The premise of the Internet of Things (IoT) is to interconnect not only sensors, mobile devices, and computers but also individuals, homes, smart buildings, and cities, as well as electrical grids, automobiles, and airplanes, to mention a few. However, realizing the extensive connectivity of IoT while ensuring user security and privacy still remains a challenge. There are many unconventional characteristics in IoT systems such as scalability, heterogeneity, mobility, and limited resources, which render existing Internet security solutions inadequate to IoT-based systems. Besides, the IoT advocates for peer-to-peer networks where users as owners intend to set security policies to control their devices or services instead of relying on some centralized third parties. By focusing on scientific challenges related to the IoT unconventional characteristics and user-centric security, we propose an IoT secure infrastructure enabled by the blockchain technology and driven by trustless peer-to-peer networks. Our IoT secure infrastructure allows not only the identification of individuals and collectives but also the trusted identification of IoT things through their owners by referring to the blockchain in trustless peer-to-peer networks. The blockchain provides our IoT secure infrastructure with a trustless, immutable and public ledger that records individuals and collectives identities, which facilitates the design of the simplified authentication protocol for IoT without relying on third-party identity providers. Besides, our IoT secure infrastructure adopts socialized IoT paradigm which allows all IoT entities (namely, individuals, collectives, things) to establish relationships and makes the IoT extensible and ubiquitous networks where owners can take advantage of relationships to set access policies for their devices or services. Furthermore, in order to protect operations of our IoT secure infrastructure against security threats, we also introduce an autonomic threat detection mechanism as the complementary of our access control framework, which can continuously monitor anomaly behavior of device or service operations.; Le principe de l'Internet des objets (IdO) est d'interconnecter non seulement les capteurs, les appareils mobiles et les ordinateurs, mais aussi les particuliers, les maisons, les bâtiments intelligents et les villes, ainsi que les réseaux électriques, les automobiles et les avions, pour n'en citer que quelques-uns. A Peer-to-Peer (P2P) platform is considered for collaborative Information Retrieval (IR). Each peer hosts a collection of text documents with subjects related to its owner's interests. Without a global indexing mechanism, peers locally index their documents, and provide the service to answer queries. A decentralized protocol is designed, enabling the peers to collaboratively forward queries from the initiator to the peers with relevant documents. Semantic Overlay Network (SONs) is one the state of the art solutions, where peers with semantically similar resources are clustered. IR is efficiently performed by forwarding queries to the relevant peer clusters in an informed way. SONs are built and maintained mainly via peer rewiring. Specifically, each peer periodically sends walkers to its neighborhood. The walkers walk along peer connections, aiming at discovering more similar peers to replace less similar neighbors of its initiator. The P2P network then gradually evolves from a random overlay network to a SON. Random and greedy walk can be applied individually or integrated in peer rewiring as a constant strategy during the progress of network evolution. However, the evolution of the network topology may affect their performance. For example, when peers are randomly connected with each other, random walk performs better than greedy walk for exploring similar peers. But as peer clusters gradually emerge in the network, a walker can explore more similar peers by following a greedy strategy. This thesis proposes an evolving walking strategy based on Simulated Annealing (SA), which evolves from a random walk to a greedy walk along the progress of network evolution. According to the simulation results, SA-based strategy outperforms current approaches, both in the efficiency to build a SON and the effectiveness of the subsequent IR. This thesis contains several advancements with respect to the state of the art in this field. First of all, we identify a generic peer rewiring pattern and formalize it as a three-step procedure. Our technique provides a consistent framework for peer rewiring, while allowing enough flexibility for the users/designers to specify its properties. Secondly, we formalize SON construction as a combinatorial optimization problem, with peer rewiring as its decentralized local search solution. Based on this model, we propose a novel SA-based approach to peer rewiring. Our approach is validated via an extensive experimental study on the effect of network wiring on (1) SON building and (2) IR in SONs., Nous considérons une plate-forme pair-à-pair pour la Recherche d'Information (RI) collaborative. Chaque pair héberge une collection de documents textuels qui traitent de ses sujets d'intérêt. En l'absence d'un mécanisme d'indexation global, les pairs indexent localement leurs documents et s'associent pour fournir un service distribué de réponse à des requêtes. Notre objectif est de concevoir un protocole décentralisé qui permette aux pairs de collaborer afin de transmettre une requête depuis son émetteur jusqu'aux pairs en possession de documents pertinents. Les réseaux logiques sémantiques (Semantic Overlay Networks, SON) représentent la solution de référence de l'état de l'art. Les pairs qui possèdent des ressources sémantiques similaires sont regroupés en clusters. Les opérations de RI seront alors efficaces puisqu'une requête sera transmise aux clusters de pairs qui hébergent les ressources pertinentes. La plupart des approches actuelles consistent en une reconfiguration dynamique du réseau de pairs (peer rewiring). Pour ce faire, chaque pair exécute périodiquement un algorithme de marche aléatoire ou gloutonne sur le réseau pair-à-pair afin de renouveler les pairs de son cluster. Ainsi, un réseau à la structure initialement aléatoire évolue progressivement vers un réseau logique sémantique. Jusqu'à présent, les approches existantes n'ont pas considéré que l'évolution de la topologie du réseau puisse influer sur les performances de l'algorithme de reconfiguration dynamique du réseau. Cependant, s'il est vrai que, pour une configuration initiale aléatoire des pairs, une marche aléatoire sera efficace pour découvrir les pairs similaires, lorsque des clusters commencent à émerger une approche gloutonne devient alors mieux adaptée. Ainsi, nous proposons une stratégie qui applique un algorithme de recuit simulé (Simulated Annealing, SA) afin de faire évoluer une stratégie de marche aléatoire vers une stratégie gloutonne lors de la construction du SON. Cette thèse contient plusieurs avancées concernant l'état de l'art dans ce domaine. D'abbord, nous modélisions formellement la reconfiguration dynamique d'un réseau en un SON. Nous identifions un schéma générique pour la reconfiguration d'un réseau pair-à-pair, et après le formalisons en une procédure constituée de trois étapes. Ce framework cohérent offre à ses utilisateurs de quoi le paramétrer. Ensuite, le problème de la construction d'un SON est modélisé sous la forme d'un problème d'optimisation combinatoire pour lequel les opérations de reconfiguration du réseau correspondent à la recherche décentralisée d'une solution locale. Fondée sur ce modèle, une solution concrète à base de recuit simulé est proposée. Nous menons une étude expérimentale poussée sur la construction du SON et la RI sur SONs, et validions notre approche.

Simulation has been the most widely used approach for performance evaluation of peer-to-peer applications because it represents a fast and inexpensive way to test novel solutions. Nonetheless, the growing complexity and heterogeneity of the emerging scenario for peer-to-peer applications has made it necessary to validate models and simulation results through experimental evaluation in realistic settings. Performing an experimental evaluation of distributed applications on a large scale, however, is still a challenging task. Firstly, it requires resources which should be made available to the community of researchers through a cooperative effort of institutions. Secondly, but not least important, it should be conducted with a sound methodology and produce results that could be analysed and reused by the whole community of researchers. Our call for papers explicitly asked for contributions illustrating either experiences in conducting real-world experimental analysis of peer-to-peer applications or innovative methodologies that could be useful for assessing such applications with respect to non-functional requirements, such as performance, scalability, fault tolerance, availability and security. This editorial presents the main contributions provided by the six papers that we present in this special issue on.

We study a new approach for decentralized data storage in peer-to-peer networks. In this approach,the responsibility of data management is transferred from the peers to the documents. It means thatdocuments are not passive data sets anymore but become autonomous and responsible for their owndurability. Thanks to a multi-agent system modeling and bio-inspired algorithms, we transform eachdocument into a mobile agents flock able to move into the network. Firstly, we assess the feasibility ofthis approach with several experiments done on a prototype deployed in a real peer-to-peer network.We note that, given some hypothesis, our motion algorithms are sound. We also note that, topologicalrelationships between the agents are enough for the emergence of a global flocking behavior. Secondly,we focus on mechanisms required to ensure flocks durability. We note that those flocks are self -adaptiveand that, this property can be used to find the accurate fragmentation parameters, given a networkinstance and a required level of availability. Finaly, we study this self-adaptation property in the contextof correlated failures. We propose and we analyze a decentralized flock placement algorithm aimed atreducing the correlated failures impact on data storage systems.; Nous étudions une nouvelle approche pour le stockage décentralisé dans les réseaux pair-à-pair, qui consiste à transférer la responsabilité du stockage des données, des pairs aux documents eux-mêmes. Les documents ne sont plus des ensembles de données inertes sur lesquels sont appliqués des traitements. Ils deviennent autonomes et responsables de leur propre durabilité. À l'aide d'une modélisation sous la forme d'un système multi-agents mobiles et d'algorithmes bio-inspirés, nous transformons chaque document en une nuée d'agents mobiles, capable de se déplacer dans le réseau. Nous nous intéressons, dans un premier temps, à la faisabilité de cette approche, que nous évaluons au moyen de plusieurs expériences, réalisées sur un prototype déployé dans un réseau pair-à-pair réel. Nous constatons, sous certaines hypothèses, que nos algorithmes de déplacement en nuées sont valides et que les relations topologiques entre agents sont suffisantes pour faire émerger le comportement global de flocking. Dans un second temps, nous nous intéressons aux mécanismes permettant d'assurer la durabilité de ces nuées en présence de fautes. Ces nuées présentent des capacités d'auto-adaptation, qui leur permettent notamment de trouver le schéma de fragmentation adéquat, pour l'instance de réseau considérée et pour le niveau de disponibilité requis. Nous étudions plus en détail cette capacité d'adaptation dans le contexte des fautes corrélées, en proposant et en évaluant un algorithme de placement décentralisé qui permet de réduire l'impact des fautes corrélées sur les systèmes de stockage décentralisés.

International audience; Content management appears as an essential requirement in order to deploy enhanced P2P networks. In P2P networks, the content that is requested by the query node could be located at different locations/nodes; therefore an efficient search mechanism is required. The proposed search algorithm in this paper, called socP2P, relies on peers' social relationships (friendships, shared interests, shared background and experiences) to improve the content discovery compared to similar solutions. With socP2P nodes can improve searches by using knowledge gained by 'overheard information' during their stay in the network. In addition, our algorithm exploits peers' common interests, friendships, and capability of memorizing experiences (received and routed queries) by them. Simulation results show that socP2P is able to achieve a high success rate, low delay and low overhead. We have verified that our algorithm is not only useful in finding popular contents in the network but also good enough to locate rare files. The obtained results reflect that exploiting social information in P2P networks leads to a more efficient content search mechanism.

International audience; Voice over IP services have undergone a large-scale deployment thanks to the development of high-speed broadband access and the standardization of dedicated signaling protocols. They offer new opportunities, in particular in the context of peer-to-peer networks. However they are exposed to multiple security attacks due to a lower confinement in comparison to traditional networks. Protection mechanisms are available, but may significantly impact the service performance. We propose in this paper a risk management strategy for dynamically adapting the exposure of P2PSIP networks. We describe the underlying mechanisms for mitigating risks based on a portfolio of countermeasures. We also detail the mathematical modeling which supports our solution based on the analysis of a case study. Finally we quantify the benefits and limits of this approach through an extensive set of experiments performed with the OMNET++ simulator.

International audience; File‐sharing is often depicted as detrimental to traditional commercial activities and tends to dissuade official digital goods' producers from innovating. Meanwhile, evidence shows that producers are likely to provide complementary hardware goods that are compatible with digital goods available both offline and online. This article investigates to what extent the introduction of peer‐to‐peer networks has a positive impact on the level of profits reached by producers. Our model shows that the file‐sharing activity does not crowd the official digital goods producers and hardware goods producers out of the market. Moreover, we find that there exists suitable qualitybased strategies so that both types of producers benefit from the file‐sharing activity. The utility that peer‐to‐peer networks provide to file‐sharers has to be considered cautiously for commercial firms to gain positive outcomes from the file‐sharing activity.

We consider Kleinberg's celebrated small-world model (2000). This model is based on a d-dimensional grid graph of n nodes, augmented by a constant number of ''long-range links'' per node. It is known that this graph has diameter Θ(log n), and that a simple greedy search algorithm visits an expected number of O(log^2 n) nodes, which is asymptotically optimal over all decentralized search algorithms. Besides the number of nodes visited, a relevant measure is the length of the path constructed by the search algorithm. A decentralized algorithm by Lebhar and Schabanel (2003) constructs paths of expected length O(log n * (loglog n)^2) by visiting the same number of nodes as greedy search. A natural question, posed by Kleinberg (2006), is whether there are decentralized algorithms that construct paths of length O(log n) while visiting only a poly-logarithmic number of nodes. In this paper we resolve this question. For grid dimension d=1, we answer the question in the negative, by showing that any decentralized algorithm that visits a poly-logarithmic number of nodes constructs paths of expected length Ω(log n * loglog n). Further we show that this bound is tight; a simple variant of the algorithm by Lebhar and Schabanel matches this bound. For dimension d ≥ 2, however, we answer the question in the affirmative; the bound is achieved by essentially the same algorithm we used for d=1. This is the first time that such a dichotomy, based on the dimension d, has been observed for an aspect of this model. Our results may be applicable to the design of peer-to-peer networks, where the length of the path along which data are transferred is critical for the network's performance., Dans cet article, nous apporterons une réponse exacte (asymptotiquement) et surprenante à une question ouverte depuis plusieurs années dans le domaine de la modélisation des comportements sociaux: est-il possible de naviguer dans un graphe petit-monde de Kleinberg en temps optimal ? C'est-à-dire, est-il possible de suivre un chemin optimal d'un point à un autre en utilisant seulement les informations disponibles localement. Cette question a clairement des applications dans le design de tables de routage et de protocoles pair-à-pair. La réponse que nous apportons est la suivante: si la dimension sous-jacente du graphe petit-monde est 1, la réponse est non, les chemins optimaux sont de longueur Θ(log n) alors que le mieux que l'on puisse faire à partir des informations locales est Θ(log n * loglog n); lorsque la dimension sous-jacente est ≥ 2, on démontre qu'un simple algorithme de parcours en largeur réussit à naviguer optimalement.

This article presents P4Q, a fully decentralized gossip-based protocol to personalize query processing in social tagging systems. P4Q dynamically associates each user with social acquaintances sharing similar tagging behaviors. Queries are gossiped among such acquaintances, computed on-the-fly in a collaborative, yet partitioned manner, and results are iteratively refined and returned to the querier. Analytical and experimental evaluations convey the scalability of P4Q for top- k query processing, as well its inherent ability to cope with users updating profiles and departing.

This thesis addresses the issue of information management in peer-to-peer networks. The goal of our approach is to provide mechanisms for investment and research of dynamic information, intelligent, robust, and completely decentralized. We propose a layered architecture composed of a peer-to-peer network responsible for the decentralization of service, inherited from information theory to ensure the availability and security of data applications, and mobile agents carrying information. We propose an algorithm based on the movement of the moving cloud birds to place the information in a network. We associate with each moving agent a deposit pheromones allowing a distribution of effective management, and establishing a measure of trust in peer network. We enhance this model by proposing two agents search data. The first follows a random walk agent also called Markov chain. The second agent moves randomly and uses his ability to interact with the environment by depositing pheromones to mark peers already traveled. Finally, we present an application deployed on a physical network for observing the behavior of our agents and validation of our algorithms application.; Cette thèse aborde la problématique de la gestion de l'information dans les réseaux pair-à-pair. L'objectif de notre approche est de fournir des mécanismes de placement et de recherche de l'information dynamiques, intelligents, robustes, et totalement décentralisés.Nous proposons une architecture en couches composée d'un réseau pair-à-pair responsable de la décentralisation du service, d'applications héritées de la théorie de l'information pour assurer la disponibilité et la sûreté des données, et d'agents mobiles transportant l'information. Nous proposons un algorithme reposant sur le déplacement en nuée des oiseaux pour placer l'information dans un réseau. Nous associons à chaque déplacement d'agent un dépôt de phéromones permettant une répartition de charge efficace, et l'établissement d'une mesure de confiance envers les pairs du réseau. Nous enrichissons ce modèle en proposant deux agents de recherche de données. Le premier agent suit une marche aléatoire également appelée chaîne de Markov. Le second agent se déplace aléatoirement et utilise ses capacités d'interaction avec l'environnement en déposant des phéromones pour marquer les pairs déjà parcourus. Enfin, nous présentons une application déployée sur un réseau physique permettant l'observation du comportement de nos agents et la validation de nos algorithmes.

This thesis addresses the issue of information management in peer-to-peer networks. The goal of our approach is to provide mechanisms for investment and research of dynamic information, intelligent, robust, and completely decentralized. We propose a layered architecture composed of a peer-to-peer network responsible for the decentralization of service, inherited from information theory to ensure the availability and security of data applications, and mobile agents carrying information. We propose an algorithm based on the movement of the moving cloud birds to place the information in a network. We associate with each moving agent a deposit pheromones allowing a distribution of effective management, and establishing a measure of trust in peer network. We enhance this model by proposing two agents search data. The first follows a random walk agent also called Markov chain. The second agent moves randomly and uses his ability to interact with the environment by depositing pheromones to mark peers already traveled. Finally, we present an application deployed on a physical network for observing the behavior of our agents and validation of our algorithms application., Cette thèse aborde la problématique de la gestion de l'information dans les réseaux pair-à-pair. L'objectif de notre approche est de fournir des mécanismes de placement et de recherche de l'information dynamiques, intelligents, robustes, et totalement décentralisés.Nous proposons une architecture en couches composée d'un réseau pair-à-pair responsable de la décentralisation du service, d'applications héritées de la théorie de l'information pour assurer la disponibilité et la sûreté des données, et d'agents mobiles transportant l'information. Nous proposons un algorithme reposant sur le déplacement en nuée des oiseaux pour placer l'information dans un réseau. Nous associons à chaque déplacement d'agent un dépôt de phéromones permettant une répartition de charge efficace, et l'établissement d'une mesure de confiance envers les pairs du réseau. Nous enrichissons ce modèle en proposant deux agents de recherche de données. Le premier agent suit une marche aléatoire également appelée chaîne de Markov. Le second agent se déplace aléatoirement et utilise ses capacités d'interaction avec l'environnement en déposant des phéromones pour marquer les pairs déjà parcourus. Enfin, nous présentons une application déployée sur un réseau physique permettant l'observation du comportement de nos agents et la validation de nos algorithmes.

International audience; We study a peer-to-peer backup system, where users offer some of their storage space to provide service for the others. The economic model for such a system is different from the ones applicable to peer-to-peer file sharing systems, since the storage capacity is a private good here. We study two mechanisms aimed at incentivizing users to offer some of their capacity: a price-based scheme (here a revenue-driven monopoly) and a more classical symmetric scheme (imposing users to contribute to the service at least as much as use it). We compare the outcomes of such mechanisms to the socially optimal situation that could be attained if users were not selfish, and show that depending on user heterogeneity, a revenue maximizing monopoly can be a worse or a better (in terms of social welfare) way to manage the system than a symmetric scheme.
