The article explores U.S. landscape architect, farmer, and journalist Frederick Law Olmsted's journey through the American South in the 1850s while writing about slavery there for the "New York Daily Times" newspaper, later called "The New York Times." The article describes Olmsted's impressions of the South, particularly the conditions of slaves and his view that slavery produced flawed economics and culture. The article states that Olmsted's dispatches were made into three books.
