Many studies have evaluated the relationships between alkaline phosphatase ( ALP) levels and the prognosis for osteosarcoma. However, a consensus has yet to be reached. We completed a meta-analysis to assess the significance of ALP and prognosis for osteosarcoma. We retrieved eligible documents from the PubMed and Embase databases and extracted related data from those documents. The overall survival ( OS), hazard ratio ( HR) and event-free survival ( EFS) HR were obtained after combination to evaluate the impacts of ALP levels on prognosis for osteosarcoma. After screening, a total of 12 documents published between 1999 and 2013 were included. The ALP levels on OS were evaluated in nine documents. The pooled HRs was 1.78 (95% CI: 1.52-2.07, p < .05). The ALP levels on EFS were determined in eight documents. The pooled HRs was 1.58 (95% CI: 1.37-1.82, p < .05). Begg's test (OS, p > .754; EFS, p > .386) and Egger's test (OS, p > .649; EFS, p > .274) showed that there was no significant publication bias during analytic process. In summary, our meta-analysis shows that a higher level of ALP can decrease the OS and EFS in patients with osteosarcoma and ALP is an important biological indicator for patients with osteosarcoma. To identify and characterize aetiologic agent(s) associated with an outbreak of a severe diarrhoea in piglets in Jiangxi, China, in March 2015, a nested reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction ( RT- PCR) for the detection of porcine deltacoronavirus ( PDCoV) was developed. A survey based on the nested RT- PCR established indicated that the monoinfection of PDCoV (33.71%) and coinfection of PDCoV (19.66%) with porcine epidemic diarrhoea virus ( PEDV) were common in diarrhoeal pigs in Jiangxi, China. A high prevalence of PDCoV (58.33%) in diarrhoeal samples which were PEDV negative was observed. The complete genome sequence of a representative PDCoV strain, PDCoV/ CHJXNI2/2015, was determined. Phylogenetic analysis of complete genome and S protein sequences of PDCoV/ CHJXNI2/2015 demonstrated that it was most closely related to Hong Kong and US PDCoVs. To our knowledge, this is the first report on the identification, prevalence, complete genome sequencing and molecular characterizations of PDCoV in diarrhoeal samples in pigs in China. Summary What is known and Objective: BILR 355 is a second generation non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor. It has shown promising in vitro anti-HIV-1 activities and favourable human pharmacokinetic properties after co-administration with ritonavir (RTV). Lamivudine (3TC) is a nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor. It is excreted predominantly in urine by a transporter-mediated pathway. These two drugs are likely to be given together to HIV-infected patients. The objective of this study was to investigate any steady-state pharmacokinetic interactions between RTV-boosted BILR 355 and 3TC/zidovudine (ZDV). Methods: This was a randomized, open label, prospective study. In group A, 39 healthy subjects were given 3TC/ZDV (150 mg/300 mg) twice daily (b.i.d.) for 7 days, and then BILR 355 and RTV (BILR 355/r, 150 mg/100 mg) were co-administered with this regimen for an additional 7 days. Intensive blood samples were taken on days 7 and 14 for pharmacokinetic assessments. In group B, 12 healthy subjects were given BILR 355/r (150 mg/100 mg) b.i.d. for 7 days. The pharmacokinetic data from group B were pooled with data from group B subjects in other similar studies performed in parallel (BILR 355 alone group in BILR 355 drug-drug interaction studies with tipranavir, lopinavir/RTV, and emtricitabine/tenofovir DF; BILR 355 regimen was the same). Results and Discussion: After co-administration with BILR 355/r, the AUC12,ss and Cmax,ss of 3TC increased by 45% and 24%, respectively; the elimination half-life ( t1/2,ss) of 3TC was significantly increased. However, the pharmacokinetics of ZDV was unchanged. Co-administration with 3TC/ZDV resulted in a 22% decrease in AUC12,ss and a 20% decrease in Cmax,ss for BILR 355. The observed increase in exposure and prolongation of t1/2,ss of 3TC is potentially related to inhibition of OCT-mediated urinary excretion of 3TC. Nasopharyngeal carcinoma is intimately associated with the Epstein – Barr virus (EBV), which we have exploited therapeutically by constructing an EBV-specific synthetic enhancer sequence, within an adenoviral vector, denoted as adv.oriP. The achievement of tumor targeting provides therapeutic potential when delivered systemically, which could impact on distant metastases. We demonstrate here the feasibility and potential utility of combined, minimally invasive in vivo bioluminescence and fluorescence imaging to monitor adenoviral infection of subcutaneous C666-1 nasopharyngeal xenograft tumors stably expressing the DsRed2 gene. Fluorescence imaging was used to monitor the location and size of the C6661.DsRed2 tumors, whereas bioluminescence imaging demonstrated the distribution and specificity of a transcriptionally targeted adenoviral vector, adv.oriP.fluc, expressing the firefly luciferase gene. Fluorescence, bioluminescence, and photographic images were aligned using grids to examine colocalization of adenovirus and tumors. Bioluminescence and fluorescence co-localized in 92% (11/12) of tumors at 24 hr and 100% (12/12) at 96 hr after adv.oriP.fluc (109 ifu) was administered intravenously. Nonspecific luciferase signal was detected in the liver area. The combined imaging was therefore successful in monitoring the uptake of systemically administered adenovirus in implanted tumors. The length-weight relationships ( LWRs) of five Chinese endemic fish species caught by cast nets (mesh size 1 cm) and gillnets (mesh size 4 cm) in the Hongshui River in June and July 2011 and October to November 2012 were determined. Biological processes are often performed by a group of proteins rather than by individual proteins, and proteins in a same biological group form a densely connected subgraph in a protein-protein interaction network. Therefore, finding a densely connected subgraph provides useful information to predict the function or protein complex of uncharacterized proteins in the highly connected subgraph. We have developed an efficient algorithm and program for finding cliques and near-cliques in a protein-protein interaction network. Analysis of the interaction network of yeast proteins using the algorithm demonstrates that 59% of the near-cliques identified by our algorithm have at least one function shared by all the proteins within a near-clique, and that 56% of the near-cliques show a good agreement with the experimentally determined protein complexes catalogued in MIPS.
