This paper discusses a novel methodology to increase the voltage droop compensation range in generalized solid-state bipolar high-voltage Marx modulators with one resonant stage. To maintain the modularity characteristic of bipolar Marx modulators, the imbedding of additional resonant stages is not straightforward. Nevertheless, this paper proposes to add a second resonant stage to the already existing resonant-type voltage droop compensation stage. This second stage increases the voltage droop compensation percentage of a generalized solid-state bipolar Marx generator. The compensation of the bipolar pulse voltage droop is now achieved by adding two auxiliary synchronous compensation resonant voltages, to the output capacitive decaying voltage. Simulation and experimental results are presented for six Marx plus two resonant stages, 16% voltage droop, with 3-kV pulse amplitude, 100- $\mu \text{s}$ pulsewidth, 40-ms relaxation time, and 10-Hz pulse repetition rate. This paper describes a high-frequency pulsed-power generator for various industrial applications such as water treatment, food and medical apparatus for sterilization, or polluted gas treatment. The system is made of silicon-controlled rectifier as a main trigger switch, capacitors, two-stage magnetic pulse compression stages, and a linear transformer to generate a maximum of 120-kV, 5-kA pulse. The parameters obtained through the development are: output voltage: 120 kV (maximum), pulse repetition ration: 300 pulse per second, pulsewidth: 0.25~\mu \texts , and mean power: 30 kW. The designed pulsed-power generator is confirmed to be used effectively for many high-voltage pulsed-power applications related to environmental industry by simulation and experiments. This paper shows how to use modular Marx multilevel converter diode ( \textM^3 CD) modules to apply unipolar or bipolar high-voltage pulses for pulsed power applications. The \textM^3 CD cells allow the assembly of a multilevel converter without needing complex algorithms and parameter measurement to balance the capacitor voltages. This paper also explains how to supply all the modular cells in order to ensure galvanic isolation between control circuits and power circuits. Our understanding of warm dense matter (WDM) properties will help to unravel the formation and evolution of giant planet, including gaseous giants or mega-Earths. However, the production of WDM in the laboratory is limited to samples on the order of tens of micrometers. This raises many challenges to measure the properties of WDM using standard diagnostics. In this paper, we propose a new method to produce WDM samples using pulsed-power machines. We numerically demonstrate that the early expansion phase of the sample, usually encountered in pulsed-power systems, can be virtually eliminated using a current switching scheme. To avoid mixing the plasma and WDM states, the present strategy uses a gas-puff $Z$ -pinch as a closing plasma switch. During the first part of the discharge, most of the current flows inside a gas-puff $Z$ -pinch, preventing the heating of the sample. During this phase, the gas $Z$ -pinch radially converges toward the sample. When the $Z$ -pinch finally reaches the sample, all the $Z$ -pinch current switches to the sample and rapidly heats it. The strong azimuthal field generated by the $Z$ -pinch prevents the expansion of the sample. If the initial gas pressure is carefully chosen, the sample reaches a quasi-homogeneous WDM state. Recently, the pulsed power systems have found wide applications. For this reason, using the pulsed power generators that in addition to responding to the needs of the user, are providing the advantages of compactness, high flexibility, high repetition rate and cost efficiency is inevitable. This paper proposes a converter which is a combination of Marx topologies and solid state voltage multipliers. It is capable of producing high voltage pulses with varying amplitudes at different frequencies where is modular and flexible. The resonant circuit used in this structure can reduce the stress on switching element and increase the output voltage while providing a zero current switching for the full bridge converter. Its analytical design is described and its verification is proved by the simulation results in MATLAB\SIMULINK. This paper addresses inductive pulsed power generators and their major components. Different inductive storage designs, such as solenoids, toroids, and force-balanced coils, are briefly presented and their advantages and disadvantages are mentioned. Special emphasis is given to inductive circuit topologies, which have been investigated in railgun research, such as the XRAM, meat grinder, or pulse transformer topologies. One section deals with opening switches as they are indispensable for inductive storages and another one deals briefly with superconducting magnetic energy storage for pulsed power applications. Starting from the updated requirements of an advanced laser system, a switch–trigger system for a 2.0-MJ pulsed power supply (PPS) module is developed. This paper discusses the design, construction, and testing of this switch–trigger system. The two-electrode construction for the spark gap switch is selected because of its superiority in terms of long working life, high peak currents, and fast rise time of currents. The trigger generator based on resonant charging of a pulse transformer is constructed. A magnetic isolator and a pressure controller are the auxiliary equipment of this system. In the section based on mathematical principles, the equations of the lifetime and stability of this spark gap switch with graphite electrodes are given. These expressions can be regarded as the design basis of the same type of switch. As for the trigger generator, the analysis states that an appropriate ratio can be obtained when using the resonant charging based on a core-type pulse transformer. The charging time is dependent on the leakage inductance and the capacitance of the primary and secondary capacitors. Extensive testing proves the operating parameters of the switches and the trigger generator. The measured discharge current waveform of the 2.0-MJ capacitive PPS module is demonstrated to be over 500 kA peak current and 500 \mus pulse width. The life test proves that the switch–trigger system can support more than 200 kC transfer charge. By replacing the electrodes, the lifetime of this switch can be extended furthrer. Normally, a three-electrode spark–gap switch is controlled by the application of an external trigger impulse. In this paper, a novel self-breakdown sharpening switch based on the three-electrode spark–gap switch is proposed. However, in this paper, the trigger electrode is connected to ground through a resistor, with the prespark between the trigger and the main electrodes providing the electrons and ions that initiate conduction of the main gap. A prototype sharpening switch with a breakdown voltage of 116.0 kV \pm 1.0 kV and a breakdown time of 3.396\ \mu\s\pm 0.036 \ \mu\s is described. When compared with a conventional two-electrode spark–gap sharpening switch, the novel sharpening switch has both a more stable breakdown voltage and lower jitter, and the dc breakdown and impulse breakdown characteristics of the two types of switches are presented and compared. When the impedance of the resistor connected to the trigger electrode is high, it is demonstrated that both the value of this resistor and also the type of load have little effect on the characteristics of the novel switch. However, the breakdown voltage of the novel sharpening switch was found to be sensitive to the rise time of the input pulse from the trigger generator. In power system operation, network topology optimization (NTO) based on bus-branch model and opening/closing transmission lines has been previously proposed and utilized as a congestion mitigating tool to reduce operation cost. The bus-branch model cannot provide a detailed picture of all substation switching actions (e.g., bus splitting) that are well known to operators. In this paper, an NTO model based on substation and node-breaker modeling is presented to relieve congestion and consequently reduce cost. The substation reconfiguration provides a practical and realistic picture of switching actions, while having a higher flexibility in switching actions. However, due to introducing more number of nodes and binary variables associated with breakers, solving an NTO model would be challenging. Therefore, some tightening bounds are presented to maintain the reliability and accelerate the computations. Furthermore, using sensitivity analysis of substations, a method to cluster the network to congestion zones is then employed to determine suitable candidate substations for reconfiguration, thus significantly reducing the number of binary variables associated with breaker switchings. The results of applying the NTO model to the IEEE 118-bus test system demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method to remove congestion, while utilizing less number of switching actions compared to bus-branch switching. The subsynchronous resonance (SSR) problem may become more serious with the continuous evolvement of a series-compensated power system. Consequently, the existing SSR mitigation scheme might no longer keep the system stable. This issue has been encountered by Shangdu Power Plant, where the deployed supplementary excitation damping controllers (SEDCs) that well stabilized the system before cannot maintain torsional stability after the recent change occurred in the power system. Therefore, a combined mitigation scheme of SEDC and generator terminal subsynchronous damping controller (GTSDC) is proposed in this paper to regain system stability. SEDC provides electrical damping by modulating the excitation voltage at the rotor side. Meanwhile, GTSDC can damp SSR via injecting super-synchronous and subsynchronous currents into the generator stator. Field tests have proven the effectiveness of this combined scheme in addressing the deteriorated SSR issue. Eigenvalue analysis indicates that the combined scheme can provide enough positive damping for the system under any operating condition. Thanks to the low investment of SEDC and the flexibility of GTSDC, this combined scheme provides an economical and scalable solution for SSR mitigation, especially when the target system changes constantly. Many approaches exist for energy storage and delivery to the load, including high-power relativistic applications. One of the best solutions for the driver of high-power relativistic applications is the Marx generator. This paper describes the design, fabrication, and experimental validation of a Marx generator consisting of capacitors, spark-gap switches, and resistors. It is designed as an eight-stage Marx circuit to reach an output voltage level as low as −500 kV, and it is directly connected to the Blumlein pulse-forming line (PFL) to achieve more than 100 ns of the full-width at half-maximum. Experiments are performed with a solution load in a manner similar to having a coaxial structure in a high vacuum with a pressure of below 0.5\, \times \, 10^-5 torr, to prevent breakdown and measure the amplitude of the negative high-voltage pulse waveform. The solution load is designed to capture the short-pulse output of the PFL with a rise time of less than 25 ns and a voltage level of approximately −500 kV. The experimental results show that the output pulse can be used as a source to generate an intense relativistic electron beam at the gun for high-power relativistic applications. High-performance trigger generators with high amplitude, fast rise time, low jitter are essential for large-scaled pulsed-power systems. Most of the trigger generators are also tiny multistage pulsed-power systems with complicated structures. In this paper, a high-performance trigger generator was proposed by combining the advantages of low-jitter semiconductor switch and high-power gas switch. An avalanche transistor Marx circuit was developed. It was used to trigger a two-stage Marx generator based on trigatron switch. The output characteristics of the Marx circuit based on avalanche transistors and the two-stage Marx generator were studied. The experimental results show that a subnanosecond jitter, nanosecond rise time, high-voltage trigger generator can be achieved by triggering trigatron switch with an avalanche transistor circuit. Two-electrode graphite spark gap switch (TGSGS) is used as the main discharge switch and triggered by a reliable trigger generator in pulsed power conditioning system (PPCS). There would be 108 energy modules in PPCS working at the same time. The reliable operating and jitters of the trigger generators will have impact on the PPCSs performance. In this paper, the working modes of the TGSGS are discussed and the performance of trigger generators in PPCS is tested and presented. A protection strategy of the trigger generator in PPCS is introduced, and effect of the blocking capacitor on the trigger pulse transmission is analyzed and tested. The protection strategy of the trigger generator based on blocking capacitor and fuse can effectively prevent the energy anti-irrigation failure when the pulse transformer core saturated. The blocking capacitor has some effect on the trigger pulse transmission, and has the larger capacitance, getting the higher peak amplitude on the cathode of the TGSGS. It is tried to discuss the working characteristics of the thyristors, and proposes a selection reference of the thyristors in this and other similar applications. A repetitive 0.6 MV, 10 GW Tesla-driven Blumlein pulsed power generator, with an overall energy efficiency in excess of 90%, has been designed, manufactured and demonstrated by the Pulsed Power Group at Loughborough University. This paper describes the application of various numerical techniques used to design a successful generator, such as filamentary modeling and electrostatic and transient circuit analysis. All the major parameters of both the Tesla transformer and the Blumlein pulse-forming line were determined, enabling accurate modeling of the overall unit to be performed. The wide-bandwidth embedded sensors used to monitor the dynamic characteristics of the overall system are also presented. Experimental results obtained during this major experimental program are compared with theoretical predictions and the way ahead toward generating faster output voltage impulses is considered. Utilization of power electronics converters in pulsed power applications introduced a new series of reliable, long life, and cost-effective pulse generators. However, these converters suffer from the limited power ratings of semiconductor switches, which necessitate introduction of a new family of modular topologies. This paper proposes a modular power electronics converter based on voltage multiplier as a high voltage pulsed power generator. This modular circuit is able to generate flexible high output voltage from low input voltage sources. In this paper, starting from the project requirements, a 1.2-MJ pulsed power supply (PPS) module for a high-power laser system has been developed. The main circuit of this module consists of a high energy density capacitor bank, a spark gap switch, a magnetic switch, a trigger generator, and a load subsystem. Due to the superiority in the stability and service life, the two-electrode construction for the spark gap switch, high peak currents, and rise time of the currents is selected. Since a two-electrode spark gap switch has no separate trigger electrode and must be directly overvolted by the trigger generator, a small Marx generator has been designed and constructed for the advantage of the proven compactness and electrical performance. The effect of the magnetic switch represents a couple of functions. One is to block the triggering pulse produced by the Marx generator. Another is to permit the discharging current coming from the main capacitor bank. Finally, the measured discharge current waveform of the 1.2-MJ capacitive PPS module is demonstrated to be over a 300-kA peak current and a 500- \mu\s pulsewidth. This paper presents a power electronics converter to generate bipolar high-voltage pulses using low-voltage dc source. Converter is designed based on charging of different capacitors by a predetermined switching pattern and their discharging on the load for pulsed power applications. Low number of power electronics devices and bulky transformer elimination are main advantages of the proposed converter. According to new findings, bipolar high-voltage pulses may lead to higher efficiency in many applications, such as food sterilization industry. The electromagnetic radiation effect of high-voltage, subnanosecond pulsed electric fields attracts strong interest from researchers because of its significant development potential in biological treatments, particularly in noninvasive diagnosis and treatment. But up to now, high-voltage subnanosecond pulse generators are widely used for national defense and military, and they are difficult to implement successfully in the civil medical field. A compact, self-contained, repetitive frequency, high-voltage subnanosecond pulsed power source is proposed in this paper. It was designed, built, and tested successfully. Based on a four-stage, low-inductance Marx generator, the pulsed source produces subnanosecond rise-time pulses. A chopping switch was designed to cut off unformed signals and generate subnanosecond pulses. A measurement device, based on the principle of a capacitive voltage divider, was also constructed to determine both the amplitude and the rise-time of the pulse delivered by the source. Preliminary tests show that the source can produce repetitive frequency pulses with a peak value that exceeds 30 kV, as well as rise-time and pulse width (full wave at half maximum) within 1 ns under atmospheric pressure conditions. The pulse amplitude may be extended to hundreds of kilovolts by filling the switch system with an inert gas. The rise-time would be shortened as well. SPHINX is a microsecond linear transformer driver located at Atomic Energy Comission (CEA) Gramat (France), which can deliver a current pulse of 6 MA within 800 ns in a Z -pinch load. Using the concept of the dynamic load current multiplier (DLCM), which was proposed by Chuvatin, we expect to increase the load current above 6 MA, while decreasing its rise time to \sim300 ns. The DLCM developed by the CEA Gramat and International Technologies for High Pulsed Power (ITHPP) is a compact system made up of concentric electrodes (autotransformer), a dynamic flux extruder (cylindrical wire array), a vacuum convolute (eight post-hole rods), and a closing switch (compact vacuum surface switch). The latter is a key component of the system, which is used to prevent the current from flowing into the load until the inductance builds up due to the implosion of the wire array. This paper presents the design and testing of the DLCM surface switch, resulting from both electrostatic simulations and experiments on the SPHINX generator. These studies, carried out either with or without load (open circuit), were valuable for a first experimental evaluation of the DLCM scheme in a microsecond regime and provided detailed information on the surface switch behavior. A technology scheme that replaces Marx generator with Tesla transformer was put forward to improve the reliability of the pulsed power system. In order to validate the technology scheme, a Tesla transformer was designed and tested. The excitation of the primary consists of two 4- $\mu \text{F}$ polypropylene film capacitors which are separated by a three-electrode field distortion gas switch. A deionized water dielectric pulse forming line (PFL), with 13-nF equivalent capacitance, acts as the secondary capacitor. The actual transformation ratio is 9.7 approximately, and the PFL voltage is as high as 1.2 MV when two capacitors are charged to ±62 kV by the bipolar high-voltage direct current. The prefire probability of switch is described by the Weibull distribution and the working ratio of the switch is elaborately chosen so as to balance the prefire probability and the trigger jitter. For ±62 kV charge voltage and 0.2-MPa pressured air dielectric, the prefire probability of switch is only $1 \times 10^{-7}$ and the jitter of that is 5 ns. This paper presents a novel technique for the voltage droop compensation of long pulses in solid-state bipolar high-voltage Marx generators. Considering the modularity of Marx generators the compensation consists in adding one extra stage to perform as a pulsewidth modulation circuit. This stage voltage is added to the output positive or negative pulses, and an output LfCf filter is included to smooth the voltage pulse waveform. A five-stage laboratory prototype of this circuit has been assembled using 1200-V Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistors and diodes with 1000-V dc input voltage. The circuit was operated at 50-Hz bipolar pulse rate, giving 4-kV bipolar pulses, into a resistive load, with 100- \mu \texts pulsewidth and 9.5-ms relaxation time. To carry out cell experiments for the pulsed magnetic field treatment of tumor cells, a high dB/dt pulsed magnetic field generator based on a printed circuit board (PCB) Archimedes spiral coil and a self-breakdown air switch is developed. The magnetic field and the induced electric field around the Archimedes spiral coil are calculated. Using COMSOL Multiphysics software, the magnetic field distribution characteristics of the coil are optimally designed. Then, the performance of the generator is measured. Ultimately, the PCB Archimedean spiral coil has seven turns, and it has a diameter of 21 mm. The coil can produce the following pulse magnetic field parameters in a cell culture liquid: an amplitude of 0.92 T, a rise time of 78 ns, a pulsewidth of 1.8 \mu \text{s} , a rate of magnetic field change that reaches 1.1\times 10^{7} T/s, a maximum-induced electric field of 55.9 kV/m, a degree of electric field uniformity of 84%, and a maximum-induced current density of 1.7 \times 10^4 A/ \textm^2 . A two-electrode graphite spark gap switch is used as the main discharge switch and triggered by a reliable trigger generator in a pulsed-power conditioning system. The trigger generator based on resonant charging of a pulse transformer is constructed. An appropriate ratio can be obtained when using resonant charging based on a core-type pulse transformer. The charging time is dependent on the leakage inductance and the capacitance of the primary and secondary capacitors. The stray resistance and magnetizing inductance of the resonant charging circuit have an impact on ratio and energy transmission efficiency. A dry-type pulse transformer with a load of 1.08 nF, an output voltage of more than 130 kV, and a winding ratio of 65 is presented. A self-breakdown three-electrode output switch is used to shorten the rise time of the output impulse. The deviation of the self-breakdown voltage of the self-breakdown three-electrode output switch is much smaller than that of the self-breakdown two-electrode output switch. It assures that the trigger generator has a low jitter of output impulse when a lot of energy modules work simultaneously. The output impulse of the trigger generator with a peak value of more than 120 kV and a rise time of less than 30 ns can trigger the two-electrode graphite spark gap switch reliably. In this paper, a compact repetitive nanosecond pulsed power generator based on transmission line transformer (TLT) is developed for non-thermal plasma generation. The high voltage capacitor, the spark gap switch and the input side of the TLT are built into a compact structure to obtain a fast high-power pulse. The properly designed magnetic cores placed around the coaxial cables of the TLT have been chosen to obtain a higher voltage gain. The layout of TLT is optimized to make the generator more compact. A bipolar Blumlein former has been designed and successfully implemented as an extension to an existing 10-GW-Tesla-driven Blumlein pulsed power generator. The new system is capable of generating a voltage impulse with a peak-to-peak value reaching 650 kV and having a high-frequency limit of the bandwidth well in excess of 1 GHz. Constructional details are provided, together with experimental results and analysis using the 3-D software modeling of the bipolar former that provides the results in good agreement with experimental data. We present a rolling decision-making process for electrical power systems, in which unit commitment, dispatch and reserve policies are co-optimized in order to minimize expected short-run operating costs in the presence of uncertainty arising from demand and renewable infeeds. The uncertainty is assumed to be bounded, with estimated first and second moment statistics available. The rolling “look-ahead” process employs a planning horizon of several hours, with re-optimization taking place each time the first step has been implemented. We present an expected-cost formulation incorporating multi-stage recourse on continuous decision variables—plans for adjusting the dispatch in the light of future information to be discovered at each stage of the optimization horizon. The generic formulation allows the flexibility of devices such as energy storage units to be exploited in the reserve mechanism. We demonstrate using closed-loop numerical tests that significant reductions in the cost of accommodating uncertainty are attainable relative to a time-decoupled reserve mechanism. In contrast to previous results, we show that a time-coupled cost function is not required for this benefit to be observed. In addition, we show that relaxing binary unit commitment decisions after the first step of the horizon brings significant computational speed-ups, and in some cases also reduce closed-loop system operation costs. SPHINX is a microsecond linear transformer driver LTD, used essentially for implosion of Z-pinch loads in direct drive mode. It can deliver a 6-MA current pulse within 800 ns into a Z-pinch load. The dynamic load current multiplier concept enables the current pulse to be modified by increasing its amplitude while reducing its rise time before being delivered to the load. This compact system is made up of concentric electrodes (autotransformer), a dynamic flux extruder (cylindrical wire array), a vacuum convolute (eight postholes), and a vacuum closing switch, which is the key component of the system. Several different schemes are investigated for designing a vacuum switch suitable for operating the dynamic load current multiplier on the SPHINX generator for various applications, including isentropic compression experiments and Z-pinch radiation effects studies. In particular, the design of a compact vacuum surface switch and a multichannel vacuum switch, located upstream of the load are studied. A series of 1-D isentropic-compression experiments (ICE) has been initiated using the high-explosive pulsed-power (HEPP) system. Accurate high-stress isentropic equation-of-state (EOS) data had been reported using the HEPP-ICE system. A number of important advantages of the system were demonstrated, including higher stresses, higher accuracy, and larger sample sizes than those of other methods. Several potential design improvements have since been identified and tested. The storage inductor was eliminated, and the experiment was performed before the output of the plate flux compression generator could short-circuit itself. This eliminated the loss of current that occurs when the generator plates bounce apart. A new design of explosively formed fuse opening switch was employed with a multipoint initiation system that reduced the explosive mass, significantly reduced the timing jitter by eliminating air gaps, and minimized flux losses. In addition, with this new switch, the resistance-versus-time profile may be adjusted by controlling the initiation times of its four quadrants. Anomalous results were obtained with the new switch. A self-breakdown V/n gas switch, used in 1.25 Ω low impedance pulsed power generator, was designed and tested. The V/n switch consists of three electrodes: high voltage electrode, low voltage electrode and mid-plate electrode. Three electrodes form two gas plenums: one is main plenum, the other auxiliary plenum. The high electrode connects with four inner cylinders of four coaxial pulse forming lines in parallel. The low voltage electrode is attached to a matched pulse transmission line. A resonant inductance is used to reverse polarity of midplate electrode. When the gas pressures of two plenums were suitably set, the V/n switch could steadily work in multi-channel discharge mode, and the switch rise time was less than 30 ns. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
