The processing power in commercially available hand-held devices has improved dramatically in recent years. In parallel, techniques used in high-frame-rate medical ultrasound imaging, especially plane-wave (PW) imaging, have reduced the number of ultrasound transmissions and amount of data necessary to reconstruct an ultrasound image. In combination, the processing power and data reduction allow all of the processing steps in ultrasound image formation, from raw ultrasound channel data to final rendering, to be performed on a hand-held device. In this study, we send the raw ultrasound channel data from a research scanner wirelessly to an off-the-shelf hand-held device. The hand-held unit’s graphical processing unit is processing the raw ultrasound data into the final image, achieving real-time frame rates on the order of 60–90 frames per second (FPS) for a single-angle PW transmission. Higher quality images are achieved by trading off frame rate by coherently compounding multiple PW images, resulting in frame rates on the order of, e.g., 13 FPS when coherently compounding 7 PW transmissions. The presented setup has the potential of providing image quality which could be valuable for simple medical ultrasound diagnostic scans of, e.g., the carotid artery or thyroid. Atrial fibrillation (AF) affects three to five million Americans and is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Existing methods to diagnose this paroxysmal arrhythmia are cumbersome and/or expensive. We hypothesized that an iPhone 4S can be used to detect AF based on its ability to record a pulsatile photoplethysmogram signal from a fingertip using the built-in camera lens. To investigate the capability of the iPhone 4S for AF detection, we first used two databases, the MIT-BIH AF and normal sinus rhythm (NSR) to derive discriminatory threshold values between two rhythms. Both databases include RR time series originating from 250 Hz sampled ECG recordings. We rescaled the RR time series to 30 Hz so that the RR time series resolution is 1/30 (s) which is equivalent to the resolution from an iPhone 4S. We investigated three statistical methods consisting of the root mean square of successive differences (RMSSD), the Shannon entropy (ShE) and the sample entropy (SampE), which have been proved to be useful tools for AF assessment. Using 64-beat segments from the MIT-BIH databases, we found the beat-to-beat accuracy value of 0.9405, 0.9300, and 0.9614 for RMSSD, ShE, and SampE, respectively. Using an iPhone 4S, we collected 2-min pulsatile time series from 25 prospectively recruited subjects with AF pre- and postelectrical cardioversion. Using derived threshold values of RMSSD, ShE and SampE from the MIT-BIH databases, we found the beat-to-beat accuracy of 0.9844, 0.8494, and 0.9522, respectively. It should be recognized that for clinical applications, the most relevant objective is to detect the presence of AF in the data. Increasingly, we use mobile applications and services in our daily life activities, to support our needs for information, communication or leisure. However, user acceptance of a mobile application depends on at least two conditions: the application's perceived experience, and the appropriateness of the application to the user?s context and needs. However, we have a weak understanding of a mobile user's quality of experience (QoE) and the factors influencing it. This article presents a 4-week-long 29-Androidphone- user study, where we collected both QoE and the underlying network's quality of service measurements through a combination of user, application, and network data on the user?s phones. We aimed to derive and improve the understanding of users' QoE for a set of widely used mobile applications in users' natural environments and different daily contexts. This work presents the implementation of synchronized multimedia streaming for the Apple iPhone platform. The idea is to stream multimedia content from a single source to multiple receivers with direct or multihop connections to the source. First we look into existing solutions for video streaming on the iPhone that use point-to-point architectures. After acknowledging their limitations, we propose a solution based on network coding to efficiently and reliably deliver the multimedia content to many devices in a synchronized manner. Then we introduce an application that implements this technique on the iPhone. We also present our testbed, which consists of 16 iPod Touch devices to showcase the capabilities of our application.
