Abstract: International audience; The chicken chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) is an extraembryonic membrane that is vital for the embryo. It undergoes profound cell differentiation between 11 and 15 days of embryonic incubation (EID), which corresponds to the acquisition of its physiological functions. To gain insight into the functional genes that accompany these biological changes, RNA sequencing of the CAM at EID11 and EID15 was performed. Results showed that CAM maturation coincides with the overexpression of 4225 genes, including many genes encoding proteins involved in mineral metabolism, innate immunity, homeostasis, angiogenesis, reproduction, and regulation of hypoxia. Of these genes, some exhibit variability in expression depending on the chicken breed (broiler versus layer breeds). Besides the interest of these results for the poultry sector, the identification of new functional gene candidates opens additional research avenues in the field of developmental biology.

Abstract: International audience; We developed a decimetric size model based on coupling generalized Darcy's law and heat-transfer equations to model viscous dense non-aqueous phase liquid (DNAPL) pumping through highly permeable porous media under non-isothermal conditions. The presence of fingering and non-wetting phase ganglia was modeled through an unsteady capillary diffusion coefficient and an arbitrary heterogeneous permeability field. The model was validated using existing experimental data of a simple case, an oil injection in a 2D tank packed with glass beads. Next, we compared the results of this model against a DNAPL extracting situation in the 2D tank to better understand the two-phase flow behavior in highly permeable porous media. We found that natural convection during heating plays an essential role in heat transfer, especially in the wetting phase zone. By adding the dynamic effect (unsteady conditions) we were better able to describe the presence of the ganglia in porous media. We observed good agreement between modeled and experimental oil saturation curves until the breakthrough point, with a mean relative error of about 10% for low and high flow rates, and 8% and 16% after breakthrough for low and high flow rates, respectively. Extracting viscous oil at low flow rates and high temperature generates less fingering and is well described by the generalized Darcy's law. The remobilization of residual non-wetting ganglia after the breakthrough point at the outlet is, however, difficult to simulate using the generalized Darcy's law. In the end, we treated this issue by using a perturbed permeability field to simulate the observed fingering in the 2D tank.

Abstract: 133http://www.gip-recherche-justice.fr/IMG/pdf/179-RF_Melot_Conflits_Environ.pdf; Les conflits environnementaux sont devenus l'objet d'un nombre important de travaux issus des différentes disciplines des sciences sociales, si l'on s'en tient simplement au cadre des recherches menées en France. La production scientifique française sur la thématique des conflits d'usage des espaces et des conflits environnementaux, telle qu'elle ressort des recensions bibliographiques (Caron, Rialland, 2001) ou d'ouvrages rassemblant des contributions sur le sujet (Melé, 2004; Kirat, Torre, 2008) montre la diversité des sujets abordés et des méthodes sollicitées. Il ressort de ces éléments de recension que de nombreux travaux (sociologiques, géographiques, économiques) sont centrés sur les acteurs des conflits, au travers d'entretiens, d'observations, d'analyse de périodiques ou de documents associatifs (pour un exemple de sociologie de l'action associative, cf. Barthélémy, Weber, 1993). Ces travaux peuvent s'appuyer sur des études quantitatives, comme lorsqu'il s'agit de mettre en évidence, sur une base géographique et statistique, des typologies dans l'apparition, la fréquence et la durée de certains conflits environnementaux - cf.les travaux s'appuyant sur le dépouillement de la presse associative (Charlier, 1999). D'autres s'intéressent aux arrangements informels ou institutionnels visant à régler ces conflits environnementaux par le biais d'analyses monographiques approfondies au niveau d'un territoire, de manière à saisir les logiques d'acteurs qui s'expriment en dehors, en marge, ou dans le prolongement du cadre administratif et judiciaire (Beuret, 2006).

Abstract: International audience; In oviparous species, the egg contains protective systems and provides energy and nutrients that support the development of the embryo until hatching. During embryonic development, extraembryonic structures are vital to assimilate egg nutrients, to protect the embryo, to ensure gaseous exchange and to accumulate metabolic waste. The chorioallantoic membrane (CAM), which develops in close contact with the inner eggshell from day 5 of incubation, is a highly vascularized structure. The CAM is located between the eggshell membranes (ESM, outer side) and the allantoic fluid that collects embryonic waste (inner side). The CAM was reported to be involved in decalcification of the inner eggshell and mineral transport from the eggshell to the embryo (for mineralization of its skeleton), in acid-base homeostasis, and in ion and H2O reabsorption from the allantoic fluid. To decipher the kinetics of its structural maturation, we compared the structure of the inner and outer surfaces of the CAM by electron microscopy. In parallel, ESM and the eggshell were analyzed to better appreciate the impact of CAM development on its surrounding structures. Eggs from Ross 308 broiler hens were incubated for 11 or 15 days (ED11 vs ED15, early and mature stage of CAM development, respectively). At each time point, eggs were broken, and the eggshell, ESM and the CAM were gently separated for analysis by scanning electron microscopy. Images corresponding to the cross-section and the inner side of the eggshell, eggshell membranes (ESM, outer and inner sides) and CAM (outer and inner sides) were obtained. At ED15, results showed that the inner side of the eggshell is degraded (decalcification) during embryonic development while the mammillary knobs of the eggshell remain tightly attached to the external membrane of the ESM. The CAM also undergoes major structural changes with some villous cells that emerge from its outer surface to reach the eggshell membrane and the eggshell. The molecular components associated with eggshell decalcification and mineral transport from the eggshell to the embryo via CAM’s vasculature remain essentially unknown. This study has been recently complemented by a transcriptomic analysis of the CAM (RNA sequencing) at these two developmental stages. Altogether, we believe that the combined findings of this work will lead to better understanding of CAM functions that are vital for embryonic development and skeletal mineralization during incubation.

Abstract: International audience; Discharging of dust particles in an argon plasma afterglow is investigated using different approaches. First, the dust charge distribution function (DCDF) is obtained by solving numerically the master equation describing dust discharging as a one-step stochastic process. Second, the DCDF is calculated as a Gaussian distribution with mean dust charge and variance, which are functions of time. Additionally, the time-dependencies for the mean dust charge are obtained assuming that the charge changes continuously in the afterglow plasma. Calculation results are compared with available experimental data and are found to be in good qualitative agreement if the dust discharging model accounts for the emission of electrons in the collisions of excited argon atoms with dust particles. This study is carried out taking into account the transition from ambipolar to free diffusion as well as multistep ionization, excitation, and deexcitation of argon atoms in the plasma afterglow.

Abstract: The bacterial Rho factor is a ring-shaped motor triggering genome-wide transcription termination and R-loop dissociation. Rho is essential in many species, including in Mycobacterium tuberculosis where rho gene inactivation leads to rapid death. Yet, the M. tuberculosis Rho [MtbRho] factor displays poor NTPase and helicase activities, and resistance to the natural Rho inhibitor bicyclomycin [BCM] that remain unexplained. To address these issues, we solved the cryo-EM structure of MtbRho at 3.3 Å resolution. The MtbRho hexamer is poised into a pre-catalytic, open-ring state wherein specific contacts stabilize ATP in intersubunit ATPase pockets, thereby explaining the cofactor preference of MtbRho. We reveal a leucine-to-methionine substitution that creates a steric bulk in BCM binding cavities near the positions of ATP γ-phosphates, and confers resistance to BCM at the expense of motor efficiency. Our work contributes to explain the unusual features of MtbRho and provides a framework for future antibiotic development.

Abstract: International audience; The properties of an Ar/C2H2 dusty plasma (neutral, ion and electron densities, effective electron temperature and dust charge) are studied using a volume-averaged model. The steady-state plasma is considered, as well as the case when the dust radius varies with time in the same way as in our experiments. It is analysed how different process conditions (absorbed power, input flux of acetylene, electron energy distribution function and nanoparticle density) affect the plasma properties. The results of our calculations are compared with our experimental results on growth of nanoparticles in an Ar/C2H2 plasma and the results are found to be in a good qualitative agreement.

Abstract: A spatially-averaged model for an argon/dust pulsed plasma is developed in this study [1]. We analyze how the plasma properties depend on the shape of the electron energy probability function (EEPF), the pulsing frequency and the duty cycle. In addition, the case of dust-free plasma is considered. It is found that the results of theory and experiment agree better if the assumed EEPF has a Druyvesteyn shape instead of a Maxwellian one. As an example, we compare electron and metastable atom densities for different plasma states. In particular, the model shows that in the presence of dust and at some pulsing frequencies the electron density decreases rapidly in the very beginning of the on-period. In our opinion, this decrease is due to an enhancement of electron collection by dust particles at the beginning of the on- period. Further, variation in the pulsing frequency differently affects the metastable density in a dust-free and in a dusty plasma. For large pulsing frequencies (≥ 7 kHz), the metastable density in presence of dust is smaller than in the continuous-wave discharge, contrary to the dust-free case. Our model shows that the collection of electrons by dust particles causes the faster variation of the effective electron temperature leading to the lower metastable density. Using a 1D model we describe the plasma properties during the off-period (afterglow) also. The charge of a dust particle and the forces affecting the dust particle are studied for different neutral gas pressures and dust radii. It is found that at long afterglow times, the electric force affects more essentially the dust particle than the ion drag force. These results on dusty pulsed plasmas are relevant to many applications involving nonstationary plasmas containing impurities such as those for synthesis of novel nanomaterials.

Abstract: International audience; Compound specific hydrogen isotopic analyses have the potential to reveal the biosynthetic pathways of biomarkers and to reconstruct the effects of water stress in a plant, or in an ecosystem. Although C4 graminoids are of great geological interest and are some of the world's leading crops, there are few experimental studies of their biomarker responses to hydrological conditions. Here, we study a C4 graminoid, broomcorn millet, and compare the effects of controlled changes in environmental conditions on the distributions of n-alkane homologues and on the pentacyclic triterpene, miliacin, which is a biomarker for broomcorn millet; both were measured in the seeds of the graminoid. Broomcorn millet plants were propagated in hydroponic solutions with four different δ2H values for each of two growth chambers, differing in relative humidity (58 and 74 %). Analyses of δ2H values of the lipid compounds (miliacin and n-alkanes) in seeds and water extracted from transpiring and non-transpiring organs allowed us to quantify the apparent (lipids vs. source water to plant) and biosynthetic (lipids vs. leaf water) fractionations during miliacin and n-alkane syntheses. Miliacin and n-alkane δ2H values were linearly related to leaf water δ2H values, permitting credible biosynthetic fractionations to be calculated for n-alkanes (average -149.5‰ ± 11) and miliacin (-118‰ ± 5). These biosynthetic fractionations were within the range of published values for compounds with their respective biosynthetic pathways, although a 2H-enrichment of miliacin compared to n-alkanes remains unexplained.Whereas a 16% decrease in relative humidity had no significant impact on the biosynthetic fractionation of miliacin, n-C25 and n-C27 alkanes, it led to a ∼25‰ decrease in biosynthetic fractionation for n-C31 and n-C33 alkanes. This could be the consequence of a contribution of more depleted pools of hydrogen atoms in cytoplasmic water (compared to chloroplastic hydrogen pools) during the n-alkyl lipid elongation process. This finding suggests that the respective influences of source water δ2H values and relative humidity on the δ2H values of organic compounds may be discretely inferred by examining the δ2H values of compounds synthesized from distinct sources of hydrogen in cells. It provides clues to the biosynthetic fractionations in a C4 plant for compounds derived from distinct pathways, but also highlights specific issues related to seed lipids that would require further research.

Abstract: The properties (densities of electrons and metastable argon atoms, effective electron temperature and dust charge) of argon/dust and pure argon pulsed plasmas are studied using a spatially-averaged model. The calculated time-dependencies for the densities of electrons and metastable atoms are compared with the experimental measurements and are found to be in a good qualitative agreement. It is analyzed how the plasma properties depend on the shape of the electron energy probability function (EEPF), the pulsing frequency and the duty cycle for both dust-free and dusty plasma. The analysis reveals that the agreement between theory and experiment is better with Druyvesteyn EEPF than the Maxwellian EEPF. Further, the variation in the pulsing frequency νp differently affects the metastable density nm in a dust-free and in a dusty plasma. For large νp, the metastable density in the dust-free pulsed plasma is larger than in the continuous-wave (CW) discharge, while the opposite is obtained in the presence of dust particles. This difference probably arises because of faster variation in the effective electron temperature in the dusty plasma due to collection of electrons by dust particles. Our calculations also show that dust particles may affect the behavior of electron density in the beginning of the on-period due to an enhancement in electron collection by dust particles. Abstract: International audience; This article presents the report of a research carried out during the postdoctoral program, which focused on the peda-gogical practices used for teaching Design for Social Innovation, with the objective of structuring the course of Ecosocial Design, a class to be taught to undergraduate college students majoring in Design in Brazil. To develop the search in this period, it was initiated a reflection on the creation and application of the Postgraduate Program in Design at the School of Fine Arts of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. The research method was based on the combination of the intrinsic and extrinsic aspects of the intermediate objects that are need to the creation of this Program with the ped-agogical instruments developed during its organization, and the potential of these instruments to participate associ-atively in the creation of new Graduate Programs in Brazil. It was determined that the preservation of the autonomy of the knowledge accrued in different contexts, according to the principle of individuation of the Intermediate Objects of Conception, is potentially capable of reducing territorial inequalities by strengthening their associations, and thus performing a coordinating role of associative forms.

Abstract: International audience; This article presents the report of a research carried out during the postdoctoral program, which focused on the peda-gogical practices used for teaching Design for Social Innovation, with the objective of structuring the course of Ecosocial Design, a class to be taught to undergraduate college students majoring in Design in Brazil. To develop the search in this period, it was initiated a reflection on the creation and application of the Postgraduate Program in Design at the School of Fine Arts of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. The research method was based on the combination of the intrinsic and extrinsic aspects of the intermediate objects that are need to the creation of this Program with the ped-agogical instruments developed during its organization, and the potential of these instruments to participate associ-atively in the creation of new Graduate Programs in Brazil. It was determined that the preservation of the autonomy of the knowledge accrued in different contexts, according to the principle of individuation of the Intermediate Objects of Conception, is potentially capable of reducing territorial inequalities by strengthening their associations, and thus performing a coordinating role of associative forms.

Abstract: This is the accepted version of the following article: "Shifted-Chebyshev-polynomial-based numerical algorithm for fractional order polymer visco-elastic rotating beam", which has been published in final form at https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0960077919305429#!; International audience; In this paper, an effective numerical algorithm is proposed for the first time to solve the fractional visco-elastic rotating beam in the time domain. On the basis of fractional derivative Kelvin-Voigt and fractional derivative element con-stitutive models, the two governing equations of fractional visco-elastic rotating beams are established. According to the approximation technique of shifted Chebyshev polynomials, the integer and fractional differential operator matrices of polynomials are derived. By means of the collocation method and matrix technique, the operator matrices of governing equations can be transformed into the algebraic equations. In addition, the convergence analysis is performed. In particular, unlike the existing results, we can get the displacement and the stress numerical solution of the governing equation directly in the time domain. Finally, the sensitivity of the algorithm is verified by numerical examples.

In most species, sex pheromone is produced in, and released from, a specific gland. In a previous study, we used empirical data and compartmental modeling to account for the major pheromone gland processes of female Chloridea virescens: synthesis, storage, catabolism and release; we found that females released little (20–30%) of their pheromone, with most catabolized. The recent publication of a new pheromone collection method led us to reinvestigate pheromone release and catabolism in C. virescens on the basis that our original study might have underestimated release rate (thereby overestimating catabolism) due to methodology and females not calling (releasing) continuously. Further we wished to compare pheromone storage/catabolism between calling and non-calling females. First, we observed calling intermittency of females. Then, using decapitated females, we used the new collection method, along with compartmental modeling, gland sampling and stable isotope labeling, to determine differences in pheromone release, catabolism and storage between (forced) simulated calling and non-calling females. We found, (i) intact 1 d females call intermittently; (ii) pheromone is released at a higher rate than previously determined, with simulations estimating that continuously calling females release ca. 70% of their pheromone (only 30% catabolized); (iii) extension (calling)/retraction of the ovipositor is a highly effective “on/off’ mechanism for release; (iv) both calling and non-calling females store most pheromone on or near the gland surface, but calling females catabolize less pheromone; (v) females are capable of producing and releasing pheromone very rapidly. Thus, not only is the moth pheromone gland efficient, in terms of the proportion of pheromone released Vs. catabolized, but it is highly effective at shutting on/off a high flux of pheromone for release.

Abstract: International audience; This review article discusses the active constituents and potential of two menthol mint oils, Mentha piperita (MPEO) and Mentha arvensis (MAEO), as natural sources for botanical pesticides. The biological activities of these menthol mint oils, which can be useful in agriculture, have been broadly researched, especially toward phytotoxic microorganisms. To a lesser extent, the insecticidal and herbicidal activities of mint EOs have also been studied. It is apparent that the prospect of using menthol mint oils in agriculture is increasing in popularity. A number of investigations showed that the in vitro efficacy of MPEO and MAEO, as well as that of their main constituent, menthol, is pronounced. The results of in vitro research are useful for choosing EOs for further investigations. However, it is clear that in situ experiments are crucial and should be more extensively developed. At the same time, known techniques are to be applied to this area and new methods should be worked out, aiming at the improvement of EOs' pesticidal efficacy and cost-effectiveness, for future implementation in agricultural pest control.

Abstract: We present a digital, freely available, searchable, and evaluated compilation of rate coefficients for the gas-phase reactions of organic compounds with OH, Cl, and NO3 radicals and with O3. Although other compilations of many of these data exist, many are out of date, most have limited scope, and all are difficult to search and to load completely into a digitized form. This compilation uses results of previous reviews, though many recommendations are updated to incorporate new or omitted data or address errors, and includes recommendations on many reactions that have not been reviewed previously. The database, which incorporates over 50 years of measurements, consists of a total of 2765 recommended bimolecular rate coefficients for the reactions of 1357 organic substances with OH, 709 with Cl, 310 with O3, and 389 with NO3, and is much larger than previous compilations. Many compound types are present in this database, including naturally occurring chemicals formed in or emitted to the atmosphere and anthropogenic compounds such as halocarbons and their degradation products. Recommendations are made for rate coefficients at 298 K and, where possible, the temperature dependences over the entire range of the available data. The primary motivation behind this project has been to provide a large and thoroughly evaluated training dataset for the development of structure–activity relationships (SARs), whose reliability depends fundamentally upon the availability of high-quality experimental data. However, there are other potential applications of this work, such as research related to atmospheric lifetimes and fates of organic compounds, or modelling gas-phase reactions of organics in various environments. This is the final version of the article, which has been published in final form at http://www.lestudium-ias.com/content/pleotropism-gonadotropin-action-0; International audience; Evidence exists that the gonadotropins LH and FSH can substitute to each other under certain circumstances, in addition to the fact that they can act together in granulosa cells. The aim of this study is to investigate how the two human gonadotropins influence each other in granulosa cells expressing both receptors, or by co-culturing cells expressing either the LHCGR or the FSHR (as a model granulosa/theca interaction). Plasmids encoding the c-myc-tagged-LHCGR and the FLAG-tagged FSHR under the control of an inducible coumermycin-responsive or doxycycline-responsive promoter, respectively were produced. These plasmids were used to permanently transfect human granulosa cell-derived KGN cells and HEK293 cells. The following cell lines were obtained and partially characterized: #1 c-myc-tagged-LHCGR-KGN; #2 FLAG-tagged FSHR_HEK293; #3 FLAG-tagged FSHR-KGN; #4 Double, c-myc-tagged-LHCGR and FLAG-tagged FSHR-KGN. After induction of receptor expression, the cell lines #1 and #2 and #3 responded to hCG and FSH stimulation, respectively by producing cAMP. Receptor expression was demonstrated by RT-PCR and flow cytometry. The characterization of the cell line #4 is ongoing. These cell lines are now available for the study of cell signaling and steroid synthesis, as well as in silico modeling, to gain insight into the dynamics of the intertwined cell response to FSH and LH in granulosa cells. These experiments will continue in parallel in both laboratories involved. Our cell lines represent new, very valuable instruments for the study of molecular pharmacology of FSH and LH, in order to improve infertility treatment, (multi)follicular growth for assisted reproduction, ovulation and spermatogenesis.

Abstract: International audience; Sensory processes represent an information gathering interface between animals and their surrounding world. Therefore, they serve to scan the environment for resources and threats. The behavior of kissing bugs has been studied to aid their control because they transmit Chagas disease to humans. Besides, a few triatomines represent important insect models since Wigglesworth times. These hematophagous insects rely on different sensory systems to scan their environment for blood-sources, mating partners and hiding places. The study of the molecular bases of sensory processes has undergone a dramatic progress due the advent of new technologies allowing mass-sequencing of genes. Here we focus on reviewing the fundamental knowledge gathered to date about the molecular bases of kissing bug sensory processes.

Abstract: Aim: To assess a program combining virtual reality (VR) games and proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) and to compare it with the standalone techniques in stroke survivors. Methods: A randomized controlled clinical trial. A total of 48 participants were recruited in the outpatient clinic of a University Hospital in Salvador, Brazil. They were randomly assigned to 3 groups (n = 16 each): PNF, VR, and PNF/VR. Participants attended twice-weekly 50-minute sessions over a 2-month period. The PNF/VR group performed both PNF and VR exercises employing Nintendo Wii electronic games. Motor performance was assessed before and immediately after the treatment using the Fugl-Meyer Assessment scale. Results: An improvement in the mean scores was observed after treatment independent of the allocation group with significant intragroup changes: 14.5, 10.5, and 10.4 for PNF, VR, and PNF/VR, respectively. Score changes were also observed in the analyses of specific sections as follows: (1) a significant improvement in the passive movement and pain score was observed in the PNF and PNF/VR groups; (2) the same was observed for the motor function of the upper limb in all groups, for the motor function of the lower limb in the VR group and for balance in the PNF and PNF/VR groups. Conclusions: The use of a program combining virtual rehabilitation and PNF presented results that were comparable with those obtained with the isolated techniques.

Abstract: International audience; In this paper, an efficient numerical technique based on the shifted Chebyshev polynomials (SCPs) is established to obtain numerical solutions of generalized fractional pantograph equations with variable coefficients. These polynomials are orthogonal and have compact support on [0, L]. We use these polynomi-als to approximate the unknown function. Using the properties of the SCPs, we derive the generalized pantograph operational matrix of SCPs and the one of fractional-order differentiation. Then the original problems can be transformed to a system of algebraic equations based on these matrices. By solving these algebraic equations, we can obtain numerical solutions. In addition, we investigate the error analysis and introduce the process of error correction for improving the precision of numerical solutions. Lastly, by giving some examples and comparing with other existing methods, the validity and efficiency of our method is demonstrated.

Abstract: The recycling of lithium ion batteries has been mentioned as one of the near-future waste management necessities. In order for recycling to be economically viable, straightforward and cost effective techniques need to be developed to separate the individual materials in a composite electrode. Ultrasonic separation might be such a technique, provided that lithium ion battery microparticles respond predictably to a sound field. Lithium ion battery cathodes contain hydrophobic carbon. Owing to the incompressibility of a solid, the thin gaseous layer surrounding these hydrophobic particles must oscillate asymmetrically, when subjected to ultrasound. Consequently, the harmonic content of the ultrasound signal radiated from hydrophobic microparticles must be higher than that from hydrophilic microparticles with the same size. The question of whether the harmonic signal response generated by physical hydrophobic microparticles present in lithium ion battery cathodes is higher than the harmonic response of other component materials in the cathode is the focus of this paper. The scattering response of cathode materials subjected to 1-MHz ultrasound was measured and compared. The cathode materials C65, PVDF, and NMC respond differently to 1-MHz ultrasound. The superharmonic response of C65 has been attributed to asymmetric oscillations owing to its hydrophobicity. This work intends to overcome this deficit by providing a broader vision of the problem and by pointing out the need for a renewed analysis and classification of feature definitions based on their originating design context. The work is part of a research project which aims to provide a conceptual framework to unify multiple feature notions and develop feature-based methodologies and applications to support product design. Abstract: International audience; Persistent infection with human papillomavirus (HPV) is responsible for nearly all new cervical cancer cases worldwide. In low-and middle-income countries (LMIC), infection with helminths has been linked to increased HPV prevalence. As the incidence of cervical cancer rises in helminth endemic regions, it is critical to understand the interaction between exposure to helminths and the progression of cervical cancer. Here we make use of several cervical cancer cell lines to demonstrate that exposure to antigens from the hookworm N. brasiliensis significantly reduces cervical cancer cell migration and global expression of vimentin and N-cadherin. Importantly, N. brasiliensis antigen significantly reduced expression of cell-surface vimentin, while decreasing HPV type 16 (HPV16) pseudovirion internalization. In vivo infection with N. brasiliensis significantly reduced vimentin expression within the female genital tract, confirming the relevance of these in vitro findings. Together, these findings demonstrate that infection with the hookworm-like parasite N. brasiliensis can systemically alter genital tract mesenchymal markers in a way that may impair cervical cancer cell progression. These findings reveal a possible late-stage treatment for reducing cervical cancer progression using helminth antigens.

Abstract: This is the accepted version of the following article: An improved pseudo-state estimator for a class of commensurate fractional order linear systems based on fractional order modulating functions, which has been published in final form at https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0167691118301026; International audience; In this paper, a non-asymptotic pseudo-state estimator for a class of commensurate fractional order linear systems is designed in noisy environment. Different from existing modulating functions methods, the proposed method is based on the system model with fractional sequential derivatives by introducing fractional order modulating functions. By applying the fractional order integration by parts formula and thanks to the properties of the fractional order modulating functions, a set of fractional derivatives and fractional order initial values of the output are analogously obtained by algebraic integral formulas. Then, an explicit formula of the pseudo-state is accomplished by using the fractional sequential derivatives of the output computed based on the previous results. This formula does not contain any source of errors in continuous noise-free case, and can be used to non-asymptotically estimate the pseudo-state in discrete noisy case. The construction of the fractional order modulating functions is also shown, which is independent of the time. Finally, simulations and comparison results demonstrate the efficiency and robustness of the proposed method.

The biggest advantage of the fractional Bernstein polynomials is that the order can be changed with the order of the fractional partial differential equations. For the first time, we try to use this method to solve the linear fractional partial differential equations. Secondly, convergence analysis and error correction are also given to make the calculation results more accurate. Abstract: This is the post-print version of the following article: "Characterizing Alterations in the Secondary Structure of Typical Proteins under Exposure to Electromagnetic Fields", which has been published in final form at https://novapublishers.com/shop/advances-in-chemistry-research-volume-42/; International audience; Over the past decades, the growing demand for electric power, electronic devices and radio frequency patterns has induced human beings to use low- and high-frequency electromagnetic fields. Nevertheless, previous research has shown that exposure to electromagnetic fields can induce health effects in living organisms. In particular, several epidemiological studies have reported a correlation between an increased risk of cancer and exposure to extremely lowfrequency electromagnetic fields. Also, in vitro tests have demonstrated that radio frequencies and microwaves emitted by mobile phones and other electronic devices can be carcinogenic and cause DNA damage and chromosome aberrations. In order to investigate accurately the alterations in living things induced by electromagnetic fields, the effects of exposure of typical proteins to low-frequency electromagnetic fields and to microwaves have been studied. Indeed, proteins are fundamental in the organic metabolism of living creatures and it has been clearly demonstrated that several types of environmental stress agents can alter the secondary structure of proteins. To this aim, Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) Spectroscopy was used to investigate the structure of proteins in a water solution, because it may be considered the most versatile spectroscopic technique for analyzing the secondary structure of a protein in various physiochemical environments. In fact, infrared spectroscopy detects transitions between rotational and vibration energy levels, yielding much more information on molecular structure, in particular on proteins. FTIR spectroscopy analysis showed that exposure to electromagnetic fields at intensities below the levels recommended by the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection, alters the secondary structure of typical proteins such as hemoglobin, myoglobin, bovine serum albumin and lysozyme. In particular, it was shown that exposure to electromagnetic fields induces the unfolding of proteins represented by transitions from the α-helix to the β-sheet structure, which may be responsible for the aggregation phenomena. Protein aggregation can lead to neurotoxic and neurodegenerative disorders that are the precursors of some pathologies.

Abstract: This is the accepted version of the following article: "Model-free fractional order differentiator based on fractional order Jacobi orthonormal functions", which has been published in final form at https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1051200417301963; International audience; The aim of this paper is to design an algebraic and robust fractional order differentiator to estimate both the Riemann-Liouville and the Caputo fractional derivatives with an arbitrary order of an unknown signal in noisy environment, without knowing the model defining the signal. For this purpose, a new class of fractional order Jacobi orthonormal functions is firstly introduced. Secondly, the truncated fractional order Jacobi orthonormal series expansion is applied to filter the noisy signal, whose fractional derivative is used to estimate the desired one. Thus, the obtained differentiator is exactly given by an integral formula which depends on a set of design parameters. Thirdly, by applying the generalized Taylor's formula, some error analysis is provided. In particular, error bounds are given, which permit to study the design parameters' influence. Fourthly, a digital fractional order differentiator is deduced in discrete noisy case. Finally, by comparing with two existing fractional order differentiators, numerical results are given to illustrate the accuracy and the robustness of the proposed fractional order differentiator.

Abstract: International audience; Fluorescence optical imaging is a highly sensitive and powerful tool with diverse in vitro and in vivo applications for preclinical and clinical studies. This review is focused on the optical imaging in the near-infrared (NIR) region since improved signal-to-noise ratio and deeper penetration of light through tissues could be achieved due to the minimal autofluorescence and reduced light scattering at these wavelengths. In particular, imaging agents absorbing and emitting in the biological diagnostic window (650–1450 nm) are discussed. The photophysical properties and particularities of chemical structures or compositions of four different families of probes : (i) organic fluorophores, (ii) fluorescent proteins (FPs), (iii) semi-conductor nanocrystals (quantum dots) and (iv) lanthanide(III)-based complexes and nanomaterials are presented. Advantages and drawbacks, commercial availability and toxicity as well as selected applications of these probes are discussed. A specific attention is given to lanthanide(III)-based compounds due to their unique optical properties, e.g. sharp emission bands with minimal sensitivity to the microenvironment, large differences between excitation and emission wavelengths and strong resistance toward photobleaching. The use of such probes brings additional perspectives and facilitates developments of novel strategies in optical imaging including real-time experiments and new approaches for diagnostic.

Abstract: Considered at the beginning of the 21th century as being incompatible with the presence of closely bound high-energy oscillators, lanthanide-centered superexcitation, which is the raising of an already excited electron to an even higher level by excited-state energy absorption, is therefore a very active topic strictly limited to the statistical doping of low-phonon bulk solids and nanoparticles. We show here that molecular lanthanide-containing coordination complexes may be judiciously tuned to overcome these limitations and to induce near-infrared (NIR)-to-visible (VIS)-light upconversion via the successive absorption of two low-energy photons using linear-optical responses. Whereas single-ion-centered excited-state absorption mechanisms remain difficult to implement in lanthanide complexes, the skillful design of intramolecular intermetallic energy-transfer processes operating in multimetallic architectures is at the origin of the recent programming of erbium-centered molecular upconversion.

Abstract: International audience; We consider elliptic operators with complex coefficients and we derive microlocal and local Carleman estimates near a boundary, under sub-ellipticity and strong Lopatinskii conditions. Carleman estimates are weighted {\em a priori} estimates for the solutions of the associated elliptic boundary problem. The weight is of exponential form, $\exp(\tau \varphi)$, where $\tau>0$ is meant to be taken as large as desired. Such estimates have numerous applications in unique continuation, inverse problems, and control theory. Based on inequalities for interior and boundary differential quadratic forms, the proof relies on the microlocal factorization of the symbol of the conjugated operator in connection with the sign of the imaginary part of its roots. We further consider weight functions of the form $\varphi= \exp(\gamma \psi)$, with $\gamma>0$ meant to be taken as large as desired, and we derive Carleman estimates where the dependency upon the two large parameters, $\tau$ and $\lambda$, is made explicit. Applications on unique continuation properties are given.

Abstract: International audience; This paper traces the origins of the different monetary regimes adopted in Bulgaria and Romania in 1996-97 and examines their performance during the EU accession. The findings indicate that the constraints of the currency board in Bulgaria shifted economic activity towards the private sector, while the discretionary policies in Romania turned public finances into both a contributor and a response mechanism to economic imbalances. While the prospects of EU accession initially enhanced the performance of the monetary anchors, the implicit insurance of EU membership increased moral hazard and led to a rapid rise in private and public debt. The paper also explores the historical parallels between the monetary regimes of Bulgaria and Romania in 1996-97 and 1925-1940.

Abstract: International audience; A geochemical model of wellbore cement-caprock-reservoir interfaces is developed. The model predicts the mechanisms of chemical alteration of cement due to interaction with the acid brine obtained after the injection of supercritical CO2 into the reservoir rock. Numerical outputs indicate that, at the well-reservoir interface, intrusion into the cement phase of acid brine accompanied by aqueous CO2 quasi-instantaneously transforms Portlandite and CSH into Calcite and hydrated Si-gel, leading to a slight but moderate porosity decrease, from 28% to similar to 20%. Conversely, at the well-caprock interface, Portlandite first leaches and the Ca2+ ions released from it migrate towards the caprock, where they eventually combine with slowly diffusing aqueous CO2 to form Calcite, up to the porosity collapse of the interface. This can significantly affect the sealing behaviour of the geological storage. We can finally deduce a time-space characterisation of the system enhancing the main chemical mechanisms in view of a future export to a geomechanical model. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract: International audience; We present numerical simulations of isothermal reactive flow which might be induced by fluid migration at the caprock-cement interface of an idealized abandoned well in an area considered for geological sequestration of CO2 in the Paris Basin, France. The calculations are aimed at identifying the mineralogical transformations likely occurring in the cement during the working life and after the closure of the wells present in the area, before the injection of CO2. Field evidence, experimental data, and previous numerical simulations have been used to constrain the initial geochemical conditions and the hydraulic parameters of the model. Significant mineralogical transformations in the cement (portlandite and katoite dissolution, CSH, ettringite, hydrotalcite precipitation), and minor modifications of the initial clayrock mineralogical assemblage (quartz, montmorillonite and illite dissolution, and precipitation of cement-like phases) are predicted at the caprock-cement interface. Associated with these mineralogical transformations, measurable variations in porosity are also computed. Although Portland cement is predicted to retain its integrity at some distance from the interface, calculations confirm the general view that material alteration at the interfaces is of major concern for the minimization of the risks of CO2 leakage from storage zones. Numerical outputs are sensitive with respect to poorly constrained physical and transport parameters, such as the spatial distribution of interconnected porosity in the cement. Different degrees of portlandite dissolution/carbonate precipitation can be predicted during in situ ageing under conditions similar to the Paris Basin, depending on the adopted gridding scheme, i.e. on the conceptualization of the cement as a homogeneous or dual-porosity medium.

Abstract: Based on the co-creation triptyque put forward by the CreActE research programme concerning the setting-up of new activities and employment, we highlight the situation and dynamics of the activity creation of retired people (60 and over). Indeed, the localisation and profile of these post career entrepreneurs are little known and relatively underestimated. Based on a postal survey sent to 3336 retired service creators, and with the help of the RSI (Regime Social des Indépendants) over 8 departments in the Rhône-Alpes and Auvergne regions, we have identified the characteristics of these retired people who create or continue an activity on retirement. Their motivations are examined as well as factors having hindered or helped their activity creation. We also describe two typical portraits of post career entrepreneurs: those of urban origin in urban surroundings and those migrating to the countryside. Both offer economical development opportunities according to the territory concerned., En nous appuyant sur le triptyque de co-création proposé par le programme de recherche CreActE qui s'intéresse à la création d'activitésnouvelles et d'emplois, nous proposons d'éclairer la situation et les dynamiques de création d'activités par les retraités (âgés de 60 ans ouplus). En effet, la localisation et le profil de ces retraités-créateurs sont mal connus et relativement sous-estimés. À partir d'une enquête postale transmise à 3 336 retraités-créateurs de service, grâce au concours du RSI, sur huit départements des régions Rhône-Alpes et Auvergne, nous identifions les caractéristiques de ces retraités qui créent ou reprennent une activité à leur retraite, les motivations qui les poussent à créer, ainsi que les facteurs ayant freiné ou favorisé leur création. Abstract: International audience; Depuis deux décennies, l’attractivité du monde rural ne se dément pas. Les retraités représentent le quart des migrants s’installant dans l’espace rural1. Participant au vieillissement des campagnes, ces retraités induisent une demande de services qualifiés de services à la personne. Entre 1994 et 2004, le nombre de salariés du secteur des services à la personne (parmi lesquels figurent les services d’aide aux personnes âgées) a presque doublé2. Le dynamisme du secteur n’est pas prêt de faiblir avec la montée en puissance de l’aide à domicile pour des personnes âgées de plus en plus nombreuses (1 à 2 millions de personnes de plus de 85 ans dans le monde rural d’ici 2015). Cependant, le développement de ces services s’opère difficilement dans un univers complexe encore largement dominé par le secteur public. Le potentiel de création d’activités de services est pourtant considérable, pour le secteur privé notamment. Cet article se propose de dresser un panorama des activités de services à la personne à destination des retraités résidant en milieu rural. Sur la base de l’analyse de deux territoires d’Auvergne (le Pays des Combrailles et la Communauté de communes de Billom-Saint-Dier), nous avons pu observer deux logiques à l’œuvre, l’une providentielle, l’autre concurrentielle, selon le statut, public ou privé, du créateur de l’activité de services.

Abstract: The proportion of retired people in the French and European population is growing and rural regions are ageing. We show that retired people can be both users and participants in the service society. This represents a real opportunity for development and for the creation of activities in the sector. Thus, people setting up service activities are within a multi-scale and evolving territory, where help organisations and local characteristics have a determining role to play. Based on the principle of jointly created activities, recognised in the research programme Pour et Sur le Développement Régional (PSDR), For and On Regional Development “Création d’Activités nouvelles et d’Emploi” (CreActE), “creation of new activities and jobs”, and including three poles : creators, help structures and territory on which to set up activities. We offer a territorialisation of the triangle of services resulting from service economics. We then confront the encouraging theoretical conclusions with the reality of three pieces of rural land in the Auvergne. It appears to us that lack of information, tepid conviction of local actors and the complexity of organising the service sector make it difficult, both effectively and objectively, to account for, not only medicosocial needs, but all needs related to population ageing., a part des retraités dans la population française et européenne est croissante, et l’espace rural vieillit. Nous montrons que, en milieu rural, les retraités peuvent être à la fois des usagers et des acteurs à part entière de la société de services, constituant ainsi une véritable opportunité de développement et de création d’activités dans ce secteur. Le créateur d’activités de service s’inscrit en effet dans un territoire multiscalaire et évolutif, dans lequel les organismes d’accompagnement et les caractéristiques du territoire ont des rôles déterminants. En nous basant sur le postulat de co-création d’activités, identifié dans le cadre du programme de recherche Pour et Sur le Développement Régional (PSDR), « Création d’Activités nouvelles et d’Emploi » (CreActE), faisant intervenir trois pôles : un créateur, des structures d’accompagnement et le territoire d’implantation de l’activité, nous proposons une territorialisation du triangle des services issu de l’économie des services. Puis, confrontant les conclusions théoriques encourageantes à la réalité de trois terrains ruraux auvergnats, il nous apparaît alors que le manque d’information, la faible conviction des acteurs locaux, et la complexité de l’organisation du secteur des services rendent difficile et singulière la prise en compte effective et objective de l’ensemble des besoins (non uniquement médico-sociaux) liés au vieillissement de la population.

Abstract: International audience; We examined some 75 observations from the low-altitude Earth orbiting DMSP, Ørsted and CHAMP satellites which were taken in the region of the nominal cusp. Our objective was to determine whether the actually observed cusp locations as inferred from magnetosheath-like particle precipitation (“particle cusp”) and intense small-scale magnetic field variations (“current cusp”), respectively, were identical and were consistent with the statistically expected latitude of the cusp derived from a huge number of charged particle spectrograms (“statistical cusp”).The geocentric coordinates of the satellites were converted into AACGM coordinates, and the geomagnetic latitude of the cusp boundaries (as indicated by precipitating particles and small-scale field-aligned currents) set in relation to the IMF-Bz dependent latitude of the equatorward boundary of the statistical cusp.We find that the actually observed latitude of the particle cusp matches well the statistically expected latitude while the current cusp appears to cover most of the statistical cusp and also a ≈1° wide section beyond the equatorward boundary of the statistical cusp. This leads us to suggest that intense small-scale field-aligned currents are generated in the cusp but also in the transition zone between the low-latitude boundary layer (LLBL) and the cusp, probably within both regimes, the cusp and the open LLBL. The small-scale field-aligned currents are possibly a consequence of turbulence and/or instabilities associated with the process of opening previously closed magnetospheric field lines and merging them with the interplanetary magnetic field.
