'électrolyte et par le transfert de l'hydrogène de l'électrolyte vers la phase de Laves à travers la phase secondaire quand elle est présente.

Le présent recueil, issu de deux journées d’étude organisées à l’Institut catholique d’études supérieures (La Roche-sur-Yon), s’efforce d’en brosser un panorama, à partir de cas relevant de disciplines, de périodes et de corpus suffisamment variés pour présenter au chercheur en sciences humaines une vue générale des questions que suscitent ses propres pratiques en lien avec de telles sources. À la lumière de ces études, des questions récurrentes déterminent la recherche documentaire : ce que sont les sources, par quel examen critique les évaluer, comment les organiser, enfin comment élaborer un récit scientifique fidèle autant que possible à leurs enseignements.La source est-elle intègre, authentique, sincère, représentative ? Son témoignage, parfois polémique, est aussi lacunaire parce que séparé de la culture dans laquelle il s’intégrait et que cherche à reconstituer le chercheur, à la manière d’un puzzle dont il ne subsisterait que quelques pièces. La critique des sources navigue entre une lecture littérale et une lecture hypercritique. Cette dernière risque de disqualifier par principe tout récit historien fondé sur des sources jugées ni sûres, ni vérifiables, ni exploitables, comme les récits légendaires de la fondation de Rome. L’esprit critique, pourtant nécessaire à la déontologie scientifique, peut paralyser le discours savant quand il est systématisé. Mais comment apprécier un degré approprié de critique et un degré excessif ? International audience; Quand il entre dans la salle de consultation au palais du Saint-Office, le chercheur s’y rend avec des opinions et des principes susceptibles de lui dicter un récit historique préconçu. Il court le risque d’y modeler les sources par un travail de sélection, d’occultation ou de surinterprétation. Face à ce conflit entre ses valeurs et sa déontologie, doit-il se contraindre à l’impératif : « défense à l’éthique d’entrer dans la salle de travail » ? Une double menace le guette.La présente étude aborde surtout les écueils pour lesquels la déontologie du chercheur cède à l’éthique : les résultats virent alors, selon ses opinions personnelles, à la validation de la légende noire de la censure ou, au contraire, à sa déconstruction par une volonté systématique de démystification, ou bien au discours apologétique d’une censure légitime et conforme à l’état de droit ou, au contraire, à la dénonciation d’une erreur judiciaire.L’autre menace, en sens inverse, accommode l’éthique à l’exigence scientifique : par crainte d’une sorte d’ethnocentrisme et d’un jugement de valeur présomptueux ou anachronique contre les censeurs de curie, le savant abandonnerait toute velléité d’évaluation morale pour adopter un relativisme culturel, selon lequel les censures de l’Index et du Saint-Office présentent une tout autre culture que la nôtre, qu’il serait interdit de juger. La conscience morale déserte alors face à la crainte de l’anachronisme antiscientifique (et à la mode du « tout se vaut, tout est affaire de culture »). Si la première menace est désastreuse pour la science, la seconde émousse l’éthique.Trouve-t-il le remède à cette abolition de la déontologie dans l’éthique, ou inversement, par un dédoublement entre sa conscience scientifique et sa conscience morale ? Pareille séparation, outre la psychopathologie qu’elle supposerait, confinerait les valeurs éthiques à un corpus de préjugés immuables et tabous, solidaires d’un charlatanisme historique. La connaissance de l’intérieur, la pénétration intellectuelle des sources et de leur environnement, la juste appréciation des procédures favorisent une meilleure intelligence des censures passées, quitte à corriger ce que le récit émancipateur et citoyen peut avoir de naïf et de caricatural. La sagacité apportée par la science historique affine la conscience éthique et politique, dont la confrontation avec les données scientifiques s’apparente, elle aussi, à une ascèse et à une maturation.

International audience; L’hypercritique, en tant que critique radicale, critique des pratiques critiques de la première modernité, déconstruit les philosophies émancipatrices, les analyse comme des narrations où le sujet narrateur se prend comme objet narré pour raconter sa marche héroïque vers l’émancipation : « La fonction narrative », écrit Lyotard dans La condition postmoderne, « perd ses foncteurs, le grand héros, les grands périls, les grands périples et le grand but » . La critique de la modernité ne passe pas par un examen des postulats de la pensée moderne (par exemple la validité de l’idée de perfectibilité humaine ou sociale), mais d’abord par une comparaison de la philosophie de l’Histoire avec ses réalisations. L’amer constat des échecs des grands récits modernes n’empêche pas Lyotard de maintenir un idéal de justice. Le situer dans l’ordre autonome et hétérogène de l’Histoire, voilà la leçon qu’il tire de son hypercritique postmoderne. Il y a un différend insurmontable entre l’Idée (de justice, de liberté) et le réel. Seul ce dernier accueille la narration.
