Abstract

Multilevel inverters play a vital role in the industrial and renewable energy sectors due to their flexibility in synthesizing sinusoidal waveforms using a low-pass filter with a medium voltage range. It has several drawbacks, such as a higher number of power component requirements and voltage balancing problems. In this study, a new structure for multilevel inverters has been developed to offer good power quality with minimum number of switching devices and gate driver circuits. The proposed structure is configured to operate in symmetrical and asymmetrical configurations for single/three-phase versions. A simulation study using MATLAB/Simulink has been utilized to study the operating characteristics under both configurations. A laboratory prototype has been built to check the feasibility of the proposed structure for real-time applications.

Abstract

Energy efficiency in optical networks is one of the important criteria to attain enhanced performance. Better energy efficiency can be attained in optical networks if the resources are properly scheduled. Polling sequences perform resource scheduling based on load requirements, and various methodologies have evolved in recent times for better efficiency. Load adaptive sequence arrangement (LASA) is one of the familiar and efficient methodologies adopted in various methodologies. However, the power consumption and idle time of optical network units are high which should be reduced to attain optimal network performances. Considering this, a modified LASA is presented in this research work for the regional area metropolitan optical access network (RAMOAN). The modified LASA is obtained by integrating the first-in-last-out polling sequence such that the proposed arrangement provides a better coverage radius, minimal power cost, maximum access reach, maximum energy saving, and minimal delay and energy cost. The better performance of the proposed approach is compared with traditional time and wavelength division multiplexed (TWDM), TWDM-protected, and RAMOAN with LASA through simulation analysis to validate the better performances of the proposed model. Abstract

In many photovoltaic (PV) energy conversion systems, nonisolated DC-DC converters with high voltage gain are desired. The PV exhibits a nonlinear power characteristic which greatly depends on the environmental conditions. Hence in order to draw maximum available power various algorithms are used with PV voltage/current or both as an input for the maximum power point tracking (MPPT) controller. In this paper, golden section search (GSS) based MPPT control and its application with three-level DC-DC boost converter for MPPT are demonstrated. The three-level boost converter provides the high voltage transfer which enables the high power PV system to work with low size inductors with high efficiency. The balancing of the voltage across the two capacitors of the converter and MPPT is achieved using a simple duty cycle based voltage controller. Detailed simulation of three-level DC-DC converter topology with GSS algorithm is carried out in MATLAB/SIMULINK platform. The validation of the proposed system is done by the experiments carried out on hardware prototype of 100 W converter with low cost AT’mega328 controller as a core controller. From the results, the proposed system suits as one of the solutions for PV based generation system and the experimental results show high performance, such as a conversion efficiency of 94%.
