Abstract: International audience; Serverless is a trending service model for cloud computing. It shifts a lot of the complexity from customers to service providers. However, current serverless platforms mostly consider the provider's infrastructure as homogeneous, as well as the users' requests. This limits possibilities for the provider to leverage heterogeneity in their infrastructure to improve function response time and reduce energy consumption. We propose a heterogeneity-aware serverless orchestrator for private clouds that consists of two components: the autoscaler allocates heterogeneous hardware resources (CPUs, GPUs, FPGAs) for function replicas, while the scheduler maps function executions to these replicas. Our objective is to guarantee function response time, while enabling the provider to reduce resource usage and energy consumption. This work considers a case study for a deepfake detection application relying on CNN inference. We devised a simulation environment that implements our model and a baseline Knative orchestrator, and evaluated both policies with regard to consolidation of tasks, energy consumption and SLA penalties. Experimental results show that our platform yields substantial gains for all those metrics, with an average of 35% less energy consumed for function executions while consolidating tasks on less than 40% of the infrastructure's nodes, and more than 60% less SLA violations.

Abstract: International audience; Query processing on cloud database systems is a challenging problem due to the dynamic cloud environment. In cloud database systems, besides query execution time, users also consider the monetary cost to be paid to the cloud provider for executing queries. Moreover, a Service Level Agreement (SLA) is signed between users and cloud providers before any service is provided. Thus, from the profit-oriented perspective for the cloud providers, query re-optimization is multi-objective optimization that minimizes not only query execution time and monetary cost but also SLA violations. In this paper, we introduce ReOptRL and SLAReOptRL, two novel query re-optimization algorithms based on deep reinforcement learning. Experiments show that both algorithms improve query execution time and query execution monetary cost by 50% over existing algorithms, and SLAReOptRL has the lowest SLA violation rate among all the algorithms.

Abstract: One of the main objectives of Cloud Providers (CP) is to guarantee the Service-Level Agreement (SLA) of customers while reducing operating costs. To achieve this goal, CPs have built large-scale datacenters. This leads, however, to underutilized resources and an increase in costs. A way to improve the utilization of resources is to reclaim the unused parts and resell them at a lower price. Providing SLA guarantees to customers on reclaimed resources is a challenge due to their high volatility. Some state-of-the-art solutions consider keeping a proportion of resources free to absorb sudden variation in workloads. Others consider stable resources on top of the volatile ones to fill in for the lost resources. However, these strategies either reduce the amount of reclaimable resources or operate on less volatile ones such as Amazon Spot instance. In this paper, we proposed RISCLESS, a Reinforcement Learning strategy to exploit unused Cloud resources. Our approach consists of using a small proportion of stable on-demand resources alongside the ephemeral ones in order to guarantee customers SLA and reduce the overall costs. The approach decides when and how much stable resources to allocate in order to fulfill customers' demands. RISCLESS improved the CPs' profits by an average of 15.9% compared to state-of-the-art strategies. It also reduced the SLA violation time by an average of 36.7% while increasing the amount of used ephemeral resources by 19.5% on average

Abstract: International audience; During the last 10 years, the volume of global data has risen more than tenfold. The commercial rise of cloud computing eased the process of storing, processing and managing big data. Recently, the cloud evolved with the emergence of serverless computing platforms that offer an even more abstracted service model. The elasticity of cloud computing creates significant optimization problems, which can be tackled either with a single objective, or as multi-objective opimization problems (MOO). When it comes to data management, the two main MOO problems in a cloud computing environment are query optimization and task scheduling. Some of the techniques used for solving MOO problems in the cloud are the weighted sum model, mathematical-programming based algorithms and genetic algorithms. We propose the presentation of a tutorial that will underline the main MOO problems of a cloud computing environment in regards to data management, and evaluate the use of serverless computing for such problems. The tutorial will offer the audience a better understanding of current MOO challenges and applications in the cloud, while also giving them an overview of different solutions to such problems and the techniques that can be used for solving them. * The supervisors' names are included in alphabetical order, both contributed equally.

Abstract: International audience; Performing non-aggregate range queries over encrypted data stored on untrusted clouds has been considered by a large body of work over the last years. However, prior schemes mainly concentrate on improving query performance while the scalability dimension still remains challenging. Due to heavily pre-processing incoming data at a trusted component such as encrypting data and building secure indexes, existing solutions cannot provide a satisfactory ingestion throughput. In this paper, we overcome this limitation by introducing a framework for secure range query processing, FRESQUE, that enables a scalable consumption throughput while still maintaining strong privacy protection for outsourced data. Our experiments on real-world datasets show that FRESQUE can support over 160 thousand record insertions in a second, when running on a 12-computing node cluster. It also significantly outperforms one of the most efficient schemes such as PINED-RQ++ by 43 times on ingestion throughput.

Abstract: International audience; Data sharing is important in the medical domain. Sharing data allows large-scale analysis with many data sources to provide more accurate results (especially in the case of rare diseases with small local datasets). Cloud federations can leverage sharing medical data stored in different cloud platforms, such as Amazon, Microsoft, Google Cloud, etc. They also enable access to distributed data of patients. The pay-as-yougo model in cloud federations raises important issues of Multi-Objective Optimization Problems (MOOP) related to users’ preferences, such as response time, money, quality, etc. However, optimizing a query in a cloud federation is complex with increasing the variety, especially due to a wide range of communications and pricing models. The variety of virtual machines configuration also leverages the high complexity in generating the space of candidate solutions. Indeed, in such a context, it is difficult to provide accurate estimations and optimal solutions to make relevant decisions. The first challenge is how to estimate accurate parameter values for MOOPs without precise knowledge of the execution environment in a cloud federation consisting of different sites. To address the accurate estimation of parameter values problem, we present the Dynamic Regression Algorithm (DREAM), which can provide accurate estimations in a cloud federation with limited historical data. DREAM focuses on reducing the size of historical data while maintaining the estimation accuracy. The second challenge is how to find an approximate optimal solution in MOOPs using an efficient Multi-Objective Optimization algorithm. To address the problem of finding an approximate optimal solution, we present Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithms based on Grid partitioning (NSGA-G) for MOOPs. The proposed algorithm is integrated into the Intelligent Resource Scheduler, a solution for heterogeneous databases, to solve MOQP in cloud federations. We validate our algorithms with experiments on a decision support benchmark (TPC-H benchmark).

Abstract: International audience; Cloud-based systems enable to manage ever-increasing medical data. The Digital Imaging and Communication in Medicine (DI-COM) standard has been widely accepted to store and transfer the medical data, which uses single (row/column) or hybrid data storage technique (row-column). In particular, hybrid systems leverage the advantages of both techniques and allow to take into account various kinds of queries from full records retrieval (online transaction processing) to analytics (online analytical processing) queries. Additionally, the pay-as-you-go model and elasticity of cloud computing raise an important issue regarding to Multiple Objective Optimization (MOO) to find a data configuration according to users preferences such as storage space, processing response time, monetary cost, quality, etc. In such a context, the considerable space of solutions in MOO leads to generation of Pareto-optimal front with high complexity. Pareto-dominated based Multiple Objective Evolutionary Algorithms are often used as an alternative solution, e.g., Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithms (NSGA) which provide less computational complexity. This paper presents NSGA-G, an NSGA based on Grid Partitioning to improve the complexity and quality of current NSGAs and to obtain efficient storage and querying of DICOM hybrid data. Experimental results on DTLZ test problems [10] and DICOM hybrid data prove the relevance of the proposed algorithm.

Abstract: International audience; Many of the existing cloud database query optimization algorithms target reducing the monetary cost paid to cloud service providers in addition to query response time. These query optimization algorithms rely on an accurate cost estimation so that the optimal query execution plan (QEP) is selected. The cloud environment is dynamic, meaning the hardware configuration, data usage, and workload allocations are continuously changing. These dynamic changes make an accurate query cost estimation difficult to obtain. Concurrently, the query execution plan must be adjusted automatically to address these changes. In order to optimize the QEP with a more accurate cost estimation, the query needs to be optimized multiple times during execution. On top of this, the most updated estimation should be used for each optimization. However, issues arise when deciding to pause the execution for minimum overhead. In this paper, we present our vision of a method that uses machine learning techniques to predict the best timings for optimization during execution.

Abstract: International audience; With the explosive growth of the Internet Of Things (IOTs), emergency security monitoring becomes essential to efficiently manage an enormous amount of information from heterogeneous systems. In concern of increasing the performance for the sequence of online queries on long-term historical data, query caching with semantic organization, called Semantic Query Caching or Semantic Caching (SC), can play a vital role. SC is implemented mostly in software perspective without providing a generic description of modules or cache services in the given context. Hardware acceleration with FPGA opens new research directions to achieve better performance for SC. Hence, our work aims to propose a flexible, adaptable, and tunable ModulAr Semantic CAching fRAmework (MASCARA) towards FPGA acceleration for fast and accurate massive logs processing applications.

Abstract: International audience; Privacy is a major concern in cloud computing since clouds are considered as untrusted environments. In this study, we address the problem of privacy-preserving range query processing on clouds. Several solutions have been proposed in this line of work, however, they become inefficient or impractical for many monitoring applications, including real-time monitoring and predicting the spatial spread of seasonal epidemics (e.g., H1N1 influenza). In this case, a system often confronts a high rate of incoming data. Prior schemes may thus suffer from potential performance issues, e.g., overload or bottleneck. In this paper, we introduce an extension of PINED-RQ to address these limitations. We also demonstrate experimentally that our solution outperforms PINED-RQ.

Abstract: International audience; Time-series analysis is a very challenging concept in Data Science for companies and industries. Harvesting prices of agricultural production (e.g. vegetable, fruit, milk...) as time series is key to operating reliable dish cost prediction at scale to ensure for example that the market price is valid. In this paper, we describe initial stakeholder needs, the service and engineering contexts in which the challenge of time-serie harvesting and management arose, and theoretical and architectural choices we made to implement a solution of historical food prices to demonstrate the feasibility. For this, we use scrappers through the TOR network. We also propose a knowledge map approach to make the data accessible to any type of users.

Abstract: International audience; Security monitoring is one subdomain of cybersecurity which aims to guarantee the safety of systems, continuously monitoring unusual events. The development of Internet Of Things leads to huge amounts of information, being heterogeneous and requiring to be efficiently managed. Cloud Computing provides software and hardware resources for large scale data management. However, performances for sequences of on-line queries on long term historical data may be not compatible with the emergency security monitoring. This work aims to address this problem by proposing a semantic caching framework and its application to acceleration hardware with FPGA for fast-and accurate-enough logs processing for various data stores and execution engines.

Abstract: International audience; Smart Cities is a worldwide initiative leading to better exploit the resources in a city in order to offer higher level services to people. In this context, urban computing is a process of acquisition, integration, and analysis of big and heterogeneous data generated by a diversity of sources in urban spaces, such as sensors, traffic devices, vehicles, buildings, and humans, to tackle the major issues that cities face, e.g. air pollution , increased energy consumption and traffic congestion. The majority of these information can be represented as graphs, such as the transportation network, in which places (nodes) are connected by some form of public transportation (edges). A vision of the " city of the future " , or even the city of the present, rests on the integration of science and technology through information systems. This vision requires a rethinking of the relationships between technology, government, city managers, business, academia and the research community. This position paper presents our views towards developing techniques for querying and evolving graph-modeled datasets based on user-defined constraints. Our focus is to show how these techniques can be applied to effectively retrieve urban data and have automated mechanisms that guarantee data consistency.

In most cases, the distribution of the pattern mining process generates a loss of information in the output results. Reducing this loss may affect the performance of the distributed approach and thus, the monetary cost when using cloud environments. In this context, cost models are needed to help selecting the best parameters of the used approach in order to achieve a better performance especially in the cloud. In this paper, we address the multi-criteria optimization problem of tuning thresholds related to distributed frequent pattern mining in cloud computing environment while optimizing the global monetary cost of storing and querying data in the cloud. To achieve this goal, we design cost models for managing and mining graph data with large scale pattern mining framework over a cloud architecture. We define four objective functions, with respect to the needs of customers. We present an experimental validation of the proposed cost models in the case of distributed subgraph mining in the cloud.

Abstract: National audience; Recently, graph mining approaches have become very popular, especially in certain domains such as bioinformatics, chemoinformatics and social networks. One of the most challenging tasks is frequent subgraph discovery. This task has been highly motivated by the tremendously increasing size of existing graph databases. Due to this fact, there is an urgent need of efficient and scaling approaches for frequent subgraph discovery. In this paper, we propose a novel approach to approximate large-scale subgraph mining by means of a density-based partitioning technique, using the MapReduce framework. Our partitioning aims to balance computational load on a collection of machines. We experimentally show that our approach decreases significantly the execution time and scales the subgraph discovery process to large graph databases.

Abstract: International audience; This paper studies the problem of materializing views for a database stored in the cloud, in order to improve the response time of queries on the database under a budget limit. Views are subsets of the database, also stored in the cloud, that act like caches to accelerate the access to data. In a cloud, CPU usage and data storage have to be paid, meaning that a trade-off between speed gain and storage cost has to be found. The problem has been formulated as a mixed integer program (MIP) and identified as NP-hard. To solve the problem a GRASP heuristic is proposed. The quality and speed of this algorithm is compared with the results of a MIP solver. Numerical experiments on many randomly generated instances of the problem show that the proposed approach is able to efficiently solve large instances of the problem.

Abstract: [Departement_IRSTEA]Ecotechnologies [TR1_IRSTEA]MOTIVE; National audience; Dans les bases et entrepôts de données, la performance des requêtes est classiquement assurée grâce à des structures comme les caches, les index et les vues matérialisées. Dans ce contexte, des modèles de coût permettent de sélectionner un ensemble efficace de ce type de structures. Toutefois, cette tâche de sélection devient plus complexe dans le nuage, car en plus des temps de réponse, il faut simultanément optimiser le coût monétaire d'utilisation du nuage. En conséquence, nous proposons dans cet article de nouveaux modèles de coût qui intègrent le paradigme de paiement à la demande en vigueur dans les nuages informatiques. Sur la base de ces modèles, nous définissons un problème d'optimisation consistant à sélectionner, parmi un ensemble de vues candidates, celles qu'il faut matérialiser pour minimiser le coût d'interrogation et de maintenance de la base de données, ainsi que le temps de réponse à une charge de requêtes donnée. Dans un premier temps, nous optimisons les deux critères précédents séparément: le temps de réponse est optimisé sous contrainte de coût et vice versa. Les expériences que nous avons menées pour valider cette proposition montrent que la matérialisation de vues dans le nuage est toujours avantageuse.

Abstract: 10 pages, à paraître; International audience; Cloud computing provides access to "infinite" storage and computing resources, offering promising perspectives for many applications (medicine, nuclear physics, meteorology, etc.). However, this new paradigm requires rethinking of database management principles in order to allow deployment on scalable and easy to access infrastructures, applying a pay-as-you-go model. This position paper introduces building blocks to provide cost-aware semantic caching. To this end, we first introduce cost models for data management in the cloud, then we present a semantic caching framework providing finely tuned caches for different data analysis systems. This semantic caching framework is then discussed in the context of our previous work on rewriting rules and cache management for OLAP queries. Finally, it discusses the problem of query evaluation in the cloud in presence of semantic caches as a multi-criteria optimization problem.

Abstract: International audience; Caching is an important element to tackle performance issues in largely distributed data management. However, caches are efficient only if they are well configured according to the context of use. As a consequence, they are usually built from scratch. Such an approach appears to be expensive and time consuming in grids where the various characteristics lead to many heterogeneous cache requirements. This paper proposes a framework facilitating the construction of sophisticated and dynamically adaptable caches for heterogeneous applications. Such a framework has enabled the evaluation of several configurations for distributed data querying systems and leads us to propose innovative approaches for semantic and cooperative caching. This paper also reports the results obtained in bioinformatics data management on grids showing the relevance of our proposals.

Abstract: National audience; Les grilles de calcul sont souvent utilisées dans le cadre du calcul intensif avec des applications existantes qui nécessitent de pouvoir accéder leurs données de différentes manières : fichiers ou requêtes plus évoluées. Leurs besoins sont variésmais incluent souvent la sélection de données sur des critères relatifs auxmétadonnées associées, cesmétadonnées étant de type système, nomd'un fichier par exemple, ou applicatives. Par ailleurs, l'utilisation des grilles permet un passage à l'échelle en terme de stockage et d'accès ainsi que la coopération entre des sites. Elle n'est cependant viable que si les performances sont au rendez-vous. Dans cet article, nous proposons une infrastructure pour la gestion de données scientifiques sur une grille, Gedeon. Elle se compose d'une bibliothèque d'entrée/sortie bas niveau, d'un fédérateur d'accès distant et de différentes interfaces d'accès. Aux différents niveaux de manipulation de données se trouvent des caches divers, de données et de requêtes, qui garantissent l'efficacité. Les domaines applicatifs visés sont la bio-informatique et l'imagerie microscopique.

Abstract: International audience; When running queries on a database, choosing an optimal query execution plan to minimize query costs is crucial for the query optimizer. This is especially true in mobile-cloud database systems, where there are multiple costs to execute a query plan such as money, time and energy. In order to fulfill different cost objectives for different users, some query optimizers allow users to select the query execution plan from a Pareto Set based on Skyline queries. The users must select from a potentially large quantity of options, and these options present the values of costs. It is not straightforward to the users how to compare these values in such a way to choose the option that suits their needs best. This increases the possibility for users to choose in-optimal options, and the amount of time spent to make that choice. However, the existing user interaction model during multi-objective query processing is unable to solve this issue. To fill this gap, this paper presents a new user interaction model in multi-objective query processing. This model introduces the administrators, or super users, to the user interaction process, allowing them to preset Weight Profiles and their logical descriptions. Weight Profiles contain objective preferences for the users before the query is executed. By using this model, the users can select a Weight Profile that will obtain their optimal query execution plan, and the process of choosing will be more accurate and efficient.
