This paper proposes a three-phase four-leg drive for dc-biased sinusoidal current vernier reluctance machine (DC-VRM). By adding an asymmetrical neutral leg to the conventional three-phase inverter, the dc field excitation current can be generated. Compared to the open-winding inverter (conventional drive topology), the three-phase four-leg inverter greatly reduces the number of power devices, and the asymmetrical neutral leg does not have short-circuit straight-through risk. The topology ensures that the stator current can flow in both directions and maximum torque per copper loss can be obtained in DC-VRM. Equivalent carrier-based pulsewidth modulation (PWM) strategy is proposed to produce the dc-biased sinusoidal current and maximize the dc bus utilization. The proposed carrier-based PWM has several different equivalent methods. Compared to the conventional DC-VRM drive, the power loss of the proposed drive with equivalent space vector PWM (SVPWM) can be reduced significantly and can be further reduced by discontinuous PWM minimum (DPWMMIN) in the rated condition. This paper discusses the implementation of level-shifted and phase-shifted carrier-based modulation methods, in conjunction with a multiphase open-end winding drive topology. The considered drive is supplied using two five-phase two-level voltage source inverters (VSIs), with input provided from two isolated supplies of equal dc voltages. The topology is known to yield the same space-vector pattern as a corresponding three-level inverter in single-sided supply mode. It is shown in this paper that, with the application of a simple logic, the same phase voltage waveforms result as those obtainable with the appropriate carrier-based modulation scheme applied to the three-level VSI in single-sided supply mode. While the outcomes of the modulation techniques are the same, the open-end winding topology offers certain advantages, such as modularity and absence of capacitor voltage balancing requirements. The analysis is conducted for selected modulation methods using voltage and current waveforms, spectra Fast Fourier Transform (FFT), and total harmonic distortion as figures of merit. Multiphase (more than three phases) power electronic converters are required mainly for feeding variable-speed multiphase drive systems. This paper presents one such solution by using a direct ac–ac converter that can be used to supply a nine-phase drive system. The input is a fixed-voltage and fixedfrequency three-phase input, and the output is a variable-voltage and variable-frequency nine-phase output. A simple pulsewidthmodulation technique is developed for the proposed ac–ac converter named as a nonsquare three-to-nine-phase matrixconverter configuration. The developed modulation technique is based on the comparison of a high-frequency carrier signal with the duty ratios. Although the carrier-based scheme is widely employed for the control of back-to-back converters, it has recently been used for controlling a three-to-three-phase matrix converter. This concept is extended in this paper for controlling a threeto-nine-phase matrix converter. With the two techniques that are proposed, one outputs 0.75 of the input magnitude and the other outputs reach 0.762 of the input. This is the maximum value of the output voltage in the linear modulation range that can be achieved in this configuration of the matrix converter. This paper proposes a generalized design framework for three-phase Vienna rectifiers to handle the neutral point voltage balance issue. On the basis of the design framework, it is convenient to construct various neutral point voltage balancing methods with the guarantee of stability. As demonstration, three representative neutral point voltage balance approaches are presented by choosing different zero-sequence voltages. A comprehensive comparison among the three approaches is given in the aspects of input current quality, capacitor voltage fluctuation, and system efficiency. The comparison results provide guidance for constructing the most appropriate approach based on the specific requirement. The advancement in power electronics has made the use of any number of phases in ac machines possible since with the inverter, any number of phase voltages can be realized as long as the corresponding inverter exists. To supply multiphase drives requires multiphase voltage source inverters (VSIs) whose output voltages depend very much on the methods of generating the pulses to turn on and turn off the inverter devices appropriately. This paper presents an analytical technique for the determination of the expressions for the modulation signals used in the carrier-based sinusoidal and generalized discontinuous pulse width modulation schemes for two-level, five-phase voltage source converters. These expressions can be used for both balanced and unbalanced phase voltages generated by any two-level multiphase inverter, in generating the required reference signals appropriately. An example of a five-phase VSI is presented to illustrate the strategy. Three-level rectifiers with reduced number of switches (such as the Vienna Rectifier) to improve the input power quality of rectifier systems have been receiving wide interest in the past years. In this paper, a new carrier-based pulsewidth-modulation control algorithm is proposed for such converters to eliminate the low-frequency harmonics in the line current while achieving unity power factor at the rectifier input terminals. The operating constraints of the Vienna Rectifier with the carrier-based modulation strategy are examined carefully, and the proposed control algorithm ensures that appropriate voltage/current directional constraints are met. A promising cost-reduction opportunity can be seen with the elimination of input current sensing to operate the Vienna Rectifier. This paper presents a carrier-based modulation method for a matrix converter. By using the offset voltage and changing the slope of carrier, it is possible to synthesize the sinusoidal input currents with the unity power factor and desired output voltages. The proposed method is equivalent to the so called space vector pulsewidth modulation method. The proposed method uses a new point of view to understand the matrix converter modulation method such as the voltage source inverter (VSI) modulation method. Using the proposed method, this paper presents the two-phase/three-phase modulation method and dynamic/steady-state over-modulation method for the matrix converter. These methods are well developed in the study of a VSI. By the proposed steady-state overmodulation method, it is possible to synthesize the fundamental component of output voltage to be equal to that of input voltage at the cost of some distortion of input current. The feasibility of the proposed modulation method has been verified by a computer simulation and experimental results. These results show that the proposed carrier-based modulation method can be implemented easily without any tables. In this paper, the analysis of space vector modulation of a three-phase/wire/level Vienna rectifier is conducted, according to which the implementation of the equivalent carrier-based pulsewidth modulation is deduced theoretically within each separated sector in the diagram of vectors. The voltage balancing ability of dc-link neutral point, which depends on the uneven distribution of short vectors, is analyzed as well. An adaptive and robust controller to balance the output voltage under the unbalanced load limit for different modulation indices is proposed. The proposed controller can work at wide range of unbalanced load condition as well. Furthermore, the maximum unbalanced load is deduced versus the modulation index m when the converter works in unity power factor. An experimental prototype of 2.5 kW was built to verify the effectiveness of the theoretical analysis. Finally, the tested unbalanced limit of outputs for the experimental platform was given under different modulation indices. This paper presents a novel modulation strategy for a seven-phase three-level inverter, aimed at variable-speed drive applications. Developed space vector pulsewidth modulation (SVPWM) strategy is based on vector space decomposition (VSD) approach and an analysis of multidimensional space vector projections in mutually orthogonal planes. The algorithm represents an extension of a recently developed five-phase three-level SVPWM algorithm and is considerably more complex, due to the existence of three mutually orthogonal planes in a seven-phase system. The difficulties of generalization of space vector strategies, which stem from the nature of the multiphase systems, are highlighted. Increasing the number of phases from five to seven increases the number of switching states from 3 ^5 = 243 to 3^7 = 2187 and the number of orthogonal planes from two to three. This considerably affects the complexity of the offline calculations. However, the final implementation of the algorithm is simple. Developed SVPWM algorithm is compared to an equivalent carrier-based strategy and it is shown that they yield identical performance. The complexity of the algorithms for real-time implementation is compared. Simulation and experimental results, obtained using neutral-point clamped inverter, verify the theoretical developments. This paper presents a new average d-q model and a control approach with a carrier-based pulsewidth modulation (PWM) implementation for nonregenerative three-phase threelevel boost (VIENNA-type) rectifiers. State-space analysis and an averaging technique are used to derive the relationship between the controlled duty cycle and the dc-link neutral-point voltage, based on which an optimal zero-sequence component is found for dc-link voltage balance. By utilizing this zero-sequence component, the behavior of the dc-link voltage unbalance can be modeled in d-q coordinates using averaging over a switching cycle. Therefore, the proposed model is valid for up to half of the switching frequency. With the proposed model, a new control algorithm is developed with carrier-based PWM implementation, which features great simplicity and good dc-link neutral-point regulation. Space vector representation is also utilized to analyze the voltage balancing mechanism and the region of feasible operation. A significant problem with neutral-point-clamped three-level inverters is the fluctuation in the neutral-point voltage. In this paper, a capacitor voltage balancing technique for carrier-based three-level pulsewidth modulation (PWM) is developed, with improved voltage control capability at high modulation index. The method incorporates a novel scheme that requires measurements of only the motor currents and capacitor voltages to implement voltage balancing control, and does not need to determine the direction of power flow between the inverter and the motor. Five-phase induction machines are attractive due to inherent benefits such as lower current rating than three-phase ones. On the other hand, ac motor drives often need to operate in the overmodulation (OVM) region, e.g., to increase the maximum speed or to work with reduced dc-link voltage. Most of the existing OVM strategies for five-phase drives are based on injecting low-order harmonics in the no-torque xy plane while avoiding low-order α−β harmonics (at least up to a modulation index of 1.2311 p.u.), so as to prevent the torque ripple associated with the α−β components. However, in practice the x−y impedance is very small, and hence, this approach can easily lead to overcurrent. This article proposes an OVM method for five-phase induction motors that adaptively modifies the injected components so that at each moment the addition of low-order x−y harmonics is favored over α−β ones but without surpassing the maximum current rms of the drive. In case the total stator copper loss (SCL) tends to exceed its rating during OVM in a given scenario, the proposed scheme automatically reduces the x−y injection to keep the SCL at its rated value. Square voltage waveforms enable high dc-link utilization (DLU) in multiphase ac drives. Circulating-current filters were devised to attenuate the harmonics in no-torque low-impedance subspaces. Nonetheless, the square-wave harmonics that generate torque ripple are not reduced. Recently, it was proposed to combine circulating-current filters with a carrier-based pulsewidth modulation (PWM) method, which injects harmonics in no-torque subspaces (attenuated by the filter) of five-phase motors to achieve high DLU, without harmonics associated with torque ripple. The filter allows prolonged high-DLU operation without overheating. Compared with other PWM techniques capable of high-DLU operation (overmodulation), the one proposed for said filters is especially convenient because of its simplicity. However, it is unclear if this PWM method can be extended to machines of any phase number n and winding arrangement (symmetrical or asymmetrical); and if so, the resulting performance is also unknown. This article extends this simple carrier-based PWM strategy to n-phase drives, and evaluates its behavior in terms of DLU, distortion, and computational burden. Symmetrical and asymmetrical winding arrangements are considered. The improvement in DLU, compared with conventional PWM with zero-sequence injection, is considerable.
