The article discusses the significance of general anesthesia and its use during the U.S. Civil War, which aided in the medical treatment of soldiers of both sides of the U.S. Civil War. The article examines experiments utilizing anesthesia by Georgian Crawford W. Long, among others, ether and chloroform, and the use of anesthesia upon Confederate general Stonewall Jackson during the amputation of his left arm.
