This paper proposes an optimization approach for day-ahead reactive power planning to improve voltage security in transmission networks. The problem is formulated as a voltage-secure multi-period optimal reactive power dispatch (MP-ORPD) problem. The optimization approach searches for optimal set-points of dynamic and static reactive power (var) resources. Specifically, the output includes set-points for switching shunts, transformer taps, and voltage magnitudes at the regulated buses. The primary goal is to maximize the dynamic reactive power reserve of the system, by minimizing the reactive power supplied by synchronous generators. As the size of the MP-ORPD problem increases significantly with increasing number of contingencies and time periods, efficiency is crucial for practical applications. In this paper, a decomposition technique based on consensus and alternating optimization, where integer variable targets are obtained via MILP, is used to partition the MP-ORPD problem into a set of subproblems, which can be solved in parallel to reduce the computation time. The proposed MP-ORPD problem and its solution algorithm are integrated into the EPRI-VCA software. The results of various power networks of large electric utilities in the Eastern interconnection demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm in providing preventive control schedules. Recently, multiple static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) units have been adopted in power transmission systems in order to obtain a better voltage regulation and to share loads. However, they could possibly interact in a negative way instead of helping each other, due to the improper design of the STATCOM controllers. To analyze this problem, a d–q frame impedance-based stability analysis was used to explore the instability with the presence of STATCOMs, where previous stability-related findings are not applicable directly because of some unique features of STATCOMs. This paper identified the frequency range of interactions in a viewpoint of d–q frame impedances and pinpointed that the ac voltage regulation was the main reason of instability, masking the effects of phase-locked loop on power transmission systems. In addition, due to the high impedance of STATCOMs around the frequency range of interactions, the number of connected STATCOMs was the main contributor to stability instead of the topology of power systems or the locations of STATCOMs. A scaled-down 2-STATCOM power grid was built to verify the conclusions experimentally. This paper establishes an instantaneous voltage model to illustrate the dynamic characteristics of grid voltage in electromagnetic time scale affected by power-electronic interfaced voltage regulatory devices with two typical categories of control systems, i.e., power-current cascading control and power synchronization control, exemplified by the STATCOM and virtual synchronous condenser (VSCON) respectively. In this paper, a linearized instantaneous voltage model is firstly established to analyze the impact paths of control loops in the STATCOM and VSCON. Based on the model, the dynamic process of grid voltage is divided into three stages. Various factors on the dynamic process of grid voltage are analyzed, especially cascading control loops prior to the functioning of AC voltage control. Moreover, stiffness characteristic is proposed to evaluate the effects of power electronic interfaced voltage regulatory devices with different control structures. This paper presents improved indices to evaluate the contribution of reactive power compensators at HVdc converter terminals. The presence of such compensators impacts converter performance, such as the maximum available power (MAP) limit, susceptance to commutation failure, fault recovery time and temporary over voltage. Traditionally, the Effective Short Circuit Ratio (ESCR) has been used to indicate system strength. However, this index cannot be directly applied when power-electronics based converters are used to provide the reactive power support. The approach of this paper is to use an improved form of the ‘Apparent increase in Short Circuit Ratio’ (AISCR) index to quantify the impact of the compensator on the HVdc system. This index is evaluated by comparing the performance with the reactive power device with a system without the device, but having the same performance. The paper shows that a single AISCR index cannot quantify all behaviors and suggest modifications to AISCR for each of several HVdc phenomena. Negative-sequence current is required to be intentionally injected to support the power grid or compensate the imbalanced load in asymmetrical faults utilizing STATCOM. However, the extreme compensation range of negative-sequence current injection becomes complicated when grid voltage becomes asymmetrical. This article presents a novel off-line strategy for negative-sequence current compensation under two typical kinds of asymmetrical grid faults — single-phase voltage drop and double-phase voltage drop, with the following two benefits simultaneously: maximizing negative current compensation capacity; avoiding iterations and reducing computation burdens. In this paper, the mechanism of DC voltage balancing among three phases in STATCOM is analyzed and a new identification method of negative-sequence current compensation range is explored out. To simplify the calculation, this paper takes the ratio of negative-sequence reactive (Iq-) and active (Id-) current as a variable (s). In this way, the relationship between the extreme compensation range, asymmetrical voltage sag depth of power grid h is drawn with MATLAB. Different from the previous iterative method, the off-line identification method is applied to avoid huge iterations. By fitting the curve, the precise ranges of negative-sequence current compensation under different asymmetrical grid faults are approximated as simple polynomials, thus significantly reducing the computation burdens. Sub/Super-synchronous oscillations have occurred in wind farms consisting of doubly-fed induction generators (DFIGs) or permanent magnet synchronous generators (PMSGs). This paper investigates the impact of synchronous condenser (SC) on sub/super-synchronous oscillations in wind farms with different types of generator and compares it with STATCOM. Impedance model is adopted in this paper to explain the mechanism of oscillations in wind farms and its mitigation using SC. Compared to STATCOM, SC is more effective in oscillation mitigations of the two types of wind farms. Eigenvalue analysis and time domain simulations in PSCAD/EMTDC are used to check the influence on sub/super-synchronous oscillations from different parameters of SC, such as its capacity, leakage reactance and inertia constant. The results indicate that SC would improve the system stability while a larger capacity will induce a greater improvement. This paper investigates the Multilevel Current Source Converter (MCSC) STATCOM. It proposes a new method of modulation. The new modulation method produces less THD and di/dt at the terminals of the MCSC STATCOM when compared to the widely used Phase-Shifted Carrier SPWM (PSC-SPWM). To ensure the inductors' currents remain balanced, a Current Balancing Algorithm (CBA) is presented. The CBA does not require any controls. It relies on assigning optimum switching states to each CSC module in real-time. In addition, two control strategies are presented in this paper. The first one assumes the STATCOM to be a SISO. Therefore, it only requires one PI controller. However, the gains for the controller must be changed if the STATCOM was to transition from capacitive mode to inductive mode, or vice versa. The second control strategy overcomes this problem by implementing a TITO integral state feedback controller. The contributions of this paper are validated via simulation and experimental results. The delta-connected cascaded H-bridge converter has been applied to compensate flicker and unbalance load to meet power quality requirement. Based on the detailed power analysis, this paper presents a dc capacitor voltage-balancing technique for the converter. This paper also proposes a current limit control technique to avoid overstressing the power semiconductor devices of the converter. This paper presents the flexible dc capacitor voltages balancing control method for star-connected cascaded H-bridge converters. In this paper, the power flows are analyzed by investigating all the converter's control freedoms. Based on the analyses, users can accomplish the dc capacitor voltage balancing with both negative-sequence current and zero-sequence voltage. These two kinds of control options are further integrated together with the defined weighting factor $K$. The low-voltage ride-through operation of a proposed control method is also discussed in this paper. The control method is verified with a 220-V 1-kVA static synchronous compensators based on the star-connected cascaded H-bridge converters, and the experimental test results show that all the dc voltages are well regulated at the commanded value with different weighting factor $K$. In this paper, a current controller for a parallel operation of inverters is described. When inverters operate in parallel, it is a well-known fact that the inverter current is composed of the average current (AVC) and the zero-sequence circulating current (henceforth ZSCC), which inevitably flows between inverters under the parallel operation. Considering this, previous studies concentrated on reducing ZSCC. However, in this paper, it is found that the inverter current has another component, a differential current, in addition to the two components of AVC and ZSCC. Based on these three decomposed current components, three equivalent circuits are derived from n-paralleled inverters. To minimize the differential current and improve the regulation performance of the total output phase current, a decomposed current control scheme is proposed from equivalent circuit models. The proposed algorithm is applied to a system consisting of three paralleled two-level inverters with small shared inductance whose dc links are connected in common. Additionally, synchronous pulsewidth modulation is employed as the PWM method for each inverter. The proposed current controller is compared with two conventional current controllers, one where each inverter controls its own currents and the other where only AVC is controlled. Through experiments, it is shown that these conventional controllers have limitations and the proposed current controller overcomes these limitations. The effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed control scheme are verified through experimental results. This paper examines the application of STATCOM and battery energy storage to enhance the transient stability of large-scale multimachine power systems with synchronous and doubly-fed induction generators (DFIGs). A passivity-based control design method [interconnection and damping assignment passivity-based control (IDA-PBC)] is developed for multimachine power systems and its performance is evaluated on a two-area system consisting of two synchronous generators (SGs) and two DFIG along with STATCOM/battery energy storage system. The main contributions of this paper are threefold: 1) use of a STATCOM and battery energy storage system to enhance transient stability and provide voltage regulation with SG and DFIG; 2) demonstrating the application of nonlinear control theory (specifically the IDA-PBC methodology) for the design of a stabilizing feedback controller in large-scale power systems to improve transient system performance; and 3) developing a methodology that can use the additional degrees of freedom in large-scale power systems in order to further improve system performance, in particular the transient stability margin [measured through critical clearing time (CCT)] and the dynamic transient performance of the system. In order to achieve power angle stability along with the simultaneous regulation of frequency and voltage, the performance of the proposed control scheme after the occurrence of large disturbances is evaluated and compared with a conventional power system stabilizer and a feedback linearizing controller. This paper presents application guidelines for a new generic plant controller model that can be used for renewable plant dynamic system analysis that may include the control of static compensators (STATCOMs), static var compensators (SVCs), and/or energy storage devices. The authors originally presented the need for such a model to the Western Electricity Coordinating Council (WECC) and contributed to various stages of the new model development led by WECC. As Independent System Operators (ISOs)/Regional Reliability Organizations (RTOs)/Transmission Service Providers (TSPs) are moving toward acceptance and use of generic models only the authors have for the first time applied this new model for an operating renewable plant. The new model was configured, parameterized, and tuned to control two STATCOMs and multiple switched capacitors/reactors to represent a master/auxiliary control strategy as implemented in the plant. Dynamic simulations show that the configured and parameterized model is performing properly as expected. This tuned model was submitted to the system operator for compliance with the interconnection requirements of the plant. This is the first submission of the new generic model for this type of control for a renewable project. The submitted model is appropriate for dynamic simulations, which are routinely performed by ISOs/RTOs/TSPs in system impact studies or transmission planning studies. This paper proposes a distributed coordinated voltage control scheme for distribution networks with distributed generation (DG) and on-load tap changer (OLTC). In this scheme, static synchronous compensators (STATCOMs), DG units and OLTC are coordinated to regulate voltages of all buses to be close to the nominal value in the distribution network, mitigate voltage fluctuations, and minimize the number of operations of OLTC while considering different temporal characteristics of voltage regulation devices. The optimization problem of coordinating DG units and STATCOMs is decomposed by the gradient projection (GP) method. The local controller optimizes the reactive power outputs of DGs and STATCOMs according to local voltage and reactive power measurements, and still achieves the optimal coordination of DG units and STATCOMS in a decentralized manner without a central controller or communication between local controllers. The OLTC control scheme is designed to correct the long-term voltage deviations based on model predictive control (MPC) while minimizing the number of operations. The local controllers send the calculated reactive power references of DG and STATCOMs to the OLTC controller, which achieves distributed coordinated voltage control and mitigates the computation burden. This paper presents a new control strategy for a distributed static compensator (also known as distributed STATCOM or DSTATCOM), configured to regulate the reactive (VAr) flow at a point in a transmission system. This new control strategy takes into account the operating VAr limits of that reactive flow in determining the steady-state output of the DSTATCOM. The new control strategy applies a slow reset regulator (SRR) to slowly bias the VAr set point of the DSTATCOM master controller to maintain its steady-state output within a target bandwidth. The operating result maintains an appropriate VAr reserve level from the DSTATCOM for dynamic events in the system. This paper also presents a new algorithm to calculate the operating constraints of the SRR that reflect the VAr flow at the local or remote point in the transmission system and the allowable VAr thresholds for that flow. These allowable thresholds can be utilized to the full extent to lower the steady-state output of the DSTATCOM, maximize its VAr reserve for dynamic events and reduce equipment and associated system operating losses. The unified power flow controller (UPFC) helps to control the power flow, but its outage due to the abnormal state is a threat to power systems. In this paper, based on the proportion of the random failure, the transition rates of the abnormal state are newly derived. The impact of the routine test (RT) on the transition rates is quantified. The state space models of the UPFC based on voltage-source converter (VSC) and modular multilevel converter (MMC) are extended with the states introduced by the RT. The frequency and duration method is used to aggregate the states. The sensitivities of the availability and outage frequency of the UPFC with respect to the failure rates of the components are newly derived to find the vulnerable component and the optimal RT interval. High penetrations of renewable energy sources (RES) in distribution grids lead to new challenges in voltage regulation. These challenges are not just limited to the steady-state voltage rise, but they are extended to rapid voltage changes due to wind speed variations and moving clouds, casting shadows on photovoltaic panels. According to EN50160 in low-voltage (LV) grids, the steady-state voltage should not exceed 1.1 pu (static characteristic), and rapid voltage changes should be kept less than 0.05 pu (dynamic characteristic). These two characteristics may limit the maximum amount of RES that can be installed in LV grids, called, respectively, the static hosting capacity (SHC) and dynamic hosting capacity (DHC). Although existing research just evaluated SHC in distribution grids, high-penetrated RES grids can be faced with such large voltage changes, which cause a smaller DHC than the SHC. This paper studies both SHC and DHC in distribution grids and proposes an adaptive controller for static synchronous compensators to regulate the steady-state and dynamic voltage while avoiding the unnecessary increase in the reactive power. This paper proposes an open-delta operation as the fault-tolerant control strategy for the delta-connected cascaded converter. Based on the detailed power analysis, the fault-tolerant control enables continued operation and maintains dc capacitor voltages balancing during the occurrence of bridge cells fail. With the integration of intermittent renewable generation, transmission voltage problems have become more dynamic. The deployment and tuning of numbers of VAr compensators at various locations may not be cost-effective. This paper presents an alternative method, which utilizes existing parallel transformers in distribution networks, to provide reactive power absorption services for transmission systems with low demands. The operation of parallel transformers in small different tap positions, that is, with staggered taps, can provide a means of absorbing reactive power. The aggregated VAr absorption from many pairs of parallel transformers could be used to provide voltage support to the upstream transmission network. This paper focuses on the economic and technical analyses of using the tap staggering method. For the economic analysis, the associated costs of applying the tap staggering technique are investigated through static load-flow studies. The IEEE Reliability Test System is used to carry out the studies and the results are compared with the installation of shunt reactors. In the technical studies, the dynamic impacts of tap staggering or reactor switching on transmission voltages are analyzed. In this paper, a static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) operation scheme of the modular multilevel converter adopting clamp double submodules (CDSM-MMC) during a pole-to-pole dc fault is proposed. By analyzing the current paths of a CDSM, this paper proposes three new operation states of the CDSM, which allow the CDSM to provide bipolar voltages when the arm current that flows through it is negative. Through control of the CDSMs to operate in these new states along with the blocked state, the arms of the CDSM-MMC can operate alternately in two different modes, that is, the conducting mode and blocked mode even when the dc-link voltage drops to zero. Thus, the CDSM-MMC is capable of working as a STATCOM during a dc fault. Moreover, a control strategy of the dc-fault STATCOM operation mode is designed to control the reactive power provided by the CDSM-MMC, to limit the dc fault current, and to reserve and balance the energies stored in capacitors. Simulation results conducted in PSCAD/EMTDC demonstrate the validity of the proposed STATCOM operation scheme and control strategy of the CDSM-MMC during a pole-to-pole dc fault. This paper proposes a hybrid static synchronous compensator (hybrid-STATCOM) in a three-phase power transmission system that has a wide compensation range and low dc-link voltage. Because of these prominent characteristics, the system costs can be greatly reduced. In this paper, the circuit configuration of hybrid-STATCOM is introduced first. Its V–I characteristic is then analyzed, discussed, and compared with traditional STATCOM and capacitive-coupled STATCOM (C-STATCOM). The system parameter design is then proposed on the basis of consideration of the reactive power compensation range and avoidance of the potential resonance problem. After that, a control strategy for hybrid-STATCOM is proposed to allow operation under different voltage and current conditions, such as unbalanced current, voltage dip, and voltage fault. Finally, simulation and experimental results are provided to verify the wide compensation range and low dc-link voltage characteristics and the good dynamic performance of the proposed hybrid-STATCOM. This paper presents a novel day-and-night control of large PV solar farm as STATCOM, termed PV-STATCOM, for FIDVR alleviation. The proposed control involves dynamic modulation of both reactive and real power during day, and of reactive power during night. The active and reactive power output of solar farm are based on the sensitivity of solar plant voltage to active and reactive power injections. Enhanced voltage control up to utility Transient Overvoltage Limit is utilized. Eigenvalue analysis is done to study the sensitivity of proposed controller performance to various power system and PV plant parameters. Extensive PSCAD simulation studies of FIDVR are performed in a realistic power transmission system with large-scale PV plant and comprehensive IM loads. It is shown that the proposed PV-STATCOM control: (i) mitigates FIDVR even if solar farm is located more than 100 km from motor loads, (ii) is more effective than reactive power support required by German Grid Code, (iii) is equally effective as a STATCOM connected locally at motor loads, and (iv) stabilizes motors at night which is beyond Grid Code requirements. The safe operation of grid-connected power converters during abnormal condition is a key issue in order to guarantee operation and to avoid undesired trips. In this paper, different control strategies for the operation of a D-STATCOM are introduced, where the reference currents are determined in such a way that not only will none of the phase currents go over the limits, but also the dc voltage fluctuations remain in safe operation limits. Fluctuating active power interchange during unbalanced condition leads to dc voltage oscillation. Severe unbalanced condition and small dc capacitor selection (to meet the size and cost constraints) intensify the dc voltage oscillation. Therefore, the contribution of this paper relies on the combination of the dc voltage oscillations and the current limit control. The effectiveness of three proposed control strategies is verified by simulating a D-STATCOM tied to an industrial distribution network. Supporting the grid and improving its reliability have recently become major requirements for large distributed generation units. Under most grid faults, the accuracy of the traditional voltage support schemes (VSSs) is dramatically affected due to the existence of the zero-sequence voltage. Also, the traditional VSSs have been used only in the STATCOM applications, where the active power is zero. This paper proposes an advanced VSS in the converter-interfaced units, called zero-sequence compensated voltage support (ZCVS), to accurately regulate the three-phase voltages of the connection point within the pre-set safety limits. The proposed scheme not only compensates the zero-sequence component but also considers the active power injection. Unlike the traditional methods, the proposed VSS is adapted even in resistive distribution systems. The contribution of this paper is, however, ternate. As the second contribution, the limited active power oscillation (LAPO) is proposed to be augmented to the ZCVS. This feature limits the oscillation to a specified value which provides an adjustable dc-link voltage oscillation setting while simultaneously supporting the ac host grid, even under severe unbalanced faults. Third, the maximum active power delivery (MAPD) to the ac grid is also formulated for the ZCVS. This paper presents an adaptive harmonic current extraction scheme using notch filters combined with a modified discrete wavelet-packet transform (DWPT). The scheme is applied to an MMCC-STATCOM for mitigating current harmonics distortion in a power line. The modified DWPT incorporates a data expansion technique to overcome the limitations of boundary effect. It identifies the rms values of the dominant harmonic elements of the non-stationary current in real-time, these being used to update the order and stop-frequency of a notch filter chain. This adaptive notch filter is embedded in the current control system for the MMCC-STATCOM to generate reference current. The results have shown that the modified DWPT tracks harmonic changes faster and more accurately than the conventional method. This paper presents a new power electronic topology for a STATCOM allowing the generation of multilevel AC voltages. This topology is characterized by a modular configuration since it uses two well known four-leg two-level voltage source inverters. A Scott transformer with multiple secondary windings connects the two four-leg inverters to the grid. One of the important features of the proposed power topology is the capability to generate AC voltages with high number of levels, in spite of using only two four-leg two-level voltage source inverters. To maximize the number of voltage levels a geometric progression ratio of 3 between the windings of the transformers connected in cascade is proposed. However, to reduce the turns-ratio span, alternatively a fractional geometric ratio of 1.5 is also proposed and analyzed. A control strategy adapted to the proposed power converter topology is also presented. Besides the control of the reactive power the regulation of the four-leg inverter DC voltage will also be considered. To support the theoretical studies and assumptions, simulations and experiments are presented. Experimental results were obtained using a low power laboratory prototype. This paper proposes a dc-link voltage shaping method for a cascaded H-bridge (CHB) static synchronous compensator (STATCOM). A recently proposed low capacitance-STATCOM system, which intentionally operates with large voltage ripples on the dc-link capacitors, offers the advantage of superior harmonic performance. However, the capacitor voltage ripples decrease when operating at below-rated reactive current, which removes the aforementioned harmonic performance benefit of this system. In addition, such harmonic performance benefit is only achieved in capacitive operation mode. In order to expand the operating region where advantageous voltage ripples are present, a new voltage shaping method is proposed. The proposed method uses a CHB multilevel converter coupled with simple dc–dc converters to shape voltage ripples on the dc-link capacitor regardless of its operating point. This is achieved by controlling the average current of the dc–dc converter using model predictive control. The concept is best applied to an enhanced STATCOM, or E-STATCOM, application in which the STATCOM is integrated with either a renewable energy source or energy storage system. The algorithm complexity of model predictive control (MPC) for cascaded H-bridge (CHB) static synchronous compensators (STATCOMs) was optimized to a polynomial level in previous studies. However, implementing MPC with conventional approaches still suffers from long execution time, where a low cost digital signal processor (DSP) is used to execute optimization algorithms and a small-sized field-programmable gate array (FPGA) is used to extend gate signals and sampling functions. This paper presents a parallel implementation approach to reduce the execution time of MPC, where the FPGA is configured to be used for accelerating the high-complexity sorting tasks. By running the DSP and FPGA in parallel, the algorithm execution time is only determined by the DSP, and the resource consumption is only determined by the FPGA. To minimize the resource consumption and requirement in FPGA, a parallel comparison-based sorter with multiple comparison and accumulators is proposed. The proposed implementation method can reduce the time and space complexity of the MPC from the polynomial level to a linear level without additional hardware cost, which means the MPC for medium-voltage CHB STATCOMs (e.g., 20 stages) can be implemented online with existing control platforms. In this paper, a static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) is proposed in which a new modular structure with conventional three-phase voltage source inverters is used to multilevel operation. The inverters are connected to a transformer in an open-end winding configuration and with three independent DC links. In this structure, the inverters will be connected in a cascade configuration. Besides the multilevel operation, the system is also characterized by low required blocking voltages for switch ratings, since the proposed STATCOM can apply the double of the DC capacitor voltage to the transformer windings. The development of the control system for the proposed topology is also presented. In this paper, a simple static var compensating scheme using a cascaded two-level inverter-based multilevel inverter is proposed. The topology consists of two standard two-level inverters connected in cascade through open-end windings of a three-phase transformer. The dc-link voltages of the inverters are regulated at different levels to obtain four-level operation. The simulation study is carried out in MATLAB/SIMULINK to predict the performance of the proposed scheme under balanced and unbalanced supply-voltage conditions. A laboratory prototype is developed to validate the simulation results. The control scheme is implemented using the TMS320F28335 digital signal processor. STATCOM can provide fast and efficient reactive power support to maintain power system voltage stability. In the literature, various STATCOM control methods have been discussed including many applications of proportional-integral (PI) controllers. However, these previous works obtain the PI gains via a trial-and-error approach or extensive studies with a tradeoff of performance and applicability. Hence, control parameters for the optimal performance at a given operating point may not be effective at a different operating point. This paper proposes a new control model based on adaptive PI control, which can self-adjust the control gains during a disturbance such that the performance always matches a desired response, regardless of the change of operating condition. Since the adjustment is autonomous, this gives the plug-and-play capability for STATCOM operation. In the simulation test, the adaptive PI control shows consistent excellence under various operating conditions, such as different initial control gains, different load levels, change of transmission network, consecutive disturbances, and a severe disturbance. In contrast, the conventional STATCOM control with tuned, fixed PI gains usually perform fine in the original system, but may not perform as efficient as the proposed control method when there is a change of system conditions. This paper presents the optimal power flow (OPF) formulation of a recent power flow STATCOM model refid="ref1"/. The new model puts forward an alternative, insightful interpretation of the fundamental frequency operation of the PWM-controlled voltage source converter (VSC), in an optimal fashion. The new model makes provisions for the explicit representation of the converter's internal ohmic and switching losses which in the context of an OPF formulation, yields an optimum operating point at which these power losses are at a minimum. The STATCOM model possesses unparalleled control capabilities in the operational parameters of both the AC and DC sides of the converter. Such control modeling flexibility is at its best when expressed in the context of an OPF solution using Newton's method. The STATCOM equations are incorporated into the OPF formulation using Lagrangian functions in quite a natural manner for efficient optimal solutions using a single frame-of-reference. This paper presents new series grid interface topologies for enhancing the low voltage ridethrough capability of self-excited induction generator-based wind turbines. Two proposed schemes: static synchronous series compensator (SSSC) and controllable series braking resistor (CSBR) have been designed and simulated. The test system simulated represents a wind turbine connected to an electric grid with alternatively employing SSSC and CSBR. The potential of the two schemes is evaluated and analyzed using positive and negative-sequence reference frames in response to balanced and unbalanced fault scenarios. The simulation results using PSCAD/EMTDC demonstrate the performance of the proposed schemes for improving the fault ridethrough capability and transient stability margin in response to severe symmetrical and asymmetrical grid faults. The schemes have shown successful and fast mitigation of voltage disturbance consequences on the mechanical system. A new static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) based on the diode-clamped modular multilevel converter (DCM2 C) is proposed in this paper. In this converter topology, the capacitor voltage is clamped by using a low power rating diode in each submodule. The quantity of voltage sensors is significantly reduced and is free from the number of voltage levels. Furthermore, the voltage balancing control method becomes very simple and the capacitor voltage balance speed is fast. Based on the structure of modular multilevel converter, the DCM2C-STATCOM has the capability of Var compensation and negative-sequence current compensation. The topology characteristics and compensation control method of DCM2C-STATCOM are investigated in this paper. As more distributed renewable energy sources are installed in the utility grid, the static synchronous compensators are applied to manage the power factor and the grid voltage in the medium-voltage level of the power system. The cascaded multilevel converter with single-star topology is well applied to this application. The dc-capacitor voltage balancing control is a fundamental issue, and it can be accomplished by negative-sequence current and/or zero sequence voltage injection. Unfortunately, the zero sequence voltage injection increases the risk of over-modulation and the negative-sequence current injection results in high peak current. This paper provides the voltage balancing strategy to manage the peak current or the modulation index. Besides, all the asymmetrical grid voltages are considered in the proposed method to satisfy the grid fault operation. With the increasing deployment of offshore wind power plants (WPPs), the grid-forming (GFM) battery energy storage system (BESS) has recently emerged as an attractive solution to improve the dynamic performances of WPPs. However, the control interactions of the GFM-BESS and offshore WPP, under different grid strengths, tend to complicate the controller-parameter tuning. This paper presents a modeling method for analyzing control interactions of offshore WPP and GFM-BESS, which sheds clear insights into the critical controller parameters to the system dynamics. Differing from conventional methods, a frequency-domain model of GFM-BESS, obtained by taking the Laplace transform of the corresponding state-space model, is developed first. This allows the impedance model of offshore WPP, including a black-box model of long transmission cable, to be flexibly integrated. Based on the model, both closed-loop transfer-function and pole-based dynamic analyses are then performed. This paper introduces a computationally efficient surrogate model-based approach for tolerance analysis of power systems. Surrogate models are heuristic, simple representations of complex systems that are obtained through an automated sensitivity analysis of electromagnetic transient simulations results. These simpler models are shown in this paper to be significantly faster than full-detail simulation models to obtain accurate statistical tolerance information about complex power networks. Usefulness of the proposed approach is demonstrated by two application examples. In the first example, surrogate models are used for determining the statistical distribution of undesired remnant harmonics produced by a voltage-source converter, given the uncertainty in the firing angles. This paper presents the application of a modular multilevel cascade converter based on single-delta bridge cells (SDBCs) to a STATic synchronous COMpensator (STATCOM), particularly for negative-sequence reactive-power control. The SDBC is characterized by cascade connection of multiple single-phase H-bridge (or full bridge) converter cells per leg, thus facilitating flexible circuit design, low-voltage steps, and low-electromagnetic-interference emissions. This paper designs, constructs, and tests a 100-V 5-kVA pulsewidth-modulated STATCOM based on the SDBC, with focus on the operating principle and performance. Among the various topologies proposed in this literature, the modular multilevel converter (MMC) is considered the next generation of converters for medium- and high-voltage applications. This paper presents a comparison between two variants of MMCs for STATCOM applications: The double-star chopper cell-MMC and the single-delta bridge cell-MMC. These converter topologies are compared and benchmarked during positive and negative sequence compensation. The comparisons are supported by analytical results regarding minimum effective dc-link voltage, number of cells, current rating, energy storage requirements, and operation during unbalanced conditions. The finite control set model predictive control (FCS-MPC) for power electronic converters provides high dynamic performance, based on the limited number of inputs and accurate model of the converter. By applying this algorithm to multilevel converters such as a cascaded-H-bridge-based static var compensator (CHB STATCOM), the dynamic performance is degraded, because the optimized input is achieved by searching among a large set of switching combinations and redundancies. This paper proposes an FCS-MPC algorithm, which benefits high dynamic performance for the CHB STATCOM, despite the large set of inputs. The proposed FCS-MPC replaces the time-consuming optimization algorithm by solving Diophantine equations over the large set of switching combinations. The desired switching combination and all its redundancies are determined in a minimum execution time. The proposed FCS-MPC performance is validated by applying to two configurations: 1) a 15-level CHB STATCOM with energy storage capability for a short-term active power smoothing and reactive power compensation of a 10 MW fixed speed wind farm at medium voltage; and 2) an experimental seven-level CHB STATCOM at low voltage. In this paper, we present a comprehensive study on sensor-assisted video encoding (SaVE) schemes for video capturing on mobile devices in real-world environments. Our purpose is to reduce the computational complexity of video encoding by leveraging sensors that are increasingly available on mobile devices, e.g., accelerometers and digital compasses. Motion estimation is a key component of video encoding. In this paper, SaVE calculates the rotational movement of a camera (on mobile devices) and then infers the global motion in the camera imager. SaVE subsequently employs the estimated global motion as predictors to simplify motion estimation algorithms for state-of-the-art H.264/AVC video coding. We have constructed a prototype of SaVE and evaluated its performance with a pair of accelerometers, a digital compass, and their combination. Our experimental results show that SaVE can significantly reduce the computations of motion estimation while achieving equal or better video quality. This paper proposes a delta-connected Modular Multilevel STATCOM with partially rated storage (PRS-STATCOM), capable of providing both reactive, and active power support. The purpose is to provide short-term energy storage enabled grid support services such as inertial, and frequency response, either alongside or temporarily instead of standard STATCOM voltage support. The topology proposed here contains two types of sub-modules (SM) in each phase-leg: standard sub-modules (STD-SMs), and energy storage element sub-modules (ESE-SMs) with a dc-dc interface converter between the SM capacitor, and the ESE. A control structure has been developed that allows energy transfer between the SM capacitor, and the ESE resulting in active power exchange between the converter, and the grid. Injecting $\text{3}^{rd}$ harmonic current into the converter waveforms can be used to increase the amount of power that can be extracted from the ESE-SMs, and so reduce the required ESE-SMs fraction in each phase-leg. Simulation results demonstrate that for three selected active power ratings, 1 pu, $\frac{2}{3}$ pu, and $\frac{1}{3}$ pu, the fraction of SMs that need be converted to ESE-SMs are only 69%, 59% & 38%. This paper proposes a potential distributed reactive power compensation method in dc traction power systems with reversible substations. It utilizes the entire capacity of reversible substations during night hours and the reminding capacity except for regenerative braking energy feedback during day hours. A unified dispatch scheme is developed to allocate reactive power compensation capacity for each reversible substation. During night hours the entire capacity is used to accomplish the optimal power flow objective. During day hours the excess capacity after active power production is used to improve the system reactive power factor dynamically. The different objectives throughout the day are implemented in a unified formula which avoids manually change. In addition the outage of reversible substations and the low dc voltage conditions are considered and an over-modulation suppression strategy is included in the unified dispatch scheme to adjust the reactive power allocation among reversible substations. This novel utilization method of reversible substations is able to provide significant improvements in the power factor of dc traction power systems which would otherwise require expensive additional equipment such as static synchronous compensator. This paper presents a passivity-based control (PBC) for a type 2 static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) based on an Euler-Lagrange model. The proposed method is designed based on a Lyapunov function by considering dissipation to improve transient performance. An additional nonlinear damping term is designed to regulate the capacitor voltage. It is guaranteed that the equilibrium point of the system is locally exponentially stable in the operating range. The performance of the proposed method is validated via a 100 Mvar STATCOM system connected to the 345-kV grid system in SimPowerSystems, MATLAB/Siumlink. To compare with the input-output feedback linearization method, the proposed control method has improved convergence and reduction of oscillations of the active current and DC voltage, as shown in simulation results. This paper presents a study on a control strategy for active vibration cancellation (AVC) and noise reduction in switched reluctance (SR) motors. It has been revealed that two-stage commutation control based on the natural frequency of the stator body has been effective in suppressing the vibration occurring on the stator body at the commutation. According to some considerations on the generation mechanism of the vibration, a new AVC control for variable-speed SR motor drives under digital PWM control is proposed. Experimental studies using a 12-kW three-phase 12/8 SR motor demonstrate that the proposed two-step commutation control using negative voltage PWM is much effective as an AVC and noise reduction technique. In high power applications, 3-phase ac/dc Voltage Source Converters (VSCs) are paralleled to increase the overall aggregated converter power rating, effective switching frequency and control bandwidth. For this, interleaved Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) and current limiting paralleling inductors are required. Interphase Transformers (ITRs) are often used for the converter paralleling because they provide large magnetizing inductances for the currents flowing between the converters while introducing negligible leakage inductances for the currents flowing from the converters to the ac grid. This large asymmetry in the inductance values makes it difficult to independently control active power flows in the individual converters. Thus, if the converters dc buses are not mutually interconnected, instabilities in active control of balance of converter dc bus voltages can occur in certain operational conditions. This paper presents a theoretical analysis of the active power flows produced by the currents flowing among the converters and explains origins of potential instability in the active control of balance of dc bus voltages in multi-converter systems with floating dc buses, paralleled using the ITRs. This paper presents a novel concept of utilizing a photovoltaic (PV) solar farm inverter as STATCOM, called PV-STATCOM, for improving stable power transfer limits of the interconnected transmission system. The entire inverter rating of the PV solar farm, which remains dormant during nighttime, is utilized with voltage and damping controls to enhance stable power transmission limits. During daytime, the inverter capacity left after real power production is used to accomplish the aforementioned objective. Transient stability studies are conducted on a realistic single machine infinite bus power system having a midpoint located PV-STATCOM using EMTDC/PSCAD simulation software. The PV-STATCOM improves the stable transmission limits substantially in the night and in the day even while generating large amounts of real power. Power transfer increases are also demonstrated in the same power system for: 1) two solar farms operating as PV-STATCOMs and 2) a solar farm as PV-STATCOM and an inverter-based wind farm with similar STATCOM controls. This novel utilization of a PV solar farm asset can thus improve power transmission limits which would have otherwise required expensive additional equipment, such as series/shunt capacitors or separate flexible ac transmission system controllers. This paper provides an experimental discussion on zero-voltage-ride-through (ZVRT) capability of a phase-shifted pulsewidth-modulation distribution static synchronous compensator (D-STATCOM) using the modular multilevel cascade converter based on single-star bridge cells (SSBC). The cluster-balancing control producing a significant effect on the ZVRT capability is modeled and analyzed with focus on either a low-pass filter (LPF) or a moving-average filter (MAF) to attenuate the 100-Hz (double the line frequency) component inherent in each dc capacitor voltage. The cluster-balancing control using the MAF is better in transient performance than that using the LPF. A three-phase downscaled SSBC-based D-STATCOM rated at 150 V and 10 kVA is designed, constructed, and tested to verify the ZVRT capability under the severest single-, two-, and three-phase voltage sags with a voltage depth of 100%. This paper presents and discusses a phase-shifted-PWM distribution static synchronous compensator (D-STATCOM) using the modular multilevel cascade converter based on single-star bridge cells (MMCC-SSBC). A three-phase 140-V 10-kVA SSBC-based STATCOM with a cascade count $N=6$ is designed, constructed, and tested for verifying the performance and functionality of the medium-voltage D-STATCOM in both steady and transient states. The 13-level line-to-neutral (25-level line-to-line) voltage at the ac side yields an almost sinusoidal line current with a total harmonic distortion value of 1.7%. An analytical model for the phase-shifted PWM is proposed to design the current control gains. Two phase-shifted PWM methods, which are named as one-cell and all-cells update methods, are theoretically and experimentally compared. This paper deals with the design of an adaptive power oscillation damping (POD) controller for a static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) equipped with energy storage. This is achieved using a signal estimation technique based on a modified recursive least square (RLS) algorithm, which allows a fast, selective, and adaptive estimation of the low-frequency electromechanical oscillations from locally measured signals during power system disturbances. The proposed method is effective in increasing the damping of the system at the frequencies of interest, also in the case of system parameter uncertainties and at various connection points of the compensator. First, the analysis of the impact of active and reactive power injection into the power system will be carried out using a simple two-machine system model. A control strategy that optimizes active and reactive power injection at various connection points of the STATCOM will be derived using the simplified model. Small-signal analysis of the dynamic performance of the proposed control strategy will be carried out. The effectiveness of the proposed control method to provide power oscillation damping irrespective of the connection point of the device and in the presence of system parameter uncertainties will be verified through simulation and experimental results. This paper presents a new multilevel selective harmonic elimination pulse-width modulation (MSHE-PWM) technique for transformerless static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) system employing cascaded H-bridge inverter (CHI) configuration. The proposed MSHE-PWM method optimizes both the dc-voltage levels and the switching angles, enabling more harmonics to be eliminated without affecting the structure of the inverter circuit. The method provides constant switching angles and linear pattern of dc-voltage levels over the modulation index range. This in turns eliminates the tedious steps required for manipulating the offline calculated switching angles and therefore, easing the implementation of the MSHE-PWM for dynamic systems. Although the method relies on the availability of the variable dc-voltage levels which can be obtained by various topologies, however, the rapid growth and development in the field of power semiconductor devices led to produce high-efficiency dc-dc converters with a relatively high-voltage capacity and for simplicity, a buck dc-dc converter is considered in this paper. Current and voltage closed loop controllers are implemented for both the STATCOM and the buck converter to meet the reactive power demand at different loading conditions. The technique is further compared with an equivalent conventional carrier-based pulse-width modulation to illustrate its enhanced characteristics.
