This paper investigates a Vienna rectifier as a charger for series-connected battery packs. Focusing on carrier-based pulsewidth modulation (CBPWM), the ripple current flowing through the neutral point (NP) results in the voltage oscillation if the loads are resistive. To reduce the ripple of average NP current with mitigated distortion under balanced and unbalanced dc-link voltages conditions, a novel CBPWM with segmented component injection scheme (SCIS) is proposed in this paper. After dc component injection, continuous intervals for optimized component injection and clamping intervals for compensation component injection are identified. Optimized components are calculated originally based on unbalanced factor to make the average NP current zero-size in one switching period. Moreover, unique compensation components generate suitable NP current to shape the sinusoidal input currents according to the circuit analysis. In consequence, the SCIS not only keeps the input current with low-harmonic distortion, but also minimizes the oscillation of dc-link voltage under balanced and unbalanced conditions. In addition, the value of the NP current during the clamping intervals is analyzed under various operating conditions. This paper presents a neutral-point deviation and ripple compensating control method applied to a three-level neutral-point-clamped (NPC) converter. The neutral-point deviation and its harmonic components are analyzed with a focus on the average current flowing through the neutral-point of the dc link. This paper also proposes a control scheme compensating for the neutral-point deviation and dominant harmonic components under generalized unbalanced grid operating conditions. The positive and negative sequence components of the switching functions and ac input currents are employed to accurately explain the behavior of three-level NPC converter. The supply-side current of an inverter-fed induction motor (IM) is easily accessible and less affected by noises than the motor stator current. This paper proposes a novel sensorless speed estimation method for an IM using the spectrum of the supply-side current. However, due to the influence of fundamental supply frequency, it is difficult to carry out the speed detection straight from the supply-side current signal. In this paper, an analytic model for characterizing the supply-side current of an inverter-fed IM using the modulation theory and the switching function concept is developed. Then, the Hilbert transform is applied to extract the speed harmonic component from the supply-side current. Finally, an interpolated Goertzel algorithm is put forward to enhance the estimation precision of IM speed. The performance of the proposed sensorless speed estimation method is proved by the speed estimation results obtained from hardware experiments of an IM fed by an inverter under different load conditions. This paper presents Space Vector Modulation (SVM) sequences that reduce Common Mode Voltage (CMV) in Dual Three-phase Asymmetrical Induction Motor (DTAIM). At first, two existing SVM techniques such as Reference SVM (RSVM) and CMV1 are studied. Additionally, three new switching sequences are developed as CMV2, CMV3 and DCMV3, which reduce peak magnitude of CMV by 66.8% in comparison with RSVM technique. In SVM techniques, to obtain least CMV, zero vectors are usually replaced by two opposite large Active voltage Vectors (AV) with equal time duration. In such topologies like CMV1, total six AVs are utilized to synthesize the reference vector. The proposed SVM technique CMV2 utilizes only five large AVs to synthesize the reference vector and reduces CMV. Selection of five neighbouring AVs is reflected in reduction of harmonic flux trajectories and stator current ripple in proposed techniques. Additionally, two more switching sequences (CMV3 and DCMV3) are developed related to utilization of specific zero voltage vectors in all sectors (7 and 56) that produce zero CMV. These two switching sequences also provide easy implementation feature during the development of c-code program. In this study, CMV and stator current ripple are considered as performance parameters for different SVM techniques. The six-phase asymmetrical induction motors (SPIMs) are employed for high power medium voltage drive due to its attractive features of reduced stator copper loss, lower torque pulsation, higher torque per ampere, and higher reliability. In this paper, analysis of carrier-comparison-based pulse width modulation (PWM) techniques namely sinusoidal PWM and double zero-sequence injection PWM are carried out from a space vector perspective. Furthermore, new space vector pulsewidth modulation (SVPWM) techniques are developed by modifying the switching sequences of carrier-based PWM techniques. A comprehensive analysis of these PWM techniques is carried out in terms of harmonic flux trajectories, squared harmonic flux, and harmonic distortion factor (HDF). As a result, modified SVPWM technique namely 6ΦSVM3 is found superior to aforesaid PWM techniques, which significantly reduces HDF and provides lower current total harmonic distortion (THD). The experimental results of aforementioned PWM techniques are obtained and verified from six phase asymmetrical induction motor fed by dual two-level 3ΦVSIs. Induction motor drives operated with a low ratio of the switching frequency to the fundamental frequency (i.e., pulse number) are prone to have high magnitudes of low-order torque harmonics. This paper proposes a method to analytically evaluate the harmonic torque spectrum based on the pulsewidth-modulated voltage waveforms for low pulse number operation. The predicted torque harmonic spectra for different pulsewidth-modulated waveforms are validated through simulations and experiments. This paper also reports optimal switching angles to minimize the total rms value of torque harmonics of order 6, 12, 18 $,\dots,$ $6(N-1)$ , considering the number of switching angles per quarter ($N$) to be 4 and 5. Compared to sine triangle pulsewidth modulation and selective harmonic elimination pulsewidth modulation with the same pulse number, the proposed optimal switching angles significantly reduce the total rms value of all harmonic torques of order lower than $6N$. Extensive simulation and experimental results on a 3.7-kW induction motor drive are presented to demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed optimal pulsewidth modulation. This paper proposes a novel discontinuous pulse-width modulation (DPWM) method to reduce the current harmonics and improve the system efficiency for a single-phase three-level neutral-point clamped inverter. In single-phase inverters, the unipolar pulse-width modulation (UP-PWM) method is commonly used. However, this method has the disadvantage of power losses due to numerous switching operations. Conventional DPWM methods reduce the power losses and improve efficiency but increase the current total harmonic distortion (THD). To overcome these weaknesses, this paper proposes a hybrid DPWM switching method combining two PWM methods: the UP-PWM method and the conventional DPWM method called one-pole clamped PWM method. Since the proposed DPWM method offers all the advantages of both PWM methods, the optimal performance—with regard to the power losses and current THD—is obtained. The combination of two PWM methods is investigated by analyzing the power losses and current THD. Based on the analysis, the process determining the optimal operating condition is introduced. This paper presents a novel multilevel radio frequency (RF) pulsewidth modulation (PWM) method for all-digital transmitters (ADTx) that actively eliminates the selected harmonics of RF-PWM. Compared with existing multilevel RF-PWM techniques, this method uses several adaptive thresholds and controls the pulsewidth of the corresponding subpulses to make the selected harmonics cancel each other out and keep the fundamental frequency component proportional to input envelope. For the third-harmonic elimination, the corresponding five-level RF-PWM scheme presented in this paper shows that it can significantly relax the filtering requirements and improve the wideband performance of the ADTx. The proposed scheme is verified by extensive simulations and offline measurements. The simulations show good potential for high-frequency operation up to gigahertz ADTx. The measured results show that the third-harmonic suppression of the proposed scheme has increased with the decreasing of the time resolution for digital implementations. For a 3.80-dB peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) QPSK signal and a 6.04-dB PAPR 16QAM signal at 200-MHz carrier, the proposed scheme can achieve above −51- and −48-dBc third-harmonic suppression, respectively, when the time resolution is 50 ps and relative time resolution is 1%, and improves above 30 dBc to the existing schemes. High-frequency components of acoustic noise radiated by the electric powertrain make the subjective perception of electric vehicles worse than expected under certain operating conditions. In order to investigate the influence of acoustic components on sound quality, a pulse width modulation (PWM)-fed electric powertrain is studied in this paper. First, the acoustic noise of the electric powertrain is collected in a semianechoic chamber. Then, two types of acoustic components of the electric powertrain, namely harmonic order noise and switching noise, are distinguished through the analyses of supplied current from the inverter and gear vibration. Furthermore, the relationship between subjective perception and spectral characteristics of the noise is discussed, based on which sensitivity is established. Subsequently, the contributions of acoustic components to psychoacoustical parameters are determined. After that, a sound quality model of the acoustic noise radiated by the electric powertrain is established. The comparison between jury test and prediction shows that the established model can be used for sound quality evaluation of the electric powertrain. Finally, the influences of harmonic order noise and switching noise on subjective perception are discussed. Neutral-point-clamped (NPC) multilevel inverter fed high power drives operating at low switching frequency are prone to low-order torque pulsations. For a case of N switching angles per quarter, apart from maintaining the fundamental component, (N-1) voltage harmonics can be eliminated. Consequently, \fracN-12 or lower number of torque harmonics could be eliminated. This paper proposes an optimal pulse-width modulation (PWM), which minimizes the combined root mean square (RMS) value (\tau RMS ) of torque harmonics of order lower than $6N$ at any modulation index (M$) for an induction motor drive fed from an NPC three-level inverter. This paper considers cases of two, three, and four switching angles per quarter cycle of the pole voltage. This paper proposes an active switching harmonic current reduction method within the dc-link capacitor of two-level, three-phase, back-to-back converters. This method is based on the derived analytical solution for switching harmonic currents in the dc-link. It is shown that by controlling the pulse width modulation carrier waveform's phase angles, the harmonics in the second carrier band of the rectifier and the inverter can be synchronized such that cancellation occurs in the dc-link capacitor. This paper presents a new feed-forward strategy for suppressing low-order harmonic circulating currents in pulsewidth-modulated (PWM) based modular multilevel converters (MMCs). The approach is based on the new average model approach established in this paper, which identifies cross-coupling interactions between the system-level and submodule elements using decomposed dependent sources. As well as improving the damping of the system, the major advantage of this approach is that it maintains the natural DC bus balance property of a PWM modulated MMC by considering the upper and lower arms together (unlike existing feed-forward schemes which treat each MMC arm independently). Moreover, unlike existing direct control resonant strategies, which require careful gain tuning and are highly dependent on the ac system frequency, the proposed approach achieves wideband circulating current ripple suppression without requiring knowledge of the circulating current harmonic frequencies and needs only a simple proportional–integral (PI) controller to regulate the circulating current dc component for power balance. This makes it particularly suitable for use in multifrequency or variable-frequency ac systems. Extensive simulation and matching experimental results, including steady-state and transient responses compared against existing circulating current suppression approaches, validate the effectiveness and benefits of this new feed-forward compensation technique. The performance of modular multilevel converters (MMCs) in medium-voltage applications, where the number of required submodules is not high, can be improved utilizing low switching frequency modulations such as (2N+1) selective harmonic elimination-pulse width modulation (SHE-PWM), which provides tight control of lower order harmonics and low switching losses. This paper proposes a calculation method, which is based on a novel formulation, to solve the SHE-PWM problem. In particular, MMCs with (2N+1) phase output voltage levels are considered, obtaining a (2N+1) SHE-PWM waveform. This method utilizes a unique system of equations that is valid for any possible waveform. Therefore, it is able to calculate simultaneously, without predefined waveforms, both the switching patterns and the associated firing angles that solve the (2N+1) SHE-PWM problem. Consequently, the search process is simplified and optimized. Furthermore, this paper also proposes a circulating current control technique, which can be applied along with (2N+1) SHE-PWM without disturbing the phase output voltage. Simulation results and experimental tests obtained with a single-phase laboratory prototype prove the validity of the novel (2N+1) SHE-PWM implementation method and the proposed circulating current control technique. The selective harmonic current mitigation pulsewidth modulation (SHCM-PWM) technique can be used in cascaded multilevel converters to extend the harmonic reduction spectrum, reduce the coupling inductance and increase the efficiency. The offline SHCM-PWM technique has small number of switching transitions as its switching angles can only change once in a fundamental cycle and relatively long time delays because it uses FFT. As a result, its dynamic response has a lot to desire. As it will be proven in this paper, in four-quadrant power converters, to have a good transient dynamic response, both active and reactive power must be controlled at least two times in a fundamental cycle. In this paper, a hybrid modulation technique is introduced. The proposed technique uses SHCM-PWM under steady state and phase-shift PWM (PSPWM) under transient. In addition, in order to extend the modulation index range and ensure that SHCM-PWM can process four-quadrant active and reactive power, the constraints of the switching angles for the SHCM-PWM are modified. Wide bandgap semiconductor switches have been increasingly utilized to improve the power density and efficiency of power converters, as such devices are able to operate at very high frequencies, e.g., up to 100 MHz, with reduced power losses. However, such a high-frequency operation may impose a challenge to the digital control system, and the system clock frequency should be up to 100 GHz in high-precision applications, which is difficult to realize in low-cost microprocessors. Instead of using extremely high-frequency clocks, preprocessing-based solutions that utilize digital pulse-width-modulated (DPWM) dither techniques can also enhance the DPWM resolution with moderate frequency clocks. Unfortunately, this is usually achieved at the expense of introducing low-frequency harmonics, which may complicate system controller and output filter design. In this paper, an optimal dither technique is proposed to enhance the resolution of DPWM power converters. The concepts of positive dither and negative dither are first proposed in this paper. Furthermore, vector-diagram-based analysis indicates that with proper utilization of positive dithers and negative dithers and carefully selected dither sequences, the lowest order harmonic introduced by the conventional dither technique can be completely eliminated when the dither period is multiples of six switching periods. In other cases, the proposed optimal dither technique can produce minimized lowest order harmonic. This paper presents a novel approach to derive a pulsewidth modulation (PWM) technique for the generalized multi-phase drive. This novel approach is called a phase traversing principle. The given phase traversing principle is applied to the proposed PWM technique for five-phase open-end winding induction motor drive fed from a single dc source. The proposed PWM technique has the benefits of phase clamping, symmetrical operation of inverters, and common-mode current (CMC) elimination. Thus, it reduces the switching losses and also minimizes the issue of the CMC. The symmetrical operation of dual inverters further helps in the even distribution of losses. Also, the proposed PWM technique gives a good harmonic performance. The performance of the proposed PWM technique is analyzed using the switching loss function and harmonic flux trajectory methods. This paper proposes a new pulse amplitude width modulation (PAWM) procedure for cascaded H-bridge multilevel inverters fed by dc voltage sources with unequal amplitudes. With proposed procedure, the generated output voltage is obtained modulating a sinusoidal reference signal at the desired fundamental frequency with equally spaced switching angles. It has been analytically demonstrated that, under these assumptions, all harmonics except those of order $n=2kl\pm 1$ , $k=1,2,\ldots$ are deleted from the output voltage waveform. After a detailed description of the method and a comparative analysis with others existing in the literature, its harmonics elimination capability has been experimentally verified with 5-, 7-, 9-, and 11-level cascaded H-bridge inverters, moreover, it has been mathematically demonstrated that it reduces total harmonic distortion below 5% with a 17-level inverter and it is capable of eliminating the first 49 harmonics considered by standards with a 27-level inverter. In this paper, the zero sequence circulating current in open winding permanent magnet synchronous machine (OW-PMSM) drives with common dc bus is systematically analyzed for the first time. It is revealed that the zero sequence circulating current is affected by zero sequence back-electromotive force, cross coupling voltages in zero sequence from the machine side, pulse-width modulation induced zero sequence voltage, and inverter nonlinearity from the inverter side. Particularly, the influences from the cross coupling voltages in zero sequence and parasitic effect of inverter nonlinearity are investigated for the first time in this paper. Then, the synthetic model of the equivalent zero sequence circuit is proposed as well. Each cause is studied independently via analytical modeling, finite element analysis, and experiments. Meanwhile, to tackle this issue, the relevant suppression strategy using frequency adaptive proportional resonant controller is presented and tested on the 3 kW OW-PMSM platform. In this paper, the near-state pulsewidth modulation (NSPWM), adapted to be implemented in dual-voltage-source inverter (VSI) fed open-end motor, is proposed with the aim of mitigating low-order harmonics (which lead to current total harmonic distortion (THD) minimization). The following two proposed methods are studied in detail: 1) fixing phase angle displacement (PAD) between two VSIs to 120° while adjusting the modulation index (MI); and 2) fixing MI to the predetermined value (wherein low-order harmonics are highly mitigated) while adjusting PAD. Furthermore, the proposed approaches enhance efficiency by limiting the number of commutations within the switching interval. The paper also presents the mathematical approaches to accurately determine low-order harmonic components and switching losses for dual-VSI structure. The experimental setup, including dual-VSI and open-end induction motor, is assembled in the laboratory to evaluate performance of the proposed method. This paper proposed a novel hybrid random pulsewidth modulation (HRPWM) technique based on the modified space vector PWM for three-phase voltage source inverters to eliminate the PWM acoustic noise. Due to PWM technique and switching losses considerations, ear-piercing high-frequency noise from motor is common. The proposed HRPWM technique is able to remove the high-frequency unpleasant acoustic noise more effectively than the conventional RPWM with lower switching losses and shorter random frequency range. In addition, the PWM harmonics in phase voltage and phase current are reduced significantly. The HRPWM method is simple to implement and does not employ additional circuits in drive system. This paper presents a five-phase dual random space vector pulsewidth modulation (FPDR-SVPWM) strategy with an optimized probability density function (PDF) for a five-phase voltage-source inverter, and its performance and evaluation are also analyzed. Based on the nearest four vectors modulation method, the FPDR-SVPWM strategy, combined with random switching frequency and random zero vector, is investigated to significantly reduce the amplitude of high-order harmonics near the switching frequency and its integer multiples. For the nonsinusoidal power supply, third harmonic injection is introduced in this modulation strategy as well. Considering the effect of random numbers on the performance, an optimized Beta distribution is studied in detail. In order to analyze harmonic dispersion degree qualitatively and quantitatively, the power spectral density and the harmonic spread factor are both employed to assess the performance of the FPDR-SVPWM strategy. A series of results of simulation in MATLAB and experiments based on field programmable gate array demonstrate that the proposed modulation strategy is correct and valid, and it distributes high-order harmonics into a wide range without affecting the fundamental wave and third harmonic. The dead-time elimination pulsewidth modulation (PWM) enables the drive pulses of the upper and the lower switching devices to alternate according to the current polarity, thus abandoning the dead time and essentially avoiding the dead-time effect in power converters. However, the current zero crossing will be distorted by the current jump generated by the drive-pulse alternation, and the current zero-crossing distortion will be further intensified if errors exist in the detected current polarity. Thanks to the noise-attenuation and frequency-adaptability characteristics of the double second-order generalized integrator frequency-locked loop (DSOGI-FLL), it can obtain accurate current polarities even in harmonic and unbalanced conditions. A DSOGI-FLL-based dead-time elimination PWM is, therefore, proposed in this paper, and several improvements are made to minimize the current zero-crossing distortion. An underlap period is added when alternating the upper and lower drive pulses to smooth the current jump at zero crossing, and a delay compensation term is inserted in the DSOGI-FLL to compensate both the current measurement delay and the control delay. The effectiveness of the proposed DSOGI-FLL-based dead-time elimination PWM has been validated by experiments, respectively, in the unbalanced-current, power-change, and frequency-variation conditions with an RL load, as well as in a grid-connected converter. Most photovoltaic (PV) systems are composed of series and parallel inverters. The electromagnetic interference (EMI) mainly comes from the off–on of inverter switches with pulsewidth modulation (PWM). The output EMI peaks of PV systems would increase markedly due to the interference superposition effect caused by parallel inverters, whose carrier initial phases are in phase or close to each other. In this paper, an auto-screening carrier phase-shift scheme is proposed to weaken the superposition effect of EMI peaks and to get the result of reverse offset at its best. In a PV system, through voltage detections and spectrum estimations of each inverter with a series of phase-shift carriers, a best carrier phase of each inverter is obtained automatically to minimize EMI peaks of the PV system. In order to avoid the conflict that the screening processes of two or more inverters are underway at the same time, a specific frequency signal is output temporarily as an occupancy mark in one of the inverters. This paper has focused on the novel space vector pulse-width modulation (SVPWM) strategy for the two-level three-phase inverter, which could eliminate the harmonics nearby pulse width modulation (PWM) frequency. Ear-piercing high-frequency electromagnetic noise from motor is common due to PWM technique. The proposed SVPWM is able to remove the high-frequency harmonics located nearby the PWM frequency and other odd multiples by changing the original switching states. The unpleasant acoustic noise could be removed with the novel strategy whose PWM frequency is selected near 10 kHz. By comparison, it is near 20 kHz for conventional SVPWM to achieve the similar performance. Therefore, the switching losses are significantly reduced using the novel method. Furthermore, the proposed technique neither changes the characteristics of the fundamental wave nor employs the additional circuits in the drive. In order to prevent the power switching devices (e.g., an insulated-gate bipolar transistor, IGBT) from shoot-through in voltage-source converters during a switching period, the dead time is added either in the hardware driver circuits of the IGBTs or implemented in software in pulse width modulation (PWM) schemes. Both solutions will contribute to a degradation of the injected current quality. As a consequence, the harmonics induced by the dead time (referred to as “dead-time harmonics” hereafter) have to be compensated in order to achieve a satisfactory current quality, as required by standards. In this paper, the emission mechanism of dead-time harmonics in single-phase PWM inverters is, thus, presented considering the modulation schemes in detail. More importantly, a repetitive controller has been adopted to eliminate the dead-time effect in single-phase grid-connected PWM converters. The repetitive controller has been plugged into a proportional-resonant-based fundamental-frequency current controller so as to mitigate the dead-time harmonics and also to maintain the control of the fundamental-frequency grid current in terms of dynamics. Simulations and experiments are provided, which confirm that the repetitive controller can effectively compensate the dead-time harmonics and other low-order distortions, and also, it is a simple method without hardware modifications. Modulation schemes can significantly change the performance of a converter in the steady state. They have, thus, been extensively studied, but directed more at three-phase topologies, where triplen offsets are added. Single-phase systems, including ac–dc–ac, are less widely pursued, even though various topologies have since been proposed. The intention of this paper is, thus, to study two promising single-phase ac–dc–ac converters using reduced number of switches, and subsequently proposes modulation schemes for them. The proposed schemes help the converters to achieve better thermal spread among their switches, while keeping their dc-link voltages low. Single points of failure are thus minimized, allowing the converters to have longer lifetimes. A low-order harmonic pulsating torque is a major concern in high-power drives, high-speed drives, and motor drives operating in an overmodulation region. This paper attempts to minimize the low-order harmonic torques in induction motor drives, operated at a low pulse number (i.e., a low ratio of switching frequency to fundamental frequency), through a frequency- domain (FD) approach as well as a synchronous reference frame (SRF) based approach. This paper first investigates FD-based approximate elimination of harmonic torque as suggested by classical works. This is then extended into a procedure for minimization of low-order pulsating torque components in the FD, which is independent of machine parameters and mechanical load. Furthermore, an SRF-based optimal pulsewidth modulation (PWM) method is proposed to minimize the low-order harmonic torques, considering the motor parameters and load torque. The two optimal methods are evaluated and compared with sine-triangle (ST) PWM and selective harmonic elimination (SHE) PWM through simulations and experimental studies on a 3.7-kW induction motor drive. The SRF-based optimal PWM results in marginally better performance than the FD-based one. However, the selection of optimal switching angle for any modulation index $(M)$ takes much longer in case of SRF than in case of the FD-based approach. The FD-based optimal solutions can be used as good starting solutions and/or to reasonably restrict the search space for optimal solutions in the SRF-based approach. Both of the FD-based and SRF-based optimal PWM methods reduce the low-order pulsating torque significantly, compared to ST PWM and SHE PWM, as shown by the simulation and experimental results. Many publications have been presented on the modulation and control of the modular multilevel converter, some of which are based on phase-shifted carrier modulation. This paper presents an analysis of how the switching frequency affects the capacitor voltages, circulating currents, and alternating voltages using phase-shifted carrier modulation. It is found that switching frequencies that are integer multiples of the fundamental frequency should be avoided as they can cause the capacitor voltages to diverge. Suitable switching frequencies are derived for which the arm and line quantities will be periodic with symmetric operating conditions in the upper and lower arms. Thus, the practical outcome of this paper is a detailed description of how the switching frequency should be chosen in order to achieve advantageous operating conditions. This paper presents a new multilevel selective harmonic elimination pulse-width modulation (MSHE-PWM) technique for transformerless static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) system employing cascaded H-bridge inverter (CHI) configuration. The proposed MSHE-PWM method optimizes both the dc-voltage levels and the switching angles, enabling more harmonics to be eliminated without affecting the structure of the inverter circuit. The method provides constant switching angles and linear pattern of dc-voltage levels over the modulation index range. This in turns eliminates the tedious steps required for manipulating the offline calculated switching angles and therefore, easing the implementation of the MSHE-PWM for dynamic systems. Although the method relies on the availability of the variable dc-voltage levels which can be obtained by various topologies, however, the rapid growth and development in the field of power semiconductor devices led to produce high-efficiency dc-dc converters with a relatively high-voltage capacity and for simplicity, a buck dc-dc converter is considered in this paper. Current and voltage closed loop controllers are implemented for both the STATCOM and the buck converter to meet the reactive power demand at different loading conditions. The technique is further compared with an equivalent conventional carrier-based pulse-width modulation to illustrate its enhanced characteristics. In this paper, a real-time implementation of selective harmonic elimination pulsewidth modulation (SHEPWM) using generalized Hopfield neural network (GHNN) as applied to the single-phase inverter is designed and discussed. Finding the location of the switching instants in the case of SHEPWM involves the solution of a set of nonlinear algebraic transcendental equations. The problem is redrafted as an optimization problem, and it is solved by using GHNN. Though, in principle, the $n$ number of harmonics can be eliminated using the presented methodology, this paper tries for the case of the elimination of the 5th-, 7th-, 11th-, and 13th-order harmonics while retaining the desired fundamental. An energy function is formulated for this problem and the set of ordinary differential equations (ODEs) describing the behavior of GHNN is obtained. A program in KEIL C was developed to solve these systems of ODEs by the Runge–Kutta fourth-order method to give the switching instants for continuously varying modulation indexes $(M)$. A MATLAB simulation was carried out, and an experimental setup was also constructed in order to validate the simulated results. The fast Fourier transform analysis of the simulated output voltage waveform and the experimental output voltage waveform confirms the effectiveness of the proposed method. Three optimized pulse-width modulated (PWM) techniques for the overmodulation region of two-level inverter-fed ac drives are introduced and investigated from the harmonic loss minimization point of view. The optimization is elaborated for the lowest loss-factor, which is proportional to the square of the root mean square value of current harmonics. The loss-factors are computed for different switching numbers as the function of the motor fundamental voltage. It is shown that, with respect to the motor heating and torque ripples, the acceptable drive condition can be guaranteed by a relatively low value of an inverter switching frequency up to 96%–97% of maximal possible motor voltage. Furthermore, it is shown that the so-called three-vector methods have considerably better performance in the lower part of the overmodulation region than the so-called two-vector method for the same number of switching. Impedance network inverters are the best alternatives for voltage-source and current-source inverters. The boosting capability and the shoot-through solution of such converters make them excellent solutions for various applications. Nevertheless, hard switching forces the converter to operate in low switching frequency, which results in a bulky impedance network. Moreover, the coupling between the shoot-through duty cycle and the inverter modulation index makes a tradeoff between the voltage gain and the modulation index (output voltage harmonics). This paper presents a novel dual switching frequency modulation to mitigate the switching losses of the converter, which results in a more compact impedance network. The proposed method combines a high-frequency pulse width modulation with a low-frequency sinusoidal pulse width modulation (SPWM). Therefore, the switching losses decrease considerably with respect to the conventional simple boost modulation. In addition, the impedance network design frequency remains high, and the network size decreases obviously. The proposed approach removes the interdependence between the shoot-through duty cycle and the inverter modulation index. A comparison between the proposed method and the conventional simple boost method is performed to show its advantages over the conventional method. Interleaved converter legs are typically modulated with individual carriers per leg and phase-shifted pulse width modulation (PS-PWM) as it facilitates current balancing amongst the legs. Phase-disposition PWM (PD-PWM), despite the better harmonic performance, cannot be directly used due to the resulting current imbalance that may damage the converter. This paper addresses the current sharing issue and proposes a sorting algorithm implementation that enables single-carrier PD-PWM technique for interleaved two-level converter legs. An extension of the proposed algorithm through a switching state feedback loop, limiting the average switching frequency, is also developed. In both cases, the output current is of high quality and shared amongst the phase-legs, while the deviation between the phase-leg currents is well regulated. Simulation results demonstrate the general function of method for multiple interleaved legs as well as its current sharing capabilities for high-power applications. This paper discusses the use of a cascaded multilevel converter for flexible power conditioning in smart-grid applications. The main feature of the proposed scheme is the use of independent dc links with reduced voltages, which makes such a topology an ideal candidate for medium- and high-power applications with increased reliability. The developed control strategy regulates independent dc-link voltages in each H-bridge cell, and allows the selective and flexible compensation of disturbing currents under a variety of voltage conditions without requiring any reference frame transformation. The selective control strategies are based on the decompositions proposed in the conservative power theory, which result in several current-related terms associated with specific load characteristics. These current components are independent of each other and may be used to define different compensation strategies, which can be selective in minimizing particular effects of disturbing loads. Traditional model predictive control cost functions, when utilizing long prediction horizons ( $N\geq 10$) in power inverter applications, have demonstrated harmonic performances approaching that of schemes based on offline-generated optimal pulse patterns. However, long prediction horizons often prohibitively increase computational load. A different approach to maximizing harmonic performance is taken in this paper. It is shown that shaping the output voltage spectra using a simple feedback mechanism can significantly reduce the length of the required prediction horizon, facilitating a feasible computational load. When a short-horizon cost function is augmented by the feedback mechanism an excellent tradeoff between harmonic performance and switching loss is achieved, even with a prediction horizon of one. Conventional voltage-source inverters used for induction motor drives generate a hexagonal space vector structure. In the overmodulation range, the hexagonal space vector structure generates low-order harmonics in the phase voltage resulting in low-order torque ripple in the motor. Inverter topologies with an octadecagonal (18 sided) space vector structure eliminate fifth-, seventh-, eleventh-, and thirteenth-order harmonics from the phase voltage, and hence, the dominant sixth- and twelfth-order torque ripple generation is eliminated. Octadecagonal space vector structures proposed in the past require multiple dc sources, which makes four-quadrant operation of the drive system difficult and costly. In this paper, the formation of a multilevel nine-concentric octadecagonal space vector structure using a single dc source is proposed. In this paper, a new carrier-based pulse width modulation (PWM) strategy providing common-mode voltage (CMV) elimination and reduced current ripple in a three-level neutral-point-clamped inverter is introduced. The employed switching sequences are made up of the three zero CMV (ZCMV) vectors, and one among the three vec-tors is applied at two ends of a half-carrier cycle. The output current ripple characteristics pertaining to those switching sequences are investigated. In a carrier cycle, the root-mean-square current ripple minimization is analyzed and an optimal sequence is derived accordingly. The presented PWM scheme results in a considerably reduced current harmonic distortion in a wide modulation region as compared to the two existing ZCMV schemes on the same average switching frequency. Also, an implementation of sawtooth-carrier-based PWM patterns is proposed for further improvement of the harmonic performance. The algorithm requires small computational burden and is straightforward for an online implementation. The six-step operation of surface-mounted permanent magnet machine drives in a flux weakening region has many advantages compared to the pulse width modulation mode, such as the reduced switching loss and fully utilized inverter output voltage. However, if the ratio of the sampling frequency to the fundamental frequency is low in fixed sampling system, the low-frequency oscillation in the current can be incurred in the six-step operation. The low-frequency current causes a system stability problem and reduces system efficiency due to an excessive heat and high power loss. Therefore, this paper proposes the variable time step controller for six-step operation. By updating an output voltage, sampling phase currents, and executing the digital controller synchronized with the variable sampling time, the turn on and off switch signals for six-step operation can be generated at the exact moment. As a result, the low-frequency oscillation in the phase current can be eliminated. In addition, the system transfer function of the proposed control method is discussed for the system stability and system dynamic analysis. This paper proposes a multilevel shunt active power filter (SAPF) to deal with either harmonic current compensation or reactive power compensation. Such a device can reduce the harmonic distortion at the grid currents provided by nonlinear loads located in stiff systems. The proposed SAPF is based on three-phase bridge converters connected to cascaded single-phase transformers. The transformer arrangement permits the compensator to use a single dc-link unit, which simplifies the control strategy and the number of sensors. The multilevel waveforms are generated by using a suitable pulse-width modulation (PWM) strategy associated with the transformer turns ratio. Modularity and simple maintenance make the proposed SAPF an attractive solution compared with some conventional configurations. The model, the PWM technique, and the control strategy are presented, as well as studies considering harmonic distortion and semiconductor losses estimation. This paper presents a theoretical harmonic analysis of phase disposition (PD) and phase-shifted carrier pulse-width modulation strategies for modular multilevel converters (MMCs). It is shown that when these strategies are implemented on a per MMC arm basis, their spectral performances converge because of cancellation of odd carrier sideband groups between each phase leg's arms. An improved PD modulation strategy is then presented that uses a single PD modulator for the entire phase leg, followed by a state machine decoder that evenly distributes switching pulses to all submodules across the phase leg upper and lower arms to balance the distribution of submodule commutation events. The resulting strategy achieves optimum phase leg PD spectral performance and also achieves natural voltage balancing of the MMC submodules. This paper presents a model predictive switching pattern control (MPSPC) for a current-source converter (CSC), which achieves superb low-order harmonics elimination performance in steady state and improved transient responses. Based on a proposed space-vector-based selective harmonic elimination (SHE) method and prediction of load current at the next sampling instant, MPSPC prefers to following a precalculated SHE-pulse width modulation (PWM) pattern in steady state, and governing the CSC through a model predictive control (MPC) approach during transients. In comparison with existing schemes, the advantages of MPSPC are threefold: First, quantization error, introduced by a constant sampling frequency in MPC and degrading steady-state low-order harmonic elimination, is mitigated in the proposed scheme. Second, there is no weighting factor in the cost function, as used in existing schemes. Finally, MPSPC is totally realized based on one-step prediction, which simplifies the structure of the scheme. This paper presents the mathematical and harmonic analyses of output phase voltages of three-phase voltage source inverters which employ a hybrid two-dimensional–threedimensional (2-D–3-D) space vector modulation (SVM) voltage control algorithm. The explicit time-domain representation of the harmonic components in addition to the total harmonic distortion (THD) of the output phase voltages is given in terms of system and control parameters. This paper also investigates the harmonic characteristics and THD performance against the linearity of the modulation region which helps in the harmonic performance and design studies of such inverters employing the hybrid 2-D–3-D SVM. A new zero-sequence circulating current (ZSCC) reduction method for multimodule voltage source inverters (MVSIs) consisting of P three-phase inverters that are connected in parallel is proposed in this paper. Four-switch inverter modules are used instead of the conventional six-switch modules to reduce the cost. In this paper, the effectiveness of the proposed ZSCC reduction method is studied using selective harmonic elimination pulse width modulation. The proposed ZSCC reduction method can remove about P times the number of harmonics using the same switching frequency as compared to more conventional methods, as explained later in this paper. Distributed energy resources (DERs) are expected to provide ancillary functions including reactive power generation and harmonics compensation. Meanwhile, multilevel inverters and two-level converters with optimal pulsewidth modulation (OPWM) will be commonly used for DERs at high power levels. The challenge is to realize harmonic compensation with limited switching angles. This paper presents an online solution to realize the selective harmonics compensation (SHC), and power generation with DERs. For harmonics compensation, the selective harmonic components in the load current are detected. Then, the harmonic voltages are provided with DERs to cancel out these detected components. Since the power converter is requested to realize both harmonics filtering and power generation, limitations on harmonics compensation at the given power are discussed. The Z-source inverter (ZSI) employs an LC impedance network between the main inverter bridge and the power source. The unique feature of the ZSI is that it can operate either in buck or boost mode with a wide range of obtainable output voltages from a given input voltage. This topology also exhibits better electromagnetic-interference noise immunity when compared to a traditional voltage-source inverter (VSI). However, the LC impedance network of ZSI significantly increases the size and cost of the power converter and can make it unsuitable for low-power applications. This paper proposes a novel topology called switched boost inverter (SBI) which exhibits similar advantages of ZSI with lower number of passive components and more active components compared to ZSI. The steady-state and small-signal analyses of SBI, along with its pulsewidth modulation (PWM) control strategies, have been discussed in this paper. This paper also presents a comparison of SBI and ZSI with the same input and output parameters. The theoretical analysis given in this paper has been validated using a laboratory prototype of SBI, and the experimental results are presented for verification. The experimental harmonic spectrum of the inverter's output voltage with the proposed PWM technique is also plotted and compared with that of a traditional VSI. PWM techniques for a full-bridge dc/dc converter are investigated and a new random PWM technique is proposed in this paper. Three PWM techniques with constant switching frequency are discussed and the related random PWM techniques which spread the harmonic clusters and give constant average inductor current to reduce the output voltage ripple are discussed. The pros and cons of three constant switching frequency PWM techniques and the related random counterparts are investigated. Experimental results show that there is a significant efficiency drop of the random PWM technique due to significant increase of switching counts. Therefore, this paper presents a new random PWM technique to significantly reduce the harmonic intensity while not causing relevant impact on the efficiency. An FPGA-based digital-controlled isolated full-bridge dc/dc converter prototype is built to verify the performance of conventional and proposed PWM techniques. The specifications of the converter include the following: input voltage = 400 V, output voltage = 12 V, output power = 528 W, and switching frequency = 100 kHz. The main objective of this paper is to examine the operation of a fundamental buck-based three-phase single-stage ac–dc full-bridge converter. Multilevel inverters with hexagonal and dodecagonal voltage space vector structures have improved harmonic profile compared to two-level inverters. Further improvement in the quality of the waveform is possible using multilevel octadecagonal (18-sided polygon) voltage space vectors. This paper proposes an inverter circuit topology capable of generating multilevel octadecagonal voltage space vectors, by cascading two asymmetric three-level inverters. By the proper selection of dc-link voltages and the resultant switching states for the inverters, voltage space vectors, whose tips lie on three concentric octadecagons, are obtained. The advantages of octadecagonal voltage space vector-based pulsewidth modulation (PWM) techniques are the complete elimination of fifth, seventh, eleventh, and thirteenth harmonics in phase voltages and the extension of linear modulation range.
