Abstract

An experiment to measure the 2β – decay of 150Nd to excited levels of 150Sm using a highly purified 2.381 kg sample of Nd2O3 is in progress in the low-background set-up with 4 HPGe detectors (∼225 cm3 volume each). The detector is located deep underground (3600 m w.e.) at the STELLA facility of the Gran Sasso National Laboratory (LNGS) of the INFN (Italy). Two γ quanta with energies 334.0 keV and 406.5 keV emitted after deexcitation of the 01 + excited level of 150Sm have been observed in the experimental data accumulated over 39898 h. The preliminary half-life value for 2β – decay of 150Nd to the first 0+ excited level in 150Sm (after the exposure of 10.8 kg × yr) was estimated as T 1 / 2 = 9.7 − 1.9 + 2.9 stat . ± 1.5 syst . × 10 19 yr. The experiment is under data taking with the aim to improve the statistical uncertainties.

In particular, efforts to realize very low background detectors have opened their effective application to the search of rare processes deep underground. Several cases will be outlined offering—to some extent—a discussion of several inorganic crystal scintillators' performances and their potentiality for the future.

Abstract

International audience; Final results of studies of 116Cd 2β decay with CdWO4 crystal scintillators, enriched in 116Cd to 82%, are presented. After few years (2011 – 2017) of measurements with radiopure 116CdWO4 scintillators (mass of 1.162 kg) at the Gran Sasso underground laboratory (Italy), the half-life of 116Cd relatively to 2ν2β decay to the ground state of 116Sn was measured with the highest up-to-date accuracy as T1/2=(2.63−0.12+0.11)×1019 yr. A new limit on 0ν2β decay of 116Cd was set as T1/2≥2.2×1023 yr at 90% C.L., which is the most stringent to-date restriction for this isotope. Limits for 0ν2β decay with majoron(s) emission, Lorentz-violating 2ν2β decay and 2β transitions to excited states of 116Sn were set at the level of T1/2≥1020−1022 yr.

Abstract

International audience; Recent developments, results, and perspectives arising from double beta decay experiments at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory (LNGS) of the INFN by using HPGe detectors and crystal scintillators and by exploiting various approaches and different isotopes are summarized. The measurements here presented have been performed in the experimental set-ups of the DAMA collaboration. These setups are optimized for low-background studies and operate deep underground at LNGS. The presented results are of significant value to the field, and the sensitivity achieved for some of the considered isotopes is one of the best available to date.

Abstract

The double beta decay of $^{150}$Nd to the first excited 0$^+$ level of $^{150}$Sm ($E_{exc}$ = 740.5 keV) has been investigated with the help of the ultra-low-background setup consisting of four HP Ge (high-purity germanium) detectors (${\approx}$ 225 cm$^3$ volume each one) at the Gran Sasso underground laboratory of INFN (Italy). A highly purified 2.381-kg sample of neodymium oxide (Nd$_2$O$_3$) was used as a source of ${\gamma}$ quanta expected in the decays. Gamma quanta with energies 334.0 keV and 406.5 keV emitted after deexcitation of the $0_1^+$ 740.5 keV level of $^{150}$Sm are observed in the coincidence spectra accumulated over 16375 h. The half-life relatively to the two neutrino double beta decay $^{150}$Nd $\rightarrow$ $^{150}$Sm(0$_1^+$) is measured as $T_{1/2} = [4.7_{-1.9}^{+4.1}\text{(stat)} {\pm} 0.5\text{(syst)}] {\times} 10^{19} y$, in agreement with results of previous experiments., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures and 2 tables

Abstract

Profiting of the favourable conditions offered by the Gran Sasso underground laboratory and of the several low-background DAMA set-ups, many and competitive results have been obtained for rare processes. Here the main results will be briefly resumed and some more details about the latest activities will be given. In particular, the searches on ββdecays of 106Cd and 116Cd and the perspectives of a complementary investigation on those Dark Matter (DM) candidates inducing just nuclear recoils, by exploiting the directionality approach with the anisotropic ZnWO4 scintillators, will be underlined.

Abstract

Double beta decay of $^{116}$Cd has been investigated with the help of radiopure enriched $^{116}$CdWO$_4$ crystal scintillators in the experiment Aurora. The half-life of $^{116}$Cd relatively to the 2$\nu$2$\beta$ decay of $^{116}$Cd to the ground level of $^{116}$Sn is measured with the highest up-to-date accuracy as $T_{1/2}$ = [2.69 $\pm$ 0.02 (stat.) $\pm$ 0.14 (syst.)] $\times$ 10$^{19}$ yr. A new improved limit on the 0$\nu$2$\beta$ decay of $^{116}$Cd to the ground state of $^{116}$Sn is set as $T_{1/2}\geq 2.4 \times 10^{23}$ yr at 90\% C.L., that corresponds to the effective Majorana neutrino mass limit in the range $\langle$$m_\nu$$\rangle$ $\le$ $(1.1-1.6)$ eV, depending on the nuclear matrix elements used in the estimations. New improved limits on other $2\beta$ processes in $^{116}$Cd (decays with majoron emission, transitions to excited levels of $^{116}$Sn) were set at the level of $T_{1/2}\geq 10^{21}-10^{22}$ yr., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures

Abstract

Double beta processes in 136Ce, 138Ce and 142Ce have been searched for by exploiting the active source approach with the help of a 6.9 g CeCl3 crystal as a scintillator for the first time at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory (LNGS) of the INFN (Italy). The total measurement time is 1638 h; even such a small exposure has allowed the achievement of some improved half-life limits on 2β decay processes in these isotopes at the level of 1016–1018 yr. In particular (90% C.L.): T0νeβ+1/2(136Ce) ≥ 8.8 × 1016 yr, T2νeβ+1/2(136Ce) ≥2.4 × 1016 yr, T2ν2K1/2(136Ce) ≥3.2 × 1016 yr, T2ν2K1/2(138Ce) ≥4.4 × 1016 yr, and T2ν2β−1/2(142Ce) ≥1.4 × 1018 yr. Possible future perspectives are also briefly addressed.

Abstract

International audience; Millimetron is a Russian-led 12 m diameter submillimeter and far-infrared space observatory which is included in the Space Plan of the Russian Federation for launch around 2017. With its large collecting area and state-of-the-art receivers, it will enable unique science and allow at least one order of magnitude improvement with respect to the Herschel Space Observatory. Millimetron will be operated in two basic observing modes: as a single-dish observatory, and as an element of a ground-space very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) system. As single-dish, angular resolutions on the order of 3 to 12 arc sec will be achieved and spectral resolutions of up to a million employing heterodyne techniques. As VLBI antenna, the chosen elliptical orbit will provide extremely large VLBI baselines (beyond 300,000 km) resulting in micro-arc second angular resolution.

Abstract

During the main and early recovery phase of a geomagnetic storm on February 18, 1998, the Equator-S ion composition instrument (ESIC) observed spectral features which typically represent the differences in loss along the drift path in the energy range (5–15 keV/e) where the drift changes from being E × B dominated to being gradient and curvature drift dominated. We compare the expected energy spectra modeled using a Volland-Stern electric field and a Weimer electric field, assuming charge exchange along the drift path, with the observed energy spectra for H+ and O+. We find that using the Weimer electric field gives much better agreement with the spectral features, and with the observed losses. Neither model, however, accurately predicts the energies of the observed minima.Key words. Magnetospheric physics (energetic particles trapped; plasma convection; storms and substorms)
