This paper exploits smart inverters of distributed energy resources (DERs) for the mitigation of fault-induced delayed voltage recovery (FIDVR). According to the IEEE Standard 1547-2018, smart inverters with voltage ride-through and var injection capabilities are promising technologies for mitigating FIDVR. This paper quantitatively investigates the effectiveness of smart inverters for FIDVR from a system-wide perspective. It shows that the penetration of smart inverters and induction motors are important factors affecting mitigation success. In addition, the over-voltages at the end of FIDVR due to load disconnections can be prevented with coordinated control of DERs and automated switching capacitors. The control scheme of smart inverters used for FIDVR is extended from the distributed volt/var droop control to include low- and high-voltage ride-through capabilities. The IEEE 13-bus feeder, the 8500-node test feeder, and the IEEE 390-node low-voltage network test system are used to illustrate the impact of DER penetration. For example, one can determine the residential air conditioner penetration level (for a given system at certain DER penetration level) that makes a system susceptible to FIDVR. Voltage source inverters (VSIs) with vector control based on phase-locked loop (PLL) suffer instability when connecting to a very weak AC grid (short circuit ratio (SCR) $ < $ 1.3). The conventional inductive grid impedance compensation for the PLL by virtually reducing the grid impedance can stabilize this connection. However, the analysis in this paper indicates that its stabilization effectiveness is sensitive to grid impedance variance and, indeed, overcompensation causes the PLL instability. Therefore, in this paper, an improved grid impedance compensation for the PLL is proposed to achieve the same stabilization for very-weak-grid connection and possess a good tolerance of grid impedance variance and overcompensation. A comprehensive small-signal model of the VSI using the proposed PLL’s grid impedance compensation is derived for stability analysis and parameter design. The time-domain simulation for this VSI is built to validate the stability analysis. Comparison studies for both proposed and conventional PLL’s grid impedance compensation are conducted including the stability effectiveness, VSI performance and grid impedance variance. The goal of the paper is to develop a hybrid modulation technique to combine space vector modulation (SVM) scheme and synchronous optimal pulsewidth modulation (SOPWM) technique for current source inverter (CSI). SVM provides better dynamic performance, but is unable to produce less total harmonic distortion (THD) on inverter current at low device switching frequency ($< $ 1 kHz). SOPWM provides less THD even at low device switching frequency, however it needs a conversion technique to operate CSI and it needs an additional control technique to improve dynamic performance. Hence to overcome these limitations, this paper develops a single modulation technique called optimal SVM technique that can achieve less THD as well as better dynamic performance. To develop optimal SVM technique, three methods have been proposed in this paper. These three methods do not require an additional conversion technique to operate CSI and they provide less THD even under low device switching frequency of 450 Hz. Transformations between abc, stationary dq0 ($\alpha \beta 0$) and rotating dq0 reference-frames are used extensively in the analysis and control of three-phase technologies such as machines and inverters. Previous work on deriving the matrices describing these transformations follows one of two approaches. The first approach derives Clarke's matrix by modifying symmetrical components. Park's matrix can be subsequently found from a rotation matrix. The second approach derives Park's matrix using trigonometric projection by interpreting the transformation as a rotation in the plane of the cross-section of a machine. Then, Clarke's matrix can be found trivially using a reference angle of zero in Park's matrix. This paper presents a third approach to deriving the Clarke and Park transformation matrices: a geometric interpretation. The approach exploits properties of the linear transformation using the Cartesian representation. We introduce the locus diagram of a three-phase quantity and show how these diagrams have applications in power quality. While the initial aim of smart meters is to provide energy readings for billing purposes, the availability of these measurements could open new opportunities for the management of future distribution grids. This paper presents a multilevel state estimator that exploits the smart meter measurements for monitoring both low and medium voltage grids. The goal of this paper is to present an architecture that is able to efficiently integrate smart meter measurements and to show the accuracy performance achievable if the use of real-time smart meter measurements for state estimation purposes was enabled. The design of the state estimator applies the uncertainty propagation theory for the integration of the data at different hierarchical levels. The coordination of the estimation levels is realized through a cloud-based infrastructure, which also provides the interface to auxiliary functions and the access to the estimation results for other distribution grid management applications. A mathematical analysis is performed to characterize the estimation algorithm in terms of accuracy and to show the performance achievable at different levels of the distribution grid when using the smart meter data. Instability has been a major problem in finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) subgridding methods. Reciprocity has been proposed to overcome the problem but with limited success in producing a symmetric positive semidefinite (SPD) system without compromising accuracy. In this paper, we algebraically derive both 2- and 3-D FDTD subgridding operators, which are SPD by construction, and independent of the grid ratio. Such operators have only nonnegative real eigenvalues, and hence the stability of the resulting explicit time marching is guaranteed. The 3-D operator, the algorithm of which is also applicable to 2-D analysis, further permits the use of a local time step, thus achieving a natural subgridding in both space and time. In addition, the interpretation of the proposed operators in the original FDTD formulation is also provided. Interestingly, not only interface unknowns but also subgrid unknowns are generated in a different way, as compared to the original FDTD, to simultaneously obtain an SPD system and to ensure accuracy. Frequency-domain modeling is an effective technique in the dynamic analysis of power electronic converters-based power systems. In this paper, a unified single-input single-output (SISO) loop gain modeling for the three-phase grid-tied voltage source converters (VSCs) under both symmetric and asymmetric AC grids is presented, which facilitates the physical measurement and stability analysis. Based on the linear-time-periodic (LTP) modeling technique, the harmonic admittance model of the three-phase grid-tied VSC is developed in the stationary (αβ)-frame, which accurately captures the coupling dynamics. This model can be transformed into other existing models through coordinate transformations. According to the idea of mathematical induction, a two-by-two recursive admittance matrix (RAM) model is derived, which is easy to include frequency coupling components of arbitrary order. It is illustrated that the VSC admittance is coupled with the grid admittance due to the frequency coupling effect (FCE). Furthermore, the RAM is converted to its equivalent SISO models following the concept of loop gain. The system stability is thus assessed by the SISO stability criteria (e.g., Nyquist stability criterion). In addition, the loop gain allows the traditional SISO perturbation and measurement scheme to be used for detecting the stability margin information. Electric distribution grid operations typically rely on both centralized optimization and local non-optimal control techniques. As an alternative, distribution system operational practices can consider distributed optimization techniques that leverage communications among various neighboring agents to achieve optimal operation. With the rapidly increasing integration of distributed energy resources (DERs), distributed optimization algorithms are growing in importance due to their potential advantages in scalability, flexibility, privacy, and robustness relative to centralized optimization. Implementation of distributed optimization offers multiple challenges and also opportunities. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the recent advancements in distributed optimization for electric distribution systems and classifications using key attributes. Problem formulations and distributed optimization algorithms are provided for example use cases, including volt/var control, market clearing process, loss minimization, and conservation voltage reduction. The advancements in smart grid technologies had brought forth the prospect of self-healing distribution grid through intentional islanding, aided by the steadily rising penetration of inverter-based distributed generations (IBDGs). Adaptive protection is the key enabler for this resilient grid architecture. For cost-effectiveness, overcurrent relays (OCRs) with adaptive features had been proposed, often with the sensitivity problem due to low short-circuit current magnitude from the IBDG taken into consideration and largely addressed. However, apart from this widely discussed sensitivity problem, there is an underlying issue on selectivity of the OCR which is frequently disregarded when designing an adaptive overcurrent protection scheme for IBDG dominated microgrid. This selectivity problem is mainly caused by the current diversion to load during fault, which is often disregarded when performing OCR grading for a conventional grid. In this paper, this selectivity problem of the OCR is discussed in depth through a comparative study of conventional grid and a modern IBDG dominated grid. The coordination time interval margin violations problems are demonstrated through theoretical calculations and real-time hardware-in-the-loop experiments. This research aims to provide better insights into the selectivity problem as a step towards achieving a cost-effective yet reliable overcurrent-based adaptive protection for IBDG dominated microgrid. This paper proposes a novel hybrid AC/DC microgrid architecture incorporating a central energy storage system (ESS) for both the AC and the DC sub-grids. To ensure effective operation of the proposed hybrid AC/DC microgrid architecture, a coordinated control strategy between the central ESS and the inter-linking converter (ILC) is proposed in the paper. The proposed central ESS provides voltage and frequency control to the AC sub-grid by measuring voltage and frequency at the point of common coupling (PCC) of the AC sub-grid, while providing DC voltage support to the DC sub-grid by measuring DC sub-grid’s PCC voltage. Furthermore, per-unit frequency and the DC sub-grid PCC voltage are utilized to transfer power between the two sub-grids via the ILC. Therefore, two control strategies are coordinating with each other and maintain stable operation. The central ESS eliminates the use of multiple ILCs and complex control schemes for charge and discharge control to maintain same state of charge levels at each ESS. Weak grid scenarios and low-inertia systems are emerging issues in power systems, which could lead to voltage and frequency instabilities. Synchronous Condensers (SynCons) have recently drawn renewed attention as a promising solution to provide system strength and inertia support. Even though the exciter control of SynCons is a well-established technology, further developments are required to guarantee the stability of post-fault operations, in particular, in weak grids. This paper proposes a data-driven approach for designing higher-order optimized exciter controllers to meet this requirement. A pseudo-random binary sequence (PRBS)-based system identification method is used to obtain frequency response data of the power system, from the exciter point of view, which is then fed into the proposed optimal control design procedure. The proposed exciter controller is tested for voltage ride-through and fault scenarios in a single machine infinite bus (SMIB) case and the IEEE 39-bus test system to assess its performance compared to the conventional AC1A exciter controller. The results obtained through simulation tests carried out using the PSCAD/EMTDC software verify that the proposed exciter controller guarantees the post-fault stability in both strong and weak grids. Active damping is a common way to stabilize the current control of LCL-filtered converters. In this paper, the stable region of −180° phase crossing is first identified within a predefined range of grid impedance and LCL parameter variations. Once the phase of the current control loop is in the identified region, a stabilization control can be attained. Subsequently, digital filters can be adopted to achieve active damping by reshaping the open-loop phase. Various digital filters are selected and benchmarked in this paper. It is confirmed that the all-pass filter has a unity gain and adjustable lagging phase before the Nyquist frequency, thereby being a promising solution to the phase reshaping. Therefore, the all-pass filter is employed to move the phase of the open-loop control (i.e., −180° phase crossing) into the targeted region for active damping. Notably, the current controller and the all-pass filter-based active damping can be separately designed, indicating the easy implementation of the active damping. Experimental tests demonstrate that the proposed method can ensure the system stability over a wide range of parameter variations (e.g., grid impedance changes and LCL-filter parameter drifts) while maintaining fast dynamics with the grid-side current control. The grid-connection point of photovoltaic inverters may exhibit inductive characteristics (i.e., a weak grid) due to long transmission cables as well as multiple transformers. A large grid impedance can arouse impedance-based stability problems, sustained resonances and impose power-delivery limits. This paper discusses an impedance-compensated synchronous reference- frame-PLL-angle-correction method. The method presented in this paper compensates the PLL angle according to estimated or measured grid impedance in order to achieve improved performance in weak grids. Due to the lack of explicit small-signal impedance models around the aforementioned topic, this paper presents a complete small-signal transfer function model to analyze the impedance-based stability of the PLL-angle compensation method. 1.5 kV dc link voltage has been a trend for the solar industry. Moving from 1 to 1.5 kV dc voltage can increase string length, enhance inverter conversion ability, increase array block sizes, and improve performance. Multilevel converters are the natural choices while control becomes more complicated. If a simple two-level converter is adopted, the 1.7 kV device may not be applicable considering the voltage derating for certain failure rate. Therefore, devices with higher blocking voltage should be considered. This paper reports for the first time the performance characterization of a 2.5 kV silicon carbide (SiC) mosfet. In this paper, integrated operation management of cooperative microgrids is formulated in the framework of stochastic predictive control. In the proposed scheme, a joint probabilistic constraint on the microgrids power exchange with the main grid couples operation of individual microgrids. In order to tackle the coupling constraint, a cooperative energy management strategy is proposed in which based on the statistical characteristics of uncertain parameters, the deterministic counterpart of the problem is derived and an efficient solution strategy is achieved. The proposed strategy is evaluated for an illustrative test case including two microgrids based on modified CIGRE benchmark. Insulation condition monitoring is essential for the safety of our distribution power grid. However, the traditional monitoring solution is hardly applied due to the concerns that arise from natures of distribution grid, such as complex feeder networks, massive operation site, and high economic benefit. In this paper, a wireless sensing network based on Internet of things (IoT) technology is demonstrated for insulation condition perception. First of all, the general framework of the wireless sensing network is designed with considerations on extendibility and accessibility. Next, it goes into detail about the technical requirements of the essential units of the sensing network including sensor node, power management, and data communication. With this concept, two practical cases of IoT-based partial discharge sensing networks realized on the switchgear cabinet and power cable are presented with details involving the design of transient earth voltage and high frequency current sensor nodes, the energy consumption, Lora/NB-IoT-based network structures, and data usage strategies. Multimicrogrid (MMG) systems have the potential to play an increasingly important role in the transformation of existing power grid to smart grid. However, the open and distributed connectivity of MMGs exposes the systems into various cyber-attacks, which may cause serious failures or physical damages, such as power supply interruption and human casualties. Therefore, ensuring the security of MMGs is of paramount importance. To address this issue, a new collaborative intrusion detection (CID) approach using blockchain is proposed in this paper for MMG systems in smart grid. Due to the consensus mechanism of blockchain, the approach is designed without the need of a trusted authority or central server while improving the accuracy of intrusion detection in a collaborative way. It is equipped with a proposal generation method that combines periodic and trigger patterns to generate the detection target of CID, i.e., a proposal. From the generated proposals together with the correlation model of MMGs, a CID is achieved by using the consensus mechanism. The final detection results of CID are stored on blockchain in sequence. The use of an incentive mechanism motivates a single microgrid to participate in consensus. The effectiveness of the presented approach is demonstrated through a case study on an MMG system. This paper shows that existing delay-based testing techniques for power gating exhibit both fault coverage and yield loss due to deviations at the charging delay introduced by the distributed nature of the power-distribution-networks (PDNs). To restore this test quality (TQ) loss, which could reach up to 67.7% of false passes and 25% of false fails due to stuck-open faults, we propose a design-for-testability logic that accounts for a distributed PDN. The proposed logic is optimized by an algorithm that also handles uncertainty due to process variations and offers tradeoff flexibility between test application time and area cost. A calibration process is proposed to bridge model-to-hardware discrepancies and increase TQ when considering systematic variations. Through SPICE simulations, we show complete recovery of the TQ lost due to PDNs. The proposed method is robust, sustaining 80.3%–98.6% of the achieved TQ under high random and systematic process variations. This paper investigates the modal repulsion happened in the sub-synchronous resonance between a synchronous generator and series-compensated transmission line. The investigation is based on the closed-loop model of the series-compensated power system consisted of the torsional and electrical open-loop subsystems. Analytical explanation is presented to show how the SSO modal repulsion is formed as the result of moving close and apart between two open-loop SSO modes. Analysis is carried out to indicate that the peak of the SSO modal repulsion occurs when the two open-loop SSO modes from the torsional and electrical subsystem are closest to each other on the complex plane, which is referred to as the open-loop modal coupling. Estimation on the peak, i.e., the maximum damping degradation of the SSO modes, is derived in the paper. Subsequently, a method of open-loop modal analysis is proposed. Applications of the proposed method of open-loop modal analysis to study the SSOs caused by the DFIGs under the condition of the modal repulsion in the power system are demonstrated and evaluated by example power systems. Equivalent inertia of the power system is reducing with the increasing wind power penetration. To alleviate this issue, more and more countries have put forward grid codes that require wind farms (WFs) to provide inertial response as traditional synchronous generation does. It is found in this paper that the synthetic inertial control of the WF in a weak grid deteriorates drive-train torsional oscillation of wind turbine generators (WTGs). Furthermore, the WF emulating inertial response is involved in power system oscillations and induces a new critical low-frequency oscillation. The above oscillations threaten small-signal stability of the WF and the power system, which restricts the WF to fulfill grid code requirements. To overcome this problem, this paper proposes a two-level damping control scheme consisting of a WTG level torsional oscillation damping control and a WF level low-frequency oscillation adaptive damping control to enhance damping characteristic of the WF. Simulation results show that the two-level damping control can simultaneously counteract these concerned multiple oscillations under various operating conditions, which facilitates the WF to meet grid code requirements, and improves dynamic stability of the WF and the power system. In this paper, it is identified that unstable weak grid connection of voltage source inverters (VSIs) is dominantly caused by the current control. In particular, it is found the proportional gain $ k_p$ of conventional PI controller cannot balance the grid voltage impact and damping capability especially when a very weak grid with short circuit ratio (SCR) $ < $ 1.3 is connected. This issue is solved in this paper by simply restructuring the PI controller as an IP controller for current control. In order to realize the grid-friendly wind turbine system (WTS), applying of the virtual synchronous generator (VSG) control strategy to WTS has become a trend of research, and it is also required to analyze the grid-connected operation characteristics of the VSG controlled WTS. In this paper, the impedance modeling and impedance-based stability analysis of the VSG controlled type-IV WTS are carried out. Different from existing impedance modeling method that the WTS is modeled by a high dimensional impedance model with complex expressions, a model to describe the shaping effects of dc-link dynamics is proposed, and combined with the space vector diagram to analyze the system impedance characteristics. It is found that the impedance of the VSG controlled type-IV can be capacitive below the fundamental frequency, which is inherited from its GSC impedance and the capacitive characteristics has been weakened by the influence of dc-link dynamics. Instable risk has also been found between the VSG controlled type-IV WTS and the connected weak grid, and the instability can be avoided if the capacitive characteristics of the VSG controlled type-IV WTS are weakened by reshaping its GSC impedance or by enhancing the dc-link dynamics. In this paper, an enhanced fault-tolerant operation approach is developed to maintain continued operation of five-phase grid-tied current-source converters (CSCs) during one-phase supplying wire broken. First, the instantaneous power flow of this system is analyzed based on the sequence decomposition method. It is found that through proper arrangement of positive-, negative-, and pseudozero-sequence components of line current reference and compensation of filter CL current offset, the CSC system can achieve reduction of instantaneous active power fluctuation and minimization of line current magnitude at the same time. Accordingly, multiphase CSCs are able to operate with smaller dc rail current ripples and to obtain more active power transfer capability during fault tolerant operation. In addition, this paper also briefly discusses the control of multiphase systems in the case of complex grid faults with simultaneous wire broken and imbalanced grid voltage dips. It is found that an intentional constant reactive power injection can help to reduce the peak current of the five-phase grid-tied system. Furthermore, it should be noted that the proposed method is realized in a direct current modulation manner. Thus, a large number of line current acquisition devices for conventional multiphase grid-tied converters are removed. Finally, this paper also discusses the modulation method of five-phase CSC with one-phase wire broken. This paper analyzes the influence of phase-locked loop (PLL) on the stability of LCL-type single-phase grid-connected asymmetrical cascaded H-bridge multilevel inverter (ACHMI) with synchronous reference frame proportional-integral (SRF-PI) grid current control under weak grid scenarios. The ACHMI system is composed of power stage circuit and control system, where the control system contains the dual-loop current control strategy established in the hybrid reference frame, the SRF-PLL, and the hybrid modulation method employed to synthesize the multilevel output voltage. The small-signal model of the whole ACHMI system is first established by using a simple step-by-step derivation method, and then, the small-signal analysis method is adopted to linearize the ACHMI, which is then utilized to derive the impedance model of the ACHMI system. Furthermore, an improved impedance stability criterion is derived, which is then employed to analyze the system stability. By using this criterion, the stability of the ACHMI can be evaluated with the variation of the bandwidth of PLL, the output power factor angle of the ACHMI, and the amplitude of the grid current reference signal under weak grid conditions. In this paper, a systematic design procedure for the optimal selection of the PI controller of the PLL is presented, which guarantees the steady-state performance and dynamic response of the ACHMI system. With this design method, the dual-loop current control and PLL can be taken into account simultaneously when analyzing the stability margin of the ACHMI. Cyber-attack is recognized as an emerging risk in smart grids. In this paper, we reveal a potential link between data attack and physical consequences and analyzed how the attacker can launch a malicious data attack to trigger sequential outages and thus impose large damages to the grid. In this attack mechanism, the attacker constructs an optimal false data injection attack to intentionally trigger a targeted branch outage sequence that trips multiple branches and then leads to subsequent failures. The studied attack mechanism integrates constructing an optimal data attack and identifying critical lines, and imposes a substantial security impact with a high chance of occurring. A medium-voltage ac network is commonly used to interconnect wind turbines to the offshore substation, which can create significant power losses, as the distance between wind turbine and offshore substation can vary from 5 to 9 km. The copper-conductor-based high-voltage dc (HVDC) or high-voltage ac (HVAC) transmission lines are generally used to transmit the electrical power from the offshore substations to the onshore grids. With the recent advancement of the high-temperature superconducting (HTS) cables, it is now possible to replace the traditional HVAC/HVDC transmission lines with a medium-voltage dc (MVDC) cables. A new MVDC converter is proposed in this paper to convert the generator low ac output voltage to MVDC directly. The proposed new technology not only eliminates the requirement of low-frequency heavy and large step-up transformers and line filters, but can also eliminate the voltage conversion stages to allow the entire power transmission networks to use MVDC HTS cables. A compact, lightweight, and efficient high-frequency common magnetic link is used in the proposed converter. The magnetic link can inherently solve the isolation problem. Islanded grids operate isolated from the main grid and they allow the use of ac with a different frequency from the main grid. In this paper, it is proposed to use more than one frequency at the same time in such autonomous systems. The grid voltage amplitude at the fundamental frequency can be increased while the voltage peak is constant by adding odd harmonics to the voltage waveform. The grid currents and the power converter currents are decreased for the same power level, which leads to reduced losses in the system. The currents can be minimized if waveform shaping is additionally applied to the current waveforms. Load management is usually not considered in details during the planning stage due to its complexity and uncertainty in nature. However, this practice is changed in microgrids since the load composition in microgrids is more specific and manageable. In addition, the development of advanced metering infrastructure provides a more convenient mechanism for data collection and system control. This paper presents an integrated resources planning model based on optimal direct load control (DLC) (such as control of the air-conditioning load) in microgrids for load shifting and peak shaving to reduce/defer investments and minimize total social costs. This paper begins with the introduction of DLC and the models of the relevant distributed generation resources, including photovoltaic, wind turbines, diesel engines, and batteries. An algorithm is presented to combine the microgrid planning and DLC strategy. Optimal deployment, with respect to locations, capacity sizes, and types of distributed energy resources (DERs), which are the main components in a microgrid system, are chosen for study in this paper. For the selection of optimal locations of DERs, the loss sensitivity index of each bus is taken into account. Whereas optimal size and its separation among microturbines, diesel generators and combustion turbines at each bus location are performed on the basis of the maximum benefit-to-cost ratio of the microgrid owner, obtained by using the particle swarm optimization technique and with respect to their reliable catering and quality of power as well as heat (i.e., combined-heat-and-power (CHP) operation) for customers. This paper conducts four separate case studies--two on 6-bus systems (radial and meshed) and resting on 14-bus systems (the IEEE system and radial system)--to show how much these systems are economically feasible for investment planning when cost and CHP benefits of various types of DERs are taken into account. This paper analyzes the feasibility of optimally utilizing Ontario's grid potential for charging plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) during off-peak periods. Based an a simplified zonal model of Ontario's electricity-transmission network and a zonal pattern of base-load generation capacity from 2009 to 2025, an optimization model is developed to find the optimal, as well as maximum, penetrations of PHEVs into Ontario's transport sector. The results of this paper demonstrate that the present and projected electricity grid in Ontario can be optimally exploited for charging almost 6% of the total vehicles in Ontario or 12.5% of the vehicles in Toronto's transport sector by 2025; this corresponds to approximately 500 000 PHEVs that can be charged from the grid without any additional transmission or power-generation investments beyond those currently planned. The safe operation of grid-connected power converters during abnormal condition is a key issue in order to guarantee operation and to avoid undesired trips. In this paper, different control strategies for the operation of a D-STATCOM are introduced, where the reference currents are determined in such a way that not only will none of the phase currents go over the limits, but also the dc voltage fluctuations remain in safe operation limits. Fluctuating active power interchange during unbalanced condition leads to dc voltage oscillation. Severe unbalanced condition and small dc capacitor selection (to meet the size and cost constraints) intensify the dc voltage oscillation. Therefore, the contribution of this paper relies on the combination of the dc voltage oscillations and the current limit control. The effectiveness of three proposed control strategies is verified by simulating a D-STATCOM tied to an industrial distribution network. The stability of the grid-connected inverters adopted in distributed energy resources (DERs) highly depends on the characteristics of the grid impedance. Hence, various active damping methods and adaptive control algorithms have been proposed for the control of the grid inverters. Differently from those existing solutions, this paper proposes to use a smart transformer (ST) to shape the grid impedance to interact with the controllers of local inverters, aiming at improving the stability of the local controllers as well as the overall grid. A main advantage of this solution is that it offers a pervasive service to all the available DERs, reducing the cost and design effort of the local controllers. Three active damping methods are presented in this paper and the implementation issues in the ST LV-side voltage controller are given. The evolution of power distribution grids from passive to active systems creates reliability and efficiency challenges to the distribution system operators. In this paper, an energy management and control scheme for managing the operation of an active distribution grid with prosumers is proposed. A multi-objective optimization model to minimize (i) the prosumers electricity cost and (ii) the cost of the grid energy losses, while guaranteeing safe and reliable grid operation is formulated. This is done by determining the active and reactive power set-points of the photovoltaic and storage systems integrated in the grid buildings. The resulting optimization model is non-convex, thus a convex second-order cone program is developed by appropriately relaxing the non-convex constraints which yields optimal results in most operating conditions. The convexified model is further utilized to develop an algorithm that yields feasible solutions to the non-convex problem under any operating conditions. Moreover, a second novel algorithm to find the operating point that provides fairness between the prosumers and the grid costs is proposed. The high-frequency magnetic linked solid-state transformer (SST) has the tremendous potential to solve the issues related to interfacing the grid with renewable energy sources and the non-linear loads as well as to provide the additional control functionalities. Several H-bridges are usually connected in series for the medium voltage grid integration of the SST. The number of the dual active bridge modules and the number of high-frequency magnetic links (HFMLs) usually increase with the increase of the number of series connected H-bridges. This increases the possibility of parameter mismatches and system instability. Therefore, the multiple-active bridge (MAB) dc-dc converter concept has been proposed for next generation SST, where multiple H-bridges share the same HFML. This configuration reduces the number of HFML and increases the cross-coupling power transfer capability. However, the design process of the MAB converter involves a multi-physics research in the field of power electronics, magnetics, switching, control, and energy management. In this paper, the detailed analytical modelling and the control technique of the silicon carbide (SiC)-based MAB converter are investigated. The small and large signal average models of the converter are developed and a voltage balance controller is designed for the better understanding of the controller characteristics. The effect of connecting several H-bridges to a single HFML is investigated in detail. Moreover, to reduce the switching loss, the converter topology adopts the SiC-based switching devices instead of the traditional silicon (Si)-based devices and the nanocrystalline magnetic material is used for the HFML design due to its low specific core loss. This paper proposes a symmetrical phase-locked loop (PLL) that can eliminate the frequency-coupling terms caused by the asymmetric dynamics of conventional PLLs. In the approach, a concept of complex phase angle vector with both real and imaginary phase components is introduced, which enables to control the direct- and quadrature-axis components with symmetrical dynamics. The small-signal impedance model that characterizes the dynamic effect of the symmetrical PLL on the current control loop is also derived, which, differing from the conventional multiple-input multiple-output impedance matrix, is in a single-input single-output (SISO) form based on complex transfer functions. This SISO representation allows for a design-oriented analysis. Moreover, the undesired sub-synchronous oscillation caused by the conventional asymmetrical PLL can be avoided, and the classical SISO impedance shaping can be utilized to cancel the negative resistor behavior caused by PLL; thus can greatly enhance the grid synchronization stability under weak grid conditions. Recently, wind power technology has been developed rapidly. The interaction between the wind turbine generator and the grid may cause the stability issue and threats the reliable operation of the power system. So, it is vital to analyze the stability of the wind power grid-connected system. Due to the fluctuation of wind speed, the operation characteristics of the system vary, and the system exhibits different stability characteristics at the varied operating points. Thus, it is important to analyze the system stability in the entire operation space. The impedance-based analysis is an effective tool for the stability analysis of the grid-connected system. However, it is difficult to apply the conventional impedance/admittance model to characterize the system performance due to the fact that the system operating point often varies continually. To overcome this challenge, this paper proposes a two-variable admittance model that incorporates the wind speed into the conventional admittance model. In addition, a new stability criterion based on the magnitude and phase contour plot is developed to enable the stability analysis. Pulsed power loads (PPLs) are becoming prevalent in medium-voltage naval dc micro-grids. To alleviate their effects on the system, energy storages are commonly installed. For optimal performance, their interface converters need to have fast dynamics and excellent disturbance rejection capability. Moreover, these converters often need to have voltage transformation and galvanic isolation capability since common energy storage technologies such as batteries and supercaps are typically assembled with low-voltage strings. In order to address these issues, a moving discretized control set model predictive control (MDCS-MPC) is proposed in this paper and applied on a dual-active-bridge converter. Fixed switching frequency is maintained, enabling easy passive components design. The proposed MDCS-MPC has a reduced prediction horizon, which allows low computational burden. The operating principle of the MDCS-MPC is introduced in the development of a cost function, which provides stiff voltage regulation. Resonance damping and sampling noise resistance can also be achieved with the proposed cost function. An adaptive step is introduced to enable a fast transition. Assessments on the performance of the proposed MDCS-MPC are conducted. Comparisons with other control methods are also provided. Recent works have addressed the ancillary services provided by multifunctional photovoltaic inverters. This concept is based on the addition of extra functions to the conventional photovoltaic systems, such as harmonic current compensation of nonlinear loads and reactive power support. However, it is important to ensure that photovoltaic inverters work below the rated current peak. Therefore, this paper proposes two current dynamic saturation techniques to limit the current peak of multifunctional photovoltaic inverters during harmonic current compensation of nonlinear loads. One technique is based on a closed loop and other on an open loop. With this approach, the photovoltaic inverters are able to perform partial harmonic current compensation, i.e., it will only be allowed to compensate harmonic currents within their maximum current capacity. Mathematical models are developed to determine the parameters of the techniques. Comparisons in simulation and experimental environments show that both techniques provide improvements in the grid power quality at the same time as the inverter rated current capacity is respected. AC current regulators are susceptible to controller windup, i.e., the condition in which the controller dynamic states ramp the controller output up to very large values when the commanded reference cannot be achieved because of inverter saturation. Recovering from saturation can take considerable time once the linear mode has been restored, which degrades the current regulator's transient performance and can also impact on its stability. This paper proposes an improved formulation using the concept of signal conditioning, where windup is avoided by feeding the controller states entirely from the constrained inverter pulsewidth modulation command. Unlike previous approaches, this technique has the benefit of a simplified realization, since the controller transfer functions do not require algebraic reformulation. This makes it particularly suitable for multiple cascaded resonators used in harmonic compensation systems. Multilevel inverters (MLIs) are being used in wide range of power electronic applications. This paper presents a unified physics-based insulated-gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) compact model for circuit simulation that predicts the performance of both Si and SiC, n- and p-channel devices. The model can predict the detailed switching waveforms of these technologies based on its charge-based formulation. Further, this compact IGBT model is presented alongside a unique datasheet-driven parameter extraction process. The parameter extraction process enables users to quickly extract model parameters from data typically published without the need of taking physical measurements. The model has been validated with both Si and SiC devices for static and dynamic characteristics. The SiC IGBTs used for validation are a 12.5-kV n-channel device and a 13-kV p-channel device, while the Si IGBT chosen was IXDH30N120 from IXYS Corp. (Milpitas, CA, USA). This is the only IGBT model that predicts the performance of both n- and p-channel, Si and SiC devices, providing more freedom for the development of complex power electronics circuit designs. The convergence of the model has been verified by implementing a complex circuit consisting of both a dc–dc converter and a dc–ac inverter. The results presented here show that the unified model can be used to describe the behavior of a wide range of Si and SiC IGBT circuits. A gate driving for power devices is a key technology to further improve switching characteristics. With the help of digital gate driver IC, the switching behavior of power devices can be enhanced even under high-speed switching. In this paper, an evaluation platform for determining the optimal switching pattern of an active gate drive control is proposed for an inverter circuit. A high speed optimization system is built up to search for an advantageous switching pattern that reduces total switching loss of two power devices in an inverter circuit and constrains surge voltage simultaneously. The proposed online optimization demonstrates its feasibility for the full-bridge inverter circuit, which is rated at 500 V with digital active gate drive control. Experimental results show that the proposed optimization system is able to obtain optimal switching pattern from $64^{60}$ possible combinations of switching patterns within 15 min, which is 6 times faster than the previous study. Optimizations can also conducted under different load current conditions. Eventually, the obtained optimal pattern yields up to 42% reduction in the total switching loss when it constrains surge voltage to minimum compared with the conventional driving pattern. This paper proposes a peer-to-peer energy market platform based on the new concept of multiclass energy management, to coordinate trading between prosumers with heterogeneous (i.e., beyond purely financial) preferences. Power networks are undergoing a fundamental transition, with traditionally passive distribution network consumers becoming “prosumers”; proactive consumers that actively manage their production and consumption of energy. The paper introduces the new concept of energy classes, allowing energy to be treated as a heterogeneous product, based on attributes of its source, which are perceived by prosumers to have value. Examples include generation technology, location in the network and owner's reputation. The proposed peer-to-peer energy market platform coordinates trading between subscribed prosumers and the wholesale electricity market, to minimize costs associated with losses and battery depreciation, while providing added value by accounting for the prosumers’ individual preferences for the source/destination of the energy they consume/produce. The decomposable structure of the multiclass energy management problem is exploited to devise a distributed price-directed optimization mechanism, providing scalability and prosumer data privacy. The power grid is rapidly transforming, and while recent grid innovations increased the utilization of advanced control methods, the next-generation grid demands technologies that enable the integration of distributed energy resources (DERs)—and consumers that both seamlessly buy and sell electricity. This paper develops an optimization model and blockchain-based architecture to manage the operation of crowdsourced energy systems (CESs), with peer-to-peer (P2P) energy trading transactions (ETTs). An operational model of CESs in distribution networks is presented considering various types of ETT and crowdsourcees. Then, a two-phase operation algorithm is presented: Phase I focuses on the day-ahead scheduling of generation and controllable DERs, whereas Phase II is developed for hour-ahead or real-time operation of distribution networks. The developed approach supports seamless P2P energy trading between individual prosumers and/or the utility. The presented operational model can also be used to operate islanded microgrids. The CES framework and the operation algorithm are then prototyped through an efficient blockchain implementation, namely, the IBM Hyperledger Fabric. In this paper, a model predictive scheme is proposed to control the grid-connected high-power four-level diode-clamped inverter. To predict the future behavior of active and reactive grid power values and dc link capacitor voltages, a discrete-time model of the inverter is developed in synchronous reference frame. The controller uses all the possible switching states of the inverter for the prediction and evaluates them using a cost function. The switching state, which minimizes the cost function, is then chosen and applied at the next sampling interval. The switching frequency minimization is also achieved by including an extra constraint in the cost function. A simplified extrapolation method with reduced computational burden is proposed to safeguard the semiconductor devices during the dynamic changes in reference power values. The performance of the proposed method is investigated with the perturbations in the grid filter and dc link parameters. This paper investigates the suitability of selective harmonic elimination (SHE) for low-loss multimegawatt grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) inverters. The proposed system is able to meet utilities regulations, IEEE and IEC standards. In an attempt to substantiate the potential superiority of SHE over carrier-based or space-vector pulsewidth modulation (PWM), this paper demonstrates that SHE may allow grid-connected PV inverters to be controlled using a switching frequency of less than 1 kHz, while the inverter is still able to provide necessary operation features such as independent control of active and reactive powers and operation control simplicity. For system validation, experimental results with SHE are compared to the case when the inverter is controlled using third-harmonic injection PWM, with a 2-kHz switching frequency. Furthermore, the paper proposes a new implementation technique for SHE that utilizes the third harmonics to spread the switching angles over 90° instead of being located in a narrow range as generated when using conventional techniques, along with increases in modulation index. The advantages of the proposed technique include simplicity in implementation and flexibility in PWM waveforms. A significant amount of green power is being installed at the distribution level through the installation of green power generation facilities in the U.S. and Canada. This paper discusses green-power-generating sources (of 10 MW or less), which are connected to the utility system at the distribution level, and their impact on the distribution system. This paper also discusses the impact of smart grid and whether this new technology can solve some of the issues raised in this paper. Distribution circuits are designed to supply radial loads. Therefore, the introduction of green generation could mean redistribution of fault and load currents on the feeder circuit, overvoltage, and ferroresonance, plus a possible loss of protection system coordination—all of which can result in customer outages. This paper presents an improved finite-reluctance approach (IFRA) based on the simple synergy between reluctance network and complementary distributed magnetomotive forces (MMFs). In the IFRA, special attention is paid on the distributions of MMFs in the stator slots. Additional vertical MMFs are introduced to the local flux loop. The effects of the MMFs distribution are investigated. The comparison results among IFRA, finite-reluctance approach (FRA), and finite-element method (FEM) validate its accuracy both under linear and nonlinear conditions. Expansion of high-voltage dc (HVdc) systems to multi-terminal HVdc (MT-HVdc) systems/grids considerably increases the short-circuit levels. In order to protect the emerging MT-HVdc systems/grids against fault currents, proper dc fault current limiters (FCLs) must be developed. This paper proposes an innovative high inductance solid-state dc-reactor-based FCL (HISS-DCRFCL) to be used in HVdc applications. In fact, during the HISS-DCRFCL normal operation, its inductance value is extremely low, and its value becomes considerably high during the fault period, which decreases the fault current amplitude. The proposed HISS-DCRFCL performance is analyzed by MATLAB/Simulink and the simulation results are verified and confirmed by laboratory experimental results using a scaled-down laboratory prototype setup.
