Contributor: Knut Sunnanå Introduction: Since the development of IFAP many new analytical methods have been developed which are in common usage by assessment working groups. It has proved time consuming or impossible to incorporate these tools into IFAP and as a results most of these new methods are used outside the IFAP framework. This means there has been a lack of adequate quality control in the implementation and usage of the software as well as inefficiency in the exchange of data between programs. As a results there is considerable scope to improve the productivity of assessment working group meetings and reduce vulnerability to errors by trying to bring software development within an organised framework. Most of the meeting was devoted to identifying such a framework which would meet many of the immediate and medium term needs of assessment working groups, ACFM and the Secretariat. It was also recognised that there was a need also to consider a longer terrn more strategic view of how ICES assessment needs might develop. This was not discussed in detail at the meeting but a sub-group has been tasked to produce a policy paper in advance of the May 1998 ACFM meeting.

In 1992 an integrated model for marine research data was developed at the Institute of Marine Research. Traditionally, the marine research disciplines collect data from their own fields, normally used in a limited context. In many research programs there is a strong need to crossrelate data from various sources. To accomplish this it is essential to establish an integrated database, with a uniform data representation and a structure that is flexible enough to represent all kinds of marine data. A centralized database increases the availability, avoids redundancy and enforces access control and protection against loss of data. The model is based on a generic data structure where "platform", "operation", "object" and "measurement" are central entities. In an operation (e.g. trawling) on a platform (e.g. ship), series of measurements (e.g. lengths) of different objects (e.g. fish) are gathered. Data can be classified according to different systems (e.g. taxonomy, regions and methods). The database is implemented in the Ingres relational database system running on HP9000/755 computers with Unix operating system and connected to the institute's local network and Internet. Tests have been carried out to evaluate functionality and performance. While the test results are acceptable, minor immediate modifications are needed. The database will be subject to further development in the future. Currently, work is in progress on data quality assurance, inserting data into the database and adapting software applications. The database is planned to be in regular use at the end of 1993.

The Inst. of Marine Researche in Bergen has since 1935 on a regulary basis acquired data from fixed hydrographic stations on the Norwegian coast. The data are collected by local residents via water samplers and reversing thermometers, and the material is mailed to the Institute appr. twice per month. In order to reduce costs and also to make possible automatic acquisition of data in real or close to real time, a new data communication system for hydrographic data has been developed. In the new system the local observers will measure STD-data with a portable, recording STD instrument. After having finished a STD profile, the observer connects his instrument to a communication system based on a mobile telephone, a modem and a communication interface. At programmable intervals a central PC at the Inst. of Marine Research will sequentially dial the telephone number for each operative communication unit. If an STD instrument has been connected, its recorded data will be loaded to a file in the PC. If no STD has been is connected, the system will continue to the next telephone number. The paper explains the instrumentation, the communication system and the software which has been developed for the system. Results from a field test are also presented. The system is sheduled to be operative from autumn 1991.

Contributor: Odd M. Smedstad Introduction: The results from the International Young Fish survey become available in successive steps. During the survey the numbers of 1-group fish, based on fish below a certain length, are exchanged between the participating research vessels. Immediately after the survey the length compositions of the seven standard species are sent to ICES (in IYFS exchange format), to be used by the different assessment working groups, together with all age-length keys which are available by then. Final data, including length compositions for all species and age-length data, should be submitted to ICES before 15 April. These data are then checked and stored in the ICES IYFS data base, in order to be able to run the final analysis in time for the May meeting of ACFM. This report is based on the analysis done in May 1990.

During a number of years there has been a consent to build up and increase the ICES oceanographic data base to the benefit of the member countries. In parallel to this there has been an increasing demand for ICES to supply e.g. to organisations in cooperation, various data sets or data products. In this connection it has repeatedly been discovered that in many cases the data base does not contain enough data, particularly concerning nutrients, to fullfill the requirements. Various reasons for this is identified in the paper and mechanisms/ arrangements are proposed to increase the supply of data to ICES with a guarantee that the data will not be circulated for unauthorised use. A spin off effect of this is that the data quality will increase for the contributing institutes as well as it will be possible to save data that otherwise may be lost.

A computer program for convenient storage of tag release/recapture data is given. The program provides a facility to combine yearclasses if release/recapture are split into yearclasses. One estimate of number and three different estimates of survival are printed as output. Tables of release/recaptures of tags in different years and absolute and relative tagging densitites together with a table of catch statistics are also given. The program is interactive and presupposes no knowlegde of programming.
