To study the influence of fillings on rock failure. By turning to the Drucker-Prager strength model and cumulative damage criteria, investigations are made, with the nonlinear AUTODYN software, into crack propagation behaviors in crack-filled and unfilled specimens under uniaxial dynamic loading. Under investigations are crack initiation position, sequence and angle, and coalescence mode. According to the mode of propagation and coalescence, cracks are divided into three types, i.e., the tensile wing, the antiwing, and the horsetail. The simulation results show that under uniaxial dynamic loading, differences are found in initiation position, angle, and coalescence mode for specimens with cracks filled or otherwise. However, filling does not affect crack initiation sequence. Under the same loading, the damage to filled specimen is less severe than that to the unfilled specimen.

To explain the observed phenomenon that most SARS‐CoV‐2 transmission occurs indoors whereas its outdoor transmission is rare, a simple macroscopic aerosol balance model is developed to link short‐ and long‐range airborne transmission. The model considers the involvement of exhaled droplets with initial diameter ≤50 µm in the short‐range airborne route, whereas only a fraction of these droplets with an initial diameter within 15 µm or equivalently a final diameter within 5 µm considered in the long‐range airborne route. One surprising finding is that the room ventilation rate significantly affects the short‐range airborne route, in contrast to traditional belief. When the ventilation rate in a room is insufficient, the airborne infection risks due to both short‐ and long‐range transmission are high. A ventilation rate of 10 L/s per person provides a similar concentration vs distance decay profile to that in outdoor settings, which provides additional justification for the widely adopted ventilation standard of 10 L/s per person. The newly obtained data do not support the basic assumption in the existing ventilation standard ASHRAE 62.1 (2019) that the required people outdoor air rate is constant if the standard is used directly for respiratory infection control. Instead, it is necessary to increase the ventilation rate when the physical distance between people is less than approximately 2 m.

This paper will study the high accuracy numerical solutions for elastic equations with nonlinear boundary value conditions. The equations will be converted into nonlinear boundary integral equations by the potential theory, in which logarithmic singularity and Cauchy singularity are calculated simultaneously. Mechanical quadrature methods (MQMs) are presented to solve the nonlinear equations where the accuracy of the solutions is of three orders. According to the asymptotical compact convergence theory, the errors with odd powers asymptotic expansion are obtained. Following the asymptotic expansion, the accuracy of the solutions can be improved to five orders with the Richardson extrapolation. Some results are shown regarding these approximations for problems by the numerical example.

Three-dimensional numerical calculation was performed to investigate the effects of partial blockage inside cylindrical film holes on the film cooling effectiveness over a flat plate. Five blockage ratios ranged from 0.1 to 0.5 and a series of blockage positions were considered under the blowing ratios of 0.3–1.5. It is found that the blockage position has a significant influence on mainstream-coolant jet interaction. The partial blockage located at the leading edge of coolant-hole exit mitigates the primary vortices due to mainstream-coolant jet interaction. The coolant jet penetration along vertical direction is suppressed and the peak velocity along streamwise direction is augmented under the action of partial blockage at the upstream side of film holes, providing an increment of film cooling effectiveness, especially under high blowing ratio. While the partial blockages located at the trailing or lateral edges of coolant-hole exit weaken the film cooling effectiveness. In relation to the partial blockage located in the vicinity of coolant-hole exit, the partial blockage located in the vicinity of coolant-hole inlet or middle has less impaction on the film cooling effectiveness under low blowing ratio.

Both temporally and spectrally resolved fine structures of 90° lateral (3/2)ω0 harmonic emission were experimentally observed. The existence of (3/2)ω0 harmonic filaments is attributed to formation from the moving filament bottom at its transient nc/4 surface. The double hump structure with its intense red hump of laterally emitted (3/2)ω0 spectrum can also be explained by a Doppler correction in addition to the thermal correction. Estimation of both red and blue spectral shifts with our simple model is qualitatively consistent with experimental results. Experiments showed that the (3/2)ω0 emission was evidently suppressed by using a broad band laser. This may be promising for superhot electron suppression.
