This paper presents new approaches for gait and activity analysis based on data streams of a rotating multibeam (RMB) Lidar sensor. The proposed algorithms are embedded into an integrated 4D vision and visualization system, which is able to analyze and interactively display real scenarios in natural outdoor environments with walking pedestrians. The main focus of the investigations is gait-based person reidentification during tracking and recognition of specific activity patterns, such as bending, waving, making phone calls, and checking the time looking at wristwatches. The descriptors for training and recognition are observed and extracted from realistic outdoor surveillance scenarios, where multiple pedestrians are walking in the field of interest following possibly intersecting trajectories; thus, the observations might often be affected by occlusions or background noise. Since there is no public database available for such scenarios, we created and published a new Lidar-based outdoor gait and activity data set on our website that contains point cloud sequences of 28 different persons extracted and aggregated from 35-min-long measurements. The presented results confirm that both efficient gait-based identification and activity recognition are achievable in the sparse point clouds of a single RMB Lidar sensor. After extracting the people trajectories, we synthesized a free-viewpoint video, in which moving avatar models follow the trajectories of the observed pedestrians in real time, ensuring that the leg movements of the animated avatars are synchronized with the real gait cycles observed in the Lidar stream. Space charge has received much attention recently because an understanding of space charge in oil-paper insulation is useful for the design of converter transformers. This paper presents a study of space charge dynamics at the physical interface using the pulsed electroacoustic (PEA) method. After sample inversion, space charge in the vicinity of semiconductor electrode could be clearly observed when the sample is under depolarization. When an unexposed sample was placed next to a previously polarized one, negative charge appeared at the dielectric interface. These results indicated that there were other reasons in addition to acoustic loss that led to space charge distribution distortion. As regards the dielectric interface, it was found that an electrical double layer was formed at the interface, and the space charge sign was dependent upon the polarity of applied voltage. Space charge behavior at the interface depended on several aspects of the status of the interface, and during voltage polarity reversal, the interface was a weak point of the insulation. Space charge is a threat to insulation materials and oil-paper insulation gradually degrades in service. The degradation of cellulose affects space charge formation, accumulation and dissipation, and the presence of space charge affects the performance of dielectric. In this paper, the effect of thermal aging on space charge behaviors and other properties including permittivity, conductivity, and tensile strength was investigated. Oil-paper samples were aged at a hot spot temperature (180?). During thermal aging, space charge distribution was measured at a regular interval at room temperature. And the pulse electro-acoustic (PEA) method was used for space charge measurement. The results showed that the thermal aging at hot spot temperature caused increase of conductivity and tensile strength degradation. The permittivity increased at the beginning but then it decreased, while dissipation factor showed an upward trend. Besides these, trap distribution and carriers characteristics were also affected. The formations of space charge of unaged and aged oil paper were consequently different under low electric field. Due to the generation of traps by the degradation of cellulose, more charge, especially positive charge was trapped, but the increased traps mostly were shallow traps. Based on the Schottky model, a correlation between space charge injection and the permittivity was drawn. In this paper, the rapid aging due to Partial Discharge (PD) activity was investigated in unaged and thermally aged oil-impregnated paper with a disk-shaped cavity between the sheets of paper. The PD inception voltage and the voltage for instantaneous breakdown were measured, and the time to breakdown was measured by applying voltages less than the instantaneous breakdown voltage. A comparison between time to breakdown of unaged and thermally aged paper shows no significant difference between thermally aged and unaged paper at sustaining PD activity. The time to breakdown as a function of applied electric field was plotted and compared for both cases showing points scattered around a line in log-log scale. Changes of the PD parameters, such as PD magnitude and PD repetition rate were analyzed from the beginning of PD activity up to the moment of breakdown. The results show that the number and magnitude of PD increase at the beginning of aging until they reach to a maximum value, then both quantities decrease slowly over time until the final puncture breakdown occurs. The results emphasize the importance of PD monitoring on real equipment with oil-impregnated paper as insulation system, such as power transformers, since a focus on the number and magnitude of PD at just the present time may mislead the interpretation. Dielectric spectroscopy measurements performed on unaged and thermally aged paper showed an increasing trend of ε" after the sheets of paper were exposed to thermal aging for longer time. Dielectric spectroscopy measurements performed on samples before and after exposure to PD activity showed a big change of ε", This change can be attributed to byproducts and ions produced by PD activity. Moisture equilibrium curves are well accepted methods for moisture estimation of insulation paper in field transformers. The thermal aging effects on moisture partition diagrams of mineral oil-paper and a new aging-resistant mixed oil-paper insulation system were studied. The purpose was to assess the moisture content accurately, particularly in transformers used for long-term operations. Thermal aging experiment was conducted at 130 ?C for 80 days, and moisture equilibrium curves at five different aging degrees and three different temperatures were constructed. Results showed that under the same oil moisture content, the moisture content in paper decreased as the aging condition aggravated. The mass fraction of moisture content in oil and paper was calculated at each aging degree. Comparative results revealed that the moisture absorption capacity of insulation paper had an age-related decreasing tendency, whereas the moisture absorption capacity of insulating oil had an age-related increasing tendency. Moisture partition diagrams of mineral and aging-resistant mixed oil-paper samples were compared. Results showed that with the same oil moisture concentration, the moisture of insulation paper impregnated in mixed oil was remarkably lower than that impregnated in mineral oil. In order to distinguish the influences of moisture and aging on the frequency domain dielectric response of oil-paper insulation and better apply frequency domain spectroscopy (FDS) to assess the insulation condition of power transformers, the oil-paper insulation samples with different moisture contents and different aging states were prepared in the laboratory. The FDS of the samples were tested and a group of characteristic parameters were extracted from dissipation factor (tan?) curves which could be used to assess the moisture content and aging states of oil-paper insulation respectively. The quantitative relationship among characteristic parameters, degree of polymerization (DP) and moisture contents (Km.c) was accurately established. The observations show that the proposed characteristic parameters are sensitive to the moisture in 10-3-102Hz, while the aging states influence the characteristic parameters in 10-3-10-1Hz. Meanwhile, an exponential relationship equation which could be used to assess the oil-paper insulation condition was established among the characteristic parameters, DP and the moisture content. Finally, the evaluation technique proposed in this paper was used to diagnose the insulation condition of several field transformers in this way, and its validity was preliminary and reasonably verified. On-line monitoring of insulation systems in power components such as power transformer bushings has significant value for their reliability. Dielectric spectroscopy is known as a powerful tool in condition assessment of power components? solid insulation. However, it is difficult to apply it on-line. Therefore, a new approach of intended use for on-line diagnosis of oil-impregnated paper, as a major insulation component of power transformers and bushings, is presented. In this technique, natural transients such as lightning and switching impulses are used as stimuli for on-line dielectric response measurements. The wide frequency range of these transients is their advantage as stimuli for dielectric spectroscopy. The influence of moisture content and temperature on the dielectric response of oil-impregnated paper has been investigated for performance evaluation of the proposed technique. It is shown that this technique can track the changes caused by moisture content and temperature in the dielectric response of oil-impregnated paper. The results of both low and high voltage study cases have been verified by comparison with Frequency Domain Spectroscopy (FDS). According to the well-matched results with FDS, the proposed technique can offer a valuable approach for frequent monitoring of dielectric properties of oil-impregnated paper insulated systems such as those commonly encountered in power transformer bushings. A low-cost and simple-arranged paper-based microplasma array device made by tape and Xerox paper was presented. Uniform array of discharge can be sustained in Ar, He, and ambient air atmosphere. Stable discharge can be sustained for at least 55 min when plasma is ignited in Ar ambient, based on the examination of time-resolved optical emission spectra. Throughout the conditions investigated, the power consumed by the device was well below 0.3 W. We also demonstrated that stable and uniform discharge can be generated when the device was bent to a radius of curvature of 2.5 mm. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Samples of a dried composite oil-paper system were thermally aged in the laboratory under N2 in a sealed container and analysed using their dielectric response. The contributing loss processes were separated using an equivalent circuit model containing constant high frequency capacitances, dc-conductances, a dispersive capacitance, and a low frequency quasi-dc (q-dc) dispersion process as circuit elements. This low frequency dispersion in oil-paper samples is a bulk property of the system that is often mistaken for a dc conduction process when only the imaginary capacitance or ac-conductance is measured. The Dissado-Hill response function is proposed for the frequency dependence of the dispersive capacitance in the mid-frequency range rather than the Debye function because its cluster concepts correlate with the sample morphology of a matrix of oil-filled cavities. The quasi-dc dispersion is assigned to the transport of mobile charges between charge-clusters associated with locally connected oil filled cavities, which is a process that can be represented on a global scale by the form of hierarchical circuit system that leads to constant phase angle responses, and is here modelled by the Dissado-Hill q-dc function. It was found that the two dispersions moved together to higher frequency with thermal ageing of the composite material. The characteristic frequency common to the dispersions had an activation energy that decreased with thermal ageing, whereas their amplitude increased. Bubble formation from paper insulation during overload is important to understand because it can cause a transformer to fail. This phenomenon has been investigated in a mineral oil-paper system, but not in vegetable oil. This study investigated bubble formation during overload in a vegetable oil impregnated paper system and the results were compared to a mineral oil (Shell Diala B) which was studied previously using similar test equipment and method. The limiting hot-spot temperatures for bubbles and water droplets in vegetable oil for paper with water content between 1 - 6 % were determined. The water content of paper measurement which is critical when setting the winding temperature limit was evaluated using both a moisture sensor and Karl-Fischer titration method. In this paper the accelerated aging experiments of oil-paper insulation are carried out to simulate the oil-paper aging process under normal thermal aging process. On the basis of the results of accelerated aging experiments, how the deviation degree of aging status change under the same aging factors is studied, and a method to calculate the failure probability due to the loss of mechanical strength of the insulation is put forward. This paper presents an approach for economic assessment on insulation diagnosis through accelerated aging experiments. The foundation of this approach for economic assessment on insulation diagnosis is to establish condition simulation method of triple relationships between condition status, aging time and failure probability according to data from accelerated aging experiments. The conclusions are made that the economic and technical factors can affect the optimum life cycle cost of each maintenance strategy, which consequently affects the economic feasibility of condition-based maintenance strategies. Space charge behavior is important in the oil-immersed-paper insulation in converter transformers for HVDC transmission. This paper reports an investigation of the space charge property in samples with two layers of oil-immersed-paper and oil. Based on pulsed electroacoustic (PEA) technique, a waveform recovery method was proposed to get rid of the effects of interface and anisotropy on PEA result, and the space charge distributions in the two-layer samples under different voltage and oil thicknesses were measured. It?s found that the charges with the same polarity as oil side electrode were accumulated at the interface and gradually increased with the increase of applied voltage. However, the positive charge charges always appeared in the oil under positive and negative voltages. Moreover, the charges in samples increased with the increase of applied voltage, while the amount of interface charges decreased with the increase of oil thickness. Due to the existence of interfacial charges, the electrical field in oil-immersed-paper was distorted with its maximum close to the interface. It is indicated that due to the different mobility properties of charges in paper and oil and the interface trap state, the interface between paper and oil plays an important role in charge formation and decay. A rule-based expert system for the integrated control and supervision of the dry-end sections of a paper machine is proposed. This. system is capable of recognizing all the normal and abnormal changes in process operating conditions, including acceleration of sections, threading of paper sheet, nip pressure activation, activation and deactivation of tension control loops, change of parent roll, and sheet break. Copper-sulfide deposition on coil insulating paper used for power transformer insulation is investigated with the aim of obtaining the concentration dependence of corrosive sulfur. Several mineral insulating oils containing dibenzyl disulfide (DBDS), which is typical corrosive sulfur causing the copper sulfide deposition, are used as sample oils. Thermal aging tests are done at 140 °C with an air atmosphere up to 1296 h with Kraft paper-wrapped and bare copper plates. The test results indicate that the deposition rate is proportional to the DBDS concentration and the incubation period before onset of the copper-sulfide deposition is inversely proportional to the DBDS concentration. These concentration dependences can be derived by considering equilibrium between three compounds such as dissolved DBDS-Cu complexes in the oil, adsorbed DBDS-Cu complexes and deposited copper-sulfide on the insulating paper. Fuses are commonly used to provide medium voltage (MV) protection to distribution transformers. Unfortunately, there are certain deficiencies introduced when primary-side fuses are used. In paper mill power systems, given the unique organization of the paper mill loads around individual feeders to facilitate load shedding, it may be advantageous to provide transformer differential relay protection from the primary of the transformer to the load side of the main secondary breaker instead of primary fuse protection. This protection can then trip either a primary-side grounding switch (with fuses) or a primary-side feeder circuit breaker using a fiber or a WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) connection. A generalization of the problem of writing on dirty paper is considered in which one transmitter sends a common message to multiple receivers. Each receiver experiences on its link an additive interference (in addition to the additive noise), which is known noncausally to the transmitter but not to any of the receivers. Applications range from wireless multiple-antenna multicasting to robust dirty paper coding. We develop results for memoryless channels in Gaussian and binary special cases. In most cases, we observe that the availability of side information at the transmitter increases capacity relative to systems without such side information, and that the lack of side information at the receivers decreases capacity relative to systems with such side information. For the noiseless binary case, we establish the capacity when there are two receivers. When there are many receivers, we show that the transmitter side information provides a vanishingly small benefit. When the interference is large and independent across the users, we show that time sharing is optimal. For the Gaussian case, we present a coding scheme and establish its optimality in the high signal-to-interference-plus-noise limit when there are two receivers. When the interference power is large and independent across all the receivers, we show that time-sharing is again optimal. Connections to the problem of robust dirty paper coding are also discussed. A capacitor formed of fluid-impregnated paper metalized on one side and a polymer film results in a relaxation peak caused by the much more rapid polarization of the dielectric fluid impregnated paper relative to the polymer film. This results in the capacitance being a function of frequency, with a substantial increase in capacitance at very low frequencies. A theory for such a capacitor is developed and compared with measurements on actual capacitors with relatively good agreement. In this paper, we investigate a very challenging task of automatically generating presentation slides for academic papers. The generated presentation slides can be used as drafts to help the presenters prepare their formal slides in a quicker way. A novel system called PPSGen is proposed to address this task. It first employs the regression method to learn the importance scores of the sentences in an academic paper, and then exploits the integer linear programming (ILP) method to generate well-structured slides by selecting and aligning key phrases and sentences. Evaluation results on a test set of 200 pairs of papers and slides collected on the web demonstrate that our proposed PPSGen system can generate slides with better quality. A user study is also illustrated to show that PPSGen has a few evident advantages over baseline methods. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Compared to conventional ac cables, the current rating of HVDC cable circuits is more complicated because the permissible current is not only limited by the operating temperature, but also by the electrical stress within the insulation. Therefore the IEC60287 current rating standard is considered insufficient for some HVDC applications because it fails to include the stress limitation. This paper presents an analytical methodology to calculate an electrical stress-limited rating for HVDC cables, which considers the maximum dielectric stress as the current limiting factor.
