In this paper, a hybrid switched-capacitor/switched-quasi-Z-source bidirectional dc–dc converter is proposed for electric vehicles (EVs) with hybrid energy sources, which has a wide voltage gain range in the bidirectional energy flows. Compared with the traditional quasi-Z-source bidirectional dc–dc converter, the proposed converter only changes the position of the main power switch and employs a switched-capacitor cell at the output of the high-voltage side. Therefore, the advantages of the wide voltage gain range and the lower voltage stresses across the power switches can be achieved. The operating principle, the voltage and current stresses across the power switches, and the comparisons with other converters are analyzed in detail. Furthermore, the parameter design of the main components, the dynamic modeling analysis, and the voltage control scheme are also presented. A simple buck–boost LED driver suitable for battery operated applications with limited input voltage level is presented in this paper. Soft switching performance is provided for the main switch via a resonant circuit to improve the converter efficiency. The incorporated auxiliary switch also performs under zero voltage switching condition. Both power switches can be driven with a simple gate drive circuit, so, the additional switch does not add any driving complexity. In addition, only one magnetic element is utilized in the proposed LED driver which contributes to circuit simplicity and lower weight and size. Also, all diodes turn off at zero current switching which eliminates the reverse recovery losses and improves efficiency. A laboratory prototype converting 12 V input voltage to 32 V output operating at 26 W output power is implemented and tested to verify the effectiveness of the proposed LED driver. A 1-φ hybrid nine-level inverter (H9LI) topology has been proposed in this paper. The proposed H9LI topology uses a simple phase disposition pulsewidth modulation strategy to generate nine-voltage levels in the output. The main advantage of this topology is that it has a low switch count (ten switches) compared to the existing nine-level inverter topologies. To regulate the voltage across auxiliary capacitor, two innovative control techniques are proposed, which are integrated with the inverter modulation technique itself. Hence, it does not require any extra voltage balancing circuits to maintain the voltage across the auxiliary capacitor and input dc capacitors. A major advantage of these control techniques is that they eliminate the sensing of the coupled inductor current. Another significant advantage of H9LI is that loss distribution among all the power switches is more uniform compared to existing nine-level inverters. Due to low part count and absence of extra voltage balancing circuits, the H9LI achieves higher efficiency (η ≍ 94.5%) and lower cost. Furthermore, the requirement of filter size reduces due to the presence of coupled inductor in H9LI. The voltage ratings for dc transmission and distribution are not currently standardized because cable technology is advancing rapidly and therefore a low step-ratio dc–dc converter at multi-megawatt scale is a crucial technology for combining point-to-point dc links into multi-terminal networks. This paper presents a modular multilevel dc–dc converter configuration with only a single stack of half-bridge sub-modules (SM) and a resonant tank. The power processed through the stack is a small fraction of the throughput power if the step ratio is small ($1 - {\boldsymbol{v}_{\boldsymbol{L}}}/{\boldsymbol{v}_{\boldsymbol{H}}}$). Detailed analysis shows the required semiconductor ratings are much smaller compared to the front-to-front MMC and modular converters derived from standard dc–dc topologies. Further, the requirement for SM capacitive energy storage is also significantly less than those converters. The theoretical analysis and the operating principles have been verified by full-scale simulation examples and experiments with a down-scaled prototype. The SMs are operated with an adjustable phase shift to create a high frequency excitation across the resonant tank for further volume reduction. The SM capacitors self-balance without the need for switching pattern adjustments and the resonant operation provides soft switching for all power switches to increase efficiency. In this paper, a novel space-vector pulsewidth modulation technique for a five-level active neutral-point clamped (5L-ANPC) inverter is proposed to eliminate the common-mode voltage (CMV). For the 5L-ANPC inverter, which produces a good output voltage performance and lowdv/dt, the total 125 voltage vectors can be generated, among which the proposed scheme employs only 19 voltage vectors producing a zero CMV. Due to the limitation of voltage vectors selected, the dc-link capacitor voltages of the 5L-ANPC inverter cannot be balanced by themselves. Therefore, the capacitor voltages of the inverter should be controlled by choosing the redundant switching states appropriately. High step-down voltage conversion is necessary to bridge the voltage gap between main power converters and low-voltage auxiliary electronics in power conversion systems. Switched capacitor converters (SCCs) are an attractive candidate as a high step-down converter, but their poor voltage regulation capability may limit their applications. Pulsewidth modulation (PWM) SCCs with adjustable high step-down voltage conversion are proposed in this paper. The proposed PWM SCCs can be derived from traditional SCCs by replacing an energy transfer capacitor with a switched-capacitor-inductor (SCL) cell that comprises inductors, capacitors, and diodes to realize PWM-controllable voltage conversion. The voltage step-down ratio of the proposed PWM SCCs is not only PWM controllable but also adjustable with structures of SCCs and SCL cells. This paper proposes a Class-DEMtuned power amplifier. The proposed amplifier achieves zero-voltage switching (ZVS), zero-voltage derivative switching (ZVDS), and zero-current switching (ZCS) at turning-on, and ZVS, ZVDS, ZCS, and zero-current derivative switching at turning-off. Therefore, the switching losses are extremely low, which is suitable for high-frequency operation. Moreover, the switch voltage stress is low, which is no more than its input voltage. A proposed amplifier was designed, built, and tested. In this paper, a family of step-up resonant switched-capacitor converters (RSCs) with a continuously adjustable conversion ratio is proposed based on the Cuk dual-resonance core (DRC) featuring two resonant paths. By adopting the on-time fixed frequency modulation, the two resonant paths can conduct simultaneously and satisfy the charge balance of the flying capacitor during the overlapping period. As a result, the conversion ratio—upper bounded by two determined by the circuit configuration—can vary continuously and efficiently even at the light load condition (1/10 of the rated power). A comprehensive analysis—the operation principle, voltage-gain curve, and voltage/current stresses—about the DRC is given. In addition, the Cuk DRC was extended to the series–parallel switched-capacitor converter (SCC), Fibonacci SCC, and voltage doubler to form a family of step-up RSCs, whose voltage-gain curves of different topologies are derived. Moreover, a characteristic comparison between the Cuk DRC and the traditional “direct” and “indirect” resonant core is given. Then, a 48 to 62–94.6 V resonant core with peak efficiency 97.8% and maximum power 120 W under the open loop condition was built. This paper proposes a voltage balancing method for stacked multicell converters (SMCs) based on phase-disposition pulse-width modulation (PD-PWM). In order to reduce the switching transitions of the power devices, only optimal transitions between consecutive voltage levels are used. Selection of the optimal transition sequence is performed by evaluating a cost function. Significant reductions in the switching transitions and power losses of the power devices are achieved as compared to the optimal-state voltage balancing method where nonoptimal transitions are allowed. Simulation and experimental results from a seven-level $3\times 2$ SMC verifies that the proposed PD-PWM voltage balancing method is robust under linear/nonlinear loads and transients. This paper presents a novel mitigation technique to reduce the effects of geomagnetically induced currents (GICs) on high-voltage power systems. The method consists of connecting switching devices at the neutral grounding connection point of transformer banks. Only one transformer bank needs to be grounded through a switch to reduce GIC in a two-terminal system. For multiterminal systems, n-1 switches are necessary and the operation is independent from each other. The switching frequency and the duty cycle are selected from a tradeoff between the effectiveness of the method and the detection of fault currents. Transient simulations on a two-bus 230/500 kV system show that the proposed switching at the neutral successfully mitigates the GIC. In this paper, selective harmonic mitigation (SHM) and selective harmonic elimination (SHE) modulation techniques have been combined to produce appropriate pulses for a four-leg three-level neutral point clamped (NPC) inverter. In the proposed hybrid method, the SHM technique is applied to phase legs in order to mitigate non-triplen harmonics (fifth, seventh, $\ldots$) , and the fourth leg is controlled by the SHE principle to eliminate important low-order triplen harmonics (third, ninth, $\ldots$) completely. In this context, it is demonstrated that using SHM instead of an SHE modulator for phase legs leads to a reduced vast range of harmonic orders in the NPC output voltage, significantly. Moreover, it is proved that the presented hybrid switching technique has the ability of dc-bus capacitor voltage balancing, inherently. Furthermore, analyses are performed to calculate the dc-bus capacitances accurately to show 5% voltage ripple acceptably. Simulation and experimental results validate a good dynamic performance of the proposed hybrid modulation technique in firing the NPC inverter switches to generate low-harmonic voltage waveforms supplying balanced and unbalanced loads while balancing the dc capacitor voltages in a four-wire network with small dc-link capacitors. Utility company standards for power quality are making it difficult for industrial users to start large induction and synchronous motors due to high inrush current. This paper will present a large oil company's challenges in starting large motors driven by the utility company in a relatively weak power system in East Texas while not violating the utility company's standards. A workable solution is an air-cooled pulsewidth-modulated voltage source variable-frequency drive system designed to start multiple large-horsepower medium-voltage synchronous motors without any measurable voltage flicker. Various combinations of motor design (induction versus synchronous) and starting methods are reviewed, and final design schematic diagrams are documented. This paper presents a power factor correction (PFC)-based bridgeless Luo (BL-Luo) converter-fed brushless dc (BLDC) motor drive. A single voltage sensor is used for the speed control of the BLDC motor and PFC at ac mains. The voltage follower control is used for a BL-Luo converter operating in discontinuous inductor current mode. The speed of the BLDC motor is controlled by an approach of variable dc-link voltage, which allows a low-frequency switching of the voltage source inverter for the electronic commutation of the BLDC motor, thus offering reduced switching losses. The proposed BLDC motor drive is designed to operate over a wide range of speed control with an improved power quality at ac mains. The power quality indices thus obtained are under the recommended limits of IEC 61000-3-2. This paper presents nonisolated single-switch high step-up converters with low voltage stress. Based on the conventional flyback converter, one single-switch high step-up converter is derived. The voltage stresses on the switch and diodes are limited by using a clamping diode and voltage doubler structure. Also, to further reduce the voltage stresses of them, another single-switch high step-up converter is proposed simply by using one additional capacitor and rearranging the components. Thus, lower voltage-rated switch and diodes can be used, which results in higher efficiency. The operational principle, analysis and design considerations of each converter are presented in this paper. V2Ic is a ripple-based control with an excellent performance for load transients and reference voltage tracking because it exhibits a feedforward of the load current and the error of the output voltage. However, if V2Ic is modulated with constant frequency, constant on-time or constant off-time, its dynamic response is hindered by delays in the response. This paper proposes a technique that synchronizes the clock of the converter to initialize the duty cycle when a worst-case load transient occurs using the current through the output capacitor to detect load transients. Affected by the equivalent series resistance (ESR) of the devices in the circuit, the voltage-conversion ratio of traditional boost converter is limited. Various topologies have been developed to provide a high step-up voltage gain. An inherent high voltage gain can be achieved in a dual-switch converter with the advantages of low voltage and current stress on the switches. However, this converter has a strict requirement of the parameters' consistency. This paper discusses the steady-state operation principle of the converter in detail under the condition that the parameters are inconsistent and then illustrates the solutions to balance the voltage on the switches and suppress the resonance with passive lossless clamping. Finally, a prototype has been established in the laboratory, and simulation and experimental results have been given to verify the analysis and the effectiveness of clamping method. This paper presents a merged-two-stage circuit topology suitable for either wide-range dc input voltage or ac line voltage at low-to-moderate power levels (e.g., up to 30 W). This two-stage topology is based on a soft-charged switched-capacitor preregulator/transformation stage and a high-frequency magnetic regulator stage. Soft charging of the switched capacitor circuit, zero voltage switching of the high-frequency regulator circuit, and time-based indirect current control are used to maintain high efficiency, high power density, and high power factor. The proposed architecture is applied to an LED driver circuit, and two implementations are demonstrated: a wide input voltage range dc-dc converter and a line interfaced ac-dc converter. The dc-dc converter shows 88%-96% efficiency at 30-W power across 25-200-V input voltage range, and the ac-dc converter achieves 88% efficiency with 0.93 power factor at 8.4-W average power. Contributions of this paper include: 1) demonstrating the value of a merged two-stage architecture to provide substantial design benefits in high-input voltage, low-power step down conversion applications, including both wide-range-input dc-dc and line-input ac-dc systems; 2) introduction of a multimode soft-charged SC stage for the merged architecture that enables compression of an 8:1 input voltage range into a 2:1 intermediate range, along with its implementation, loss considerations, and driving methods; and 3) merging of this topology with an resonant transition discontinuous-mode inverted buck stage and pseudocurrent control to enable step-down power conversion (e.g., for LED lighting) operating at greatly increased frequencies and reduced magnetics size than with more conventional approaches. This paper presents analytical expressions for the Class-E/F 3 power amplifier with a nonlinear shunt capacitor for satisfying the nonoptimum condition at 50% duty ratio. The design parameters for achieving the nonoptimum condition are expressed as a function of the phase shift and dc supply voltage. The Class-E/F 3 amplifier with nonoptimum condition increases one design degree of freedom compared with the optimum conditions. Because of the increase in the design degree of freedom, one more relationship can be specified as a design specification. The following parameters series reactance, peak switch voltage, output power capability, and maximum operating frequency are presented. Based on analytical results, an example of the Class E/F 3 at operating frequency of 4 MHz is analyzed. This paper deals with the design, analysis, simulation, and development of a power-factor-correction (PFC) multiple-output switched-mode power supply (SMPS) using a bridgeless buck–boost converter at the front end. Single-phase ac supply is fed to a pair of back-to-back-connected buck–boost converters to eliminate the diode bridge rectifier, which results in reduction of conduction losses and power quality improvement at the front end. The operation of the bridgeless buck–boost converter in discontinuous conduction mode ensures inherent PFC operation and reduces complexity in control. The performance of the proposed multiple-output SMPS is evaluated under varying input voltages and loads by simulating this circuit in MATLAB/Simulink environment, and the results obtained through simulation are validated experimentally on a developed prototype. Many publications have been presented on the modulation and control of the modular multilevel converter, some of which are based on phase-shifted carrier modulation. This paper presents an analysis of how the switching frequency affects the capacitor voltages, circulating currents, and alternating voltages using phase-shifted carrier modulation. It is found that switching frequencies that are integer multiples of the fundamental frequency should be avoided as they can cause the capacitor voltages to diverge. Suitable switching frequencies are derived for which the arm and line quantities will be periodic with symmetric operating conditions in the upper and lower arms. Thus, the practical outcome of this paper is a detailed description of how the switching frequency should be chosen in order to achieve advantageous operating conditions. In this paper, a simplified nearest level control balancing method for modular multilevel converter is presented. The proposed method neither requires individual sorting of the submodule voltages nor the redundancy of the switching states. Once the sorting of the submodules is done on the basis of the number of the submodules to be switched on, the identifications of the submodules can be carried out throughout the stages of the implementation of the this method. The proposed method also does not require the individual submodule status in the gate pulse generation stage. The gate logic in the presented method can be implemented with the help of the switching states of the voltage levels. Those simplifications and removing of the some of the stages by the proposed balancing method may ease and lead to the less processor time at the implementation level. The pictorial presentation further helps in consolidating the understanding of the different stages of the method. In this paper, a novel bidirectional modular multilevel dc-dc converter is proposed. The proposed topology, named the triangular modular multilevel dc-dc converter (TMMC), can achieve equal power sharing among its modules over a broad range of conversion ratios. The proposed control algorithm provides localized control of modules which enhances the converter's dynamic performance and design flexibility. A 1.7-kW experimental implementation of the converter is shown to achieve an efficiency of 95.9% and 96.2% in step-up and step-down modes, respectively. Significant reductions in the input current and output voltage ripples are observed through the interleaved operation of the converter. In this paper, by investigating the topology derivation principle of the phase-shift-controlled three-level dc/dc converters, the modular multilevel dc/dc converters, by integrating the full-bridge converters and three-level flying capacitor circuit, are proposed for the high step-down and high power dc-based systems. The high switch voltage stress in the primary side is effectively reduced by the full-bridge modules in series. Therefore, the low-voltage-rated power devices can be employed to obtain the benefits of low conduction losses. More importantly, the voltage autobalance ability among the cascaded modules is achieved by the inherent flying capacitor, which removes the additional possible active components or control loops. In addition, zero-voltage-switching performance for all the active switches can be provided due to the phase-shift control scheme, which can reduce the switching losses. This paper proposes a new diode-clamped multilevel inverter that can effectively balance the voltages of dc capacitors. For the proposed inverter, the inductors are inserted between the diodes and the main switches. Also, the voltage balance of the dc capacitors can be guaranteed by controlling the opening time of the corresponding main switches in particular modes. Thus, the parallel circuits on the dc side in the conventional inverters are canceled. Consequently, the proposed topology requires fewer switches, diodes, and capacitors, although it adds the compensation currents to the corresponding main switches. Integration of decoupling capacitors into silicon carbide (SiC) metal oxide semiconductor field effect transistor (mosfet) modules is an advanced solution to mitigate the effect of parasitic inductance induced by module assembly interconnects. In this paper, the switching transient behavior is reported for a 1.2-kV SiC mosfet module with embedded dc-link capacitors. It shows faster switching transition and less overshoot voltage compared to a module using an identical package but without capacitors. Active power cycling and passive temperature cycling are carried out for package reliability characterization and comparisons are made with commercial Si and SiC power modules. Scanning acoustic microscopy images and thermal structure functions are presented to quantify the effects of package degradation. The results demonstrate that the SiC modules with embedded capacitors have similar reliability performance to commercial modules and that the reliability is not adversely affected by the presence of the decoupling capacitors. This paper proposes a control method for a five-level hybrid flying-capacitor (5L-HFC) inverter, of which structure stems from the conventional five-level active neutral-point-clamped (5L-ANPC) topology by dividing the dc-link stage into three series-connected capacitors. In this inverter, the voltage stress on the power switches connected to the dc link is reduced by a half compared with that of the 5L-ANPC topology, thus the lower number of equally voltage-rated power devices can be employed. Also, the power losses in the 5L-HFC inverter are more evenly distributed than in the 5L-ANPC. In order to balance the dc-link capacitor voltages, a third-order harmonic offset injection is applied. When a diode rectifier is used to supply the dc bus voltage, the balancing method is not effective if the modulation index is higher than 0.64. Thus, an auxiliary circuit is needed to support the balancing of the dc-link capacitor voltages. However, the unbalancing problem can be overcome in a full-range operation without the auxiliary circuit if the back-to-back configuration is utilized. The five-level nested neutral-point-clamped (5L-NNPC) converter is one of the most promising topologies for medium-voltage (2.3–7.2 kV) high-power applications such as medium-voltage drives, wind energy conversion systems, and grid-connected systems. The 5L-NNPC requires a fewer number of switching devices, freewheeling and clamping diodes, and flying capacitors compared to the existing five-level multilevel converters. In the 5L-NNPC topology, each flying capacitor voltage is regulated at one-fourth of the dc-bus voltage to obtain the five-level operation. Due to the lack of redundant switching states, it is difficult to control the flying capacitor voltages by using the pulse-width-modulation-based classical control methods. This paper proposes a model-predictive current control (MPCC) approach to control the flying capacitor voltages along with the output currents of the 5L-NNPC converter. The discrete-time model of 5L-NNPC is developed to implement the MPCC scheme. The simulation and experimental studies are conducted to verify the dynamic and steady-state performance of 5L-NNPC with the MPCC scheme. The performance of the proposed MPCC approach is compared with the conventional space-vector-modulation-based voltage-balancing approach. This paper presents an overview of resonant and hybrid switched-capacitor converters with a particular focus on multimode operation. The multimode approach is discussed as a tool to affect high efficiency and power density across a wide load range, provide variable regulation, and, as a general framework, to conceptualize the advantages and opportunities of the approach compared to more traditional dc–dc converters. A general analysis is provided to quantify the advantage of hybrid and resonant converters that factors in the tradeoffs between size and loss in the magnetic component and voltage stress on the active devices. A broader set of operating modes is presented that spans continuous and discontinuous conduction and includes resonant, quasi-resonant, and more traditional buck- or boost-like operation. A prototype flying-capacitor multilevel converter is presented to demonstrate the variety of operating modes and motivate important considerations such as voltage balance on the flying capacitors. With the development of silicon carbide (SiC) power devices, the circuit structure of power converter for high-voltage applications would be simpler and more compact because the two-level-based topologies become applicable. This paper proposes a full-bridge (FB) T-type isolated dc/dc converter for the applications with high input voltage and wide input voltage range. The proposed converter is composed of four main power switches with high voltage stress (SiC mosfet) and four auxiliary power switches with low voltage stress (Si mosfet). Comparing with the conventional diode clamped FB three-level isolated dc/dc converters, the proposed FB T-type converter has simpler circuit structure and higher efficiency. A corresponding control strategy including two working patterns is proposed, which can not only realize the zero-voltage switching for the main and auxiliary power switches but also satisfy the wide input voltage range. More importantly, the proposed corresponding control strategy has the ability of balancing the currents among the power switches, which would balance the power losses, thermal stresses among the power switches, and thus improve the reliability of the converter. In this paper, a novel buck–boost dc–dc converter with continuous input current is proposed. The voltage gain of the presented converter is higher than conventional converters, such as buck–boost, single-ended primary-inductance converter, Cuk, and Zeta converters. This converter works only by one switch and voltage stress across the switch is low. Input current of the proposed converter is continuous so a large filter at the input is not needed. Furthermore, continuous input current has made this converter suitable for renewable energy and fuel cell applications. In this converter, noninverting output voltage is obtained and high gain of voltage is achieved as well. So it can operate at wide output voltage range only by changing the duty cycle of the power switch pulse. This paper proposes a voltage balancing method for a flying capacitor multilevel converter based on the phase-disposition sinusoidal pulsewidth modulation (PD-SPWM). This voltage balancing method uses redundant switching states, which are determined by the minimization of a cost function. The implementation of the PD-SPWM using standard triangular carriers leads to additional switching events that are due to the transitions within the same voltage level, thus increasing the switching frequency of the power devices. Such drawback can be avoided by using sawtooth carrier waveforms. Another characteristic of the proposed voltage balancing method is that it does not require the tuning of parameters to achieve optimal performance. In this paper, a predictive control scheme is proposed for the low-voltage ride-through (LVRT) enhancement of direct-driven permanent-magnet-synchronous-generator-based megawatt-level wind turbines. The proposed method uses the turbine–generator rotor inertia to store the surplus energy during the grid voltage dips. The power conversion system is realized using a three-phase diode-bridge rectifier, a three-level-boost converter, and a neutral-point-clamped (NPC) inverter. The wind turbine requirements, such as maximum power point tracking, net dc-bus voltage control, balancing of the dc capacitor voltages, and reactive power generation, are modeled as the reference control variables. The generator- and grid-side cost functions are defined to deal with these control objectives. During each sampling interval, the control goals are achieved based on the minimization of cost functions. The coordination of boost and NPC converters and the exchange of reference control variables during normal and LVRT operation are formulated such that the power converters operate in a safe mode while meeting the grid code requirements. The objective of this paper is to propose a new inverter topology for a multilevel voltage output. This topology is designed based on a switched capacitor (SC) technique, and the number of output levels is determined by the number of SC cells. Only one dc voltage source is needed, and the problem of capacitor voltage balancing is avoided as well. This structure is not only very simple and easy to be extended to a higher level, but also its gate driver circuits are simplified because the number of active switches is reduced. The operational principle of this inverter and the targeted modulation strategies are presented, and power losses are investigated. In this paper, a new voltage source converter for medium voltage applications is presented which can operate over a wide range of voltages (2.4-7.2 kV) without the need for connecting the power semiconductor in series. The operation of the proposed converter is studied and analyzed. In order to control the proposed converter, a space-vector modulation (SVM) strategy with redundant switching states has been proposed. SVM usually has redundant switching state anyways. What is the main point we are trying to get to? These redundant switching states help to control the output voltage and balance voltages of the flying capacitors in the proposed converter. This paper describes the design and implementation of a three-phase resonant converter with low ripple and high control accuracy. Based on a three-phase LCC-type resonant converter—which has advantages of low ripple, high-efficiency, and high-power density compared with a single-phase converter—a high-voltage power supply with low ripple (<0.1%) was designed. In addition to the general merits of an LCC-type resonant converter operating at continuous conduction mode—including soft switching, low conduction loss, and current source characteristics—the proposed scheme uses only one phase under a light-load condition by having different leg designs of the gate drive circuit and snubber parameters. This allows the design to overcome the operational constraints of the general LCC-type resonant converter. The distinctive design of the three-phase converter structure provides high efficiency and low ripple not only during rated operation, but also under light-load conditions. In order to analyze the high performance of the proposed scheme from no load to rated load, a PSPICE simulation was carried out. Comparison results with a conventional LCC-type resonant converter based on a single-phase structure are analyzed from the viewpoints of output ripple, losses, and operable load range. Using the proposed converter, a 20-kV, 20-kW high-voltage dc power supply design and implementation was presented with a superior gate drive circuit. Finally, the superiority of the proposed converter was verified through a simulation and experimental results. It was experimentally confirmed that the developed power supply achieves high performance in terms of efficiency (98%), operable load range (0.5–20 kV), and low ripple (0.05%), with a high power density. In this paper, novel topologies for symmetric, asymmetric, and cascade switched-diode multilevel converter are proposed, which can produce many levels with minimum number of power electronic switches, gate driver circuits, power diodes, and dc voltage sources. The number of required power electronic switches against required voltage levels is a very important factor in designing of multilevel converter, because switches define the reliability, circuit size, cost, installation area, and control complexity. For asymmetric and cascade converter, new algorithms for determination of dc voltage sources values are presented. To produce maximum number of levels at the output voltage, the proposed cascade topology is optimized for different goals, such as the minimization of the number of power electronic switches, gate driver circuits, power diodes, dc voltage sources, and blocking voltage on switches. Comparison of the results of various multilevel converters will be investigated to reflect the merits of the presented topologies. A new automated permuting capacitor device (APCD) for calibration of inductive voltage dividers (IVDs) with four-terminal-pair definition was designed and tested. The permuting capacitors composed of 11-SMD capacitors were housed in a bulk metal in a symmetrical arrangement. Thus, the APCD is compact and the temperature of the APCD could be controlled within several mKs. Using coaxial microwave switches, the APCD was permuted quickly and automatically using electrical signals during the calibration process. This prevented the APCD from being thermally perturbed by manual operation. Owing to the improved stability of the device, the effects of stray capacitance and voltage coefficient of the APCD were evaluated accurately. The calibration of an IVD using the permuting capacitor method with this APCD in the frequency range 1–2 kHz with accuracy comparable with that of the straddling method is presented in this paper. In this paper, a novel transformer-less adjustable voltage quadrupler dc-dc converter with high-voltage transfer gain and reduced semiconductor voltage stress is proposed. The proposed topology utilizes input-parallel output-series configuration for providing a much higher voltage gain without adopting an extreme large duty cycle. The proposed converter cannot only achieve high step-up voltage gain with reduced component count but also reduce the voltage stress of both active switches and diodes. This will allow one to choose lower voltage rating MOSFETs and diodes to reduce both switching and conduction losses. In addition, due to the charge balance of the blocking capacitor, the converter features automatic uniform current sharing characteristic of the two interleaved phases for voltage boosting mode without adding extra circuitry or complex control methods. Multilevel flying capacitor (FC) converters provide natural capacitor voltage balance under phase-shifted pulse width modulation (PS-PWM). However, natural balancing may not be robust enough to maintain the voltages at the reference values, especially under certain transient conditions. Furthermore, natural balancing dynamics depend on the load and it may be very slow in some practical applications. Therefore, a more robust balancing mechanism of maintaining the FC voltages at the desired values is required. This paper proposes a new closed-loop voltage-balancing method for the multilevel FC converters using PS-PWM. The proposed method balances the voltages of the FCs by modifying the duty cycle of each switch of the FC converter using a proportional controller. The crossed effect between FC currents and duty cycles is considered and is used for optimal FC voltage balancing. Simulation and experimental results verify that the proposed voltage-balancing method is very robust to different operating conditions, such as load transients, linear/nonlinear and unbalanced loads. The acceptability of pulsed electric field (PEF) processing as an alternative method for liquid food preservation requires the elimination, or at least the reduction, of all the effects accompanying the flow of electric current. Metallic particles might be released from the electrode material as a result of electrically driven electrochemical reactions. The presence of such metallic particles can affect the quality and the safety of PEF-processed food. This paper investigates the effect of varying the parameters of applied electric pulses on the amount of released metals, aiming to reach the optimum conditions. The neutral-point potential fluctuation in single-phase three-level rectifiers leads to coupling between the line current regulation and dc-link capacitor voltage balancing, deteriorating waveform quality of the line current. For addressing this issue, this paper proposes a low-complexity model predictive current control (MPCC) with constant switching frequency, which achieves a decoupling control of the line current and the neutral-point potential under the unbalanced load condition. The switching frequency is fixed by combining the MPCC scheme with predefined switching sequences. The boundary of the durations for voltage vectors in switching sequences is presented to balance the capacitor voltage without worsening the line current quality. The optimal switching sequence and the corresponding optimal durations of voltage vectors in the switching sequence are readily derived without the assessment of the cost function, which dramatically simplifies the complexity of the MPCC scheme. In this paper, a modular control approach has been proposed for a single- and three-phase differential-mode Ćuk inverter (DMCI) operating with a recently proposed discontinuous-modulation scheme that offers tangible performance benefits over conventional continuous modulation scheme. The modular control scheme uses a combination of a transformation and adaptive control law to meet tracking requirements in the presence of converter nonlinearity. Experimental results for the single- and three-phase DMCI are provided for startup, steady state, load transition, and total harmonic distortion using different types of loads, which validate the efficacy of the implemented modular tracking controller. Owing to low cost, small size, and low weight, transformerless inverters became prominent in single-phase grid connected photovoltaic (PV) systems. Key issues pertaining to these inverters include suppression of common mode (CM) leakage current and improvement of conversion efficiency. Achieving higher efficiency in single-phase grid-connected photovoltaic systems depends on the number of stages involved in feeding power to the grid, predominantly, if the PV array voltage is less than the peak value of the grid voltage. In this paper, an integrated dc–dc converter based grid-connected transformerless PV inverter is proposed which is aimed at maintaining high efficiency, even if the PV array voltage falls below the peak value of grid voltage (efficient operation at an extended input voltage range). A modulation strategy is discussed in order to minimize the flow of CM leakage current. Further, the efficiencies of certain transformerless inverter topologies are analyzed and compared with that of the proposed topology. Detailed simulation studies are carried out in MATLAB/Simulink environment to verify the analysis. In this paper, a fifth-order boost point-of-load converter is developed by cascading a modified fourth-order boost converter with a combination of L–C and diode. This topology has the following salient features: Single-switch topology, common ground between source and load, low-voltage stress across intermediate capacitors, and voltage gain same as other reported fifth-order boost converters with no common ground. Steady-state and dynamic analyses demonstrate the proposed converter's boosting feature and dynamic performance, respectively. A contoured robust Bode plot methodology is employed to design the robust voltage-mode controller to ensure load voltage regulation in the presence of uncertainties. The necessary and sufficient conditions under which the designed controller guarantees the load voltage regulation and robust stability are obtained. A step-by-step robust controller design procedure is outlined. The salient features of the proposed converter and its robust performance are studied analytically, using the MATLAB platform, and validated experimentally on a 60-W prototype module. This paper presents a dual output power factor correction (PFC) converter for switched reluctance motor (SRM) drives. Here, a modified single-ended primary inductance converter (SEPIC) is proposed for a wide range of speed control and to achieve PFC at ac mains. The switching frequency of the converter is considered to be 20 kHz. The converter is designed to operate in the discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) of operation, which reduces the size of the output inductor. The DCM mode to obtain PFC also reduces the sensor requirement as compared to the continuous conduction mode (CCM), where two voltage sensors and one current sensor add to the drive cost. The drive is proposed for universal ac mains (90–270 V ac). Simulated and experimental results are demonstrated to validate the performance of the drive during different operating conditions. This paper investigates an ac–dc–ac multilevel power converter. The studied configuration is composed of two single-phase ac–dc–ac three-leg modules and series-connected H-bridges in the shared part of system. Because the proposed converter has shared legs between the input and output, it is employed in applications with same input and output frequency. Uninterrupted power supply and unified power quality conditioner are application examples for this converter. Such multilevel topology has lower dc-link voltage rating, which, consequently, presents low switch blocking voltages when compared to conventional topologies. System model, a space-vector pulsewidth modulation (PWM) strategy to symmetrical and asymmetrical dc-link voltages, and an overall control strategy to adjust the system variables are presented. A power flux analysis shows the operation zone in which the individual dc-link voltage balancing is possible. PWM and control strategies are developed to reduce the semiconductor total losses, harmonic distortion, and switching stress. Two ac–dc–ac multilevel conventional structures are used for comparison. In this paper, a new single-stage half-bridge (HB) resonant $LLC$ converter additionally employing one resonant capacitor and two relays with one package is proposed, compared with a single-stage HB $LLC$ converter. Moreover, a center-tapped transformer is replaced with a coupled transformer. Since the proposed converter changes the turns ratio of the coupled transformer using a relay according to low- or high-input-voltage range, it can decrease the range of its needed voltage gain. It means that the proposed converter can be designed with large transformer magnetizing inductance compared with the conventional single-stage HB $LLC$ converter. As a result, the primary conduction and turn-off losses are reduced. Moreover, in low input voltage range, it has smaller total primary wire resistance of the transformer due to parallel connection of the coupled transformer, which decreases its conduction loss. In addition, additionally employed small-sized components can be inserted to the conventional system. To confirm the operation, features, and validity of the proposed converter, universal input with low line and high line and 16.5 V/60 W output laboratory prototype targeting laptop adapters with wide-input-voltage range is built and tested. This paper proposes a circuit structure that can improve the power-conversion efficiency \eta e of an AC–DC boost converter. The circuit uses a 1:1 transformer and a voltage boost circuit composed of an inductor, a capacitor, and a diode. The transformer forces the converter to operate in continuous conduction mode for input current, and thereby reduces input ripple. The voltage boost circuit enables the switch to operate in critical conduction mode, so the power loss due to turn-on of switch and reverse recovery of diode is minimized. The proposed converter has high \eta e over a wide range of AC input voltage $V_{{\rm{ac}}}:\,\eta _{e}= 92.9\% $ at $V_{{\rm{ac}}}= {\text{85}}\,{\text{V}} and \eta e= 97.4\% at V{\rm{ac}}= {\text{265}}\,{\text{V}}, when the converter was operated at DC output voltage of 400 V and output power of 500 W. The temperature of the switch stabilized at ∼84 °C for $V_{{\rm{ac}}}= {\text{85}}\,{\text{V}}$ , at ∼70 °C for $V_{{\rm{ac}}}= {\text{110}}\,{\text{V}}$, and at ∼42 °C for $V_{{\rm{ac}}}= {\text{220}}\,{\text{V}}$, whereas that in other AC–DC converters either failed or stabilized at much higher levels. In this paper, a novel platform for the single phase switched-capacitor multilevel inverters (SCMLIs) is presented. It has several advantages over the classical topologies, such as an appropriate boosting property, higher efficiency, lower number of required dc voltage sources, and other accompanying components with less complexity and lower cost. The basic structure of the proposed converter is capable of making nine-level of the output voltage under different kinds of loading conditions. Hereby, by using the same two capacitors paralleled to a single dc source, a switched-capacitor (SC) cell is made that contributes to boosting the value of the input voltage. In this case, the balanced voltage of the capacitors can be precisely provided on the basis of the series–parallel technique and the redundant switching states. Afterward, to reach the higher number of output voltage levels, two suggested SC cells are connected to each other with a new extended configuration. Therefore, by the use of a reasonable number of required power electronic devices, and also by utilizing only two isolated dc voltage sources, which their magnitudes can be designed based on either symmetric or asymmetric types, a 17- and 49-level of the output voltage are obtained. Based on the proposed extended configuration, a new generalized version of SCMLIs is also derived. Generally, single-stage buck–boost inverters consist of distinct circuits operating individually in buck/boost or positive/negative modes, the latter definitely leading to crossover distortion in the output current. This paper proposes a switching strategy that changes the bimodal operation of a single-stage buck–boost topology to a single-mode inverter. This is due to the consequent voltage gain that ensures that the output voltage polarity, apart from its magnitude, is an exclusive function of the duty ratio. Operational principle and salient hardware design are explained with the help of equivalent circuits. Details about the dynamic model are presented, based on which controller design is carried out for both stand-alone and grid-connected operation.
