With the introduction of automated driving, new requirements for the design and control of a vehicle powernet and powertrain arise, since the increasing level of driving automation shifts the responsibility for passengers’ safety from a driver towards automation system. Therefore, the functionality of the subsystems required for the automated transition to a standstill in case of a failure must be guaranteed. The work presented in this paper proposes a novel and generic system architecture for the energy management of a fail-operational powernet and powertrain in fault-free and failure case operation. The underlying control strategy is based on a concept enabling safety based range extension with the main goal to complete a driving mission at the safest possible location for the passengers. The proposed Energy Management System (EMS) approximates a driving trajectory to the destination based on route preview, which is then used for the dynamic optimization of the torque split in a powertrain with multiple motors. In this way, the total energy required for propulsion, which is also used as an input for the energy distribution, can be accurately predicted. The optimal distribution of the energy for the supply of safety-critical subsystems and powernet auxiliaries is then estimated by solving a mixed-integer optimization problem. If the desired driving mission cannot be completed, a three-level-degradation concept adapting the driving mission is applied. The individual modules of the EMS are presented in this paper and a system architecture enabling model predictive and adaptive energy distribution in a vehicle powertrain and powernet with automated fault reactions is proposed and exemplified with simulation results. IEEE Reliability Society is pleased to announce a call for papers to be published in a special section of IEEE Transactions on Reliability with expected publication period in spring 2013, pending sufficient acceptable papers by that time. This issue will focus specifically on the challenges and technologies surrounding battery reliability and safety. The objective of this special issue is to highlight the pressing needs and potential solutions to challenges relating to battery safety and reliability. Further development of batteries for use as portable power sources and energy storage systems is regarded as a top priority for research and development. Technologies introduced over the past decade, from smaller and more powerful portable electronic devices to zero emission electric vehicles, are all indicative of the need for improved battery systems. However, the improvement of cell energy and power densities cannot come at the expense of safety, cost, and reliability. Penetration of new technologies such as electric vehicles into a traditionally fossil fuel dominated industry can be easily thwarted by claims of "lack of safety." Additionally, millions of dollars in financial losses can be incurred if a battery safety event results in a device recall. Therefore, it is important that advancements in reliability and performance run in parallel with advancements in safety. This paper presents study of design characteristics with wide constant power speed range (CPSR) for electric vehicle Propulsion. Through analysis of interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) control logic, design characteristic of extending CPSR is proposed. To achieve wide CPSR, center of voltage limit ellipse should be placed at cross point of current limit circle and d -axis. To analyze characteristic of voltage ellipse, four types of representative IPMSM rotor topologies are selected. Through rotor topology analysis, tendency of \phi _{f} and L_{\mathrm{ ds}} $ parameters which decide center of voltage limit ellipse is analyzed. This paper also considers shifting of voltage limit ellipse center according to change in motor speed. Reflecting the result, this paper focuses on center of voltage limit ellipse position at maximum speed, because central coordinates of high-speed range determine characteristics of CPSR. This paper proposes a traction unit that combines an interior permanent magnet motor and a PM-assisted synchronous reluctance motor for electric vehicles to improve traction performance, enhance energy efficiency, and reduce cost. The characteristics of three traction units are analyzed and compared, including (a) rear-wheel-drive configuration using one IPM motor; (b) all-wheel-drive configuration using two interior permanent magnet motors; and (c) all-wheel-drive with a combination of one interior permanent magnet motor and one PM-assisted synchronous reluctance as proposed in this paper. The operational characteristics of each motor to achieve a wide constant power speed range are first investigated. Then, the Urban Dynamometer Driving Schedule is utilized to compare and evaluate the operational characteristics, energy consumption, and most importantly, the efficiency of the traction units. Simulation results reveal that the overall efficiency of the proposed traction unit can be improved compared to the other configurations. This paper presents a decomposed co-design optimization framework for an electric vehicle powertrain equipped with a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT). We jointly design the sizes of the powertrain components and the energy management strategy, considering the design and the dynamics of the transmission. Specifically, we divide the resulting nonlinear optimization problem into separate hierarchical optimization subproblems leveraging the concept of Analytical Target Cascading (ATC). Furthermore, we compare the proposed decomposition-based strategy with a centralized approach, in which we solve the same problem, and show that the method presented in this paper can be a potential alternative to a centralized optimization formulation for solving the large-scale, complex integrated plant and control system design. Finally, we compare the resulting performance of using a CVT on the vehicle total-cost-of-ownership with that equipped with a Fixed-Gear Transmission (FGT), which is what is commonly implemented in current electric vehicles. Our results show that by jointly optimizing the design of the transmission along with the control strategy, the CVT yields a lower energy consumption and total-cost-of-ownership compared to that of the FGT. Electric vehicles (EVs) have attracted enormous attention in recent years due to their potentials in mitigating energy crisis and air pollutions. However, the long battery charging time and lack of sufficient charging infrastructure highly restrict the popularization of EVs. In this context, it is promising to establish battery charging and swapping systems (BCSSs) based on the concept of battery swapping services. To optimally achieve the combined operation of BCSSs, this paper proposes a hybrid swapped battery charging and logistics dispatch model in continuous time domain. Identifying the special structure of the mathematical models of the two problems, this paper innovatively formulated the swapped battery charging strategy as the rectangle packing problem and the battery logistics model as the vehicle routing problem. The two models are closely linked by the delivery time of transporting the well-charged batteries from battery charging stations to battery swapping stations. A hybrid optimal operation model of BCSSs is further formulated as a mixed-integer linear programming model by incorporating the interaction between the battery charging and battery logistics. Variable leakage flux (VLF) interior permanent-magnet synchronous machines (IPMSMs), which use intentional magnet leakage flux paths cross-coupled with the q-axis flux paths to reduce losses over driving cycles, have been introduced recently, but self-sensing has not been discussed for these machines. This paper focuses on the saliency angular offset attributes that are the primary metric for the well-established injection-based self-sensing methods. This paper begins by evaluating the effect of the intentionally designed cross-coupling in the VLF-IPMSM with rotor surface bridges on the saliency angular offset. This paper then proposes alternate rotor designs with side-loop structure that cause relatively linear and well-behaved cross-coupling that improves the load-dependent saliency angular offset characteristics. The effect of VLF properties on power conversion and driving cycle loss reduction capability is evaluated for the proposed designs. This paper also applies the concept of VLF design to conventional flux-weakening interior permanent-magnet machine rotor design and presents the loss reduction capability of such designs. The wirelessly transferred power as well as charging efficiency will significantly drop due to the large misalignment between the transmitting coil and receiving coil for roadway electric vehicles (EVs). A low-cost and reliable misalignment-tolerant wireless charging technique is indispensable for the rapid commercialization of wireless EV charging. This paper presents a technique to achieve the misalignment-tolerant wireless charging for the dynamic wireless charging (DWC) system by means of a tunneling magnetoresistive (TMR) sensor array as well as the easy-to-fabricate receiving coils. The TMR sensor array provides the coil-misalignment position by measuring the magnetic field component generated from the transmitting coil. The corresponding receiving coils are selected to be in resonance according to the measured coil-misalignment positions. In this paper, a sensor array composed of 29 uniaxial TMR sensors was utilized to measure the magnetic field component. This effectiveness of the proposed technique has been validated by both the finite-element method (FEM) simulations and laboratory experiments. The experimental results demonstrated that the proposed misalignment-tolerant wireless charging system can operate in a relatively wide misalignment range of ±120 mm with charging efficiency higher than 76.2%. This paper proposes a novel modular relieving-dc-saturation Vernier reluctance machine for electric vehicle application, which integrates the merits of a robust structure, controllable excitation field, strong fault-tolerant capacity, and enhanced torque density, benefiting from its special relieving-dc-saturation design. In the proposed machine, zero-sequence current establishes a modular magnetic path and functions as the dominant excitation source for the torque generation. Especially, slot permanent magnets are introduced into each module, which mitigates the saturation effect in stator core caused by dc-biased flux with the zero-sequence current source. Therefore, the proposed machine can achieve enhanced torque density with relatively high current density. In this paper, the machine structure and operation principle are illustrated in detail, with its electromagnetic performance evaluated by time-stepping finite-element analysis. This paper proposes a new Vernier reluctance machine (VRM) drive for electric vehicle. The key is to incorporate both stator-slot permanent magnets (PMs) and zero-sequence current as the excitation source to establish a parallel magnetic field and interact with armature winding. In this way, two different machines, namely, slot-PM-excited VRM and dc-excited doubly salient machine, are artificially integrated into a single structure, which contributes to enhance the torque density. Moreover, flexible flux control can be realized by regulating zero-sequence current. This paper proposes a novel emulation system for emulating the power system in the fuel cell electric vehicle. The major purpose of the proposed emulation system is to test the dc–dc converter between the fuel cell and high-voltage powertrain. The bidirectional buck–boost type dc–dc converter is applied in the emulation system as the basic elements. A modularized approach is presented for easily scaling up and down the power level of the emulation system. Meanwhile, an energy loop structure is implemented in the proposed emulation system for power capability boosting purpose. Because of the proposed energy loop configuration, the emulation system offers long-term running capability with high power rating without the grid connection. A neutral current control mechanism is applied in this paper to further enhance the long-term testing capability as well as extending the lifespan for the battery packages. The simulation studies are proposed in this paper to validate the control mechanisms of the emulation system. This paper presents the design and performance details of the Chevrolet Volt electric propulsion system. The propulsion system has two machines: One machine is operating mostly as a motor while the other machine is operating mostly as a generator. Both machines of the Volt electric drive system are permanent-magnet ac synchronous machine types with the magnets buried inside the rotor. The motor has distributed windings. However, as opposed to a conventional stranded winding, the Chevrolet Volt motor has bar-wound construction to improve the motor performance, particularly in the low to medium speed range. At higher speed, the skin and proximity effects in the stator bars lead to increased stator winding losses but are addressed in the design. The bar-wound construction also has excellent thermal performance, in both the steady-state and transient conditions, necessary for full electric vehicle (EV) driving. The generator uses concentrated windings. The concentrated winding construction has good slot fill and short end-turn length. These features resulted in good performance in the intended operational region and were an enabler for machine packaging inside the transmission. Both the machines exhibit excellent efficiency and exceptionally smooth and quiet operation. The fuel efficiencies of Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs) depend heavily on the control concepts, especially on energy management strategies, because the system efficiency of the vehicle is determined by the exploitation of the electric energy. Control concepts based on optimal control theories like Dynamic Programming (DP) or Pontryagin's Minimum Principle (PMP) have been widely studied over the last two decades, and it has been proven that these control concepts provide near-optimal solutions if future driving conditions are given prior to actual driving. However, it is difficult to apply to real vehicles unless the future driving conditions are known. In this paper, a well-known control strategy based on PMP has been developed, which needs only current driving conditions. The significance of the study is that the control concept introduced herein was evaluated in the IEEE VTS Challenge 2018 competition. It produced the best results in terms of the total energy consumption, where 52 controllers had been competing to minimize the energy consumption in unknown driving cycles. Although the control system was designed from traditional PMP-based control, it becomes a practicable and effective solution by using an adaptive concept for balancing State Of Charge (SOC) of a battery. Lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries have been used in a wide variety of applications, ranging from portable electronics to electric vehicles. During repetitive charging and discharging, a battery's capacity fades due to electrochemical reactions such as solid electrolyte interphase growth. Li-ion batteries reach an end-of-life (EOL) point, after which using them is not recommended. However, some unhealthy batteries reach their EOL sooner than expected. A qualification test is usually conducted to evaluate the reliability of Li-ion batteries and classify unhealthy batteries, but this test requires several months. This paper develops a data-driven method to reduce the qualification time by detecting anomalies before EOL. This method detects an anomaly in the capacity fade curve of unhealthy batteries based on their capacity fade trend. Since the developed method detects anomalies of unhealthy batteries before EOL, the method is effective in reducing the time for the qualification test of Li-ion batteries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents a dynamic thermal model which predicts the winding temperature of electrical machines at steady-state and transient conditions where windings are used in integrated battery chargers (IBCs) for DC charging in a stationary position. Using winding in high current charging process causes rising winding temperature which affects insulation life. Switched reluctance machines are a proper choice for using in electric vehicles (EVs) because of their advantages such as simple and sturdy structures. IBCs can reduce volume and weight of EVs and total cost is diminished because of integration. The analytical thermal model proposed in this paper can calculates the winding temperature in balanced and unbalanced currents injection because of the phase inductance in each rotor angle is distinct, so current excitation in each phase should be different for obtaining zero total torque and keeping rotor in a stationary position, also a reduced-order model is proposed with minor impact on the accuracy of the model. Special attention has been paid to monitor the winding temperature with considering the motor lifetime in DC charging mode, this view has not been addressed in IBCs before. The increasing of electric vehicles (EVs) alleviates the faced environmental problems but brings challenges to the optimal operation of transportation network (TN) and distribution network (DN). However, the most of existing research works consider EV charging station assignment and navigation services in the TN separately from charging station power scheduling services in the DN. To overcome this research gap, this paper proposes a collaborative optimal routing and scheduling (CORS) method, providing optimal route to charging stations and designing optimized charging scheduling schemes for each EV. In the order of reporting, whenever an EV reports its charging demand, a CORS optimization model is built and solved so that a specific charging scheme is designed for that EV. Then, the TN and DN status is updated to guide the subsequent EVs operating. The proposed CORS integrates the real-time state of the TN and DN, and effects positive benefits in helping EVs to avoid traffic congestion, improving the utilization level of charging facilities and enhancing charging economy. The combined distributed biased min consensus algorithm and generalized benders decomposition algorithm are adopted to solve the complex nonlinear optimization problem. Power systems are facing the challenges of integrating massive electric vehicles (EVs) and lacking operational flexibility. An optimal and efficient coordination strategy is needed to coordinate the operations among EV charging stations (CSs) and the distribution system operator (DSO) and to make full use of the EVs’ charging flexibility for improving the operational flexibility of power systems. To this end, this paper proposes a CSs-DSO distributed coordination strategy. The proposed strategy integrates a supply-curve-based quantification method to quantify the EVs’ flexibility contribution and a Nash bargaining game-theory-based peer-to-peer (P2P) transactions model for maximizing the profits of entities participating in the coordination. To tackle the CSs-DSO coordination problem that has a bi-level-parallel coupling structure, an analytical target cascading (ATC) and alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) jointly-based distributed solution approach is proposed. First, the CSs-DSO bi-level model is decoupled by ATC with tie-line power being the only exchanged information; then, the model is further decomposed for each CS by ADMM for protecting the CSs’ privacy and autonomy. The effect of coordination and the computational efficiency of the proposed strategy is verified by numerical simulations on a modified IEEE 33-bus distribution system connecting multiple CSs. A modified configuration for Permanent Magnet Assisted Synchronous Reluctance Motors (PMaSyRM) is studied in this paper. Conventionally, the PM materials are inserted in the flux barriers region of the rotor. Consequently, the PMs sizing parameters will be restricted to the available space that may limit the efficient use of PMs benefits. In this study, a portion of the rotor structure is replaced with an Interior PM (IPM) rotor so that an axially segmented integration of IPM and SyRM is obtained. Thus, the PMs design is performed specifically in the IPM segment independent of the SyRM scheme, while the SyRM segment remains PM-less. The main motivation of this concept is to improve the contribution of the PM material in the total torque as well as utilizing the special property of the proposed rotor configuration for pulsating torque reduction. A computationally cost-effective algorithm is proposed for the optimal design of IPM-SyRM motor by which a low-power design is carried out for a lightweight electric vehicle. The results for torque profile characteristics, PM volume, power-factor, and efficiency are compared with a conventional PMaSyRM that has been optimally designed as the reference case. The work presented in this paper describes a multi-issue negotiation protocol between active consumers and a management platform in order to establish load coordination in a highly congested network. The multi-issue negotiation protocol considers simultaneously the consumption interval, the price, and the size of the energy packages, which is the main contribution of this work. Regarding the implementation methodology, the proposed algorithms have been implemented using MATLAB classes that allow emulating the behaviour of a multi-agent system in which each vehicle is an agent that interacts with the platform, which is another agent. In the present work, and without loss of generality, the algorithm is applied to coordinate the charging of electric vehicles (EVs) in a distribution network in which building loads represent critical loads. The algorithm is tested in a realistic environment, and its stability and performance are evaluated. Autonomous electric vehicles (AEVs) are gaining ground around the world. They are equipped with intelligent decision-making capabilities that allow them to optimize on their battery usage and engage in energy trading for profit maximization. This paper envisions a market model, where energy aggregators considers buying and selling electricity from AEVs. In this system, the aggregators reside on cloudlets at the edge of a cloud computing system for prompt communication and negotiation with AEVs. Whether they are parked or en-route, AEVs can be crowdsourced to provide energy to consumers at needed times. This study proposes double auction models to incentivize AEV agents to participate in the market based on their time preferences and energy pricing. The proposed system implements dynamic pricing structures, which are applicable to various scenarios of energy trading. To evaluate the proposed system, this paper provides extensive theoretical analysis and simulation experiments to demonstrate that the proposed auctioning models are computationally efficient, truthful, individually rational, and budget balanced. Fractional-slot concentrated-winding (FSCW) interior permanent magnet synchronous motors (IPMSMs) have been attracting considerable attention due to their high power density, high efficiency, short end winding, high slot fill factor, low cogging torque, excellent flux-weakening, and fault tolerance capability. However, compared to integral-slot distributed-winding (ISDW) IPMSMs, the key challenge of using FSCW configurations is the significant rotor losses, particularly at high speed. To figure out the IPMSM with which winding configuration is more suitable for electric vehicle (EV) application, the thermal behaviors of four IPMSMs with ISDW, single-, double-, and four-layer FSCWs are comprehensively and comparatively investigated in this paper. First, electromagnetic design and loss analysis of the four IPMSMs are investigated to meet the EV traction motor requirements. Second, finite-element method is employed to investigate the thermal performance of the IPMSMs under different rotational speeds and torque overload capacities. Thirdly, experiments implemented on an ISDW prototype are carried out to validate the presented analysis method. The purpose of this paper is to review the recent literature regarding the effects of low temperatures on Lithium ion (Li-ion) batteries for electric vehicle, plug-in hybrid electric vehicle, and hybrid electric vehicle applications. Special consideration is given to nine major effects that directly or indirectly impact the battery use at low temperatures and it is presented that they are correlated to each other. The main discussions in this paper are capacity loss, power loss, life degradation, safety hazard, unbalanced capacity, charging difficulty, thermal management system complexity, battery model and state estimation method complexity, and incremental cost. The  power distribution network (PDN) of a high-speed printed circuit board requires a high-performance power supply. The total equivalent inductance above the top ground plane is an important part of PDN design and is regarded as Labove. In this paper, an inductance library for different structures of capacitor connections and capacitor sizes has been built, which is essential for PDN design. computer simulation technology (CST) and partial element equivalent circuit method are applied to obtain the shorted pattern design curves at various design data. The shorted pattern design curve means the total equivalent inductance varies with the distance between pad and ground plane. In addition, an approximate shorted model is established for a decoupling capacitor-mounted model, which will be convenient for us to get the inductance of Labove. It provides, for the first time, a hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) real-time experimental verification case study of a General Motor Chevrolet Volt for power, control systems, and the mechanical systems. The contribution of this paper can be categorized into three approaches: First, each component of the powertrain is accurately modeled taking transient dynamics of all components of the electric vehicle into consideration. Further, a PSIM simulation platform is consequently developed to demonstrate the validity of this mathematical modeling. Finally, the Typhoon HIL is used to provide the experimental verification of the proposed model in real time, which precisely validates the viability of the model. HIL technology is used to prototype and test the proposed control system while simulating the power circuit on the HIL module platform. The permanent magnet synchronous motor and the power electronics hardware components are simulated in real time at which the parameters can be changed during the simulation. However, the control algorithm is generated as a C code and downloaded to the TI controller that exists on a digital signal processing board. The results from the simulation based on PSIM environment and hardware validations using HIL are in agreement, which validates the developed model. The performance has been investigated under different load operating conditions in real time to verify its robustness. This paper presents a novel piecewise-linear robust traction controller for electric vehicles with in-wheel motors. Considering the nonlinear tire force and the time-varying wheel and vehicle speeds, a piecewise-linear parameter-varying (PWLPV) slip-ratio model with disturbances is first established. A novel traction controller is then designed. The key of the traction controller proposed in this paper is to separate the traction torque into a feedforward control torque and a PWLPV feedback control torque to track the desired slip ratio. The feedforward controller is calculated through the desired working point of the PWLPV slip-ratio model. The PWLPV controller can guarantee the closed-loop stability and $H_{\infty }$ performance for disturbance rejection. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed traction controller, both simulations and experiments are performed. A high-fidelity vehicle model in veDYNA is employed for simulation studies. Experiments were carried out on an electric vehicle with in-wheel motors. This paper presents a novel 12/15 radial field C-core switched reluctance motor (SRM) design, which offers combined advantages of axial field and conventional radial field SRM. In addition, the in-wheel implementation of motor with removable rotor without disturbing stator is one of the unique features. It makes this design more beneficial for electrical vehicle application. This arrangement offers good torque with low excitation current. In the rapidly growing field of electrified transportation technology, hybrid electric and electric vehicle (HEV/EV) manufacturers have been placing increasing demands on the designers to improve the efficiency and reduce the costs of vehicle components to sustain a niche in the EV market. To understand the significance and challenges in an efficient and economical drivetrain design, this paper presents a part of an ongoing project that aims at developing a comprehensive study on dc/ac drive motor technology in EV applications. In this paper, a new three-level three-phase matrix converter topology, along with two conventional frequently used three-level three-phase dc/ac converter topologies, namely, diode-clamped and H-bridge converters, are implemented. Furthermore, comprehensive analysis and comparative studies are conducted to examine the performance and efficiency of these converter topologies according to EV design criteria. The existing evaluation methods and indexes of noise of electric motors cannot comprehensively reflect all the physical characteristics of noise of hub permanent-magnet synchronous motors (HPMSM) and human subjective sensations. In this paper, a method of the sound quality (SQ) evaluation of HPMSM for electric vehicles is proposed. The method is divided into three steps. In the first step, a noise objective evaluation of HPMSM with seven acoustical objective indexes, including loudness, roughness, A-weighted sound pressure level (A-W SPL), tonality, sharpness, articulation index (AI), and fluctuation strength, is made. In the second step, a noise subjective evaluation of HPMSM by using the grade evaluation method is made. The subjective annoyances (SA) of noise samples of HPMSM are obtained. In the last step, the SQ evaluation model of HPMSM by using the BP neural network theory is established. The average error rate of the proposed model is only 3.97%. By means of weight analysis, a comparison between the relative importance of acoustical objective parameters is found out. The main original contribution of this paper is that the proposed method can comprehensively reflect all the physical sound characteristics of HPMSM as well as their influence on human subjective sensations. This paper considers an event-triggered mechanism (ETM) for multiple frequency services of electric vehicles (EVs) in smart grids (SGs). A new model of a SG with an ETM and multiple agents of EVs is introduced. ETM is deployed to reduce the load on network bandwidth. EVs are incorporated in both secondary and primary frequency services to suppress frequency fluctuations in the system. The behaviours of EV owners are also considered by using batteries SOC controls. Then, a mathematical model of the system is derived which contains parametric uncertainties due to the incorporation of SOC control, an ETM variable arising from ETM control, and a time-varying delay in both the state and control input vectors. We derive new Lyapunov stability and stabilizability conditions to ensure robust $H_{\infty }$ performance of the closed-loop system. The conditions are derived based on various mathematical tools including relaxed Jensen inequality, free weighting matrix technique, reciprocally convex approach, and matrix inequality for uncertainties. An effective procedure is proposed based on an approach using the state transformation and tractable linear matrix inequalities to synthesis robust static output feedback controller gains. The large-scale application of electric taxis (ETs) in various regions has aroused great interest in developing high-efficiency charging solutions. ETs and charging stations (CSs) can send information to the information management center for real-time information sharing with the technical support of the vehicle-to-grid network. This paper studies the charging problem of intelligent transportation system composed of CSs and networked ETs. Each taxi selects the CS with the lowest charging cost based on the charging price and regional hotspot information. The CS obtains the strategy of taxi and adjusts the charging price to maximize its revenues. We use a multi-leader and multi-follower Stackelberg game to model the interaction between the CSs and ETs. Finally, the hotspot thematic map is generated by using the taxi information of the global positioning system in one day. Simulation results show that the model can effectively reduce the operating cost of taxis and guarantee the revenue of CSs considering the regional hotspot information and reliability coefficient. The increasing penetrations of renewable energy in the electricity sector and plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) in the transportation sector have increased the interests in introducing new methods to deal with uncertainties in power system studies. In this paper, a new distributionally robust optimization (DRO) via scenario wise ambiguity set is proposed to develop a collaborative bidding strategy for intermittent resources such as hydroelectric generation, wind farms, solar farms and electric vehicle aggregator in the day-ahead energy market. The proposed scenario wise ambiguity set is based on Wasserstein distance and is capable of considering both distributional information and statistical distance metric information in the ambiguity set. In this context, the robust counterpart of proposed DRO applying scenario based affine recourse approximation is developed in this paper. This paper aims to propose a new Vernier reluctance machine (VRM), which integrates the advantages of a robust rotor structure, good torque density, and flexible flux control ability. The key is to establish the excitation field with both stator slot permanent magnets (PMs) and zero-sequence current. Two excitation sources have different pole pair numbers but share a parallel magnetic circuit and contribute to superimposed torque in this machine. Meanwhile, a flexible flux control can be achieved by regulating zero-sequence current, and little demagnetization risk exists for slot PMs during flux control. In this paper, the machine configuration and operation principle are introduced, along with its integrated ac and dc drive method. Electromagnetic performance of this new machine is evaluated by finite-element analysis. Leading design parameters are determined and optimized considering optimal injection ratio of zero-sequence current. As the requirements on powertrain efficiency of electric vehicles (EVs) are increasing, integrated motor-transmission (IMT) powertrain systems for EVs are becoming a promising solution. For the integration of IMT powertrain systems, the system state information and the actuator status are usually required for the closed-loop controller design or the on-board fault diagnosis. Embracing the demands, an observer for simultaneous estimation of input and system state of an IMT powertrain system is studied in this paper. It is well-known that controller area network (CAN) has been dominant in the vehicle network, which is used to communicate among controllers, sensors, and actuators. However, the CAN bus always induces time-varying delays when there are a number of communication nodes on the bus. The CAN-bus induced delay would result in vibrations in the vehicle powertrain or even deterioration of the entire closed-loop system. To deal with the CAN-bus induced delay in the estimation work for IMT powertrain systems, the potential random delays are considered in a three-state nonlinear model which represents the behavior of an IMT system. To estimate the input and state simultaneously, an adaptive unscented Kalman filter (AUKF) is adopted. As we know, the adopted AUKF has the benefits of dealing with system nonlinearities and calculating the noise covariance matrix automatically. Simulations and comparisons are carried out. We can see from the results that the proposed observer estimates the input and system state well. This paper proposes a mutual calibration strategy for multiple current sensors in an electric vehicle motor drive. The motor drive usually consists of three current sensors, i.e., a dc-bus current sensor and two phase current sensors. Due to the aging effect and harsh operating environment, the accuracy uncertainty issue is inevitable in these crucial sensors, which results in poor driving performance. In this paper, the detection voltage injection (DV-Injection) method is proposed for mutual calibration of the aforementioned current sensors. Two opposite basic vectors are set together to detect and eliminate the offset error of the dc-bus current sensor. Then, both the directly measured phase-current values by the phase-current sensors and the indirectly measured values by the dc-bus current sensor are sampled. These values are utilized for mutual calibration of the phase-current sensor offset errors and scaling error differences among all the current sensors. Meanwhile, the DV-Injection process is only applied in the period of calibration process, whereas in the remaining intervals the space vector pulsewidth modulation technology is utilized. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed scheme is verified by simulation study in MATLAB/Simulink and experimental results on a 5-kW interior permanent magnet synchronous motor motor prototype. High reliability and fault-tolerant operation capability are the application requirements of electric vehicles(EVs). In case of the drive system suffering from inter-turn short-circuit (ITSC) fault, it is necessary to avoid the aggravation of the fault and ensure the normal output performance, this paper proposed a torque ripple minimization control strategy for ITSC fault based on the open-winding (OW) five phase fault tolerant fractional slot concentrated winding interior permanent magnet (FTFSCW-IPM) motor drive system with common DC bus. Once the ITSC fault is detected, the fault phase is active open-circuit (OC) (null the current of the normal part in the fault phase) and connected to a voltage sensor. In this way, the torque ripple minimization control strategy can deal with the OC fault and ITSC fault. For the OC fault, the equal amplitude phase current modulation strategy is adopted based on the carrier-based pulse width modulation (CPWM). For the ITSC fault, this paper proposed a feedforward compensation approach to eliminate the influence of the short-circuit loop current. The novelty of the proposed method is that the compensation can be real-time estimated using the zero-sequence voltage (ZSV) and zero-sequence current (ZSC), even the ITSC level changes. A drive train system (DTS) powered by an ideal voltage source and driving a permanent-magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) is discussed in this paper. A two-level three-phase voltage source inverter is used as a means of power conditioning. This converter is not equipped with any harmonic filters on neither the ac nor the dc side. The mechanical part of the DTS is modeled as a double oscillator according to a drive train in an electric vehicle (EV). Various inverter modulation schemes are applied, namely, a single-phase hysteresis scheme, two-space vector-based hysteresis control schemes, for one, a stator aligned hysteresis and for another, a rotor aligned hysteresis, a modulation scheme based on pulsewidth modulation (PWM), such as sinusoidal modulation (including zero-sequence components) and space-vector pulsewidth modulation (SVPWM). The hysteresis-based pulsing methods are nondeterministic and build a current controller in their structure by nature. The other pulsing methods are deterministic due to their underlying PWM and require a separate control unit. The influence of these modulation schemes on the performance of the DTS is determined by assessing the level of inverter generated harmonics flowing to the PMSM and to the tires [downforce, (mechanical part)] as well as the resulting switching frequency (electrical part). The simulated results presented in the paper indicate that the pulsing frequency can be reduced by means of the hysteresis controller. This paper investigates a method to increase fuel economy of motors for an electric vehicle (EV) traction system. The low-torque region of an EV motor is frequently used in everyday urban driving and in fuel economy measurement. Pulsewidth modulation (PWM) carrier harmonic iron loss accounts for a high percentage of total loss for EV motors in this region. This paper reveals the relationship between phase current and carrier harmonic iron loss for a permanent-magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) in the low-torque region. Thus, a novel carrier harmonic loss reduction technique is proposed and applied to two sets of three-phase windings for a concentrated winding PMSM. The loss is successfully reduced in a 70-kW EV motor as well as a two-dimensional finite-element method (2-D-FEM) calculation. The operation of electric vehicles in cold weather is a concern, but there is not a lot of literature available regarding the precise nature of impacts on travel range. Two types of commercial battery electric vehicles, namely, the Nissan Leaf and the Mitsubishi i-MiEV, were driven to depletion across a broad range of temperatures that occur naturally in Winnipeg, MB, Canada, due to its climate. Analysis of data showed that the travel range can be reasonably interpreted as a function of ambient temperature using a series of simple linear segments: an upper plateau above about +20 °C, a lower plateau below about −15 °C, and a linearly varying segment in the middle. Both the Leaf and i-MiEV appeared to follow this model, with a good correlation of data for the middle (linearly varying) segment. Impacts of air conditioning on the travel range were also separately tested. This paper provides guidance for more rigorous assessments of electric-vehicle range performance into the future. This paper presents an online diagnosis method for the supercapacitors' aging problem. State-of-health (SoH) estimation is an important feature since aging introduces degradation in the supercapacitors' performance, which might eventually lead to their failure. SoH is usually measured by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. However, this has to be performed offline and requires interruption of the system's operation. Unlike this method, this paper presents an online diagnosis technique for supercapacitors using an extended Kalman observer as a well-known tool for its particularities and performances to study nonlinear parameter estimation. The main objective of this paper is the online SoH diagnosis based on the supercapacitors' aging indicator estimation. Moreover, the proposed online estimation strategy requires only voltage and current measurements, which reduces the number of sensors with respect to other methods. In this paper, optimization of the control of an electrical machine allowing a minimization of its total losses is described. It is based on the use of an iron loss model [loss surface (LS) model] coupled to the electromagnetic finite-element simulations of the machine. The LS model is a scalar and dynamic hysteresis model developed many years ago at G2Elab and tested for iron loss prediction in several cases of electric machines. It is first characterized and improved in this paper for M330-35A SiFe sheets. Then, it is associated with a finite-element analysis to compute, in a post-processor mode, the local and global magnetic losses in the machine. For electric vehicle application, the whole torque–speed variation should be investigated. To do that, a quick response surface is constructed from a small number of simulations and the iron loss is determined. Then, a suitable optimization algorithm is developed. This approach is then illustrated by a case study and compared with classical optimization in which only the copper losses in conductors are considered. With the popularization of electric vehicles (EVs), the influence on power systems is receiving increasing attention. According to statistics, EVs are in a parking state for more than 90% of the time, thus, the electric energy of the EVs accumulated by aggregators can be used to support the operation of power systems. This paper takes reducing operation costs as the objective function and considers the constraints of EVs and power systems to establish the optimal charging/discharging control of electric vehicles, which meet the operational safety of power systems and convenient driving. The influence on operation costs, peak load, and loss for the proposed charging/discharging two-way control, charging-only control, and free charging modes of EVs are compared. Bidirectional inductive power transfer (BIPT) systems enable power transfer between stationary electricity sources and movable consumers in each direction through electromagnetic coupling. Due to its complexity, a mathematical model is required to design and to control these systems. This paper presents the mathematical analysis and the frequency-domain analysis for two different compensated (series–series and parallel–parallel) BIPT systems. This paper contains the modeling procedure of the BIPT system’s coils in the frequency domain. The prediction of its equivalent circuit values, magnetic stray field values, and coil positioning tolerance are determined as well using the JMAG field simulation software. This paper presents a combinational-logic-based approach for identifying faults that could occur in the drivetrain of an electric vehicle (EV). A real-time simulation model of an EV is used to study the behavior of available sensor signals and control commands, with specific measured quantities, during vehicle operation. Those quantities could be, but are not limited to, mean values of the phase currents, DC bus current, traction motor speed (if available), in addition to control command quantities. Focus is given to these quantities which are abundant in vehicle inverters and controllers for no added sensing costs. Those quantities carry information of offsets and disturbances that could occur under faulty operating conditions compared to nominal operation, and are thus observed and studied under these conditions. Using such information, a method is developed using simple combinational logic and thresholds to diagnose a fault occurring at any time during a vehicle drive cycle. By combining features of measured quantities that behave similarly irrespective of when the fault occurs during a driving cycle, the proposed method is fault-time-insensitive. The proposed method is presented and validated by real-time simulations to capture over 20 different faults injected at different drive cycle times and in different drivetrain components—electric machine, inverter, transmission, and sensors. This paper presents a novel black and white box method for diagnosis and reduction of abnormal noise of the hub permanent-magnet synchronous motors (HPMSMs). The black and white box method is divided into three steps. In the first step, a black-box method is used to identify and diagnose all of the abnormal noise sources and corresponding working conditions including rotational speeds and loading moments of the HPMSM. The proposed black method is independent of the detailed internal parameters of the HPMSM. In the second step, considering the abnormal noise sources and the corresponding working conditions diagnosed by the black-box method, a white-box method is used to propose and verify the electromagnetic field model, the structure vibration model, and the acoustic computation model of the HPMSM. Then, the components of the HPMSM whose vibrations and/or acoustic emissions are the most important are predicted. In the third step, the noise reduction method, which is aimed at the diagnosed abnormal noise source under the corresponding working conditions and the diagnosed components, is proposed. A mobile charging system (MCS) for electric vehicles (EVs) is presented in this paper. The proposed MCS has a 2-MWh energy storage capacity for charging five EVs simultaneously with 75-kW individual charging rates. The MCS would be rechargeable from the available power substations (three phase, 480 V) with 375-kW charging rate. The appropriate modular power interface is designed and implemented between the MCS, batteries of the EVs, and the power substations. A switched reluctance motor (SRM) is one of the candidates of rare-earth-free motors for hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs). An SRM has been developed with same interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) dimensions having competitive maximum torque, operating area, and maximum efficiency. However, this SRM has a windage loss of 1.3 kW due to the salient poles of the SRM driven at the maximum rotational speed. In addition, considerable acoustic noise is caused by the salient poles. In this paper, a simple design of a cylindrical outer shape rotor is proposed, and a comparison with the conventional SRM rotor is carried out.
