Emulation of an electric machine allows the testing of a drive inverter and controller of an electric drive system, prior to the manufacture of a machine prototype. This paper presents the emulation of a variable flux machine (VFM). The VFM emulator system proposed in this paper uses a detailed look-up table-based machine model for the purpose of emulation. This allows the emulator to mimic all machine magnetic and geometric behaviors such as saturation and torque ripple. In addition, the machine emulator proposed in this paper uses high-performance high-bandwidth linear amplifiers as power amplifiers. This enables a high bandwidth; leading to a high accuracy machine emulation. A detailed control description for the proposed machine emulator system and a machine model look-up table data verification against a prototype machine is initially presented. Experimental results are then presented to validate the utility of the proposed VFM emulator system to emulate various machine transient behaviors at different magnetization levels. Experimental results obtained from the emulator are subsequently compared against the experimental results obtained from a prototype VFM drive to verify the emulation accuracy. As the inverter-based generation replaces the conventional synchronous generators, it may also need to fill in the missing ancillary service support. One of these ancillary services is dynamic reactive power provision and voltage control. This paper analyzes optimal strategy of reactive and active fault-current support of the inverter-based generation leading to fast voltage recovery of the system. For the purpose of the analysis, new ramping active current controller able to emulate different behavior of active current injection is proposed. By optimizing its parameters for different case studies of the system, the conclusions about optimal behavior of the inverter based generation with respect to system parameters and operating conditions are drawn. It is observed that the optimal combination of active and reactive fault-current is the most sensitive to the dynamic load component penetration levels in the system. With the increasing penetration levels, the significance of active fault-current injection increases. The results show that with higher penetration levels of dynamic load component in the heavy load areas, the ramping down of the inverter-based generation active fault-current results in slower voltage recovery of the system. The performances of a model predictive control algorithm largely depend on the knowledge of the system model. A model-free predictive control approach skips all the effects of parameters variations or mismatches, as well as of model nonlinearity and uncertainties. A finite-set model-free current predictive control is proposed in this paper. The current variations predictions induced by the eight base inverter voltage vectors are estimated by means of the previous measurements stored into lookup tables. To keep the current variations information up to date, the three current measurements due to the three most recent feeding voltages are combined together to reconstruct all the others. The reconstruction is performed by taking advantage of the relationships between the three different base voltage vectors involved in the process. In particular, 210 possible combinations of three-state voltage vectors can be found, but they can be gathered together in six different groups. A light and computationally fast algorithm for the group identification is proposed in this paper. Finally, the current reconstruction for the prediction of future steps is thoroughly analyzed. A compensation of the motor rotation effect on the input voltages is proposed, too. This paper proposes an evolutionary algorithm-based energy-saving control strategy to control a highly nonlinear and time-varying active magnetic bearing (AMB) positioning system that considers energy efficiency and control performance simultaneously. Most AMB control schemes use a bias current with a superimposed control current to improve the linearity and dynamic performance of the system. However, the bias current causes power losses even if no electromagnetic force is required. As such, a recurrent wavelet fuzzy neural network with adaptive differential evolution (RWFNN-ADE)-based dynamic bias current control strategy is proposed in this paper so as to minimize the energy consumed by an AMB without altering its positioning performance and robustness. To begin with, this paper analyzes the operation principle of the AMB positioning system with a differential driving mode. Subsequently, the proposed RWFNN-ADE control scheme, in which the control current and bias current are controlled by the RWFNN and ADE, respectively, is introduced in detail. Finally, the experimental results demonstrate the high-accuracy control and significant energy-saving performances of the proposed RWFNN-ADE-controlled AMB positioning system. In the tests corresponding to operation periods of 10 and 50 s, the energy improvements compared to the baseline values were 20.24% and 17.65%, respectively, in nominal cases, and 18.89% and 18.68%, respectively, in parameter variation cases, for the proposed control strategy. In this paper, the damping ability of point of common coupling (PCC) voltage feedforward is analyzed in order to improve the stability of current control, in which interference with an LCL filter of a battery energy storage system (BESS) and synchronous inductance of a diesel generator is considered in a stand-alone microgrid. A BESS can be charged by a diesel generator when the state of charge of the battery bank is significantly insufficient and where the BESS operates with constant current constant voltage control and the diesel generator provides constant voltage constant frequency control. In this case, large synchronous when the diesel generator is in a steady state may severely cause the instability of current control. The stability analysis should be required to guarantee the paralleled operation between BESS and diesel generator. An equivalent circuit model of the diesel generator is needed to perform these processes. To bring availability of analysis, this paper considers a simple equivalent circuit model considering synchronous inductance in the steady state, and it has very large inductance corresponding 1 per unit. The resonance issue is attenuated by the damping ability of PCC voltage feedforward where it is possible to improve the stability by appropriately adjusting the gain of the voltage feedforward. The effects of the synchronous inductance and the feedforward loop are analyzed in the s-domain and z-domain. The gain of the voltage feedforward is determined to be 0.2 and 0.4 based on stability analysis. To verify the validity of the damping effect of PCC voltage feedforward, a demonstration site is constructed and the stability is verified through simulation and experiment with a full model, and total harmonic distortion of current is improved to 2.44%. To improve the torque accuracy for open-end winding permanent magnet synchronous motor (OEW-PMSM) with common dc bus, it is necessary to eliminate the zero-sequence torque (ZST) caused by zero-sequence current (ZSC) and the third back electromotive force. But the third flux linkage mismatch can enlarge ZSC which causes torque ripple. To deal with the above problem, firstly, a q-axis current injection method combined with deadbeat predictive current control (DPCC) is adopted to inject an extra current into the reference q-axis current. The extra torque generated by this injected current can compensate for ZST. Secondly, to ensure the accuracy of the q-axis injected current, a parameter identification method based on recursive least square (RLS) algorithm with forgetting factor is presented to identify the third flux linkage accurately. The identification value can reduce ZSC and torque ripple under different working conditions. And the accurate q-axis injected current can be obtained to counteract ZST and output accurate torque. Finally, three methods are comparatively analyzed in this paper, namely the traditional DPCC method, the DPCC method with q-axis current injection and the proposed DPCC method based on RLS with forgetting factor. In an open-end winding permanent magnet synchronous machines drive with single dc voltage source, zero-sequence current (ZSC) can lead to a high current stress of power modules and loss of motor. Therefore, some modulation strategies have been employed to alleviate ZSC by suppressing zero-sequence voltage (ZSV). However, ZSC still exists in the system because ZSV can also be generated by other nonlinear factors of inverter such as the dead time of system. In addition, zero-sequence back electromotive force in the zero-sequence path can also enlarge torque ripple and ZSC. In order to deal with above problems, first, this paper proposes a full-order adaptive zero-sequence observer to estimate future ZSC and ZSV, which are able to compensate one-step control delay. Second, to achieve the maximum voltage dc bus utilization, this paper proposes a novel deadbeat predictive current control (DPCC) scheme with alternate sub-hexagonal center pulsewidth modulation strategy to suppress ZSC and torque ripple simultaneously. Finally, this paper presents a comparative study of two types of methods, namely traditional DPCC scheme and the proposed DPCC scheme. This paper presents a simple pulse width modulation algorithm for control of an ultracapacitor based energy storage system used for source and load support applications. As opposed to dual loop control philosophy that is widely used for backup applications, this paper presents a simple single loop current control that is only useful for controlling the ultracapacitor based DC/DC converters used in source and load support applications. The proposed PWM blocking method necessitates the DC/DC converter to operate in five states and takes into consideration the essential operational limits associated with the ultracapacitors. The performance of the proposed algorithm is verified experimentally using a 24 V laboratory prototype setup. Although Switched Reluctnace Motors have many advantages, vibration is known as their most severe drawback acting as an impediment limiting their widespread use in industrial and domestic applications. Through electromechanical relationships, it is shown that the first-order time derivative of applied phase voltage and second-order time derivative of radial force directly affect the amplitude of generated vibration, especially at the beginning of demagnetization instance. Therefore, a set of criteria is stated in this paper meeting which ensures having low vibration intensity. In this paper, three types of demagnetization voltages are proposed which comprehensively meet the stated criteria. These voltages share the same characteristics contributing to the vibration reduction in Switched Reluctance Motor. Two vital parameters of Synchronous Counter and Coefficient are included in the proposed demagnetization voltages which must be meticulously chosen in order to be effective. Noticeable contribution of the proposed methods to the vibration alleviation is validated through simulation and experimental tests conducted under different working conditions. This paper investigates the effects of the dynamic properties of a photovoltaic generator (PVG) on the stability of a grid-connected current-source inverter (CSI)-based photovoltaic system and presents a simple yet effective active compensator to ensure system stability. A detailed equivalent model of the PVG that considers the dynamic resistance, diffusion capacitance, series inductance, and dc cable resistance and inductance is used, and the effects of these parameters are assessed. It has been found that when the PVG operates in the constant-current region (CCR), the phase margin becomes negative in the control-to-input dynamics, which alters the stability of the dc-link current control. The change in the system dynamics when the operating point of the PVG shifts from the constant-voltage region (CVR) to CCR is verified through a detailed small-signal state-space model of the complete system. Furthermore, an active compensator is proposed to ensure stable dc-link current control operation at all operating points of the PVG. The influence of different control parameters on the integrated system dynamics is examined to determine the range of the control parameters required for stable operation. The performance of the proposed system under utility-grid fault, grid voltage parameter variation, weak grid, and changes in insolation level is also evaluated. Detailed nonlinear time-domain simulation results, using a typical utility-scale CSI-based PV system, validate the analytical results and the effectiveness of the proposed active stabilization under different operating conditions. In this paper, consideration from the viewpoint of the dq-axis current vector locus is reported on the clues for improving the output of wound-field motor utilizing space harmonic for field excitation. It is experimentally verified by visualizing the vector locus on the dq coordinates. First, voltage equation will be explained, and then the offline parameter estimation will be discussed. The paper addresses an improved inner current reference calculation to be employed in the control of modular multilevel converters operating during either balanced or unbalanced conditions. The suggested reference calculation is derived based on the AC and DC additive and differential voltage components applied to the upper and lower arms of the converter. In addition, the impacts caused not only by the AC network’s impedances but also by the MMC’s arm impedances are also considered during the derivation of the AC additive current reference expressions. Another issue discussed in this article regards that singular voltage conditions, where the positive-sequence component is equal to the negative one, may occur not only in the AC network but also internally (within the converter’s applied voltages). Several different inner current reference calculation methods are compared and their applicability during the former fault conditions is analyzed. The ever growing penetration of distributed generation (DG) in a distribution network has a profound impact on network protection and stability. Traditional protection schemes and algorithms need to be extensively investigated as more and more DGs get introduced into the network. The current version of IEEE Standard 1547 does not present a comprehensive solution for fault current detection in the presence of various kinds of DGs. Power electronic inverter-based DGs (IBDGs) are of special concern in distribution network protection as they are often incapable of providing sufficient fault current and their controllers play a principal role in the DG behavior. In this paper, the effects of voltage and current controllers for IBDGs on industrial and commercial power system protection schemes are investigated. It is shown that the inverter control mode has a direct impact on its fault current levels and duration. A simplified distribution network model with IBDG operating under voltage and current control modes was tested to verify the effects of these controllers. Symmetrical ac-side current control is widely used for grid-connected modular multilevel converters (MMCs) under grid fault conditions. However, it is revealed that this control method can lead to unbalanced arm currents and consequently asymmetrical electrical stresses and nonuniform temperature distributions. This paper aims to analyze the mechanism of the unbalanced arm currents and propose an effective method to solve this problem. First, the electrical quantities inside MMCs are analyzed under unbalanced grid fault conditions. The analytical expressions of the unbalanced arm currents are derived considering different fault severities and operating conditions to reveal the “side-effects” of the symmetrical ac-side current control. After that, a zero-sequence ac voltage injection method is proposed. The injected voltage is directly derived from negative-sequence ac current controller and ac-side current with pure mathematical manipulations, which can be easily obtained without extra controllers. The effect of the injected voltage on the original modulation index is very limited according to an accurate quantitative analyzation. Moreover, the proposed method does not affect the already achieved symmetrical ac-side current control and the circulating current suppression. Modular multilevel converters (MMCs) can be configured to perform ac/ac conversion, which makes them suitable as railway power supplies. In this paper, a hierarchical control scheme for ac/ac MMCs for railway power supplies is devised and evaluated, considering the requirements and the operating conditions specific to this application. Furthermore, admittance models of the ac/ac MMC are developed, showing how the suggested hierarchical control scheme affects the three-phase and the single-phase side admittances of the converter. These models allow for analyzing the stability of the interconnected system using the impedance-based stability criterion and the passivity-based stability assessment. Active damping is a common way to stabilize the current control of LCL-filtered converters. In this paper, the stable region of −180° phase crossing is first identified within a predefined range of grid impedance and LCL parameter variations. Once the phase of the current control loop is in the identified region, a stabilization control can be attained. Subsequently, digital filters can be adopted to achieve active damping by reshaping the open-loop phase. Various digital filters are selected and benchmarked in this paper. It is confirmed that the all-pass filter has a unity gain and adjustable lagging phase before the Nyquist frequency, thereby being a promising solution to the phase reshaping. Therefore, the all-pass filter is employed to move the phase of the open-loop control (i.e., −180° phase crossing) into the targeted region for active damping. Notably, the current controller and the all-pass filter-based active damping can be separately designed, indicating the easy implementation of the active damping. Experimental tests demonstrate that the proposed method can ensure the system stability over a wide range of parameter variations (e.g., grid impedance changes and LCL-filter parameter drifts) while maintaining fast dynamics with the grid-side current control. Demanding higher power, higher power quality, lower switching loss, and eliminating interface transformers in industrial applications caused significant attention toward multilevel converters. This paper presents current control of a seven-level topology for medium-voltage high-power applications. This topology has fewer active switches and components, and less control complexity in comparison to the other existing classic and advanced seven-level topologies. A comprehensive review has been done on seven-level topologies to demonstrate the advantages of this topology in this paper. A control method based on model predictive control (MPC) is developed to balance the flying capacitors of this topology at their desired values and control the output currents without the need of pulsewidth modulation blocks, and proportional-integral (PI) controllers, which is the advantage of MPC in power electronics applications. In order to evaluate the performance of the seven-level topology and the developed control method effectiveness, experimental results are shown for different conditions, which demonstrate the feasibility of the seven-level topology and the developed control technique. In this paper, we design a voltage-modulated direct power control (VM-DPC) for a three-phase voltage source inverter (VSI) connected to a weak grid, where the phase-locked loop (PLL) system may make the system unstable if the conventional vector current control (VCC) method is applied. Compared with the conventional VCC method, the main advantage of the proposed VM-DPC method is that the PLL system is eliminated. Moreover, in order to inject the rated real power to the weak grid, the VSI system should generate some certain amount of reactive power as well. An eigenvalues-based analysis shows that the system with the proposed method tracks its desired dynamics in the certain operating range. This paper proposes a predictive speed and current control with multi-timescale optimization in a cascade architecture for a permanent-magnet synchronous motor. Considering the difference of timescale characteristics for speed loop and current loop, different sampling times are assigned to the respective subsystem. In the prediction step of the conventional two-timescale system, the coupling between slow and fast sampling models is ignored and the output of the slow-sampling model at asynchronous sampling period is missing, which both weaken the prediction performance of the system. In this paper, the predictions of both slow and fast models for all the prediction instants are analyzed in detail. Besides, a linear estimation method based on virtual instants is proposed to improve the performance of the slow-sampling model for fast prediction instants. The data stream of the proposed method is designed based on the cascaded structure. The strategies are implemented on a field-programmable gate arrays taking advantages of parallel and pipeline processing techniques. This paper proposes a d–q cross-coupling current controller for permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drives. Slotting and cross-coupling effects in PMSMs cause the effective air-gap length to vary with the rotor angle and distort the distribution of the air-gap flux. Such distortions have a significant influence on the current control by changing the relationship between the stator currents and voltages. To investigate their effects, a d–q model is established in this paper, which is suitable for describing the voltage characteristics of the actual PMSMs. The model contains the angle-dependent parameters, the cross-coupling inductance between d–q axes, and the q-axis permanent magnet flux linkage, unlike the ideal d–q model. The transfer function matrix from the d–q currents to d–q voltages of PMSM is newly derived from the model. Based on that, the current controller with the feedback and feedforward terms of 2-by-2 matrix is proposed. It is designed so that the independent gains are in low-pass filter forms and the coupling control gains are zero with eliminating interference between d–q axes. The proposed controller contributes to providing the stable control performance by canceling the slotting and cross-coupling effects. The next big change in various industry applications is associated with power dense motors, such as permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs). Utilization of multiphase PMSM can offer an additional fault-tolerant capability to their applications. Combining both advantages, this paper proposes a simple yet robust current control strategy for a five-phase PMSM under normal operation and in a case of a loss of one phase. Traditional linear current controllers successfully applied to reference tracking of a healthy motor may become less efficient during postfault operation due to additional unmodeled dynamics. This paper proposes a modified angular transformation to a special rotating frame in which the postfault permanent magnet flux linkage remains unchanged and the motor model remains decoupled. Following this, a nonlinear current control scheme based on sliding mode control is proposed, which successfully treats model inaccuracies and provides good dynamic performance and tracking accuracy. SiC mosfet based converters are capable of high switching frequency operation. In this paper, the converter is operated with 50-kHz switching frequency for an active front-end rectifier application. Due to high switching frequency, the grid-side filter size is reduced, and the possibility of a high bandwidth current control loop is utilized in this paper. A current control loop with bandwidth of 5 kHz is designed using a proportional–integral controller in synchronously rotating dq-reference frame. In addition, the performance of the controller is tested under unbalanced input supply conditions. During this condition, new feed-forward signals, which are added to the controller output, are proposed. The gain of the feed-forward signal can be modified to achieve balanced sinusoidal grid currents, constant dc-link voltage, or a controlled negative-sequence input current, which are typical application-depending requirements. A closed-form formula to calculate the gain of the feed-forward signal to achieve the above-mentioned requirements is also proposed in this paper. This paper provides a theoretical and experimental discussion on ac-inductors design for a modular multilevel triple-star bridge-cells (TSBC) converter, or shortly a TSBC converter. This converter requires multiple ac inductors for controlling nine cluster currents. This paper proposes three three-legged, six-winding, “interzigzag” inductors for the TSBC converter. Since each leg of the individual inductor has two windings, the three inductors have 18 windings in total. The wire leads are zigzagged among the three inductors. This unique structure of the “interzigzag” windings leads to the following feature: Both three-phase supply and motor currents produce no magnetic flux in each of the nine legs. This feature makes each inductor smaller in size and lighter in weight. A specially-designed downscaled motor-drive system rated at 400 V and 15 kW is constructed and tested to confirm the validity of a design of the proposed inductors, as well as to verify transient motor-drive performance during four-quadrant operation. In this paper, it is identified that unstable weak grid connection of voltage source inverters (VSIs) is dominantly caused by the current control. In particular, it is found the proportional gain $ k_p$ of conventional PI controller cannot balance the grid voltage impact and damping capability especially when a very weak grid with short circuit ratio (SCR) $ < $ 1.3 is connected. This issue is solved in this paper by simply restructuring the PI controller as an IP controller for current control. This paper proposes an improved SOC balancing strategy for the modular energy storage system (ESS) based on low bandwidth communication (LBC) technology, aiming at solving the drawbacks of the conventional balancing strategy based on droop control. The proposed control scheme can improve the SOC balancing efficiency and remove the current deviation by using the SOC slope-adjusting and current-shifting approaches simultaneously. The average value of SOC can be derived through the LBC line, and the droop coefficient based on SOC can be controlled in the local control layer. Thus, the SOC of each sub-module can converge to the average SOC value in system dynamic process, and the balancing speed under the condition of low SOC difference between sub-modules can be improved. Furthermore, the current regulation performance in steady and transient states can be enhanced by using the proposed method. An improved two-stage model predictive current control (MPCC) for three-phase three-level converters in the paper, which can simultaneously achieve common-mode voltage (CMV) reduction, effective dc-link capacitor voltage control, and decreased computational burden, is proposed. Compared to the other current control strategies, it has the capability of handling multiple control objectives and possesses a simple structure. Furthermore, it greatly reduces the CMV since the peak CMVs of all the candidate voltage vectors are constrained to be less than one sixth of the dc-link voltage. In addition, an optimal two-stage voltage vector selection mechanism is employed in the proposed method. It helps to significantly reduce the computational complexity. This paper analytically derives oscillatory stability criteria of a grid-connected PMSG based on the block diagram model. The derivation reveals the general mechanism about how the condition of grid connection, loading and converter control parameters setting of the PMSG jointly affect the oscillatory stability of the PMSG. It logically explains why the condition of weak grid connection and heavy loading may cause destabilization. In addition, computationally simple and modal-computation free indices are proposed to identify the instability risk caused by the “improper parameters setting” of the control system of grid side converter (GSC) and the phase locked loop (PLL). Following analytical conclusions are obtained: (1) When the PLL is of high-frequency bandwidth, high-frequency oscillations are mainly caused by the PLL or the open-loop modal resonance between the PLL and current control of the GSC. In addition, the low-frequency oscillations may also occur as caused by the power control of the GSC. (2) When the PLL is of low-frequency bandwidth, low-frequency oscillations may be caused jointly by the power control of GSC and the PLL. An example grid-connected wind farm with eighteen similar PMSGs is presented to demonstrate and evaluate the stability criteria derived and analytical conclusions obtained in the paper. This paper proposes a model predictive control (MPC) method for modular-multilevel-converter (MMC) high-voltage direct current (HVDC). To control the MMC-HVDC system properly, the ac current, circulating current, and submodule (SM) capacitor voltage are taken into consideration. The existing MPC methods for the MMC-HVDC system utilize weighting factors to configure the cost function in combinations of the SM capacitor voltage balancing algorithm, ac current control, and circulating current control. Because all combinations of the switch states are considered in order to minimize the cost function, their possible combinations increase geometrically according to the increase of the level of the MMC, which is a significant disadvantage. This paper proposes a new MPC method with a reduced number of states for ac current control, circulating current control, and the SM capacitor voltage-balancing algorithm. The proposed cost functions are divided into three types according to their control purposes. Each cost function determines the minimum number of states for controlling the ac current, circulating current, and SM capacitor voltage. A soft starter is commonly utilized in various industrial induction motor systems to reduce the inrush current during motor startup. The conventional voltage ramp-up method, used in the typical soft starter, gradually increases the voltage over the startup period. However, this method can result in a significant voltage increase as the induction motor approaches its rated speed, resulting in a rapid torque increase compared to the beginning part of the startup phase. This sudden torque increase can potentially cause physical damage to the induction motor system due to a transient current overshoot, which in turn can result in resonance. Additionally, the changes in the parameters of the induction motors can lead to the variations in torque during startup, especially because of the air gap permeance. Therefore, a firing angle control method for the soft starter that maintains a constant torque, facilitating a gradual increase in speed, is desirable. This paper proposes a novel firing angle control method, to achieve a constant torque and a gradual speed increase, using only current feedback. This paper is the first time that a change in air gap permeance is considered and compensated for in controlling the firing angle of the soft starter. The air gap permeance variation is modeled as an effective inertia in the transient response of the induction motor. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method effectively reduces rapid torque increases and speed variations compared to the conventional voltage ramp-up method, through its application to a 30kW industrial induction motor system.

Due to the relatively low operational reliability of the MMC valve, it is necessary to establish corresponding test methods to examine the tolerance of the valve to electrical and thermal stresses under engineering requirements through operational tests, to verify its operational reliability. To meet the operational testing requirements for higher voltage and larger current converter valves, an appropriate test topology is required. The paper first analyzes the voltage and current stress characteristics of capacitor components and MMC converter valves in ±800 kV/8 GW Flexible DC transmission system, providing a theoretical basis for the stress of operational testing valve, requiring that to be equivalent to actual operating conditions. Addressing the operational testing demands for high voltage and large current converter valves in the ±800 kV/8 GW flexible DC transmission MMC, a test topology is proposed. This topology can meet the operating conditions of higher voltage and larger current and simultaneously conduct tests on valve segments and modules, significantly improving operational testing efficiency and reducing testing costs. Additionally, a control method applicable to this test topology is proposed, enabling flexible adjustment of DC and AC in the test circuit, thereby enhancing the equivalency of operational tests. In this paper, the proposed topology and control method have enhanced testing efficiency, reduced testing costs, improved testing equivalence, and enhanced the precision of current and capacitor voltage control. Finally, simulations and experiments are constructed to validate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed operational test topology and its control method through simulations and experiments.

This paper introduces modeling and control of a cascaded flying capacitor bridge (CFCB) multilevel converter for a solid-state transformer. The finite control set-model predictive control (FCS-MPC) is easy and simple to implement for many applications. However, the computational complexity increases with the increase in the number of switches. Furthermore, as the number of control variables increases, the weighting factors also increase. Thus, it is difficult to apply to a system with a large number of switches and variables to be controlled similar to a CFCB multilevel converter. In this paper, the proposed method divides variables such as current, dc-link voltage, and flying capacitor voltage into layers. The proposed method reduces the number of states to be considered in the control, which shortens the computational time and simplifies expansion of the flying capacitor bridge. In addition, since weighting factors are not used, there is no tradeoff between current quality and voltage quality, and there is no difficulty in selecting weighting factors. Algorithms that include a method for compensating for the distortion caused by the delay of the digital control system are also described. This paper is focused on a dual-loop current control method (grid current loop and fundamental current loop) for digitally controlled LCL-type shunt active power filters (APFs). Normally, a proportional-resonant (PR) unit is used as the fundamental current controller, where the proportional part of PR unit actually serves as the proportional feedback of inverter-side current and provides a certain degree of damping for LCL resonance. However, its valid damping region is only up to one-sixth of the sampling frequency (fs/6), which leads to less robustness to the grid impedance. To address this issue, a delay-compensation control link is proposed in this paper to replace the proportional part of the PR fundamental current controller and widen the effective damping region. As a result, the system robustness is improved without adding extra sensors or introducing an extra active damping loop. Theoretical analysis proves that it can obtain a wider damping region of (0, fs/4). Moreover, a systematic controller parameter design criterion is studied. In particular, a numerical optimization algorithm is developed to optimize damping property, and a design method based on root locus plot and Bode diagram is presented to enhance harmonic compensation accuracy. Shunt active power filter (SAPF) is widely used for compensating harmonic current produced by nonlinear loads. As one of the critical technologies, the current control strategy has an important influence on the compensation precision and dynamic response performance. In this paper, the essential of the current-limiting demands for the comprehensive protection of SAPF are revealed, namely the limiting control objects: first, rms of the compensation current (mainly for the overheat protection of IGBTs and inductors), second, the instantaneous wave of compensating current (mainly for the accurate current control and IGBT Icnom specification), and third, the instantaneous wave of PWM-VSC modulation voltage (for the need of liner close-loop control). To avoid the over-current fault and over-modulation fault of SAPF, this paper proposes an improved current-limiting scheme based on particle swarm optimization (PSO) to achieve the two optimization targets: the minimization THD for the grid-side current, and the maximization utilization ratio for the capacity of SAPF. The main advantage lies on the optimum limiting ratios of each harmonic order calculated in real time, respectively, to achieve the flexible and liner limiting control. In addition, taking the control structure consisting of selective harmonic detection under the multiple rotating reference frame and the single PI current loop, for example, this paper gives the method for steady-state error correction qualitatively and quantitatively, which employs the method based on the frequency response characteristics analysis. Electric grid codes are expected to change in near future to accommodate an increased number of distributed generation units in the distribution power system without impairing its power quality. It is desired that the generators remain connected during voltage sags and provide ancillary services, such as voltage and reactive power control, ensuring the operational stability of the power system. This paper explores how the existing strategies for active and reactive power injection impact the operation of grid-tied inverters in terms of required power, current flowing, and reduction of active power delivery during the voltage sags. Such inputs are relevant to properly size converters for operation under fault events. In addition, this paper contributes to devise: 1) constant peak current control, 2) constant active current control, and 3) constant average active power control strategies for three-phase four-wire grid-tied inverters considering the natural (abc) reference frame. The design and implementation of the investigated power injection strategies are discussed, and their effectiveness and technical viability are analyzed through dynamic computational simulations under symmetrical/asymmetrical voltage sags, and variation of the short-circuit ratio. The use of LCL filters is a well-accepted solution to attenuate the harmonics created by the pulsewidth modulation. However, inherently LCL filters have a resonance region where the unwanted harmonics are amplified, which can compromise stability. Several techniques have been developed in order to tackle this issue. At first the use of passive damping, by intentionally increasing the resistance of the LCL filter components, is a simple, robust, and straightforward solution; however, it decreases the overall efficiency of the system, and hence in general is unwanted. Alternatively, active damping strategies, where the resonance damping is provided by the current controller, are of major interest. This paper analyzes the robustness of the closed-loop dynamics when different active damping techniques are implemented. The analyzed active damping techniques, which have been selected because of their readiness and simplicity, are: 1) filtered capacitor voltage feedforward and 2) second-order filters in cascade with the main current controller. The impedance/admittance stability formulation is used to model the system, which has been proven to be very convenient for the assessment of robustness. Experimental tests are provided in order to show the accuracy of the analysis and verify the findings. This paper analyzes the influence of phase-locked loop (PLL) on the stability of LCL-type single-phase grid-connected asymmetrical cascaded H-bridge multilevel inverter (ACHMI) with synchronous reference frame proportional-integral (SRF-PI) grid current control under weak grid scenarios. The ACHMI system is composed of power stage circuit and control system, where the control system contains the dual-loop current control strategy established in the hybrid reference frame, the SRF-PLL, and the hybrid modulation method employed to synthesize the multilevel output voltage. The small-signal model of the whole ACHMI system is first established by using a simple step-by-step derivation method, and then, the small-signal analysis method is adopted to linearize the ACHMI, which is then utilized to derive the impedance model of the ACHMI system. Furthermore, an improved impedance stability criterion is derived, which is then employed to analyze the system stability. By using this criterion, the stability of the ACHMI can be evaluated with the variation of the bandwidth of PLL, the output power factor angle of the ACHMI, and the amplitude of the grid current reference signal under weak grid conditions. In this paper, a systematic design procedure for the optimal selection of the PI controller of the PLL is presented, which guarantees the steady-state performance and dynamic response of the ACHMI system. With this design method, the dual-loop current control and PLL can be taken into account simultaneously when analyzing the stability margin of the ACHMI. A recent paper by Hoffmann et al. presents a discrete-time model in a rotating $dq$ reference frame of an R-L filter and its current control. The purpose of this note is, first, to show that the discrete model presented in the paper behaves differently to the sampled continuous-time model of the plant, formulated in the stationary $\alpha \beta$ reference frame; second, to find the proper discretization of the plant in $dq$ coordinates; and third, to verify that there is cross coupling between axes $d$ and $q$ in the closed-loop system if the original model is used, and that this coupling is not present when using the model found in this note. In this paper, the application of SMES system in the electrical multiple unit (EMU) was studied. With a new type of SMES rectifier and its novel control strategy, the EMU could immune through the over-phase region from the power off. The overvoltage impact on the related equipment due to the frequent power switch could also be reduced. With the combination of the DQ current decoupling control and transient direct control, the output power quality of the motor train grid side was obviously improved and the voltage adjustment time was significantly improved. The grid side harmonic was also suppressed, and the harmonic content was obviously reduced. In order to solve the parameter dependence problem in model predictive control, an improved model predictive current control (MPCC) method based on the incremental model for surface-mounted permanent-magnet synchronous motor drives is proposed in this paper. First, the parameter sensitivity of a conventional MPCC method is analyzed, which indicates that the parameter mismatches would cause prediction current error and inaccurate delay compensation. Therefore, an incremental prediction model is introduced in this paper to eliminate the use of permanent magnetic flux linkage in a prediction model. Among the parameter of the incremental prediction model, only inductance mismatch contributes to the prediction error, since the influence of resistance mismatch on the control performance is very small. Therefore, in order to improve the antiparameter-disturbance capability of the MPCC method, an inductance disturbance controller, which includes the inductance disturbance observer and inductance extraction algorithm, is presented to update accurate inductance information for the whole control system in real time. Finally, simulation and experimental results both show that the proposed method can effectively eliminate the influence of the parameter mismatches on the control performance and reduce the parameter sensitivity of the MPCC method. This paper analyzes a cost-effective modification of the power topology commonly found in small wind turbine systems based on a passive rectifier and a boost converter. The boost-converter inductor and the input filter capacitor often placed at the rectifier output can be replaced by the generator-phase inductance. Different controller structures have been proposed for this low-cost inverter, but they have been focused on the converter itself rather than the overall turbine control. Moreover, only steady-state behavior has been demonstrated. This paper proposes a control structure only requiring retuning of the boost-current controller found in systems equipped with boost inductance, with other control loops remaining unchanged. The inductorless converter dynamic performance is studied and compared with the conventional topology in terms of current- and torque-control capability. The system efficiency, including the losses’ distribution in the generator, is analyzed. Simulation and experimental results are presented to demonstrate the technical viability of this proposal. Model predictive control (MPC) is emerging as a powerful control method for the high performance control of permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drives due to its merits of simple principle, quick response, and flexibility to handle multiple variables and constraints. However, conventional MPC applies only one voltage vector during one control period to minimize the cost function, which produces relatively high steady-state ripples and high computational burden due to the enumeration-based predictions. Introducing duty cycle control into MPC can improve its steady-state performance, but the control complexity is further increased. This paper proposes a generalized multiple-vector-based MPC for PMSM drives, which unifies the prior MPC methods in one frame with much lower complexity and computational burden by eliminating the enumeration-based predictions and complex calculations in conventional MPC methods. This is achieved by reconstructing the three-phase duties obtained from the classical deadbeat control with modulator, which also reveals the inherent relationship between deadbeat control and the proposed MPC methods. This paper deals with the setting-parameter optimization procedure for a multiphase induction heating system considering transverse flux heating. This system is able to achieve uniform static heating of different thin/size metal pieces without movable inductor parts, yokes, or magnetic screens. The goal is reached by the predetermination of the induced power-density distribution using an optimization procedure that leads to the required inductor supplying currents. The purpose of the paper is to describe the optimization program with the different solution obtained and to show that some compromise must be done between the accuracy of the temperature profile and the energy consumption, with the calculation of the losses. This paper proposes advanced control strategies to enhance fault ride-through capability of modular multilevel converter-based high voltage direct current (MMC-HVDC) connected doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG)-based wind farms. A stepwise voltage drop control is proposed for the sending-end MMC to suppress dc line voltage fluctuations by demagnetizing DFIGs. Meanwhile, a modified transient current control is proposed for the DFIG, where a voltage-dependent active current control is integrated into the rotor-side converter to improve synchronization stability of the converter, and a feedforward transient stator current control structure is designed to eliminate dc component in the stator current. The protection and current flow regulation of high-voltage direct-current (HVDC) grids requires the deployment of additional semiconductor-based equipment including dc circuit breakers (DCCBs) and current flow controllers (CFCs). However, the inclusion of multiple devices could significantly increase the total cost of an HVDC system. To potentially reduce costs, this paper presents an innovative multi-function integrated DCCB (MF-ICB). The proposed device exhibits a reduced number of semiconductor switches and can fully block dc faults at different locations while regulating dc currents. The configuration of the integrated solution and its operating principle are assessed, with its performance being examined in PSCAD/EMTDC using a three-terminal HVDC grid. The digital implementation of all the control loops of a versatile buck-boost (VBB) dc–dc converter used in a stand-alone photovoltaic application is proposed in this paper to improve existing digital-analog sliding-mode-based implementations. All three control loops: maximum power point tracking (MPPT), fast input voltage regulation, and inner high-bandwidth current control, have been programmed in the same digital signal controller (DSC). A Model Predictive Control (MPC) based algorithm has satisfactorily solved the challenge of implementing the nominal 100 kHz switching frequency current loop. The MPC cost function is distributed throughout the algorithm to achieve three specific goals: the tracking of the reference current (G1), a quasi-constant steady-state switching frequency (G2), and the assurance that the duration of an interval is larger than the time required to calculate it (G3). The third goal requires the current control to toggle between peak- and valley-modes depending on the operating point. The correct fulfillment of these control objectives on the proposed MPC-based algorithm has been validated through simulations and experimental tests performed on a purpose built-prototype. In this paper, a fault-tolerant control of a symmetrical six-phase induction generator based on a variable structure strategy is experimentally tested and compared with a classical proportional-integral controller. For this, we use a linear feedback sliding mode controller with switched feedback gains in such a way to control the inner current loops of this machine. One main drawback of the classical three-phase induction generator is that it is no longer possible to generate electrical power if only one phase is lost on the stator side. To overcome this issue, we will use a squirrel cage six-phase induction machine that can still operate when at least three phases remain on the stator side. This article proposes to use a variable structure control in order to cope with unbalanced currents and also maintain the generation of power when a loss of the stator's phases occurs. The proposed controller shows its robustness and good regulation performance in healthy and faulty modes. This paper presents a multiphase induction system modeling for a metal disc heating and further industrial applications such as hot strip mill. An original architecture, with three concentric inductors supplied by three resonant current inverters, leads to a reduced element system, without any coupling transformers, phase loop, mobile screens, or mobile magnetic cores as it could be found in classical solutions. A simulation model is built, based on simplified equivalent models of electric and thermal phenomena. It takes into account the data extracted from Flux2D finite-element software, concerning the energy transfer between the inductor currents and the piece to be heated. It is implemented in a versatile software PSIM, initially dedicated to power electronics. An optimization procedure calculates the optimal supply currents in the inverters in order to obtain a desired power density profile in the work piece. This paper investigates application of an unconstrained model predictive controller (MPC) known as a finite horizon linear quadratic regulator (LQR) for current control of a switched reluctance motor (SRM). The proposed LQR can cope with the measurement noise as well as uncertainties within the machine inductance profile. This paper utilizes MPC to generate the optimal duty cycles for drive of SRMs using pulse-width modulation (PWM) in oppose to delta-modulation. In this paper, first a practical MPC scheme for embedded implementation of the system is introduced. Afterward, Kalman filtering is used for state estimation while an adaptive controller is used to dynamically tune and update both MPC and Kalman models. Hence, the overall control structure is considered as a stochastic MPC with adaptive model calibration.
