1. PESTIPOND: A fate model of pesticides in ponds

Abstract: Non-point pollution by pesticides affects the quality of drinking water supplies and aquatic environments. Ponds collecting runoff and erosion fluxes offer a complementary tool to mitigate pesticide transfer to aquatic ecosystems. Pesticides mitigation results from various physicochemical processes operating in the water column, the sediment layer, the vegetation, and the suspended particles of ponds. Many studies on ponds dissipation potential focus on nitrates and suspended sediments, but very little is known about the behavior of pesticides. In order to predict and enhance the dissipation of pesticides in ponds, a new 0D time-dependent model was designed, “PESTIPOND.” The dissipation function of ponds is due to a combination of transport, transfer, and transformation processes of pesticides in an interplay between pond compartments. A previous review helped us identify the main processes of pesticides dissipation in ponds and their controlling factors. A time-dependent environmental fate model is currently developed to describe the behavior of dissolved and particulate pesticides at the pond scale. We tested the performance of this process-based model by simulating the behavior of four molecules with contrasted physicochemical properties (i.e., Aclonifen, chlorotoluron, s-metolachlor, and tebuconazole) in a synthetic scenario representing an experimental pond study. PESTIPOND enabled to compute the outlet concentration of pesticides in ponds based on their inlet concentration. The model simulated the behavior of pesticides in water, sediments, vegetation, and suspended particles of a pond due to sorption, settling/resuspension, volatilization, and degradation processes. The conceptual model is based on pesticide mass-budget equations in pond compartments depending of climate and hydraulic conditions. Sensitivity analysis provides a framework to recognize important variables in the computational model. We adopted the Morris and Sobol methods for the sensitivity analysis of PESTIPOND to identify dominant parameters influencing the model outputs. A preliminary result showed that the prevailing processes determining pesticide fate were sorption and biodegradation for dissolved pesticides and settling for particulate pesticides. The identification of effective mechanisms can be helpful to hierarchize processes based on their contribution to the dissipation function of ponds. This hierarchization may improve the estimation of ponds efficiency with respect to pesticide dissipation. In the future, implementing the PESTIPOND model in SWAT is expected to extend the prediction of ponds dissipation to the catchment scale. PESTIPOND will be particularly helpful to set up dimensioning criteria to design performant and efficient ponds to mitigate pesticides transfer into the environment.

Abstract: International audience; Inside sand filters, as inside other microporous substrates, several invertebrates create temporary burrows that impact on water movement through the filter. Lumbricids Eisenia fetida and Eisenia andrei live under a wide range of environmental conditions and have a high reproduction rate so they are good candidates for ecological engineering tests. We assessed the impact of these species at different densities (0, 100, 500, 1000 g m−2) on the hydraulic conductivity of small-sized experimental filters made of columns filled with filter sand classically used for sanitation mixed with 5% organic matter. The hydraulic conductivity was recorded every 7 days over 37 days in non-saturated conditions. On day 23, 40 g of peat bedding was added at the column surfaces to simulate a surface clogging organic matter pulse input. Columns with an earthworm density equal or superior to 500 g m−2 revealed the highest hydraulic conductivities during the first 21 days. At these densities, the hydraulic conductivity was also restored in less than 7 days after the addition of the surface organic matter, showing the influence of the earthworm species on the resilience capacity of the hydraulic conductivity. It was also highlighted that the hydraulic flow was dependent on the lumbricid densities with an optimal density/effect around 500 g m−2 in this specific substrate composition. This study showed that the feeding habits and burrowing activity of both Eisenia species significantly enhanced the hydraulic flow in a sandy substrate, providing a sustainable solution to limit the clogging of the substrate similar to the one used in filters to treat wastewater.

4. Global carbon sequestration through continental chemical weathering in a climatic change context

Abstract: Here, we simulate carbon dioxide (CO2) sequestration in 300 major world river basins (about 70% of global surface area) through carbonates dissolution and silicate hydrolysis. For each river basin, the daily timescale impacts under both the RCP 2.6 and RCP 8.5 climate scenarios were assessed relative to a historic baseline (1969-1999) using a cascade of models accounting for the hydrological evolution under climate change scenarios. Here we show that global temporal evolution of the CO2 uptake presents a general increase in the annual amount of CO2 consumed from 0.247 Pg C·y-1 to 0.261 and 0.273 Pg C·y-1, respectively for RCP 2.6 and RCP 8.5. Besides, despite showing a general increase for the global daily carbon sequestration, both climate scenarios present a decrease between June and August. Such projected changes have been mapped and evaluated against changes in hydrology, identifying hot spots and moments for the annual and seasonal periods.

Abstract: The Mekong River in Southeast Asia, one of the world’s great rivers, has been facing disruption of its sediment balance and resultant impacts on nutrient fluxes, aquatic ecology, floodplains and the delta. Using monitoring data from 1993 to 2018, we estimated the temporal variability of sediment loads in Tonle Sap and Lower Mekong Rivers in Cambodia, assessing the sediment linkage between the Tonle Sap Lake and the Mekong mainstem, which are connected by a seasonally reversing flow through the Tonle Sap River. We estimated the annual sediment in the Mekong mainstem of 72 ± 38 Mt/year at Kratie (upstream) and 78 ± 22 Mt/year at Chroy Changvar from 1993 to 2018 (just upstream of the Chatumuk confluence). Our sediment load estimation of the Mekong River is consistent with other recent estimates of sediment load on the Lower Mekong. However, the result is lower than reported in some older studies (prior to the 2000s), which is consistent with sediment trapping by dams on Upper Mekong mainstem and major tributaries. Our analysis indicates that Tonle Sap Lake provided 0.65 ± 0.6 Mt/year of sediment annually to the Lower Mekong River from 1995 to 2000. However, since 2001, Tonle Sap Lake has become a sink for sediment, accumulating an average of 1.35 ± 0.7 Mt annually. Net storage of sediment in Tonle Sap Lake reduces the annual sediment transport to the delta, further compounding the effects of reduced sediment delivery to the delta resulting from upstream dam development and instream sand mining.

Abstract: International audience; La grave crise pandémique que nous vivons n’est pas seulement sanitaire, elle est aussi écologique et sociale. Si elle remet en cause le dualisme nature/culture, elle appelle également à renouveler les rapports qu’entretiennent science et société. Changement d’usage des terres, déforestation et fragmentation, élevage intensif, exploitation minière ou forestière, chasse, urbanisation, diminution de la biodiversité : autant d’éléments qui perturbent la faune sauvage, et favorisent les transferts de pathogènes entre espèces. La mondialisation des échanges rend ensuite possible la diffusion de virus à l’échelle planétaire.Mais les sociétés humaines ne sont pas toutes égales face au risque infectieux. Il y a à cela des causes génétiques, parce que les populations humaines ne sont pas génétiquement uniformes et que les pathogènes ont une grande capacité d’adaptation, mais aussi des causes culturelles et sociales, en raison du rôle majeur des comportements. Si les épidémies d’ampleur sont relativement fréquentes dans l’histoire humaine, celles du passé, et leur gestion par les sociétés d’alors, ne sont que depuis peu étudiées en profondeur. Or cette étude est un élément indispensable pour modéliser, et donc prévoir, l’évolution de la pandémie actuelle comme des prochaines, et l’impact qu’elles auront sur nos sociétés.L’Institut Écologie et Environnement du CNRS, dont l’objectif est de répondre aux enjeux planétaires posés par le changement global aux interfaces entre les sciences de la Terre, de la vie, de l’Homme et de la société, réunit toutes les compétences nécessaires pour étudier cet ensemble.

Abstract: International audience; The Red River is an Asian river system strongly affected by global changes. This paper aims to characterize and quantify the suspended sediment flux (SF) over the basin under the influences of short-term climate variability and dam constructions. SF was evaluated at the outlets of main tributaries and along the main course of the Red River from 2000 to 2013 based on daily simulations from a modelling study. A reference scenario (without dams) was carried out to disentangle the impacts of short-term climate variability and damming by comparing to actual conditions. Without dams (reference scenario), the basin would generate 106.9 Mt yr−1 of SF to the downstream delta from 2000 to 2013, with a specific sediment yield (SSY) of 778.8 t km−2 yr−1. However, under the impacts of short-term climate variability and dams, the mean annual SSY decreased to 84.5 t km−2 yr−1. At the outlet of the basin, the annual mean SF of 2008–2013 (after new dam constructions) got reduced by 90% (10% related to short-term climate or atmospheric variability and 80% to dam constructions) compared to the reference scenario (without dams) during 2000–2007. The Thao tributary is the most sensitive to short-term climate variability while the Da tributary is mostly affected by the huge-capacity dams. Mean annual retentions of sediment by dams ranged from 7.1 to 111.0 Mt yr−1. Simple rating curves between monthly mean discharge (Q) and SF were established for estimating SF at the outlet of the tributaries and the Red River. High soil erosion (above 2000 t km−2 yr−1) occurred in the middle Thao and the lower Da tributaries. Precipitation, slope and agriculture practices are the key influence factors for soil erosion in the basin.

Abstract: The increase in water salinisation in catchments has led to increased concern in assessing major ion loadings in freshwater environments. In this study, we couple a globally fitted model on chemical weathering to the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) for the estimation of daily geochemical loadings at the catchment scale, “SWATLitho”. The enhancements include i) a modification on the discretisation of the catchment area by integrating a layer describing lithology (QSWATLitho), and ii) the development of an extra module to compute the ionic loads derived from the chemical weathering of rocks. The model is sensitive to input data resolution, yielding the best results when including local data. Larger spatial and temporal discrepancies are found in one tributary, associated with point sources impacting the loadings; while these discrepancies are lower at headwater subbasins. Results suggest that, despite of these discrepancies, the average simulation of the daily ionic loadings is reasonable.

Abstract: International audience; Ponds in agricultural areas are ubiquitous water retention systems acting as reactive biogeochemicalhotspots controlling pesticide dissipation and transfer at the catchment scale. Several issues need to be addressed in order to understand, follow-up and predict the role of ponds in limiting pesticide transfer at the catchment scale. In this review, we present a critical overview of functional processes underpinning pesticide dissipation in ponds. We highlight the need to distinguish degradative and non-degradative processes and to understand the role of the sediment-water interfacein pesticide dissipation. Yet it is not well-established how pesticide dissipation in ponds governs the pesticide transfer at the catchment scale under varying hydro-climatic conditions and agricultural operation practices. To illustrate the multi-scale and dynamic aspects of this issue, we sketch a modelling framework integrating the role of ponds at the catchment scale. Such an integratedframework can improve the spatial prediction of pesticide transfer and risk assessment across the catchment-ponds-river continuum to facilitate management rules and operations.

Abstract: The export of riverine dissolved organic carbon (DOC) to the oceans is determinant in carbon exchanges of the estuaries and oceanic food webs. Past research returned a global DOC export around 160–450 TgC.yr−1 by using complex process-based models or yearly average estimates that could have been misjudged. In this study, we try to understand the complex processes explaining daily DOC exports among 341 exoreic watersheds covering 71% of freshwater flows to the oceans. Based on a dataset of DOC concentrations among rivers at the global scale, we were able to link DOC concentrations to daily discharge, the ration between the soil organic carbon content and the amount of precipitations and the average air temperature in the watersheds. We have found a global riverine DOC flux of 131.6 TgC.yr−1 based on daily data and a generic model. Tropical and cold watersheds are the main contributors with 49.5% and 33.3% of the global riverine DOC flux on the two last decades while temperate, semi-arid and polar basins represent 15.9%, 0.7% and 0.6%, respectively. Temporal exports range from 0.1 to 0.16 TgC.day−1 in tropical areas, 0.03–0.32 TgC.day−1 in cold areas and 0.03–0.08 TgC.day−1 in temperate areas. Atlantic and Arctic oceans receive the most important fluxes (0.12–0.2 and 0.01–0.26 TgC.day−1). In a climate change context, this generic equation could be introduced in hydrological modelling tools to predict future DOC fluxes trends.

Abstract: 14 pages; International audience; This study presents a process-based-empirical model for the assessment of ionic fluxes derived from chemical weathering of rocks (ICWR) at a global scale. The equations are designed and the parameters fitted using riverine transport of dissolved major ions Ca2+, Mg2+, K+, Na+, Cl−, SO42−, and alkalinity at a global scale by combining point sampling analysis with spatial descriptions of hydrology, climate, topography, lithology and soil variables such as mineral composition and regolith thickness. Different configurations of the model are considered and the results show that the previously reported “soil shielding” effect on chemical weathering (CW) of rocks presents different values for each of the ions considered. Overall, there is good agreement between median and ranges in observed and simulated data, but further analysis is required to downscale the model to catchment scale. Application to the global scale provides the first global ICWR map, resulting in an average cationic flux derived from chemical weathering of 734·106 Mg·y−1, where 58% is Ca2+, 15% is Mg2+, 24% is Na+ and 3% is K+, and an average anionic flux derived from chemical weathering of 2640·106 Mg·y−1, where 74% is alkalinity, 18% is SO42−, and 8% is Cl−. Hyperactive and hotspot areas are elucidated and compared between ions.

Abstract: An elevated nitrogen concentration in water is one of the main problems affecting water quality in Mediterranean rivers. The objectives of this study were (1) to evaluate the contribution of the Tafna catchment to the nitrate load entering the Mediterranean Sea, (2) to quantify the impact of agriculture on the nitrate concentration in water bodies, (3) to evaluate nitrate loads entering groundwater, and (4) to quantify the role of reservoirs in nitrate retention. A SWAT model was applied during the period 2003 to 2011. The discharge calibration was based on a previous study by Zettam et al. (2017). NSE efficiencies ranged from 0.421 to 0.75,R(2)ranged from 0.25 to 0.84, and PBIAS ranged from 3.68 to 39.42. The simulations of monthly nitrate loads were satisfactory in the upstream sampling stations, with NSE between 0.48 and 0.65 andR(2)between 0.63 and 0.68. The PBIAS was satisfactory in all the sampling stations (- 36.30 to 10.42). In the downstream sampling stations, the calibration of the monthly nitrate loads was unsatisfactory (NSE ranged from - 0.26 to 0.21 andR(2)ranged from 0.02 to 0.25). Fertilisation was the main N input in the catchment, while the main N output was plant uptake. The Tafna River carried an annual average of 37 to 85.5 t N year(-1)into the Mediterranean Sea. The simulation also showed that reservoirs in the Tafna basin contain a large quantity of nitrates, i.e. 62% on average of the total amount of nitrates transported annually by the Tafna River.

Abstract: Modeling is a useful way to understand human and climate change impacts on the water resources of agricultural watersheds. Calibration and validation methodologies are crucial in forecasting assessments. This study explores the best calibration methodology depending on the level of hydrological alteration due to human-derived stressors. The Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model is used to evaluate hydrology in South-West Europe in a context of intensive agriculture and water scarcity. The Index of Hydrological Alteration (IHA) is calculated using discharge observation data. A comparison of two SWAT calibration methodologies are done, a conventional calibration (CC) based on recorded in-stream water quality and quantity and an additional calibration (AC) adding crop managements practices. Even if the water quality and quantity trends are similar between CC and AC, water balance, irrigation and crop yields are different. In the context of rainfall decrease, water yield decreases in both CC and AC, while crop productions present opposite trends (+33% in CC and &minus, 31% in AC). Hydrological performance between CC and AC is correlated to IHA: When the level of IHA is under 80%, AC methodology is necessary. The combination of both calibrations appears essential to better constrain the model and to forecast the impact of climate change or anthropogenic influences on water resources.

Study Focus This study analyses water mass variations for the whole Garonne basin (50,000 km2 drainage area). To do so, Total Water Storage Anomalies (TWSA) from seven global solutions based on the Gravity Recovery And Climate Experiment (GRACE) satellite mission measurements (˜300 km spatial resolution) are inter-compared with TWSA from two hydrological models, SAFRAN-ISBA-MODCOU (SIM) and Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT), between January 2003 and December 2010. New Hydrological Insights for the Region Despite the small size of the Garonne basin compared to GRACE spatial resolution, good agreement between GRACE solutions and hydrological model TWSA has been found (maximum correlation coefficient ˜0.9 and Nash-Sutcliffe Efficiency, NSE, ˜0.7). These datasets showed that TWSA in the Garonne basin is mainly due to water stored in the first dozen meters of soil and in the shallow aquifer. To a smaller extent, snow also influences Garonne TWSA. Open surface water TWSA is quite small and TWSA from deep aquifer is negligible. The most important drought period occurred in 2011/2012, due to low precipitation during the two hydrological years and ETR close to previous years. Important precipitation in 2013/2014 helps to refill the water stocks. This study also showed that GRACE and models mismatches should be due to GRACE poor spatial resolution, but also to its monthly time resolution (rarely shown in previous studies).

Abstract: The separate and combined effects of climate change and forest clearcutting on discharge, suspended particulate matter (SPM) and particulate organic carbon (POC) load at a seasonal and annual scale were evaluated for the Oka catchment. Compared to the baseline scenario (1970–2000), climate change displayed a decrease in annual rainfall (RCP4.5: 27% and RCP8.5: 28%) and an increase in mean temperature (12% for both emission scenarios). Together with the decrease in rainfall, a decrease in discharge and, consequently, in SPM and POC load was also displayed. In RCP4.5, annual discharge, SPM and POC load decreased by 16%, 68% and 38%, respectively. A slightly larger decrease was found in RCP8.5: 21% for discharge, 70% for SPM load and 41% for POC load. Evapotranspiration (ET) increased relative to the baseline, with a change of 15% (RCP4.5) and 16% (RCP8.5). With regard to forest clearcut scenarios, annual discharge ranged between 3% (Scenario 1) and 15% (Scenario 3). At the same time, ET decreased by between 2% (Scenario 1) and 13% (Scenario 3) relative to the baseline (2001–2012). The model predicted a rise in SPM load of between 19% (Scenario 1) and 106% (Scenario 3). The predicted annual POC load ranged between 9% (Scenario 1) and 47% (Scenario 3). The combination of climate change and forest clearcutting scenarios showed a reduction in discharge, SPM and POC load compared to the baseline. Discharge, SPM and POC load decrease ranged between 2–18%, 30–63% and 12–36% in scenarios 8 and 7, respectively.

Abstract: Water quality is strongly related to a river’s ecosystem composition at landscape scale. Key water/sediment interfaces, referred to here as functional compartments (FCs), are the epilithic biofilm, the fine sediment at the bottom of the river and the macroporous medium or hyporheic zone, which is primarily located in the active channel where subsurface flow occurs. The function of each FC (consumption or production of organic matter and nitrate) at river reach scale was examined through modelling and calibrated within field measurements to quantify the regulation service for water quality improvement. These functions were tested on a river reach of a dominant interface function (DIF) river, the Garonne River in south-west France. It was found that: a) functions differed between the FCs as a result of biotic (organisms involved) and abiotic (hydrological and morphological) conditions, b) functions varied within each FC over time (measured, but not discussed) and c) FCs acted as transient storage zones and contributed to the development of the river’s self-purification capacity. It was concluded that in relation to the concept of river continuum, the upper reaches in the catchment were dominated by epilithic biofilm, where the main function was the production of organic matter (OM) (mean of 0.3 g·m−2·d−1, range from 0.08 to −1.7), the middle course was dominated by the hyporheic zone, where the most important function was to serve as a nitrate sink (−1.25 g·m−2·d−1, range from −45.6 to −0.19), and the downstream parts of the river, whose main function was the degradation of OM within the fine sediment FC (mean of -1000 g·m−2·d−1, range from −960 to −1440). Hence, the morphological heterogeneity of rivers that mimic the natural mosaic of functional compartments with exchanges of water, organic matter and nutrients between compartments could contribute to enhancing their self-purification function and thus to improving water quality and system health. This study is a first step in testing the influence of the different FCs on the water quality regulation service provided by a river reach. The final objective was to be able to upscale the modelling of the different interfaces involved in a watershed’s water quality regulation service. The present study demonstrates the need to take the biophysical diversity of reaches into account in order to accurately model this regulation service. Thus the BIODIF concept of BIO-physical (biological and physical) Diversity for rivers Dominated by river-bed Interface Functions (DIF rivers) was investigated for its ability to identify the theoretical relationships between the structure and the function of regulation of a river.

Abstract: Assessing the water footprint (WF) of crops is key to understanding the agricultural water consumption and improving water use efficiency. This study assessed the WF of wheat and maize in the Haihe River Basin (HRB) of Northern China over the period1956&ndash, 2015, including rain-fed, sufficient, and insufficient irrigation conditions by different irrigation intensity to understand the agricultural water use status. The major findings are as follows: (1) The annual average total WF of wheat and maize production is 20.1 (52% green, 29% blue, and 19% grey) and 15.1 (73% green, 3% blue, and 24% grey) billion m3 year&minus, 1, respectively. The proportion of grey WF is much larger than the world average, (2) Wheat has larger unit WF (1580 m3 t&minus, 1) than maize (1275 m3 t&minus, 1). The unit WF of both wheat and maize shows exponentially decreasing trends, indicating that water use efficiency has been improved. The unit WF is heterogeneous in space, which is larger in Tianjin and Huanghua and smaller in the Southern HRB, (3) Rain-fed crops have the largest unit WF, followed by crops under insufficient and sufficient irrigation conditions for both wheat and maize. To improve the sustainability of water resources, the application of fertilizer must be reduced, and irrigation is an effective way to improve water use efficiency in water-abundant areas.

Abstract: The Poyang Lake ungauged area (PLUA) is an essential hydrology buffer surrounding Poyang Lake. For such a data-scarce area, a novel spatially distributed runoff coefficient model (SDRCM) was developed based on the underlying surface properties using remotely sensed precipitation and reanalysis data after their validation. The runoff simulated by the SDRCM based on both sets of gridded precipitation data were validated in a subbasin where R2 and ENS are larger than 0.87. In addition, a hydrodynamic model was applied to validate the proposed model further by considering the estimated water yield for PLUA that involves boundary inputs, in which the result more closely aligns to the monthly observed discharge. On an annual basis, the PLUA water flow accounted for 12%–19% of the total annual water flow within the watershed, which was approximately equal to the proportion of the area of PLUA in relation to the entire watershed. Finally, the water balance between inflow and outflow of Poyang Lake was investigated, with relative errors observed at the Hukou gauging station all being less than 10% from 1998 to 2009. The proposed model will be helpful in understanding the significance of water yields of such ungauged plain area when evaluating the water balance.

Abstract: Based on statistical analysis, baseflow separation and wavelet analysis, this research was carried out in Shibetsu River Watershed (SRW), Eastern Hokkaido, Japan, to investigate the integrated effects of land use and topography on streamflow response to precipitation. The agriculture-dominated sub-watershed (AW) showed coupled flat topography/agriculture characteristics, the forest-dominated sub-watershed (FW) had coupled steep topography/forest characteristics, and the mixed agriculture-forested sub-watershed (AFW) had mixed flat topography/agriculture and steep topography/forest characteristics. Precipitation variability is characterized by 6-months and 1-year periods. Coupled forest land/steep topography of the FW can increase surface runoff due to forest surface soil water repellency and steep slope, and might receive more external water and higher precipitation that resulted in the highest baseflow and total streamflow compared with other sub-watersheds. Coupled forest land/steep topography can cause higher monthly streamflow variability than coupled agricultural land/flat topography. The FW streamflow is characterized by 3–4 months, 6 months, and 1-year periods. The AW streamflow is only characterized by 3–4 months and 6 months periods. Coupled agricultural land/flat topography produced similar magnitude of baseflow during snowmelt season (March–May) and rainfall season (July–September), which resulted in the losing of annual periodicity in AW streamflow. The coupled forest land/steep topography can increase synchronicity in precipitation and streamflow at annual and monthly scales than coupled agricultural land/flat topography, except in 2007 under wet antecedent conditions when pasture land has lower rainfall interception and lower surface soil infiltration capacity. The coupled forest land/steep topography can increase time lags between precipitation and streamflow compared to coupled agricultural land/flat topography.

Abstract: Numerous studies have pointed out the importance of groundwater and surface water interaction (SW–GW) in a river system. However; those functions have rarely been considered in large scale hydrological models. The SWAT-LUD model has been developed based on the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model; and it integrates a new type of subbasin; which is called subbasin-LU (SL); to represent the floodplain area. New modules representing SW–GW exchanges and shallow aquifer denitrification are developed in the SWAT-LUD model. In this study; the SWAT-LUD model was applied to the middle floodplain area of the Garonne catchment in France. The results showed that the SWAT-LUD model could represent the SW–GW exchange and shallow aquifer denitrification appropriately. An annual 44.1 × 107 m3 of water flowed into the river from the study area; but the annual exchanged water volume was 6.4 × 107 m3; which represented just 1% of the river discharge. A total of 384 tons of N-NO3− (0.023 t·ha−1) was consumed by denitrification in the floodplain shallow aquifer annually. The nitrate concentration (N-NO3−) decrease in the channel was 0.12 mg·L−1; but in the shallow aquifer it reached 11.40 mg·L−1; 8.05 mg·L−1; and 5.41 mg·L−1 in LU1; LU2; and LU3; respectively. Our study reveals that; in the Garonne floodplain; denitrification plays a significant role in the attenuation of nitrate associated with groundwater; but the impacts of denitrification on nitrate associated with river water is much less significant.

Abstract: Prod 2018-56 EA BIOmE AGROSUP; Many studies about climate change impacts assessment are published every year. These studies commonly use a hydroclimatic modelling chain, whose principle is to feed impact models with climate models outputs. An important step in this process is to test the validity of impact models in a climate change context. However, this step is not frequently applied. The aim of this study is to test the robustness of two hydrological models with distinct conceptualizations: a global and empirical model (GR4J) and a semi-distributed and physically-based model (SWAT). They both have been calibrated and validated over climate contrasted periods. Despite a higher decrease of performance between calibration and validation for the GR4J model, both of them show relative robustness. Moreover, the stability of parameters between the two calibration periods shows that their value are not much influenced by the climate of the calibration period, and consequently remains valid during the entire projection period.

Abstract: Climate change is suspected to impact water circulation within the hydrological cycle at catchment scale. A SWAT model approach to assess the evolution of the many hydrological components of the Garonne catchment (Southern France) is deployed in this study. Performance over the calibration period (2000&ndash, 2010) are satisfactory, with Nash&ndash, Sutcliffe ranging from 0.55 to 0.94 or R2 from 0.86 to 0.98. Similar performance values are obtained in validation (1962&ndash, 2000). Water cycle is first analyzed based on past observed climatic data (1962&ndash, 2010) to understand its variations and geographical spread. Comparison is then conducted against the different trends obtained from a climate ensemble over 2010&ndash, 2050. Results show a strong impact on green water, such as a reduction of the soil water content (SWC) and a substantial increase in evapotranspiration (ET) in winter. In summer, however, some part of the watershed faces lower ET fluxes because of a lack of SWC to answer the evapotranspiratory demand, highlighting possible future deficits of green water stocks. Blue water fluxes are found significantly decreasing during summer, when in winter, discharge in the higher part of the watershed is found increasing because of a lower snow stock associated to an increase of liquid precipitation, benefiting surface runoff.

Abstract: Nitrate (NO 3 − ) contamination of freshwater systems is a global concern. In alluvial floodplains, riparian areas have been proven to be efficient in nitrate removal. In this study, a large spatio-temporal dataset collected during one year at monthly time steps within a meander area of the Garonne floodplain (France) was analysed in order to improve the understanding of nitrate dynamic and denitrification process in floodplain areas. The results showed that groundwater NO 3 − concentrations (mean 50 mg NO 3 − L −1 ) were primarily controlled by groundwater dilution with river water (explaining 54% of NO 3 − variance), but also by nitrate removal process identified as denitrification (explaining 14% of NO 3 − variance). Dilution was controlled by hydrological flow paths and residence time linked to river-aquifer exchanges and flood occurrence, while potential denitrification (DEA) was controlled by oxygen, high dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and organic matter content in the sediment (31% of DEA variance). DOC can originate both from the river input and the degradation of organic matter (OM) located in topsoil and sediments of the alluvial plain. In addition, river bank geomorphology appeared to be a key element explaining potential denitrification hot spot locations. Low bankfull height (LBH) areas corresponding to wetlands exhibited higher denitrification rates than high bankfull height (HBH) areas less often flooded. Hydrology determined the timing of denitrification hot moments occurring after flood events. These findings underline the importance of integrating dynamic water interactions between river and aquifer, geomorphology, and dual carbon source (river and sediment) when assessing nitrate dynamics and denitrification patterns in floodplain environments.

Abstract: International audience; Alluvial wetlands provide an important regulating service, the water purification, through the removal of excess nutrients. In those habitats, nitrogen removal by the denitrifying bacterial community is hypothesized to interact with the co-existing invertebrate communities. Yet, few studies reported the infield relationship between invertebrate and microbial communities, where biotic and abiotic interactions are complex. We aimed at exploring the relationship between the invertebrate diversity and microbial denitrification process involved in the water purification service in an alluvial wetland. Subterranean water samplings were seasonally collected from April 2013 to March 2014. Eleven hyporheic habitats were accessed through piezometers dispersed over a meander located in the alluvial plain of the Garonne River (Southwest of France). Physicochemical, hydraulic characteristics, bacterial and invertebrate communities were simultaneously investigated as related factors for potential denitrification rates. Significant spatial gradients of invertebrate diversity, potential denitrification rates, the concentrations of dissolved oxygen, dissolved organic carbon, ammonium and nitrate ions and conductivity were observed in the groundwater of the Monbequi meander. The autumn campaign (9th October), which was performed after a long period of hydrological stability and low discharge, showed a significantly positive linear relationship between invertebrate diversity and potential denitrification rates. An overall significant and positive correlation between invertebrate and bacterial communities’ compositions was found over the four seasons. When each season was considered independently, this relationship was only significant during the autumn campaign. Such observations indicated the positive cross-communities’ interactions that existed between the invertebrate diversity—bacterial communities’ composition and their activity of denitrification. The autumn campaign was suggested to be regarded as a “hot moment” to observe this biodiversity/function relationship, when biological influences on water purification processes were probably not concealed by stronger influences of physical factors. Furthermore, this study showed that optimal potential nitrate removal was supported by a combination of biotic and abiotic conditions: relatively low temperature, oxygen and nitrate concentrations, diverse invertebrate fauna, relatively high dissolved organic carbon and ammonium concentrations.

Abstract: International audience; Exchanges between surface water (SW) and groundwater (GW) are of considerable importance to flood- plain ecosystems and biogeochemical cycles. Flood events in particular are important for riparian water budget and element exchanges and processing. However SW-GW exchanges present complex spatial and temporal patterns and modelling can provide useful knowledge about the processes involved at the scale of the reach and its adjacent floodplain. This study used a physically-based, spatially-distributed mod- elling approach for studying SW-GW exchanges. The modelling in this study is based on the MOHID Land model, combining the modelling of surface water flow in 2D with the Saint-Venant equation and the modelling of unsaturated groundwater flow in 3D with the Richards’ equation. Overbank flow dur- ing floods was also integrated, as well as water exchanges between the two domains across the entire floodplain. Conservative transport simulations were also performed to study and validate the simulation of the mixing between surface water and groundwater. The model was applied to the well-monitored study site of Monbéqui (6.6 km ²) in the Garonne floodplain (south-west France) for a five-month period and was able to represent the hydrology of the study area. Infiltration (SW to GW) and exfiltration (SW to GW) were characterised over the five-month period. Results showed that infiltration and exfiltration exhibited strong spatiotemporal variations, and infiltration from overbank flow accounted for 88% of the total simulated infiltration, corresponding to large flood periods. The results confirmed that overbank flood events played a determinant role in floodplain water budget and SW-GW exchanges compared to smaller (below bankfull) flood events. The impact of floods on water budget appeared to be similar for flood events exceeding a threshold corresponding to the five-year return period event due to the study area’s topography. Simulation of overbank flow during flood events was an important feature in the ac- curate assessment of exchanges between surface water and groundwater in floodplain areas, especially when considering large flood events.

Information on such changes can be derived from fine scale in situ and satellite observations, used in combination with hydrological models. The latter need to account for hydrological changes caused by human activities to correctly estimate the actual water resource. In this study, we consider the catchment area of the Garonne river (in France) to investigate the capabilities of space-based observations and up-to-date hydrological modeling in estimating water resources of a river basin modified by human activities and a changing climate. Using the ISBA--MODCOU and SWAT hydrological models, we find that the water resources of the Garonne basin display a negative climate trend since 1960. The snow component of the two models is validated using the moderate-resolution imaging spectroradiometer snow cover extent climatology. Crop sowing dates based on remote sensing studies are also considered in the validation procedure. Use of this dataset improves the simulated evapotranspiration and river discharge amounts when compared to conventional data. Finally, we investigate the benefit of using the MAELIA multi-agent model that accounts for a realistic agricultural and management scenario. Among other results, we find that changes in crop systems have significant impacts on water uptake for agriculture. This work constitutes a basis for the construction of a future modeling framework of the sociological and hydrological system of the Garonne river region.

Abstract: International audience; La modélisation hydrodynamique est peu utilisée afin de simuler le fonctionnement des milieux humides à l’échelle des plaines alluviales et nécessite souvent de nombreuses données d’entrée souvent difficiles à acquérir. On présente ici un outil de simulation, Accept’Hydro, qui est alimenté par quatre données d’entrée : le modèle numérique d’élévation (IGN), les données piézométriques (banque ADES), l’historique des débits rivières (banque HYDRO), et le réseau hydrographie (BD Carthage). Après l’étape de création automatique du maillage non-uniforme, adapté au domaine étudié, le logiciel génère en sortie les hauteurs d’eau et les vitesses d’écoulement dans la rivière et dans la nappe souterraine, au pas de temps journalier. Les données simulées, sur une période de temps minimal de 10 ans, sont traitées afin de cartographier les milieux humides potentiels en bordure de cours d’eau. De plus, cet outil permet d’intégrer des hypothèses sur l’évolution des débits afin de prendre en compte les modifications dues au change ment climatique, et d’en simuler les impacts sur le fonctionnement hydrologique. On présente ici les résultats d’Accept’Hydro sur la plaine alluviale de la Garonne et ses milieux humides pour la période 2004-2013, dans le département du Tarn-et-Garonne. Dans ce secteur, les simulations prévoient une diminution de la superficie des milieux humides pour l’horizon 2030, en partant d’hypothèses de diminution des débits saisonniers.

Abstract: International audience; As freshwater habitats are among the most endangered, there is an urgent need to identify critical areas for conservation, especially those that are home to endangered species. The Pyrenean desman (Galemys pyrenaicus) is a semi-aquatic mammal whose basic ecological requirements are largely unknown, hindering adequate conservation planning even though it is considered as a threatened species. Species distribution modelling is challenging for freshwater species. Indeed, the complexity of aquatic ecosystems (e.g., linear and hierarchical ordering) must be taken into account as well as imperfect sampling. High-quality and relevant hydrological descriptors should also be used. To understand the influence of environmental covariates on the occupancy and detection of the Pyrenean desman, we combine both a robust sign-survey data set (i.e. with genetic validation ensuring true presence information) and a hydrological model to simulate the flow regime across a whole catchment. Markovian site-occupancy analysis, taking into account sign detection and based on spatially adjacent replicates, indicated a positive influence of heterogeneity of substrate and shelters, and a negative influence of flow variability on Pyrenean desman detection. This valuable information should help to improve monitoring programs for this endangered species. Our results also highlighted a spatially clustered distribution and a positive influence of stream flow and number of tributaries on occupancy. Hence, modifications of flow regime (e.g. hydropower production, irrigation, climate change) and habitat fragmentation appear to be major threats for this species, altering the connectivity between tributaries and the mainstream river as well as between adjacent sub-catchments.

Abstract: Summary Snow is an important hydrological reservoir within the water cycle, particularly when the watershed includes a mountainous area. Modellers often overlook water stocked in snow pack and its influence on water distribution, especially when only some portions of the watershed is snow dominated. Snow is usually considered to improve hydrological modelling statistics, but without any regard for the realism of its representation or its influence on the hydrological cycle. This is all the more true when semi-distributed models are used, often considered inadequate for spatially representing such phenomena. On the other hand, semi-distributed models are being increasingly used to realise water budget assessment at a regional scale and such studies should not be realised without a good representation of the snow pack. Lack of field measurements is also a frequent justification for avoiding validating simulated snow packs. In this study, remote sensing data provided by MODIS is combined with in situ data, enabling the validation of the snow pack simulated by the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT), a semi-distributed, physically-based model, implemented over a partly snow-dominated watershed. Snow simulation was performed without complex algorithms or calibration procedures, using the elevation bands option included in the model and related snow parameters. Representation of snow cover and hydrological simulation were achieved by a standard automatic calibration of the model, over the 2000–2010 period, performed by SWAT-Cup/SUFI2, using six hydrological gauging stations along the fluvial continuum downstream of the snow-dominated area. Results highlight three important points: (i) Set-up of elevation bands over mountainous headwater improved hydrological simulation performance, even well downstream of the snow-dominated area. (ii) SWAT produced a good spatial and temporal representation of the snow cover, using MODIS data, despite a slight overestimation at the end of the snow season on the highest elevation bands. A comparison of the model estimate of snowpack water content with in situ data revealed an underestimation in water content in the lower part of the watershed and a slight overestimation in its upper part. Those errors are linked and originate from difficulties of the model to incorporate very local spatial and temporal variations of the precipitation lapse rate. (iii) Elevation bands brought consistent changes in water distribution within the hydrological cycle of implemented watersheds, which are more in line with expected flow paths.

Abstract: International audience; In agricultural watersheds, pesticide contamination in surface water mostly occurs during stormflow events. When modelling pesticide fate for risks assessment, the application timing input is one of the main uncertainty sources among all the parameters involved in the river network contaminations process. We therefore aimed to assess the sensitivity of the river network pesticide concentration patterns to application timing shifts within a plausible range of application dates, considering two pre-emergence herbicides (metolachlor and aclonifen) characterised by two different octanol/water partition coefficients (Kow). The Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) was applied in the 1110 km2 agricultural watershed of the river Save (south-western France), where wheat, maize, sorghum and sunflower are intensively grown. The pesticide application date was changed within a one-month interval and the pesticide concentration at catchment outlet was simulated from March to June 2010. Total metolachlor concentration prediction could be improved by an application timing shift to 3 days later (Daily R2 = 0.22 and PBIAS = − 57%). By testing the behaviour of the two molecules, it was shown that sorption processes were influencing the control of application timing on the transfer to surface water:metolachlor concentration in the channel depended on both discharge and delay between application date and first stormflow event whereas the transfer of aclonifen depended on rainfall intensity for exportation with suspended sediments through surface runoff. At last, the study discusses the potential implications of the sensitivity in terms of regional agricultural management practice design.

Abstract: National audience; Alluvial wetlands have the functions of hydrological regulation and water purification, but are also of interest for preventing flooding and improving the water quality of the natural environment that serves as a reserve for drinking water and biodiversity. Delimiting these areas is often difficult because it involves both the physical characteristics (topography, river morphology etc.) and hydrodynamic characteristics of the porous medium (permeability etc.) The proposed tool, Accept'Hydro, includes a hydrodynamic simulation of the river, the alluvial aquifer and their interaction, and produces maps of alluvial wetlands with using hydrological criteria. The tool's primary step consists of selecting the studied area using Google Maps, which automatically triggers the generation of a non-uniform mesh covering this area, as well as all the inputs needed for the hydrodynamic simulation to run. The hydrodynamic model based on the equations of Peyrard et al. (2008) allows water levels and flow rates in the river and the alluvial aquifer to be simulated with a non-uniform mesh (cells from 1 to 200 metres per side), combined with a good performance in CPU calculation time. The software program allows the impacts of climate change (changes in hydrology and temperature) and/or anthropogenic change on the hydrodynamic functioning of wetlands to be assessed, and the impact of infrastructure and hydropower facilities on the river to be tested.

Abstract: International audience; Pesticides applied on crops are leached with rainfall to groundwater and surface water. They threat the aquatic environment and may render water unfit for human consumption. Pesticide partitioning is one of the pesticide fate processes in the environment that should be properly formalised in pesticide fate models. Based on the analysis of 7 pesticide molecules (alachlor, atrazine, atrazine's transformation product deethylatrazine or DEA, isoproturon, tebuconazole and trifluralin) sampled from July 2009 to October 2010 at the outlet of the river Save (south-western France), the objectives of this study were (1) to check which of the environmental factors (discharge, pH, concentrations of total suspended matter (TSM), dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and particulate organic carbon (POC) could control the pesticide sorption dynamic, and (2) to establish a relationship between environmental factors, the partition coefficient Kd and the octanol/water distribution coefficient Kow. The comparison of physico-chemical parameters values during low flow and high flow shows that discharge, TSM and POC are the factors most likely controlling the pesticide sorption processes in the Save river network, especially for lower values of TSM (below 13 mg L-1). We therefore express Kd depending on the widely literature-related variable Kow and on the commonly simulated variable TSM concentration. The equation can be implemented in any model describing the fluvial transport and fate of pesticides in both dissolved and sorbed phases, thus, Kd becomes a variable in time and space. The Kd calculation method can be applied to a wide range of catchments and organic contaminants.

Abstract: International audience; The MAELIA project is developing an agent-based modeling and simulation platform to study the environmental, economic and social impacts of various regulations regarding water use and water management in combination with climate change. It is applied to the case of the French Adour-Garonne Basin, which is the most concerned in France by water scarcity during the low-water period. An integrated approach has been chosen to model this social-ecological system: the model combines spatiotemporal models of ecologic (e.g. rainfall and temperature changes, water flow and plant growth) and socio-economic (e.g. farmer decision-making process, management of low-water flow, demography, land use and land cover changes) processes and sub-models of cognitive sharing among agents (e.g. weather forecast, normative constraints on behaviors)

Abstract: Interactions between epilithic biofilm and local hydrodynamics were investigated in an experimental flume. Epilithic biofilm from a natural river was grown over a 41-day period in three sections with different flow velocities (0.10, 0.25 and 0.40 m s −1 noted LV, IV and HV respectively). Friction velocities u * and boundary layer parameters were inferred from PIV measurement in the three sections and related to the biofilm structure. The results show that there were no significant differences in Dry Mass and Ash-Free Dry Mass (g m −2 ) at the end of experiment, but velocity is a selective factor in algal composition and the biofilms' morphology differed according to differences in water velocity. A hierarchical agglomerative cluster analysis (Bray–Curtis distances) and an Indicator Species Analysis ( IndVal ) showed that the indicator taxa were Fragilaria capucina var. mesolepta in the low-velocity ( u *. = 0.010–0.012 m s −1 ), Navicula atomus , Navicula capitatoradiata and Nitzschia frustulum in the intermediate-velocity ( u *. = 0.023–0.030 m s −1 ) and Amphora pediculus , Cymbella proxima , Fragilaria capucina var. vaucheriae and Surirella angusta in the high-velocity ( u *. = 0.033–0.050 m s −1 ) sections. A sloughing test was performed on 40-day-old biofilms in order to study the resistance of epilithic biofilms to higher hydrodynamic regimes. The results showed an inverse relationship between the proportion of detached biomass and the average value of friction velocity during growth. Therefore, water velocity during epilithic biofilm growth conditioned the structure and algal composition of biofilm, as well as its response (ability to resist) to higher shear stresses. Abstract: [Departement_IRSTEA]Eaux [TR1_IRSTEA]BELCA; The role of heterotrophic biofilm of water–sediment interface in detoxification processes was tested in abiotic and biotic conditions under laboratory conditions. Three toxicants, a herbicide (Diuron), a fungicide (Dimethomorph) and an insecticide (Chlorpyrifos-ethyl) have been tested in water percolating into columns reproducing hyporheic sediment. The detoxification processes were tested by comparing the water quality after 18 days of percolation with and without heterotrophic biofilm. Tested concentrations were 30 mg.Lx1 of Diuron diluted in 0.1% dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), 2 mg.Lx1 of Dimethomorph and 0.1 mg.Lx1 of Chlorpyrifos-ethyl. To characterise the detoxification efficiency of the system, we performed genotoxicity bioassays in amphibian larvae and rotifers and measured the respiration and denitrification of sediments. Although the presence of biofilm increased the production of N-(3,4 dichlorophenyl)-N-(methyl)- urea, a metabolite of diuron, the toxicity did not decrease irrespective of the bioassay. In the presence of biofilm, Dimethomorph concentrations decreased compared with abiotic conditions, from 2 mg.Lx1 to 0.4 mg.Lx1 after 18 days of percolation. For both Dimethomorph and Chlorpyrifos-ethyl additions, assessment of detoxification level by the biofilm depended on the test used: detoxification effect was found with amphibian larvae bioassay and no detoxification was observed with the rotifer test. Heterotrophic biofilm exerts a major influence in the biochemical transformation of contaminants such as pesticides, suggesting that the interface between running water and sediment plays a role in self-purification of stream reaches.

Abstract: International audience; High nitrate concentrations in streams have become a widespread problem throughout Europe in recent decades, damaging surface water and groundwater quality. The European Nitrate Directive fixed a potability threshold of 50 mg L−1 for European rivers. The performance of the Soil and Water Assessment Tool model was assessed in the 1110-km2 Save catchment in southwestern France for predicting water discharge and nitrate loads and concentrations at the catchment outlet, considering observed data set uncertainty. Simulated values were compared with intensive and extensive measurement data sets. Daily discharge fitted observations (Nash-Sutcliff e effi ciency coeffi cient = 0.61, R2 = 0.7, and PBIAS = −22%). Nitrate simulation (1998–2010) was within the observed range (PBIAS = 10–21%, considering observed data set uncertainty). Annual nitrate load at the catchment outlet was correlated to the annual water yield at the outlet (R2 = 0.63). Simulated annual catchment nitrate exportation ranged from 21 to 49 kg ha−1 depending on annual hydrological conditions (average, 36 kg ha−1). Exportation rates ranged from 3 to 8% of nitrogen inputs. During floods, 34% of the nitrate load was exported, which represented 18% of the 1998–2010 period. Average daily nitrate concentration at the outlet was 29 mg L−1 (1998–2010), ranging from 0 to 270 mg L−1. Nitrate concentration exceeded the European 50 mg L−1 potability threshold during 244 d between 1998 and 2010. A 20% reduction of nitrogen input reduced crop yield by between 5 and 9% and reduced by 62% the days when the 50 mg L−1 threshold was exceeded.

Abstract: International audience; We studied the effect of point-source and non-point-source pollution on the retention capacity of the stream and its link with the metabolic state (primary production and respiration) and invertebrates assemblages in a third order Mediterranean stream. Two experimental sites were chosen: one in the upper part of the catchment (Monte´gut site) characterized by low concentrations in nitrate and phosphate and one in the lower part of the catchment (Le´zat site) characterized by high nitrate and phosphorus concentrations. Both experimental sites were located on reaches that included a Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP) point nutrient source allowing discussion of the relative effects of point-source and non-point-source nutrients loads on ecosystem function (respiration and uptake rates) and aquatic organism assemblages. NH4 +-N, and PO43x-P uptake rates were determined using solute additions conducted at constant rates (short-term nutrient addition procedure) and NO3 x-N uptake rates were determined using instantaneous solute addition (slug addition procedure). Rates of gross primary production (GPP) and ecosystem respiration were determined using the open system, two-stations diurnal oxygen change method. Benthic invertebrate communities were investigated for species and functional feeding groups diversities measurements. Results show that autotrophy in the river results from nutrients of two distinct origins: point sources for phosphorus (urban area and WWTP) and non-point sources for nitrogen (agricultural zones) with local additions from WWTP inputs. Comparison between the two sites shows that the WWTP did not affect uptake rates, respiration or primary production of the ecosystem in the low-nutrient Monte´gut reach despite increase of invertebrates communities biomass density. Inputs from the WWTP, in the high nitrate and phosphate Le´zat reach, increased respiration, lower benthic biomass and led to changes in the species composition and did not affect uptake rates.

Abstract: International audience; This paper presents a vertically averaged model for studying water and solute exchanges between a large river and its adjacent alluvial aquifer. The hydraulic model couples horizontal 2D Saint Venant equations for river flow and a 2D Dupuit equation for aquifer flow. The dynamic coupling between river and aquifer is provided by continuity of fluxes and water level elevation between the two domains. Equations are solved simultaneously by linking the two hydrological system matrices in a single global matrix in order to ensure the continuity conditions between river and aquifer and to accurately model two-way coupling between these two domains. The model is applied to a large reach (about 36 km2) of the Garonne River (south-western France) and its floodplain, including an instrumented site in a meander. Simulated hydraulic heads are compared with experimental measurements on the Garonne River and aquifer in the floodplain. Model verification includes comparisons for one point sampling date (27 piezometers, 30 March 2000) and for hydraulic heads variations measured continuously over 5 months (5 piezometers, 1 January to 1 June 2000). The model accurately reproduces the strong hydraulic connections between the Garonne River and its aquifer, which are confirmed by the simultaneous variation of the water level in the river and in piezometers located near the river bank. The simulations also confirmed that the model is able to reproduce groundwater flow dynamics during flood events. Given these results, the hydraulic model was coupled with a solute-transport component, based on advection-dispersion equations, to investigate the theoretical dynamics of a conservative tracer over 5 years throughout the 36 km2 reach studied. Meanders were shown to favour exchanges between river and aquifer, and although the tracer was diluted in the river, the contamination moved downstream from the injection plots and affected both river banks.

43. Identification of a minimal adequate model to describe the biomass dynamics of river epilithon

Abstract: International audience; The present study sought to identify a minimal adequate model to describe the biomass dynamics of river epilithon, a functional indicator of river health. Identification of minimal adequate models is particularly necessary in river management, given the reduced number of variables authorities are willing to measure routinely. A model previously developed for epilithon dynamics in a pre-alpine river was applied to epilithon biomasses recorded in contrasting hydrological, trophic and light conditions at various sites in the Agu¨era stream (Spain) over 3 years (11 case studies). A model selection tool, the Akaike Information Criterion (AIC), was used to determine the optimal combination of parameters. In nine of 11 case studies, the best model described epilithon biomass dynamics as the equilibrium between phototrophic growth and discharge-dependent loss and ignored light, temperature and nutrient influences. The best adequate minimal model i.e. the model that is the best trade-off between goodness-of-fit and model simplicity performed best, in years in which clearly contrasting short low and high water periods occurred. During years with less marked hydrodynamics, many other abiotic or biotic processes influenced epilithon biomass dynamics. In these cases, weaker goodness-of-fit had to be accepted to avoid excessively increasing model complexity.

Abstract: International audience; Biogeochemistry of metals in aquatic sediments is strongly influenced by bioturbation. To determine the effects of biological transport on cadmium distribution in freshwater sediments, a bioturbation model is explored that describes the conveyor-belt feeding of tubificid oligochaetes. A stepwise modelling strategy was adopted to constrain the many parameters of the model: (i) the tubificid transport model was first calibrated on four sets of microspheres (inert solid tracer) profiles to constrain tubificid transport; (ii) the resulting transport coefficients were subsequently applied to simulate the distribution of both particulate and dissolved cadmium. Firstly, these simulations provide quantitative insight into the mechanism of tubificid bioturbation. Values of transport coefficients compare very well with the literature, and based on this, a generic model of tubificid bioturbation is proposed. Secondly, the application of the model to cadmium dataset sheds a light on the behaviour of cadmium under tubificid bioturbation. Cadmium enters the sediment in two ways. In one pathway, cadmium enters the sediment in the dissolved phase, is rapidly absorbed onto solid particles, which are then rapidly transported to depth by the tubificids. In the other pathway, cadmium is adsorbed to particles in suspension in the overlying water, which then settle on the sediment surface, and are transported downwards by bioturbation. In a final step, we assessed the optimal model complexity for the present dataset. To this end, the two-phase conveyor-belt model was compared to two simplified versions. A solid phase-only conveyorbelt model also provides good results: the dissolved phase should not be explicitly incorporated because cadmium adsorption is fast and bioirrigation is weak. Yet, a solid phase-only biodiffusive model does not perform adequately, as it does not mechanistically capture the conveyor-belt transport at short time-scales.

Abstract: http://www.iemss.org/sites/iemss2016/; International audience; Data produced by the SeasEra CIGESMED project (Coralligenous based Indicators to evaluate and monitor the "Good Environmental Status" of the MEDiterranean coastal waters) have a high potential to be used by several stakeholders involved in environmental management. A new consortium called IndexMed whose task is to index Mediterranean biodiversity data, makes it possible to build graphs in order to analyse the CIGESMED data and develop new ways for data mining of coralligenous data. This paper presents the prototypes under development that test the ability of graphs dataBases and tools to connect biodiversity objects with non-centralized data. This project explores the ability of two scientific communities to work together. The uses of data from coralligenous habitat demonstrate the prototype functionalities and introduce new perspectives to analyse environmental and societal responses.; Les données produites par le projet SeasEra CIGESMED (Indicateurs d'évaluation des habitats coralligènes et de surveillance du «Bon état écologique» des eaux côtières méditerranéennes) ont un fort potentiel d'utilisation par de nombreux acteurs impliqués dans la gestion environnementale. Un nouveau consortium appelé IndexMed dont la tâche est d'indexer les données sur la biodiversité méditerranéenne, permet de construire des graphes dans l'objectif d'analyser les données CIGESMED et développer de nouvelles méthodes pour l'extraction de données sur les habitats coralligènes. Cet article présente les prototypes en cours de développement qui testent la capacité des bases de données "graphe" et des outils permettant de relier des objets de biodiversité à partir de données non centralisées. Ce projet explore la capacité de deux communautés scientifiques à travailler ensemble. Les utilisations des données provenant de l'habitat coralligène permettent de présenter les fonctionnalités du prototype et proposent de nouvelles approches pour analyser les réponses environnementales et sociétales.
