Existing approaches compute new valid configurations either at design time, at runtime, or both. However, these approaches can lead to significant computational or validation overheads for each reconfiguration step. We propose a component-based approach that avoids computational and validation overheads using a representation of the set of valid configurations as a variability model. More precisely, our approach leverages feature models to automatically generate, in a component-based formalism called JavaBIP, run-time variability models that respect the feature model constraints. Produced run-time variability models enable control over application reconfiguration by executing reconfiguration requests in such a manner as to ensure the (partial) validity of all reachable configurations. We evaluate our approach on a simple web application deployed on the Heroku cloud platform. Experimental results show that the overheads induced by generated run-time models on systems involving up to 300 features are negligible, demonstrating the practical interest of our approach.

Les approches existantes calculent de nouvelles configurations valides lors de la conception du système, au moment de son exécution ou les deux. Cependant, ces approches peuvent entraîner des surcharges de calcul ou de validation importantes pour chaque étape de reconfiguration. Nous proposons une approche fondée sur un modèle à composants pour éviter les surcharges de calcul et de validation en utilisant une représentation de l'ensemble des configurations valides pour un système grâce aux modèles de variabilité. Plus précisément, notre approche exploite les modèles dits "feature models" pour générer automatiquement des modèles de variabilité dans un formalisme à composants, JavaBIP, qui respectent les mêmes contraintes. Ces modèles de variabilité permettent de contrôler la réconfiguration de l'application en temps d'exécution en exécutant les demandes de reconfiguration de manière à assurer la validité (partielle) de toutes les configurations atteignables. Afin d'évaluer l'intérêt de notre approche, nous l'avons expérimentée sur une application Web déployé sur la plateforme en nuage Heroku. Les surcharges induites par les modèles générés sur des systèmes comportant jusqu'à 300 features s'avèrent négligeables.

International audience; Cloud computing and cyber-physical systems involve software capable of adapting at run time to remain compliant with user demands and environmental constraints. This calls for extending the life cycle of software systems with a reconfiguration step to go beyond analysis, design, development and deployment. Existing approaches compute a new valid configuration at design time, at run time, or both, inducing computational or validation overheads for each reconfiguration step. We propose an approach that relies on variability models to acquire a representation of the set of valid configurations of a system. We use feature models to automatically generate a JavaBIP run-time variability model. The generated model monitors and controls the application behaviour by intercepting reconfiguration requests and executing them in such a manner as to ensure that all reachable configurations are valid without the need of pre-computing the possible configurations neither at design time nor at run-time while only inducing a minimal run-time computational overhead.

Software defined radio (SDR) is a promising technology to tackle flexibility requirements of new generations of communication standards. It can be easily reprogrammed at a software level to implement different waveforms. When relying on a software-based technology such as microprocessors, this approach is clearly flexible and quite easy to design. However, it usually provides low computing capability and therefore low throughput performance. To tackle this issue, FPGA technology turns out to be a good alternative for implementing SDRs. Indeed, FPGAs have both high computing power and reconfiguration capacity. Thus, including FPGAs into the SDR concept may allow to support more waveforms with more strict requirements than a processor-based approach. However, main drawbacks of FPGA design are the level of the input description language that basically needs to be the hardware level, and, the reconfiguration time that may exceed run-time requirements if the complete FPGA is reconfigured. To overcome these issues, this PhD thesis proposes a design methodology that leverages both high-level synthesis tools and dynamic reconfiguration. The proposed methodology is a guideline to completely build a flexible radio for FPGA-based SDR, which can be reconfigured at run-time.; La radio logicielle est une technologie prometteuse pour répondre aux exigences de flexibilité des nouvelles générations de standards de communication. Elle peut être facilement reprogrammée au niveau logiciel pour implémenter différentes formes d'onde. En s'appuyant sur une technologie dite logicielle telle que les microprocesseurs, cette approche est particulièrement flexible et assez facile à mettre en œuvre. Cependant, ce type de technologie conduit généralement à une faible capacité de calcul et, par conséquent, à des débit faibles. Pour résoudre ce problème, la technologie FPGA s'avère être une bonne alternative pour la mise en œuvre de la radio logicielle. En effet, les FPGAs offrent une puissance de calcul élevée et peuvent être reconfigurés. Ainsi, inclure des FPGAs dans le concept de radio logicielle peut permettre de prendre en charge plus de formes d'onde avec des exigences plus strictes qu'une approche basée sur la technologie logicielle. Cependant, les principaux inconvénients d’une conception à base de FPGAs sont le niveau du langage de description d'entrée qui doit typiquement être le niveau matériel, et le temps de reconfiguration qui peut dépasser les exigences d'exécution si le FPGA est entièrement reconfiguré. Pour surmonter ces problèmes, cette thèse propose une méthodologie de conception qui exploite à la fois la synthèse de haut niveau et la reconfiguration dynamique. La méthodologie proposée donne un cadre pour construire une radio flexible pour la radio logicielle à base de FPGAs et qui peut être reconfigurée pendant l'exécution.

The growing complexity of our socio-economic environment is reflected in software engineering by an increase of the size of systems and therefore their complexity. Current systems are mostly concurrent, widely distributed and composed of other systems. They are then called Systems of Systems (SoS). The complexity of systems of systems lies in five intrinsic characteristics: the operational independence of the constituent systems, their managerial independence, the geographical distribution, the existence of emerging behaviours, and finally an evolutionary development process.SoS evolve in unpredictable environment and are constantly integrating new systems. We deal with the problem of the evolutionary development of a SoS by using dynamic reconfiguration. We have defined a process for developing configuration models and a reconfiguration design process incorporating the concept of reconfiguration pattern. For the validity and feasibility of our approach, we have developed an experimental framework based on our real case study of organization of the French emergency service.; La complexité croissante de notre environnement socio-économique se traduit en génie logiciel par une augmentation de la taille des systèmes et par conséquent de leur complexité. Les systèmes actuels sont le plus souvent concurrents, distribués à grande échelle et composés d’autre systèmes. Ils sont alors appelés Systèmes de Systèmes (SdS). La complexité des systèmes de systèmes réside dans leurs cinq caractéristiques intrinsèques qui sont : l’indépendance opérationnelle des systèmes constituants, leur indépendance managériale, la distribution géographique, l’existence de comportements émergents, et enfin un processus de développement évolutionnaire. Les SdS évoluent dans des environnements non prévisibles et intègrent constamment de nouveaux systèmes. Nous avons traité la problématique du développement évolutionnaire d’un SdS en utilisant la reconfiguration dynamique. Nous avons défini un processus pour élaborer des modèles de configurations et un processus de conception de la reconfiguration intégrant le concept de patron de reconfiguration. Pour la validité et la faisabilité de notre approche, nous avons développé un framework d’expérimentation basé sur notre cas d’étude réel d’organisation des systèmes de secours français.

Cette habilitation à diriger des recherches présente une synthèse de mes travaux ayant trait à la reconfiguration dynamique d'architectures logicielles. En première partie, je propose une analyse de l'adaptation dynamique du logiciel avec la volonté de poser les concepts de base et d'identifier les verrous à lever. Je motive l'intérêt de l'adaptation dynamique et modélise son processus de développement. Je présente un nombre de caractéristiques indispensables à l'adaptation dont la réification et la modularité. Je traite alors l'adaptation dynamique du logiciel comme un objet de première classe introduisant un découplage spatio-temporel entre code métier et logique d'adaptation. L'adaptation dynamique ne pouvant se faire au détriment de la qualité du logiciel et de son intégrité, j'énumère un nombre de propriétés indispensables à respecter, de pistes à étudier pour réaliser à l'exécution ce processus d'adaptation du logiciel.En deuxième partie, je présente ma contribution à la mise en oeuvre de l'adaptation dynamique pour les logiciels à base de composants. Dans un premier temps, je propose un patron d'auto-administration pour les architectures à composants, des langages dédiés pour la navigation et la reconfiguration dans les architectures logicielles Fractal, un framework pour faciliter la création d'applications sensibles au contexte. Dans un second temps, je développe une approche multi-étape pour des reconfigurations dynamiques fiables, qui contient à la fois une partie prévention de fautes basée sur une analyse statique et une partie tolérance aux fautes assurée par un moniteur transactionnel. Cette approche s'appuie sur une spécification des (re)configurations du modèle Fractal basée sur une logique du premier ordre. En troisième partie, je montre que la reconfiguration dynamique dans les « architectures en nuages » (Cloud computing) peut apporter une réponse à un enjeu sociétal important, à savoir les transitions numérique et énergétique. Contrairement aux travaux actuels qui visent à améliorer l'efficacité énergétique des centres de données en proposant des solutions dans les couches basses du Cloud, je préconise une approche d'éco-élasticité logicielle sur ses couches hautes. En m'inspirant à la fois du concept d'innovation frugale (Jugaad) et du mécanisme d'effacement de la consommation électrique, un certain nombre d'artefacts originaux comme le Cloud SLA, l'effacement de la consommation du logiciel, la virtualisation de l'énergie ou encore le SaaS green energy-aware, sont suggérés pour diminuer l'empreinte carbone des architectures en nuages. En conclusion, je dresse un bilan final de ma contribution et présente mes perspectives de recherche centrées d'abord sur une généralisation de l'approche précédente à l'aide de méta-modèles, puis sur la conception de micro-services « verts ».

Discrete-event control systems have the opportunity to resolve significant challenges of modern society. In particular, these represent a fundamental solution to manage and control the new technological advances in compliance to the increased consciousness of sustainable development. The parameterization, configuration and decision-making of these control systems are critical aspects that impact the performance and productivity required. Dynamic control architecture approaches, such as reconfigurable control systems, have been proposed for modelling such systems. However, such approaches have failed to address the recovery of the reconfiguration process as these focus on the continuity of execution rather than on the optimisation of the reconfiguration. This dissertation proposes a reference architecture for a reconfigurable control system, named Pollux, designed to manage and adjust optimally and in real time the architecture of a control system, either to guide operational execution or to respond to a system perturbation. Considering a proposed framework of an optimal configuration of control architectures based on shared governance, this proposed approach aims to orchestrate a flexible and customizable decisional entity, a representation that characterize the unique configuration and control solution of the control architecture, and a three-module reconfiguration mechanism that integrates the optimality-based principles into the reconfiguration process, to ensure a recovery of global performance and/or minimise the degradation caused by perturbations. Our approach is applied in the manufacturing domain and is validated in a simulation and a real flexible manufacturing system cell located at the University of Valenciennes, France. The validation conducted in three experimental scenarios verified the benefits of our approach and encourage us to continue research in this direction.; Les systèmes de contrôle des événements discrets ont la possibilité de résoudre les défis importants de la société moderne. International audience; Self-adaptive systems evolve during system's execution against changes in operating environment. Such evolution and re-configuration can be specified at architecture level using a syntactical expressive language such as Architecture Description Languages (ADLs). Variability modeling is an excellent instrument to model variations of software artifacts and their behavior within a self-adaptive system. However , existing ADLs that support dynamic reconfiguration do not explicitly model variation points on which the recon-figuration is based. This constitutes a barrier for a flexible management of reconfiguration at architecture level as well as traceability issues between a dynamic description given at architectural level and its counterpart at other abstraction levels. In this paper, we propose a variant-rich service-oriented ADL that enables system to reconfigure itself at runtime in response to a context change. To this end, our modular ADL, called Dynamic Service-Oriented Product Lines Architecture Description Language (DSOPL-ADL), specifies dynamic reconfigurations at architecture level besides specifying structural, variability and context information. Among several specified variable configurations at architecture level, one concrete configuration is generated at runtime triggered by a context value. Furthermore, an implementation code can be automatically generated from the architectural description.

Cognitive functions arise from the coordination of large-scale brain networks. However, the principles governing interareal functional connectivity dynamics (FCD) remain elusive. Here, we tested the hypothesis that human executive functions arise from the dynamic interplay of multiple networks. To do so, we investigated FCD mediating a key executing function, known as arbitrary visuomotor mapping, using brain connectivity analyses of high-gamma activity recorded using MEG and intracranial EEG. Visuomotor mapping was found to arise from the dynamic interplay of three partly overlapping cortico-cortical and cortico-subcortical functional connectivity (FC) networks. First, visual and parietal regions coordinated with sensorimotor and premotor areas. Second, the dorsal frontoparietal circuit together with the sensorimotor and associative frontostriatal networks took the lead. Finally, cortico-cortical interhemispheric coordination among bilateral sensorimotor regions coupled with the left frontoparietal network and visual areas. We suggest that these networks reflect the processing of visual information, the emergence of visuomotor plans, and the processing of somatosensory reafference or action's outcomes, respectively. We thus demonstrated that visuomotor integration resides in the dynamic reconfiguration of multiple cortico-cortical and cortico-subcortical FC networks. More generally, we showed that visuomotor-related FC is nonstationary and displays switching dynamics and areal flexibility over timescales relevant for task performance. In addition, visuomotor-related FC is characterized by sparse connectivity with density SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENTExecutive functions are supported by the dynamic coordination of neural activity over large-scale networks. The properties of large-scale brain coordination processes, however, remain unclear. Using tools combining MEG and intracranial EEG with brain connectivity analyses, we provide evidence that visuomotor behaviors, a hallmark of executive functions, are mediated by the interplay of multiple and spatially overlapping subnetworks. These subnetworks span visuomotor-related areas, the cortico-cortical and cortico-subcortical interactions of which evolve rapidly and reconfigure over timescales relevant for behavior. Visuomotor-related functional connectivity dynamics are characterized by sparse connections, nonstationarity, switching dynamics, and areal flexibility. We suggest that these properties represent key aspects of large-scale functional networks and cognitive architectures.

International audience; The automotive industry has recently agreed upon the embedded software standard AUTOSAR, whichstructures an application into reusable components that can be deployed according to a given configuration. However, this configuration is fixed at design-time, with no support for dynamically adding, migrating and/or removing components to adapt the system at runtime. In this paper, we present the design and implementation of ASLA (Adaptive System-Level in AUTOSAR) a framework that provides runtime adaptation to AUTOSAR. We believe that our approach opens up new functionalities for vehiclesoftware platforms and can be leveraged in therecent initiative Adaptive AUTOSAR.

With the advent of IaaS elasticity, the amount of resources can be automatically adjusted according to the demand to satisfy a certain level of quality of service (QoS) to customers while minimizing underlying operating costs. The current elasticity model is based on adjusting the IaaS resources through basic autoscaling services, which reaches to its limit in terms of responsiveness and adaptation granularity. Although it is an essential feature for Cloud computing, elasticity remains poorly equipped which prevents the various actors of the Cloud to really enjoy its benefits. In this thesis, we propose to extend the concept of elasticity to higher layers of the cloud, and more precisely to the SaaS level. Then, we present the new concept of software elasticity by defining the ability of the software to adapt, ideally in an autonomous way, to cope with workload changes and/or limitations of IaaS elasticity. This predicament brings the consideration of Cloud elasticity in a multi-layer way through the adaptation of all kind of Cloud resources. To this end, we present a model for the autonomic management of multi-layer elasticity and the associated framework ElaStuff. In order to equip and industrialize the elasticity management process, we propose the perCEPtion monitoring tool, based on complex event processing, which enables the administrators to set up an advanced observation of the Cloud system. In addition, we propose a domain specific language (DSL) for the multi-layer elasticity, called ElaScript, which allows to simply and effectively express reconfiguration plans orchestrating the different levels of elasticity actions. Finally, our proposal to extend the Cloud elasticity to higher layers, particularly to SaaS,is validated experimentally from several perspectives (QoS,energy, responsiveness and accuracy of the scaling, etc.).; L’informatique en nuage, au travers de son modèle en couche et de l’accès à ses services à la demande, a bouleversé la façon de gérer les infrastructures (IaaS) et la manière de produire les logiciels (SaaS). Grâce à l’élasticité de l’infrastructure, la quantité de ressource peut être ajustée automatiquement en fonction de la demande afin de satisfaire un certain niveau de qualité de service (QoS) aux clients tout en minimisant les coûts d’exploitation sous-jacents. Le modèle d’élasticité actuel qui consiste à ajuster les ressources IaaS au travers de services de dimensionnement automatique basiques montre ses limites en termes de réactivité et de granularité d’adaptation. De plus, bien qu’étant une caractéristique cruciale de l’informatique en nuage, l’élasticité est à ce jour pauvrement outillée empêchant ainsi les différents acteurs du Cloud de jouir pleinement de ses bienfaits. Dans ce travail de thèse, nous proposons d’étendre leconcept d’élasticité aux couches hautes du nuage, et plus précisément au niveau du SaaS. Nous présentons ainsi le nouveau concept d’élasticité logicielle que nous définissons comme la capacité d’un logiciel à s’adapter, idéalement de manière autonome, pour répondre aux changements de la demande et/ou aux limitations de l’élasticité des ressources de l’infrastructure. Il s’agit alors d’envisager l’élasticité de manière transverse et multi-couche en considérant l’adaptation des ressources Cloud au sens large. Pour ce faire, nous présentons un modèle pour la gestion autonome de l’élasticité multi-couche et le Framework ElaStuff associé. Dans le but d’outiller et d’industrialiser le processus de gestion de l’élasticité, nous proposons l’outil de surveillance perCEPtion basé sur le traitement des événements complexes et permettant à l’administrateur de mettre en place une observation avancée du système Cloud. De plus, un langage dédié à l’élasticité multi-couche nommé ElaScript est proposé pour exprimer simplement et efficacement des plans de reconfiguration orchestrant les actions d’élasticité de différents niveaux. Enfin, notre proposition d’étendre l’élasticité aux couches hautes du Cloud, et plus particulièrement au niveau SaaS, est validée expérimentalement selon plusieurs points devue (QoS, énergie, réactivité et précision du passage à l’échelle,etc.).

A protocol for runtime reconfiguration of cloud applications with failures.The protocol is de-centralized and robust, and automatically reconfigures cloud applications.The protocol support VM instantiation and destruction, component start-up and shutdown.The protocol is formalized/implemented using the rewriting logic-based language Maude.The protocol has been validated using model checking on a large number of scenarios. Cloud applications involve a set of interconnected software components running on remote virtual machines. The deployment and dynamic reconfiguration of cloud applications, involving the addition/removal of virtual machines and components hosted on these virtual machines, are error-prone tasks. They must preserve the application consistency and respect important architectural invariants related to software dependencies. In this paper, we introduce a protocol for automating these reconfiguration tasks. In order to ensure its correctness and robustness, we implement the protocol with the support of the Maude system for rapid prototyping purposes, and we verify it with its formal analysis tools.

Component-based approaches are increasingly studied and used for the effective development of the applications in software engineering. They offer, on the one hand, safe architecture to developers, and on the other one, a separation of the various functional parts and particularly in the interactive scientific visualization applications. Modeling such applications enables the behavior description of each component and the global system’s actions. Moreover, the interactions between components are expressed through a communication schemes sometimes very complex with, for example, the possibility to lose messages to enhance performance. This thesis describes ComSA model (Component-based approach for Scientific Applications) that relies on a component-based approach dedicated to interactive and dynamic scientific visualization applications and its formalization in strict Colored FIFO Nets (sCFN). The main contributions of this thesis are, first, the definition of a set of tools to model the component’s behaviors and the various application communication policies. Second, providing some properties on the application to guarantee it starts properly. It is done by analyzing and detecting deadlocks. This ensures the liveness throughout the application execution. Finally, we present dynamic reconfiguration of visual analytics applications by adding or removing on the fly of a component without stopping the whole application. This reconfiguration minimizes the number of unavailable services.; Les architectures par composants sont de plus en plus étudiées et utilisées pour le développement efficace des applications en génie logiciel. Elles offrent, d’un côté, une architecture claire aux développeurs, et de l’autre, une séparation des différentes parties fonctionnelles et en particulier dans les applications de visualisation scientifique interactives. La modélisation de ces applications doit permettre la description des comportements de chaque composant et les actions globales du système. De plus, les interactions entre composants s’expriment par des schémas de communication qui peuvent être très complexes avec, par exemple, la possibilité de perdre des messages pour gagner en performance. Cette thèse décrit le modèle ComSA (Component-based approach for Scientific Applications) qui est basé sur une approche par composants dédiée aux applications de visualisation scientifique interactive et dynamique formalisée par les réseaux FIFO colorés stricts (sCFN). Les principales contributions de cette thèse sont dans un premier temps, un ensemble d’outils pour modéliser les différents comportements des composants ainsi que les différentes politiques de communication au sein de l’application. Dans un second temps, la définition de propriétés garantissant un démarrage propre de l’application en analysant et détectant les blocages. Cela permet de garantir la vivacité tout au long de l’exécution de l’application. Finalement l’étude de la reconfiguration dynamique des applications d’analyse visuelle par ajout ou suppression à la volée d’un composant sans arrêter toute l’application. Cette reconfiguration permet de minimiser le nombre de services non disponibles.

The self-reconfiguration capabilities of modern FPGA architectures pave the way for dynamic applications able to adapt to transient events. The CAD flows of modern architectures are nowadays mature but limited by the constraints induced by the complexity of FPGA circuits. In this thesis, multiple contributions are developed to propose an FPGA architecture supporting the dynamic placement of hardware tasks. First, an intermediate representation of these tasks configuration data, independent from their final position, is presented. This representation allows to compress the task data up to 11x with regard to its conventional raw counterpart. An accompanying CAD flow, based on state-of-the-art tools, is proposed to generate relocatable tasks from a high-level description. Then, the online behavior of this mechanism is studied. Two algorithms allowing to decode and create in real-time the conventional bit-stream are described. In addition, an enhancement of the FPGA interconnection network is proposedto increase the placement flexibility of heterogeneous tasks, at the cost of a 10% increase in average of the critical path delay. Eventually, a configurable substitute to the configuration memory found in FPGAs is studied to ease their partial reconfiguration., Les capacités d'auto-reconfiguration des architectures FPGA modernes ouvrent la voie à des applications dynamiques capables d'adapter leur fonctionnement pour répondre à des évènements ponctuels. Les flots de reconfiguration des architectures commerciales sont aujourd'hui aboutis mais limités par des contraintes inhérentes à la complexité de ces circuits. Dans cette thèse, plusieurs contributions sont avancées afin de proposer une architecture FPGA reconfigurable permettant le placement dynamique de tâches matérielles. Dans un premier temps, une représentation intermédiaire des données de configuration de ces tâches, indépendante de leur positionnement final, est présentée. Cette représentation permet notamment d'atteindre des taux de compression allant jusqu'à 11x par rapport à la représentation brute d'une tâche. Un flot de conception basé sur des outils de l'état de l'art accompagne cette représentation et génère des tâches relogeables à partir d'une description haut-niveau. Ensuite, le comportement en ligne de ce mécanisme est étudié. Deux algorithmes permettant le décodage de ces tâches et la génération en temps-réel des données de configuration propres à l'architectures son décrits. Par ailleurs, une amélioration du réseau d'interconnexion d'une architecture FPGA est proposée pour accroître la flexibilité du placement de tâches hétérogènes, avec une augmentation de 10% en moyenne du délai du chemin critique. Enfin, une alternative programmable aux mémoires de configuration de ces circuits est étudiée pour faciliter leur reconfiguration partielle.

International audience; An interactive scientific visualization application is constructed from different codes to implement simulation, data treatment, visualization and interaction parts. The application construction requires support for the assembly of the different parts considering their heterogeneity in the one hand and theneed to achieve an efficient application to be run in real time on the other hand. Component-based approach is an interesting paradigm to handle such applications. Moreover in a context of visual analytics, some applications need to be dynamically reconfigured since some components as analysis steps are not persistent and need to be restarted or stopped on the fly.This paper describes a reconfiguration process for ComSA applications, a component-based approach dedicated to interactive scientific visualization applications that relies on an exogenous coordination model. This process enables the reconfiguration of running applications. It aims to minimize the number of stopped components during the reconfiguration phase while avoiding the application to crash. It uses the properties of the coordinationmodel to circumscribe the part of the application impacted by the reconfiguration. This region is safely paused, then modified and finally restarted.

International audience; Service Component Architecture (SCA) is a set of specifications which describe a model for building applications and systems using a Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA). However, SCA in its current form does not represent any formal definition. In addition, there is a growing interest for verification techniques which help to prevent SCA composition specification failure. In this context, we intend to propose an Event-B based approach so as to configure the SCA composition dynamically. We focus, particularly, on the correctional dynamic such as substituting faulty services and components. The consistency and the validity of the obtained model have been proved by the Event-B dedicated tools

International audience; Dynamic software architectures are those that describe how components and connectors can be created, interconnected, and/or removed during system execution. Most existing architecture description languages (ADLs) provide a limited support to expressively describe these architectures and entail architectural mismatches and inconsistencies between architecture and implementation due to their decoupling from implementation. In this paper, we introduce the dynamic reconfiguration support provided by π-ADL, a formal, well-founded theoretically language for describing dynamic software architectures under structural and behavioral viewpoints. π-ADL provides architectural-level primitives for specifying programmed dynamic reconfigurations, i.e., Foreseen changes described at design time and triggered at runtime. In addition, π-ADL allows enacting dynamic reconfiguration by means of: (i) an exogenous approach, in which it is possible to control all elements of the software architectures and to apply the changes on the whole structure, and (ii) an endogenous approach, in which the architectural elements can manage dynamic reconfiguration actions. Furthermore, π-ADL is integrated with the Go programming language, thus enabling to automatically generate implementation code from architectural descriptions, thus tackling the existing gap between them. We hereby use a real-world flood monitoring system as an illustrative example of how to describe dynamic software architectures in π-ADL and automatically generate source code in Go.

Therefore, the so-called dynamic reconfiguration has been commonly adopted for modifying some components and/or the architecture at runtime. Traditional approaches typically stop the needed components, apply the changes, and restart the components. However, this scheme is not suitable for critical systems and degrades user experience. This paper proposes to switch from the stop/restart scheme to dynamic software updating (DSU) techniques. Instead of stopping a component, its implementation is replaced by another one specifically built to apply the modifications while maintaining the best quality of service possible. The major contributions of this work are: (i) the integration of DSU techniques in a component model; (ii) a reconfiguration development process including specification, proof of correctness using Coq, and; (iii) a systematic method to produce the executable script. In this perspective, the use of DSU techniques brings higher quality of service when reconfiguring component-based software. Moreover, the formalization allows ensuring the safety and consistency of the reconfiguration process.

Beyond the interest of robotics laboratories for the development of dedicated strategies for single vehicle navigation, several laboratories around the world are more and more involved in the general challenging field of cooperative multi-robot navigation. In this context, this work deals with the navigation in formation of a group of Unmanned Ground Vehicles (UGVs) dedicated to structured environments. The complexity of this Multi-Robot System (MRS) does not permit the direct use of neither classical perception nor control techniques. To overcome this problem, this work proposes to break up the overall control dedicated to the achievement of the complex task into a group of accurate and reliable elementary behaviors/controllers (e.g., obstacles avoidance, trajectory tracking, target reaching, navigation in formation, formation reconfiguration, etc.). These behaviors are linked to different information given by the sensors to the actions of vehicles. To guarantee the performances criteria (e.g., stability, convergence, state errors) aimed by the control architecture, the potentialities of hybrid controllers (which controlling continuous systems in the presence of discrete events) are considered. This control architecture is validated for a single vehicle to perform safe and flexible autonomous navigation using an appropriate strategy of navigation through suitable set of waypoints. This flexible navigation allows different vehicle maneuvers between waypoints (e.g., target reaching or obstacle avoidance) without using any trajectory planning nor replanning. The designed control law based on Lyapunov synthesis guarantees the convergence to assigned waypoint while performing safe trajectories. Furthermore, an algorithm to select suitable waypoints’ positions, named Optimal Multi-criteria Waypoint Selection (OMWS), in structured environments while taking into account the safe and reliable vehicle movements, and vehicle constraints and uncertainties is proposed. Subsequently, the control architecture is extended to Multi-Robot Formation (MRF) using a combination of Leader-Follower and behavior-based approaches. An important cooperative MRS issues in this thesis is the dynamic reconfiguration of the formation according to the context of navigation (e.g., to pass from a triangle configuration towards a line if the width of the navigation way is not sufficient). The proposed Strategy for Formation Reconfiguration (SFR) guarantees the stability and the safety of the MRS at the time of the transitions between configuration (e.g., line towards square, triangle towards line, etc.). Therefore, a safe, reactive and dynamic MRF is obtained. Moreover, the degrees of multi-robot safety, stability and reliability of the system are quantified via suitable metrics. Simulations and experiments using urban vehicles (VIPALABs) of the Institut Pascal laboratory allow to perform exhaustive experiments of the proposed control architecture for the navigation in formation of a group of UGVs., Plusieurs laboratoires de robotique à travers le monde travaillent sur le développement de stratégies innovantes pour la navigation autonome de véhicules élémentaires ou en convoi. Dans ce contexte, nos travaux de thèse s’inscrivent principalement dans le cadre de la navigation en formation d’un groupe de véhicules dans des environnements structurés. La complexité de ces systèmes multi-robots ne permet pas l’utilisation directe de techniques classiques de perception et/ou de contrôle/commande. Nos travaux ont consisté à décomposer le contrôle global, dédié à la réalisation de la tâche complexe, en un ensemble de comportements/contrôleurs élémentaires précis et fiables (e.g., évitement d’obstacles, suivi de trajectoire, attraction vers une cible, navigation en formation, etc.). Ces comportements lient les différentes informations fournies par les capteurs aux actions des véhicules. Pour garantir les critères de performances imposés à notre architecture de contrôle/commande (e.g., stabilité, robustesse et/ou borner les erreurs maximales), les potentialités des systèmes hybrides ont été considérées. Cette architecture de contrôle a été validée, dans un premier temps, sur des véhicules pris individuellement, en utilisant notamment une stratégie de navigation sûre et flexible utilisant des points de passage. Cette navigation permet au véhicule d’effectuer différentes manœuvres entre ces points de passage (pour éviter par exemple des obstacles dans l’environnement) et ce sans avoir à planifier/re-planifier des trajectoires globales dans l’environnement. Une loi de commande spécifique, permettant une attraction stable (au sens de Lyapunov) et précise vers des cibles statiques ou dynamiques a été par ailleurs développée. Cette loi de commande garantit la convergence du véhicule vers chaque point de passage tout en garantissant des trajectoires sûres. Par ailleurs, un algorithme nommé OMWS (pour Optimal Multi-criteria Waypoint Selection) a été proposé pour sélectionner les configurations optimales des points de passage dans l’environnement. Cet algorithme permet de garantir des mouvements sûrs et fiables du véhicules en tenant compte des contraintes et incertitudes liées à la navigation du véhicule. Par la suite, l’architecture de contrôle/commande proposée a été étendue aux systèmes multi-robots en utilisant la combinaison d’une approche leader-suiveur et comportementale. Un important aspect de la navigation multi-robots est la reconfiguration dynamique de la formation en fonction du contexte de la navigation (e.g., passer d’une configuration triangle vers ligne si la largeur de la voie de navigation ne suffisait pas). Ainsi, des stratégies de reconfiguration dynamique ont été proposées, permettant de garantir la sureté de la formation même au moment des transitions entre configurations. Il est à noter par ailleurs que des métriques spécifiques ont été proposées pour quantifier la fiabilité et la robustesse des stratégies multi-robots proposées. Plusieurs simulations et expérimentations avec des véhicules urbains (VIPALABs) nous ont permis de confirmer la viabilité et efficacité des architectures de contrôle/commande proposées pour la navigation en formation d’un groupe de VIPALABs.

Sophisticated embedded systems are becoming wide spread today in aerospace, automotive, avionic, and defence industries. They are responsible for control, collision avoidance, driver assistance, target tracking, navigation and communications, amongst other functions. According to the characteristics of these functionalities, high computation rates should be well-delivered while carrying-out intensive signal processing. Furthermore, these embedded systems often operate in uncertain environments. So, they should adapt their functioning mode according to the environmental conditions to provide reliability, fault tolerance, deterministic timing guarantees, and energy efficiency. Undoubtedly, the essential feature of systems to reconfigure themselves (at the hardware or the software level) at run-time comes with additional complexity in the different design flow steps.The design of these sophisticated embedded systems calls for several teams with different domain experts covering electronics, architecture, software engineering, etc. We are in a new era promoting for the dynamicity of heterogeneous and parallel processing. Academic and industrial researchers must address the challenges inherent from this new trend at all the design steps. The scope of my research topics covers mainly low-power design methodology, dynamic execution models for heterogeneous and massively parallel architectures, and reconfiguration model for next generation 3D-FPGAs. My research promotes the convergence towards self-adaptive massively parallel embedded systems.

International audience; Reconfigurable system on Chip (RSoC) is seen as a possible future trend in embedded electronic. This work focuses on the management of dynamically reconfigurable resources (eg. FPGA) using a real time operating system (RTOS) especially designed for such platform. Scheduler and placer are crucial OS services to allow for online management of the computing resources. In this work we introduce multi-shape task management. In multi-shape tasks management the system can choose between several versions of the same task featuring different shapes, sizes and execution times, in order to optimize resource usage. In this paper we present a comparison of several scenarios of a scheduling/placement algorithm for hardware tasks on FPGA using different number of shapes per task. Studied cases have been implemented in C++ and compared regarding runtime overhead or execution time and system efficiency. We show that, compared to a reference case as single-shape EDF (earliest deadline first) algorithm, the FPGA utilization ratio is significantly improved and the task rejection ratio is halved by using only two shapes per task.

International audience; The interactive scientific visualization applications are based on heterogeneous codes to implement simulation or data processing, visualization and interaction parts. These different parts need to be precisely assembled to construct an efficient application running in interactive time. Component-based approach is a good paradigm to express this kind of applications. The interactive scientific visualization domain is now classically extended with visual analysis applications. In this case, some parts of the application need to be added or removed dynamically during its execution. In this paper, we describe a component-based approach dedicated to dynamic interactive scientific visualization applications. We propose a framework called Modulight which implements our approach using the MPI2 library and the optimized socket library 0MQ. The performance of this framework is also analyzed from a real-life application of molecular dynamics.

International audience; Dynamic reconfiguration is viewed as a promising solution for today's complex networked systems. However, considering the critical missions actual systems support, systematic dynamic reconfiguration cannot be achieved unless the accuracy and the safety of reconfiguration activities are guaranteed. In this paper, we describe a model-based approach for runtime configuration verification. Our approach uses model-driven engineering techniques to implement a platform-independent online configuration verification framework that can operate as a lightweight extension for networked systems management solutions. The framework includes a flexible and adaptable runtime verification service built upon a high-level language dedicated to the rigorous specification of configuration models and constraints guarding structural correctness and service behavior conformance. Experimental results with a real-life messaging platform show viable overhead demonstrating the feasibility of our approach.

International audience; This paper presents an original approach of bandwidth-oriented self-adaptivity in the domain of Network-on-Chip, where reconfiguration is handled by network interfaces offering traffic with guarantee of service. Reconfiguration is first based on multiple FIFOs with variables bounds and implemented in a single dual-port memory with a dedicated controller. Secondly, it relies on multiple and compliant TDMA tables based on a new heuristic for path computation. Combination of both techniques provide significant bandwidth improvement with a negligible resource overhead. The proposed solution is demonstrated with cycle-accurate VHDL simulation and FPGA implementation for synthetic and image processing applications.

Recent years have seen a huge evolution of wireless communication standards in the domains of mobile phone, local and wide area networks and video broadcasting. These evolutions aim at increasing the requirements in terms of throughput, robustness against destructive channel effects and convergence of services in a smart terminal. As an example, the fourth generation (4G) of cellular wireless standards aims at providing mobile broadband solution to laptop computer wireless modems, smartphones, and other mobile devices. Diverse features such as ultra-broadband Internet access, IP telephony, gaming services, and streamed multimedia are provided. In order to enable such advanced services at the algorithmic level, new state of the art data processing techniques have been developed and adopted in the emerging wireless communication standards. At the architecture level, many efforts are being conducted towards the design of flexible high throughput hardware platforms which can be configured to the required configuration. In order to reach high flexibility, the I.A.S. (Algorithm Silicon Interaction) team of the Lab-STICC laboratory has developed an Application Specific Instruction Set Processor (ASIP) based multi-standard multiprocessor Turbo decoder. This architecture is based on the DecASIP processor. Previous work provides an efficient way to reach the high performance and high flexibility requirements of emergent standards. However, dynamic reconfiguration aspect of the architecture has not been addressed. In this context, this Ph.D work targets the development of a dynamically reconfigurable multiprocessor Turbo decoder for future communication standards. For that purpose, this thesis work is divided in several steps:The first step consists on the study of the initial processor architecture in order to propose optimizations in a multiprocessor context. This step leads to a new implementation of the DecASIP processor integrating a new configuration memory organization in order to reduce the configuration transfer latency.The second step leads to the development of a configuration infrastructure allowing an efficient and high speed configuration transfer for the ASIPs and the controller of the platform. The proposed approach is based on a low complexity unidirectional pipeline bus implementing optimized transfer mechanisms such as multicast and broadcast. This configuration infrastructure provides an efficient solution in order to transfer an entire configuration for 128 processors in less than one microsecond.Finally, the last step of this thesis work concerns the development of a configuration management of the proposed platform in order to adapt the configuration parameters regarding the environment evolution and the application requirements. This step leads on an approach allowing the support of dynamic configuration of the platform in the context of highly constrained scenario in terms of throughput and error rate performances where each frame or group of frames is associated to a specific configuration.This thesis work will allow the laboratory to present a prototype of a dynamically reconfigurable Turbo decoder respecting future communication standards requirements in terms of flexibility, throughput and error rate performances. En effet, depuis plusieurs années, les standards de communication dans le domaine des réseaux téléphoniques mobiles, des réseaux sans fils locaux et étendus ainsi que des réseaux de diffusion de vidéo numériques ont fortement évolués. Ces évolutions ont notamment imposé une augmentation significative du débit et de la robustesse des communications vis à vis des effets de l'environnement sur les canaux de communication. Face aux nombreux standards devant être gérés par les appareils mobiles, la convergence des services au sein des terminaux devient un enjeu crucial. Par exemple, la 4ème génération (4G) de standards pour la communication sans fils à haut débit a pour objectif de fournir des solutions pour les modems d'ordinateurs portables, les smartphones, ainsi que tout autre appareil mobile communicant. Diverses fonctions comme l'accès internet haut débit, la téléphonie sur IP, les jeux en ligne, et le multimédia en streaming seront alors disponibles. De nouveaux algorithmes ont ainsi été développés et validés afin de permettre la mise en œuvre de ces nouveaux services en vue de leur intégration dans les standards de communication sans fils émergents. Au niveau architectural, de nombreux efforts ont également été fournis pour réaliser de nouvelles plateformes offrant des débits importants et une grande flexibilité permettant notamment une configuration dynamique de la plateforme afin de s’adapter aux conditions d'exécution et à la demande des utilisateurs. Pour atteindre ce niveau de performance et de flexibilité, l'équipe I. A. S (Interaction Algorithme Silicium) du laboratoire Lab-STICC a développé un Turbo-décodeur multistandard et multiprocesseur à base de processeurs ASIP (Application Specific Instruction Set Processor) nommé DecASIP. Ces précédents travaux ont démontré l'intérêt de l'utilisation d'une architecture multiprocesseur pour atteindre un haut degré de performance et de flexibilité. Toutefois, l'aspect reconfiguration dynamique de la plateforme n'avait pas été abordé. Ces travaux de thèse s'articulent donc autour de cette plateforme et ont pour but de développer un récepteur multistandard dynamiquement reconfigurable pour les futurs standards de communication. Ces travaux sont divisés en plusieurs étapes afin d'atteindre cet objectif: La première étape a été l'étude du processeur DecASIP afin d'optimiser sa conception dans le cadre d'un système multiprocesseur reconfigurable. Cette étape a donné lieu à une nouvelle spécification intégrant une réorganisation du stockage des paramètres de configuration. Cette première contribution a permis d'optimiser les performances de reconfiguration du DecASIP. Une nouvelle implémentation du DecASIP optimisé a également été proposée. La seconde étape a eu pour but de définir une infrastructure de communication dédiée à la reconfiguration. Cette deuxième contribution a permis d'optimiser le chargement des nouvelles configurations et le contrôle des DecASIP. Pour cela, une approche basée sur une architecture de bus unidirectionnel pipeliné de faible complexité et offrant des mécanismes de multicast et de broadcast a été proposée. Cette solution permet le transfert d'une configuration pour 128 processeurs avec une latence inférieur à la microseconde. Enfin, la dernière étape des travaux de thèse a été l'étude d'une politique de management de la plateforme afin d'adapter ses paramètres en fonction des données recueillis sur l'environnement et sur l'application exécutée. Cette dernière contribution a abouti au développement d'une approche permettant de supporter la reconfiguration dynamique de la plateforme dans le cas de scénarios à fortes contraintes de débits et de taux d'erreur binaire où chaque trame ou groupe de trames de données est associé à une configuration particulière. Les résultats de ces travaux permettront au laboratoire de proposer un démonstrateur de Turbo-décodeur dynamiquement reconfigurable respectant les besoins des futurs standards de communication en termes de débit, de correction d'erreurs, et de flexibilité. Un tel démonstrateur permettra de tirer profit du savoir-faire du Lab-STICC au niveau des algorithmes de décodage, des architectures multiprocesseurs, de la reconfiguration dynamique et de l'auto-adaptation.

Recent years have seen a huge evolution of wireless communication standards in the domains of mobile phone, local and wide area networks and video broadcasting. These evolutions aim at increasing the requirements in terms of throughput, robustness against destructive channel effects and convergence of services in a smart terminal. As an example, the fourth generation (4G) of cellular wireless standards aims at providing mobile broadband solution to laptop computer wireless modems, smartphones, and other mobile devices. Diverse features such as ultra-broadband Internet access, IP telephony, gaming services, and streamed multimedia are provided. In order to enable such advanced services at the algorithmic level, new state of the art data processing techniques have been developed and adopted in the emerging wireless communication standards. At the architecture level, many efforts are being conducted towards the design of flexible high throughput hardware platforms which can be configured to the required configuration. In order to reach high flexibility, the I.A.S. (Algorithm Silicon Interaction) team of the Lab-STICC laboratory has developed an Application Specific Instruction Set Processor (ASIP) based multi-standard multiprocessor Turbo decoder. This architecture is based on the DecASIP processor. Previous work provides an efficient way to reach the high performance and high flexibility requirements of emergent standards. However, dynamic reconfiguration aspect of the architecture has not been addressed. In this context, this Ph.D work targets the development of a dynamically reconfigurable multiprocessor Turbo decoder for future communication standards. For that purpose, this thesis work is divided in several steps:The first step consists on the study of the initial processor architecture in order to propose optimizations in a multiprocessor context. This step leads to a new implementation of the DecASIP processor integrating a new configuration memory organization in order to reduce the configuration transfer latency.The second step leads to the development of a configuration infrastructure allowing an efficient and high speed configuration transfer for the ASIPs and the controller of the platform. The proposed approach is based on a low complexity unidirectional pipeline bus implementing optimized transfer mechanisms such as multicast and broadcast. This configuration infrastructure provides an efficient solution in order to transfer an entire configuration for 128 processors in less than one microsecond.Finally, the last step of this thesis work concerns the development of a configuration management of the proposed platform in order to adapt the configuration parameters regarding the environment evolution and the application requirements. This step leads on an approach allowing the support of dynamic configuration of the platform in the context of highly constrained scenario in terms of throughput and error rate performances where each frame or group of frames is associated to a specific configuration.This thesis work will allow the laboratory to present a prototype of a dynamically reconfigurable Turbo decoder respecting future communication standards requirements in terms of flexibility, throughput and error rate performances. An embedded software system is reconfigurable when it can modify its behavior or its architecture. The reconfigurations are launched according to the evolution of context requirements and the variation of execution environment constraints. The constant growth of the complexity in embedded systems makes the reconfiguration more important and more difficult to achieve. The challenges concern as much the design model level as the runtime support level. The development of these systems according to the traditional processes is not more applicable in this context. New methods are necessary to conceive and to supply reconfigurable embedded software architectures. We propose a model driven approach that enables to specify dynamic embedded software architectures with respect to non-functional properties. We also propose a runtime support that enables to perform dynamic embedded applications generated from a high level description.; Un système logiciel embarqué est dit reconfigurable, s’il peut modifier son comportement ou son architecture selon l’évolution des exigences de son contexte d’utilisation et la variation des contraintes de son environnement d’exécution. La croissance constante de la complexité afférente et l’autonomie indispensable à la gestion des systèmes logiciels embarqués rendent la reconfiguration de plus en plus importante. Les défis concernent autant le niveau modèle de conception que le niveau environnement et support d’exécution. Les contributions de ce travail portent sur la reconfiguration dynamique guidée par les modèles dans le processus de développement des systèmes logiciels embarqués. Elles ciblent à la fois le niveau modélisation et le niveau plate-forme d’exécution. Par ailleurs, nous proposons une approche basée sur l’ingénierie dirigée par les modèles permettant le passage automatisé et fiable des modèles vers l’implantation, sans rupture de la chaîne de production.

International audience; The multiplication of wireless standards is introducing the need of flexible and reconfigurable multistandard baseband receivers. At the physical layer, multiprocessor turbo decoders have been recently developed in order to provide an answer to the increasing throughput requirement of emerging standards. However these solutions do not sufficiently address reconfiguration performance issues which can be a limiting factor in the future. This work focuses on the design of a reconfigurable multiprocessor architecture for turbo decoding achieving very fast reconfiguration without compromising decoding performances. Dynamic reconfiguration can be performed within a single frame decoding duration opening new perspective for reconfigurable multistandard baseband receivers. For that purpose, optimizations at the processing element level and a novel bus-based configuration infrastructure are proposed. Results show that up to 64 processings elements can be dynamically configured in 5.352 µs. This low configuration latency corresponds to a single frame decoding duration when performing 6 decoding iterations for a throughput up to 666 Mbps.

National audience; La multiplication des standards de communication sans fils introduit le besoin de récepteurs multi-standards reconfigurables. Afin d'adresser cette problématique et faire face à la demande croissante en débit des applications sur les terminaux mobiles, des architectures multi-ASIP ont été développées ces dernières années. De plus, l'évolution dynamique des paramètres de communication ainsi que la réduction du délai entre deux trames de données imposent la mise en œuvre de mécanismes de reconfiguration optimisés. Dans ce contexte, nous proposons d'optimiser un turbo-décodeur multi-ASIP multi-mode et multi-standard dans un but d’optimisation globale des mécanismes de reconfiguration. Les résultats présentés montrent que les optimisations apportées à l’ASIP engendrent un faible surcoût en surface (0.004 mm2 pour une technologie CMOS 65 nm) et permettent de réduire significativement la quantité de données nécessaire à la reconfiguration de la plateforme. En effet, pour une plateforme implémentant 8 ASIP, la quantité de données devant être diffusée aux ASIP lors d'un changement de configuration est divisée par 10 grâce aux optimisations proposées couplées à une infrastructure de configuration efficace.

International audience; Dynamic reconfiguration of multiprocessor platforms is an important challenge for System-on-Chip designers. Addressing this issue is mandatory in order to manage the increasing number of applications and execution conditions that multiprocessor platforms have to face. In this paper, a novel configuration infrastructure for the UDec multi-ASIP turbo decoder architecture is presented. Our approach leads to split the interconnection architecture in two subsets, one dedicated for data and another dedicated for configuration. Indeed both types of communication do not have the same requirements. Our novel configuration infrastructure, which proposes an area efficient and low latency solution, has been validated through a two-step approach. First a SystemC/VHDL mixed simulation model has been developed to perform an early performance evaluation, second a hardware FPGA prototype has been built. Results show that up to 64 processing elements can be dynamically configured in 5.352 µs.

Efficient dynamic configuration of a multi-ASIP turbo decoder.

20; Autonomic systems are known by their ability to manage and reconfigure themselves in reaction to context changes without human intervention. The manual design and management of such complex systems is an error-prone task where both functional and non-functional requirements can be disturbed. In this paper, we provide a correct-by-design approach that allows a given abstract architectural description to be refined into autonomic architecture models that are close to implementations. The challenge is to get a system architecture that includes the necessary components for monitoring the non-functional parameters (e.g. quality of service) and reacting to any degradation by performing runtime reconfigurations. For solving such a problem, we provide an automated approach where an architecture is modelled as a conceptual graph with different levels of abstractions. Nodes represent software components or services or connectors and vertices represent communication or interaction links. To endow a given architecture with such properties, we define graph transformation rules to formally refine a given abstract representation into a specific model allowing the easy implementation of the autonomic schema. Such a refined schema includes the autonomic control loop components namely Monitoring, Analysis, Planning, and Execution (MAPE). We apply our approach to the "Campus-Wide Smart Metering" use-case providing a service-oriented style connecting Machine-to-Machine devices.

Current areas of research, such as ubiquitous and cloud computing, consider execution environments to be in a constant state of change. Dynamic applications—where components can be added, removed and substituted during execution—allow software to adapt and adjust to changing environments, and to accommodate evolving features. Unfortunately, dynamic applications raise design and development issues that have yet to be fully addressed. In this dissertation we show that dynamism is a crosscutting concern that breaks many of the assumptions that developers are otherwise allowed to make in classic applications. Dynamism deeply impacts software design and development. If not handled correctly, dynamism can silently corrupt the application. Furthermore, writing dynamic applications is complex and error-prone, and given the level of complexity and the impact dynamism has on the development process, software cannot become dynamic without (extensive) modification and dynamism cannot be entirely transparent (although much of it may often be externalized or automated). This work focuses on giving the software architect control over the level, the nature and the granularity of dynamism that is required in dynamic applications. This allows architects and developers to choose where the efforts of programming dynamic components are best spent, avoiding the cost and complexity of making all components dynamic. The idea is to allow architects to determine the balance between the efforts spent and the level of dynamism required for the application's needs. At design-time we perform an impact analysis using the architect's requirements for dynamism. This serves to identify components that can be corrupted by dynamism and to—at the architect's disposition—render selected components resilient to dynamism. The application becomes a well-defined mix of dynamic areas, where components are expected to change at runtime, and static areas that are protected from dynamism and where programming is simpler and less restrictive. At runtime, our framework ensures the application remains consistent—even after unexpected dynamic events—by computing and removing potentially corrupt components. The framework attempts to recover quickly from dynamism and to minimize the impact of dynamism on the application. Our work builds on recent Software Engineering and Middleware technologies—namely, OSGi, iPOJO and APAM—that provide basic mechanisms to handle dynamism, such as dependency injection, late-binding, service availability notifications, deployment, lifecycle and dependency management. Our approach, implemented in the Robusta prototype, extends and complements these technologies by providing design and development-time support, and enforcing application execution consistency in the face of dynamism.; Les domaines de recherche actuels, tels que l'informatique ubiquitaire et l'informatique en nuage (cloud computing), considèrent que ces environnements d’exécution sont en changement continue. International audience; This paper provides an extension of MDA called Context-aware Quality Model Driven Architecture (CQ-MDA) which can be used for quality control in pervasive computing environments. The proposed CQ-MDA approach based on ContextualArchRQMM (Contextual ARCHitecture Quality Requirement MetaModel), being an extension to the MDA, allows for considering quality and resources-awareness while conducting the design process. The contributions of this paper are a meta-model for architecture quality control of context-aware applications and a model driven approach to separate architecture concerns from context and quality concerns and to configure reconfigurable software architectures of distributed systems. To demonstrate the utility of our approach, we use a videoconference system.

Despite clear benefits in terms of fexibility and surface efficiency, dynamic reconfiguration of FPGAs is still finding it hard to break through into massive industrial project. One of the main reasons is the lack of means and methods for evaluation of reconfigurable architectures. Worse, main FPGA vendors do not provide official tools allowing developers to easily determine an optimal scheduling reconfiguration for a specific architecture. Within this framework, the proposed research work described in this thesis proposes a methodology for modeling dynamically reconfigurable architectures based on SystemC. The proposed methodology allows designers to save significant time during the design phases of an application specific reconfigurable architecture by providing an initial estimate of performance and resources needed for its development. It also allows development and validation of scheduling reconfiguration scenarios, while respecting real-time constraints associated with the given application. To validate our methodology on a real application, video transcoding IP have been developed and tested. This application consists in the realization of a H.264/MPEG-2 transcoder made self-adaptable through the use of dynamic reconfiguration. This work was conducted as a part of the ARDMAHN project sponsored by the National Research Agency (Agence Nationale de Recheche) with the reference number ANR-09-SEGI-001, Malgré des avantages certains en terme d'adaptabilité et en gain de surface, la reconfiguration dynamique sur FPGA a du mal à être utilisée dans l'industrie. Le manque de moyens et de méthodes d'évaluation d'une telle architecture en est la cause majeure. Pire, aucun outil officiel ne permet aux développeurs de déterminer facilement un ordonnancement de la reconfiguration adapté pour une architecture donnée. Cette thèse s'inscrit dans ce contexte et propose une méthodologie de modélisation SystemC d'architectures reconfigurables dynamiquement. Cet outil d'aide à la conception permet de faire gagner un temps considérable lors de la phase de conception en fournissant une première estimation des performances et des ressources nécessaires au développement de l'architecture. Il permet également le développement et la validation de scénarios d'ordonnancement de la reconfiguration, tout en respectant les contraintes temps réel liées à l'application. Afin de valider notre modèle sur une application réelle, des IP de transcodage vidéo ont été développées et seront détaillées. Cette application consiste en la réalisation d'un transcodeur H.264/MPEG-2, rendu auto-adaptable grâce à l'utilisation de la reconfiguration dynamique. Ces travaux ont été menés dans le cadre du projet ARDMAHN financé par l'Agence Nationale de la Recherche portant la référence ANR-09-SEGI-001

We define and study a combinatorial optimization problem that models multi-path routing in a Network-on-Chip with guaranteed traffic. Based on time division multiplexing, the model allows to avoid collisions, deadlocks and livelocks in irregular network topologies, while minimizing latency. An extension of this multi-path problem is also presented that allows dynamic reconfigurable routing at execution time. In that case, independent sets of valid routes are pre-computed in such a way they can be interchanged during execution with no impact on the existing traffic, while reusing all the vacant time-slot resources. A time-expanded graph approach is retained for the solution process. First, we present a set of basic shortest paths computation operators. They can be a greedy parallel construction heuristic, neighborhood operators, or a modified Dijkstra algorithm for single path computation in pseudo-polynomial time. Then, operators are introduced and combined within two heuristic methods able to address both problems, that is, an iterated construction heuristic and a population based evolutionary algorithm. Experiments are done on a set of benchmarks representative of real life applications, they illustrate the accuracy of the method.; Nous définissons et étudions un problème d'optimisation combinatoire et un programme linéaire en nombres entiers, qui modélise le routage multi-chemin dans un réseau sur puce à garantie de trafic. Basé sur le multiplexage temporel et l'émission cyclique des messages, le modèle permet d'éviter les collisions, les blocages statiques et dynamiques dans des réseaux à topologie irrégulière, tout en minimisant les temps de latence. Une extension de ce problème de routage multi-chemin, qui permet une reconfiguration dynamique du routage au moment de l'exécution est également présentée. Dans ce cas, des ensembles indépendants de chemins valides sont pré-calculés de telle sorte qu'ils peuvent être inter-changés en cours d'exécution sans impact sur le trafic courant, tout en réutilisant tous les intervalles de temps dont les ressources sont vacantes ou libérées. L'approche du graphe spatio-temporel étendu est retenue dans les processus de résolution. Tout d'abord, nous présentons un ensemble d'opérateurs de base de calcul de plus courts chemins. Se sont une heuristique de construction parallèle gloutonne, un opérateur de voisinage, et un algorithme de Dijkstra modifié dans un graphe spatio-temporel étendu qui calcul un chemin unique dans un NoC occupé en temps pseudo-polynomial. Ensuite, pour résoudre l'ensemble des problèmes, les opérateurs sont introduits et combinés dans trois méthodes de recherche locale itérée capable de générer rapidement des solutions admissibles, un algorithme évolutionnaire à base de population solutions conférant une grande diversité à la recherche de solutions et un algorithme mémétique, tirant partie des avantages des deux précédents. Les expériences sont réalisées sur un ensemble d'instances d'applications réelles, et d'instances d'applications artificielles générées aléatoirement à partir des cas réels, pour illustrer les performances et la robustesse des méthodes de recherche.

This PhD thesis concerns the dynamic reconfiguration and simulation of heterogeneous Wireless Sensor Networks. These networks consist of a multitude of electronic units called ?nodes ?, which communicate through a radio interface. The radio interface is the most power-consuming on the node. This is why the minimisation of the radio-time would lead to improved energy efficiency. We have implemented a software solution which consists in sending an update to a node which is coded in a high-level language (MinTax). This file is compiled by the node and machine code is generated for the target hardware architecture. Owing to the abstract nature of MinTax, multiple hardware architectures. as well as operating systems are supported. As a second part of this PhD, work has been focused on a network simulator called IDEATLM.IDEA1TLM allows us to predict which circuits and configurations are the most appropriate for a given task. This solution has been improved to allow a faster simulation of electronic systems which are different from a hardware standpoint, yet part of the same network, as well as to model the actual software running on them., Cette thèse porte premièrement sur la reconfiguration dynamique et la simulation hétérogène dans les Réseaux des Capteurs sans Fil. Ces réseaux sont constitués d’une multitude de systèmes électroniques communicants par radio-fréquence, très contraints en énergie. La partie de communication radio entre ces nœuds est la plus consommatrice. C’est pourquoi la minimisation du temps effectif est désirée. On a implémenté une solution qui consiste à envoyer au nœud un fichier de reconfiguration codé utilisant un langage de programmation haut niveau (MinTax). Le nœud sera capable de compiler ce fichier et générer le code object associé à son architecture, in-situ. Grâce au caractère abstrait du MinTax, plusieurs architectures matérielles et systèmes d’exploitation sont visés. Dans un deuxième temps, ce travail de thèse est lié au simulateur de réseaux de capteurs IDEA1TLM.IDEA1TLM permet de prédire quels circuits et configurations sont les plus adéquats à une application sans fil donnée. Ce simulateur a été amélioré pour permettre la simulation rapide des systèmes électroniques matériellement différents dans le même réseau ainsi que le logiciel présent sur les nœuds.

International audience; The increasing interdependence of economies across the world has stimulated the collaborative development of complex products implying wide ranges of groups. In this context, the collaborative development of products provides new challenges in distributed systems. It requires continuous communication and exchanges between teams of collaborators having different roles and using different tools. A global model of collaboration is necessary to guarantee the quality of communication and to ensure adaptability and interoperability between tools whatever may happen. In this paper, we present a framework for collaborative model-based networked services development that supports a semantic adaptation model enabling the awareness of the presence, roles and tasks of collaborating actors. In this article, the implementation of the framework FADYRCOS and its conceptual model are presented. Algorithms that implement dynamic reconfiguration are also presented. A test case for collaborative software development has been developed to validate the framework.

International audience; A major asset of modern systems is to dynamically reconfigure themselves to cope with failures or component updates. Nevertheless, designing such sys- tems with off-the-shelf components is hardly feasible: components are black-boxes that can only interact with others on compatible interfaces. Part of the problem is solved through Software Adaptation techniques, which compensate mismatches between interfaces. Our approach aims at using results of Software Adaptation in order to also provide reconfiguration capabilities to black-box components. This paper first formalizes a framework that unifies behavioral adaptation and structural reconfiguration of components. This formalization is used for statically detecting whether it is possible to reconfigure a system. In a second part, we present five notions of reconfiguration: history-aware reconfiguration, future-aware reconfiguration, property-compliant reconfiguration, one-way reconfigurability, and full reconfigurability. For each of these notions, its relevant properties are presented, and they are illustrated on simple yet realistic examples.

International audience; Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) technology has imposed itself in civilian and industrial applications as a promising technology for wireless monitoring due to its wireless connectivity, removing many hardware constraints. Initially used in low frequency sampling applications, the increasing performances of electronic circuits has driven WSNs to integrate more powerful computation units, paving the way for a new generation of applications based on distributed computation. These new applications (process control, active control, visual surveillance, multimedia streaming) involving medium to heavy computation present real-time requirements at node level where reactivity becomes a primary concern as well as at the network level where latency must be bounded. In this paper, we present the implementation of a high-level language MinTax coupled with an in-situ compilation solution for real time Operating Systems enabling energy-aware dynamic reconfiguration while supporting hardware heterogeneity in Wireless Sensor Networks.

On the one hand, ACME is a language designed in the late 90s as an interchange format for software architectures. The need for recon guration at runtime has led to extend the language with speci c support in Plastik. On the other hand, PDDL is a predicative language for the description of planning problems. It has been designed in the AI community for the International Planning Competition of the ICAPS conferences. Several related works have already proposed to encode software architectures into PDDL. Existing planning algorithms can then be used in order to generate automatically a plan that updates an architecture to another one, i.e., the program of a recon guration. In this paper, we improve the encoding in PDDL. Noticeably we propose how to encode ADL types and constraints in the PDDL representation. Ubiquitous software services are increasingly pervading the daily activities of common people. In turn, this situation is increasing the users' demands for highly dynamic capabilities of these services to satisfy context-dependent requirements. In the last years, the engineering of self-adaptive software has demonstrated its support for these capabilities and has achieved significant advances. However, self-adaptation theories, models and mechanisms are further required to be trustworthy, extensible and re-usable in order to be incorporated as common assets of the software engineering design process, when appropriate. Most of the existing approaches focus only on one kind of these assets, usually an ad-hoc mechanism, and moreover, the community lacks standardized properties to evaluate these mechanisms in comparable ways. To address these shortcomings, in this dissertation we develop and implement a formal model to preserve Quality of Service (QoS) contracts in component-based software applications through dynamic reconfiguration. Our contribution is twofold. First, we provide a comprehensive solution strategy that ranges from a formal foundation that concedes trustworthiness to our proposal, to an experimental evaluation that grants practical feasibility to our work. Second, we identify and define properties inherent to self-adaptive software systems that allow comparable assessment on them. In our first contribution we identify four elements: the formal model, the architecture of the proposal, its implementation, and its experimental evaluation. Our formal model is based on the feedback-loop model to achieve reconfiguration autonomy. To obtain reliability, we build on a typed and attributed graph transformation theory to define component-based application structures, QoS contracts and reconfiguration rules. These definitions are typing structures that guarantee conformance of the corresponding instances. We specify the dynamic reconfiguration operation with these operations. Our approach benefits from graph transformation theorems to guarantee that the reconfiguration process is terminating, atomic, and verifiable on the component-based well-formation rules. To cope with context unpredictability, we conceive a finite state machine that manages states of both, contract fulfillment, and also unfulfillment. We devise an architecture to realize our formal model, which creates and maintains a graph representation of the managed application and the QoS contracts at runtime. Furthermore, this architecture bridges the graph representation structure with the actual running application structure through a pair of functions that maintain the coherence between these two structures. We encode this architecture as an SCA layer for dynamic reconfiguration in an implementation, which we deploy and execute in FraSCAti, a multi-scale SCA middleware. We undertake an experimental evaluation of our approach by applying a benchmark on two plausible case studies. From the obtained results we conclude on the practical feasibility of our proposal. In the second contribution, we aim at filling-in the existing gap in the assessment of the MAPE-K (Monitor, Analyzer, Planner, Executor and shared Knowledge) loop model, which was proposed with no standard properties to compare among its different realizations. Based on an extensive survey of research papers, we characterized common properties inherent to self-adaptive software and proposed for them suitable mappings to metrics. Among the most important properties are the atomic adaptation, the settling-time, the termination, the structural consistency, the robustness, the resource overshoot and the stability. For the validation of our proposal, we analyzed and verified the corresponding conditions for the first five of these properties. With our first contribution, our aim is to advance the software engineering for self-adaptive software systems by providing a comprehensive solution strategy built on a formal foundation. With our second contribution we provide the basis to standardize self-adaptive software properties, useful for their assessment.; L'informatique ubiquitaire envahit de plus en plus nos activités quotidiennes. Cela a pour effet que nous sommes de plus en plus demandeurs de services réagissant dynamiquement au contexte dans lequel nous évoluons. Ces services doivent alors s'adapter à l'environnement dans lequel ils sont utilisés, si possible de façon automatique. Ces dernières années, d'importantes avancées dans le développement de systèmes auto-adaptables ont été faites et ont pu être intégrées dans les logiciels. Néanmoins, il est nécessaire d'étudier des modèles formels et les outils associés pour définir au mieux l'auto-adaptation en vue de garantir la fiabilité, l'extensibilité et la réutilisabilité de ces systèmes, ceci dans un objectif de proposer des artefacts communs et bien définis pour les processus de conception de des applications auto-adaptables. La plupart des approches existantes se concentrent sur l'un des artefacts de ces systèmes auto-adaptables, habituellement sous forme d'un mécanisme ad-hoc. De plus, la communauté manque de standards de comparaison permettant l'évaluation de ces mécanismes d'adaptation et leur fiabilité. Dans cette thèse, pour faire face à ces problématiques, nous proposons un modèle formel permettant de préserver la qualité de service (QoS pour Quality of Service en anglais) à l'aide de contrats dans des applications reconfigurables à base de composants à l'exécution. Notre contribution comprend deux parties. Tout d'abord, nous proposons une solution complète allant de la définition d'un modèle formel de reconfiguration d'un système auto-adaptable fiable jusqu'à l'expérimentation, en démontrant l'applicabilité de l'approche dans une plate-forme à composants reconfigurables. Finalement, nous identifions et définissons des propriétés propres aux logiciels auto-adaptables permettant de les évaluer et de les comparer. Dans notre première contribution, nous identifions quatre éléments principaux : un modèle formel, une architecture de l'approche, une implémentation, et une évaluation sur deux expériences. Notre modèle formel définit un modèle de boucle de contrôle autonome permettant des reconfigurations autonomes. Le modèle propose des propriétés de fiabilité et se base sur la théorie de transformation des graphes typés attribués. Nous utilisons ce type de graphes et de transformations pour définir la structure des applications à base de composants, les contrats de QoS, et les règles de reconfiguration. Ces éléments sont définis par des structures typées qui garantissent que les instances correspondantes sont conformes au modèle. De plus, nous spécifions un ensemble d'opérations pour la reconfiguration dynamique en utilisant ces définitions. Notre approche bénéficie des théorèmes utilisés dans la transformation de graphes, pour garantir que le processus de reconfiguration soit résiliable, atomique, et vérifiable avec les règles structurelles définies dans les applications à base de composants. Pour faire face à l'imprévisibilité inhérente au changement de contexte, nous définissons une machine à états finis que gère à la fois les contrats qui sont respectés ainsi que ceux qui ne le sont pas. Nous développons une architecture pour mettre en œuvre notre modèle formel par l'intermédiaire d'une représentation, au moment de l'exécution, de l'application et des contrats de QoS associés sous forme de graphes. De plus, cette représentation permet la mise en place d'une liaison causale entre les graphes et l'application dont la cohérence est maintenue et garantie à l'aide de fonctions. Nous mettons en œuvre cette architecture sous la forme de composants SCA (Service Component Architecture pour son acronyme en anglais) à l'aide du cadre logiciel F RA SCATI, une plate-forme intergicielle multi-échelle définie dans l'équipe ADAM. Finalement, nous présentons une évaluation de notre expérience par un test de performance (benchmark) sur deux cas d'étude. Les résultats obtenus nous permettent de conclure l'applicabilité de l'approche proposée. Avec notre deuxième contribution, notre objectif est de faire face au manque actuel de méthodes de vérification des instances du modèle de boucle de contrôle de type MAPE-K (Monitor, Analysis, Planning, Execution et Knowledge par son acronyme en anglais). Ce modèle a été proposé sans qu'aucune propriété standardisée ne soit définie et qui pourrait permettre la comparaison des réalisations de cette boucle de contrôle. Nous avons identifié, à partir d'une étude bibliographique conséquente, un ensemble de propriétés inhérentes aux systèmes auto-adaptables. Nous avons proposé un ensemble de propriétés associées à cette étude. Parmi les propriétés identifiées les plus importantes, nous pouvons citer l'adaptation atomique, le temps de configuration (settling-time), la terminaison, la cohérence structurelle, la robustesse, le dépassement de ressources et la stabilité. Pour valider notre approche, nous avons analysé et vérifié les hypothèses pour les cinq premières propriétés. Avec notre première contribution, nous proposons des avancées dans le domaine de l'ingénierie logicielle pour les applications auto-adaptables. Avec notre deuxième contribution, nous apportons des éléments tangibles pour la standardisation des propriétés pour l'évaluation des systèmes auto-adaptables.

Dynamic and partial reconfiguration allows to dynamically allocate the tasks constituting an application in the reconfigurable regions of an FPGA. However, dynamic management of the tasks directly impacts the communications since tasks are not always implemented at the same place in the FPGA. So, the communication architecture must support high flexibility and significant qualities of service (guaranteed bandwidth and/or latency). In this PhD, several interconnection architectures were studied and evaluated regarding their compliance with a dynamically reconfigurable system implemented in FPGA. This study led to the proposal of the DRAFT network that fully supports this concept. This network uses some specificities of the dynamically reconfigurable systems to reduce its hardware resources consumption. Furthermore, if several constraints are verified, the performances are not influenced by the dynamic allocation of the tasks. A network generator, DRAGOON, is also presented in order to implement and simulate the DRAFT network. Following the realization and characterization of this network which was compared with two very popular networks, its integration inside a system was studied. Consequently, a standard interface was designed in order to ease the interconnection of elements such as microprocessors. Considering the degree of complexity of the hardware parts of a reconfigurable system, an OS is often used to act as an abstraction layer. So, a service allowing to realize communications between the various elements of a system while providing a complete abstraction of the DRAFT network was designed in hardware. Considering the various constraints on the use of DRAFT, the OCEAN network was proposed. This network allows a simple interconnection of the elements constituting a system with great flexibility. For this purpose, the OCEAN network is based on two sub-networks, one being dedicated to data transfers, while the other ensures its control. OCEAN network lies on dynamically created communication paths following applicative requirements. This network particularly targets ASIC implementations All these networks were validated and characterized through experiments and implementations in FPGA. Results demonstrate the adequacy between proposed networks and the actual needs, also with the support of complex applications using dynamic reconfiguration. The OCEAN network even proposes an evolution toward future dynamic architectures.; La reconfiguration dynamique partielle permet de placer dynamiquement les tâches d'une application dans des zones reconfigurables d'un FPGA. Cependant, la gestion dynamique des tâches impacte les communications du fait que les tâches ne sont pas toujours allouées au même endroit dans le FPGA. Ainsi, l'architecture d'interconnexions doit supporter une grande flexibilité et un large éventail de qualité de service (bande passante ou latence garantie). Dans cette thèse, plusieurs architectures d'interconnexion ont été étudiées et évaluées en fonction de leur compatibilité avec un système reconfigurable dynamiquement implémenté sur FPGA. Cette étude a conduit à proposer le réseau DRAFT qui supporte pleinement ce concept. Ce réseau utilise certaines spécificités des systèmes reconfigurables dynamiquement actuels pour réduire sa consommation de ressources. De plus, si certaines contraintes sont vérifiées, les performances ne sont pas affectées par l'allocation dynamique des tâches. Un générateur de réseaux, DRAGOON, est aussi présenté afin d'implémenter et de simuler le réseau DRAFT. Suivant la réalisation et la caractérisation du réseau DRAFT qui a été comparé à deux réseaux très populaires, son intégration au sein d'un système a été étudiée. C'est ainsi qu'une interface standard a été développée afin de faciliter l'interconnexion d'éléments tels que des processeurs. Etant donné le degré de complexité des parties matérielles d'un système reconfigurable, un OS est souvent utilisé pour en permettre l'abstraction. Ainsi, un service de communication permettant de réaliser des échanges entre les différents éléments d'un système tout en ayant une abstraction totale du réseau DRAFT a été conçu matériellement. Considérant les différentes contraintes liées à l'utilisation de DRAFT, le réseau OCEAN a été proposé. Ce réseau permet une simplification de l'interconnexion des éléments d'un système avec une très grande souplesse d'utilisation. Ce réseau est pour cela basé sur deux sous- réseaux, l'un étant dédié au transport des données tandis que l'autre en assure le contrôle. Le réseau OCEAN repose sur des chemins de communication créés dynamiquement en fonctions des besoins. Ce réseau dynamique vise plutôt une cible ASIC. L'ensemble des réseaux proposés ont été validés et caractérisés au travers d'expériences et d'implantations sur FPGA. Les résultats montrent une adéquation avec les besoins actuels, et le support efficace de la dynamicité des applications complexes. Le réseau OCEAN propose même une évolution pour de futures architectures dynamique.

International audience; Development of ubiquitous applications is inherently complex. Adaptation system is a solution for ubiquitous computing. It enhances the efficiency of application by the adaptation of software, facilitates application development, and offers a good user experience. Adaptation system is faced with challenges of different research domain including context modeling, situation identification, context reasoning, and adaptation decision. In this paper we discuss the architecture design of adaptation system and the taxonomy of its key technologies in details including communication middleware, context management middleware, adaptation middleware, adaptation platform, application model and software engineering, we analyze and introduce these technologies with the most well-know ubiquitous projects. At the end, we introduce future research directions according to structural adaptation.
