Information about the Second International Conference on Semiconductor Photochemistry which was held in Aberdeen, Scotland on July 23-25, 2007 is presented. The conference attracted 200 participants from 34 nations. The topic of the conference was semiconductor photochemistry, particularly with respect to studies utilising titanium dioxide.

One of the major purposes of observation is the improvement of instruction. In fact, observers evaluate teachers' teaching quality and negotiate their critical comments with teachers in postobservation conferences. This paper was an attempt to investigate and compare Iranian EFL teachers' and observers' evaluations of teachers' teaching quality. Specifically, we attempted to figure out any possible perceptual matches and/or mismatches between teachers and observers concerning teachers' teaching quality. To this end, postobservation conferences between three Iranian EFL observers (one female and two male) and 11 Iranian EFL teachers who worked at a language institute in Iran were audio-recorded, transcribed, and analyzed. Our findings indicated that two major themes were recurrent vis-à-vis observers' evaluations; that is, their evaluations were mainly based on the specific teaching methodology of the institute as well as teachers' and learners' pronunciation and intonation. Three perceptual matches were found: teachers' agreement with the observers' comments regarding teaching methodology, pronunciation and stress patterns, as well as teachers' general information. Furthermore, three major perceptual mismatches were found when teachers disagreed with the observers' comments regarding teaching methodology, pronunciation and stress patterns, and teachers' time management. Finally, our findings indicated that most of such perceptual mismatches were resolved through the dialogic interaction that occurred between the observers and teachers. A practical implication is that holding such postobservation conferences is of utmost importance as they might be mutually beneficial for both observers and teachers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article offers information on the Third International Exergy, Energy and Environment Symposium (IEEES 3) that will be held on July 1-5, 2007 in Evora, Portugal.

This thematic issue of Geofluids includes 11 papers representing the three main topics discussed in the 10th edition of the International Conference on Gas Geochemistry (ICGG-10): (i) gas in petroleum systems and seepage, (ii) gas in geothermal systems and volcanoes and (iii) gas, seismicity and geohazards. ICGG-10 was held in 2009 in Romania, a country extraordinarily rich in surface gas manifestations, that offers innumerable opportunities for innovative studies on gas geochemistry. We briefly describe the present knowledge on gases occurring both in petroliferous sedimentary basins and geothermal areas of Romania. The 11 contributions of this special issue, which include data from eight countries, are then summarised. Based on these papers and other works presented at the ICGG-10, we find that significant advances in analytical capabilities, data treating and interpretation have led to innovative insights into the origin, distribution and environmental impact of gases migrating to the Earth's surface. It is increasingly clear, in particular, that gas geochemistry can be more effective for petroleum exploration, volcano-tectonic, geodynamic and environmental studies, if multiparametric studies are performed and the data are interpreted in the geological context. The article discusses the highlights of the 2nd World Ayurved Congress held in Pune, India on November 9, 2006. It mentions that the workshop was aimed to emphasize the importance of paradigm shift among Ayurvedic scholars. Doctor E. L. Cooper gave a presentation on the global scenario and position of Ayurveda and alternative medicine and the importance of scientific literature. Another session, headed by doctors Cooper and Alexander M. Hankey, involved consultations with researchers concerning their research papers.

It is well-established that hearing loss does not only lead to a reduction of hearing sensitivity. Large individual differences are typically observed among listeners with hearing impairment in a wide range of suprathreshold auditory measures. In many cases, audiometric thresholds cannot fully account for such individual differences, which make it challenging to find adequate compensation strategies in hearing devices. How to characterize, model, and compensate for individual hearing loss were the main topics of the fifth International Symposium on Auditory and Audiological Research (ISAAR), held in Nyborg, Denmark, in August 2015. Summary This paper summarizes one component of a sturgeon conservation genetics workshop held in conjunction with the Third Annual Conference of the North American Chapter of the World Sturgeon Conservation Society from 31 August through 3 September, 2010, at Chico Springs, Montana, USA. The purpose of this portion of the workshop was to foster interdisciplinary communication, help characterize sturgeon conservation and management issues and challenges, and provide the context and rationale for selecting and employing appropriate genetic investigations for sturgeon programs. Specifically, this paper: (i) provides some guiding principles for sturgeon managers and conservationists considering genetic investigations; (ii) provides a general overview of relevant analytical genetic metrics and techniques, including complications from polyploidy; and (iii) provides several examples of sturgeon conservation and management programs currently using genetic analyses for various purposes. Numerous analytical techniques are currently available to address a range of individual and population genetic issues, including population structure and status, origins and relatedness of individual fish and populations, family identity and contribution to year class, species identity and hybridization, forensic cases, and the design and evaluation of conservation and management actions. Rather than focusing on mechanistic or quantitative aspects of available genetic analyses, this paper provides a general context, overview, and several empirical examples to guide the selection of genetic analyses for sturgeon programs. Modern, holistic indoor climate research started with the formation of an interdisciplinary 'Indoor Climate Research Group' in 1962 at the Institute of Hygiene, University of Aarhus, Denmark. After some years, other groups started similar research in Denmark and Sweden, and later -- after the First International Indoor Air Symposium in Copenhagen 1978 -- this research spread to many countries and today it is carried out globally by probably 2000 scientists. This paper recounts the history of Danish indoor climate research, focusing on the three decades from the early 1960s to the founding of the Indoor Air journal in 1991. The aim of this paper is to summarize what was learned in those earlier years and to call to the attention of researchers in this area the need of multidisciplinary research, mingling epidemiological fact-finding field studies with climate chamber studies and laboratory investigations. This paper presents a reflection on a recently proposed solution to the problem of the free vibration response with the constant hysteretic damping model, that has been presented in some conferences in recent years, by the author himself and some of his colleagues. On the one hand, as expected, the subject has been received with natural criticism, mainly due to the well-known non-causal behaviour of the model in free vibration. On the other hand, it was not easy to understand what could be wrong in that proposal, as apparently everything was perfect from a mathematical point of view. The author decided that this subject deserved a more careful and detailed analysis and – in this kind of tutorial paper – the issue seems to have been clarified. It is concluded that the proposed solution involving the constant hysteretic damping corresponds in fact to an equivalent viscously damped model; it is therefore concluded that the application of the constant hysteretic damping to model the free vibration of practical engineering problems should be considered only in the perspective of an equivalent viscously damped model. The concepts of meaning and intentionality play a central role in understanding animal and human intelligence, and they are crucial for creating artifacts with intelligent behavior and robust autonomy in real-life scenarios. The Intentional Dynamical Systems Symposium IDS'04 was held in Memphis, Tennessee, April 26–27, 2004, and it gave a forum to researchers working on the intensively developing interdisciplinary area of dynamical approaches to embedded cognition, based on self-organized development of autonomous systems. The present issue contains selected papers from the symposium addressing dynamical aspects of intentionality and intelligent behavior. All papers have been carefully peer reviewed to meet the standards of the journal. The article presents the abstracts of the research papers presented at the 1st conference on aneuploidy and cancer, Oakland, California, 23-26 January 2004. One of the papers presented at the conference was "Human Breast Adenocarcinoma: DNA Content, Chromosomes, Gene Expression and Prognosis," which showed that the DNA content distribution pattern of a given malignant epithelial cell population is closely related to the degree of centrosomal, chromosomal and gene aberrations, and in turn to altered gene expression patterns, both at the RNA and protein level.

Energy is becoming a main concern nowadays due to the increasing demands on natural energy resources. Base stations (BSs) consume up to 80% of the total energy expenditure in a cellular network. In this paper, we propose and evaluate a green radio network planning approach by jointly optimizing the number of active BSs and the BS on/off switching patterns based on the changing traffic conditions in the network in an effort to reduce the total energy consumption of the BSs. The problem is formulated as an integer optimization problem, which proves to be NP-complete, and thus it can be efficiently solved for small to medium network sizes. For large network sizes, we propose a heuristic solution with close to optimal performance because the optimal solution becomes computationally complex. Planning is performed based on two approaches: a reactive and a proactive approach. In the proactive approach, planning will be performed starting with the lowest traffic demand until reaching the highest traffic demand, whereas in the reactive approach, the reverse way is considered. Performance results are presented for various case studies and are complemented by testing the proposed approaches using commercial radio network planning tools. Results demonstrate considerable energy savings reaching up to 40% through dynamic adaptation of the number of simultaneously active BSs. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. This paper proposes a logical model of multi-demand bargaining with integrity constraints. We also construct a simultaneous concession solution to bargaining games of this kind and show that the solution is uniquely characterized by a set of logical properties. Moreover, we prove that the solution also satisfies the most fundamental game theoretic properties such as symmetry and Pareto optimality. In addition, by lots of simulation experiments we study how the number of conflicting demands, bargainers' risk attitude, and bargainer number influence the bargaining success rate and efficiency as well as the agreement quality. In 1974, artificial reef researchers organized the first International Conference on the subject of 'Reefs'. The conference was held 20-22 March 1974 in Houston, Texas, USA '...to provide an international forum for the exchange of information, experiences and thoughts among persons involved with or interested in any aspect of artificial reef research, construction or use' (Proceedings of the International Conference on Artificial Reefs, Houston, 1974, Texas A & M University Sea Grant College, College Station, TX). Nearly forty years have passed since that initial meeting and, while there have been many other conferences held on the subject of artificial reefs (see Bortone 2011a for a partial review), the need for these fora continues. Over the years, there have been changes in approaches, technology, political climate, and financial conditions with regard to artificial reef research. Stone et al. () and Bortone () presented summaries of the previous CARAHs. The purpose here is to emphasize the milestones with regard to technology, direction, emphasis, scope and accomplishment of the efforts of the international artificial reef research community. It is through this perspective that one should gain an appreciation of the overall contribution that CARAHs have made toward refinement and progression to resolve many of the issues we face today in modern aquatic resource management. The continuing level of involvement occurs in the absence of a formal society, standing organizing committee, or scientific tribunal to oversee its progress. The fact that these conferences have occurred with such frequency, orderly direction, and high standards is attributable to the professionalism and diligence of all involved. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

2nd International Fisheries Symposium (held in Girne, Northern Cyprus, 4 - 8 Nov. 2018): Special section on Turkish contributions The 2nd international Symposium on Fisheries science focused primarily on regional aspects, principally those within the Mediterranean and Black Sea regions. Our auditory environment is constantly changing and evolving over time, requiring us to rapidly adapt to a complex dynamic sensory input. This adaptive ability of our auditory system can be observed at different levels, from individual cell responses to complex neural mechanisms and behavior, and is essential to achieve successful speech communication, correct orientation in our full environment, and eventually survival. These adaptive processes may differ in individuals with hearing loss, whose auditory system may cope via "readapting" itself over a longer time scale to the changes in sensory input induced by hearing impairment and the compensation provided by hearing devices. These devices themselves are now able to adapt to the listener's individual environment, attentional state, and behavior. These topics related to auditory adaptation, in the broad sense of the term, were central to the 6th International Symposium on Auditory and Audiological Research held in Nyborg, Denmark, in August 2017. The symposium addressed adaptive processes in hearing from different angles, together with a wide variety of other auditory and audiological topics. Radiant floor heating has received increasing attention due to its diverse advantages, especially the energy saving as compared to the conventional dwelling heating system. This paper presents a numerical investigation of airflow and heat transfer in the slot-vented room with the radiant floor heating unit. Combination of fluid convection and thermal radiation has been implemented through the thermal boundary conditions. Spatial distributions of indoor air temperature and velocity, as well as the heat transfer rates along the radiant floor and the outer wall, have been presented and analyzed covering the domains from complete natural convection to forced convection dominated flows. The numerical results demonstrate that the levels of average temperature in the room with lateral slot-ventilation are higher than those without slot-ventilation, but lower than those in the room with ceiling slot-ventilation. Overall, the slot-ventilation room with radiant floor heating unit could offer better indoor air quality through increasing the indoor air temperature and fresh air exchanging rate simultaneously. Concerning the airborne pollutant transports and moisture condensations, the performance of radiant floor heating unit will be further optimized in our future researches. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper investigates the potential threat to the prohibition of the hostile misuse of the life sciences embodied in the Biological and Toxin Weapons Convention from the rapid advances in the field of neuroscience. The paper describes how the implications of advances in science and technology are considered at the Five Year Review Conferences of the Convention and how State Parties have developed their appreciations since the First Review Conference in 1980. The ongoing advances in neurosciences are then assessed and their implications for the Convention examined. It is concluded that State Parties should consider a much more regular and systematic review system for such relevant advances in science and technology when they meet at the Seventh Review Conference in late 2011, and that neuroscientists should be much more informed and engaged in these processes of protecting their work from malign misuse. The 2008 UK National Smoking Cessation Conference (UKNSSC) included a number of oral and poster presentations on the theme of smoking during pregnancy. This is a challenging area of research and practice and one in which new evidence — both about the effects of smoking in pregnancy and about smoking cessation interventions — is regularly emerging. Papers at UKNSCC explored why few women access support to stop (Felix Naughton), how best to refer women to specialist services (Joan Braithwaite), social marketing approaches (Deborah Richardson and Wendy Dudley) and physical activity for smoking cessation during pregnancy (Michael Ussher). The conference opened with a plenary presentation that explored the extent of smoking during pregnancy and women's accounts of quit attempts, cessation and relapse. It also examined what more could be done to improve access to stop smoking services for pregnant women and increase the proportion of women who quit. This article reviews some of the evidence presented at UKNSSC, focusing in particular on the need for improved identification, referral, engagement and treatment of pregnant smokers. This article presents information on several articles presented in annual research conference in Cambridge related to nursing workforce. It is now widely recognized that the shortage of nursing staff is a major impediment to improving the quality of patient care in the UK National Health Service. Recent government policy has been directed towards improving the quality of nurses work life in order to retain experienced staff and attract new recruits into the health care workforce. Although there is some evidence that changes in the management of human resources in the NHS has had a positive effect on recruitment and retention, these efforts must continue if one is to meet the challenge of an ageing population and an ageing workforce.

In the paper "Peroxisome Proliferator-Activated Receptor-Gamma Is a Pivotal Key for Pro-Inflammatory Effect of Leptin on Human Epithelial Colonic Cells," researchers say that leptin, the product of the ob gene, regulates food intake, energy balance and lymphocyte functions. In the research paper "Anti-Inflammatory Potency of PPAR Ligands in Articular Cells," researchers conclude that peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors are ligand-activated transcription factors belonging to the nuclear receptor superfam.
