International audience; As the largest depression in the Tibetan plateau, the Qaidam basin preserves over 10 km thick of Cenozoic sediments. Those sediments represent a unique archive of the evolution of the northern part of the Tibetan plateau and of intracontinental deformation in general. Yet, several critical issues associated with the evolution of the Qaidam basin remain controversial, preventing a full understanding of the evolution of the northern margin of Tibet during the Cenozoic. Here we comprehensively review these issues, synthesize records from structural geology, sedimentology, geochronology, and geophysics, and finally propose a holistic view of the Cenozoic evolution of the Qaidam basin. We infer that: 1) the traditional age model that assigned a Paleocene to Eocene basal age to the Cenozoic strata in the basin seems to fit reasonably well the deformation history obtained from combining growth-strata observations and thermochronology data across the basin; 2) basement-involved faults, with both dip-slip and strike-slip components, developed within the Qaidam basin. In particular, the Neogene initiation of strike-slip faulting along the south-dipping faults that roots into the Eastern Kunlun Shan played an important role in the evolution of the southern Qaidam basin; 3) The Eastern Kunlun Shan was already exhumed during the deposition of the Lulehe Formation, serving as a significant source of clastic material deposited in the Qaidam basin and separating the latter from the Hoh Xil basin to the south. We conclude that the Qaidam basin is a superimposed sedimentary basin that successively experienced flexural subsidence, outwards expansion, isolation and partitioning during the Cenozoic. Finally, the Cenozoic evolution of the basin results from a tight interplay between tectonics and climate.

Soil respiration (Rs), the production of carbon dioxide in soils, increases dramatically from deserts to forested ecosystems. Rs values thus provide a potential tool to identify past ecosystems if recorded in sedimentary archives. Here, we propose a quantitative method to reconstruct past Rs values from paleosols. This method reverses the soil paleobarometer, a proxy that estimates past atmospheric CO2 concentration values (CO2atm) from paleosols while considering a narrow range of variation for Rs. We use past CO2atm values from marine proxies to reconstruct soil respiration from a 20 million year-long isotopic record from northeastern Tibet covering the transition from the Eocene greenhouse to the Oligocene icehouse. We show that Rs dropped at least 4-fold through the transition into the Oligocene icehouse, marking the spread of boreal desert-steppes of Central Asia. We show that increasing aridity and the decline of monsoonal rainfall, in parallel with global cooling, caused the fall of soil respiration. These highly dynamic Rs emphasize the need for a systematic screening of paleosol isotopic data before using the soil paleobarometer to reconstruct CO2atm

International audience; The timing and mechanism of formation of the Tibet Plateau remain elusive, and even the present-day structure of the Tibetan lithosphere is hardly resolved, due to conflicting interpretations of the geophysical data. We show here that significant advances in our understanding of this orogeny could be achieved through a better assessment of the composition and rheological properties of the deepest parts of the Tibetan lithosphere, leading in particular to a reinterpretation of the global tomographic cross sections. We report mantle phlogopite xenocrysts and carbonate-bearing ultramafic cumulates preserved in Eocene potassic rocks from the Eastern Qiangtang terrane, which provide evidence that the lithospheric mantle in Central Tibet was enriched in H 2 O and CO 2 prior to the India-Asia collision. Rheological calculations and numerical modeling suggest that (1) such metasomatized mantle would have been significantly weaker than a normal mantle but buoyant enough to prevent its sinking into the deep mantle; (2) the slow seismic anomalies beneath Central Tibet may image a weakened lithosphere of normal thickness rather than a lithosphere thinned and heated by the convective removal of its lower part; and (3) melting of such soft and fusible metasomatized mantle would have been possible during intracontinental subduction, supporting a subduction origin for the studied Eocene potassic magmatism. These results demonstrate that the inheritance a soft and buoyant precollisional Tibetan lithosphere may have conditioned the growth and the present-day structure of the Tibet Plateau. Plain Language Summary The Tibetan Plateau is the largest relief on the Earth's surface, but also one of the least understood geodynamic phenomena, due to the lack of constrain on its growth evolution and mechanism. Here we have discovered, enclosed in Eocene (35-Ma-old) lavas from Central Tibet, hydrous and carbonated minerals derived from the underlying upper mantle, which reveal an unsuspected abundance of water and CO 2 in this upper mantle. We show that, consequently, the upper mantle beneath Central Tibet has been anomalously weak since before the collision of India with Asia. It was previously thought to have disappeared, foundered in a process called "delamination," but we demonstrate here that this was an artifact: Most of the tibetan mantle is still there, but it is very weak and therefore does not appear on the seismic images. This implies that models expecting the Tibet Plateau to be a result of a delam-ination process are probably wrong; instead, we propose a model in which the weak upper mantle beneath our study area was easily indented by the strong adjacent continental block; this model manages to explain both Eocene magmatism and uplift in our study area.

International audience; The pre-Cenozoic structural pattern of Asia has had a strong impact on the localization and propagation of the Cenozoic deformation that gave birth to the Tibetan Plateau. Northern Tibet represents a key area to decipher the structural and kinematic links between the Mesozoic and Cenozoic evolution of Tibet. Nonetheless, the Mesozoic tectonic setting of the North Tibet and the role that the Paleozoic inherited Altyn Tagh Fault (ATF) shearing zone played in controlling the regional tectonic pattern during the deposition of the Mesozoic strata remain controversial. This study is based on seismic reflections, isopach maps of the Mesozoic strata in the Qaidam Basin, and provenance analysis using detrital zircon geochronological and heavy mineral contents. Seismic reflections and isopach maps demonstrate that sustained strike-slip motion along the ATF during the Early to Late Jurassic induced transtensional basin formation. Further away from the main ATF (eastern parts of the Qilian Shan and the northern Qaidam Basin), transtension also occurred along major faults, although local transpression developed in relay zones. Rotation in the regional stress field induced compression and basin inversion during the Late Jurassic to Early Cretaceous. The Cenozoic sedimentary rocks in these regions display widespread growth strata and angular unconformities characteristic of compression. This is consistent with topographic changes marked by sediment source variation evidenced by detrital zircon geochronology and heavy mineral analysis. We propose that the mechanism driving the Jurassic extension/transtension in North Tibet could be related to far-field effects of subduction processes along the southern margins of the continent.

International audience; Paleogeographic reconstructions of terranes can greatly benefit from the provenance analysis of sediments. A series of Cenozoic basins provide key sedimentary archives for investigating the growth of the Tibetan Plateau, yet the provenance of the sediments in these basins has never been constrained robustly. Here we report sedimentary petrological and detrital zircon geochronological data from the Paleocene-Eocene Nangqian-Xialaxiu and Gongjue basins. Sandstone detrital modes and zircon morphology suggest that the samples collected in these two basins were sourced from recycled orogen. Detrital zircon geochronology indicates that sediments in the Nangqian-Xialaxiu Basin are characterized by two distinct age populations at 220–280 Ma and 405–445 Ma. In contrast, three predominant age populations of 207–256 Ma, 423–445 Ma, and 1851–1868 Ma, and two subordinate age populations of ~50 Ma and ~2500 Ma, are recognized in the Gongjue Basin. Comparison with detrital zircon ages from the surrounding terranes suggests that sediments in the Nangqian-Xialaxiu Basin come from the neighboring thrust belts, whereas sediments from the Gongjue Basin are predominantly derived from the distant Songpan-Ganzi Terrane with minor contribution from the surrounding areas. A three-stage Cenozoic evolution of the eastern Tibetan Plateau is proposed. During the Paleocene, the Nangqian-Xialaxiu Basin appeared as a set of small intermontane sub-basins and received plentiful sediments from the neighboring mountain belts; during the Eocene, the Gongjue Basin kept a relatively low altitude and was a depression at the edge of a proto-Plateau; since the Oligocene, the Tibetan Plateau further uplifted and the marginal Gongjue Basin was involved in the Tibetan interior orogeny, indicating the eastward propagation of the Tibetan Plateau.

Carbonate rocks, widely used for paleomagnetically quantifying the drift history of the Gondwana derived continental blocks of the Tibetan Plateau and evolution of the Paleo/Meso/Neo-Tethys Oceans, are prone to pervasive remagnetization. Identifying remagnetization is difficult because it is commonly undetectable through the classic paleomagnetic field tests. Here we apply comprehensive paleomagnetic, rock magnetic, and petrographic studies to upper Triassic limestones in the eastern Qiangtang block. Our results reveal that detrital/biogenic magnetite, which may carry the primary natural remanent magnetization (NRM), is rarely preserved in these rocks. In contrast, authigenic magnetite and hematite pseudomorphs after pyrite, and monoclinic pyrrhotite record three episodes of remagnetization. The earliest remagnetization was induced by oxidation of early diagenetic pyrite to magnetite, probably related to the collision between the northeastern Tibetan Plateau and the Qiangtang block after closure of the Paleo-Tethys Ocean in the Late Triassic. The second remagnetization, residing in hematite and minor goethite, which is the further subsurface oxidation product of pyrite/magnetite, is possibly related to the development of the localized Cenozoic basins soon after India-Asia collision in the Paleocene. The youngest remagnetization is a combination of thermoviscous and chemical remanent magnetization carried by authigenic magnetite and pyrrhotite, respectively. Our analyses suggest that a high supply of organic carbon during carbonate deposition, prevailing sulfate reducing conditions during early diagenesis, and widespread orogenic fluid migration related to crustal shortening during later diagenesis, have altered the primary remanence of the shallow-water Tethyan carbonate rocks of the Tibetan Plateau. We emphasize that all paleomagnetic results from these rocks must be carefully examined for remagnetization before being used for paleogeographic reconstructions. Future paleomagnetic investigations of the carbonate rocks in orogenic belts should be accompanied by thorough rock magnetic and petrographic studies to determine the origin of the NRM. International audience; The Paleogene Lulehe Formation marks the onset of deposition in the Qaidam basin and preserves evidence of the initial topographic growth of northern Tibet. However, limited outcrops impede understanding of the sedimentary features of the Lulehe Formation as well as the tectonic relationship between the basin and surrounding topography. To fill this gap, we investigated core samples along the basin margin and conducted flexural modeling to estimate the topographic load of the Qilian Shan and Eastern Kunlun Shan during the deposition of the Lulehe Formation. Core samples reveal that the Lulehe Formation mainly consists of distal fluvial to marginal lacustrine deposits and proximal fluvial deposits along the southern margin of the basin while characterized by proximal alluvial fan deposits along the northern margin of the basin. Together with evidence for faulting shown on the seismic profiles, we infer that simultaneous deformation within the Qilian Shan and Altyn Tagh Shan during the Paleogene resulted in accumulation of coarse detrital deposits in the northwestern and northeastern Qaidam basin. The simultaneous deformation within the Altyn Tagh Shan and Qilian Shan since the Paleogene supports the idea that deformation in these two regions is kinematically linked. One‐load and two‐load beam flexural modeling indicate that the topographic load generated by both the Eastern Kunlun Shan and the Qilian Shan is responsible for the subsidence of the Qaidam basin during deposition of the Lulehe Formation. Our results highlight the initial relative high topography in the northern Tibetan plateau during the early Cenozoic

International audience; Understanding the pre-collisional paleogeography in the NE Tibetan plateau provides insights into the growth mechanisms of the northern portion of the plateau in the Cenozoic. We conducted sandstone petrography analysis and determined U-Pb ages for detrital zircons from Cretaceous sandstone from the Yumen Basin and the northern Qilian Shan. Cretaceous strata in the northern Yumen Basin yield a unimodal age population at 290–240 Ma that indicates primary derivation from Bei Shan. Cretaceous strata in the westernmost Yumen Basin contain zircons of 2.6–2.2 Ga, 2.1–1.7 Ga, 1.4–0.7 Ga, 440–380 Ma and 300–230 Ma, suggesting source derivation from both the Qilian Shan and Bei Shan. Within the northern Qilian Shan, Cretaceous strata yield age populations of 2.8–2.3 Ga, 2.1–1.2 Ga, 480–380 Ma and ca. 270 Ma, indicating derivation from the Qilian Shan. Sandstone composition results show that a sample from the northern Qilian Shan contains more lithic fragments and plots in the recycled orogen field of the quartz-feldspar-lithics (QFL) diagram, while samples from Yumen Basin are more quartz-rich and plot close to the continental block field of the QFL diagram. This compositional difference corresponds to source variation, consistent with the detrital zircon record. Combined with existing sedimentology and low-temperature thermochronology datasets, we suggest the presence of Cretaceous topographic relief in the Bei Shan and Qilian Shan prior to India-Asia collision. Considering >300 km post-Cretaceous left-lateral offset along the Altyn Tagh Fault (ATF) and the consistently similar detrital zircon ages spectra of the samples from the Cretaceous to late Oligocene strata in the Yumen Basin, we infer the paleogeography in the NE Tibetan plateau has been similar from the late Cretaceous to the late Oligocene with ATF termination in the western Yumen Basin instead of having been linked to strike-slip faults in the Alxa or other regions to the east since its initiation.

International audience; Mountains grow upward and outward when the accretion of material outpaces its removal. Mountain building is synergistically influenced by geodynamics, internal structures (crustal and lithospheric), and climate. The northward growth of the Qilian Shan, which occupies a transition zone between the ~4500 m high central Tibetan plateau and the adjacent

International audience; Two debated age models, with a basal age of ~50 Ma versus ~30 Ma, proposed for the depositional age of Cenozoic strata within the Qaidam basin result in a diverse understanding of the initial pattern of deformation in the northern Tibetan Plateau. To evaluate these age models, we integrated isopach maps within the basin with published thermochronology data from surrounding ranges to balance the sediments preserved in the basin with materials eroded in the drainage area. When following the traditional ~50 Ma age model, the total volume of material eroded from the surrounding source area is 4.4±0.3 ×105 km3. Using instead the ~30 Ma age model for the basal Lulehe Formation and related revisions to the basin chronology, the volume of eroded material is calculated at 3.5±0.2×105 km3, which provides a better match to the calculate total volume of solid grains that are preserved in the basin (2.8±0.1×105 km3). However, growth strata revealed in seismic profiles along the Southern Qaidam Thrust suggest reverse‐faulting began during the deposition of Oligocene‐Miocene strata. Following the ~50 Ma age model, the onset time of faulting along the Southern Qaidam Thrust is ~35.5 Ma, consistent with previous thermochronology results. If both age models are correct, then this requires a significant time‐transgressive nature to basin fill that allows for older ages of deposition in the southern part of the basin. This study highlights the need for further effort to determine the depositional age of the strata in the southern and western parts of the Qaidam basin.

The Late Mesozoic&ndash, Cenozoic topographic and climate evolution of Central Asia remains highly debated. The final retreat of the proto-Paratethys Sea from the western Tarim Basin is thought to correspond in time with the onset of tectonic uplift in the Pamir, Tian Shan and Altai ranges, as well as with regional aridification. The oxygen and carbon isotope compositions of the sediment deposits in the various Central Asian basins have already been used to decipher both the topographic and climatic changes that occurred in that region during the Cenozoic, generally concentrating on one sedimentary section and/or on a limited time range and either using multiple-type samples including sandstone calcitic cements, marine carbonates, fossils, or paleosols. In order to get a homogeneous dataset, minimizing variations in the isotopic composition of the material depending on its type and/or depositional environment, we selected only calcareous paleosols sampled in several continuous sections covering a wide time range from the Late Jurassic to the Pliocene. Our sampling also covers a wide area encompassing the whole Tian Shan region, which allows detecting regional variations in the &delta, 18O and &delta, 13C values. We show that the influence of the distance to the proto-Paratethys Sea on the paleosol &delta, 18O record was not significant. Besides local factors such as the occurrence of large lakes that can have a significant effect on the isotopic composition of the calcareous paleosols, the long-term evolution of both the &delta, 13C values possibly reflects the hypsometry of the river drainage systems that bring water to the basins. However, as it is commonly accepted that the &delta, 18O of soil carbonates is controlled by the &delta, 18O of in-situ precipitation, this last conclusion remains to be further investigated.

International audience; A Cenozoic structural inversion event from transtension to transpression involving salt tectonics has been uncovered in the Yingxiong Range, the western Qaidam Basin. Seismic reflection data show that there are two common structural styles in the Yingxiong Range: (1) the positive flower structure; (2) the thrust-controlled fold at shallow depth and the positive inverted flower structure at deep levels, which are separated by a salt layer in the upper Xiaganchaigou Formation. The Yingxiong Range experienced a first stage of transtension in the Eocene, induced by the Altyn Tagh Fault, and a second stage of transpression from the early Miocene to present, jointly controlled by the Altyn Tagh and Eastern Kunlun Faults. The Eocene transtension produced numerous NW-striking right-stepping en-échelon transtensional normal faults or fractures in the Yingxiong Range. At the same time, evaporites and mudstone were deposited in the vicinity of these faults. In the early Miocene, the Eocene transtensional normal faults were reactivated in a reverse sense, and the thrust-controlled folds at shallow depth started to form simultaneously. With transpression enhanced in the late Cenozoic, positive flower structures directly formed in places without evaporites. The Cenozoic transtension to transpression inversion of the Yingxiong Range is the result of strike-slip superimposition controlled by the Altyn Tagh and Eastern Kunlun Faults in time and space.

International audience; Understanding the source to sink relationship through time between the Eastern Kunlun Shan, one of the major mountain belts in the northern Tibetan Plateau, and the actively deforming Qaidam Basin to the north has important implications for unravelling the growth history of the Tibetan Plateau. In this study, we first carried out a flexural loading modeling to estimate the topography load of the Qilian Shan and Eastern Kunlun Shan during the deposition of the Lulehe Fm. and compared this result with the basin shape which was obtained from shortening restoration and decompaction by using the drill core, seismic profile and isopach data. In addition, U-Pb dating of detrital zircons from 22 sandstone samples collected from four sections within the southwestern Qaidam Basin is combined with provenance analysis and new seismic profile interpretation to investigate the mountain building of the Eastern Kunlun Shan and its effects on the development of the Qaidam Basin. Flexural loading estimate suggests that the single Qilian Shan failed to produce a sufficient load to create the observed Qaidam basin during the deposition of Lulehe Fm. The topographic load generated by both the Eastern Kunlun Shan to the south and the Qilian Shan-Altyn Tagh Range to the north was responsible for the flexural subsidence of the Qaidam basin during the deposition of Lulehe Fm. The U-Pb age distributions of detrital grains from Lulehe Fm. strata are characterized by a major component of Paleozoic to late Proterozoic ages. Carbonate debris containing foraminifera have been recognized in the Lulehe Fm. conglomerate sequences. We suggest that the Eastern Kunlun Shan was exhumed during the deposition of Lulehe Fm. The southward onlaps strata (Lulehe Fm. to Shangganchaigou Fm.) observed on seismic profiles and the appearance of a Mesozoic component in the detrital zircon age spectra of Xiaganchaigou Fm. to Shangganchaigou Fm. strata indicate that the Qaidam Basin was widening southward during that early Cenozoic period. Well-developed growth strata and the increasing proportion of Mesozoic and Paleozoic U-Pb ages in detrital zircon grains from late Neogene strata demonstrate that the relief of the Eastern Kunlun Shan and Altyn Tagh Range increased, leading to isolation and narrowing of the Qaidam Basin, from Miocene to the present.

Ascertaining the enigmatic characteristics of the crystalline basement of the Qaidam basin, the deepest intracontinental basin yet located in the highest orogenic plateau with the thickest continental crust, has broad implications for the Cenozoic basin evolution, in particular, and intracontinental tectonics of Asia, in general. We carried out a comprehensive investigation on the ages and geochemical-isotopic characteristics of the Qaidam and Suganhu basement rocks obtained from drill-cores. Petrological observations and U-Pb zircon dating (LA-ICP-MS) of granitoid samples from drill cores indicate that Early Neoproterozoic, Early Paleozoic and Late Paleozoic-Mesozoic intrusions are largely represented, suggesting that the Qaidam and Suganhu blocks were involved into three tectono-magmatic episodes. Similar whole-rock geochemistry and Sr–Nd isotopic characteristics between the Early Neoproterozoic granitoids beneath the Qaidam basin and the contemporaneous basement rocks in the surrounding orogenic belts confirm the existence of pervasive Early Neoproterozoic metamorphism and magmatism along the present-day northern Tibetan Plateau. By comparing the trace and rare earth elements patterns as well as the Sr-Nd compositions of the Ordovician arc-related granitoids and Silurian-Devonian post-collisional granitoids beneath the Qaidam and Suganhu basins with the corresponding granitoids from the surrounding orogenic belts, we assert that the Proto-Tethys subduction events that were recorded within the Eastern Kunlun, Altyn Tagh and the Qilian Shan orogenic belts, were different. They generated distinctive subduction-related arc magmas, whereas the closure of the oceanic basins resulted in the amalgamation of the orogenic belts inducing subsequent extensive post-collisional magmatism within the Qaidam block. The widespread Permian and Triassic granitoids beneath the northwestern/northern Qaidam basin mainly involved a lower crust or a crust-mantle source including Mesoproterozoic crust. They demonstrate that the influence of the Paleo-Tethys evolution penetrated the Qaidam block northwards, reaching to the northern edges of the block. We conclude that the Qaidam block is not a craton as typical as the rigid Tarim block, but pertains to a tectono-magmatic rejuvenated craton, which is not mechanically-stronger than its surrounding regions. However, trapped between the lithospheric left lateral strike-slip Altyn Tagh fault system to the northwest and the Qilian Shan transpressional system to the northeast, the Qaidam block forms a relatively stable domain that escaped from significant Cenozoic deformation.

International audience; The Mesozoic–Cenozoic uplift history of South Tianshan has been reconstructed in many ways using thermochronological analyses for the rocks from the eastern Kuqa Depression. The main difference in the reconstructions concerns the existence and importance of Early Cretaceous and Paleogene tectonic activities, but the existence of a Cenozoic differential uplift in the Kuqa Depression remains enigmatic. Here, we present new apatite fission-track ages obtained for 12 sandstone samples from the well-exposed Early Triassic to Quaternary sequence of the Kapushaliang section in the western Kuqa Depression. The results reveal that there were four pulses of tectonic exhumation, which occurred during the Early Cretaceous (peak ages of 112 and 105 Ma), Late Cretaceous (peak age of 67 Ma), Paleocene–Eocene (peak ages at 60, 53, and 36 Ma), and early Oligocene to late Miocene (central ages spanning 30–11 Ma and peak ages of 23 and 14 Ma), respectively. A review of geochronological and geological evidence from both the western and eastern Kuqa Depression is shown as follows. (1) The major exhumation of South TiansShan during the Early Cretaceous was possibly associated with docking of the Lhasa block with the southern margin of the Eurasian plate. (2) The Late Cretaceous uplift of the range occurred diachronically due to the far-field effects of the Kohistan-Dras Arc and Lhasa block accretion. (3) The Paleogene uplift in South Tianshan initially corresponded to the far-field effects of the India–Eurasia collision. (4) The rapid exhumation in late Cenozoic was driven by the continuous far-field effects of the collision between India and Eurasia plates. The apatite fission-track ages of 14–11 Ma suggest that late Cenozoic exhumation in the western Kuqa Depression prevailed during the middle to late Miocene, markedly later than the late Oligocene to early Miocene activity in the eastern segment. It can be hypothesized that a possible differential uplift in time occurred in the Kuqa Depression during the late Cenozoic.

Marking the northern boundary of the Tibetan plateau, the Altyn Tagh fault plays a crucial role in accommodating the Cenozoic crustal deformation affecting the plateau. However, its initiation time and amount of offset are still controversial despite being key information for the understanding of Tibet evolution. In this study, we present 1122 single LA-ICP-MS detrital zircon U–Pb ages obtained from 11 Mesozoic to Cenozoic sandstone samples, collected along two sections in the northwestern Qaidam basin (Eboliang and Huatugou). These data are combined with new3D seismic reflection profiles to demonstrate that: (1) fromthe Paleocene to early Eocene, the Eboliang section was approximately located near the present position of Anxi, 360 ± 40 km southwest from its current location along the Altyn Tagh fault, and sediments were mainly derived from the Altyn Tagh Range. At the same period, the Huatugou section was approximately located near the present position of Tula, ca. 360 km southwest from its current location along the Altyn Tagh fault, and the Eastern Kunlun Range represented a significant sediment source. (2) Left-lateral strike-slip movement along the Altyn Tagh fault initiated during the early-middle Eocene, resulting in northeastward displacement of the two sections. (3) By early Miocene, the intensive deformation within the Altyn Tagh Range and northwestern Qaidam basin strongly modified the drainage system, preventing the materials derived fromthe Altyn Tagh Range to reach the Eboliang and the Huatugou sections. The post-Oligocene clastic material in the western Qaidam basin is generally derived fromlocal sources and recycling of the deformed Paleocene to Oligocene strata. From these data, we suggest enhanced tectonic activity within the Altyn Tagh Range and northwestern Qaidam basin since Miocene time, and propose an earlymiddle Eocene initiation of left-lateral strike-slip faulting leading to a 360 ± 40 km offset along the Altyn Tagh fault

International audience; The lithospheric strike-slip Altyn Tagh Fault has accommodated hundreds of kilometers of displacement between the Qaidam and Tarim blocks since its Eocene reactivation. However, the way the deformation is accommodated in the Qilian Shan and further east remains uncertain. Based on 360 km of northeastward migration of the relatively rigid Qaidam block along the Altyn Tagh Fault and 3D isovolumetric balancing of the crustal deformation within the Altyn Tagh Fault–Qilian Shan system, we demonstrate that 250 ± 28 km (43.8~49.4%) of N20E directed crustal shortening and an additional ~250 to ~370 km of eastward motion of the Qilian Shan crust must be accounted for by strike-slip faulting in the Qilian Shan and crustal thickening in the Qinling area, as well as by extension in the adjoining North China block graben systems

Situated in the southwest of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB), the South Tian Shan (STS) Block is a key area for understanding the final accretion of the CAOB. A suite of volcanic rocks interbedded with continental sediments from the Xiaotikanlike Formation lies along the southwestern edge of the Tian Shan orogen. Laser-ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometer U–Pb dating provided a crystallization age of 295.0 ± 2.8 Ma (MSWD = 1.3), suggesting an Early Permian magmatic event. The volcanic rocks show a variable composition, with dominant rhyolites and dacites, subordinate basaltic andesites and few basalts. The felsic rocks are enriched in K and exhibit remarkably negative anomalies in Ba, Sr, Eu, P and Ti. These anomalies associated with their high negative !Nd(t) values and old Nd model ages suggest that they are most likely sourced from ancient lower crustal rocks. The mafic rocks are characterized by high Mg#, Cr, Ni contents, negative Nb, Ta anomalies and pronounced enrichment in light rare earth elements as well as mild enrichment in large-ion lithophile elements. The mafic rocks are thus inferred to derive from enriched subcontinental lithospheric mantle. The petrographic and geochemical characteristics of the Xiaotikanlike Formation volcanic rocks indicate that they were generated under a post-collisional regime. Therefore, the final collision between the Tarim Craton and the Kazakhstan– Yili terrane took place before Early Permian, most probably at Late Carboniferous. Differing from other tectonic units of the CAOB, the recycling of ancient lithospheric crust played a significant role in the continental growth of the STS Block.

International audience; A vast shallow epicontinental sea extended across Eurasia and was well-connected to the Western Tethys before it retreated westward and became isolated as the Paratethys Sea. However, the palaeogeography and the timing of this westward retreat are too poorly constrained to determine potential wider environmental impacts, let alone understanding underlying mechanisms of the retreat such as global eustasy and tectonism associated with the Indo-Asia collision. Here, an improved chronostratigraphic and palaeogeographic framework is provided for the onset of the proto-Paratethys Sea retreat at its easternmost extent in the Tarim Basin in western China is provided. Five different third-order sea-level cycles can be recognised from the Cretaceous-Palaeogene sedimentary record in the Tarim Basin, of which the last two stepped successively westwards as the sea retreated after the maximum third incursion. New biostratigraphic data from the fourth and fifth incursions at the westernmost margin of the Tarim Basin are compared to our recent integrated bio-magneto-stratigraphic results on the fourth incursion near the palaeodepocentre in the south-western part of the basin. While the fourth incursion extended throughout the basin and retreated at ~ 41 Ma (base C18r), the last and fifth incursion is restricted to the westernmost margin and its marine deposits are assigned a latest Bartonian-early Priabonian age from ~ 38.0 to ~ 36.7 Ma (near top C17n.2n to base C16n.2n). Similar to the fourth, the fossil assemblages of the fifth incursion are indicative of shallow marine, near-shore conditions and their widespread distribution across Eurasia suggests that the marine connection to the Western Tethys was maintained. The lack of diachronicity of the fourth incursion between the studied sections across the southwest Tarim Basin suggests that the sea entered and withdrew relatively rapidly, as can be expected in the case of eustatic control on a shallow epicontinental basin. However, the westward palaeogeographic step between the fourth and fifth incursions separated by several millions of years rather suggests the combined long-term effect of tectonism, possibly associated with early uplift of the Pamir-Kunlun Shan thrust belt. The fourth and fifth regressions are time-equivalent with significant aridification steps recorded in the Asian interior, thus supporting climate modelling results showing that the stepwise sea retreat from Central Asia amplified the aridification of the Asian interior.

The Tarim Basin in western China formed the easternmost margin of a shallow epicontinental sea that extended across Eurasia and was well connected to the western Tethys during the Paleogene. Climate modelling studies suggest that the westward retreat of this sea from Central Asia may have been as important as the Tibetan Plateau uplift in forcing aridification and monsoon intensification in the Asian continental interior due to the redistribution of the land-sea thermal contrast. However, testing of this hypothesis is hindered by poor constraints on the timing and precise palaeogeographic dynamics of the retreat. Here, we present an improved integrated bio- and magnetostratigraphic chronological framework of the previously studied marine to continental transition in the southwest Tarim Basin along the Pamir and West Kunlun Shan, allowing us to better constrain its timing, cause and palaeoenvironmental impact. The sea retreat is assigned a latest Lutetian–earliest Bartonian age (ca. 41 Ma; correlation of the last marine sediments to calcareous nannofossil Zone CP14 and correlation of the first continental red beds to the base of magnetochron C18r). Higher up in the continental deposits, a major hiatus includes the Eocene–Oligocene transition (ca. 34 Ma). This suggests the Tarim Basin was hydrologically connected to the Tethyan marine Realm until at least the earliest Oligocene and had not yet been closed by uplift of the Pamir–Kunlun orogenic system. The westward sea retreat at ca. 41 Ma and the disconformity at the Eocene–Oligocene transition are both time-equivalent with reported Asian aridification steps, suggesting that, consistent with climate modelling results, the sea acted as an important moisture source for the Asian continental interior.

International audience; Since the Late Cenozoic, the Tian Shan area, as for most ranges in continental Asia is rejuvenated by the far-field effects of the India-Asia collision. However, the tectonic processes that affected the area prior to the Cenozoic are still poorly known, especially in the South Tian Shan block. An extensive record of this earlier tectonic history is provided by the thick Paleozoic to Mesozoic sedimentary sequences preserved in the Kapushaliang and Heiyingshan sections in southern Tian Shan. U-Pb (LA-ICP-MS) dating of detrital zircons from eight sandstone samples from these two close sections ranging in age from latest Paleozoic to Early Mesozoic is used to investigate changes in sediment provenance through time and to correlate them with major tectonic phases in the range. The results show that the detrital zircons are mostly magmatic in origin, with some minor metamorphic input. The U-Pb detrital zircon ages range widely from 224 to 3320 Ma and can be statistically divided into four main groups: 224-250 Ma (4%), 251-380 Ma (40%), 380-520 Ma (35%) and 545-3320 Ma (21%). Data analysis associated to already published sedimentary and geochronology information indicate that the zircons were largely derived from the Tian Shan area to the north since the Permian initiation of the basin. From latest Paleozoic to Early Mesozoic, the sediment provenance and basin-range pattern evolution of South Tian Shan can be generally divided into two stages: (1) during Early Permian, the South Tian Shan basin was in a half-graben most probably post-orogenic extensional context. (2) From Late Permian to Early Jurassic times, the South Tian Shan became a passively subsiding basin, with a geographically wider source area characterized by a relatively low topography.

International audience; This paper describes an olistostrome formation and accompanied bimodal volcanic rocks occurring in the Baiyanggou area, south of Bogda Shan. The main lithotectonic units consist of olistostrome, volcanic rocks and turbidite. The olistostrome is tectonically underlain by Upper Carboniferous limestone and sandstone along a NEE-trending detachment fault. Paleo-growth fault is locally observed. The olistostrome unit includes plenty of blocks of limestone, sandstone, rhyolite and volcaniclastic rocks, and a matrix of graywacke. Limestone blocks are dated as Pennsylvanian-Bashkirian in age by the coral and brachiopod fossils that are extensively recognized in the Upper Carboniferous strata. The volcanic unit consists of pillowed and massive basalt and rhyolite, the latter occur as an 8- to 10-meter-thick layer above the olistostrome unit. The turbidite unit is mainly composed of chert, siliceous mudstone and sandstone, within which the Bouma sequence can be locally recognized. Meter-wide gabbro and diabase dykes intrude these three units. Geochemically, rhyolites are characterized by high ACNK value of >1.1, depletion of Ba, Nb and Sm, and enrichment in Rb, Th and Zr. Basaltic rocks are rich in K2O, they show a LREE-enriched pattern and depletion in Ba, Nb and Zr, and enrichment in Ti, Ce and Hf, similar to continental rift-type tholeiite series. A gabbro porphyrite intruding the olistostrome was dated at 288 ± 3 Ma by a sensitive high-resolution ion microprobe (SHRIMP) zircon U-Pb method, and a rhyolite at 297 ± 2 Ma by a laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (LA-ICPMS) zircon U-Pb method. The Baiyanggou olistostrome and accompanying bimodal volcanic series are linked to an extensional setting that developed in the south of the Bogda Shan. Several lines of evidence, e.g. occurrence of large-scale strike-slip shear zones, large number of mantle-derived magmatic rocks and available geochronological data, demonstrate a significant geodynamic change from convergence to extension in the Chinese Tianshan belt, even in the whole Central Asian Orogenic Belt. The extension in the Chinese Tianshan belt is initiated at ca. 300 Ma, i.e. around Carboniferous-Permian boundary times, and the peak period of intra-plate magmatism occurred in the interval of 300-250 Ma.

International audience; The Paleogene sediments of the southwest Tarim Basin along the West Kunlun Shan in western China include the remnants of the easternmost extent of a large epicontinental sea. This shallow sea once extended across the Eurasian continent before it retreated westward and eventually separated as the Paratethys Sea. Climate modeling results suggest that this sea retreat is an equally important forcing mechanism as the Tibetan plateau uplift in the aridification of the Asian continental interior and the intensification of the Asian monsoon system. The age and paleogeography of the retreat are poorly constrained, hindering the understanding of its cause and paleoenvironmental impacts. This study reports litho- and biostratigraphic results from two sections recording the last major regression out of the Tarim Basin that is expressed by a regional transition from marine clastics and limestones to continental red-beds. Rich micro- and macrofossil assemblages, including benthic foraminifera, ostracods, bivalves, calcareous nannofossils and organic walled dinoflagellate cysts (dinocysts), indicate a shallow, proximal and marine environment. Strong similarity to assemblages known from Central Asia and Europe confirms that surface­ocean connections extended across Eurasia from the Tarim Basin to the western Tethys during the latest Eocene. Moreover, the recovered fossil associations date the last marine sediments as earliest Priabonian in age (~37 Ma; overlap between dinoflagellate Mps Interval Zone and calcareous nannofossil Zone CP 14). The retreat of the sea from the Tarim Basin is timeequivalent with the sea level lowstand at the Bartonian­Priabonian boundary but pre-dates both the Oligocene­Miocene regional uplift of the Pamir mountains and Kunlun Shan and the major eustatic sea-level falls of the Eocene­Oligocene Transition (~34 Ma) and mid-Oligocene (~30 Ma), which are usually held responsible for the sea retreat. Furthermore, a concomitant and significant aridification step occurs at ~36.6 Ma (top of chron C17n.1n) as recorded by regional sedimentary records of the Xining Basin along the northeastern Tibetan Plateau, suggesting that the Tarim Sea served as a significant moisture contributor for the Asian interior.

The Qaidam basin, located within the northern Tibetan plateau, is the deepest intracontinental basin, yet located in the highest plateau with the thickest continental crust. Understanding how this peculiar basin developed has broad implications for the Tibetan geology in particular and for continental tectonics in general. Many approaches have been used to decipher the tectonic and topographic history of that region, however, the initial topography of the area now represented by the northern Tibetan plateau, as well as the early stages of development of the present day topography remain poorly constrained and highly debated. In order to better understand the Cenozoic evolution of the Qaidam basin and its surrounding regions (including Eastern Kunlun Range to the south, Altyn Tagh Range to the northwest, and Qilian Shan to the northeast), four critical issues are addressed in this thesis: 1) the Cenozoic joint tectonic evolution of the Qaidam basin and the Eastern Kunlun Range; 2) the interplay between the sedimentation within the Qaidam basin and the active tectonics within the Altyn Tagh Range; 3) a quantitative estimate of the lateral extrusion along the Altyn Tagh Fault-Qilian Shan tectonic system; 4) the nature and classification of the Qaidam basin. I suggest that the SW Qaidam basin has been bordered by a series of strike-slip faults to the south since the Early Miocene, rather than, as previously suggested by a continuous northward or southward thrusting system. Based on U-Pb dating (LA-ICP-MS) of detrital zircons collected from 4 sections (Paleocene to Holocene) within the southwestern Qaidam basin combined with provenance analysis and new seismic profile interpretation, I demonstrated that the Eastern Kunlun Range was already exhumed prior to the Paleocene. I show that the Qaidam basin was widening southward during thet early Cenozoic period (Paleocene to Oligocene). From Oligocene the relief of the Eastern Kunlun and Altyn Tagh ranges increased, leading to isolation and narrowing of the Qaidam basin from Miocene to the present. Along the northern edge of the basin, I identified the Tula-Huatugou and Anxi-Eboliang regions as residual parts of the original Qaidam basin. I suggest that the Altyn Tagh Fault has experienced a total of ~360 km of displacement since its Early Eocene initiation. Based on this ~360 km northeastward migration of the relatively rigid Qaidam block along the Altyn Tagh Fault and 3D isovolumetric balance of the crustal deformation within the Altyn Tagh Fault – Qilian Shan system, I demonstrate that 250 ± 28 km (43.8~49.4 %) of N20E directed crustal shortening and an additional ~250 to ~370 km of eastward motion of the Qilian Shan crust must be accounted for by strike-slip faulting in the Qilian Shan and crustal thickening in the Qinling area, as well as extension in the adjoining North China block graben systems., Le basin du Qaidam, situé sur la bordure nord du Plateau Tibétain est unique au monde en ce qu’il représente le bassin intracontinental le plus profond bien que situé sur le plus haut plateau et la plus épaisse croute continentale actuels. Comprendre le développement et l’évolution de ce bassin en lien avec la collision Inde-Asie a des implications multiples pour la géologie du Tibet en particulier et la tectonique continentale en général. De nombreuses études incluant de la thermochronologie, de la paléobotanique, du paléomagnétisme, de la paléoaltimétrie, de la sédimentologie et de la géologie structurale se sont intéressées à l’histoire tectonique et topographique de cette région. Toutefois la topographie initiale de la région actuellement représentée par le Plateau Tibétain ainsi que les premiers stades de développement du plateau restent méconnus et très débattus. Les travaux présentés ici sont basés sur des données de terrain, de sismique 2D et 3D, de géochimie, de géochronologie détritique, de sédimentologie et d’analyse d’images satellitaires. Ils décrivent: 1) l’évolution cénozoïque conjointe du bassin du Qaidam et de la chaine des Eastern Kunlun ; 2) les relations entre la sédimentation dans le bassin du Qaidam et la tectonique le long de la faille de l’Altyn Tagh ; 3) une estimation quantitative de l’extrusion latérale du nord Tibet les long du système Altyn Tagh – Qilian Shan ; 4) la nature et la typologie du bassin du Qaidam. Je démontre que la chaîne du Kunlun formait un relief en érosion au Paléocène et que la zone de dépôt du bassin du Qaidam s’est élargie vers le sud jusqu’à l’Oligocène. Dès le Miocène inférieur le SO du bassin du Qaidam était limité par un système tectonique décrochant. L’accroissement du relief dans les chaines du Kunlun et de l’Altyn Tagh entraine alors un isolement puis un rétrécissement du bassin. Je suggère que la faille de l’Altyn Tagh qui forme la bordure nord du Plateau, a accommodé environs 360 km de déplacement depuis sont initiation au Miocène inférieur. Cette déformation est prise en compte par du décrochement et de l’épaississement dans les Qilian Shan, de l’épaississement crustal dans les Qinling et de l’extension dans le système de grabens de Chine du Nord. Enfin, je conclu que le bassin du Qaidam est contrôlé conjointement par les failles décrochantes de l’Altyn Tagh et du Kunlun Est. La superposition dans le temps et l’espace des effets de ces deux décrochements majeurs durant le Cénozoïque a contrôlé l’évolution du bassin et la répartition des réserves d’huile et de gaz.
