In this article, a linear class AB and nonlinear class E power amplifier for WiMAX application are designed using the concept of equivalent capacitance. This concept provides a straightforward way to design power amplifiers at microwave frequencies without recurring to cumbersome formulas or optimization processes intended to get the output power and efficiencies figures associated to these amplifier classes. To capture variations in the Si/SiGe HBT process characteristics, we could extract a complete equivalent-circuit model for each device, but this would be a time-consuming process. In this article, we develop an alternative approach based on an artificial neural network (ANN). To keep the complexity of the ANN low, we limit this mapping to the most sensitive elements by utilizing sensitivity analysis on a reference device. Behavioral models for microwave devices from time domain large-signal measurements are developed. For the presented examples, the model is defined by representing the terminal currents as a function of the terminal voltages and their derivatives.
