Abstract: International audience; 'BayLum' is an R-package that facilitates the application of Bayesian models to the field of OSL dating. Here we present two recent feature updates to 'BayLum', significantly reducing computation time and improving general use. The first feature allows users to parallelize the computations involved in the MCMC sampling of values, while the second introduces the ability to extend a 'BayLum' model, which has run to completion without converging. All updates are automatically available with 'BayLum' v0.3.1.

Abstract: International audience; The Palaeolithic site of La Ferrassie (SW France) has been extensively studied since its discovery during the 19th century. In addition to a large sequence including Middle and Upper Paleolithic layers, the site has yielded two very complete adult Neanderthal skeletons, five partial immature Neanderthal skeletons as well as a few isolated human remains. Currently, much of the site sequence has been dated by radiocarbon and OSL but the dating of the human skeletal remains is still a matter of debate. Here, we present the OSL dating of a still consolidated sediment sample associated with the Neanderthal skeleton La Ferrassie 1 (LF1), unearthed by Peyrony and Capitan in 1909 and preserved at the Musée de l’Homme (Paris, France). This block of sediment is crucial as it constitutes the first possibility to date a sample in close association with the specimen. This sample is included in a chronological model at the scale of the site, with the aim to estimate the ages of three Neanderthal individuals: La Ferrassie 1, 2 and 8 (LF1, LF2 and LF8). Two chronological modelling tools (OxCal and BayLum/ArchaeoPhases) are first applied to previously published radiocarbon ages and compared. Chronological inferences show that the BayLum/ArchaeoPhases model provides posterior probability densities, or statistical inferences, that are more consistent with the measured data. Abstract: This paper proposes a Bayesian analysis using an extension of g-priors for moderated mediation models. For this choice of priors, an explicit form of the marginal distribution is obtained. Testing procedure on the existence of direct, indirect and moderated effects are constructed using Bayes factor approach. This methodology is applied to analyze the association between empowering lead- ership and organisational commitment in two companies.

Abstract: This article focuses on the estimation of the stability index and scale parameter of stable random variables. While there is a sizable literature on this topic, no precise theoretical results seem available. We study an estimator based on log-moments, which always exist for such random variables. The main advantage of this estimator is that it has a simple closed form expression. This allows us to prove an almost sure convergence result as well as a central limit theorem. We show how to improve the accuracy of this estimator by combining it with previously defined ones. The closed form also enables us to consider the case of non identically distributed data, and we show that our results still hold provided deviations from stationarity are ”small”. Using a centro-symmetrization, we expand the previous estimators to skewed stable variables and we construct a test to check the skewness of the data. As applications, we show numerically that the stability index of multistable Lévy motion may be estimated accurately and consider a financial log, namely the S&P 500, where we find that the stability index evolves in time in a way that reflects with major financial events.

Abstract: This paper develops a new global optimisation method that applies to a family of criteria that are not entirely known. This family includes the criteria obtained from the class of posteriors that have nor-malising constants that are analytically not tractable. The procedure applies to posterior probability densities that are continuously differen-tiable with respect to their parameters. The proposed approach avoids the re-sampling needed for the classical Monte Carlo maximum likelihood inference, while providing the missing convergence properties of the ABC based methods. Results on simulated data and real data are presented. The real data application fits an inhomogeneous area interaction point process to cosmological data. The obtained results validate two important aspects of the galaxies distribution in our Universe : proximity of the galaxies from the cosmic filament network together with territorial clustering at given range of interactions. Finally, conclusions and perspectives are depicted.

Abstract: Distinguishing long memory behaviour from nonstationarity can be very difficult as in both cases the sample autocovariance function decays very slowly. Available stationarity tests either do not include long memory or fare poorly in terms of empirical size, especially near the boundary between long memory and nonstationarity. We propose a parameter- free decision rule, that is based on evaluating periodograms at different epochs. We establish some asymptotic theorems in order to validate the method. Limiting distribu- tions are easily tractable as sum of weighted independent χ2 random variables. Moreover, numerical studies are provided to show that the proposed approach outperforms existing methods. We also apply our method to a well-known empirical data, often cited as an example of confusion between long memory and nonstationarity.

Abstract: In human sciences, mediation designates a particular causal phenomenon where the effect of a variable X on another variable Y passes (par-tially or entirely) through a third variable M. The parameters of interest in mediation models are the direct effect of X on Y and the indirect effect of X on Y through M. We use a Bayesian framework to estimate these parameters and we compare different construction of prior distribution. The results show that providing information improves the quality of the estimation. We also propose a Bayesian procedure to test the absence of direct and indirect effect. Results of simulations show that this procedure works as well as the usual frequentist test for the direct effect and better than the usual bootstrapping test for the indirect effect. Finally, we apply our approach to real data from a longitudinal study on the well-being of children in school.

Abstract: International audience; Synopsis Acquisition time is a major limitation in recovering brain white matter microstructure with diffusion magnetic resonance imaging. Finding a sampling scheme that maximizes signal quality and satisfies given time constraints is NP-hard. Therefore, we propose a heuristic method based on genetic algorithm that finds sub-optimal solutions in reasonable time. Our diffusion model is defined in the qτ-space, so that it captures both spacial and temporal phenomena. The experiments on synthetic data and in-vivo diffusion images of the C57Bl6 wild-type mouse corpus callosum reveal superiority of our approach over random sampling and even distribution in the qτ-space. Introduction Brain white matter (WM) microstructure recovery with diffusion Magnetic Resonance Imaging (dMRI) requires lengthy acquisition which is unattainable in clinical practice. Dense scanning schemes studied by researchers [1-5] typically take few hours of imaging time, whereas human subjects can tolerate a little more than one hour [6, 7]. Nonetheless, recent in vivo studies of the WM microstructure [7-9] call for more fine-grained investigation of both space-and time-dependent diffusion. In this work, we aim at bridging the gap between growing demands on spatio-temporal (qτ) probing of dMRI signal [10] and acquisition time limitations. To this end, we propose an acquisition design that reduces the number of samples under adjustable quality loss. Most of the current acquisition schemes assume the fixed τ case, focusing on a dense sampling of the q-space instead [3-5]. However, a pronounced time-dependence in dMRI was recently reported by De Santis et al. [9], Burcaw et al. [11], and Novikov et al. [12]. Their results incline towards paying more attention to temporal phenomena in dMRI signal by incorporating multiple τ variants into acquisition schemes. Methods The main goal of our study is to find a qτ-indexed sampling scheme that best preserves the dMRI signal while satisfying given acquisition time limits [10,13]. We formulate the acquisition design task as an optimization problem. Furthermore, we want our approach to be applicable for real data. To this end, we discretize the spatio-temporal search space by performing a state-of-the-art dense pre-acquisition of dMRI signal. The problem thus boils down to selecting an optimal subset of Diffusion Weighted Images (DWIs), which is NP-hard [13]. Taking into account that the time complexity of our problem grows exponentially with the size of domain, such that global optima cannot be found deterministically within few hours or even few days, we apply a stochastic search engine instead. We use Standard Genetic Algorithm (SGA) [14] for this purpose due to its fast convergence rate, ability to avoid local optima, and the fact that it is based on the mathematically profound Markov Chain model [15]. Experiments For evaluation of our approach, we used both synthetic diffusion data and in vivo dMRI images of the C57Bl6 wild-type mouse. The dense pre-acquisition of signals covered 40 shells, each of which comprised 20 directions and one b 0-image, i.e. 40 × 20 = 800 DWIs plus 40 non-weighted images. We used combinations of 5 separation times Δ ∈ {10.8, 13.1, 15.4, 17.7, 20.0} [ms] and 8 gradient strengths G ∈ {50, 100, 150, 200, 250, 300, 350, 400} [mT/m]. The gradient duration δ = 5 ms remained constant throughout the experiments. We considered four variants of time limits expressed as budget sizes n max = {100, 200, 300, 400} out of 800 DWIs. We compared our method with two alternative sampling schemes. One of them, called random, used the uniform random distribution of qτ samples in the index space {1, …, N}. In the second one, referred to as even, we picked each i-th sample for i = ⌊kN / n max ⌋ and k = 1,. .. , n max. Discussion As Figure 1 shows, our method outperformed the other two in all analyzed cases, assuring lowest mean squared errors (MSEs) and standard deviations (STDs). Abstract: International audience; We propose a robust event date model to estimate the date of a target event by a combination of individual dates obtained from archaeological artifacts assumed to be contemporaneous. These dates are affected by errors of different types: laboratory and calibration curve errors, irreducible errors related to contaminations, and tapho-nomic disturbances, hence the possible presence of outliers. Modeling based on a hierarchical Bayesian statistical approach provides a simple way to automatically penalize outlying data without having to remove them from the dataset. Prior information on individual irreducible errors is introduced using a uniform shrinkage density with minimal assumptions about Bayesian parameters. We show that the event date model is more robust than models implemented in BCal or OxCal, although it generally yields less precise credibility intervals. The model is extended in the case of stratigraphic sequences that involve several events with temporal order constraints (relative dating), or with duration, hiatus constraints. Calculations are based on Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) numerical techniques and can be performed using ChronoModel software which is freeware, open source and cross-platform. Features of the software are presented in Vibet et al. (ChronoModel v1.5 user's manual, 2016). We finally compare our prior on event dates implemented in the ChronoModel with the prior in BCal and OxCal which involves supplementary parameters defined as boundaries to phases or sequences.

Abstract: International audience; Synopsis We study the sensitivity of time-dependent diffusion MRI indices or qτ-indices to demyelination in the mouse brain. For this, we acquire in vivo four-dimentional diffusion-weighted images-varying over gradient strength, direction and diffusion time-and estimate the qτ-indices from the corpus callosum. First order Taylor approximation of each index gives fitting coefficients α and β whose variance we investigate. Results indicate that, cuprizone intoxication affects mainly index coefficient β by introducing inequality of variances between the two mice groups, most significantly in the splenium and that MSD increases and RTOP decreases over diffusion time τ.

Abstract: We propose new statistical tools to analyze and to estimate archeological phases from the posterior distribution of a sequence of dates. All the functions are implemented in the R package ArchaeoPhases. The required inputs are simulated samples from the posterior distribution of the dates. Such Markov Chains Monte Carlo samples are provided, for instance, by ChronoModel or Oxcal, two softwares build for the chronological modeling of archeological dates. We give a practical introduction to the package ArchaeoPhases using published data and comment the statistical results.

Abstract: Our communication concerns the analysis of the space archipelique peculiar to the collective Estann, (www.annephilippe.fr) whose interdisciplinary works are situated between architecture, arts and between cinema. This space archipelique artistic widely echos the archipelique thought deployed by Edouard Glissant, as one invites to approach the cinema and the architecture when they communicate by " their edge ". In doing so, their aims are transformed: it is not any more a question of building worlds, but of committing the spectator-user to build its own relationship to the world from the experience always renewed by the crossing. Ce faisant, leurs visées se transforment : il ne s'agit plus de construire des mondes, mais d'engager le spectateur-usager à construire son propre rapport au monde à partir de l'expérience toujours renouvelée de la traversée. Abstract: International audience; Acquisition time is a major limitation in recovering brain white matter microstructure with diffusion Magnetic Resonance Imaging. Finding a sampling scheme that maximizes signal quality and satisfies given time constraints is NP-hard. We alleviate that by introducing a relaxed probabilistic model of the problem, for which sub-optimal solutions can be found effectively. Our model is defined in the $q\tau$ space, so that it captures both spacial and temporal phenomena. The experiments on synthetic data and in-vivo diffusion images of the C57Bl6 wild-type mice reveal superiority of our technique over random sampling and even distribution in the $q\tau$ space.

Abstract: International audience; We assess the test-retest reproducibility of time-dependent q-space indices (qτ-indices) in three C57Bl6 wild-type mice. To estimate qτ-indices from the four-dimensional qτ diffusion signal - varying over 3D q-space and diffusion time - we use our recent Multi-Spherical Diffusion MRI (MS-dMRI) method. Using MS-dMRI we could reliably estimate qτ-indices for two out of three subjects, where acquisition artifacts caused the offsets of the last subject.

Abstract: International audience; Synopsis Kleine-Levin syndrome (KLS) is a rare neurological disorder characterized by episodes of severe hypersomnia, apathy, cognitive impairment, derealization and behavioral disturbances. Between episodes, patients have normal sleep, mood and behavior. Apathy is a prominent clinical feature of KLS but its pathophysiology is not known. Here we used mean apparent propagator to investigate white matter changes in KLS and correlated diffusion changes with apathy scores. Results showed that the corpus callosum was involved in KLS during episodes and mean RTAP measures in the corpus callosum correlated with apathy scores. Results were in accordance with known motivation-based circuits involving the orbitomedial frontal cortex. Purpose Kleine-Levin syndrome (KLS) is a rare neurological disorder that mainly affects adolescents. KLS is characterized by relapsing-remitting episodes of severe hypersomnia, apathy, cognitive impairment, derealization and behavioral disturbances. Between episodes, patients have normal sleep, mood and behavior [1]. Each episode is of brief duration varying from a week to 1-2 months. No definite cause has been identified [1]. Anatomical MRI scan is normal, but brain scintigraphy can be abnormal during and between episodes [2]. Apathy is a prominent clinical feature of KLS [3] but its pathophysiology in the disease remains to be established. The mechanisms responsible for apathy may involve several circuits connecting the frontal lobes to the basal ganglia [4]. Here, we performed TBSS analyses on the return-to-the-axis probability (RTAP) measures that may be linked to apparent axonal diameter and inflammation [5] to analyze the integrity of white matter (WM) microstructure of healthy volunteers (HV) compared to symptomatic (KLS-S) and asymptomatic (KLS-AS) patients. Methods We prospectively included 20 KLS-AS (mean age: 22.2 ± 8.9 years, 9 males) and 20 HV age and sex-matched one by one. Twelve of these 20 patients were also scanned during episodes (KLS-S). Apathy was assessed using the Starkstein Apathy score [6]. Diffusion-weighted images were acquired using a Siemens Verio 3T with a 12-channel head coil (GRAPPA=2; TR/TE=7.7s/92ms; voxel size: 2.5mm isotropic; 64, 32 and 8 gradient directions for b-values of 1800, 700, and 300 s/mm² respectively) and 8 images without diffusion weighting were also acquired. We preprocessed the images using FSL (fsl.fmrib.ox.ac.uk/fsl/fslwiki/) and included correction for susceptibility (topup) and for eddy current distortions (eddycor) and creation of a binary mask of the brain (bet). Then, we generated RTAP maps of all subjects [7]. Voxelwise statistical analyses were carried out using TBSS, part of the FSL comparing RTAP maps of HV versus KLS-AS, HV versus KLS-S and KLS-AS versus KLS-S (paired t-test). Finally, in the TBSS-based ROI, we computed correlations between clinical scores (disease duration and apathy scores) and mean RTAP measures in this ROI and performed tractography on one healthy subject to determine its projection fibers. Abstract: Intertidal mudflats are complex ecosystems undergoing constant changes, home to infaunal invertebrates (benthic macrofauna), and migratory sites for particular birds : shorebirds. This research focuses on predator-prey interactions between shorebirds and their macrobenthic prey. The present thesis is composed of 8 chapters which illustrate different spatio-temporal scales : from seasons to the decade, and from the bay to the migratory flyway. These studies are based on regular benthic sampling of intertidal flats along the Bay of Biscay (France), as well as sampling data from the Dutch Wadden Sea and the Mauritanian Banc d’Arguin. Macrobenthic data (quality, sizes, densities, biomass) are linked with shorebird counts and data about their feeding behaviour (diet reconstruction from isotopes, faeces, modeling and video observations). These eight studies shed light on particular relationships between some prey and their predators, and the ecology of these interactions (including environmental variables such as inundation time, grain size, temperature, primary production, or even latitude). Particular attention is given to the variability of prey and predator behaviour in time and space. Inserts are included in between chapters to illustrate for instance different diet reconstruction techniques, anti-predation traits in marine molluscs, or relation between energy available and site selection in shorebirds.; Les vasières intertidales sont des environnements complexes et changeants, qui abritent des invertébrés enfouis dans le sédiment (la macrofaune benthique) et sont visités de manière saisonnière par de grands migrateurs : les oiseaux limicoles. Ce travail de recherche s’intéresse aux relations proie-prédateur entre les oiseaux limicoles et leur ressource alimentaire : la macrofaune benthique. La thèse est articulée en 8 chapitres qui présentent des études à différentes échelles spatio-temporelles : des saisons à la décennie, et de la baie à la route migratoire. Ces études sont basées sur un échantillonnage régulier des vasières intertidales du Golfe de Gascogne (France) ainsi que d’échantillonnages en mer des Wadden (Pays-Bas) et au Banc d’Arguin (Mauritanie). Les données de macrofaune (qualité, taille, densité, biomasse) sont couplées aux données de comptages de leurs prédateurs ainsi qu’à leur comportement alimentaire (reconstruction du régime alimentaire d’après les isotopes, les fécès, la modélisation ou l’observation de vidéos). Ces huit études apportent un éclairage sur l’écologie de leurs interactions (en intégrant des variables environnementales telles que le temps d’inondation, la granulométrie, la température, la production primaire, ou encore la latitude). We propose a functional basis approach that is specifically designed to represent the dMRI signal in this four-dimensional space – varying over gradient strength, direction and diffusion time – that we call the multi-spherical space. In particular, we provide regularization tools imposing signal sparsity and signal smoothness to drastically reduce the number of measurements we need to probe the properties of this multi-spherical space.

Abstract: International audience; Aggregation behaviour is the tendency for animals to group together, which may have important consequences on individual fitness. We used a combination of experimental and simulation approaches to study how genetic variation and social environment interact to influence aggregation dynamics in Drosophila. To do this, we used two different natural lines of Drosophila that arise from a polymorphism in the foraging gene (rovers and sitters). We placed groups of flies in a heated arena. Flies could freely move towards one of two small, cooler refuge areas. In groups of the same strain, sitters had a greater tendency to aggregate. The observed behavioural variation was based on only two parameters: the probability of entering a refuge and the likelihood of choosing a refuge based on the number of individuals present. We then directly addressed how different strains interact by mixing rovers and sitters within a group. Aggregation behaviour of each line was strongly affected by the presence of the other strain, without changing the decision rules used by each. Individuals obeying local rules shaped complex group dynamics via a constant feedback loop between the individual and the group. This study could help to identify the circumstances under which particular group compositions may improve individual fitness through underlying aggregation mechanisms under specific environmental conditions.

Abstract: International audience; A current problem Diffusion MRI (dMRI) based microscopy under the narrow pulse approximation is how to best exploit the 4D (q-space + diffusion time) nature of the signal. Assaf et al. showed that exploring the dMRI attenuation at different diffusion times provides information on the distribution of axonal diameters within a voxel in their seminal work: AxCaliber. However, AxCaliber requires knowing beforehand the predominant orientation of the axons within the analyzed volume to adjust the q-space sampling accordingly. In this work, we show that our novel sparse representation of the 3D+t dMRI signal, enables the recovery of axonal diameter distribution parameters without the need to know the axonal direction at acquisition time.

Abstract: We propose a new modeling approach for combining dates through the Event model by using hierarchical Bayesian statistics. The Event model aims to estimate the date of a context (unit of stratification) from individual dates assumed to be contemporaneous and which are affected by errors of different types: laboratory and calibration curve errors and also irreducible errors related to contaminations, taphonomic disturbances, etc, hence the possible presence of outliers. The Event model has a hierarchical structure which makes it possible to distinguish between date of an Event and dates of the artifacts involved. Prior information on the individual irreducible errors is introduced using a uniform shrinkage density with minimal assumptions about Bayesian parameters. The model is extended in the case of stratigraphic sequences which involve several Events with temporal order constraints (relative dating). Calculations are based on MCMC numerical techniques and can be performed using the ChronoModel software which is freeware, open source and cross-platform. This modeling provides a very simple way to automatically penalize outlying data without having to remove them from the dataset. This approach is compared to alternative approaches implemented in Oxcal or BCal software: we show that the Event model is more robust but generally yields less precise credibility intervals. Mathematical formulations are explained in detail and comparisons are done thanks to synthetic examples. Three application examples are shown: the radiocarbon dating of the shroud of Turin, the dating of a medieval potter's kiln in Lezoux (Auvergne, France) by using radiocarbon, archaeomagnetism and thermoluminescence, and the OSL dating of the Shi'bat Dihya 1 sequence in Wadi Surdud middle paleolithic complex (western Yemen).

Abstract: The social behavior variation is a very important issue for understanding evolution of sociality in animal kingdom. By studying genetic and environmental interactions influence on social behavior in Drosophila melanogaster, this thesis fits with this problematic and focus on the parameters which could explain the social behavior variations. In this research work, we studied and highlighted the existence of social behavior in Drosophila like learning and using social information in a spatial learning task, aggregation behavior and numerous social interactions. These behaviors are the first step before more sociality and their study with no-social species is essential to understand the evolution toward more sociality. The use of two lines from genetic polymorphism of the foraging gene (Rover and Sitter phenotypes) reveals differences in behavior between individuals and enable us to study the influence of genetic and environment parameters. Sitter individuals show more social behavior than Rover ones, using more social information and adopting more aggregation behavior. Variation of the genetic composition of the group influence the aggregation level of Rover individuals. They show more gregarious behavior with majority of Sitter individuals. These observations raise the question of the effects of the information source variations on the social behavior and their implication in interactions variations. The last part of this thesis focuses on the interactions between individuals in 12 different populations of Drosophila melanogaster. This approach revealed an important variation in social organization within species and opens new perspectives to study the evolution of sociality.This research bring new elements on factors influencing the change in social behavior and highlight new perspectives for the study of their evolution.; La variation des comportements sociaux est une problématique très importante pour appréhender l’évolution de la socialité dans le règne animal. Par l’étude des interactions entre les paramètres génétiques et environnementaux sur les comportements sociaux de la drosophile (Drosophila melanogaster), cette thèse s’inscrit dans cette problématique et cherche à mettre en évidence les paramètres déterminants pour la expliquer la variation des comportements sociaux des individus. Au cours de ce travail de recherche, on a pu étudier et mettre en évidence l’existence de comportements sociaux chez la drosophile tels que l’apprentissage et l’utilisation des informations sociales dans un contexte de recherche spatiale, le comportement d’agrégation et l’établissement de nombreuses interactions. Ces comportements sont les premiers pas vers plus de socialité et leur étude est indispensable pour comprendre l’évolution vers plus de coopération et de communication entre les individus. L’utilisation de deux lignées issues du polymorphisme génétique du gène foraging (phénotypes Rover et Sitter) a permis de mettre en évidence des différences de comportements entre les individus et d’étudier les interactions entre paramètres génétiques et environnementaux. Les individus de phénotype Sitter témoignent d’un comportement plus social que les individus Rover, utilisant préférentiellement l’information sociale, ils forment aussi des agrégats plus importants semblant attirés par le plus grand nombre. On note aussi que la variation de la composition génétique du groupe entraine une modification du comportement d’agrégation du groupe. Ainsi, les variations interindividuelles influencent le comportement collectif. Le dernier volet de cette thèse s’intéresse aux interactions entre les individus au sein de 12 populations différentes de l’espèce Drosophila melanogaster. Cette approche a permis de révéler une grande variation de l’organisation sociale des individus au sein d’une même espèce et ouvre de nouvelles perspectives pour étudier l’évolution de la socialité.Ce travail de recherche permet d’apporter de nouveaux éléments sur les facteurs influençant la variation des comportements sociaux et de mettre en avant de nouvelles perspectives pour l’étude de leur évolution.

This abstract proposes an efficient method to inform a given functional network on its anatomical support: how many anatomical connections exist between functionally connected regions and what their geometries are. Diffusion MRI being the only non invasive method allowing to have access to the micro-structure of the WM [3], we used diffusion information to underline the degree of connectivity between functionally connected regions while taking advantage of WM fibers reconstruction to determine the way taken by the anatomical network supporting the functional network. Due to the complex dynamical alteration of epilepsy, the study of large-scale functional connectivity is difficult . But diffusion imaging studies have shown alterations of the WM between epileptic zones and connected areas [4,5]. This methodology allows to add qualitative (degree of connectivity) and geometrical (WM fibers reconstruction) information on the anatomical network supporting an epileptic network mostly determined by magneto-encephalography (MEG).

Abstract: To appear in Scandinavian Journal of Statistics; Self-regulating processes are stochastic processes whose local regularity, as measured by the pointwise Hölder exponent, is a function of amplitude. They seem to provide relevant miodels for various signals arising e.g. in geophysics and biomedicine. We propose in this work an estimator of the self-regulating function (that is, the function relating amplitude and Hölder regularity) of the self-regulating midpoint displacement process introduced in [4] and study some of its properties. We prove that it is almost surely convergent and obtain a central limit theorem. Numerical simulations show that the estimator behaves well in practice.

Abstract: We are interested in the estimation and prediction of a parametric model on a short dataset upon which it is expected to overfit and perform badly. To overcome the lack of data (relatively to the dimension of the model) we propose the construction of an informative hierarchical Bayesian prior based upon another longer dataset which is assumed to share some similarities with the original, short dataset. We illustrate the performance of our prior on simulated dataset from three standard models. Then we apply the methodology to a working model for the electricity load forecasting on real datasets, where it leads to a substantial improvement of the quality of the predictions.

Unfortunately, spatial resolution is limited due to the ill-posed nature of the MEG inverse problem for estimating source currents from the electromagnetic measurement. Cortex parcellation into regions sharing functional features constitutes a relevant spatial regularization. We propose a whole cortex parcellation method based on the anatomical connectivity mapped by diffusion MRI. Inside areas of a preparcellation, the correlation matrix between connectivity profiles is clustered. The cortex parcellation is then updated testing the similarity of diffusion data on both sides of pre-parcellation boundaries. MEG inverse problem is constrained from this result. Two methods have been developed. The first one is based on the subdivision of source space regarding the parcellation. The cortical activity is obtained on a set of parcels and its analysis is simplified. Not to force sources to have exactly the same value inside a cortical area, we develop an alternative method. We introduce a new regularization term in the MEG inverse problem which constrain sources in a same region to have close values. Our methods are applied on simulated and real subjects. Clinical application is also performed on epileptic data. Abstract: The characteristic feature of semi-selfsimilar process is the invariance of its finite dimensional distributions by certain dilation for specific scaling factor. Estimating the scale parameter $\lambda$ and the Hurst index of such processes is one of the fundamental problem in the literature. We present some iterative method for estimation of the scale and Hurst parameters which is addressed for semi-selfsimilar processes with stationary increments. This method is based on some flexible sampling scheme and evaluating sample variance of increments in each scale intervals $[\lambda^{n-1}, \lambda^n)$, $n\in \mathbb{N}$. For such iterative method we find the initial estimation for the scale parameter by evaluating cumulative sum of moving sample variances and also by evaluating sample variance of preceding and succeeding moving sample variance of increments. We also present a new efficient method for estimation of Hurst parameter of selfsimilar processes. As an example we introduce simple fractional Brownian motion (sfBm) which is semi-selfsimilar with stationary increments. We present some simulations and numerical evaluation to illustrate the results and to estimate the scale for sfBm as a semi-selfsimilar process. We also present another simulation and show the efficiency of our method in estimation of Hurst parameter by comparing its performance with some previous methods., Comment: 15 pages

Abstract: Reconnu par les spécialistes et exposé dans les musées depuis quelques années seulement, l'art assisté par ordinateur a débuté dans les années 70. Il s'inscrit dans la continuité des genres traditionnels tels que la peinture, la musique ou la vidéo, mais le pinceau, les instruments et la composition deviennent programmes, les images ou les notes de musique sont numériques, l'ordinateur décode, transforme et permet de représenter les couleurs et les mouvements. La matière même de l'art numérique peut être vue d'une manière très simple, comme une suite de 0 et de 1 manipulable par un ordinateur et interprétable par l'artiste et le spectateur. Mais au-delà de ce codage binaire, il s'agit avant tout d'un outil de création. Que ce soit dans les arts plastiques, la musique ou la littérature, parmi la grande variété de genres abordés par l'art numérique, pas facile de s'y retrouver ! Les spécialistes eux-mêmes ne sont pas toujours d'accord quant à la définition de tel ou tel courant artistique. Ces désaccords sont peut-être liés à la jeunesse des arts numériques. Sans oublier l'évolution rapide de la technologie elle-même, qui rend plus complexes les moyens d'expression à disposition des artistes. Dans ce document, nous nous focaliserons sur les formes d'art plastique et graphique en deux dimensions, affiliées à la peinture.

Abstract: International audience; Introduction Recent studies show an atypical perceptive behavior on face processing in autism. Functional studies show that the fusiform gyrus is involved in face perception and is not or less activated in autistic subjects [1]. These face processing is believed to affect social interaction, which can be quantified by ADOS scores and related to the functionality of the prefrontal cortex. The aim of this study is to quantify anatomical changes in autistic subjects on the white matter tracts that traverse the fusiform gyrus, the prefrontal cortex and the superior temporal gyrus and correlate them with ADOS scores to complete. In this study, we first verified the connectivity difference between the fusiform gyrus, the prefrontal cortex and the superiotemporal gyrus through fMRI. Then, we used Diffusion Tensor MRI (DT) images to assess the integrity of automatically segmented white matter bundles connecting these girii. Finally, we perform statistical analysis on these fiber bundles using diffusivity measures calculated from DT to characterize tissue microstructure changes and correlate these changes with ADOS scores. Materials and methods Data acquisition. We acquired dMRI of eight adults with high-functioning autism or Asperger syndrome and eleven healthy adults at the University of Buenos Aires on a GE Signa Hdxt 3.0T scanner. The acquisition consisted in 80 directions with b=1000s/mm2 and 1 image with b=0s/mm2 with 1×1×1.3mm voxel size. Data preparation. We started by generating an unbiased template of the DT images and registering linearly and non-linearly all of the images to it. Then, we computed DT-based full brain tractography for every subject. Finally, we used the tools developed by Wassermann et al [2] to cluster fiber bundles and select the bundles traversing the fusiform gyrus. This gyrus was identified through the girii parcelation of the JHU atlas. We clustered these bundles across subjects extracting a set of population-obtained bundles (see for Fig 1 for an example). Data analysis. We applied the statistical analysis of Wassermann et al [3] for each population-obtained bundle, we calculated its tract-probability map (TPM) (see Fig.3 for an example) and skeletonized this map to obtain a bidimensional representation of each bundle. For each patient, we projected the measure of diffusivity (FA, axial or radial diffusivity) around the tract to their closest point on the skeleton and we average them with a weight according to the TPM. This produces two populations (one for autists and one for controls) of projected functions on the skeleton. For each tract and each measure, we used a cluster-based permutation hypothesis testing approach [4] to detect dissimilarities between both populations. For significant clusters, we calculated correlation between the mean diffusivity measure and ADOS scores. Results We found different clusters (Fig 1, red voxels) where there were dissimilarities between autistic and healthy subjects in FA measures on tracts traversing the fusiform gyrus in both hemispheres of the brain. We observed a reduction of FA values in a cluster (Fig 2, red voxels) on a bundle joined the superior temporal gyrus to the prefrontal cortex. In this cluster, the mean FA on the autistic subjects was strongly correlated with their scores to ADOS social interaction with a correlation coefficient lower than -0.96 a p-value lower than 0.004 (Fig3). Discussion First, results revealing difference between controls and autists in clusters on fiber bundle traversing the fusiform gyrus are in agreement with current literature giving this area as a classical area of face perception. Agreement reinforced by functional study of autists showing a drop of connectivity between the fusiform gyrus and the superior temporal cortex in comparison with controls (Fig 4). The localisation of the cluster where we founded a correlation with ADOS social interaction scores (Fig3) is in agreement with current anatomical literature, the superior temporal gyrus being a classical area of face perception and emotion and the prefrontal cortex a classical area of social interaction. This is reinforced by the strong inverse correlation showing that in this linking cluster a drop of FA value is strongly correlated by a rise of the intensity of autism. Our fMRI study (Fig 4) corroborates these statistical results, showing a drop of connectivity between the prefrontal cortex and the superior temporal gyrus. Disruption of white matter tracts between regions implicated in social functioning and face perception may contribute to increase the severity of autism.

Abstract: International audience; Nous proposons un test pour comparer le paramètre de longue mémoire de deux processus éventuellement corrélés. Le test est construit à partir de la statistique V/S basée sur deux estimations de la variance asymptotique des sommes partielles. Nous établissons la consistance asymptotique du test. Des simulations illustrent les performances du test sur des petits échantillons et sa sensibilité au paramètre de type fenêtre de la statistique V/S. A partir d'un développement asymptotique de la statistique V/S, nous obtenons un critère adaptatif pour le choix de ce paramètre.

Abstract: International audience; Cette note est dédiée à l'estimation du paramètre de longue mémoire dans les séries temporelles observées à des temps aléatoires. L'existence de corrélations à long terme dans la distribution des pannes électriques, i.e. "black-out", doit trouver son origine dans la politique de maintenance et de restauration des opérateurs de réseaux. Les travaux portent sur deux transformations des séries visant à préserver l'exposant de mémoire et à récupérer un échantillonnage régulier. A la suite, une méthode d'estimation prenant en compte les temps d'observation et les valeurs observées est dérivée. Le lien entre persistance (H > 0.5) et restauration des réseaux électriques est validé.

Abstract: This paper investigates the second order properties of a stationary process after random sampling. While a short memory process gives always rise to a short memory one, we prove that long-memory can disappear when the sampling law has heavy enough tails. We prove that under rather general conditions the existence of the spectral density is preserved by random sampling. We also investigate the effects of deterministic sampling on seasonal long-memory.
